Description

The title of the painting refers to a quotation from the Roman poet Ovid, who describes one of Venus’ attributes as being able to assist Roman women to turn their hearts towards virtue and modesty. This does seem somewhat contradictory for such a heavily sensual and sexual image, but perhaps it is a warning of the dangers of sexual obsession.

The painting is heavy in symbolism. Venus is surrounded by flowers, the roses represent love, while the honeysuckle symbolizes sexual desire and lust. The golden fruit may be seen as the fruit that tempted Eve and led to Adam’s downfall in the Garden of Eden. Alternatively, it may be interpreted as the Apple of Discord from the Greek myth of the Judgement of Paris. In both stories, the presence of a tempting fruit in the company of a beautiful women leads to the downfall and death of men.

Venus points Cupid’s arrow at her own breast to show how she will inflict its power over others. A blue bird in the top right corner foretells doom. The moths or butterflies drawn to the light of Venus’ halo, only to perish, illustrate the brevity of life. There is a golden aura around her head, her hair is long and flaming red. A hair colouring favoured by Rossetti, the other Pre-Raphaelites and their followers. Red hair was chosen because of its rarity, and associations with excessive emotions for example sexual desire.

Development: How did you come up with your character?

when I was playing i was like "lol a wannabe rockstar with stage fright is funny" and then i just kept picking the shy/attenion seeking options bc i was like "ohhhh i can make dante's life so so much worse on purpose >:)" bc i love making my little guys suffer and now i genuinely find the dynamic between dante and fame and dante and the rest of the band to be so interesting and more than a little sad

Voice: What does their singing voice sound like? Do you have voiceclaims(s) for them?

They have a very good voice!!! I picture them as a baritone with a pretty decent range-- they can sing a lot of the tenor range as well. their songs have a lot of runs and big "belting" moments bc they are very good at projecting and putting emotion into their voice (they could be on broadway if they wanted tbh). far as voiceclaims, I'm picturing eddie vedder from pearl jam, especially in the song "release".

Fame: Do you think your character will enjoy fame? Do they think they will? What elements do you think they might struggle with? Do you think they’ll be happy at the end of this road?

oh my god dante will hate fame so so much. they are very uncomfortable with both attention and praise (they are very insecure and can never make themselves believe the good things people say and always take the bad things people say very hard). as much as they love to sing and write music and as much as they frankly need it as a coping mechanism, they really hate being in the spotlight. they kinda wish they could just disappear into the music they sing. i picture them as pretty reluctant to actually take the band to the next level, but do so bc they know how much it means to everyone else and bc they are a pushover who can never say no

I think it is going to get a lot worse for them tbh. they are going to have a very messy relationship with g (and maybe victoria too, we'll see) that will put even more spotlight and scrutiny onto dante

honestly i really like the angst that comes from all of this but if there is an option at the end to walk away from fame i will probably pick that just so dante doest die of stress lol
