I have so many thoughts on Ollie's arc and I'm going to seize the chance to express them. He became a major comfort character for me really quickly and it kind of broke my heart to learn that I'm one of like, five people on Power Rangers Tumblr who likes him. Anyway, my ramblings are below the cut:

Ollie Akana has been the perpetual new kid all his life, bouncing around the world with his archaeologist mom. He's had a happy life with a loving mother and he can indulge his passion for learning, but his social skills leave a lot to be desired. He's never been able to form lasting connections with anybody his own age, so he does what a lot of kids in this situation do; he latches onto the authority figures. People who represent everything he wants to be: steady, confident, and knowledgeable. In time, he began to miss the forest for the trees, and he started to arrogantly believe that he was better, smarter than the other kids who were more adept at socializing. What need does he have for lasting friendships? He's just going to leave for another country in a few months when Dr. Akana's work calls them somewhere else. He's got a mom who loves him deeply and a whole world to explore and learn from, and as far as he's concerned, that will be all he needs. Until Pine Ridge, a trigger-happy ghost hunter, and three seasons of television for character growth.

As an overall good guy with bad social skills and a serious problem of pride, he's basically the Power Ranger version of Fitzwilliam Darcy from Pride and Prejudice. And Amelia Jones is his Lizzie Bennet: she's turned off by his behavior, doesn't put up with the lines he crosses, and in time he realizes that she's right. He puts in the work to be a better person, and eventually proves himself worthy of this spitfire woman. Ollie learning humility, opening up to new ideas and perspectives, and getting better at gauging the wants and needs of others all resonated strongly with my autistic self.

And then Zedd enters his life.

Zedd's first appearance is in "Old Foes", an episode that starts with an exploration of Ollie's view on life. His brash know-it-all streak clashes with his friends' Halloween fun when he tries to out-logic all the scary things they talk about. That's something I can relate to: if I can figure out what [insert frightening thing here] is and how it works, then I have power over it and it can't scare me anymore. A new monster of the week with a goofy radiator mask? Just snark at it, morph, kick its ass, and save the day. Solon has to save him from his own recklessness, and after learning the full extent of what Zedd represents, Ollie is humbled. Backed into a corner, Ollie makes a very unwise choice. He breaks the compliance collar on Zedd, wagering that the resurrected warmonger be more angry at the monster that put him under mind control, buying Ollie the time he needs to rescue his friends. It works for the short term, but it also means that Ollie is indirectly responsible for sending one of the most dangerous Ranger villains of all time back into the fray. This comes back to bite him hard in season two and especially in Cosmic Fury.

When Zedd returns to Earth in "Love Hate", he targets Ollie for a brainwashing scheme, specifically to punish him for the "Radiator Face" jab. "Ranger gets brainwashed" is a really common recurring plot for this show. It happens at least once nearly every season, so the audience has been trained not to expect much of it. What matters is 1.) Ollie and Amelia's will they/won't they screwball comedy is resolved, and 2.) Ollie now has insider information about Zedd's plan, and the season's storyline moves on to its next major beat: the rediscovery of Rafkon. But Zedd being Zedd, he's still hung up on Ollie's insult and has to punish Ollie again to soothe his own ego in episode one of Cosmic Fury.

Part of what makes the Bitter Blue storyline feel so different from other Evil Ranger arcs is that the audience, writers, and the actor have had two seasons of television to get to know Ollie, and they have a clearer idea of what "Ollie but evil" would be like. Usually, Evil Rangers are blank slates. The team usually doesn't have any connection with them until the dramatic identity reveal, and it usually isn't someone that they already know very well. The Mighty Morphin' team met Tommy roughly an hour before Rita decided to screw up his life. Long-lost siblings like Andros and Karone or Dana and Ryan have lived very different lives and are basically strangers to each other now. The Evil Ranger the audience knew best before his fall into villainy is probably Trent from Dino Thunder, and even then, "Trent" and "White Ranger" are functionally two different characters in a Jekyll/Hyde relationship. There's nothing to be found of the sweet and shy artist in the relentless agent of destruction he turns into when he morphs, unless you count using the sword as a pen to draw up laser arrows. With Ollie, the "mysterious new enemy" trope is not in play at all. Zedd wants the team to know that their friend belongs to him now. Honestly, I'm surprised Zedd didn't put a radiator on Ollie's new faceplate like he did with this season's foot soldiers, just to rub more salt in the wound.

The fundamental tragedy of Ollie's situation in Cosmic Fury is that his character growth has been stolen from him. Zedd chose Ollie to be his attack dog for suitably petty reasons, but Ollie already has the sort of character flaws that work perfectly for a trainee supervillain. He's prideful, ambitious, has trouble working collaboratively, and it sure is convenient for Zedd that out of the Dino Fury team, Ollie's the one most qualified to help build a machine to turn Zedd into a capital-G God. It's the quintessential narcissistic parent situation: "I don't love you, but I love what I see of myself in you. You, being the child (or in this case, mind control victim), don't know the difference and will accept this as normal". Ollie is back to being the self-important and isolated teacher's pet. He knows he won't be making friends (especially when it's made clear that the spell on him is power of love-proof), so he'll strive to impress the steady authority figure.

As you've already discussed, parent/child relationships are a core theme in Dino and Cosmic Fury. Obviously, Amelia's parents are the main villains, and the power of love redeems them when they finally recognize each other. While it wasn't planned (Santaura's actress, Siobhan Marshall, was pregnant during filming and they decided to write it in), it's really fitting that their redemption and happy ending sees them welcoming a new baby: their symbolic rebirth goes hand in hand with a literal birth. Javi has the classic "I want my dad to understand/be proud of me" character trajectory we've seen with Justin, Ryan, Wes, Trent, Mack, RJ, Scott, Lauren, Preston, Devon, and several others that aren't at the top of my head. In "Stitched Up", Izzy is implied to have gone through something similar with her mom, having been recruited to be her "little model" as a kid before her mom came around to her daughter's more butch sensibilities and affirmed that she loved her no matter what. Zayto's flashback to his mom's words of wisdom are the bedrock of his character. And we can't forget Solon - one of the best Ranger mentors in years, a cyborg dinosaur with the personality of a loving grandmother. Even our first guest character, Mick Kanic, is tied in with the parenthood theme, seeing how he looked after Brody during the decade he spent as Space Cinderella on the set of Galaxy Warriors.

So it's very relevant that it's Lani Akana who figures out how the brainwashing works and gives the Rangers the piece of information they need to restore Ollie. Once the Blue Ranger goes away, Ollie Akana comes home. The bad dad figure is overcome through the insight of one of the show's all-time best mothers (plus a few lawyer jokes, because it wouldn't be Power Rangers without a hearty helping of wacky nonsense).

Zedd's evil mentorship of Ollie gets a really smart payoff in the finale. In "Love Hate", the restored Ollie can provide the team with insider information about Zedd's plan; this time, Ollie gives the insight to Zedd himself. From his time as Zedd's general/house pet/pupil, Ollie understands how Zedd sees the world, and is able to get across Zayto's ultimatum in a way that Zedd will -- reluctantly -- agree to.

Frankly, I think it was brilliant to leave Zedd on Nibyro, the "psychological horror for kids" planet. By basically every metric, Zedd should consider this a happy ending. His enemies (including a Morphin' Master!) lay dead at his feet, he rules as emperor of all he sees, and he's even been reunited with the one true love of his life. But in his flayed brain, that isn't enough, and he's going to torment himself by bickering with the Rita Repulsa illusion. Still, the Nibyro spirit asserts that it releases people who have good hearts. It helped Zayto and Aiyon when they made peace with their 65 million year old feelings of survivor's guilt, and it suggests that if Zedd can have a similar moment of growth where he genuinely connects with Rita, the power of love may be the key to his redemption.

