Writing this rant about jegulus anyway cause why not.

So i got into jegulus originally by reading choices and ahb. I already had a little idea about them beforehand, friend wrote me a whole essay (on the characters and popular ships and why i should join the fandom)

I would definitely recommend reading Art Heist Baby, because that is still one of my favorite fics, and has amazing characterization(in my opinion) for all the characters.

Some of the main reasons i like jegulus:

Too much love x not loved enough (james is usually depicted as the sunshine character, the one that was given so much love he could burst. While regulus is not. He is seen as the one who was ignored, second choice. The one who hides his emotions and becomes quiet and defensive. I think those personalities fit together well.)

They both (in canon universes) are headcanoned a lot to be quidditch players. (i love seeing people fight for opposite teams. they can be rivals, or secretly not rivals)

The rivals to lovers trope (ngl i do enjoy this one. And there is so many ways for them to be rivals to lovers. Quidditch, grades, just because)

i personally love how in contrast to jily, james loving her so loudly and for so long in the spotlight, jegulus is secret, just for them. That james would love him so much that he doesn't talk about it. someone who loves so loud loving someone too much for words?

second on the secret love topic, it gives it a forbidden feel. and especially with how a lot of people put the potters vs the blacks, they are forbidden. And there is something nice about the thought that someone cares so much about you that they would risk things for it.

Reg being that hidden away person gives you the ability to see someone's soft side. To see a place where regulus is safe, able to be himself, his true self. i like that.

James is used to being seen as the hero, the best to his parents, Sirius, and the whole school. Regulus doesn't see him like that, he sees him like he is just another person. i think that makes james feel alive

(may be a hot take) but i think jegulus fics give lily a better characterization a lot of times. I see so much lily content that is just ber being seen as a mother to harry, a wife to james. (Thats what turned me off of jily in the beginning tbh) Lily is so much more than that. She is her own person. she has a personality. she is smart and works for herself, she doesn't need james to define her. she can define herself perfectly well. (almost all the fanart i see has lily with james, lily with hary, lily with both, why not just lily? why not lily without a romantic partner? why not lily with her friend? please send me lily fanart i love her)

I also headcanon lily as aroace or demiromantic asexual. (so james cant have her)

(i also think jegulily is super cool but at the same time i find it hard to picture reg with a girl, though i have read some amazing jegulily fics)

I know i have seen some people think that jegulus and jily are alike, but i think they're completely different.

And i don't think of jily as much of enemies to lovers-guy is obsessed with the girl to stalkery levels till she finally like him back way. I think of them in a way that James is some jock(probably a jerk) and is just allured by lily, this beautiful girl who is so kind and sweet.

I think they are both great dynamics, but they are different.

i tink Jegulus really depends on the person. when they join the fandom, how they view themself, and lots of other things.

hi, if it's not too much could you write the description of the main characters because i keep forgetting how they look and i can't find the exact paragraphs they were described 😭

No, sweetie, it's not too much to ask!

The reality is the current draft of Terrible, But Great does not have good descriptions of the main Slytherin boys, so it's not your fault at all. There are two reasons for this.

One, I didn't know them very well and created them out of necessity. They've really solidified their presence in the story since then.

And, two, I have aphantasia, which means I don't conjure images in my head at all. I know what an apple looks like, but I can't picture it in my head. So, I tend not to describe character appearances in enough detail because if I don't know them well enough, I can't vibe out what they look like.

I'm going through a comprehensive edit of Arc One and Arc Two to make up for this. There are a number of minor mistakes/inconsistencies that I want to fix. I've already updated chapter one with what I consider a final edit and am currently working on chapter two. I'll be adding better descriptions of the boys in the prose in my edits.

However, let me give you some of my resources that I've created and that my Archivist, Dede, has created. Dede created the outfit collages.

andromeda was born the middle of three daughters. it's a position that seemed to have more of an impact on her than she would care to admit. always caught in the middle, between her sisters, between her family, between right and wrong, between the 'truth' she was raised with and the knowledge that it was all lies told to malleable children who were too young and trusting in their parents to know the difference. however, being the middle child afforded her the gift of semi-invisibility and the time to explore herself through adolescence, her teen years, and after her time at school.

Barry Allen is a bisexual demiromantic and he has scars from the chemical burns he got after being struck by lighting. If they're going to pull the Savitar has a big facial scar to show he's the evil one then Barry gets scars too

Carry On by Rainbow Rowell (review/rec)

My rating: 9/10

I feel like Tumblr is well aware of these books already, but I figured it was a solid start as any.

