I have several pet peeves about pop discourse on greek myths, and the ones I find most 'most resist urge to scream in the tags' are:
Taking Ovid's 1000 year later alteration to Medusa's origin in order to make her a symbol of assault and loss of automomy whilst Danae and Andromeda's own cases of assault and loss of autonomy and Perseus' role in protecting them is swept under the rug for... reasons. Side note: Why do people dislike Perseus. He's genuinely just some guy. He's fine. His main motivation is to protect the helpless I mean come on.
Making the Hymn to Demeter about how Hades and Persephone's relationship was functional and healthy 'actually' and making it entirely about Persephone's independence (through the overbearing mother and sex=freedom tropes) and ignoring the woman who the story is actually about in the process.
Taking Calypso's rant about the double standard of male gods taking lovers and female goddesses should be able to do the same and that Odysseus doesn't deserve Penelope as a result where in reality Homer describes the man sitting crying on the beach every day for years wanting to go home to his wife but he is literally being held against his will be a goddess and the word 'forced' is used as in she is assaulting him ergo her rant ends up being less about the double standards of female sexuality and more "equality is being able to punch a woman after she slaps me" except its about raping mortals who have no consent to give.
Oddly, I think it's partially people having no idea what to make of mothers. They're in the way of the young women and their stories of sexual maturity. It is a similar thing to the Odysseus story. Young women and the sexuality at the expense of older men and women and the denial of their autonomy in return. It's all very radfem in tone in ways I can't quite verbalise.
#listen maybe just read some homer and hesoid for once instead of ovid and you'll understand#i have had enough of Ovid!!!!#like love the guy love the stories do not love the prevelance of his roman myths superseding greek myths when talking about greek myths#does that make sense...#i know i know you cant gatekeep 3000 year old stories which are so much in flux but good lord the same theme keeps cropping up#in these shit feminist retellings which are just so lazy#i don't blame you madeline miller or margaret atwood cause you both know what you're doing#some of these recent others meanwhile...#note: this is half ten pm musings in bed and should not be taken as coherent or comprehensive or academical#tagamemnon

The wizard saved the pirate in the five boxes?
HM.... i wouldnt say saved them exactly but i would argue that the wizard had a hand in guiding both boochbeard and gandry to where the pirate was being held... :>
i do like the implications of that, too, though – we didn't know them, and yet we made an enourmous impact on their life. by saving two silly pirates in our quest, we initiated someone else's call to action.
AND WHILE IT MAY NOT BE COMPLETELY LIKE THAT... the point of that post in particular was to appreciate how intertwined the fates of the wizard and the pirate are. idk i think thats kinda neat!
SO MAINLY its just my wording 😭 you can take it however you want
#val.answer#wiz ramblings#DOES THAT MAKE SENSE...#its like. WE were the beat of the butterflys wings and that ended up with the pirate toppling the armada#for a while the timelines seemed to line up... and then they didnt when polaris and etc came out#but while they were we were generally in the same place at the same time... i think thats also something i liked#both mcs in one place carrying out their duties... same place in a different world....#i actually wrote about this too

i hate being asked my pronouns in public areas so much lol. leave me alone. yeah in that case id rather people just guessed.
#i know it does make it easier for trans people who are out to self identify themselves but tbh thats a status thats not for the faint of#heart anyway#like if you wanna be out you do kinda have to impose and emphasize your gender#does that make sense...#im just thinking about like teachers asking for students pronouns and stuff#i see trans people putting their pronouns in their name but i dont think you really need to do that with every single student if they are#obviously serving cis#but i GUESS it forces them to confront their gender and stuff#and im being whiny cos im caught in the middle and just want to exist in 'who give a shit' world

i’m not saying i don’t Care about kpop performers as people, because i do, but also i Don’t. i don’t want to know their legal names or what they looked like as children or their ‘deepest 50 questions’ answers or any of that shit bc i think some things should get to stay private for them. they should have some part of their life that isn’t immediately made available for the public to consume. that’s what i care about

best depiction of the batfam will always be "You grew up to be the person who would have saved you" but it applies to them each respectively and that's why none of them can see eye to eye and also get up their own asses about things and go to such great lengths to defend their personal brand of justice. Because they can never stop trying to save themselves from their own history.

