why didn't peridot stay disabled… it would've added to their whole message of being different being okay and diversity and…. sigh….
#she didn't have magic in a magic-oriented society and used limb enhancers as a disability aid…#but they immediately threw out her limb enhancers because they posed a threat to them I guess#and then they gave peridot metal powers anyway#sorry I'm thinking thoughts.#su does a lot of things really well I very much admire it's queer rep and interesting storyline and mental health commentary etc#but the thing it does quite poorly imo is disability rep. at least when it comes to physical disabilities#and this is also a problem with steven's healing powers#while I understand he has diamond powers which means he's going to have quite strong abilities#I think healing powers have to have some limitations or else you're implying that disabilities can be cured#which is a very uncomfortable concept#steven cures connie’s eyesight without knowing he even can (and without her permission ofc)#which I feel at least implies he can cure blindness#and he cures literal death so I don't think there are Any limitations?#which is frustrating#sigh…#don't get me wrong I love this show#I just. I want disability rep I don't see enough good disability rep#I love toh forever for giving me the clawthornes because hello chronically ill characters I love seeing myself in you 🥹#anyway if I ever make art of peridot someday I'm gonna try to remember she deserves new limb enhancers or something.#or if I make a human peridot I'll give her prosthetics or some kind of mobility aid because! she deserves it I love her#you know what I'm thinking of kid cosmic too why doesn't chuck get a new translator or a wheelchair#bro said it hurts to speak english and he literally does not have legs get this man some disability aids PLEASE

"she could see everything that happened in the past 15 years" this is meant to be. everything the Doctor's done since he left Donna in Journey's End, right? that is..... sure some math. i mean - Eleven was hundreds of years old, i forget the exact number, but i know he probably spent close to a thousand years in that regeneration (i don't remember how long he was on Trenzalore). Twelve spent billions of years in the confession dial. did we just....forget all of that?
#ramblings#doctor who#wild blue yonder#i've seen so much raving praise for that episode and it was pretty good but like#i haven't seen anyone mention the. little inconsistency here#i mean donna had been gone for 15 years but the doctor was gone for BILLIONS#there should be a massive memory discrepancy here#idk i mean i've been enjoying these specials? but i sort of feel like all the hype i've seen is a#prelude to an almost pedestalization of rtd as showrunner because everyone's tired of the mediocre writing#which don't get me wrong i'm excited to have him back but i don't think these specials are the pinnacle of dw#the way a lot of the fandom seems to be acting like? idk man#the trans and disabled rep was REALLY GOOD though that heals my heart a bit#alright rtd now do young 20 somethings using canes next so i feel less self-conscious going normal places with mine

I know it’s been months since Good Omens s2 came out, but I’m still so grateful for the disability rep with Saraqael and others in the background. it’s so rare to see disabled characters who are just living their life and are just there as a part of the story, not as a tragedy or a moral or an object of pity like in a lot of media. So the fact that Saraqael is a disabled character who uses a mobility aid (a badass celestial mobility aid!!) and their narrative had nothing to do with their disability…it just meant so much.
I use a cane a lot of the time, and honestly, I started crying the first time I saw them, because I got to see someone kinda like me onscreen like that. And as such an awesome character too!!
Thank you for that. I’ve always looked up to you as a writer, and you do such marvelous work with representation. I love seeing and relating to such awesome diverse characters onscreen, but that was something so, so special to me.
Anyway, I hope all is well for you and your family! Thank you for all you’ve shared with us over the years.
- Teal
I'm really glad. And I'll tell Liz Carr. It will mean a lot to her too.

How The Owl House did amputee representation right before Eda ever lost her arm - Disability in Media
[ID: A screenshot of Eda from The Owl House, an old woman with pale skin, very large, grey hair and pointed ears in a red dress. Beside the screenshot on a dark pink background is text that reads "Disability in media, How the Owl House got amputee representation right before eda ever lost her arm." /End ID]
Dana Terrace's The Owl House has some of the best disability rep I’ve seen on a Disney channel show in a long time, with Eda, the main character’s mentor, being one of many stand-out examples.
