Animorphs #8: The Alien thoughts (pt. 3):
Eva [literally fighting for her life to say these words]: Peter... don't join the military... and you won't attract yeerk attention. Peter: Eva's dead, Imma join the military. Peter [10 minutes later]: So I just accidentally did Nobel Prize worthy science by collaborating with my kid's weird friend. Peter: I foresee no negative consequences to this whatsoever.
I really like how comparatively quiet and domestic this book is. Technically there's kind of a battle at the end, but 90% of it is Ax getting to know his fellow Animorphs, coming to grapple with some hard truths about andalites, and learning more than he wants to about yeerks and their hosts. It feels like a nice pause between the brutal pitched battles of #7-MM1 and #10-#13.
Tobias being snippy the entire time he helps Ax get to the radio telescope, and Ax being super literal to dodge his questions (芦I don't suppose you want to tell me what we're doing, huh?禄 芦Doing? We're flying?禄) is peak them. Plus, Tobias dropping his annoyance the moment Ax starts to go on alone to say "Good luck" and "be careful" is adorable (p. 102).
The scene where Ax phones home is another one I've always loved. He almost immediately gets put in the position of defending the humans as "our allies, not our enemies," he's accused of destroying Elfangor's legacy by telling the truth, he gets pressured into a cover-up that would claim he let the humans morph, and then his dad sadly reminds him that he's supposed to die trying to kill Visser Three (p. 110). Ax called in the hope of an adult to "tell me what to do... give me instructions" (p. 89) and he gets instructions all right. None of them useful.

Ax鈥檚 internal perspective of himself as a dumb jock with an older brother he can never live up to really speaks to a parallel with Jake. Not an amazing student and notoriously clumsy, the main difference is Ax, among Andalites, is more enthusiastic and less guarded than Jake was even before the war.
Jake seems very composed and responsible even to his friends despite being a young boy who does dumb things like walking through construction sites and tiger enclosures. Ax says dumb things where the people he鈥檚 talking about can hear him.
Despite knowing about the war before the other animorphs, was allowed to be a kid for longer than the others and is having to adjust to his reality being shattered months after the fact. He could deny it when he was in the dome, and since his rescue the animorphs have: tried to get him home, starved one yeerk out of Jake, and had one of their biggest victories.
This book is about breaking the other animorphs conceptions of the war (if yeerks starve, the hosts will be free, right?) and Ax鈥檚 conception of his role in it. He鈥檚 no longer there to dip his toes in and watch while the adults do the fighting. He鈥檚 an equal, a vital part of this six man unit. He can鈥檛 stay separate from the aliens that the Yeerks are attacking if he鈥檚 going to fight alongside them.

you know how sometimes a character will mention a food they like and then the fandom will turn that into like 60% of their personality?
ax animorphs is the best character because he genuinely is just Like That in canon. he has repeatedly called the cinnamon bun one of humanity's greatest inventions. he gave a cinnamon bun to a girl he liked as a present. he keeps a framed picture of a cinnamon bun in his otherwise sparsely-decorated room. one time he ate an entire tray of cinnamon buns so quickly that he horrified bystanders and had to have the paramedics called. he later admitted to practicing eating cinnamon buns to prevent himself from going ballistic again. he begins promoting cinnabon as an andalite tourist destination after the war. literally all of these sound like silly headcanons you would read in a tumblr post but they're all real. the cinnamon bun lover of all time.

The CW's Animorphs
I started this back in August to celebrate me finally getting a copy of my favorite MM book and had no idea that once everything comes together it would be the funniest drawing I've ever done.
Anyway, this is the last drawing of 2024, here's hoping I can draw more next year. Take care and happy new year, everyone.

Playing around with a human-to-Andalite morphing sequence, then got the idea it could be a possible redraw of book 8's cover! I'm not sure which way I'm gonna run it, I kind of like both the original sequence (top) and the cover framing (bottom).
Obviously, poofy jackets aren't gonna work like morphing outfits, so you gotta tie it around your waist if you don't want to lose it. Or you could keep it on I guess, but I figured this was more interesting!

Animorphs #8: The Alien thoughts (pt. 2):
Look, it's been said before, but the plan to send Ax to school is truly godawful. Why school and not another setting where an extra kid will stand out far less? Why pass him off as Jake's cousin (and thus Tom's) instead of Cassie's or Marco's? Why "Phillip" and not Axel or Alex? Clearly, no Marcos were consulted in the making of this strategy.
I love the moment where Ax thinks Jake is about to fistfight Mr. Chapman in an effort to save Mr. Pardue. Because it would be a spectacularly stupid thing to do, but also an extremely Jake thing to do.
"You know something, Ax? Sometimes I get the feeling we humans are just pawns in this big game between you andalites and the yeerks. We're just ammunition in this war, aren't we?" 鈥斅燡ake, p. 58. That's it, that's the series.
Related 鈥斅營 love how hard Ax resists becoming an Animorph at first. Because if he fully joins this otherwise-human team, then he's going to have to face up to the reality of what his fellow andalites are doing (and not doing) to the humans to "save" them.
On opposite end of the plan-quality spectrum: Jake sending Marco to try and get more information on andalite strategy out of Ax. And then telling Marco to be forthright that that's what they're doing, offering ever more information about their own species in the hope that Ax will reciprocate. And the thing is, it works.

animorphs book club notes:
- tobias regularly goes to concerts as a bird and is Not Subtle - there is at least one person out there timesharing their body with a yeerk because neither wants full control - andalites evolved from squid, have pouches (male), are noodles for the first few years of their life - tony hawk pro skater II is a result of a tony hawk pro skater morph tobias was allergic to and now he lives in the woods
