New year, new me? 🤔
Diet culture might use that common saying to make you believe now is the best time to change your lifestyle.
It’ll make you believe that the answer to “new year, new you” is some diet.
But what’s wrong with the current you, anyway?
Before you jump on to the latest fad diet, take some time to sit with the question of why you want to go on a diet in the first place. Is it because you want to change something about you? Are the voices your own or that of diet culture?
Growth is beautiful, but don’t force yourself to change something about yourself just because society (and diet culture) tells you to.

When we emotionally eat, we’ve allowed stress to become the driver and create a divide between the mind and body. By practicing self-awareness and intuitive eating, you can begin to break down that barrier and merge the two. Self-awareness cultivates body-awareness. Self-awareness is how you begin to align the mind and body.

We all know that moving our bodies can be good for our mental health, but we often forget (or don't know) that not moving our bodies can also be good for our mental health.
Sometimes allowing myself not to move is the best thing I can do for my mental health. For example, if I planned on moving that day but my schedule is more packed than I thought it was, allowing myself to remove movement from my schedule is a big relief.
Also, a gentle reminder that even though exercise can boost our mood, make us feel better, and help us mentally, it doesn't replace therapy.
Has *not* moving ever benefited you in any way?
(My goal with this question is not to discount the benefits of exercise (if that's available to us) but to demonstrate that choosing not to move our bodies sometimes can also be a form of self-care)
.

❕💌❕ there are so many times I still need to remind myself that no two bodies are the same. your hunger cues will differ from your friends or partners cues — and very often, even from your own on a day-to-day basis. so, if you’ve eaten more than your friends/partner, or you’ve eaten more today than you did yesterday, remember that that’s normal. don’t punish yourself for it. instead, give yourself a pat on the back or a little self-five for listening to what your body needed today. #edrecovery #eatingdisorderrecovery #antidietculture #dietculturedropout #intuitiveeating #foodislove #hungercues #selflove https://www.instagram.com/p/CQjVwUGh42e/?utm_medium=tumblr

Yes! Other than this, the #tokyoolympics2021 made me realise how many of the athletes look different from the aesthetic diet culture of gym fitness that is more common. They don’t care about thigh gaps, visible muscles, flat stomaches or round booties, they care about performance. Most of them look more like fit real everyday people you meet on the streets than that version. Beauty standards, diet culture and superficial shallow ideas of fitness has ruined genuine fitness. These are Olympians, for God sake! People, take a closer look, admire their athleticism, the hard work they put in to even qualify, not the aesthetics! #beautystandards #dietculturedropout https://www.instagram.com/p/CSAJcJuhZRj/?utm_medium=tumblr

DIET CULTURE . I feel like I am constantly being accosted on social media of all varieties by messages from other women asking if I want to join some form of a weight loss journey with them. . It is often masked by the “it’s not a diet, it’s a lifestyle change” or “it’s not a diet, it’s just about being healthier” excuses. . It is so normalized among women to commiserate over our bodies, our weight, our stretch marks, etc. . BUT WHY? . Why do we allow society to normalize diet culture to this extent? . First things first, what is diet culture? . Diet culture is not necessarily just being on a diet, it is a system of beliefs that worships thinness. That worship of thinness also equates it to health. Because this system of beliefs reveres thinness as the ideal, it encourages weight loss and shrinking our bodies. . It sucks our time, money and life by convincing us we need to count every morsel we put in our mouths - spend money on the latest hot item to help us achieve smallness. . It demonizes certain foods and ways of eating while others are praised. Diet culture also loves to simplify the entire issue (which is at the intersection of genetics, societal influence, and so much more) to will power. . If you’re interested in learning more and how to care for yourself while unlearning diet culture head to my website to read my latest blog. . All of my blogs are linked in my bio. . . . #antidiet #antidietculture #dietculturedropout #dietculturesucks #intuitiveeatingjourney #intuitiveeating #intuitiveeatingcoach #bodypositivity #selfhealingjourney #newblog #selfhealers #selfhealer #selfhealing #divinefemininerising #divinefeminineenergy #thickthighssavelives #thickgirlproblems #aeriereal #aerieswim #bikinilifestyle (at Colorado) https://www.instagram.com/p/CFKjWtoDnYI/?igshid=kguj7l8r0hdj

