Character Analysis: "The Delinquent One"

Imagine you're a scientist helping to create a new lifeform on a petri dish with your coworkers. You're not the leader - one came up with the formula and another followed it. Still, you help since these are the ones on equal standing as you.

Goal was to make them in your coworkers' image and indeed the little things took on a life slightly similar to your group. However, they're still fragile in all definitions, so your group gives them ways to become more powerful should they seek it.

And after a miniscule taste of that power, they start wanting to overthrow you all.

They don't even have a full view of the petri dish.

Your coworkers pull away from the project as a result. Surprisingly, though, they don't punish the lifeforms much. As if letting them go out of pity or curiosity.

Seeing that nobody is putting the lifeforms in their place, you step in.

You go, "We literally created you. You won't get what we have because you're objectively weak and you don't even deserve what we have if you're this ungrateful."

And then the lifeforms call you a delinquent.

I think Ascended Gods could be Rher's victory and here's a long-winded answer for why:

I think humans are to Old Gods as micro-organisms are to humans. Mankind will never be on the level of Old Gods if we're this insignificantly small. Like tiny specks of bacteria.

Ancient Gods are concepts. They may have some physical forms when they appear to the player but it's likely always an approximation. Beings like the Old Gods don't have a solid unchanging form like ours. F&H's humans are bacteria on a petri dish and the Old Gods were peering down a microscope - mankind can't simply look up and see the Old Gods breathing down their necks. They're too small and too far away.

The Old Gods have long since left the laboratory anyhow.

We don't have info on how these reptile beings were created and by which Old God, only that they were there before humans. However, there are hints of these reptiles having ascended into the Greater Blights. These are what they turn into when they become New Gods.

Nothing states of the Old Gods being against the Greater Blights, which means these reptiles seemingly haven't rebelled in the way that humans had. Which means the Old Gods had been open to the idea of mortals becoming New Gods, before humans started abandoning their creators.

I'll rattle off some well-known bits about the Old Gods to point something out, bear with me.

Sylvian has a deep love of humanity. If she had a say in the human New Gods' formation, she may have done it out of pity for her beloved ones.

Gro-goroth has his extensive curiosity. If he had a say in the human New Gods' formation, he may have done it for curiosity's sake.

Rher possibly took part in the New Gods' formation. We have no evidence that he took an anti-human stance before they become New Gods.

Vinushka, Vitruvia, and the unnamed Old Gods / their servants - we don't know enough of to speculate. But given that only Rher is noted to actively gatekeep humanity's godhood, it can imply that nobody other than Rher cared enough to be against it.

It's easier to fall under an anthropocentric lens. If one Old God's love for humanity leads to losing your mind and being enslaved to base desires, it's understandable to be wary of what an Old God's hate for humanity would do.

Regardless of Rher's opinion of humanity, though, it'd be black-&-white to render him a simple villain.

From Rher's perspective, it could be something like humans having too much of an ego to know when they're making bad choices.

Being a New God was a trap, a false solution for incomprehensibly large problems. 'Making a fuss over temporary solutions to the point of throwing away devotion to the ones who created you,' is understandably frustrating to witness.

Rher's supposedly the God of hidden truths. Moonscorching is to forcibly pry what's buried in the subconscious, the person reaching the limits of their sanity and losing themself to inner horrors. Despite that, his moonlight is considered his "gift" to humanity.

He's also been the last known Old God to observe mankind. If he's doing the equivalent of hatewatching, then he's not really doing a good job at it... letting both The Girl and Reila ascend like that.

That's why I don't think he's necessarily rooting for humanity's failure. I think that Rher may want mankind to face the truth of their limitations - if people can't face the dark truths within themselves, they'd never face the dark truths within the rest of the petri dish. They shouldn't even try.

And there's been an obvious history of humans continuously failing. Most knew the perils that seeking godhood entails and how weak New Gods are compared to Old Gods. This truth, to him, is frustratingly in plain sight.