Carry On and its subsequent books was such a pleasant surprise! Years ago, I had read Fangirl, another book by Rowell. And I loved it! I also recommend that one, but there are no LGBTQ+ characters or themes from what I remember. In it, the main character, Cath, was writing a fanfic from her favorite book series from childhood, Simon Snow. Simon Snow evidently involved a teenage boy named Simon whom attended wizarding school. Oddly, some sort of event or disaster would happen at this school every year, with Simon and his friends (but mostly Simon), being at the center of it. Simon would appear to be some sort of “chosen one”. Sound familiar?

Carry On, is the fanfic that Cath was working on. From Fangirl, we already knew that it followed Simon through his last year at wizarding school and that Cath possibly made the best enemies to lovers story known to the world of fanfiction. I actually avoided reading Carry On for a long time because I usually really hate Harry Potter fics. Not to mention that I thought it was going to be a lot like other spin-off books that end up just being boring. Eventually, out of desperation to find more queer stories, I caved, and I found out that my assumptions were absolutely wrong. It turns out that Cath really did write an excellent enemies to lovers story!

The characters are extremely relatable, and over the series we get to see how these characters develop from teenagers to young adults. I love that we also get to see how they react emotionally to the things that have happened to them as well. Unlike a lot of Chosen-One stories where the main trio can just take on challenge after challenge and make it out seemingly unfazed, it feels like Carry On pulls back the curtain on what these sorts of characters would actually be dealing with after facing huge, life-altering events. I’d like to say more here, but I’m afraid that I will spoil them!

The world of Simon Snow is also pretty hilarious. Every once in a while, Rowell will seemingly poke fun at Harry Potter’s plot holes or stupid rules. These books had me laughing when it didn’t have me in Deep Introspection Mode. What with its tongue-twisters of spells taken from nursery rhymes and the main villain being named “The Insidious Humdrum”. That being said, while Carry On perhaps has its roots in Harry Potter, it is a complete story in its own right. Instead of being about the up-and-coming Chosen One and the chaos that ensues, Carry On is more-so about how people can and do move on and grow after their world was turned upside-down. Most Chosen-One stories, and really most young adult fiction books, end with high school, and I can't tell you how much I appreciate the Rowell gave Simon and his friends a future beyond just high school. I love how she shows how at every age there are new challenges to face. Life goes on beyond high school!

Of course, I don’t want to forget the reason that these books have made it onto my blog! Where is the gay content!? The main characters, Simon and Baz fall in love, and it’s adorable. Simon doesn’t realize at first that he may be into men, so he has to have a bit of self-discovery there. Meanwhile, Baz thinks he’s pining for a straight boy who could never fall in love with his enemy and rival and hates vampires, like him. It’s like if Malfoy and Harry were to fall in love, except Malfoy actually has some redeeming qualities and proves that he’s quite nice. I feel like this comparison still doesn’t do Simon and Baz justice though. Rowell also shows the awkwardness between first loves and how it may not always be smooth sailing throughout the books. In addition, I have a headcanon that Penelope, another one of the main characters, may be somewhere on the demiromantic and/or demisexual spectrum.

If your in the mood for laughing, some crying (or both at once), discussions about change, and the feeling that you just want to reach into the books to give a hug to people that don’t exist I highly recommend the Simon Snow trilogy.

born at marine core base hawaii to commander wilson harris and leila harris, the middle child to the navy couple who often moved every few years as wilson's station rose. ever since ronan could remember, he was obsessed with fish of all shapes and sizes. ronan was often rewarded with books or trips to the aquarium where he would be mesmerized by how beautiful, curious, and whimsical the different types of fish were and the other aquatic friends who lived there. growing up, they moved to okinawa, italy, greece, and korea sticking with the other navy brats as they were quickly forced to learn enough to survive. this forced ronan from a young age to learn language and he was a polyglot by the time he was eight, having japanese, korean, and english conversationally under his belt. greek and italian came a little bit later. ronan hadn't identified his upbringing as traumatic but it sure was tough. there were expectations that just differed from some of the others being the son of a commander and he needed to be immaculate at all times, never embarrassing the unit. luckily for ronan, his elder siblings were pretty radical so it made him look that much more compliant. he tried his best not to make too many waves and focused on schooling, learning, and exploring culture wherever he went. the young boy grew into a teenager and was friendly enough, a bit on the quiet side as he preferred fish to people and loved to sit nestled into a book versus being out in the world. it was at sixteen that his father made it a personal choice to teach his son the value of exercise and lifting weights, something that helped stimulate ro's mind with clarity until this day. at eighteen, he would finally leave for the university of miami to study marine biology. ronan had an incredible four years learning and working with dolphins at the dolphin research center, where he really figured himself out wholly and did far too many things a sheltered boy should've learned during his youth but he was shameless and young. at twenty-two, he found himself tapped on the shoulder to move to alaska to study the reproductive habits of salmon and fishing migration with the university of alaska, where he focused on his research building a small community of others where he played board games with, dabbled in microdosing, participated in the crossfit games, marathoned, broken up with and lived an overall quiet but active life. he loved the quiet but always wished for something a bit more — well, life knocked hard.