I think that one thing people fail to understand is that unsolicited literary criticism coming from an online stranger who is reading with no knowledge of what the authors intended goal is, is not going to be received the same as say: the authors beta reader or friends who know what the authors intended goal and has the sufficient knowledge and input to help the author reach that desired outcome.
"But I'm only trying to be helpful" How do I know you have the knowledge and literary skill for you to be able to actaully do that when we don't know each other and you are essentially a stranger to me? Are you applying this criticism based out of personal biased experience and desire to see the story or characterization be driven in another direction or tweaked, or do you know the author's intentions for the character? If the story is incomplete, are you basing your criticism of a character on the incomplete narration with only partial information available of them or are you building up a report until the story's completion? Did the author provide you with the information needed to make a fully informed criticism?
Have you discussed with the author what their plans are or are you assuming them based off the narration, especially if the narration is proven or implied to be unreliable or missing key points of the plot? Are you unbiased enough to help them reach their desired outcome for the characters and story regardless of your personal feelings towards the characters/antagonists and setting? Can you handle being told your specific input isn't wanted because you're a reader and/or have no written anything relating to their genre or topic? Do you understand and respect that the author's personal experiences might influence their writing and make it different than how you would have done it personally? Do you understand if an author only wants input from a specific demographic relating to their story?
If it's for fanfiction or other hobby media, are you holding a free hobby to a professional standard? Are you trying to give criticism because you feel like the author has produced 'subpar job performance' of their fic? Are you viewing their work as a personal intimate outlet or something that must conform with mass media? Are you applying rules and guidelines when the fic is shared for simple sharing sake? Is your criticism worded appropriately and focused on the parts where the author has requested input on rather than a general dismissal and or disapproval?
Have you put yourself in a place where you assumed you have the input needed for the story to evolve better, or have you asked what the author needs and what they're having trouble with? Can you handle having your criticism rejected if the author decides their story doesn't need the change and not take it as a personal offense against your character? Are you crossing that boundary because you think you are doing the author a favor? Are you trying to be helpful, or do you just want to be?
I think sometimes when people hear authors go 'please don't give me unsolicited writing advice or criticism' they automatically chalk it up to 'this author doesn't want ANY constructive feedback on their stuff at all' and not "i already have trusted individuals who will help me with my writing goals and- hey i don't know you like that, please stop acting so overly familiar with me'
#small rant brought to you by: listened to my younger sibling's friend be very upset today because an original story she wrote gets bashed#the story itself is fine maybe a little fast paced but overall she was happy with it's progress#and there is this one dude who keeps trying to tell her that her story needs to go another direction to 'make sense' and it changes the end#after she's repeatedly explained she's happy with the outcome and does not want to expand on that plot point any further#dude says she's 'unreceptive to criticism' no dude you're just being a dick#constructive criticism helps the AUTHOR reach THEIR intended goal#not steer the story in the direction a reader wants to see it go#sara shush#pls don't reblog with any 'but i take unsolicited criticism all the time' this isnt about you. your boundary is not other people's boundary

lived my whole life in guilt bc i thought i was responsible for people's feelings. newly realizing that other people are responsible for their feelings and reactions, even if they make it seem like i'm the problem. a lot of the time it really has to do w them and their own emotional regulation. i can't keep thinking i'm not allowed to have space bc of other people's insecurities. like i literally refuse to dim myself. other people are responsible for their feelings just as i'm responsible for mine.
#like i'm always gonna operate from a place of kindness but i've had to deal w so many people who're bad at communication/confrontation#which led me to think i'm the problem#that i deserve to be given the silent treatment or dismissed disregarded belittled etc#that's j not true. i'm far from perfect but i think so few people deserve that kind of reaction. and my biggest revelation is i do not#even if people want to make me think i do / that their reaction is justified / that i'm a burden etc#my biggest problem is i humor people like this for too long bc it's been normalized behavior to me#does this make any sense to anyone. it's the end of the year and i'm reflecting on so many things#p

i guess my main problem with those "do you actually like xyz or do you just want abc" posts is not that they're boring attempts at psychoanalysis, though they are. my main problem is the "or". they're not asking if you like xyz because of abc. they're presenting it as if having a reason to desire something somehow negates the desire itself. as if you actually want abc and your desire for xyz is just a misguided attempt to get it. "you don't actually want to engage in hard kink, you just want someone to love you. you're completely normal and once your desire to be loved is fulfilled you'll stop wanting this hard kink thing. i have to imagine it this way because if i accept that sometimes people just want this taboo thing for no discernible reason or a different reason than the milquetoast one i projected onto them, i'll have to reevaluate how i think about desire and sexuality" maybe i'm being dramatic but that is the underlying tone of a lot of them to me
