Still watching "The Phantom Menace" and I forgot how Obi-Wan Kenobi gets almost... no character development or much personal focus before the very end of the movie?

There is a LOT that's not working with this movie but I think that one of the most egregious issues in the final battle is the editing. The focus is split way too wide and it's CONSTANTLY cutting between four different locations: 1) Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan versus Darth Maul, 2) Padmé and her companions retaking the palace, 3) the gungan army versus the droids (very CGI heavy and does not look good now), and 4) Anakin and R2-D2 fighting the Trade Federation in space. And the tonal shift between all of these is WILD.

Jar-Jar Binks is fighting a war, his people are dying around him, but the whole thing is treated like a physical comedy sequence. Anakin is having a Fun Childhood Adventure where he says things like "Yippee!" and is never convincingly in danger. Padmé is fighting her way down a bunch of corridors against random droids with a bunch of nameless, underdeveloped characters, and it is frankly boring as hell with no emotional depth. And then Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon are fighting a SITH!!!

"Duel of the Fates" is going on at full blast! This is our opportunity to show off Maul as an antagonist! (He says like ten words in this whole movie? He seems weirdly... calm and collected, honestly, through most of it.) This sequence should show off the skills of our protagonists! The bond between Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon! This is a fight that is going to end with Qui-Gon's tragic death and Obi-Wan's furiously resolved ascension to knighthood. But instead of letting this tense and exciting battle take up space and let any moments within it breathe, to let us fall into it completely, the movie!!! Keeps!!! Cutting away!!! For Jar-Jar Binks' comedy skits and Anakin's Funtime Adventure and Padmé shooting more cannon fodder droids in random hallways.
