Harris picking Tim Walz does one extremely overlooked thing: it buys her another 2 weeks of good vibes from her own party going into the DNC.

She's also going to avoid what could have inter-party schism that would have formed had she picked Josh Shapiro, essentially reopening both the fault lines of 2016 (with some slight shuffling) and the only recently healing tensions over Biden's unabashed support of Netanyahu's genocide. Tim Walz avoids that and energizes the tiktok progressives who have been all over Walz for a while now.

She also avoids the possibility of a more prominent anti-war protest at the DNC akin to the '68 DNC.

I have no doubt there will be pro-Palestine demonstrations at the DNC in two weeks, but the intensified microscope the issue would have been under for the many days between today and the DNC would have only made it significantly more divisive and more amplified. Juxtaposed with an party tear with labor and progressives vs business and centrists and you're looking at a 1968 style riot. It just reopens the campus protest issue all over again, except even worse and closer to the election.

I don't know about other pro-Palestine activists out there, but I at least feel like the Democratic party is giving us a chance. I think protest is still ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY, we didn't get the wins of Harris calling for a ceasefire or picking Walz without agitation and protest. It works, this party is movable. We might have a seat at the table, finally.

It's up to us to shatter that image and make it clear that the DNC is a genocide convention, and that people in Chicago and beyond stand with Palestine and against US imperialism.

DNC: Barack Obama backs Kamala Harris, protesters fight police

Former US President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama at the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday night urged Americans to support Kamala Harris in her 11-hour presidential contest against Republican Donald Trump, US media reported.

Obama has thrown his considerable political capital behind Harris, who is seeking to make history on November 5 as the first woman and the first black and South Asian person to be elected US president. Obama told delegates on Day Two of the Chicago convention:

“We do not need four more years of bluster and bumbling and chaos. We have seen that movie before, and we all know that the sequel is usually worse. America is ready for a new chapter. America is ready for a better story. We are ready for a President Kamala Harris.”

He lashed out at Trump, the Republican who succeeded him as president in 2017, and praised Joe Biden, his vice president, who was forced out of the 2024 race by Democratic allies who feared he would lose to Trump in November. Obama also added:

“History will remember Joe Biden as a president who defended democracy at a moment of great danger. I am proud to call him my president, but even prouder to call him my friend.” 

“Yes she can,” Obama said of Harris, prompting the boisterous crowd to repeatedly chant the phrase, recalling Obama’s own “Yes we can” campaign slogan.

Obama was introduced by his wife Michelle, who tops the Democrats’ wish list for a future president. Michelle Obama said, alluding to Obama’s first presidential campaign in 2008:

“America, hope is making a comeback.”

She warned that Trump would try to distort Harris’ truth, just as he has been doing “everything in his power to make people afraid of us.” She also added:

“His limited and narrow view of the world made him feel threatened by the existence of two hardworking, highly educated, successful people who also happened to be Black.”

Protests raged outside

Outside the venue, a demonstration outside the Israeli consulate in Chicago briefly turned violent after a group of about 50 people separated from a larger protest and bumped into a police line. Several arrests were made.

Protesters on Tuesday chanted “Let them go!” as police handcuffed at least four people and led them away from the demonstration. Police with wooden batons shouted “let’s go” and corralled the demonstrators into the street, preventing them from passing.

Some demonstrators set fire to a US flag in the street as Vice President Kamala Harris’ holiday roll call was taking place at the United Centre, about 3.2km away. Others carried Palestinian flags, and many more wore black and covered their faces.

As the protesters regrouped and approached a line of riot police in riot gear in front of the Chicago skyscraper that houses the Israeli consulate, one officer said into a megaphone, “You are ordered to disperse immediately.”

A group unaffiliated with the coalition of more than 200 groups that organised Monday’s protests advertised Tuesday’s demonstration under the slogan “Make it Great Like “68,” referring to the protests against the Vietnam War that took over the city during the 1968 Democratic National Convention.

The atmosphere, with rows of riot police in riot gear, was in stark contrast to the fact that a day earlier thousands of pro-Palestinian activists, including families with babies in prams, had marched near the convention site calling for a ceasefire.

The consulate has been the site of numerous demonstrations since Israel launched its war on Gaza in October.

Supporters of Israel, including relatives of people captured by Hamas, gathered a day earlier at a pro-Israel art installation near the consulate to urge US leaders to continue to support Israel and push for the release of the hostages.

