Okay so. The New Beetlejuice Movie.
I have thoughts about Lydia and Beetz, and how Beetlejuice's feelings developed for her.
Yes. I ship them. I don't think I've come out and said it yet, but yeah I'm one of those. Block me if it bothers you. Winona and Micheal ship it, too. For the record.
Analysis under the cut
Okay folks. So, I don't believe for a second that Beetlejuice loved her in the first movie. He doesn't know her, barely interacts with her, doesn't care about her outside of having a means to an end. You can see this in how he treats the wedding, too. He rushes it and does everything in his power to stop everyone from saying his name. I don't even think they had a cake?
Now, this isn't to say he isn't intrigued by Lydia.
"I think I could get along with Edgar Allen Poe's daughter, she gets me."
Let's be real, though. He's a scumbag and a sex pest in the first movie.
This is in stark contrast to the sequel. He calls Lydia the love of his life, keeps a photo of her on his desk, fulfills all his promises to her, helps her get revenge on Rory *after* making him tell the truth about his motivations, and the DANCE SEQUENCE?? If his goal was just to escape the Netherworld, he'd have rushed the wedding vows and gotten it over with as quick as possible. And considering he has *more* motivation to get out than the first movie-- Delores coming to kill him, for real, permenantly-- that makes the second wedding even more romantic. He is down BAD bad.
So, how did we get here?
That's what I've been puzzling over for past couple days. I think it has something to do with the psychic connection Beetlejuice mentions to Bob.
@herefortheships has an excellent post that helped fill in the "why" of the psychic connection. Lydia can see all kinds of ghosts. What makes Beetlejuice different?
It's because they almost completed the wedding in the first movie. Sure, Lydia never said "I do", but they were almost there, and with this marriage ceremony being so powerful as to bring the dead back to life, even an interrupted wedding forms a link between them. Beetlejuice being such a powerhouse himself, and Lydia being naturally psychic, probably strengthens it. The closest comparsion I'd make is never closing out with a Ouija board. A very powerful, horny Ouija board.
So, this gives Beetlejuice a chance to get to know Lydia over the years. He watches her grow up, with a set of ghost parents no less. He sees her powers strengthen, and how she goes on to start a show utilizing her gift. I wonder if the show inspired Beetlejuice to start his own business?
She becomes a wife, a mother, a fully rounded adult who never loses her adoration of the macabre. I think he sees what he originally saw in Delores, and it ignites something, for lack of a better term, long-dead within him. Lydia is a much better person than Delores, too, and Beetlejuice knows that. After all, she originally agreed to marry him to save her (already dead) friends.
No wonder he's fucking smack dizzy in love. He softens, becomes a marginally more respectable person. Keeping a picture of teenage Lydia on his desk is objectively creepy, but that's also when he saw her in person last, so it makes sense.
Something else I noticed, and this kind of a tangent, but it's interesting.
He only started appearing to her again recently. Like, she'd felt him around the corners, but it's only around the start of the film that he tries to actively get her attention. I have a theory as to why. In part, he wanted to make himself better for her before making a grand entrance (reputable businessman and all), but there's something else that's more obvious.
Rory. He knows Rory's bad news, and I wouldn't be surprised if he used his connection with Lydia to spy on him. Beetlejuice probably knew he was planning to marry Lydia for her money soon. Now, he couldn't talk to her properly due to her blatantly trying to push him out, but he could still be loudly present.
Notice how when Rory summons him, Beetlejuice presents as a relationship counselor. He even says "I think there's an enabler here, but we'll talk about that later," which I think is because he wants Rory to know he sees through the emotionally manipulative bullshit.
I think he also knows Lydia was not going to believe him if he said Rory was a creep. I mean, why would she? Beetlejuice bides his time with gross out gags and other typical Beetlejuice antics. It's only after he's proven himself honest enough to stay true to his word by saving Astrid and sending her boyfriend to hell that he gives Rory the truth syrum.
He's really, really grown to genuinely love Lydia, way more than he ever loved Delores I'd say, and it's because he's fallen in love with the woman he got to watch her become.

I used to be part of the TOH fandom but left after the finale - I felt it was very lacking and was a huge letdown for all the reasons you said. Patting itself on the back and lore erasure. But I'd like to ask about something different.
It's no secret Dana hates Disney. But saying it everywhere, the jabs at Disney in the actual show, the attitude of fans parroting her, especially when the news of the shortening was first out - it was legitimately intense. Disney the company has done bad things. But there was a period where I felt like a bad person for even remotely enjoying Disney movies and Disney-published books. I hated myself and felt I was 'betraying' the show, because I had been told Disney was the enemy and nothing more. Disney shortening the show was not a good decision. But it also provided fans with a convenient scapegoat to put every bit of blame on when the show had the tiniest flaw. Comics of beating up Mickey Mouse, 'Disney' being treated like a swear word, praising TOH as the holy grail of animation and saying Disney hated gay people - it made me feel I was a traitor to the show and to myself. (I'm still figuring out my sexuality, but I know I'm not straight.)
Do you think the Disney blame game was too much?
The toh fandom has this incredibly binary way of thinking; the show is the greatest thing in animation and if you don't agree then you're a bigot. Lumity is the best sapphic ship ever and if you don't think so then you're lesbophobic. Shipping non canon ships is tantamount to a war crime. And of course, any criticism of the show has the convenient Disney defense. Any and all flaws of the show is because Disney is evil for not letting the show reach its full potential.
Listen, getting your show cancelled or shortened sucks. But, unfortunately, it's not unique and writers need to prepare for that because it seems to be an occupational hazard in the entertainment industry. A lot of shows get cancelled without even having a conclusion (thank you Netflix for ending the Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance on a cliffhanger! even after the show won a got dang Emmy! 😤) so people should be thankful that at least the toh crew were allowed to finish the story.
I can give grace when analyzing a show's elements knowing what the writers had to deal with. But if they make decisions knowing ahead of time that they only have half a season and 3 specials left, and proceed to add more characters and plot lines that would require a longer season, then those are all fair game.
Dana knew of the Shortening around the production of Eda's Requiem, yet decided to add the Collector, because screw it! We like this little guy and want to see where it goes! They had Hunter get possessed and kill his best friend, yet barely any time is given to him to process that trauma. In the penultimate episode, Boscha, of all people, gets a mini sub plot despite not being relevant for a full season. Luz's angst arc gets 4. separate. resolutions.
None of this is Disney's fault. This all on the crew for not using their precious time wisely and tossing whatever they can to the wall to see what sticks.
So yeah, the Disney blame game is too much but it's also a blessing in disguise because now it's a convenient shield for whoever doesn't want to hear criticism about the show.
As for feeling guilty about liking Disney; listen, Disney has been foundational for literally millions of people for decades. Its presence and influence is seemingly inescapable. And the company has done some awful things in the name of corporate greed and profit.
But you should never feel guilty for liking something that brings you joy.
Remember that writers and artists are responsible for the shows you love. Many queer folks have seen themselves in Disney movies for a variety of reasons and there are many queer artists that have worked for Disney (hi Howard Ashman and Andreas Deja!)
So no, you're not a traitor for liking Disney.
The toh fandom has a very reactionary, us-vs-them attitude and it's incredibly toxic. So don't let the haters get you down!