Yet mankind still chooses to seek higher means of power.

But the Ascended Gods? Humanity can become as powerful as Old Gods in convoluted situations like Alll-mer, the God of Fear and Hunger, and Logic.

It's not the same situation as the New Gods. There may have been arrogance and ego in wanting to have human Old Gods, but it's not simply that. Plans have been detailed in order for these mortals to ascend. Being Ascended takes having to throw parts of your individuality away in order to achieve humanity's goals, the opposite of holding onto the ego.

And the Ascended Gods have driven the species to greater heights the way New Gods couldn't.

It's like humans have identified a limitation, have devised a plan to patch that limitation, and it finally worked.

I think that's why Rher tells Pocketcat to stop going after The Girl. That's why Rher lets a Termina contestant power-on Logic. For once, humanity has done what he's wanted them to do: be humbled.

God of Fear and Hunger gave humans a greater sense of limitations pertaining to fears and hunger, and this led to humans focusing on creating manmade technologies to overcome it.

Logic will give humans a greater sense of limitations pertaining to technology. By this, Rher can assume it will also lead to humans focusing on how to overcome this limitation.

F&H1 and F&H2 come off to some as if his schemes have been foiled. 'Another human ascended despite The Delinquent One's best efforts'.

Sure, he may still hate what humanity had done to the Old Gods. He may still hate the idea of New Gods. It's unlikely that he'd ever be compassionate toward humans, he's definitely no misunderstood ally of humanity.

But do I think Rher won alongside the player in the end.

Y'know, I personally think that Bloodmoon's uncanny mouth actually fits them. This is Bloodmoon after all, and Ruin was the one who designed their new look- it makes sense that Ruin would go for some freaky features, and BM would probably enjoy the extra terror it inflicts on their victims. BM's mouth being able to open wider than is natural might also make it easier to tear apart and eat people, like a snake. All in all pretty on-brand for both of them imo

Do you know comics where moon knight team up with strange? Or deadpool?

Or where he interact with magic marvel characters?

Oh, for sure! Moon Knight has teamed up with Doctor Strange a couple times, as well as with Doctor Voodoo and Clea. There's also the Damnation event which involved a whole slew of magic users and magic-adjacent characters, including Doctor Strange, Doctor Voodoo, and Wong. The event itself, however, is,,,,unfortunately (fair warning, the following is largely just my opinion) not the greatest in its portrayal of MK. It tends to use Mr. Knight as the comedic relief and the "comedy" boils down to "ohohoheehee I'm so unstable and can someone please recommend me a psychiatrist," which can be...abrasive if you're feeling charitable and I've seen others who were feeling decidedly less charitable describe it as a little offensive. Which is a shame, because at least in my eyes, the event has a great line up and could have been even better. I'll throw in the citations though for anyone who wants to check it out and form their own opinions.

MK's relationship with Deadpool is uuuuh unfortunately a bit more rocky. Moon Knight's goals rarely line up with Deadpool's in the 616 Universe, so MK doesn't "team up" with Wade so much as, as I said in this post (and I quote myself not to self-aggrandize, but because, well, I'm not particularly creative in my metaphors), use Wade like one of "those stress-relief squeeze toys." Moon Knight was greatly intrigued when he discovered Wade can't die and consequently uses that to his advantage. Outside of the 616 continuity, Mr. Knight is much more sympathetic to Wade in Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe Again, but gosh, I never feel great recommending that series without some degree of forewarning. While I genuinely enjoyed some moments, as you can probably guess from the title,,,,it has such a terribly sad ending that still kind of haunts me tbh. But I'll include that just in case you're curious! All of the associated citations are beneath the cut as this was starting to get a bit long (whoops mea culpa)

excuse me, i'm like pacing my mind palace. thinking about the tw au of course but also just canon.