One last side note: if Ollie and Amelia are Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet, does that make Zedd and Rita the counterparts to Mr. Wickham and Lydia? Like Wickham, Zedd is the villain who serves as the obstacle for the formation of the couple, uses psychological manipulation to get what he wants (real-world emotional blackmail or mysterious blue goo that turns people evil), and his ultimate punishment is marriage to a shrill, immature woman-child.

I rewatched Cosmic Fury recently and something dawned on me: I don't think Zedd knows Ollie's name. He only ever calls him "child", "boy", or "BOOOOOY". Some of the other villains address him by name, but never Zedd.

hey anon! you've stumbled onto some head canons I've held in for a while! just a disclaimer 🙈

I think there is something so cool behind that dialogue choice because it happened so frequently and consistently that we can definitely draw some character intentions from it. This provides such a fun contrast between Zedd and Zordon as mentors to a human ranger team.

Zordon will always catch flack from me for creating a team of child soldiers 😂 but in narrative, he's shown to be a very caring father-figure. He imparts wisdom and concern for his team. Between him and Alpha, there's a functional nuclear family. Whereas Zedd is running a dysfunctional content house with this new adoptive son he doesn't know what to do with.

It's a toss up whether Zedd genuinely did not know Ollie's name, despite knowing his other lackeys and henchmen, or whether he called Ollie by diminutive names intentionally. Heck, even Rita knew the name of the evil ranger she created. Either way, it could speak towards a power play. It's Zedd's way to impose a power hierarchy between them even though he actually treated Ollie really well.

We also know that throughout the seasons, Ollie is mostly raised by single mother/amazing genius, Lani Akana. Lord Zedd fills this spot for a father figure in Ollie's life and even though he was brainwashed to be evil, we still saw Ollie vying for Zedd's approval and trying so hard to make him proud. Even when Ollie failed, Zedd says he sees potential in Ollie and encourages him to embrace his inner darkness. All of that dynamic rounds out at the end where good!Ollie makes his plea with Zedd to not release the Zedd Wave and Zedd eventually concedes.

(Also that scene where Ollie provides Zedd with Zayto's location. Zedd tells Scrozzle to "give the boy his present" like okay Zedd you definitely prepared that WELL beforehand. He is 100% someone who shoves gifts at their child as a form of parenting.)

It was just incredibly fun to see despite only catching glimpses of their dynamic.

Claire watches Asian Dramas - Korean Fox edition

Goblin -the Lonely and Great God (2017)

Fantasy romance drama, with a great cast! 16 episodes at about 70 minutes each, plus 3 making-of specials. The story focuses on the Goblin, cursed with immortality until he meets a prophesied “Goblin Bride” who can remove the sword from his chest and release him from his torment. The secondary storyline about the Reaper (and his great hat), Sunny, and supporting character of a spoiled chaebol heir who does errands for his immortal employers, weaves together with the main storyline very well. I watched this one on Viki.com

(Confession, it’s been awhile since I’ve watched it, so these are my lasting impressions rather than specific call-outs)

Pros:

Strong cast, everyone has a dramatic moment to shine

The scenes between odd-couple roommates Goblin and Reaper are comedy GOLD

Beautiful set pieces for the Goblin’s house and Reaper’s tea room/afterlife lobby

Love the mythology around the reapers and the afterlife transitions

Fun ghost characters!

Has a happy ending for all the couples if you don’t mind a time jump!

Cons:

I couldn’t get past the age difference of the main leads. I’m not a fan of the grown-man looking character having a relationship with a highschool-age looking character. Not my bag.

The “villain” is a cartoon baddie. And not that interesting, ultimately.

Edited to add: the product placement in this one is extremely silly. Just FYI.

Tale of the Nine Tailed (2020) 구미호뎐

My new favorite Korean drama! Lee Dong Wook was so good in Goblin, I looked up what else he was in and found this fantasy romance drama, where he has the lead role as a 1000+ year old Nine Tailed Fox (gumiho) who serves as a kind of bounty hunter, capturing other immortals who break the rules, while looking for his reincarnated love. 16 episodes, about 70 minutes each, plus a making-of special. (Watched this one on Viki.com as well - I actually bought a subscription so I could watch it, after they hooked me with the first three episodes!)

Pros:

The female lead is awesome and competent! She is my favorite non-powered heroine from any of these shows so far, I think.

Lee Dong Wook. What else do I need to say?

Great Found-Family ensemble cast.

Actually, all the supporting characters are fantastic. There’s a Bear character (immortal spirit, like the foxes) who is in like one episode and I want to write fanfic about him.

They call out tropes and avoid them as much as possible;

Cool action sequences

Love the mythology, and the set design of the Afterlife Immigration Office

Has a happy ending, at the very, very end!

Cons:

We only get to see Lee Yeon’s tails once. ONCE.

That’s all I can think of right now. I might edit this post later if I think of anything else.

Touch Your Heart (2019) 진심이 닿다

No fantasy element to this one, just a standard workplace romance dramedy. Once again, the promise of watching Lee Dong Wook be stupidly handsome and talented drew me into another show. I did not have high expectations, as the summary described it along the lines of “spoiled, ditzy actress takes a job at a law firm to save her career, butting heads with the firm’s ace lawyer, a stern, demanding attorney”. I was expecting a bossy alpha type lawyer who was abusive until he learns to love the girl, and instead we got a charmingly awkward Mr. Darcy type, who is only stern because he cares about justice and doing things the right way. 16 episodes, about 70 minutes each. I liked this one so much more than I thought I would! It’s gonna be on my rewatch rotation, I think, which is easy since it’s on Netflix!

Pros:

The female lead grows over the course of the show! She’s really only annoying for the first two episodes!

The main couple’s relationship is actually really sweet and wholesome, not unhealthy at all!

It’s a very funny show, plenty of slapstick humor from the supporting cast.

Personally, I really enjoy the show-within-the-show storylines, so I enjoyed that we get to see a bit of her life as an actress

Playing with rom-com tropes with a wink and a nod; so good!

No car accidents or comas!

Happy ending!

Cons:

Once again, Cartoon-Bad-Guy syndrome strikes. Stalkers are a real threat, but it’s harder to take them seriously when they’re mustache-twirling caricatures.

I would have liked to see our heroine be more physically assertive and stand up for herself, but she learns to be brave in other ways!

Edited to add: Product placement kind of disrupts the episode flow in a couple places. But not as bad as other shows I’ve seen.

Last thoughts:

Half the show takes place in a different genre, as prosecuting attorney Kim Se-won (male lead‘s best friend) and his prosecutor ex-girlfriend (Yoo Yeo-reum) are in a serious workplace drama across town;

Lawyers probably shouldn’t watch this show unless they have a strong stomach for tv-lawyer speak.

It’s a paint-by-numbers rom-com, but performing at the highest level of the genre, IMHO!

Not that anyone cares to know but here is a list of my favorite ships from the shows I watch

Chuck: Chuck and Sarah. My absolute favorite ship ever!! The most pure and genuine couple ever. I love them with my whole heart

Pretty Little Liars: Spencer and Toby. Love them to death. The first ship I ever cared about and they’ll always hold a special place in my heart

Friends: Ross and Rachel. Obviously there could be some better writing between the two but I’m a sucker for this will they won’t they

Gilmore Girls: Rory and Dean... I know I know but hear me out I like Rory and Dean before he got married. I wish that he would have never got married and that they found each other again later down the line and ended up together. I realize they don’t work with the actual storyline they went with

How I Met Your Mother: Ted and Robin...I know but hear me out again I also wish the storyline would have been different. I thought Robin and Barney made no sense and were absolutely toxic. I wish Barney and Robin never got married and Ted and Robin both grew and found their way back together. But I do think it was terrible for him to have a wife and then kill her off basically just to put him and Robin together but that’s just bad writing.

