More manipulated images! With this one, I managed to do what I wanted last time, with Little Red and the B. B. Wolf. I used this french poster as base:

I've got a reproduction hanging in my apartment.

With Microsoft Photo Editor, I removed the blue background. I could've removed the green border too, but I was lazy, and it's pretty much a solid color, I could've changed it manually if I felt like it. (I'm only realizing that now, though).

On FireAlpaca, I separated the image into the blue part and the rest with two layers. I applied the Ben-Day process I figured out on the blue layer, and changed the rest of the image to a red tint. Then I converted the red tinted version to a two-color vector on Inkscape (the colors being pink and brown).

I repeated the process for the red tinted layer, separating it into two layers, then applying the Ben-Day process on both, one being black over a red background (dark red) and the other being red over a white background (light red).

I'm pretty pleased with the result, the other versions of the image I tried to modify, a long honking time ago, don't look nearly as good, see:

As for the movie itself - or rather, the serial: It's an adaptation of three American serials (made by a French studio, however), starring Pearl White. You know, she was the inspiration for the Penelope Pitstop cartoons, always getting tied up and chained to a railway by bad guys. In the movies, however, she often got out of those traps without help.

The dude in the poster is the villain from one of those serials, Exploits of Elaine. His name is "The Clutching Hand", and he's one of the first movie supervillains - although Fantômas came first. He's also the first hidden villain, which is why he's got the bandana covering his face. Filmgoers had to go see every episode of the serial to narrow down his secret identity. It was kind of like a superhero franchise, you gotta watch them all.

Of course, one of Pearl White's movies, The Perils of Pauline, was produced by William Randolph Hearst, a real-life supervillain, so, let's not give the era that much credit.

now OP, between the Hooded Claw and this Leopold Weasleby the Third fellow...do you think you might have a type? 😂💖 i was actually having a little trouble finding out a lot about this guy, but i must say he is tremendously dashing!!! he's got that Mad Mod look with the cravat and the diamond-topped cane 🥴💖 am i right in understanding that this is actually the robotic disguise of a character named Cole? has he adopted other names? i would love to know more about this universe!! I've been getting into old Hanna-Barbera cartoons lately. So far it's mostly just Wacky Races and its spinoffs Dastardly and Muttley, and Perils of Penelope Pitstop, and I love all of these so much. They're almost constantly entertaining and I'm very endeared to the various characters.

Despite Muttley being my favorite character, I have to say Perils of Penelope Pitstop has to be my personal favorite of these cartoons so far. Its humor makes me lose it more often and the Hooded Claw is a great villain, I love his voice acting. I wish more of the Wacky Racers had their own shows.

I've also seen a few Jetsons episodes. It doesn't make me laugh as much, but it is a fascinating time capsule of the past's idea of the future. George has a lot of red flags, and the world fascinates and terrifies me. Also Elroy is great, definitely the most entertaining character in the show.

Based on the conversation with @soapkaars from our last movie night, because I got obsessed with George E. Stone and kept sending him pics of him and going “Look at my latest little guy!!”. Anyway Willy/Zippy is going to be based on him, and it was hilarious to find out that the shortest member of the Ant Hill Mob is still one cm taller than Lil’ Gruesome. Man is a fucking gremlin. The heights are based off of the actual heights of their IRL inspo or whoever I chose for them in the fancast. I’m on a hunt to find the shortest men in gangster movies and add them into the Wacky Races AU.

The fancast and how it looks so far is under the cut along with my reasoning.

Dick Dastardly – Terry-Thomas (This one is obvious, Dick was based off of the man.)

Red Max – Thorley Walters (I just really liked his stupid energy in Carlton-Browne of the F.O. and how he played off of Terry-Thomas.)

Lil’ Gruesome – Peter Lorre (Again obvious reasons, Lil’ is yet another Peter Lorre expy.)

Clyde – Edward G. Robinson (Again expy.)

Danny/Yak Yak – James Cagney (It’s the vibes. If you’ve seen Smart Money you know.)

Willy/Zippy – Gorge E. Stone (Man was in a lot of gangster movies and worked in a number of them together with Edward G. Robinson. Honestly I just think he is cute and Willy was my fave in TPoPP, so he gets special privileges of being a cute little guy.)