Considering how Lumity heavy this Chibiverse episode is, it amuses me that Hunter is the first TOH character to make an appearance.

Hey archival assistants, avatars, and everyone in between!
Welcome to the official Tumblr for ArchiveCon 2024. We are proud to be hosting our THIRD (!!) ArchiveCon - a fan-lead, fan-run online mini convention for 18+ fans of the Rusty Quill horror podcast, The Magnus Archives (and now Protocol!)
Whether you are an old fan, a new fan, a deeply-rooted fandom denizen, or looking to make your first connections in our fan community, we hope you’ll join us. ArchiveCon may be online-only, but we’ve got all the energy and features of a traditional offline convention - everything from panels and special guests (voice actors, writers, and industry professionals!), to cosplay and games, streaming and discussion, and even an Artist’s Alley.  
Here’s the quick rundown:
- June 21-23, 2023 (that’s three days, folks - Friday to Sunday!)
- 18+, online only (Most areas of the con will be SFW, but you still must be 18+ to attend)
- FREE TO ATTEND! (Registration is required and must be done so before the convention starts; you can register here!)
- All events scheduled in PST, but all international fans are welcome and most panels (at the discretion of individual panelists) will be recorded for post-convention, on-demand viewing.

SO BAM. hello there folks we are live with the Title Swap!!! let’s just jump right in—BUT FIRST!! yes it’s called the treebark title swap but honestly it’s just for alliteration. feel free to join and draw/write platonic content only. i even separated the shipping part of the server with a reaction role just so if you don’t like it you don’t have to see it, period.

what is this?
TITLE SWAP!!! which is a misleading name but hey. alliteration.
basically, people think of titles! it can be anything from a song lyric to something martyn said on stream, or something from your own wonderful mind. they submit these titles to me. i compile the titles into a list.
artists and writers then have time to claim the titles the same way. low stakes non-competitive, but artists and writers can only pick 3 at a time just for their own sake.
artists must draw a sketch, or more if they want to.
writers must write 300 words, or more if they want to.
if they need to drop a prompt at any time or swap it out for a new one, that’s a-okay. like i said. low stakes, non-competitive.
Timeline
December 1-December 31: fic title submissions (and you can submit bonus ones afterward)
December 15-31: authors and artists can pick your titles from the list (if they want more, they can claim them after, though)
January 1-31: writing month!!
i’ve yet to figure out exactly how long posting time will be, but there will be an ao3 collection and obviously this account. i’ll play it by ear, really, see how many people join and create and go from there.

WIP Wednesday!

Happy Wednesday, my loves! I haven't been as interactive today because I've been wildly busy packing and preparing to jet off on an adventure this weekend to try to meet that dude in the lovely banner that @indestructibleheart made for me. Asking kindly for all the prayers, good wishes, vibes, and manifestations you possibly can for me and for @thinkof-england as we try and make our literal dreams come true on Saturday. But I promise I will get to reading y'all's lovely words as soon as I'm able! I'm not done screaming at y'all! Not ever!

As I said earlier, I haven't had much time this week, so I'm gonna peruse through At the end of a bar, chapter 4 for a little longer-than-normal snippet, I do believe.
It’s typical small talk for the majority of the meal, with Pez moaning wantonly after each bite and lamenting their mutual inability to cook anything more than toast, pointedly and loudly saying if I had someone around to make me fat and happy, I’d never leave bed with a wink at Henry, who’s silently wishing that the earth might open and swallow him whole. Alex is the one who politely - and with a hint of color in his cheeks that has Henry wanting to commission a painting dedicated to finding the precise shade of pink and giving it a name - redirects the conversation to how the two best mates came to meet. While Pez delivers a soliloquy to rival even the most animated of actors, complete with sweeping hand gestures and too-long pauses for dramatic effect, Henry watches Alex. Brown eyes sparkling with genuine curiosity, he leans forward with his chin in his hand, one elbow propped on the tabletop, and Henry’s stomach swoops at the sight. It certainly is not made any more tolerable by the presence of Alex’s foot, gently rubbing up and down Henry’s ankle beneath the table. Or Alex’s foot dragging up Henry’s leg, until he’s pressing against the inside of Henry’s knee. Or Alex’s foot pressing forward between Henry’s spread legs to rub against his– “Right,” Henry says, wincing at the sound of his chair scraping against the dining room floor. "I’m just going to take a quick shower.”