One Tree Hill: Lucas and Peyton. I love them a lot and did in fact stop watching the show once they left because it wasn’t the same without them.

Revenge: Daniel and Emily!!! I don’t even care if you don’t agree cause they were absolutely adorable. I think she genuinely fell in love with Daniel and should have just been friends with Jack.

The Vampire Diaries: Stefan and Elena. Again Damon and Elena were toxic. Stefan ALWAYS put Elena first and they deserved so much better.

Prison Break: Sara and Michael. I don’t even remember any other significant ships from that show but they were adorable.

Hart of Dixie: Zoe and Wade. I really love them together and loveee to see both of their character development.

White Collar: Sara and Neal. I thought they were so cute together.

Baby Daddy: Ben and Riley. Don’t get me wrong I love Danny but I think Riley goes better with Ben. I loved Ben’s character development and seeing how much he changed for the better after Riley. I really did love them and am still upset they didn’t end up together.

Parks and Recreation: Leslie and Ben. Honestly this was hard cause I like several of the ships on that show but the absolute sweetness of Leslie and Ben makes them take the cake.

Dawson’s Creek: Joey and Dawson. I know that this is probably my most unpopular opinion but oh well. I do think there should have been some better writing leading up to it and things made better with that better writing though. Honestly I was absolutely so confused and shocked when she ended up with Pacey. Might have been the most upset I’ve been about people ending up together. I mean even if she would have ended up with no one or even Eddie but I was just really upset she ended up with Pacey. Sorry not sorry.

Once Upon A Time: Hook and Emma. Absolutely adore them. They are so pure and adorable and have character development and ugh I love them so much.

The Night Shift: TC and Jordan. I really liked them so much and am upset the show was cancelled before we got to see them get back together.

New Girl: Schmidt and Cece. Also hard because I also love Nick and Jess but if I have to choose it’s Schmidt and CeCe.

Bones: Booth and Brennan. Absolutely LOVE them.

Blacklist: Ressler and Liz. Honestly conflicted about this rn cause I don’t know if she deserves him but I have always liked them together.

Stranger Things: Steve and Nancy. I loveeee Steve and could not believe she got together with Jonathan. Like did everyone forget about him taking photos of her????

The Good Place: Eleanor and Chidi. Literally so adorable love them both sooo much. They deserve the world.

Psych: Shawn and Juliet. Seriously how cute are they?? I’ll go ahead and tell you... the CUTEST.

Grey’s Anatomy: Derek and Meredith. You already know I’m team MerDer because honestly who isn’t?

Arrow: Oliver and Felicity. So prefect together love them

The Flash: Barry and Caitlin. I saw Barry and Iris as siblings especially since Barry called him dad which is why I don’t ship that also I feel like she didn’t actually start to really like him until she figured out he was the flash. And I think Barry and Caitlin are super cute and honestly thought they were gonna date way back in season 1. But I’m content with them just being friends I just wish we could see some more of that friendship because they’re adorable.

The Walking Dead: Glenn and Maggie!!!!!! Love love love love them! What’s better than falling in love during a zombie apocalypse? One of the bests ugh my heart. That ending was too sad and definitely made me quit watching the show.

A Million Little Things: Honestly I don’t know rn. I still like Katherine and Eddie but that might just be because Katherine is my fav. I just wish he would have told her about the pills right away and how he was struggling or something. I just have a hard time rooting for him because he’s put Katherine through so much. And then Rome and Regina are so adorable. And I adore Gary and like him with Maggie and Darcy and like Maggie with Gary and Jamie. So yeah I’m all over the place with this one. Honestly can’t pick a fav but felt like sharing those thoughts.

1. First Ship: Sam/Diane (Cheers). My parents were all in with Cheers, watching it over and over years after it went off the air. I had no choice but to commit to one of the OG Enemies to Lovers ships.

2. First OTP: Leia/Han (Star Wars). I was the wee-est of wee lasses watching Empire Strikes Back with my mom, clutching her hand “But! What! Happened! To! Han! Solo! Why! Isn’t! He! With! Princess! Leia!” while gulping back sobs. Scarred me in some fundamental ways.

3. Favorite Current Ship: These two idiots. When will it end.

4. Shipped from the first minute: Tim/Lyla (Friday Night Lights). Yes, she was with Jason when the show started and Tim was too much of a hard-drinking dude bro but the heart wants what it wants (to be clear, I’m talking about my heart here). I was actually the most sad about Jason being permanently paralyzed because I (correctly) foresaw that would keep Tim/Lyla apart longer out of guilt. And I firmly maintain that expecting me to swallow that Tim and Tyra would tiredly fall back together is the most far-fetched plot Friday Night Lights ever tried, EVEN MORE SO THAN WHEN TYRA AND LANDRY MURDERED THAT GUY.

5. Wish they had been endgame: Robin/Barney (How I Met Your Mother). Don’t think I will ever get over that last episode, kind of ruined the whole show.

6. Wish they had been canon: Sarah Connor/Derek Reese (The Sarah Connor Chronicles). This show was criminally underrated (to the point I couldn’t even find a gif of them together!) as was the chemistry between these two.

7. Ship everyone hates: Jaime/Cersei (GOT). Is it gross? Yes. Do I care? No.

8. Don’t even watch the show but still ship: Frank/Karen (The Punisher). I keep holding off binging this show b/c I feel like it’s gonna depress me plus it ends before they get together, right? But the gifs I see on Tumblr are fire.

9. Wish they had a different storyline: Carol/Daryl (The Walking Dead). Not much to add other than what @riosnecktattoo already said, but I will still be mad about these two on my deathbed. The only way this new spinoff can lure me back is if I see DOCUMENTED proof of them making out with accompanying audio of VERBAL expressions of love and even then, I will probably hold out out of spite (joking, I’ll break a thumb rushing to download whatever episode this happens in).

10. Actually endgame: Ben/Leslie (Parks and Rec). “I love you and I like you.”

And bonus movie couple Elizabeth Bennett/Fitzwilliam Darcy (Pride & Prejudice) – “Did you expect me to rejoice in the inferiority of your circumstances?”/”And those are the words of a gentleman? From the first moment I met you, your arrogance and conceit, your selfish disdain for the feelings of others made me realize that you were the last man in the world I could ever be prevailed upon to marry.” That’s the good stuff, right there.

A/N: This is my first attempt at a Rudy fic. My first series too! But if this flops, let's pretend it never happened, okay? :) But If you guys want to read more, please do let me know. Your love and support is the encouragement I need. I got the concept from tik tok haha. Fair warning, I am handwriting out chapters with a pen and paper before converting it digitally, so updates with be spread out. THERE WILL BE GRAMMAR MISTAKES! I'm human, and Tumblr is my test run for this series. Anywho, hope you enjoy :)

In Nevaeh's opinion, airports were the worst. It wasn't due to the 38,000 feet in the air flying ride or the nothingness in the sky you see your whole flight; it was the people, the airports themselves, and the limited space.

Airports were much worse than flying - especially the San Francisco International Airport. Also known as SFO Airport. The few times, literally very few times, Nevaeh has been to the airport, she had poor experiences. Now, SFO Airport is definitely smaller than LAX and not as busy - it's a nightmare. You would think with a much smaller airport, there would be fewer crowds, but no, it's like a family reunion every day but with strangers. If you bump into the wrong person, your day on the off chance will get ruined.

