Honestly I get like hating dgr characters, some of them can be very shitty. But like- they’re kids. Even at their oldest they’re only young adults, so it’s kinda hard for me to blame them for making poor moral choices when none of their brains are developed. Like at least 4 years away from full development.

Most people on the server do not have experience with kids, theres should be no issue complaining about how a character treats kids. Most parents are average parents who are doing a lot in their situation what makes them good to people is how much they love their kids, all the parents genuinely love their kids a lot. They are average parents but they are loving parents.

Like. Okay. Don't get me wrong: Disney giving queer rep is important. It's a sign of shifting social norms, a sign that conservative bigots are losing the culture wars, and that is GOOD. If I can't have the utter dismantling of Disney and other such corporations that gobble up all the world's creativity and regurgitate it back to us in the least offensive way possible with the most bland results and worship of the status quo, then I at LEAST want unabashed queerness in my disney media.

But the thing is that content already exists. It exists in pre-code silent films, yes, but it exists ALL OVER THE PLACE. There is queer art made constantly, posted daily. There's plenty kept secreted away, too, because everyone is clamouring to be the least problematic they can be. But so little of it makes waves without being deleted or otherwise lost!

All because SOME people go harass people who don't make 'pure' enough queer media, so the creators quit, or delete, or suddenly make only the most sanitised content so they don't get shit on.

And like, I'm not trying to make this a post about harassment. But it's kinda hard to not mention that so much of our queer art gets harassed off the internet for not being unproblematic!

The thing is we NEED the problematic content! We need it even more than the unproblematic content - which we ALSO need. We need the rawest shit that comes out of a bad break up. We need the shit that shows we're fallible people who sometimes do stupid shit! We need the incredibly problematic writings of someone coming to terms with being queer while still having bigotted ideas to work through! We need it ALL

And the thing is? It's all THERE if you know where to look. At least until someone who is mad that this piece of media dares to not be representative of every single queer person sets a mob on them, as if that is even possible! I know of SO many queer artists who keep their works on lockdown because of this stuff.

I know people who only talk about these long ignored queer arts from days gone by in private because they know that if they recommend it to the wrong person SOMEONE is going to pay - probably them for publicly mentioning a queer work that changed their life.

We need to stop expecting every piece of queer art to represent all of us, and to represent us in a wholly pure and good light all the time, and actually LET PEOPLE WRITE so there will be more stories so the odd of finding one that speaks to you is more likely.

Yes we've all heard aroace people complain about the 'you haven't met the right person' line. But to the idiots citing this as the reason aroace people 'aren't oppressed’: No, micro aggressions aren't what's oppressing us.

I could talk about corrective rape, but I'm not going to because that's not what scares me the most. The worst thing about being aroace (aromantic, and asexual to a certain extent) is that society is set up for couples.

Being aromantic is a crushing economic disadvantage. As a couple, you can save more. As a legal couple, you can borrow more. This puts Mortgages out of reach for a lot of aromantics. Adopting too. Although aro people can adopt, you must have a similar income to a couple, which again, rules out a lot of aros. Don't forget Immigration, spousal visas will never be an option for us.

Being poor and aro means you're denied housing, family, international movement, basically anything that allos of a similar income would get. And anything you can get, you'll have to jump through many more hoops for. But we can't fix this by legalising aro marriage, like we did for the gays. Until our society's economic system is completely revolutionised, we'll be waiting.

It's impossible to compare oppression. You can't objectively say which minority group has it worse and I really mean that. But also I'd rather be called slurs and hated by Christians all fucking day.

It's a problem of the moral absolutism that seems to be a requisite of the internet--on both sides of a given issue. This person is evil and their work is evil and if you buy or enjoy their work then you're evil too!!

If you're reading this: don't feel bad. Love that book, show, movie, painting, or whatever. Do what works for you. Write that fanfic, share that gif, and draw that fanart if you want to, too. You feeling bad is not adding to the net good in the world.

Do what's best for your mental health. That might mean (mentally) killing the author, integrating what you know about them into your reading, or just carrying on as though nothing had happened. The Tumblr Police aren't going to be checking your bookshelves any time soon. And if someone on Tumblr does have a problem with what you're doing? Let them. It's theirs to carry, not yours.

i see a lot of people on tumblr struggling with guilt over their fondness for art that was made by bad people (even when the bad people in question do not materially benefit from it in the jkr way) and i really think if that's a problem for you then you should try engaging with some work that's more than a couple centuries old as a useful antidote. euripides believed and probably acted on a lot of things i consider insanely mind-blowingly evil and this shows up quite a bit in his work but i think it would be both sad and kind of silly to decide his medea cannot ever speak to me because of that