Rambles about my Lord Wander AU yippee :)

finally Properly drew my lord wander design...he's basically the same but with more sharp edges (inspired by craig mccracken's concept sketches!) and a goofy outfit for when he's Eviling Out with s shooting star motif on it to contrast lord dom's bleeding heart!!! he does have a suit which the shooting star would be more Clear on but i have yet to get around to drawing it...i have been thinking about this AU for over a year now and i think i've finally figured out enough to talk about it so i will under the cut :)
i think for Structural Purposes i will talk about dominator and sylvia first. wander and dom are the only main swaps in this AU (with a smaller swap i think between the hat and dombots because it's Fun) so everyone else stays the same, though due to sylvia's proximity to dom, she has a significant enough change to discuss!!! (i am gonna sneakily reuse art from my last post for this bit hehe)

dee and sylvia travel around together on their own ship! i think the overall tone would be opposite the actual show—while WOY having wander as the main character has it be a goofy, silly show about love and friendship that's interrupted by dominator who's more serious and designed to be more like an anime villain—the tone of the AU with dee at the head would have it be more generally serious and wander's presence brings in something a bit goofier (this is kinda what he does in the show anyway. like everyone takes things seriously and then wander doesn't and people learn from him)! so dee and sylvia are both more keen to use a bit of Violence to get through everything. though that's not to say there's No goofiness, of course there is i mean. when your main opponent is lord hater of course there is!!! dom's also a menace to him like wander is, just in a bit of a different way. they just normally show up and beat them and hater doesn't react well to that of course—his degradation as a villain still ends up happening
dee also builds her little bot friends, for both practical purposes and companionship purposes :) she still names them in numbers though, not out of lack of care she is just absolutely dogshit at naming, forgive her

anyway a reason i brought up the tone thing is that wander isn't necessarily revealed just in the 'season 2' of the AU. there's kind of a looming threat in the background contributing to that. it's gone by lots of different names in lots of different galaxies, but generally is referred to as The End of the Galaxy (or just The End for short!). as suggested by the name, loads of different galaxies have been destroyed in the past. kind of like a force of nature. survivors don't really seem to be sure what exactly it is, only that it's been called by a different name each time, and nobody could stop it before it was too late. and guess who that is!!!!!!!!!!

our silly little friend whom we love the best!!!!!!!
i REALLY REALLY love roleswaps that keep the characters' personalities as intact as possible and that's what i tried to do here!! this guy may be evil as hell, but he's still Wander. he loves friends and having fun and still has that cheery attitude! he almost seems completely harmless at first! and that is part of the Plot in my head is, actually. my first ever thoughts of that spurned the creation this AU were him being a seemingly completely innocuous recurring character throughout the first 'season' of the AU, just showing up at random times, being Wander, you know. all that stuff. with the main gang not really paying him any mind, calling him a 'wandering weirdo' (since he always disappears before they can actually ask what his name is...). and none of them recognize him as The End until he actually reveals himself.

but see, he's actually grown quite attached to them! through all his time following them around, he thinks oh...aren't these folks just lovely!! he truly actually sees him as his friends. and so to honor their wonderful nickname for him, and to pay homage to his dear buddy hater, he decided his name this time around would be Lord Wander! and he'd be a Professional Villain, so they could hang out even more!! isn't he just so nice!!!
and he just doesn't seem to play by the rules at all...while they're trying to fight him, he's giggling and dodging out of the way, hitting them with...pies? just generally bugs bunny-ing out on them? he spends his time messing with them, annoying them, all the same insisting he won't fight because it's Too Violent—you know, the guy who's Killing People. it frustrates them all and he has such fun Playing with them...except dee.
one of my favorite things in the show is how wander just straight up does not like dominator. so i felt it'd be funny to keep that. dee ignores him when he's being all zany like that and he HATES her for it. he won't say it Directly, but it's kinda clear in his attitude how much she annoys him. and with all his Evilness, this would not lead to good things.
another thing about the way He Is is his exemplified traits of the other characters. like how dom was more excitable than wander, tougher than sylvia, more evil than hater and smarter than peepers; lord wander i think would be more chaotic than dom, faster than sylvia, more obsessive than hater, and more strategic than peepers (spinel if you're reading this Thank You for those last two).
anddddd i also must mention his luck because that's Very interesting in this scenario...i do think he has some form of Natural Luck Magic, and he does still have his hat (there's lots i have in mind about the hat. but i won't get into it right now), but a non-insignificant portion of his luck in the show does come from the good karma he receives from helping others. meanwhile lord wander does lots of Bad Things. does he rack up bad karma? does he do good deeds when not Eviling Out in order to cancel it out? i had these same questions a year ago and honestly i am not sure which i want to go with. both are fascinating to me
i do think that unlike dominator he would be in some way redeemable. i don't have his entire methods and motivations mapped out yet, but it's hard to find a way where he just Wouldn't be redeemable. because he's wander. you know? unlike dominator being lonely being why she didn't just kill everyone, wander does genuinely see them as his friends. he's just got a really, REALLY fucked up way of showing it. i've even considered the idea that he doesn't Actually go out of his way to kill people and only destroys the planets, making sure there are survivors but Hmmmmm i don't know about that one. it's a tough balance trying to make sure he's an actual threat. but it is something i consider. him being like a natural disaster in a sense.
this ended up being very disjointed but iiiii needed to get my thoughts Properly out there. here's the twitter thread i made last year of my initial thoughts. i Do have More in my head but i'm not really sure how to get them down in a way that makes sense...i would love to talk more about it though (especially since i have not talked much about the others other than wander. sorry he is my favorite. but i do think about the others A Lot i just didn't know what things to talk about hegshgshhg) so if anyone wants to hear more insane ramblings👍👍👍tell me👍👍👍👍👍👍i'm not normal about it👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

