55 years ago today, January 4, 1969, the final new episode of Wacky Races aired. It is an American animated television series produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions for Saturday mornings. The series features 11 different cars racing against each other in various road rallies throughout North America, with all of the drivers hoping to win the title of the "World's Wackiest Racer". The show was inspired by the 1965 comedy film The Great Race.

The cartoon had many regular characters, with 23 people and animals spread among the 11 race cars. Wacky Races ran Saturday mornings on CBS from September 14, 1968, to January 4, 1969, and in syndication from 1976 to 1982. Seventeen 20-minute episodes were produced, with each of them featuring two 10-minute segments.

The series spawned numerous spin-offs throughout the years featuring Dick Dastardly, the most similar in theme being "Fender Bender 500" in 1990.

In 2017, the series was remade as a reboot, airing on Boomerang. It aired only once on Cartoon Network on August 13, 2018.

Based on the conversation with @soapkaars from our last movie night, because I got obsessed with George E. Stone and kept sending him pics of him and going “Look at my latest little guy!!”. Anyway Willy/Zippy is going to be based on him, and it was hilarious to find out that the shortest member of the Ant Hill Mob is still one cm taller than Lil’ Gruesome. Man is a fucking gremlin. The heights are based off of the actual heights of their IRL inspo or whoever I chose for them in the fancast. I’m on a hunt to find the shortest men in gangster movies and add them into the Wacky Races AU.

The fancast and how it looks so far is under the cut along with my reasoning.

Dick Dastardly – Terry-Thomas (This one is obvious, Dick was based off of the man.)

Red Max – Thorley Walters (I just really liked his stupid energy in Carlton-Browne of the F.O. and how he played off of Terry-Thomas.)

Lil’ Gruesome – Peter Lorre (Again obvious reasons, Lil’ is yet another Peter Lorre expy.)

Clyde – Edward G. Robinson (Again expy.)

Danny/Yak Yak – James Cagney (It’s the vibes. If you’ve seen Smart Money you know.)

Willy/Zippy – Gorge E. Stone (Man was in a lot of gangster movies and worked in a number of them together with Edward G. Robinson. Honestly I just think he is cute and Willy was my fave in TPoPP, so he gets special privileges of being a cute little guy.)

Development art of Dick Dastardly for “Scoob” 2020. I was asked to explore a variety of expressions and poses for Dastardly based on a standing 3/4 model the production had designed. Here is one of the expressions I drew, shades of Professor Fate.

Sometimes you get possessed and you draw a 25+ panel comic about a Boardwalk-empire style alternate universe take on the wacky races where most of the races are bootleggers, moonshiners, and mobsters, with two lost WW1 ace pilots participating and trying (and failing) to not get on the wrong side of their fellow participants.

Note 1: Lil' Gruesome is a blatant Peter Lorre ripoff because in the show his voice actor does a Peter Lorre impression. Lorre being a film noir actor who liked playing terrible people is being honoured here by being cast as a terrifying Gyp Rosetti stand-in, with some Hungarian flair delivered with the help of @faustiandevil

Note 2: Don't worry about Red Max, he'll be fine

Note 3: 'Piroska' refers to Little Red Riding Hood, 'Most, biztos jól össeszartad, nemde?' means 'you just shit yourself, didn't you?' (sorry if I made any spelling mistakes!)

Haven’t drawn in a week, because it’s a quarter end close and I was also forced to work on a Saturday for a few hours. Absolutely disgusting. I’m glad I did manage to finish this up quickly. I miss drawing Dick, he is my favorite homosexual. I also been wanting to draw him and Penny together ever since I found that one image of Diane Cilento and Terry-Thomas together, because it’s them. I mean young girl with a cigar and real life Dick Dastardly with his fancy cigarette holder sharing a smoke. It’s not getting any better than this. Other drawing is more in the style of the actual show with a joke from the Ghost Stories dub, because YouTube kept recommending me compilations of the best jokes from it again.
