30. your favourite middle grade book

the great good thing by roderick townley, it was one of the books that got me into reading and is about a storybook princess who lives out her story every time a reader opens the book- until she has to escape the book.

guys why would alice invite her ex and his new gf to her little brother's show? i've got a few thoughts

she's trying to keep sam from drifting off by establishing a neutral middle ground for everyone to be at, where she is still comfortable

she's lonely. she doesn't have anyone else to ask.

her brother needs the people? (not sure about this one cause it seemed packed later on in the episode but he was also asking for money so maybe she thinks he needs the people?)

this is a desperate last ditch attempt at keeping everyone together. she can feel the gap widening and she can't have that

she's also somehow keeping up appearances of unbothered by the horrors and therefore exempt from it

she's trying to establish a middle ground that is exempt from the horrors to save sam from whatever fate he might have

question on tumblr etiquette:

if you fall under a user's DNI list, but that user reaches out to you via ask or DM, without knowing you fall under their DNI list, do you still respond?

hypothetical example: user A specifies on their blog "DNI if you're over the age of 18", but then user A reaches out to user B. User B is over the age of 18, but user A does not know this because user B doesn't mention it on their blog. User B does know that user A does not wish to interact with people over the age of 18. does user B respond to user A?

idea. since askdusttale answered an ask about where dust got his determination from (because dust has SOME determination just so he can remember the timelines and keep going against the human) and said it was totally up to personal interpretation on how he got his determination. so so so like what if what if dusttale's player did something similar to something new's player and changed dust's code to give him determination??? so dust and killer COULD BOTH had their codes tampered with??? the parallels would be INSANE. they both started off as sans and got their codes tampered with by the player but dust and killer went on two opposite paths. dust out of his own voalition decided to go against the human but killer had to team up with the human no choice at all. the opposite parallels go CRAZY oh god im tweaking

killer doesn't know exactly (since i forgot whether or not he can see codes or something like that. i swear there was an image of him describing fell and swap's code and then his own) but he can SENSE that something's off. something's different about dust that he doesn't quite know about. maybe it gets him to ask a bunch of questions that dust is definitely not open to answering because jesus man mind your own damn business but the question that really sets killer off is the way dust answers when he asks "so if you have determination then how did you get it?" and dust just shrugs his shoulders and said that one day he suddenly remembered the resets and then that's when he got it (and then goes back to mumbling to phantom paps or wtvr) and killer's just like. zomg. a sudden change in behavior or mentality that seemingly has no apparent reason related to the human???? like like like when he suddenly had to agree with the player despite literally never wanting to????? killer is over thinking the implications behind this

meanwhile dust is just annoyed now because killer keeps on following him. he keeps asking him strange questions. wtf why is the guy asking to see his SOUL that's incredibly personal???? he just wants to be left alone man he has no idea what's going on

The fact that shuggy cover art that oda decided to draw without anyone asking him to do so is in the chapter called creeping future is giving me too much hope than it should

it is interesting that oda chose to draw them for the cover art. "creeping future" in general is such an oddly ominous title for a chapter, and i think 581's contents directly reflect that. the events of marineford are wildly twisted to lull the public into a false sense of security, but as we all know, the marines' "victory" did not bring peace, and we are still seeing the impact of the power vacuum that whitebeard's death created in-universe.

this chapter contains the beginnings of so many future power struggles -- the worst generation are sizing each other up, the collapsing warlord system has in-fighting, the marines are scrambling to correct their missteps, and all the while, an unclaimed emperor title looms over everyone's heads. so to see shanks and buggy in the eye of the hurricane, enjoying a meal.. it cuts a very sharp contrast, like it's a bubbled-up moment separated from the rest of the world. given shanks and buggy's circumstances 500+ chapters from this point, it honestly doesn't even feel real. i wonder what oda was thinking. i suppose we'll know soon enough :)

FINALLY somebody addressing why I am sad about Rasputin’s characterization this season. Let grandpa get ANGRY let him get PISSED. Let him drop warsats on people again

The three pillars of the Warmind Rasputin in the Destiny narrative are mystery, tragedy, and power. Those are the story roles he fulfills and the themes and settings he provides. The Warmind DLC emphasized mystery and power. Season of the Worthy emphasized power and tragedy. Season of the Seraph so far has leaned hard on the tragedy with a side of mystery. That’s fine. It’s better than fine; I’m living for a Rasputin season that finally hammers home to the general player population how emotional his entire story is (and not just the parts with the Iron Lords) if only because I’m no longer the crazy person sitting in the corner yelling this computer is extremely sad actually here’s a 12-page lore essay based on deep analysis and textual inference. We’ve never encountered Rasputin in such a weak state before and that makes it the best time for a vulnerable narrative. So this season has gone for tragedy with backup mystery. That’s fine.

But let us not neglect his third role.

Why is it so important for Rasputin to demonstrate his power? Or, put another way, why is it so satisfying when he does? When Red shot down the Almighty, regardless of whether you liked the season or even the event leading up to it, when the Almighty shattered and that shockwave cracked across the Tower I bet you felt something. We’ve seen display after display of might from a range of characters, yet nothing - maybe this is a function of who I hang out with, but - nothing evokes as visceral a response from players as when the Warmind acts. Why?