Can you talk more about the whole "Chase and 13 as siblings" deal? I've seen it everywhere,but they seemed more like ordinary friends to me. Neither of them gave me the "found family" vibes.
To be clear, it's totally fanon. They are not found family in canon, they aren't even super good friends. I'm pretty sure it comes from the common perception in fandom that they're House's favorites/the ones who view him and/or are viewed by him as his children. Which I guess makes them siblings? (I don't even think, technically speaking, that's true — House doesn't think of either of them as his kids tbh.) I am a huge enjoyer of it, though, so I can only give my reasoning; the short version is I think they have a lot of potential in this direction.
So first of all, the two of them are like. Lowkey so alike. Like the venn diagram of them is sort of just a circle. They both had traumatic family histories involving mothers who died young and who they resented/'hated.' They're both intensely private people, 13 going ahead and making that a meme but Chase just as good at it as she is. They both have histories on the show of sleeping around and engaging in reckless behaviors as a reaction to depression/trauma; they do both have close relationships with House, I think it's overstated a little in fandom but it's also true; House and 13 are obviously very close but Chase has a whole pair of S8 episodes highlighting the same; he's also the fellow House has known the longest, who stayed the longest. They're both perceptive and bright and have similar senses of humor.
As you said, they are friends. They enjoy one another's company, we see they have fun hanging out. 13 alludes to going drinking with Chase sometimes in Last Temptation. After Hours proves that Chase knows where 13 lives, that she can call him past midnight and he'll show up no questions asked. Despite both being super private and secretive, they know one another's darkest secrets: Chase is the only person besides House 13 has told about killing her brother and going to prison. 13 is the only person besides Cameron Chase has told about Dibala. (House and Foreman figured that one out on their own. Also, last time he told someone it ended his marriage, so it's kind of Insane he tells 13. Like. Wow.) 13 went a year not telling anyone her name, Chase wouldn't even confirm he was catholic when House guessed it, and yet these two tell one another things. Even in Private Lives, before they really knew one another, Chase and 13 were having serious heart-to-hearts about the divorce and whether or not Chase was pretty; these just… aren't conversations he, at least, has with other people.
Also, let's be frank. The show was setting them up to fuck. I think some of this is meant to be ship tease, in all honesty. Chase outright propositions her. One of their earliest bonding episodes is Private Lives, which has a sort of flirty bit at the end and is all about their failed romances. But thankfully — because we all know how much the show sucks at romance — it never happened. So what we're left with is two characters who are weirdly close, have a weird amount of heart to heart moments and bonding (like… compare Foreman and Chase, who have known one another forever but never have these sort of sincere 'moments'), and are incredibly similar. And who also are often framed specifically as 'House's children,' if not as as unit: Chase is the prodigal son, 13 calls herself the prodigal daughter. 'siblings' make sense. People also don't really like to ship them, myself included, although tbh they make a good amount of sense on paper. Maybe because of the built in messiness (she's Foreman's ex, technically; she leaves the show for long stretches; the show sucks at romance), maybe because people love found family, maybe because folks definitely prefer to lean into 13 dating women. And because people don't want to think of them as romantic options for one another, how do you define a relationship between a pair of very attractive people without letting that be a factor? Make them siblings!
For what it's worth, I don't actually think they're siblings, or that they think of one another as that. I think they're good friends. But they're also so alike, and open up to one another in pretty unique ways (especially for Chase), and get along well. In a weird way, I think the fact that they probably were attracted to one another and could have slept together but didn't makes them closer in my eyes: they both sleep around at the first chance, so that they didn't (by chance or choice) means they got to build an entirely different relationship. They're both lonely, they've both outlived family, they're both lowkey sort of depressed. And the idea that they could have a family in one another (Chase, for one, admits in S8 he pretty badly would like one) just really appeals to me. (With the added tragedy, of course, that it could only last a decade or so) I think they're good for one another, in that they have a "no questions asked" friendship, they know one another's worst secrets, and those secrets run parallel enough that they get it. And so even though they aren't siblings… I kinda want them to be, you know? :)

i made it a couple of months ago when a recurring theme in a lot of buckt*mmy posts started happening: they were all actually buddie posts in disguise!
like if you look at a lot of headcanons that some people have for buckt*mmy you realize that they either are something buddie actually has in canon or they are headcanons that buddie fans have had for buddie for years now. like for example, “tommy saw buck in clipboard mode at the bachelor and he loved it!” some people said. well we actually know that eddie canonically is enamored by clipboard buck so why do you need to invent it in your headcanons for a new couple? you just want buddie! “we are going to see tommy in a helicopter accident and buck will lose his mind with worry,” some theorize. you can watch the show and actually canonically see buck lose his mind when eddie gets buried under the mud and later when he is shot. you just want buddie! (i could go on and on and on with these examples. “tommy would hate the buckley parents,” and “buckt*mmy being girldads,” and “tommy is buck’s safe space,”…. you want buddie! you want buddie!)
like people really took so many things that are actual canonical eddie traits and started to project them onto tommy. basically, 90% of the time people are writing about buddie but eddie’s name is substituted with tommy’s. people want buddie but are taking buckt*mmy either because that is what gives them the on screen kisses at the moment or for other worse reasons (hmmmmm HMMMMMM).
i truly have yet to be convinced by someone talking about why they ship buckt*mmy over buddie where they don’t mention something that is actually a buddie trait that they’re just projecting onto buckt*mmy.
so that frustration lead to me creating the bugs bunny buddie meme so it could be used in the“you want buddie!” posts. and then it evolved into bugs buddie.