Aug. 19 (UPI) -- As the Democratic National Convention opened in Chicago on Monday, police already have arrested several demonstrators, including some who breached a security fence.

Protesters broke through the barricades on the north side of the United Center on Monday afternoon. On Sunday, a man and woman were arrested during a protest march.

Four people were arrested on Monday, ABC reported.

Chicago police officers in riot gear were called to handle the situation as Capitol Police wearing gas masks were in the area, WLS-TV reported. They formed a barricade to block the breached fence and pulled protesters from the fencing inside the secured area.

Iron fencing panels were restored and the inner perimeter was not breached, police said.

No skirmishes or scuffles broke out.

The largest protest group, the Coalition to March on the DNC, have demonstrations planned for the convention's first and last days, with thousands of activists, including students, expected to show up in protest of Israel's war in Gaza, according to The Hill.

Coalition to March on the DNC, which represents more than 200 activist organizations, said about 15,000 people were at a rally Monday in Union Park, near the convention site.

The city has designated Union Park as a protest site. It includes a stage, a sound system and portable toilets but tents are not allowed.

Protesters included native Chicagoans. Ken Justus, 68, who rode his bicycle, brandished a "Swing Left" sign and sleigh bells. Nevertheless, Justus said he plans to vote for Vice President Kamala Harris.

"I want to make sure we still have a government," he told ABC News. His motto: "Vote blue no matter who."

Nearby, a coalition of nearly two dozen women from Indiana represent Jewish Voices for Peace. National board member Malkah Bird, 45, said they to put pressure on the White House "no matter who is in office."

"We want our money reinvested in the U.S. to help our communities and not used to bomb Palestinians," Bird said.

Two Chicago aldermen, Carlos Ramierz-Rosa and Byron Sigcho-Lopez, marched through the streets of Chicago's West Side from Union Park toward the United Center.

They then marked back to Union Park for another rally.

On Sunday, the nearly four-hour-long "Bodies Outside Unjust Laws" march was seen going from Michigan Avenue to the loop in Chicago's Grant Park.

The protest, organized by a coalition, largely called on Vice President Kamala Harris, now the Democratic nominee, for action on Israel's ongoing war in Gaza.

Chicago police arrested an unidentified 23-year-old woman and a 28-year-old man in the 600 block of Wabash Avenue, where the mostly peaceful event first began. They were charged with misdemeanors for alleged defacement of property and allegedly resisting/obstructing an officer.

Local officials previously said that the city was bracing for scores of protests for various causes expected to blanket the Windy City while the Democrats are in town. Several different activist groups have demanded action on reproductive rights, LGBTQ+ issues and a cease-fire in the Israel-Hamas war.

On Friday, Chicago's Mayor Brandon Johnson unveiled a new police helicopter and the $11 million Bell 429 twin-engine helicopter is expected to be busy during the coming days with as many as 25,000 extra people possibly expected to arrive to protest in the streets. This is expected to come in addition to the 50,000 convention attendees also expected.

Many protesters likely are to stand in solidarity with the Palestinian cause. The Chicago area is home to the largest Palestinian population in the United States.

The National Lawyers Guild says it has set up a hotline and trained about 150 lawyers and law students who are ready to assist individuals in protest-related arrests at the DNC.

Recently, U.S. Northern Illinois District Judge Andrea Wood ruled that the current protest route near the convention's site at the United Center gives demonstrators a chance to "speak near their intended audience" and does not violate their First Amendment rights, even though the organizers had wanted to march closer to the United Center.

Meanwhile, 30 DNC delegates elected to represent the "uncommitted" vote at the DNC say no endorsement for Harris will be given without assurances her administration will embrace an arms embargo on Israel.

The DNC will meet this week through Thursday with planned night-time activities at the United Center in downtown and daytime events at McCormick Place about five miles away

holy shit i need to take a break from politicalblr or whatever tf we’re calling it. harris escorting protestors out of her rally isn’t her being pro genocide. the issue with so many of us on the left is this black and white thinking. i’m not doing apologetics. she’s not pro genocide. you need to wake the fuck up, think a little bit harder, and vote blue. it’s not “fascism in a blue or red tie.” this is the best chance we have to beat the WAY MORE POWERFUL fascists on the other side. get it together.