OC Profile: Tabok Melor

Name: Ensign Tabok Melor

Species: Cardassian

Age: 23-24

Gender: Cisgender male

Sexuality: Demiromantic demisexual

Appearance: He’s about 5’10 in height and of relatively normal build for a Cardassian male, with broad shoulders and a long neck, if not on the slim side. His hair is black and neck-length, like most Cardassian males, however his is more messy and he usually wears his hair in a half ponytail. He has green eyes.

Backstory: Tabok was born to the Melor family on Cardassia Prime in 2367. His father, Gul Melor, was in the Cardassian military, while his mother, Ikiss, stayed at home with Tabok and his older brother, Naltak. In 2375, when Tabok was eight years old, the Dominion destroyed Cardassia Prime and tried to commit genocide against the Cardassians, leading to the deaths of Ikiss and Naltak and leaving Tabok all alone in the smoldering ruins, an event which I detail in my fic Red Hills and Bones.

Gul Melor is presumed dead for a few years, and Tabok lives in an orphanage. He befriends Molly O’Brien (in some of the post-canon novels the O’Briens live on Cardassia Prime for a while after the war), who introduces him to Federation ways of thinking and Chief O’Brien, who Tabok thinks is the coolest guy ever.

Somehow, Gul Melor returned Eventually, Gul Melor returns when Tabok was a teenager, and Tabok lives with him again. Gul Melor is extremely disappointed in the person Tabok has become and attempts to discipline him and turn him into a more classic Cardassian by giving him a strict physical and mental regime, much to Tabok’s displeasure. However, he maintains contact with Molly and the O’Briens, who try to help Tabok the best they can but Tabok begs them not to confront his father out of fear of strict punishment.

When he’s old enough, Tabok applies to Starfleet Academy in order to escape his father, with Chief O’Brien as his sponsor. He gets in, becoming the first ever Cardassian to join Starfleet. At the Academy, he meets Milrune Marshall and they quickly hit it off. They graduate together in 2389 and are assigned the same ship, the USS Indianapolis, led by Captain Harry Kim.

Personality: Tabok is kind, intelligent, and curious, described as a “sensitive soul” back on Cardassia Prime. He also is rather shy and keeps to himself, especially around people he doesn’t know that well, due to him recognizing others’ feelings towards his species and not wanting to make others feel uncomfortable around him. Once he opens up to you, though, he is a very loyal and caring friend who would do anything for you. He has lots of underlying trauma from his past and fear of getting kicked out of Starfleet and sent back to Cardassia, but he hides it, and he can hide it until it all comes bursting out in the form of a panic attack (and he hides these panic attacks well. Not even Milrune knows about them.)

How many works do you have on AO3? 42 as of now, which is wild considering a year ago I had like. 10 and didn't think I was going to start any new ones! I was purely a longfic writer back then and now I've really branched out.

What's your total A03 word count? 1,035,021 words hehehe

What fandoms do you write for? Well right now I almost entirely just write MCU fic (particularly Parkner) and also HP foefic, but I've also written quite a bit for Naruto, BNHA, Bleach and KHR!

