Happy Deaf History month!!!  (April)

There are a few important hallmark dates celebrated every year by Deaf communities in April.

National ASL Day

Celebrated on April 15, the day in history when American School for the Deaf was founded in Hartford, Connecticut in 1817.

Here are some great presenters briefly explaining different aspects of ASL. (with closed captions for non-signers)

Deaf LGBTQ+ week

Celebrated in the second and third weeks of April, usually alternating dates, with many events and celebrations to highlight the rich heritage of Deaf queer people everywhere. (has closed captions for non-signers)

Also, April 8 is noted, as it is the day in 1864 when Gallaudet University, the only university in the world specifically for deaf and hard-of-hearing students, was chartered.

Lastly, I should say that even though this is not (NOT) a post for sharing resources to learn ASL, I did want to add one final part which specifically relates to Deaf culture, & how to interact respectfully with deaf and hard-of-hearing people. It’s by Chrissy from The Essential Sign:

my last time speaking on this bc I’m back to my smut and stupid shit afterwards (cause yk this is my safe space 🤪😜🫶🏾👍🏾) , but I’m genuinely scared, not just for this presidency but my local leadership too. Hence why I always make such an emphasis on it. I live in a small town and it’s very much class/racially divided. The sheriff (a white woman btw but a woman nonetheless) has been actively trying to harass and run everyone from my side of town. She pretty much wrote off this area as a bunch of drug addicts and says ‘she hopes we all just kill each other’. (My family has never done, sold or even been around drugs and yet her dumbass cops are convinced bc we’re black with nice vehicles, that we must sell). She’s also pushing for the gentrification of our area so all of her rich cohorts can come and tear down our houses and build a suburbia. Just the other day, a cop made me move my vehicle from in front of a store I park at all the time bc im disabled and even the closest parking spot is far on this leg and he did it just to be an asshole. I can’t even cry abt this presidency yet bc I’m now worried that my local leaders are going to make our lives hell. Not to mention, they voted no on abortions and gender affirming care as well. I hate it here so fucking bad.

The intersection of queer and Deaf identity in I Hear the Sunspot

Content Warning: Discussion of ableism.

As a long-time reader of manga, I always found the medium to be a means of escape to fantastical worlds. Yet, there remained a disconnect between me and the stories I was reading. Discovering I Hear the Sunspot filled that absence with its portrayal of the specific reality of being both gay and Deaf.

The series follows Sugihara Kohei, a college student with deteriorating hearing, and Sagawa Taichi, a sociable peer seeking income and consistent meals. As Kohei and Taichi’s relationship develops after Taichi agrees to take notes for Kohei in exchange for meals, a narrative of identity exploration in a society that denies one’s legitimacy unfolds.

I Hear the Sunspot does not shy away from Kohei and Taich’s budding romance nor does it ignore the painful experiences of seeking connection in a hearing world that does not understand or accommodate Deaf individuals.

If you had to write your own X-men story line, what would it be? Who would it feature?

Hello fellow mutants!

I've created 5 connecting plot lines for 5 x-men characters in my AU (the dieverse) through my vision that you can get a glimpse of below. The order I have so far is:

Book 1: Quicksilver

(the story of a trans boy and his sister living in containment, breaking himself to become the soldier they want him to be while questioning what it is his father wants him to be)

Book 2: Scarlet Witch

(the story of a child learning to control her incredible abilities, while discovering just what exactly the people who experimented on her and her brother were really up to)

Book 3: Nightcrawler

(the story of a young boy in a circus, questioning why exactly God would make him this way, this image, this love, and learning to accept himself for everything he is, and was)

Book 4: Angel

(the story of a boy, who's always been told to be good, to be seen, not heard, finally snapping, and becoming someone he never thought he could be, with the help of someone who's supposed to be his enemy)

Book 5: Rogue

(the story of a girl and her mother, and finding exactly what happens when she's forced to push her powers, and mental limits, to the edge)

so far I have their main plot points and concept maps, and I have a script completely written for quicksilver. I'm working on making it a book that I will publish on ao3 first, then hopefully I will be able to convert it into a comic of some sort.

My request is : Let me know if you have any characters you want to see that haven't really had time to shine. I plan on exploring a lot more niche characters in future books hopefully, such as Magik's backstory in connection to Colossus's, Lorna's connection to Pietro and Wanda, and etc (I really love the interconnection of character's and MAKING connections between characters, hehe) but PLEASE let me know your thoughts.

LGBTQ+ Sign Language

Hey y'all, I was wondering if anyone has resources on LGBTQ+ vocabulary in sign languages? Other than American Sign Language (ASL), I haven't been able to find much.