Plenty of people have discussed how Eda’s curse and the loss of her magic can work as an allegory for disability and how refreshing it is to see a story (especially one aimed at a younger audience) who’s focus is not on her “overcoming” it, but learning to accept it as a part of her and go from there. Eda’s story tackles a lot of subjects that are often mishandled in other examples of disability representation, from the subject of parents who refuse to accept, to glass siblings and much, much more, The Owl House handles all these topics beautifully.
But one thing that dawned on me during my most recent re-watch of The Owl House is how well Eda (and later Lilith) worked as amputee representation, long before Eda actually lost her arm.
One of the side effects of Eda and Lilith’s curse is that sometimes their body parts, mainly their limbs, can fall off. It doesn’t hurt them, and Eda is seen removing them intentionally at multiple times in the series, but they can always be reattached.
[ID: an image of Eda holding her sister Lilith's hand. Lilith is a pale woman with long, black hair, wearing grey clothes. She is looking at her other arm suprised, as her hand is missing. Luz, a Latina girl with short brown hair and a purple hoodie is looking on, smiling. /End ID]
While most likely unintentional, the way the show depicts this with Eda in particular is exactly what I wish more people would do with their prosthetic-using amputee characters.
Eda detaches her limbs, especially her legs, when they’re inconvenient or when she’s relaxing.
[ID: an image of Eda laying on the couch in a bathrobe, her hair in a towel. She has taken her legs off, throwing them to the other side of the seat. /End ID]
The fact that this is mostly played for laughs is actually a good thing in my opinion (though obviously, the show’s overall tone is part of that), as it shows the audience who are mostly children and teens, that in a world of weird and downright scary (from the perspective of the characters) things, this isn't one of them. It’s just a thing she and Lilith can do, and it can even be funny.
[ID: An image of Luz and Eda dressed as pirates. Eda is sitting on the ground, her legs detached and off screen somewhere. /End ID]
It does startle Luz and Lilith on a few occasions, but that’s more because they didn’t know the curse could do that, but once they’re introduced to it, it’s never really brought up as a big deal again.
I’d love to see more amputee characters who do this with their prosthetics. So often media is almost afraid to have amputees take their prosthetics off on camera or on the page. For some folks, our prosthetics are like a part of our bodies, but that doesn’t mean we never take them off. Show your leg amputee flop on the couch and throw their legs across the room. Have them go without on occasion, not because they have to, but because they just don’t feel like putting them on.
Likewise, the owl house creators never shy away from showing Eda when her limbs aren’t all attached. A lot of media, and kid’s shows in particular, will avoid having an amputee character’s stump visible if they ever do take their prosthetics off - treating that part of the character’s body the same way they treat gore or nudity. I’ve talked before how this actually does have a real impact on how kids in particular react to amputees - I’ve legitimately had kids I worked with cry when I took my prosthetics off, then immediately calm down when they see there’s nothing "scary" under my socks. As much as I love How To Train Your Dragon, it’s very guilty of this. Hiccup looses his leg at the end of the first movie, and wakes up with his prosthetic already attached. The Netflix series has a few instances where he has his prosthetic off, but the camera almost always avoids showing it until he can cover it up again, or is super zoomed-out so you wouldn’t be able to “see anything”. To their credit, they do get better with this in the last movie (though it's still always covered), but for the majority of the series, they are very reluctant to have any shots where hiccup’s leg is in view without the prosthetic (unless they’re very far away).
[ID: a screenshot of Hiccup from How To Train Your Dragon 3, a white man with short brown hair, and one leg missing, wearing armour made of black dragon scales and no prosthetic. He is holding onto toothless's head, a black dragon. /End ID]
Ironically, Eda does (permanently) loose an arm at the end of season 2, but I don’t really have much to say about her as amputee representation on that front, since she’s absent for a lot of Season 3, and when we do see her again, everything is so hectic, the story doesn’t really have any time to focus on her missing limb (which is reasonable). I will say, I do appreciate that they kept the amputation when she's in her owl-beast form in the finale, but there's honestly not much more to say about it. We do see her again in the epilogue after she’s had some time to settle into the amputation, wearing a hook prosthetic, but it’s, once again, too quick to really say anything from a representation standpoint. There's a few little nit-picky things I could bring up, like the fact they seemed to change the type on amputation she had (when she looses it, we see the split was very close to the elbow, but in the epilogue she has most of her forearm again) but those read to me more like animation mistakes or an odd prosthetic/clothing designs rather than a representation issue - and as someone who's worked in animation, given the stress the team was under for the finale, I'm not really worried about it. Like I said, it's more nit-picky than anything.