It was fun last year, as far as I know no-one has tried to have me burned for heresy, I could use a fun diversion right about now, and I haven't yet run out of ballads. So here is this year's:
Vaguely Whumptober-Themed Anthology of Folk Songs from the British Isles / Transatlantic Tradition: Part 1
(What’s a random American gal with no English/Scottish/Irish heritage doing listening mostly to songs like these? Blame my parents for raising me on murder ballads and ceilidh tunes.)
1) If only we could hold on: White Squall (X)
A Folk Revival (20th c) composition from closer to home.
I clung there to the stanchions and I felt my face go pale As he crawled hand over hand along the rail I could feel her keeling over with the fury of the blow I watched the rail go under then, so terrible and slow Then like some great dog she shook herself and roared upright again Far overside, I heard him call my name
2) You got away with the crime while the knife's in my back: Dowie Dens of Yarrow (X X)
An old traditional ballad.
A humble ploughman braves mortal combat with nine high-born rivals for the hand of the lady he loves. He wins, only for her brother to stab him in the back. Literally
3) Wrongfully Arrested: Long Black Veil (X) / Over the Hills (X)
An American country ballad and a Celtic rock/metal ballad (covered on hurdy-gurdy!!) which share enough similarities to have come from the same centuries-old traditional ballad. They are both actually original compositions, but the genres owe much to the old tradition.
Ten years ago, on a cold, dark night Someone was killed 'neath the town hall light There were few at the scene, but they all agreed That the slayer who ran looked a lot like me
4) Hallucinations (visions): MacCrimmon's Lament (X)
A haunting tune from the 1745 Jacobite Rising. Stretching the prompt a bit, but for a good cause ;)
A lament for the death of the piper Donald Bán MacCrimmon, sole casualty of the Rout of Moy. It is said that the tune was composed by Donald Bán himself following a premonition of his own death. Lyrics were written later, in Gaelic, Scots, and English.
5) Healing Salve: Witch of the West-Mer-Land (X X)
A Folk Revival (20th c) composition with much the feel of an old trad ballad.
A mortally wounded knight seeks the aid of an enchantress, who tends his wounds with a combination of herbs and magic, saving his life.
6) It's not (my) blood: The Douglas Tragedy (X)
An old traditional ballad.
He lichted doon tae tak’ a drink o’ the water that ran sae clear An’ doon the stream ran his hairt’s blood, and sair she began tae fear 'Rise up, rise up, Lord William,' she said, 'for I fear ye are slain' '’Tis naethin’ but the shadow of my scarlet coat that shines in the water sae plain'
This is the type of family strife / star-crossed lovers ballad that ends badly for all involved. And I do mean all.
7) It's us or them: Henry Martin (X)
An old traditional ballad.
A desperate young man's first attempt at piracy does not go as hoped, when his quarry refuses to surrender. After hours of fighting, he ultimately sinks his would-be prize outright -- perhaps as the only way to save his own ship and crew.
8) Forced to Stay Awake: Captain Coulston (X)
A broadside (19th c) emigrant ballad.
He said my boys do not go down, you need not think on sleep For in a few hours more we shall be slumbering in the deep For a pirate ship is coming down upon the western sea To rob us of our property going to Amerikay
9) Obsession | Frame me up on the wall, just to keep me out of trouble: Lily of the West (X X)
A broadside (19th c) murder ballad with versions on both sides of the Atlantic.
An unreasonably jealous young man with a deadly weapon and a remarkable inability to take responsibility for his own actions. What could possibly go wrong.
10) Blow to the head: Follow Me Up To Carlow (X)
An Irish rebel song. I would be remiss if I didn't include at least one.
White is sick and Grey has fled, now for black Fitz William's head We'll send it over dripping red to Lizzy and her ladies
11) Loneliness | No trace: Lament of the Fisherman's Wife (X)
A Folk Revival (20th c) composition, but a tale as old as time.
Now she has come down to condemn that wild ocean For the murderous loss of her man His boat sailed out on Wednesday morning And it's feared she's gone down with all hands
12) Starvation: The New York Trader (X)
A broadside (19th c) - or possibly older traditional - emigrant ballad.
Our cruel captain as we did find Left half of our provisions behind Our cruel captain, you'll understand Meant to starve us all before we reached the land
13) Multiple whumpees | "Death will do us part": Lord Thomas and Fair Elender (X X)
An old traditional ballad found on both sides of the Atlantic.
At his parents' urging, a young man marries for wealth rather than love. (Or the conventional racist beauty standards of the time -- elements of this tale are very dated.) The wedding ends in a murder and a murder-suicide.
14) Hunting Gear: Van Dieman's Land (X)
A transportation ballad. Gotta have one of those too.
Come all you gallant poachers that ramble void of care That walk out on a moonlight night with your dog, your gun and snare The harmless hare and pheasant you have at your command Not thinking of your last career out on Van Diemen’s Land

Outer Rim Marches, #0.1
In January, I started a westmarches campaign for Mothership RPG. This is the first post in a series of play reports and mini-reviews I intend to share of the campaign-in-progress.
Let's call this post "Zero Session #1," in a series of Zero Session posts, where I'll get into the how/why of organizing and running this campaign.
Why? Well, I own a ton of Mothership modules. I've been playing and writing for Mothership RPG for over two years, yet most of my sessions became playtests and that "work-only" connection to the game was burning me out.
So, I decided to build a sandbox campaign around the physical MoSh games I have in hand, and to find folk to play at an open table.
For now, ok, sure, it's more of an open table sandbox for interconnected one-shots than a "true" westmarches game, especially since the game has only one GM (me, but I'm hoping to open that up soon). But Outer Rim Marches sounds cool, eh?
Initial Forward Operating Base (F.O.B.)

The PCs arrived at Sater's Redemption. They work for The Company, who hired them to represent their new presence amid a mess of other factions, and leases a ship, The Orpheus, to the Crew.
(We decided the official corporation name of The Company that owns their ship will be revealed in play. That hasn't happened yet, eight sessions later. I love hanging this important piece of worldbuilding in the balance for when it can have a bigger narrative impact. Not knowing wtf is going to happen is one of my favorite parts of running ttrpgs.)
The Crew's job: explore the Outer Rim to establish footholds in new trading hubs (F.O.B.s), discover novel exploitable resources (artifacts), capture profitable exobiological lifeforms, and spread the influence of The Company.
The above graphic might be familiar to folk who follow my substack, the 5 Million Worlds Rokaner Report. Each month, I release a free sci-fi adventure setting, and this station was the featured world in the April edition. A taste of things to come.
Game Organization
When I set out to recruit players, the first important bit was setting a firm, regular playtime. When people reached out, I sent them the Consent in Gaming fillable PDF to get an idea of collective Lines/Veils. Once I got that back, I sent a google survey to gauge interest in modules and game commitment to split folks into ping-able groups.
The playtime is working out well. We had one three week break, I was out sick one time, and only once did we have not have enough folk to play. Ten sessions out of a possible fifteen since January!
I kinda fucked up the module-interest part of the survey though. I listed module names, and without content tags this was pretty useless for the players (outside the BIG names, like Hull Breach). I intend to redo this survey soon, and I'll share a copy here when I do!
The player commitment bit was super helpful, at least. Since I run games on Discord, I split players into three groups: the Command crew who vote on which job to take, the mainline players are the Crew I ping each week to advertise the game (I make an "Event" in Discord), and and a final Cryo group to call on when games don't fill up right away.
This has worked super well for me, even when I drop the ball on giving the players the Event ping in advance.
The Sector Map