Along with the busy crowds, there are many places to eat. From pizza to Italian to pie, your choices are endless. That's until half or more restaurants are closed or have long lines. Nevaeh never ate airport food, so she couldn't give her opinion on it. She'll leave that to the professional reviews. She wasn't at SFO Airport to judge the food or traffic flow, not even the staff's attitude - except she already gave a flight attendant a glare. The flight attendant took a bathroom break before their next flight and griped at Nevaeh because she used the last paper towel so they couldn't dry their hands. Air drying is a thing, and it works well, she thought to herself while leaving the restroom. She was not going to let one grumpy flight attendant ruin her great mood. She was going to meet someone who she hopes is special today.

Over the past two months, Nevaeh and this person had gotten to know each other well, virtually, that is. They met online, and Nevaeh lived in San Francisco while they lived in Alaska. Countless messages, facetime calls, photos, and videos were exchanged, and a bond was formed. Who would have thought that two people could meet through a video sharing social media app and hit it off? Most people start with dating apps, meet and get to know different people, but Nevaeh met them all because a video of hers popped up on their for you page.

Nevaeh created and shared a variety of things on the app. From cooking to creating and her little hobby of disco skating. She wanted to keep her followers and supporters entertained and herself; she didn’t want to be stuck, making the same content, so she did many things. Nevaeh thought maybe one of her disco skating, videography, or cooking videos drew them in, but it was one of her mini vlogs. In the video, she showed how she would scout places before spending the day getting footage for a short montage film or scenes for a movie she is working on. Not long after the discovery, they - he sent her a message asking about a more in-depth explanation of her process, and it went up from there.

Now, after all this time of them chatting back and forth, they get to meet. Nevaeh gets to meet him.

Standing by the arrival gate, her eyes bouncing around the room at different things just to keep her mind centered and not all over the place. She wanted to pick at her nails, or hold her hands to her chest but she couldn’t hold them in place for long; she opted for playing with the white beaded bracelet he bought and sent to her in a box full of other things. It was so sweet of him; just thinking about the box she received makes her smile and her heart swell. Just last week she received a box full of thoughtful gifts. Inside were some of her favorite snacks, a movie she loved, one of his hoodies - it was the hoodie he wore the first time they facetimed. The hoodie was one of his favorites, but he had the urge to send it to her, he just wanted her to have it. And finally was the white beaded bracelet with a single aqua blue bead on it - he had the matching one with all aqua beads and one single black bead. She was having an uncreative and pretty shitty day until that box arrived on the front door step of her shared apartment.

“I wanted to surprise you, so I messaged Birdie asking her for your favorite snacks, I added the hoodie and got the two of us distance bracelets. You know, because we are long distance.” He told her later that day when they talked on the phone.

“Until you come here, or I go there,” she replied. She hasn’t stopped wearing the hoodies since and she has had the bracelet on since the moment she got it.

Nevaeh watched different people walk past her; none of them were him yet. The dirty blond mess he sported for hair shouldn't be that hard to miss, but the longer she searched, the more she doubted her assumption.

It was another couple of minutes that went by, and she didn't see him, so she pulled her phone out to see if he had sent something. Maybe he has to catch a different flight, and he forgot to tell her, or perhaps he didn't want to meet after all. Her fingers type out a message to send, but a figure stands in front of her before she hits the send button. Nevaeh could see the shadow of their body from her peripheral vision, but she did not look up, hoping they would go away - but they didn't. Sending her message, the woman was preparing to turn away until she heard the stranger's phone go off. It's just a coincidence that their phone went off a couple of seconds after I sent a message. She said to herself, then she looked up and there he was. Dirty blond hair - a little long all over, but instead of it being in his face like it always is, it was pushed back and tucked underneath a red cap. His eyes were more lovely in person. The pair ranged from a light blue to gray, depending on the day. Today they were light blue. He sported stubble across his chin and cheeks with a blond mustache above his top lip. He wore nothing flashy, just a simple red ACDC sweatshirt, cargo shorts, and a pair of vans. He looked tired, but that didn't throw off the good vibes and smile he had going on. She couldn't help but smile back. He's here in the flesh. Rudy.

"Hi," he said light-heartedly, breaking the silence.

"Hi," she echoed; the smile on her face grew some more. "Wow, you're really here in the flesh."

He chuckled, and the sound woke up the butterflies in her stomach. "Yeah, I am. And you...the pictures and videos don't do enough justice for the actual thing." His eyes scan over her, noticing the navy blue Hilfiger sweatshirt he sent to her. Nevaeh couldn't help the dust of blush that appeared on her cheek.

“Talk about me, what about you? Who knew those Snapchat filters were hiding such a god-like person.”

“Oh, stop, you’re making me blush,” he joked while bashful. No matter online or in person, Nevaeh was still able to get him flushed; it was something he didn’t want to admit, not while he was flying blind with this.

Nevaeh smiled and had a tiny giggle; the full laugh was muffled by the hand she brought up to her mouth in an attempt to hold the sound back. He could watch her smile for a while. Is that weird? “How was your flight? I hope it wasn’t too horrible.”

“It wasn’t too bad,” he admitted. “Definitely long, but nothing a pair of earbuds, music, and a couple of movies couldn’t fix.” The two quickly began walking toward the direction of baggage claim. More of Rudy just following whichever direction Nevaeh was going. She did know the airport better anyway.

“Which movies did you watch?” she asked.

“Since I had six hours to waste - Joker, 1917 and Pride & Prejudice.”

“Oh, I see you listened to my suggestions; not surprised you watched Joker again,” Rudy shrugged his shoulders with a hum. “I’m surprised you didn’t watch the Harry Potter movies.”

Rudy rolled his eyes and scoffed. “Actually, I already watched them a couple of days ago,” Nevaeh hummed as if she were to say, ‘of course’ “You can judge me all you want. I won’t pay you any mind. Just the same as I did with the guy that had the aisle seat in my row. I guess other guys find it weird that a guy decided to watch a period drama on a flight.”

“He was just jealous he didn’t think of it first. Mr. Darcy’s pinning for Miss. Bennett and the film’s overarching theme is too good not to watch.”

“That it is, who would want to miss the warnings heeded against trusting one’s first impression or prejudices?”

“Or the character arcs that grow throughout the storyline. I pity that aisle sitting man.”

“I do too,” Rudy agreed. “He missed out on a classic and had to get up to let the other person and me out to take a tinkle.” He did it again. He made her laugh genuinely. The conversation between them flowed. The small worry Nevaeh had earlier about the two of them not being able to continue the light-hearted and enjoyable nature they had over text had diminished. He seemed just the same - goofy, charismatic, charming, and caring - as he was over the phone the past month and a half. She, too, was still kind, compassionate, and sarcastic as before. Yet both of them had their own doubts about the thing they were doing; they didn’t know what it was or where it was headed, but they were willing to find out.

In the car, Nevaeh drove the route she knew from the airport to her shared apartment. Rudy sat in the passenger seat; his gaze focused out the window, watching the San Francisco scenery appear, disappear and morph as they passed by the window. The radio played while they sat in a comfortable silence - it impressed her how easily they fell into it. Wasn't it common for an uncomfortable silence? Two people who just met for the first time should struggle in an attempt to make a conversation, but not them.

To Rudy, the comfortable silence was almost expected. Granted, he did expect one of them to talk the other's ear off - he's glad neither of them was. The six-hour flight took its effect on the man, but he wasn't going to let his fatigue ruin the time they had together. He'll rest later. Spend time with her now, sleep later.