[ID: A screenshot of Eda, her hair tied back and wearing a red robe and a hook for her right hand. /End ID]
Despite all that though, I still think Eda is still good amputee representation, but mostly because of how they depict her curse’s side effects rather than her actual amputation. She’s honestly one of the only characters that I think you could refer to as “amputee coded” (outside of maybe Teen Titan’s Cyborg), and I genuinely wish more creators would treat their actual amputee characters the same way the Owl House treats Eda in that regard.

Please stop trying to "fix" RTC's disability rep without doing prior research, especially if you are able-bodied.
I'm not just saying this because, on principle, I think it's important to centre & uplift disabled voices in discussions of disability representation. I'm saying it because in practice, I've noticed that when people take the "canon sucked so I'm just going to change it" approach to Ricky's depiction in RTC, they frequently end up erasing the parts of canon's representation that were valuable and important to me, sometimes doing things that are worse than canon.
It's important for a fandom to be able to recognise canon's flaws, especially in its depictions of serious topics. But I often feel that the discussion of criticising RTC's disability rep is dominated by people who haven't done a lot of research or don't understand the issue.
I've found that most of the things I actually consider objective flaws in RTC's disability representation are incredibly underdiscussed. Instead, criticism tends to focus on a few specific points, most of which are things I don't agree with or things that are just objectively wrong. For example - it was not ableist to remove the scene where Ricky concedes the competition. At all. I could even argue that this was a positive change, but it gets lumped in with the more ableist script changes (the 2022 rewrites removing Ricky's disability) simply because both happened after the most popular proshot was released in 2016.
Another criticism I see frequently is the idea that canon should have named Ricky's specific disability and was bad rep for not doing so. I understand the idea behind this and somewhat agree with it, but I also think it's more complicated than most people give it credit for - Ricky specifically has a rare disease, meaning most of RTC's audience would not be familiar with it, and when the musical was written, the intended "official" watching experience was for people to see it live, in a dark room with their phone turned off. While the majority of the fandom (who got into RTC through bootlegs) would benefit from Ricky's condition having a known name that can be easily googled, I think it makes sense for the the writers to avoid using terms the average audience member wouldn't be familiar with, given they wouldn't be able to Google it unless they remembered it after the show.
This wouldn't be an issue, if not for the fact that fans frequently use "canon wasn't clear enough" as an excuse to erase the things that canon was clear about. There is a big difference between a character having some sort of "blank slate mystery disease", leaving it entirely up to the fandom to decide what disability he has, and a character who is explicitly said to have a rare degenerative disease with a clearly shown set of symptoms, without the exact name of the disease being mentioned.
I think part of the issue here is a lack of awareness. Many people don't understand how one disease would cause both Ricky's inability to speak and his need for mobility aids, and so they assume canon must have just chosen these symptoms at random. And since "choosing symptoms at random" isn't exactly a great approach to disability depiction, these fans then try to "fix" canon by coming up with separate plausible explanations for Ricky's symptoms.
But the fact is that Ricky's symptoms were not chosen at random - they are in line with symptoms that are caused by real-world neuromuscular disorders. This is heavily implied to be the type of disability Ricky has (I've made a post explaining why, check it out on my account if you want).
Seeing erasure of Ricky's disability is always upsetting, but it's even more upsetting when it comes from people who think they are "fixing" canon by removing "unrealistic" depictions of disability. A person being unable to talk and a mobility aid user due to neuromuscular disability is not unrealistic. Just because you aren't already aware of how something can exist, doesn't mean it is unrealistic.
And there are other issues too, such as whether the "feed him through a tube" meant anything with regard to ricky actually having a feeding tube or generally how well canon handled ocean's ableism, where I feel like people are too quick to jump to "I don't know why canon did that, must be bad representation, I'll fix it" without fully understanding the issue. And if you try to "fix" canon without understanding where it went wrong, you might just make it worse.
