FDR the Donkey Collector

This donkey statuette was given to Franklin Roosevelt in August 1934 by the sculptor, Madeleine Park of Katonah, NY. Madeleine Park (1891 - 1960) was a New York sculptor specializing in animal art and was known for working with live subjects. FDR displayed the statuette on a side table in the White House Oval Office.

A factory turns out 'Billy Donk', a donkey toy that a score of young girls hug or drag around. A weeping child stands in the background with a Teddy Bear.

The header reads "THE INTRODUCTION OF THE 'BILLY DONK.'

When Roosevelt had become president, the Teddy Bear was introduced soon after. Bryan's emblematic animal was the Democratic Donkey.