The car rolled to a stop, a red light shined on the traffic light hanging in front of them. Rudy's eyes watch a girl across the street riding down the sidewalk on a skateboard. Her stance relaxed, feet planted in a way that helped her ride easily; she was experienced, probably skated regularly. Watching her skate triggered a longing in Rudy for his board back at home. He rides on concrete and in the snow, but he was missing snowboarding the most. It was beginning to be summer, so the temperatures in Alaska were warmer. To warm for snow but warm enough for the evergreen to take over. Now he was in California, the state that was sunny all the time. The state that thrived in the summer and its soil hardly ever to never had the chilled touch of snow. His longing grew more for the chilly weather and white flakes.

The woman sitting next to him took the next couple of seconds between the light change to look at him. Catching the moment of his gaze out the window of her jeep. "I know you're probably tired from your flight. I had some ideas about the things we could do, but we don't have to do anything today." She spoke and after, glanced at the traffic light only to see it was still red.

Rudy tore his gaze from the distant image of the skater and met Nevaeh's. "I am, but if you want to do something, we can. I'm more than happy to hang out." He said.

Trying to reason, she said, "I know, but you just got off a six-hour flight."

"Nevaeh, it's fine. I'm not that burned out. Time zones are an hour apart, and seven am isn't that bad." she begins to give him a skeptical look. She heard his words but feels as if he was only saying that to make her happy. He sat by her, leaned back, and relaxed. His head sat lazily against the headrest, and the smile he was giving her was light but tiresome. She switched her gaze from him to the traffic light, which turned green, and she didn't know when. Nevaeh eased her foot off the brake and to the gas pedal. "Seriously, we can do something."

“Fine,” She says after a moment. “I won’t wear you out too much more.” Flicking her left turn signal on after checking her mirror, she merges into the lane beside her. “There’s somewhere I wanna take you - well, maybe two places, but we’re going to the apartment first.”

“Alright, sounds good to me.” Nevaeh drove them to the apartment she shared with her long term friend. Rudy followed behind her as she led the way; they only spent a few minutes there. After a short tour, a bathroom break, and dropping off a couple of suitcases later, Rudy and Nevaeh left the place. They began a walk along the San Francisco hills to the mysterious place Nevaeh had in mind.

“This place is somewhere I walk to every other day. It’s Birdie’s and my favorite place.” It was a short six to eight-minute walk. Nevaeh reassured him before briefly going into a conversation about the impressive things you see in the city. Just like Nevaeh told him, they both come up upon a corner shop with a couple of large windows to see inside and out, a brown exterior with outside tables with green umbrellas and foldable outdoor chairs. The corner shop was known as the Nasik Cafe. For a small cafe, the place was doing well. There were a handful of people inside sitting, chatting, or ordering and quite a few sitting outside.

“This place is pretty health-oriented, and like Starbucks, it has things you could make at home for free, but their stuff is great,” Nevaeh explained to the man.

"So you spend way too much on yogurt cups, fruit drinks, toast, and other food you can make at home?" She nods her head like it was evident at what he said. Rudy shook his head. "Couldn't you just spend ten dollars on a yogurt cup?"

"Oh my goodness, they don't have yogurt cups, Rudy." She shook her head in disbelief.

"Okay, so ten dollars for a banana blended with ice in a cup - still sounds ridiculous to me."

"I can't with you," She tilted her head back, but she wasn't annoyed. She found his witticism amusing. At this rate, Nevaeh should prepare to always smile all the time around him. "You should find a table out here, and I can grab us something - wait, do you want to sit out here?"

Rudy nodded, then began to scan the area but only briefly seeing a couple of empty tables. "Yeah, it's nice out, let's enjoy it. Out here is great."

"Great," she says, pleased. "I'll grab something; I wanna surprise you. I'll be back." Nevaeh turns to walk inside. The smell of strawberries, oranges, and granola invaded her nose. It wasn't a new smell to her, but a new one for the day. She would always smell fruit and granola wherever she would walk into Basik. Some days it smelt like bananas and chocolate, or honey, peanut butter, and coconut. The smells varied, but the most prominent one was the tropical smell. To her left at a table was a couple enjoying smoothies. Both cops were a little under half full. A person sat at another table, invested in their laptop. To her right, more people sat. Art adorns the walls as realism paintings along with abstract images. There was a line at the counter; no more than four people stood waiting. She took the time to look up at the big and wide wood board hanging from the ceiling. When Nevaeh told Rudy she wanted to surprise him with something, she knew what she was getting for the both of them. The colorful and fruitful acai bowls.

Nevaeh and her roommate Birdie loved acai bowls. Birdie was the one to introduce her friend to the fantastic bowls she grew to love. Now it was her turn to turn another friend onto them.

The line moved along smoothly and grew smaller by the minutes. Once Nevaeh got closer, her lips stretched into a grin as her eyes caught sight of the barista.

"Hi, what can I get you? Could I interest you in our new fall to-Vae! Hey." the blonde barista's mood brightened significantly when she realized she was taking Nevaeh's order. She leaned across the counter and grabbed hold of Nevaeh's hand, and laced their fingers together. "What are you doing here? I thought you had to pick up your friend." She said, then making finger quotations. The barista was her roommate, Birdie. Birdie was a full-time college student and full-time barista to get by. She was more than happy to talk to her friend now that she wasn't as busy - Nevaeh was the only person in line for now.

"I was - I did pick up my friend. No air quotes, we're friends."

"For now."

"Whatever," she rolled her eyes at the blonde. "He's here with me, just outside." Birdie looked past Nevaeh and out the window in search of this guy. Nevaeh looked around for him, too; she didn't get to see where he chose to sit. "He's...the one with the red cap, right there." She pointed out once she spotted him. Birdie hummed and squinted her eyes to get a better look, which was difficult with the angle he sat at.

"He looks nice...from here," Birdie leaned back, so her fingers could let go of Nevaeh's and tap the terminal screen as she put her friend's usual order in. While Birdie did that, Nevaeh nodded in agreement but kept her gaze on him. "Lemme guess, the usual?"

"Kilauea; everything but-"

"No pollen and extra honey." Birdie finished with assuredness and not a drop of doubt in her answer. Her friend smiled, her eyes looking to Birdie with amazement.

"You know me too well."

"Well, you order the same thing almost every time."

"Touche," she couldn't argue with that. When it came to her acai bowl, she liked the Kilauea - made with mango juice, granola, berries, papaya, honey, and acai - the best. "And water, of course - make that two." She stepped back to look over the menu. Rudy wasn't familiar with the place, and he didn't know what they served, so Nevaeh wanted to get him something he hopefully liked. She decided to go with something not too fancy - directing her attention back to her barista friend. She went ahead and finished her order. "And...let me get the Islander acai bowl." That one was made with hemp mylk, granola, banana, berries, cocoa shavings, and honey.

Birdie rang up the rest of the order for Nevaeh. After catching a glimpse at the total, Nevaeh reached in the little card pocket of her wallet and grabbed her card. Unbeknownst to her, while she was getting her card, Birdie took her name tag and gave her friend her employee discount - she got it for half the price.

“I know you’re an independent woman and paying for the first date, the least I could do is give you a discount. Just don’t tell Daniel.” She winked, and Nevaeh gave her a thumbs up with one hand, and with the other, she made a zipping and locking motion over her mouth before throwing the key.

Outside, Rudy sat at the table he picked out for the two of them while waiting. While Nevaeh ran inside to get their order, he observed the small San Francisco scenery around him. California weather was sunshine with fluffy clouds. Just about everyone was either in shorts, a tank, and a cut-off shirt or any other summer clothing that provided them some comfort in the blazing sun. He dressed just right for the weather, though in Alaska, it was more on the chill side, causing him to wear a sweatshirt while he left. Now that he was basking in the California weather, he took off the warm sweatshirt and left it at Nevaeh’s apartment.