I just think it's time for everyone to step back a bit and remember that it's okay to not know everything. Ricky is a character with an underrepresented disability, and it makes sense that some things about him might not be things you've seen before or things you understand well. It's okay to be confused. It only becomes a problem when people make assumptions and then spread these assumptions without fact-checking.
It's very easy for misinformation to get spread online. One person makes a claim in a post, and other people just believe it without fact-checking, because they don't see why the OP would lie about it. And often OP isn't lying at all, but they may be misunderstanding something. A lot of the time, complex subjects like disability representation can be accidentally stripped of important nuance in a game of telephone, when a discussion aimed at one group of people gets taken out of context. And the 2017/2018 RTC scripts frequently get lumped in with the ableist post-2022 script, purely because they both come after the most popular version (the 2016 proshot bootleg).
So before you try to "fix" RTC's disability representation, I think it's important to take a step back and think about what you think RTC originally did wrong. What makes you think these parts were wrong? If it's simply because you don't understand it, or because other people have called it bad representation but you don't understand why, it's time to do some more research to figure out how to best fix it. Otherwise, you might do something that is also bad representation, or plain erasure - and you might do this in an attempt to "fix" one of the things that RTC actually did a good job of originally.
My asks are always open if you're interested in hearing one disabled person's perspective on how RTC handled a specific topic. Please do not assume you don't need to ask because you already know what my perspective will be, and please don't feel like you're bothering me by sending an ask. I am much less bothered by good-faith questions than by people speaking over me, even unintentionally, or taking it for granted that i'll agree with their views.
I think getting a disabled perspective is incredibly important if you're planning on changing any aspect of ricky's disabilty in fanworks - there is a fine line between genuinely improving on canon's flawed rep, and just erasing canon's rep (including the good parts) and excusing it with "well it was bad representation anyway". Remember, disability erasure isn't only when a disabled character is made completely abled - it is possible to erase an aspect of ricky's disability even if he is still disabled.
This is a little more blunt than my usual posts, but it is very important. Thank you so much for reading.

I want to take a moment to applaud The Bad Batch for its disability rep, especially Crosshair in season 3.
The tremor? The frustration of not being able to make shots he KNOWS he could once upon a time? Shaking out his hand as if that will fix it?!
To see a character with the same tremor as me. Who has the same ticks as me. To see him struggle between what his brain knows in practice, but his body won't let him achieve.
That means a lot.

CARMEN SANDIEGO? In 2024? It's more likely thank you think! Please excuse the shit quality for some reason I wasn't allowed to upload the normal pdf and I had to upload a fucking screenshot???
So my friend convinced me to watch Carmen Sandiego and since he's watching ALL of Ninjago for me I thought it was the least I could do to watch four season of a show with a pretty decent concept but uh... yeesh, don't get me wrong the show is really fun but lord have mercy does it have problems especially the last two seasons which were just so wildly disappointing to me. It went from a show with an interesting look on morals to pure pro-cop and mostly black and white thinking so quick (that not mentioning the breaking up a found family full of people with abandonment issues) it was honestly just so disappointing so me and the friend who introduced it to me decided to rewrite it! (I will not be animating nor do I plan on doing more than MAYBE a comic or art piece here and there because my chronic pain ridden ass can not handle that much lol)
The main goals are to:
1) Flesh out characters that aren't Carmen and actually give them reactions based on their lived experiences and how they might realistically react instead of what the show needed to move the plot along
2) Having characters other than Carmen be actually relevant to the plot the main one being Chase Devineaux who we're gonna kind of have as a parallel to Carmen (trust me yall) as kind of a "What if Carmen didn't have her friends/family to ground her and fall back on" but for all the Chase fans out there (gods I hope there's some other than me) he will be getting a happy ending but bro is getting put through the RINGER first
3) Have both A.C.M.E (now standing for Administration for Containing and Monitoring Evil) and V.I.L.E be the bad guys. Also just as an extra bit of fun we're making VILE a full blown cult, they were very cult like in the show so we're just gonna make it one. Both are going to be very morally questionable and while it'll take a bit longer for ACME to show it's true colors don't you worry they definitely will ;)
4) We're doing canonical lgbtq+ rep, I know the show teased a lot of relationships and really only gave yall background gays not to say thats bad but we can do better than just a brief shot of a damn taco truck. I mean like come on in a story about a young woman going against the government for the greater good why not put some rep into it ya know!