i'm a firm believer in little spoon reyna. i think she wants to feel protected, small and safe as someone shields her away from the rest of the world.

i think back in her haunted home, she slept by herself or at least hylla tried to make her sleep on her own because she really was too old to be sleeping in the same bed, grow up, reyna. but reyna would creep out of her room, heart racing in the middle of the night, absolutely terrified of being caught in the hallway. and she'd rush into hylla's room because the terror would finally win over and she'd crawl into hylla's bed with her.

hylla would protest, she'd call reyna a baby but she'd hold reyna back just as tightly. hylla wasn't able to sleep at night.

for all of hylla's scolding, she never locked her bedroom door. even when she was just as scared of their dad. she didn't lock her bedroom door like she'd lock up other parts of the house it was dangerous for reyna to be in by herself. she didn't lock her bedroom door because reyna wasn't ever truly not allowed inside.

and then reyna slept communally at c.c.'s spa/resort. she had her own sleeping space in another room anyone could walk into but it didn't feel safe like curling up in her big sister's arms.

the cots weren't big enough to share, so she'd just sit at the foot of her sister's cot and listen to her breathe in the dark. she knows that she's the reason they're here and she hates it but she refuses to regret what she did.

and then when they're kidnapped by pirates, she and hylla share a sleeping space again. hylla doesn't sleep, her eyes go dark, go mean whenever any of the men look at them. she lays there with a knife in her hand and reyna sleeps with her head pillowed against that arm.

she feels safe when her sister is within touching distance, even if her waking hours are filled with dread and anxiety and simmering rage, she feels safe. when hylla pulls her down to sleep for the night, reyna goes easily, goes willingly. and she sleeps but her sister does not.

she sleeps with lupa's pack and she doesn't feel safe, not quite. but she does know she prefers the company of beasts to that of men.

and then at camp jupiter it's bad again. she doesn't sleep save for small bursts of about fifteen minutes before she jolts from her bunk. reyna sleeps with a knife in her hand under her pillow.

she isn't friends with any of the kids in her cohort and the one friend she does have is in the fifth cohort. the unlucky cohort. the cursed cohort. but reyna lived in a haunted house before all of this and she'd give anything to be in the same space as jason.

the bunks aren't big enough for sharing, to discourage this very thing. she'd only sit at the foot of his bed and listen to him breathe. she'd only listen to him breathe.

she and jason eventually go on a quest together, because jason asks her to join him (in my head paralleling the annabeth quest mates in som). she does.

it's just the two of them, reconnaissance but trouble always follows jason the same as reyna follows him.

jason spreads out his sleeping bag and pats the space next to him and she hesitates. he's a boy, boys are scary because they become men. men who are worse than any snarling beast. but he's just a boy with earnest blue eyes telling her they'll conserve body heat if they use her sleeping bag as a blanket a curl up.

so reyna lays down beside him. on her side with her knife clenched in her hand she doesn't feel safe. she can't settle and she knows she's keeping him awake because his breathing is too quiet for the resting.

jason eventually whispers to her in the dark and tells her that it's okay. it'll all be okay and she wants to believe her best friend.

he slowly wraps an arm around her and she's tense. she knows she shouldn't but she lifts her head to allow his other arm to slip under it.

she loosens her grip on her knife. it's poised between them. if she isn't careful she could gut him and she doesn't want that.

jason tells her about hie earliest memories of lupa's pack and his days at the legion.

didn't anyone ever hold you as a child? she asks by the end of his story.

no, i must've been an unloved baby.

and she thinks to herself, but you're holding me. you're comforting me. what taught you to do this?

is there a love instinct? reyna hadn't ever asked hylla.

reyna fully lets go of her blade and wraps her arms around him too. for the first time since hylla and her split ways, reyna feels safe. armed only with trust and affection.

wonwoo was having a stroke. 

months ago, when you first started going out, he of course had to mention his love for gaming and computers, no matter how lame it made him - he figured if it bothered you then you simply weren’t fit for him. but, thankfully, you didn’t find it unappealing whatsoever, you even asked him questions about games and whatnot, sounding genuinely interested. 

and he wouldn’t lie - it’d be cool if you were a gamer as well, but… 

“no, it’s not for me,” you said when he asked if you played. “i don’t really get the hype, and to be honest i just suck really bad.” 

