hey do you want to see something COOL?
this is ludwig (bbc). this is deaf actress and strictly winner 2021 rose ayling-ellis. this is a deaf character BEING GIVEN AN INTERPRETER RATHER THAN BEING EXPECTED TO LIPREAD IN A PROFESSIONAL SETTING!!!! i particularly love the part at the end where she looks to the interpreter before answering the question - the name has to be spelled for her to know who he’s talking about. rose uses interpreters in real life, and it’s so cool to see a character she plays use one on tv!!!

Are there accents in sign language? Like, within ASL or BSL, can you spot which deaf community an individual is from based on how far they tilt their hands in a movement, or some other seemingly subtle (or maybe big?) differences? Do families sign exactly the same way, in the same way hearing families often have extremely similar voices?
I imagine there's lots of ways to convey certain tones? I'm picturing maybe positioning your hands a certain way to convey that something you're signing is sarcastic, the same way hearing people change tone.
Do different generations have different slang? Like, do millennials and gen z have totally different ways of saying the same thing? Do deaf millennials have some equivalent of "doggo" which deaf gen z's roll their eyes at?
Do people create new signs all the time the same way slang in the hearing world is constantly evolving?
I'm really sorry if these questions are ignorant as hell.
I'm so intrigued and excited to learn more about a world I know very little about. I feel like there will be so many layers and intricacies I'm totally unaware of.
Please forgive any ignorance I'm showing 🌻

Why do 🏴‍☠️ movie streaming sites have better captions than paid sites like netflix, where captions often aren’t even available!! DO BETTER! They are a type of hearing aid for disabled!

Saturday, September 23.
International Day of Sign Languages.
It is Saturday, September 23, but it is no mere Saturday, September 23. It is International Day of Sign Languages, no less. This one is for the deaf community, the hard of hearing the mute, the semi-speaking, the hearing impaired. For all those, in fact, under this wide and vibrant umbrella, we wish you a very happy IDSL, today and every day.
The day's commemoration, in a nutshell, via the United Nations:
The International Day of Sign Languages is a unique opportunity to support and protect the linguistic identity and cultural diversity of all deaf people and other sign language users. During the 2023 celebration of the International Day of Sign Languages, the world will once again highlight the unity generated by our sign languages. Deaf communities, governments, and civil society organizations maintain their collective efforts - hand in hand - in fostering, promoting, and recognizing national sign languages as part of their countries’ vibrant and diverse linguistic landscapes.
Wishing you a happy celebration folks across Tumblr's rich and talented sign language community. Thank you, folks, and enjoy the weekend.

When I did this song. The rapper Dax through me under the rug and then dusted an hearie who signed everything wrong. Of course ppl in deaf community stood up for me about this but Dax ignored all of us. The thing is. I can’t hear the music. It takes me a lot of work to do something like this. As a deaf artist I don’t let anything stop me. But this right here knowing how much work I put in. I don’t want to sign music anymore. That’s how I felt. But I will I just won’t sign his songs anymore. Hearies some of them don’t appreciate what deafies go through to show our beautiful language. I’m not only deaf. I’m disabled with chronic illness. Ppl learn to listen to any marginalized group when we tell u something. Show respect and educate yourself

Rewatching FMA and this line struck like a bolt out of the blue.
"So, without anyone ever asking my opinion..."
I was born deaf and I was implanted with cochlear implants when I was turning 4. I've thought a lot about it and I guess it's only one among many decisions that your parents make on your behalf. It's just more visible than most decisions, choosing whether you hear or not.
Shortly after I was born (a few years), it grew to be widely recognized and eventually enacted as a standard in most US hospitals for newly born infants to undergo newborn hearing screening to see if they might have hearing issues. My parents and I didn't have that program though and it took a few years to really figure out what was up.
Anyway, I'm thankful for the choice but it's also not for everyone. I think if you're ever faced with the choice, it's important to consider what kind of world your kid is in.