I built this hexmap using Sectors Without Number, which is a sector generator for Stars Without Number. I opted for this against the recommendations of Mothership's Warden's Operation Manual because in a westmarches campaign, from what I've understood, the world is meant to be established once the game begins. I think this is especially important should other GMs and player groups begin playing in this world.
To be blunt, I found using this is kind of annoying. There's a lot of irrelevant SWN info to delete, TONS of systems to hide individually, and it's pretty intensive to integrate module info into the systems.
In short, listen to Sean McCoy's advice in the Warden's Operation Manual if you're starting your own Mothership game and don't fucking do this, haha.
And to be honest, I'm not sold on this even being useful as a sandbox tool intended to be shared with other GMs, even. The verdict is still out. To be continued in another Zero Session post down the line.
ANYWAY! This map looks empty, but that's because it's the player-facing starcharts the Company gave them. PCs need to buy hyperspace route maps at various hubs to explore beyond these bounds. So the star and hyperlane layers hold loads of hidden info.
Feel free to poke around the current state of the sector.
And I do like the shift from a web to hexmap. Little swirls of points get me all crossed up. The Jump-drive distances in Mothership are amenable to using hexes, and tracking distance (i.e. time passed) is straightforward.
ORM Campaign Sneak Peek
Mothership space travel takes a long-ass time, in case you didn't know. To date, we've played nine adventures over ten sessions, and over two years have passed in the campaign world.

The players skipped over a lot of systems to go to Hardlight, which they've recently learned is on the edge of the Public Sector (from Hull Breach). Gonna be some interesting sessions coming up.

Cringe is Dead: A Fool's Perspective
(AKA I need to write and feel the need to bring my inner child out)
A lot has been labeled as cringe, the classics being self-inserts, and for a long time, I never let myself indulge in the art that is self-inserts. I have made them. But including myself in the story of my favorite shows and movies was never something I crossed the barrier of for fear of being labeled as cringe and cast out as an outcast among the fandom community.
But as I've grown older, I've realized I've pushed down all my 'cringe' wants and let them manifest into my inner child desires. Like, okay sure, I would like to ship myself with a character I like (multiple times), and yes I've wanted to make fanfiction with myself as a main character. But the reason I never did is because of that fear. And I don't like that fear. It brings out anxieties that just make fandom culture toxic. Now you don't have to agree with me (I'm really just venting), but I hope you agree no one should be outed in a fandom for their interests. Of course, there are problematic types (ones that I don't have to name and don't want to), which shouldn't be encouraged. But we as a community agree there are dos and don'ts of the fandoms.
But the self-insert doesn't have to be one. Yet it's made to be one.
But honestly, it's like saying making too many ocs is bad. Is it? No. It's called being creative and inventive. I've made dozens of Animaniacs ocs and they only encourage me to create and write.
The idea that cringe will always be around is heartbreaking, but we have to realize calling something cringe is the same thing as outing a person for their interests. I could even be called cringe for saying this, but I would like to make a self-insert. Who doesn't want to be their favorite show? Their favorite movies? Books!
Cringe culture is just another excuse to out people. We become bullies by encouraging cringe culture. So why not cancel the cringe culture? Why not make it cringe to be in cringe culture?
I don't know who will listen to this, but I just want our fandom communities to be safer. And to be honest, from my side of Tumblr, I see plenty of good folks. But what kills me is the people who encourage cringe culture.
So what if I am cringe? Cringe is just another excuse to bully. And I will not encourage it. I want to be free to be a part of a fandom without someone ridiculing me for my interests. Cringe is dead and dead I hope it stays. We need more diversity in our fandoms, it's where the best ideas come from.
Fanfiction is meant to be self-indulgent. Fanart is meant to be fun. So why can't I be both? I don't have to hide. If you don't like it, move on. If you feel the need to hate, I'll ignore you. If you want to call me cringe, then go right ahead, because I'll be as cringey as I want to be and you can't stop it.
Cringe is dead. So let's keep cringe culture dead.