…but wonwoo understood that you didn’t have to share his every passion, besides - you had your hobbies, he had his, and that was perfectly fine. he was more than happy to indulge in activities that you enjoyed and getting to know you even better through them. 

during the course of your relationship you still didn’t show any interest in his games. well, maybe except for when you wanted cuddles, then you suddenly took a great interest in what was happening on his computer, but wonwoo didn’t mind. it was cute how you tried to keep up with the game though you had no idea what it was about, especially when you were sleepy.  

sometimes, though, you felt bad that you didn’t share his passion, that you didn’t know about all of the new updates, and gaming terms, or what the different keys on the keyboard were responsible for, but wonwoo was always quick to shut down those silly thoughts of yours. “i don’t mind, honey,” he always said and kissed your cheek. “i really don’t”. 

so it was safe to say that he had never expected to hear, "i'm a gamer now, baby. i play games," with a proud smile on your lips. 

wonwoo’s day had been long and hard, his muscles were aching from the hours spent on dancing and moving around the stage, and his head was begging for a moment of silence from all the yelling and yapping of his members. 

but that, that just woke him up like no amount of coffees or red bulls could. 

“huh?” he managed to say in utter confusion. 

he didn’t like how you were smiling. there was something sinister about it. 

“there’s this game everyone is playing now. i saw some videos on tik tok,” you had to stifle a giggle seeing your boyfriend’s expression upon the mention of the app he considered cursed, “and it looked fun. so… i’ve been playing it ever since you left for work.” 

well, maybe you did find it on tik tok, but a game was still a game, so wonwoo figured he should count that as a win. 

“let me show you,” you declared and took his hand with an excited grin, before he could say anything else, let alone ask you what kind of game you were talking about. 

you quickly pulled him into his bedroom, totally dismissing mingyu’s “hello”, and made him sit on his gaming chair. 

“i know you don’t like it when people touch your computer-,”.

“you can use it, honey, i don’t mind,” he cut you off and wrapped his arm around your waist, pulling you closer to him. as ecstatic as wonwoo was about your breakthrough in gaming, he could wait to go to bed and finally get his well deserved cuddles from you. 

“okay okay,” you said and unintendedly ran your fingers through his hair. “so here it is,” you pointed at the screen behind him. 

wonwoo had no idea what game could have finally caught your attention. even the adorable characters from animal crossing weren’t cute enough for you to spend more than five minutes on the game, but what he saw on his computer...

"what, uh," he gulped. "what is that?"

“dress to impress!” 

well, it certainly did not impress wonwoo. 

“it’s like a dressing up game,” you added, when your boyfriend didn’t say anything. “here.” 

you rolled him a bit away from the desk so you could take your designated place on his lap, and disconnected the headphones from the computer, which made everything so much worse. the music that was playing in the background had to be one of the worst sounds he had ever heard. 

“look,” you pointed at the timer at the top of the screen. “the game is starting.” 

he could feel how you were buzzing with excitement, clapping your hands in tiny, waiting for the time to run out. 

“okay, see? here’s the theme,” wonwoo nodded sceptically, but nonetheless tightened his grip on your waist.

then the screen changed to what looked like a large walk-in closet the size of his and mingyu's apartment. a bunch of other characters were running around, and the god awful music was still playing, and you started to run around as well, and, “oh my god, what was going on?”. 

“who should i dress up as?” you bit your nail, clearly very focused. wonwoo took a peek at your furrowed brows, and small pout and for a second he drowned out the annoying sound coming from his computer, just to focus on your adorable expression.  

