Believe it or not, it is The Fall of Delta Green (2018) that finally got me to pay attention to Delta Green at large. Something about this cover art struck me as enticing, perhaps in the manner of a train wreck — Call of Cthulhu meets Vietnam? How are they going to pull that off?

Well, for starters, Fall isn’t Call of Cthulhu, it’s a standalone Gumshoe game (though it is compatible with both Trail of Cthulhu and Night’s Black Agents). I’m not super interested in the system, honestly, but I absolutely love the source material laid out here (and it is usable, really, with your Cthulhu game of choice). It was the operational history of Delta Green as presented here that hooked me on the larger Delta Green universe; the broad strokes of that are the same as in both the Pagan and Arc Dream DGs. What’s unique here is the particular focus on the ’60s, an era of dirty politics, dirty wars, massive social upheavals, drugs and all sorts of tomfoolery on the fringes of the counter-culture. As with the ’90s and our current era, the ’60s seem particularly rich backdrop suited to bringing out the themes of DG.

It’s also a rich moment in DG’s history. The titular fall — the unsuccessful dismantling of the program — is triggered by an unauthorized operation in Vietnam and Cambodia gone horribly wrong in late 1969, early 1970. That episode is kept vague in all histories of Delta Green, but here it takes on a vivid horror — Col. Wade Satchel is sort of a Delta Green version of Col. Walter Kurtz from Apocalypse Now. He traffics with dangerous forces and gets a lot of people killed before being assassinated by survivors of one of his doomed off-the-books operations. Marrying that film with the Cthulhu mythos makes for some truly unpleasant dreams!

Here, I'll combine these two into one post for less tagging (and because I dont like the ice skaking one enough for its own post)

On the left, I have my Strawberry Felon Sixer, Bill, and 17 meeting Dee, Liam, and Ron from @aeli-tan-art edit: Also tagging @overlords-au as they just added that sideblog today! (My hyperfixation is well fed)

17 isn't with the same Time Police that's constantly after the Triumvirate, so Dee isn't as worried leaving them alone to glare at each other. 17 is n o t a fan of McGuckets, especially those who have practice in cybernetic enhancements / replacements, and Ron only hasn't killed 17 yet because Dee wants to study them first.

I honestly don't know if they'd be a pretty even fight or not? Especially since 17 would go all out, where Sixer would probably be trying to keep Ron alive / just get him out of the way if they were fighting for some reason. I think Ron's shield would be the determining factor, but if 17 got a hand on where the shield generated from, he'd be able to deactivate it / cause some damage to it. He'd have to get close enough to do that though, and even with the C.I.P.H.E.R program looking through time for him, I don't honestly know how it would end.

Good thing 17 listens to Sixer and (probably) won't start a fight anytime soon!

Sixer and Dee are excitedly sharing and comparing their Bill and Liam. Bill is probably still younger than Liam (he is younger than most Bills) but since he has more power than the iridescent hognose, I bet he'd try and offer him a deal to lend him his power so they could have some fun together.

I think Bill would be impressed by Liam's human form as well, though aren't we all? And find some kinship in him being a bit of a broken Bill as well.

The second image is of Dee and Ron on their honeymoon ice skating! I'm pretty positive they had different looks back then, but I just went with their current designs since we for sure haven't seen what Dee looked like. I remember Eli mentioned Ron was surprisingly bad at ice skating, and it probably didnt helpt they were drinking haha.

Don't mind that I forgot Dee's undercut, let's just pretend Ron hadn't had the chance to maintain it for him yet since theyre newlyweds. Not as happy with that one because... how draw planet? Space?

🐌 What is one of your smallest writing goals?

I love this question. It's really interesting to think about small goals! I've got a couple of fics that I could finish just by adding one scene, I just have to go back and put it in. I would like to do that.

ALWAYS. Haha. There are so many things I could share here. In terms of fanfic, I'm excited to finish the next Murakami Madeline story. It's planned out and I've been picking slowly away at it, but it's unfortunately pretty long, so it's taking some doing.

As for a snippet... here's this bit from Chapter 4 of Where The Heart Is, I think. It's Kakuzu and Maddie bonding over baby's first murder.

"...I don't run away from everything," [Maddie] mumbled, although, really, she kind of did. More than Kakuzu even knew, actually: she'd run away and hidden from everyone in her last life, too.

"You do," he contradicted her flatly. "Your instinct for self preservation is strong. And you have," he turned the body over to inspect the skull and just stuck his finger right into the spot where she'd stabbed it, "no interest in killing. You don't even like to watch."

"I'm not scared of killing." She hadn't known it until yesterday, but she really wasn't. [Character name redacted] had been a loser who knew he was a loser and got his rocks off intimidating women so he could feel less like a loser.

"Scared? Murder isn't scary." Kakuzu prodded the body, as if testing the integrity of its skin. "But it's unsightly."

And wasn't that the most accurate description of the process Maddie'd ever heard? It was not scary. It was not even really upsetting, provided you had the stomach for it. But it was uncomfortable and kinda gross.

"So?" he prompted.

Man, Kakuzu was like one of those heavy-jawed dogs you had to choke out to detach from your arm. Single minded, determined, intractable. Woof.

She pulled a face. "It was stupid. And, like, I knew it was stupid when I did it. I could have gotten myself killed. But I just... lost my temper."

Abruptly, Kakuzu looked up from the corpse.

It was deeply uncomfortable to be the sole recipient of Kakuzu's focused attention. He watched her, hard-eyed, face unreadable. He waited for her to explain.

She chewed her lip. "I guess, in that moment, I felt like it was ...worth it, as long as I got to hurt him."

Kakuzu watched her for another long, still second, and then he sighed. It was a deep and bizarrely human noise, drawn from deep in his chest.

"Your temper." Maddie could really see him hesitate. Then he said, "Yes. I see." Another pause. "...I do see."