Warnings: kidnapping, getting flogged, sleazy guy, death of sleazy guy
You throw yourself fully into work, life exactly as it had been for the past ten years, and yet suddenly so much more empty. You take your mind off it by keeping busy, fishing, knitting, humming and singing when you’re alone to ward off the sickening silence.
One day you’re minding your business at the marketplace, selling your fish, when you see someone that looks like they belonged with the late Shadow crew. You subtly keep your eye on him, and whaddaya know, overhear him grumbling to his partner that “none of this would have happened if Graves had listened to me and not taken the deal with General Shepherd…”
General Shepherd! Good grief that sounds like a big wig name. You file it away for later.
“At least that damn Cap’n Soap and that Ghost of his are right on track to the trap.” His companion mumbles. Your ears perk up even more at that, heart racing and mind going off at speeds unimaginable.
“Damn right. Seems they fell for it hook line and skinker. I just wish we hadn’t lost the whole damn crew for it.” the man scoffs, “Y’think if I complain about it to Shepherd when we report in, he’ll compensate us?”
“Unlikely.”
Well. Now you’ve got a million and one thoughts occupying your mind. After a night of pondering what to do with this information, you decide it’s about time for a long overdue visit to your dear cousin
So you sell your stock, let the neighborhood know you’ll be out, leave a note on the tabe describing your whereabouts in case the two did come home before you did, put on your pretty new boots, holster the new flintlock pistol Simon got you, and hitch a ride with the traveling merchant to the big city a day’s trip out
Your cousin is a captain of his own little passenger ship, ferrying folks between France and England. He also had quite a way with words: where you were a fisherwoman by trade, he knew how to fish for information.
He eagerly welcomed you into his home, and listened intently as you explained the situation. He oohed and aahed at your ring, congratulated you, and got serious as you explained the more delicate details.
“You know what? I betcha Ms. Laswell would know more about that. Why don’t we find her at this event, I’ll introduce you to her, we’ll see what we can learn, and then we’ll go from there?”
“That sounds fantastic, thank you Leo, I knew I could count on you!”
So you go to the event, a little out of sorts but confident for the sake of your husbands. Leo introduces you to a whole selection of people, young and old, man and woman, some in military uniform, others in nobles attire. He lead you to a distinguished woman in a crisp military uniform, her stature sharp and poised.
“Ms. Laswell! How are you this fine evening? Let me introduce you to my cousin,” and so Leo goes on and on, and somehow turns the conversation toward pirates, and from there to the infamous Captain Soap
You learn a lot you hadn’t known that surely must have been known by the wider public and likely wouldnt have been news had you not been from a small town
“Mr. Connell,” Laswell narrows her eyes at Leo, “I know you well enough… what is it you’re fishing for this time?”
“Who, me? Don’t be silly,it’s my cousin who’s the fisherwoman.”
“Yes, well, it was nice to meet you, ma’am, and always good to see you Mr. Connell, but I really ought to get going.”
The event had certainly been a learning experience, as you’d learned a lot about the many different pirate crews on the seas, but most important was learning who General Shepherd was. You’d been able to catch a glimpse of him surrounded by a group of others, and even caught some of the conversation. The man was in charge of putting a stop to piracy, and hated Captain Soap specifically with a passion. He very assuredly stated that soon those pirates shall be no more
None of that helped you figure out how to help your loverboys, but it did give you a starting point on what exactly could be going on out there and the nature of the trap.
Leo suggested you tag along for his trip to France and back, see the sights, relax a little, possibly hear some gossip that might further paint the picture of what’s going on out there. You readily agree.
And as a matter of fact he turns out to be right. General Shepherd’s wife just so happened to be on board. She openly complained about how the man was married to his job and how even with her all he’d talk about was how much he hated those pirates. “But he promises soon they will be no more. He’s going to have them killed at the Cape of Good Hope, you see! Oh, it certainly gives me good hope to finally be rid of those pesky pirates.”
You feel sick to your stomach all of the sudden, and excuse yourself from the conversation by virtue of sea sickness. You don’t get far though
It turns out that being on a ship with a big wig is a horrible idea. Pirates strike at that moment, tearing through the ship, looking for one Mrs. Shepherd. You glance back at the noble and jump to cath her as she faints from the stress of the situation.
Which is how the pirates find you, cradling the limp body of their target. What looks to be their captain haughtily strides in, glares down his nose at you tow, then tells his crew, with a strange accent you don’t recognize “An attendant? Take them both.”
As you’re being taken away, you notice the pirates setting up some sort of charges all over the ship, connected by a wire. Your cousin is slumped against the mast cradling a bloody wound in his abdomen, eyes angry but body unresponsive. A pirate hands a little block to Makarov, the last pirate on the boardwalk. With a press of the button, he returns to his ship, and just as the pirate ship gets some distance from the passenger ship, a quick chain of explosions demolishes the ship and all who were left on it
Which is how you end up on a certain Captain Makarov’s ship, confined to a fairly spacious quarters above deck, but prisoners all the same. You do your best to comfort the hysterical Mrs. Shepherd, even as your own heart is aching with the loss of your cousin and the barely suppressed panic at the entire situation. To those pirates, you are no one. Mrs. Shepherd at least had a chance by virtue of being an important hostage, but you? You’re thought of as nothing more than the lady’s servant. Easily dispensable.
None of the crew care enough to pay much attention to you two though, and that is a small relief. They feed their hostages the bare minimum, then lock the door on their way out.
Well. All but one. One man keeps sending you sleazy glances, but thankfullyhe hasn’t tried anything. Yet. His gaze makes you lad the pirates hadn’t bothered patting you down for weapons. Your pistol was still in its holster, hidden under your skirts.
You and the missus play memory games to pass the time and make the fear feel less overbearing. Sometimes you sing a song to stabilize yourself. Mrs. Shepherd greatly appreciates the sound, though she comments it’s not quite in tune as this one singer she met. Mrs. Shepherd loves to talk and she easily fills the silences with tales of great shows and places she’s seen. You believe a week or so passes in this way.
You have a nightmare, once, waking with a gasp. When the sight that greets your eyes does nothing to alleviate your stress, you close your eyes, curling up with the blanket wrapped tightly around your shoulders. You imagine being within Simon and Johnny’s embrace.
The days become oddly routine.
Until one evening, about an hour after you got your usual dinner, a crewman returns to the quarters. He points a stubby finger at you.
“You. Up. Let’s go.”
Stiffening, you rise and follow the man out. He grabs your upper arm to steer you where he needs you to go. A careful survey of the situation reveals that it seems the ship is partying. Half the men are drunk and the others are either on their way there or busy playing cards, chatting with each other in a foreign language, laughing rambunctiously.