There were other people outside along with him. A group of girls sat a few feet away at a table in front of him, trying not to giggle as they attempted to make a video. At another table, there were two guys, perhaps brothers. They were eating something colorful from a bowl - it looked like yogurt to Rudy - and having a conversation with one another.

Rudy shook his head at the drastic difference between the two tables. Maybe it was just him, but it was amazing how much the world - more specifically America- was wrapped up in technology and social media. Sure the brothers at the one table had digital watches that told them the time and lit up, catching their attention with a vibrate when a text or notification went to their phone. But at least they could carry on a conversation without having their phone in their hands. On the other hand, those girls haven’t put their phones down longer than a few seconds. After those seconds, they tap away or show the other something they thought was worthy enough to gauge a reaction out of them.

Rudy wasn't one to judge. He didn't have much right to because while watching them and waiting for Nevaeh, he had the urge to pull out his phone. It was almost like a habit, but he chooses not to feed the temptation. He wanted to enjoy the day with Nevaeh; notice the burn on his skin from the sun, get to know her, have fun, pick up on little cues she has, and find out what he likes the most about her. And though it was kind of ironic that the two of them met through social media, he hopes Nevaeh is not one of those social zombies. Then this trip would be a waste of time and effort.

Ruby pulled his sunglasses down due to the sun starting to bother his eyes. Then he also wanted to cover his eyes and focus on something else while he waited. A minute later, Nevaeh walked out of the cafe's door backward with her back pushing the door open. In her hands, she had what she ordered; he wondered what she got. Rudy briskly stood up out of his seat to help her out.

"Hey, let me help you out," he walks around the table towards her, but she only nods him off.

"I got it, you sit."

"You have all the food and drinks in your hands; it's the least I can do." he stood off to the side, not interfering but reading despite what she said. He watches her struggle a bit and almost drops the stuff. Rudy immediately reached out, but Nevaeh had already saved herself and looked at him with a smile.

"I got it, Rudy. I was just pulling your leg." He picked up on the playfulness in her eyes, which made him pull his lips into a smile matching hers; her smile is definitely contagious.

“Alright, alright,” he raised his hands, backing away and then taking his seat. Nevaeh took her seat across from him, sat everything down before passing him the items she got him. “What’d you get us?”

“Well, I don’t know if you have had this before, but it’s my go-to thing to get here. It’s an acai bowl,” Nevaeh’s eyes caught his confused expression before he tried to cover it up with an understanding. She laughed softly and explained further. “It’s like a smoothie bowl with other things in it.”

“Smoothie bowl…” he murmured more to himself, but she still heard it.

Shaking her head, she continued. “Acai palm is the main ingredient along with bananas and granola, but you can add other fruits or peanut butter and syrups. Or take things off.”

“Like maple syrup?” he asked, looking at the acai bowl she got him.

Her face begins to twist in disgust until she covers it with a shrug and looks down at her bowl, ready to dig in. “Uh, I guess if that’s what you want, then yeah.” She answered, and Rudy nodded his head and grabbed his spoon to take a taste. Before Nevaeh tasted her own, she watched Rudy, waiting for his reaction. He took a bite, letting the flavor invade his taste buds.

“Wow, this is good,” He says after swallowing. He glanced up, catching Nevaeh already looking at him. She quickly looked away and stirred her bowl.

“I’m glad you like it; it’s my second favorite one,” she peeked back up, and Rudy was still looking at her. Laughing softly to herself, then shaking her head, she takes a bite of her own, almost moaning at the taste. “I’m surprised you haven’t had one before.”

“ I have wanted to try one, but never really went with actually going out to get one.”

“Well, maybe now you will get them more often,” She says but stops herself before taking another bite. “Wait...you aren’t allergic to any fruit, are you? Or granola?”

He lifted a brow while getting another scoop. “Oh, only bananas,” He replies. Nevaeh watches him as he lifts the spoon to his mouth and takes another bite that includes bananas before she could reach across the table and stop him in time. “What?” he looked at her. Her eyes were wide with shock and fear, her mouth opening to say something but closed when nothing came out. “Is there something wrong?”

Nodding her head slowly, she sat down her spoon and reached for her phone in her pocket just in case. "You ate a banana, and you just told me you were allergic to them." Nevaeh wanted to yell at him for being so careless, but that would mean she was too for not asking before ordering something random for him. She pretended to remain calm but was internally panicking.

"I actually eat them all the time," he held back the smile easing its way into his features. "I eat them quite often. They're a great source of potassium and vitamin C."

"So you aren't allergic to bananas?" she noted, and Rudy shook his head. His mouth broke out into the smile he managed to hold back for a few seconds. Nevaeh relaxed a bit, her shoulders dropping as she was no longer tense. "You're an asshole, you know that, right?" Rudy gasped softly, a hand placed on his chest as he looked at her, offended at her comment.

"What, me, an asshole? That can't be right, I'm really nice," he said and made Nevaeh huffed. "What do you not believe me?"

The woman shrugged, the smile still on her face when she looked down at her food. "Well, you did play a mean joke just now; I thought I almost killed you." She reminded him and picked at her bowl.

"I wanted to see how caring you were, and you passed the test. Now you love me, don't you?"

"You wish," she said, taking a bite then pointing at him with her spoon. "We're going on a road trip together, let's see if I survive that, then I'll let you know if I like you enough to be your friend or jump out of a moving car because you're an annoying little shit."

Rudy raised his eyebrows, smirking at her now. "Me being an annoying little...alright. Let's make a deal," he starts; Nevaeh gestures for him to continue. "If you survive this road trip, meaning - if you have a great time - I get to take you to my home town in Alaska. Ah, ah. I'm not finished." he held his finger up to stop her from making a comment. She rolled her eyes and sat back in her chair, attempting to hide a simple, but you could see the amusement on her face. "If you don't have a great time, I'll do whatever you want."

"So, If I understand right, If you win, you get to take me to Alaska - assuming I haven't been there already,"

“Wait, you’ve been to Alaska?” Nevaeh held her finger up, echoing his movements moments before.

“If you win, you take me to Alaska, and if I win, you do whatever I want, correct?”

“Yeah, as long as it’s not too inappropriate or impossible,” He says, already finished with his acai bowl, which Nevaeh didn’t remember seeing him eat the rest. It didn’t matter when he ate it, she didn’t care, but that was quick. Looking down at her own, she wasn’t more than halfway done. “So, so we have a deal?”

Nevaeh looked up from her food, meeting his ocean-like eyes. The pair were becoming more familiar over the past few weeks from countless photos and videos the two have shared over Snapchat. Messages over text and facetime calls. They got to know each other digitally, and now they have to learn more in person.

“We have a deal.” She says, and Rudy sticks his hand out, which she gladly took. They shook hands. While doing so, Rudy thought of a million possibilities to get the woman across from him to a great time and not just so he could take her to Alaska, his home. He found her intriguing, and he wants to take the time to get to know her better and maybe have a solid standing friendship at the end of it all. If the cosmos had a say, perhaps something more would blossom.

So, I honestly don’t know how the next few or future chapters will go but hopefully they turn out well. Here are the Revaeh interactions we all needed and plenty more to come so just you wait. ;)

I feel like I could just chill with Helia, maybe do some art and debate random issues from philosophy to ice cream flavours.

Griffin. I wonder about her perspective on things in season 1 and how it changed. I mean, at first she was chill with the Trix almost murdering an Alfea student, and actively encouraged the witches to mess with fairies. How did that change after the Trix invasion?