What are your top 5 fics by kudos? What it Takes (Naruto) - AU in which Naruto grows up knowing what it takes to achieve his goals and being a fair bit more competent as a result. Still an ADHD gremlin, also genderfluid in this one. Feat. Naruto And The Boys polycule including queerplatonic Naruto/trans guy Hinata and romantic NaruSasu

Shared Power (BNHA) - fic in which Midoriya unlocked Blackwhip instead of super strength at the entrance exam, and progresses through unlocking the stored quirks of OFA. Feat. t4t gay tododeku with demisexual demiromantic Midoriya

Daisy Evans, the Girl Who Stood True (Harry Potter) - trans girl potter gets taken in by the Tonks family after finding her way to a trans Meetup when Hagrid first brings her to Diagon alley. Intending to write all 7 books, currently almost finished book 2. Feat. t4t Daisy/Ginny and also me having lots of fun with autistic good!ravenclaw!Draco getting character development and a safe environment (eventually, and he doesn't start out good or in ravenclaw)

Scrapyard Tinkering and Bisexual Awakenings (MCU/Parkner) - a fic idea I wrote out on a whim and then kept writing, in which a 14yo Peter fresh back from Germany encounters new transfer student at Midtown, Harley Keener, and has a bisexual awakening there and then. Very soft and fluffy! I have plans to one day write some more in that fic setting, and ideally write a sequel fic that features a prom for queer teens in new York that gets interrupted by an alien invasion. In which I will write my very own rarepair I thought of, Ned Leeds/Kurt Wagner!

Tales of a Scientific Ninja (Naruto) - my probably abandoned very first ever fic I wrote. In theory I would like to finish writing it because I have the whole plot roughly outlined for what is now a 150k word fic and could be a 300-400k word fic but I just don't know if I'll have the inspiration or time. Isekai OC becomes Naruto's twin and houses the other half of Kurama. By the power of autism, develops a special interest in fuinjutsu and achieves mastery at a 'young age' (in reality they retained their cognitive maturity from their past life and accordingly had a head start)

Do you respond to comments? Why or why not? Yes! When I have the spoons I try to respond to as many comments as I can. I really appreciate comments because I love engagement with my readers <3

What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? Other than my oneshots and scrapyard I have literally not finished a fic ever but none of them have an angsty ending. I would say that maybe Tales of a Scientific Ninja would have an angsty-ish ending if I finish it, largely because it'll end after a literal war and there are gonna be deaths.

What is the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Lol all of my fics I love happy endings way too much. If I had to decide out of all my fics I've finished I would have to say maybe one day i can forget the past and be one of those girls of honey and glass (MCU/Parkner) because Harley and Seraphina get to be so so happy!! Especially Seraphina in her transition progress <3

Do you get hate on fics? I used to get a bunch back when I posted on FFN and I have gotten one memorable piece of hate on AO3 when someone was very upset that I gave Sakura a different story path than they wanted in What It Takes, but otherwise nah. I do sometimes get people posting comments that cross my boundaries but I usually respond by explaining my boundaries and then deleting if need be.

Do you write smut? Kind of? I have a couple works in progress that didn't get very far and I do plan to complete both of them at some point. Not sure when though.

Do you write crossovers? Wjdueudhdhsidushd welllll kind of? I have this one crossover fic that I fully planned but never actually got very far in writing. It's called The Heroes' Aid and it's set in the Naruto world. The four main characters are from HxH, Bleach, Fire Emblem Three Houses and KHR. They're all isekai'd into the Naruto world by the sage of six paths, to help Minato and kushina during the second and third wars.

Have you ever co-written a fic before? I haven't, and I'm maybe open to trying it but it does sound kind of stressful.

What's your all-time favorite ship to write for? Parkner my absolute beloved!!! I quite like tododeku too but Parkner, especially my post NWH Parkner fic set at MIT, is just aaaaaaaaa

What's A WIP that you want to finish, but doubt you ever will? Lol so many. What it Takes and Margin of Error are probably the main two though

What are your writing strengths? I can really get going with my writing speed and hit word per minute scores of about 30-50 on sprints, and thusly write over 5k words in a day on my good days! Once I have my idea I kind of just run with it and see what happens and pump out a lot of content.

What are your writing weaknesses? I tend to struggle with painting visuals with my writing; character outfits, scene descriptions and such. It's often something I have to remember to remind myself to do.

Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic? Yeah! It's definitely something I want to be able to do, but I also don't want to botch languages. I may just specify that the speech is in another language without writing it in that language directly, but it'll really depend.

First fandom you wrote for? Naruto! I mostly got into fanfic reading naruto canon rewrites and SI-OC fics on FFN, and then I found the light and started reading more stuff on ao3 and branching out in fandoms. But my first fic was a... well, not SI, but an OC insert naruto fic. I'm quite attached to it even if I may have to abandon it