5) We're making it light sci-fi, not like SUPER high tech but definitely beyond what we've got currently, as shown with Carmen's prosthetic, and don't worry I'm doing my research as a disabled person I know how it feels to be misrepresented or ignored so I want to make sure I'm being realistic
6) PLAYER ISN'T GOING TO BE A CHILD! I don't know if this bothered anybody else but to me it was really weird that this 16 year old's only friends were in their 20s!
Alright I think that's what I'm gonna say for now, I'd love it if yall tuned in for updates if your curious since this is a passion project for me and my friend and we're having a blast writing it!
As always I am still working on stuff for Ninjago cause I could never abandon my one true love, currently there's a Pixal drawing in progress (it's giving me hell T-T) something for Cole and Geo, and something of Sora MAYBE even Euphrasia if I'm feeling up to it.
Having said that I hope yall have a great day/night and PEACE OUT!

Sometimes i think about the books I wanna/am writing, and worry im not putting enough diversity in them. This is in multiple forms; race, body type, disabilities, etc, etc. Then I remember that I have a lot of them down, but don't think about it often. I mean, i think the disability thing is the main issue for me (which is funny bc I am disabled myself lol.)
But, like,
Alton Company: Main character (Fox) is an athletically-built straight young woman of an unknown mixed race
The Call of Divinity: Main character (Divine) is a underweight, aroace, autistic, white teen boy.
FairyTale: Main character (Maisy) is a chubby black girl, who is undecided in her sexuality bc she literally 8yo.
Mind you! This doesn't account at all for bg or side characters!! I really just need to work on my disability rep (I think, lol)!!

This is your daily reminder that anyone can criticise your favourite show. And disabled people, queer people, mentally ill people, and people from any other minority group are always allowed to criticise representation within your favourite show.
Obviously, a few people from the same minority group will disagree with this criticism. Everyone's gonna have a different opinion - that's great.
But that does not in any way invalidate the original criticism, especially when it's coming from so many people with visible mobility disabilities, survivors of suicide and abuse, and queer people.
That doesn't mean critics think the show is evil and should be destroyed forever. It doesn't mean they think that the show isn't good representation for you, with your specific intersection of representation needs, or that you can't enjoy it - or that you are a bad person for enjoying it.
Critics are allowed to stop supporting the show for future seasons because they dislike the representation, or the writing, or for any other reason. If you are sending anons over something so minimal as someone no longer wanting another season of your favourite show, then, frankly, I suspect you are a literal child. But also, you have a weird cultish relationship with this fandom and should probably step back.
Hell, I'm gonna try and step back, for the sake of my own mental health. I always wind up getting at least one weird anon per fandom, as I am Loud And AnnoyingTM - to the point where I see it as a bit of a badge of pride. Means I'm part of the fandom now, if I'm in deep enough - and noisy enough - to get nonsense. That doesn't particularly bother me.
But I cannot deal with the constant frustration of seeing fellow fans not understanding the very basic concept of 'a stranger on the internet can love this show, but still be disappointed in it and criticise it, and that is not an attack on me, personally'.
I encourage you to love the show! I love that you love it! I still somewhat love it, and I certainly love to criticise it! Criticism is just another form of interaction with a piece of media, and one that is integral to any fandom! It's not a threat to you or your appreciation of the show!
What becomes problematic is when you mock criticism, especially when it's coming from a whole bunch of marginalised voices.
Why are you being so aggressive about decrying everyone who complains as 'overemotional' and 'hysterical'? Why are you trying so hard to minimise and misinterpret the opinions of visibly physically disabled people who have struggled a lot with their disability, when invisible disability rep and casual positive disability rep are no less important but entirely different sorts of representation?