The man leading you guides you right to Captain Makarov himself
“Servant girl.” The captain greets. “My crew tell me your siren song has them enchanted. You must understand, they have not been in a woman’s company in much too long, so the bar truly is very low, but they claim that you have the best singing voice they had ever heard. Sing us a song, servant girl.”
You stiffen, suddenly aware of the many eyes on you. You want to be defiant, to spit in his face and tell him you’re not a servant, least of all to him, but. But you must be cautious. You must be careful. You are dispensable here.
So you sing a song, and then another when asked, and another. Some of the pirates take out instruments and start playing along, the drunk ones warble along with you, and it seems to be quite the jolly experience for the whole crew. But you couldn’t force yourself to relax in this company even if you’d tried. You stand off to the side once no one asks for more songs, quiet as a mouse, as they continue their merry making. You don’t dare move from your spot until the captain give you a little clap, says “Very good.” like you’re a trick dog that deserves a treat, and then a crewman take you back to your prison.
Mrs. Shepherd, of course, wants to know everything that happened. After hearing the retelling, she for some reason gets it into her head that the Captain ust have liked her, and oh how scandalous! But perhaps you could use this to your advantage! And-
You listen to her prattle on late into the night, until she finally falls asleep. You can’t help but wonder if you’re even going to survive this whole ordeal. How stupid of you to have gone on this whole trip. Had you really thought you’d be able to do anything to help your lovers? Where were your boys now? Halfway to their destination? Likely within each other’s arms, Johnny’s deep voice lulling them to sleep. How you wished to have just one more night within their embrace. Would they ever know what happened to you if you died out here?
Cut to Johnny and Simon on the Stalker, yelling at their crew as they fight an oncoming storm. The ship tips dangerously to the right, the crew holding on for dear life to not topple into the waters, and then it rights itself. Waves slosh over the sides of the ship, and bucketfuls of rain hit hard, making everything slick and wet. Simon just barely saves a crewman from falling over the side of the ship, then holds on himself for dear life as the ship tilts again. A ray of moonlight breaks through the clouds. Just a little longer, Johnny thinks as he ties a rope. Knocked off his footing by a sudden wave, Simon starts sliding across the deck. Johnny catches him just in time and pushes both of them into the railing as a barrier between them and the ocean. Just a little longer.
The rain eases up and the waves settle slowly, and suddenly it is like there was no storm at all. A cheer raises up from the crew, the moonlight a gentle reminder that most folks are asleep at this hour. Soon, after checking everything over, everyone settles down for the night.
Simon drags Johnny into bed, both of them exhausted but glad that the worst of the trip is over with. They’re halfway there, and then they could make the trip back home, back into your arms.
“What d’yoo think she’s doin right noow?” Johnny asks tiredly, his eyes half closed in an attempt to stay awake.
“Probably got her guitar out. Singing a song ‘fore bed.” Simon murmurs, eyes already closed.
“Ah miss ‘er”.
“Me too.” Simon sighs, “Soon. We’ll be home soon.”
Soon.
Cut back to Makarov’s ship. The following morning is awfully quiet on deck, but the prisoners’ breakfast is served as usual. Unfortunately, it is served by the sleazy man, who has a disgusting grin on his face. He drops the breakfast off on a table and closes the door behind him as he steps closer. A pit of dread fills your stomach.
“You put on quite the show last night, little girl. Were you showing off just for me?” He closes in on you, cornering you with a hungry gaze. Mrs. Shepherd, who watches this all unfold wide eyed from her seat, starts shouting and screeching for help.
You try to unexpectedly make a run for it, but he is faster, coils an arm around your waist and throws you down onto the floor. Your ears ring for a moment, and he’s already on top of you, his hands scrambling to push you skirt up. You kick him inthe face, your own hands racing up your thigh and taking out your pistol
He only has time to widen his eyes before BANG… and he’s lying on the ground in a puddle of blood
Many feet come racing to the door, and a group of pirates stumble through the doorway, shouting, enraged when they see their fallen comrade. You hardly pay them any mind, trying hard to take deep breaths and not throw up, but your eyes are glued to the now dead man.
In walks the captain, and with one look at the scene, the trembling woman with her skirts hiked up, the gun held loosely in her hand resting on the floor, the dead man- he snarls a command, and his crew dutifully follow it.
The gun is pocketed, the dead man dragged away, and you are forced to your feet and marched out to the deck.
You’re pushed to your knees in the middle of the deck, which is unusually quiet -most men likely hungover and still asleep after the wild night they had. The few men that were up and about had all turned their attention to the current situation. The captain drags your head up by fisting a hand in your hair to meet his gaze.
“Now. I commend you for fighting back. For that, you have my respect.” The captain concedes. The men around boo and holler about injustice. The captain raises his voice. “All of my crew know that what he was trying to do contradicted with a direct order.”
The crew fell silent.
“However.” He lets your hair go. “You killed one of my men, and for that, you must be punished.” With an imperious glance, and a tilt of his head, he shrugs. “Twenty lashes.”
Your breath picks up, but you grit your teeth. You would live through twenty lashes. It would be horrible, and painful, and leave you even more scarred than you already were, but you would live.
They tie your hands to a post in front of you and tear the clothing off your back. You hold up what’s left of it against your chest, to preserve whatever little dignity you have left. You count in your mind in time with the crew.
One.
Pain, bright blinding pain as you’d never known before.
Two.
You lean forward, press your forehead against the post, gasping as the lash tears through your skin, through your muscle.
Three.
A cry of agony is ripped from your trembling form. Your whole body shakes. You would live. You would live. You would live. You repeat it like a mantra.
Four. Five. Six.
Only six! How cruel. How unimaginable. It feels like your back is torn to shreds, like all that remains is your spine and ribbons of what once was skin.
Seven. Eight. Nine.
…would you live? It feels as though there’s nothing left of your back. Nothing more to flay, and yet the lash kept coming, making you sob with each hit.
Ten.
Halfway there. Only halfway. You would not survive it, your jumbled mind pushes. It feels as though by the time they get to twenty lashes they will have carved all the way through you and have left you with a hole in place of a chest.
Eleven.
A pause. A whistle in the air. A crash as a cannonball collides with the deck, carving its way into the wood.
You can do nothing but lay there, curled up in a ball as the pirates on deck abandon you and rush to their defenses, shouting and yelling and feet pounding over the deck. They are not fast enough. Three more cannonballs have burst through the ship by the time the crew have even a semblance of defense up.
The other ship is already boarding, men dressed in Royal Navy uniforms breaching the ship. Bullets whiz by, wood splinters, the shouting continues. You watch with bleary eyes, then curl up once more, trying to even out your breaths, to sweep away the fuzziness that has overtaken your brain from the pain.
You black out.