Things I love about being Deaf
The community! I've met so many lovely people in the Deaf community, and I can't express how important it was for me to meet other deaf individuals
The language. I am learning BSL, and it is something that I would reccomend to anyone, not just deaf people. Have you ever needed to communicate across a noisy room? It's so helpful and it blows my mind that sign language isn't usually taught in schools
My hearing aids. I am lucky enough to live in a country where hearing aids are free, and I know that a lot of people do not have access to them like I do. That said, it warms my heart to see people with hearing aid accessories, brightly coloured aids, etc. Mine are bright blue, and I love showing them off!
The ability to mute people. Noisy environment? People being unkind? Switch the hearing aids off and BAM! No sound, no problem.
I am now legally required to say DEAFinitely instead of definitely for the rest of my life.

thoughts on captioning as a HoH person:
youtube - hit or miss. a lot of videos don't have their own captions or transcript. usually auto caption gets 90% of words right but thats still more wrong words than you might think, and some videos are not able to be captioned due to age. also some people think it's funny to do joke captions for some fucking dumbass reason
tiktok - look i have mixed feelings on tiktok but at least the up-and-coming generations encouraged people to make the platform relatively accessible. kinda ruined it when they introduced auto caption though because I've noticed a lot of people rely on the automation instead of their own script?? so stuff falls through the cracks and it feels like meaning and sometimes context gets lost
cable television - usually does pretty ok if it's a scheduled program, but live events specifically suck ass and will be a full 2-3 minutes behind in my experience
The Merchant of Venice (2004) on specifically the plain DVD version - ASS FUCKING ASS THEY ONLY HAD FRENCH IM STILL FUCKING MAD ABOUT IT I HAD TO TRY TO READ FRENCH THE ENTIRE MOVIE NIGHT AT AGE 16 AND I COULD ONLY PIECE IT TOGETHER VAGUELY. i literally never fucking finished that movie because i got so mad
pretty much every other movie on DVD - 9.9/10 times they would be spot fucking on i remember being so excited when on some movies there were TWO kinds of captions where one was more descriptive depending on your needs..... effervescent ....
netflix - these guys have been on my bad side ever since they literally did not have captions until someone sued them over it. like what the fuck why do u not care abt d/Deaf people

I'm a deaf animator! and I made Ice Cubes, this film about a migraine over the course of a semester in college! But if a slice of life with deaf signing animal people isn't your jam, how about Finger Brew??? Where a bird and human fight over how to make their soup :)
Both films have ASL in them because there's far too little media out there without my lovely native language and culture in them and I am determined to fill that niche.

Deaf SFX
We’re collectively hard of hearing. Our body’s ears are physically incapable of perceiving certain frequencies and volumes. Beyond that, the amount each of us can hear depends on our individual life experiences. Hearing loss, yes, but also Deaf gain as we continue to learn ASL and rely on our internal gestured dialect.
One of the things I can’t hear is thunder. I’m pretty sure at least some of us can when it’s close, but I can only really feel it. However, the lightning attracts my attention because I’m used to our phone ringing with light. Regardless of how near or far the storm is, I always ‘hear’ the thunder in time with the lightning.
We have at least one alter who inserts their best imitation of a sound. This isn’t literally their speaking voice projected, but more a simulation based on a memory or concept. For example, I always ‘hear’ the fan if I’m expecting it to be on, regardless of whether it actually is. Some of these projected (not quite hallucination, but getting there) ‘sounds’ can be likened to sound effects in movies; they’re not the sound this object should make, but the sound we imagine it should make. A dragon screech might be a balloon rubbed, and falling hamburgers might be wet rags on wood.
We also do this for people audibly talking to us — we run a script and fill in the blanks, and we can’t respond without the script being accurate.
I’d like to know if any other Deaf (including HOH) collectives have similar effects, be it for one headmate or everyone. Same for Deaf singlets, honestly. Do y’all have brain SFX?