If you disagree, maybe just have some empathy and let marginalised people speak? Why are you so determined to die on the hill of defending a TV show from any and all criticism?
Which is all to say:
Your fandom is not exempt from criticism. Yes, you are still allowed to love your blorbos and your show. This is pretty fucking basic Fandom 101.
#ofmd#our flag means death#izzy hands#ed teach#stede bonnet#ofmd meta#blackbeard#the edcourse#the izcourse#sigh. me every day: I'm gonna step away from this nonsense for real now#but now I feel the anger has moved into just... frustration#gentlebeard#blackbonnet#steddyhands#do people really not understand this in the year 2023??

SUBMIT THROUGH THE FORM IN THIS POST, NOT MY ASKBOX, FOR YOUR BLORBO'S SAKE. I WILL LOSE SUBMISSIONS IF THEY AREN'T ALL IN ONE PLACE!
Hi! I've never run a poll blog before, but I like the "do you know this character" type blogs and I searched and didn't find one for ADHD characters so I decided I'd make one!
Submission Guidelines
Both canon and non-canon ADHD characters are allowed, but YOU MUST PROVIDE EVIDENCE FOR NON-CANON ADHD CHARACTERS! I completely understand just looking at a character and going "oh they have the Vibes" but it's not enough to be posted on this blog. Even just "they exhibit a lot of impulsiveness and distractability" is enough for me to go on - just give me SOMETHING to work with. However I reserve the right to not post a character if I don't think the evidence is compelling enough, i.e., if you don't list any traits that are specific to ADHD.
You may not submit real people, only fictional characters. I find it disrespectful and uncomfortable to speculate on the mental health of real people, and will not be posting those for my own comfort, even if those people will likely never see it. Also, the point of this is characters, not real people, so even people who have said they're ADHD won't be posted.
YOU MUST SUBMIT THROUGH THE FORM, NOT MY ASKBOX. I am, of course, ADHD myself, and I need all the submissions in one place or I'll lose them.
Got it? Here's the link to the form.
About the Mod/Blog
You can call me Mudkip if you'd like, or my name, Réka. She/her only please, do not use any other pronouns for me including they/them. I am an adult. I was diagnosed with ADHD at a very young age and have it bad enough that I consider myself disabled. So ADHD rep is very important to me! And I'd like to both learn about ADHD rep I might not have heard of, and spread awareness of what ADHD people are like through the characters that people might not even realize are like us.
My icon is the character 707/Seven from Mystic Messenger, I chose him because although it's a bit hidden he is canonically ADHD! There's a call where he talks about how he talks to himself, and if you say "I heard people with adhd talk to themselves a lot..." he agrees with you, as well as displaying other ADHD traits through the whole game.
...is this entire blog partially part of my agenda to spread the word of canon ADHD Seven? Maybe.
Header is Zack Fair from Final Fantasy VII; he's not canonically ADHD but there's strong evidence for it and I couldn't resist using the "Me? Gongaga." meme.
I often can't resist making non-poll posts on this blog, although I swear I try. If you're just here for the polls you might want to filter the tag "not a poll"!
My main is @hungarianmudkip69 .
Tagging System, for your searching or filtering convenience
#poll - the polls. this only includes "do you know this character" polls, not any other polls I might do.
#not a poll - anything that doesn't get the above tag. Including other types of polls. You know what I mean.
#canon adhd character - polls for characters that are canonically ADHD.
#noncanon adhd character - polls for characters that aren't canonically ADHD, but have solid evidence behind the headcanon.
#poll results - a reblog of an ended poll with calculations of how many people know the character and what percentage of those people know/see the character as ADHD.
#poll reblog - any reblog of a poll that isn't poll results.
#other polls - polls from other blogs.
#blog management - anything about the running of the blog.
#ask - asks. I don't know what else to tell you.
#approval inquiry - asks asking if a character has been approved for posting.
#submission inquiry - asks asking if a character has been submitted.
this was part of the original pinned and I always like seeing this part of poll blog pinneds so I'm leaving it
I'm supposed to tag other polls for visibility, right? This was largely inspired by @who-do-i-know-this-man and @doyouknowthisdisabledcharacter as well as @do-you-know-this-queer-character !