- Free Diaspro or Bloom (from Sky)

Diaspro I guess. Whether she's redeemed or stays a villain, I'd rather she have some storyline that doesn't revolve around Sky for once.

- Gain Enchantix through Tecna’s method or Flora’s

I hate the cold so Flora's it is! Over quicker and back by dinner.

- Have Stella lose her face forever or Tecna lose her emotions forever

Brandon and the others have shown that they love Stella for who she is inside and not for her looks, and Stella has grown a lot in that losing her face wouldn't keep her down as much as it would have at the start of the series (as we've seen in the Crystal Labyrinth episode, where she was able to joke about her "mug", compared to her reaction when she got spelled by Chimera). She'd still be Stella without her looks, whereas Tecna would lose part of her whole identity without emotions, so yeah I'd prefer Stella losing her face. Also my tecmy heart wouldn't be able to handle Tecna losing her emotions right after coming back from the Omega Dimension :')

- Break up Stella x Brandon or Aisha x Nabu (assuming he’s alive)

Ah maannn okay I'd break up Aisha and Nabu just because I feel like they'd be able to handle it and still have a respectful friendship later. With brella, I think the heartbreak would be too much? Like, they wouldn't be able to just stay friends.

- Break up Flora x Helia or Tecna x Timmy

Tecna and Timmy are a set, do not separate. At least I could give Flora a girlfriend, since she seemed queer-coded to me in season 1.

- Break up Bloom x Sky or Musa x Riven

Bloom and Sky. It would be interesting to see the main couple split up, and could teach a lesson about falling out of love and knowing when to recognise it. It would be even more potent given their relationship is kinda modeled after a child-like fantasy of a perfect royal couple.

- Make Blicy or Driven endgame

Eh, I'm neutral on both of them so I guess Blicy? The ice/fire contrast is fun and very poetic.

- Cancel Fate or reboot the cartoon

Welp, however much I complain about it, Fate will still exist even if cancelled. I would rather we could at least compare it a well-written, faithful reboot that appeals to older audiences without being offensive. Hopefully, other shows would follow its example rather than do what Fate is doing.

- Reveal who’s behind anon asks or never be able to send anon asks

Eh, I wouldn't want to invade people's privacy and I'm not too fussed about sending asks off anon, so the second option.

Summer Book Sprint!

I've mostly moved into my tiny house, but my wifi situation is not quite stable yet. So, instead of constantly streaming podcasts and shows (I got back into CR for EXU only to lose it again...) I've read more books this week than I have for all of 2020!

I feel like documenting this unusual productivity. So, here's what we've got so far. I started light with a fantasy/historical fiction and then a whole deluge of modern romcoms.

For each book I am recording: a) how many times did I cry? b) how queer is the story? c) was I compelled to be a goblin and stay up way too late or read at work when I should have been doing other down-time tasks like shelfreading the DVDs? d) overall rating out of 11 stars and e) do I recommend it and to whom?

Titles and ratings under the cut, so I don't decimate anyone's dash.

Written in the Stars by Alexandria Bellefleur

A cotton candy read, sweet and fluffy, quick and impermanent. Definitely fun, but this one didn't leave much of an impression on me tbh. Very online humor from Elle, I've definitely seen some of her jokes before as tumblr posts, and that didn't super work for me. It did manage to make me invested in reading about characters solving an escape room, so kudos there. I was excited by the blurbs calling it gay modern Pride & Prejudice..... it is NOT that, but it is good at what it is! Times Cried: 2. It does a good job of getting into the heads of the POV characters, and I definitely was rooting for them. Was It Queer: Yeah! Was I A Goblin: Not really. I was able to keep it in my bag until my lunch break without much issue. Overall: 6 stars out of 11. Fun, sexy, sweet, quickly over. Cotton candy, whipped cream, you get it. I'd recommend this to readers who: Think naming a character Darcy makes this a modern Pride & Prejudice?? (that is, like Darcy's roiling sexual frustration under his uptight demeanor more than his feudal land-lording skills). Were very online in 2015, but in a Pintrest way. Want a tall girl to make a spreadsheet and fuck them on it.

The Ex Talk by Rachel Lynn Solomon

I have Very Strong Opinions about my local NPR affiliate, so this was very fun for me. The sexist boss stuff was a little heavy-handed, and the Orcas Island bit and The Confession felt contrived enough to take me out of the story a little, but the characters were so well-built and compelling that I stuck it out for them. Times Cried: 1, but I did laugh a lot. Was It Queer: No. Was I A Goblin: Yes, I was almost late back from my lunch break because I had to read another chapter. Overall: 7 out of 11 stars. Clever setting, strong main characters, truly funny dialog. I'd recommend this to readers who: Would love to listen to a podcast about two exes giving relationship advice in real life. Love a good old-fashioned sexist man gets his comeuppance storyline. Have been personally victimized by public radio donation drives.

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V. E. Schwab

Best book I read this week. Really well-handled magic that is revealed and explored in a very engaging way. I did think it was sort of silly that a practically immortal character would stay only in Europe/the US for 300 years, many of which had international flight, but that's more of a nitpick than a true plot hole. Times Cried: A chart-topping 7! Was It Queer: While both of the main characters are bi/pan, and there are a number of queer supporting characters..... the story does not feel very queer to me. It doesn't explore queerness or queer topics, it's just about characters who are queer. There were some missed chances, I guess, especially in the gender department. Was I A Goblin: I didn't even have a chance to take this to work, because I read it all in one sitting and went to bed after 1 because I couldn't put it down. Peak goblin behavior. Overall: 9 stars out of 11. Engaging, mysterious, interesting world and compelling characters. I'd recommend this to readers who: Want art history courses that are just juicy gossip about the lives of Renaissance painters. Think lawyers are sexy when they find loopholes in copyright contracts. Are monsterfuckers but in the straight way, where they love an attractive white man who sometimes turns into smoke and mostly because they want to be special to him when he's Capital E Evil to everyone else.

Red, White, and Royal Blue by Casey McQuinston

Turns out, books that get fantastic ratings from both big-name publications and the bookblrs I follow tend to be very good! A great cast of characters, heart-string pulling love letters, dramatic speeches... this has got it all. Times Cried: 4. Add Henry to the list of fictional characters I need to hug and make hot cocoa for. Was It Queer: Hell yeah! Was I A Goblin: Oh, absolutely. Overall: 9 out of 11 stars. Honestly just a joy to read. Engaging start, darling middle, uplifting end. I'd recommend this to readers who: Think West Wing should get a sexy reboot with a younger, queerer cast. Appreciate the value of an annotated bibliography when sexting. Love a good supportive sibling dynamic.

First Comes Like by Alisha Rai This fake-dating drama just keeps escalating, but in an authentic and easy way. The side characters feel a little under-utilized, but only because there's so many and each one is interesting. Times Cried: 1. Mostly I was having too good a time! Was It Queer: Not as a focus. Was I A Goblin: Yes indeed. Overall: 7 out of 11 stars. Funny, fast-paced and full of twists. I'd recommend this to readers who: Think the sexiest things a man can do are respect women and be a good dad. Loves sisters loving sisters. Figure if they've dug themselves a hole, they might as well keep going till they hit gold.

The Debut

Thomas walked down the corridor of St Orella that led to the rooms the family tended to use more than the other wings. He grimaced at hearing gasps from a tour group that was currently on their way to the portrait gallery. Nearly six years as the Duke of St Orella had yet to make him comfortable with strangers coming by every Saturday afternoon.

He nodded briefly to the people without breaking his stride. Cameras flashed as excited murmurs grew in volume at having caught the famous director at what was considered his second home. The closer he got to the sitting room Amanda preferred made the tense muscles in his shoulders relax.