Meet: @Srsly_mike_Stern I’ve lost 370 pounds so far. Through my life, I was always gaining weight. When I started college, I weighed 400 pounds. Due to a genetic defect, one of my corneas began to deteriorate, and with it, my health. My weight skyrocketed to 600lbs due to a combination of not being able to go outside and eating poorly every day. I had two main motivations: my older brother wanted me to be part of his daughters life, and after my transplant I realized that the gift I was given would go to I started with a few small life changes. I began only drinking water, and walked every day. I joined the YMCA, and just walking turned into running and lifting. I did my first 5k Sept of 2016 and it took me an hr to complete. Since then, I have done a sprint triathalon, a 10k, a half marathon, and am training for my first full marathon. I am now 220lbs, far away from the days of being 600lbs and struggling to go up or down stairs. Body positivity to me is accepting who I am/others and being comfortable. Starting Tip: Find your motivation to push yourself and don't let go of it. ________________ How has the Wlstories community influenced your journey? Answer: Wlstories community has influenced my journey to not feel alone in my journey and supporting me and motivating me to keep looking forward because my journey isn't over yet. 📸 SUMBIR YOUR OWN @MYWLSTORIES !! As we start 2024, we are being hit with an onslaught of ‘New Year, New You’ themed messaging that suggests our best self is just around the bend. Whether it is advertisements selling us weight loss programs, coaches touting productivity hacks, or influencers hawking “health” tonics, the message is the same—our current self isn’t enough. As consumers have become savvy to the fact that diets don’t work, diet companies have tried to obscure their messaging, claiming to be “anti-diet” or “mindful eating” despite promoting plans that involve calorie counting, food restriction, and a focus on weight loss. Don’t be fooled, if it looks like a diet, sounds like a diet, and tastes like a diet, most likely it is a diet (hint: promises of weight loss are usually a clear giveaway something is a diet). And we all deserve so much more than a lifetime trying to shrink our bodies over and over again. Here’s to 2024 being a year we leave dieting behind and embrace our fullest most authentic selves 🎊🥳🎉🪩

This was the first diet soft drink, it was created for diabetics and then mass marketed for weight loss. You ever get to thinking about how the fashion industry could make a killing by slowly trimming down clothing sizes, then turning around and selling diet plans? Yeah. I find it incredibly difficult to love my body, I spoke to my therapist yesterday about how I had started posting about body image as well as mental health related stuff and she said “body imagine is heavily tied in with mental health and can make such a big difference to our mental wellbeing once we realise that” It’s only recently that I have started to realise that for myself, hating my body has caused me years and years of depression, so on top of dealing with borderline personality disorder I have also been dealing with disordered eating. I don’t have an eating disorder, I will never claim to but I have taken part in some awful diets, I’ve restricted my body of what it has needed, I’ve binged to the point of excruciating pain due to the depression that comes with restriction. I’ve drank alcohol as a way of self medicating in the past and been thankful when I have thrown up and seen it as a way to lose weight, that’s not a healthy way of thinking and I’m sorry to my body for all I have put it through. Those kinds of thoughts still arise at times and at times I still dislike my body but I’m working on it. I’m sick of feeling like I have to shrink myself for society’s standards, So I’m making a vow to myself to accept, honour and love my rolls 💜 Bra is Bridget balconette by @curvykate from @brastop #honouryourself #loveyourself #bodyconfidence #bodylove #bodyacceptance #honouryourcurves #bodypositive #bodypositivity #bodyposi #babesunite #borderlinepersonalitydisorder #disorderedeating #dietculture #dietculturedropout #effyourbeautystandards #effyourdiet #mentalwellbeing #brastop #curvykate #fatbabe #chubbybabe #learningtolovemyself #iamworthy