First off I think a lot of people enjoy the narrative of the sleeping giant, the dormant volcano rumbling to life. Remember when the ents go to war in The Two Towers? It’s a real thrill to watch something vast stir itself to war on our behalf, and I am one thousand percent here for that exact trope. Second, Rasputin has a clear and easy-to-sympathize-with motive for some righteous revenge. Third, he has every right to and absolutely should get very, very angry and boy is it cathartic to watch someone vent that kind of fury against the status quo. Fourth, sometimes it’s just fun to watch big space explosions. But after giving it a lot of thought I think there’s another key aspect: because Rasputin is our home team.

Rasputin represents humanity, far more than Guardians do. In the Destiny universe Rasputin embodies the apex of human technology, engineering, creativity, power - human, not Guardian. So we all have a little bit of an affinity for the Warmind, not us as Guardians but us, the players, as human beings, because he is humanity’s representative at the table of Destiny powers. The weapons Rasputin wields are weapons we recognize as our own. The technology he builds evokes real concrete tech we use. He quotes books we’ve read, he plays music we listen to, he cites our history. He’s the home team, and we are all, whether we know it or not, way down deep we are all cheering for him just a little bit, because he represents the real world we live in pitting itself against the greatest threats fantasy and scifi can conjure up. Nobody gave him Light or picked him out as the special Chosen One. All his strength is our strength. When he exercises that power, we see our own civilization sticking up for itself against the unknown. He is, in all goddamn seriousness, Flag Admiral Stabby.

So I guess I’m wrong about what I said at the beginning. There are four aspects, not three, to Rasputin’s role in Destiny: mystery, tragedy, power, and humanity. He is the representative of what the human race can build and do. So let him wake up and demonstrate that maybe humans came late to the table but we sure didn’t waste any time. Let him wake up and remind everyone that humanity’s fate won’t just decided by the immortal god-children who terrorized them for centuries in concert with alien factions with superior technology and much longer histories. Humans can do incredible things when they put their minds to it and they don’t need a paracausal permission slip to try. Let Rasputin show the solar system the creativity, tenacity, and stubborn defiance we like to imagine as our species’ defining traits. Let him bring a gun to a wizard fight. And let him win.

interesting, to me, that Earth decided the Moon was the one celestial body not 'different' enough from 'Earth' to be allowed to remain a part of the Native Sphere

"because it was once part of the Earth itself, long ago", "because of proximity", "because it has such and such qualities"

but really, what makes those qualities Enough? what makes those the determining factors to be on the 'right' side of the line, between Earth and Other? any number of those things could easily be turned the opposite way, depending on your perspective. "it was once of Earth but broke off and is now no longer part of us", "it is out of our atmosphere, removed from 'us' by the vacuum of space", "it doesn't have qualities xyz". and there were other planets and places in space that shared plenty of qualities with the Moon, or Earth, many of them already touched BY humans and their Culture, before the decommissioning of the space program.

so why only the Moon?

the difference, the line, is arbitrary, of course. 'humans decide what is real and what is not'. humans decide what is within, and without. both for celestial bodies, and for people.

I only created my tumblr account two or three years ago. Around that same time, an old tablet of mine began to die. And that tablet was something i used before i had this account. It didn't have this account saved onto it. And because i was so attached to that tablet, it seems to have imprinted a fear of being lazier without it onto my subconscious or something. Because that's a thought I grapple with constantly. I feel lazy online. I use my phone and a new tablet, and i never seen to leave my tumblr dashboard now that i have an account.

But with the old tablet, i used to google things to find info. I'd have to google "Jason Grace x Nico di Angelo tumblr" or "Batman villian headcanons tumblr" or "Martian Manhunter tumblr" or what have you. And that worked for me! But now that i have a tumblr account, i just sit on my dashboard and do nothing. I never really search things up or anything. I just sit on my dashboard and scroll. And this feeds my fear of being lazier without my old tablet.

There's just one problem, however: I can't use the old tablet to figure out if using it makes me less sedentary. Because using it could risk it dying permanently. And i can't handle that thought. So since I can't use it, i can only assume I was less sedentary when i used it. And so i just sit here, worrying about being lazy but doing nothing to correct it. It's a horrible cycle that only ever leads to me making posts like these ones when doing nothing to try and fix my issues.

One thing I really wonder about with the Elden Ring dlc coming is the way the demigods all seem like they might still be alive. All of them continue talking after they've perished, their words echoing in the air; this may be a "death is obviously weird in Elden Ring" thing more than that they're "alive" per se, but the way the scarlet aeonia spell says Malenia "will" become a true goddess and the devourer's scepter says it "will one day become the very symbol of the Lord of Blasphemy" combined with Rykard at least definitely kind of still being there and his comment about how he won't be held captive. Well all together it makes for a "what's up with this" vibe.

EDIT: Oh and of course the mausoleums and everything there. Housing soulless demigods that aren't technically dead? The concept that an eclipse can bring their souls back? I know there's a dark souls reference with the eclipse and the sunlight shields, but I still feel like that'll be dlc relevant.