“i can do you!” you said, and turned around to quickly place a kiss on his cheek. “from the “face the sun” concept photos. technically it’s not an album cover, but… no one here is ever on theme anyway”.  

wonwoo could only watch as you slowly changed your outfit into something that was supposed to resemble one of his concept photos, only in a more cutified version, because as you said, "you're a babygirl". with the minutes ticking by, he couldn’t help but smile at you being so focused on putting the whole outfit together. 

"okay, it's done," you said, leaning back so you were resting against wonwoo's chest. "now it's show time."

one by one, the characters walked the carpet, presenting their… whatever their outfits were. 

“ugh, this fit sucks ass,” you groaned, and nuzzled your head into his shoulder. “wait til one of them hits the twenty eight pose,” you said, and by the tone of your voice wonwoo did not want to see that. 

“why are you giving everyone one star?” he asked, confused. “that one wasn’t that bad,” he pointed at the character that dressed up as ariana’s dangerous woman. 

“you never give anyone more than one star,” you stated as a matter of fact. “oh, look,” you squealed. “it’s me.” 

indeed it was you, and for what it was worth - your outfit looked the best in wonwoo’s opinion. but then again you were best in everything to him, so his opinion didn’t count. and then the screen turned black again. 

the winners are… 

“now we’ll see who placed on the podium,” you explained, and grabbed his hand that was still resting on your waist. 

wonwoo nodded and put his chin on your shoulder. “i’m sure you’re going to be first, honey.” 

“huh,” you huffed. “i wouldn’t be so sure about that.” 

and yeah, you were right. in the first place there was a character that wasn’t dressed up at all, in the second someone with the vip sign dressed as if they were going to the circus, and in the third there was a very creepy character of a man.

you clicked your tongue annoyed. “told you.” 

well, that was an experience wonwoo had never thought he’d have the, uh, pleasure to go through. 

“so,” you got up, and just when wonwoo was about to whine about the lack of your warmth, you straddled his lap. “what do you think?” you cupped his cheeks and smiled at him brightly. 

he wasn’t sure he was thinking at all, at this point. 

the annoying music? unbearable. the clearly not on theme outfits? hideous. the weird poses that freaked him out? he was sure he’d get nightmares from them. 

wonwoo must’ve been thinking too long about his answer so as not to hurt your feelings, because the smile slowly started to disappear from your face. "you think it's weird, right?" you asked and looked down.

"what? no, it's not that, it's-,".

"sweetie, i understand," you laughed quietly. "it's a game for kids, and a little cheesy at that but-,".

"no no," wonwoo quickly said and grabbed your face in his hands so he could lift your head. "i just didn't expect this. you always said you didn't like to game and i didn't know what to expect."

"yeah, but still-,".

"oh could you be quiet for a second?" he smiled when he saw the corners of your lips lift up. "i didn't mean to make you feel bad and i'm sorry if it did.” 

yeah, the game might not have been his style, and he would never have played it himself, but you liked it. and that was all he cared about. he had never seen you smile like that when he was gaming - your eyes were practically heart shaped when you were dressing up your character, and if this wasn't the most adorable thing ever he didn't know what it was. 

if it made you happy, then it made him happy too.

"you have no idea how glad you found a game you like," he ran his thumbs over your cheeks. "and you know what? if i played myself i'd definitely give your outfit five stars."

you giggled, and wrapped your hand around one of his wrists. "thank you, wonwoo."

"of course," he muttered and pecked your forhead. "now tell me, is there a way we could play it at the same time?"

"wonwoo, you don't have to-,"

"but i want to," he said.

for a moment you just looked at him with a raised brow, as if you were trying to figure out if he was really telling the truth. and he really was. wonwoo would survive any horrible outfit and that annoying music just to see you so excited and happy again.

"are you sure?"

he quickly nodded.

"okay, then let me get my computer."