“Hello, my name is Beatrice Silva and I’m calling in regards to my wife’s disability insurance plan?”
Beatrice can't stand still when she speaks on the telephone, it’s an old, anxious habit she picked up from a young age. When she ran away from home, everything she did was on her own - even when she moved to the ranch, Suzanne made Beatrice set up all of her own appointments.
At the time, Beatrice thought it was incredibly unfair to ask a seventeen year old to take on so much responsibility in a new life like that. She realizes now that what Suzanne was actually doing was preparing her for adulthood because she was going to treat her like an adult.
In hindsight, it was exactly what Beatrice needed and now she’s the one in her marriage that handles the phone calls.
Because for as much as Ava is outgoing and chatty and so easy to win everyone over, she is utter shite at speaking professionally on the telephone.
So instead, as Beatrice waits for her call to be processed, Ava is at her computer getting all of her personal information typed out on her laptop for Beatrice to read off as she sets this up.
“Hi, sorry for the wait Mrs. Silva. What can we do for you?”
Beatrice lowers her phone a bit and gets Ava’s attention. “You ready?” Ava nods, her own hat on her head as she spins the laptop around for Beatrice to see. She’s typed everything out on the notepad in a big, bold font. “Yes hi, so my wife’s wheelchair is starting to show a lot of wear and tear - also she’s had it for almost five years now. We live on a ranch and she does a lot of work around the ranch which means the chair has seen a lot of miles. We were wondering what steps we would need to take for her to get a new one?”
“Of course, we can get you started on that path. Do you have her information handy?”
“I do,” Beatrice sets her hat down and pulls the monitor open more.
For the next hour, she sits on the phone with the representative, is transferred twice, then somehow ends back with the first rep and is told by the end of it that the process cannot be completed until Ava has seen a doctor and gotten a prescription for a chair.
“A prescription?” Ava asks later that night as she and Beatrice are settled on the couch.
“That’s what she said.”
Ava scoffs, dipping her warm pretzel into the cheese a little harsher than necessary. “It just doesn’t make any sense. Do they want me to go see my PCP and fall on my face trying to walk to prove that I need it?”

genuine question, hope this doesn't come across as transmisogynistic, but why use the terms TMA/TME? i've never heard the "affected" and "exempt" terms when it comes to any other type of bigotry. i mean, you wouldn't say ableism affected or ableism exempt, you say disabled and abled. i think a lot of people dislike TMA/TME specifically because "exempt" implies that that type of bigotry doesn't affect you at all, which isn't true for a lot of intersex folks. wouldn't it be easier to say transfem and nontransfem if that's all TMA/TME are supposed to mean?
I love genuine questions! Though keep in mind I'm not an expert by any means. (I feel the need to add this because I've already said I'm not a sex ed "expert", merely a scholar but I want to be clear that applies to this as well.)
Because just like any other bigotry, the study of transmisogyny is different than the study or discussions surrounding ableism or racism.
As I mentioned in an earlier post, "nonBlack" is not a term that was used in other discussions of bigotry ("nonDisabled" or "nonTrans" weren't terms.), but it was born to discuss the particular way antiBlackness works.
Often, we create what we need. Sometimes that's a term you've never seen before!
But! I want to say that you've misunderstood something.
The definition of exempt does not mean "you will never experience anything connected to this bigotry"
In fact, exempt was used to mean essentially the same thing as disabled vs abled (or Black vs nonBlack, as I mentioned).
(This ask explains what the actual definition of exempt is, for those confused.)
Many words have more than one definition and the one you're using for exempt is actually fairly rare. I hate to rep Merriam-Webster in any situation but next time you think a word isn't being used properly or is being used strangely, check if it has multiple definitions first!
Also TMA/TME is mostly shorthand for nontransfem/transfem but not all TMA people identify as transfem (especially in Black and Brown circles, since there are certain racialized gender identities some of us prefer instead.).
And also, you might be shocked to hear this but many "nontransfem" people also did not like that term either, as it pointed out they held gender-related power over transfem people specifically. Which is the same issue many people have with TME/TMA.
Hope this helps! Let me know if you have anymore questions. <3