His lips curved when he heard the squeal followed by laughter. He opened one of the doors and paused. Amanda was chasing a giggling Kathleen around the room. Their recently turned one year old was laughing while trying to playfully evade her mother that was laughing along with her.

Thomas swooped down and captured the toddler when she came within reach. Kathleen squealed again as he held her above his head. Her little dimpled hands grabbed his cheeks. Her smile was wide when he lowered her down for a quick kiss on her cheek.

"Your grace, this was delievered by royal courier." Hudson bowed and handed Amanda the mail. "Would you care for me to bring your tea tray?"

"Yes, thank you Hudson." She replied. "And please add Kathleen's sippy cup with milk." She looked up at Thomas. "Would you care for some coffee?"

He nodded while setting Kathleen down on the blanket in the center of the room covered with toys and books.

Hudson bowed with a smile at Kathleen waving and saying bye to him. "I'll be back, Lady Kathleen." He promised.

Thomas chuckled at the stoic butler’s inability to keep from smiling at Kathleen’s sweetness. He sat down beside Amanda. His curiosity piqued at the elegant envelope in her hand.

"Who's that from?" He asked.

"The Queen Mother." Amanda opened it and smiled. "It's an invitation for Kathleen to be officially introduced to the Royal family." Her voice became a touch reminiscent. "I had completely forgotten about that."

"Introduction? Liam and Riley were at the hospital when she was born." He pointed out. "I can't imagine introducing them to her any sooner than having them be the ones to deliver her."

Amanda laughed softly causing Kathleen to look over at them with a big smile. "This is a formal debut of sorts." She explained.

"Formal?" Thomas repeated. "How formal?"

"Tuxeudo formal for you, Lord Thomas. Ballgown for me and a formal white dress for our little lady." Amanda placed the gilded invitation in the desk drawer with the few other items she planned to add to Kathleen's memory book.

"Isn't she a little young to be attending a ball at the palace?" Thomas asked. "We rarely stay until the end."

Amanda sat back beside him, settling against him when he wrapped his arms around her. "It isn't much of a ball and is held early in the evening due to the age of those making their first official appearances."

He rested his cheek against the top of her head as they watched their daughter babble to the stuffed corgi that had been one of her birthday gifts from the little princes. She got up and toddled over to them, giving the stuffed animal to Amanda.

"Thank you so much." Amanda said and then dropped a quick kiss to Kathleen's nose. She scrunched her face with a giggle before going back to the blanket. She picked up a book and brought it to Thomas.

He smiled and thanked her. She bent her head forward for him to drop a kiss on her forehead. She then tried to climb between them. Amanda picked her up and cuddled her close.

Hudson returned with a tray and chuckled when Kathleen tried to say his name. He presented her with her sippy cup with a bow.

"Say thank you, Hudson." Amanda encouraged her to try.

Kathleen scrunched her shoulders while trying. Her smile grew when Hudson told her she was very welcome.

"Ring if you need anything else, my lord and ladies." He told them as he left.

Kathleen crawled into Thomas's lap with her cup. She took the book she had brought over and handed it to him again.

He chuckled. "Is that a hint?" He opened the book and started reading Good Night Mr. Darcy.

Kathleen fell asleep to his rhythmic, deep voice. He placed her in the playpen set on the other side of the room and covered her up.

He accepted the coffee Amanda had prepared. "This debut...what does it entail? It isn't a miniature marriage mart type event for the two little princes is it?"

Amanda stirred her tea and bit back a smile. "No, it isn't a marriage mart." Her eyes twinkled with mirth. "No more Mr. Darcy books for you."

He rolled his eyes. "What is the purpose of this then?"

"It's a tradition for each new generation of nobles. The debut is meant to plant the seeds of responsibility and loyalty to their king and country." She explained. "Plus it gives us a chance to show off how wonderful our girl is."

He softly kissed his wife. "We do have a lot to be proud of." Thomas glanced over at the playpen before meeting Amanda's eyes. He knew what was going to happen. "When will we be traveling to the palace?"

Thomas stepped out of the bathroom while trying to place his cufflinks in his sleeves. "Will you help me with these?"

Amanda took the simple gold cufflinks and slipped them in. He looked down at her and lifted an eyebrow.

"I thought you were wearing the St Orella colors tonight."

She sighed softly. "I was. While you were in the shower, I went to check on Kathleen. Along the way, I somehow stepped on the hem and ripped the skirt. Riley sent up the only dress they had in my size." She gestured to the purple gown she had on. "I should have brought a backup dress to the palace."

Thomas wrapped the arm she wasn't working on around her. "You look beautiful."

She smiled as his lips ghosted over her bare shoulder. "As long as you think so." They both turned to the open doorway when they heard Kathleen. "Wait until you see her." Amanda told him to remain where he was as she went to retrieve their daughter.

Thomas slipped his jacket on and buttoned it. He lifted his eyes when Amanda cleared her throat. Kathleen stood beside her, gripping her mother's fingers. Her expression was serious as she looked at him.

He crouched down, grinning when she walked to him.

"What do you think?" Amanda asked.

"I think she looks like you." He picked up the little lady in white. "Which is the highest compliment I can give her."

Kathleen pulled at his bowtie. Her dark eyes met his and she rested her head on his shoulder.

"We have one more stop before the ball." Amanda told him.

"Pictures?" Thomas asked. Nobles with their latest offspring were posing outside in the courtyard for photographers.

"Of course." Amanda slipped her arm around his waist. "Her first formal event must be captured for posterity."

Kathleen looked around and seemed to turn suddenly shy at seeing the number of strangers around them. She gripped Thomas's jacket when he tried to set her down.

Amanda helped untangle her from him. She pressed her face against her mother's neck and held tight.

Amanda pressed a kiss to the top of her head. "We aren't leaving you, sweetheart. Would you smile at least once for me?" She whispered.

Kathleen lifted her head when they neared the camera. She reached out for it as a smile formed.

"I wonder where she got that particular interest from." Amanda teased.

Thomas chuckled as they sat Kathleen down on a stone bench. They watched her charm the photographer with her sweet shyness. Once a few pictures were taken of just her, he then took some poses of Amanda with her daughter.

The once labeled unfeeling director felt his heart nearly hurt at seeing the two that had completely changed his life. His typical frown never remained long whenever they were near and seeing the joy on their faces as they looked at one another did much to improve his mood.

Amanda switched places with Thomas, watching the poses for the father/daughter shots. Her heart nearly burst from the sweetness of seeing the two she loved more than anything smiling. Kathleen looked up at him with a degree of adoration that was surpassed by the one Thomas settled on her.

"Now for all of you, please." The photographer positioned the family of three together.

Thomas slid his arms around Amanda from behind as she held Kathleen. Their little lady laughed at the the two as they encouraged her to look at the camera. Once all was completed, they took their place to be announced before the court.

Kathleen rubbed her eyes as she rested her head on Amanda's shoulder.

"I don't think she is going to last much longer." Amanda whispered.

"Should we still take her in?" He asked.

"We can and then leave after formally greeting Liam and the rest of the royal family." She reached over and slipped her hand in his. "Thank you."

He tightened his fingers around hers. "For what?"

Her eyes fell to the one in her arms. "For our girl. For coming and supporting this ancient tradition." She looked up at him, her heart shining in her eyes. "For giving me all I ever dreamed of."

He ignored the slight gasps from the nobles milling about while pressing a tender kiss to her lips. "I'm the one who should be thanking you." He whispered in her ear. He placed his hand under her elbow and proudly escorted his two loves into the ballroom
