I hoped so hard that we would get an English license but I didn't think it would happen before Seven Seas (another north american publisher) published Faraway Wanderers or Tai Sui!!! 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺 I went through like ... The opposite of the five stages of grief when I saw the announcement a couple hours ago while at work. I was shocked, stunned, near shaking and near tears in disbelief and hope. I'm so EXCITED and cannot WAIT to see the art and to have these bad boys in my hands!!!

Silent Reading / Mo Du by Priest -- a brief review (no spoilers)

Novel length: 180 chapters + 5 extras

My Rating: ★★★★★ / 5

This series has to be one of my top fave books / series of all time. I legitimately think I could and would enjoy writing a lengthy thesis about it. It's a series that I enjoyed so much that I put off reading the last volume for MONTHS because I didn't want the series to end.

What kind of story is Silent Reading?

First and foremost this is a detective story. It involves police and politics, corruption and manipulation, wealthy overpowering the poor, and the list of potential trigger warnings for it is quite lengthy. There are some genuinely gruesome and upsetting content in the cases though most of it is seen afterwards and not experienced by the reader-- for example there's a scene where a girl encounters a killer but we don't see what happens and only find out about the aftermath as you read on.

This is also a story about love, friendship, trust, family, and relationships. The special investigation squad really feels like a found family and it is lovely to see them all working so hard to protect each other especially in the last volume when shit really hits the fan. There's positive and negative relationships of just about every kind. Some characters are close to their family and have a loving relationship while others despise or have trauma with theirs.

Finally it is a story covered and intertwined with theming and allusions. One of my favorite things about this series is how each book / volume is named after and related to another work of literature. I have not personally read all of them before but I admit I am curious to do so and return to Silent Reading and see how that changes my impression of things. Who are the main characters?

Without going into details here's a little bit about our main squad:

Fei Du - a rich young man with a traumatic past who is interested in psychology and has a keen analytical mind. He is incredibly intelligent and determined to figure everything out (from the cases to his repressed memories) with all he has even if it hurts himself in the process. He acts cold and calculating and is determined not to trust or let others too close.

Luo Wenzhou - the head of the special investigation squad, he appears carefree and lighthearted but cares so deeply. He wants to protect his little family of investigators no matter what. (He also has a cat named Luo Yiguo who is hilarious every time he shows up).

Tao Ran - deputy captain of the squad, he has strong big brother vibes. He's serious and kind and a good foil to the flippant and brash Luo Wenzhou. He's constantly shaking his head and hoping everyone can get along (at least for a little while).

Lang Qiao - part of the special investigation squad, she may not be as quick on analyzing the clues but she makes up for it by being decisive and taking action. (I really appreciated her not being fridged or a damsel -- in fact she often would rush into action and saved Xiao Haiyang a few times).

Xiao Haiyang -he starts out in another unit but gets transferred into the special investigation squad in the second book after having worked with them closely during the first book. He's new and has a lot to learn but his incredible memory helps him pick up on some clues that others have missed. His sense of righteousness is strong but his self preservation is weak.

What is the plot of Silent Reading?

Each volume revolves around a certain case that the special investigation squad and Fei Du find themselves wrapped up in. The characters and cases that they work on are complicated and nuanced, I felt a little like a detective myself as I would take notes while reading and try to piece together clues. This includes not only the current case but the little tidbits we would get about the main character's dark past and puzzling how it has affected him into who he is today as well as hints at a large scale conspiracy manipulated by some shadowy force that was directing the characters around to their whim. After reading each volume I would have a list of questions that I had generated that still remained and I hoped I would get more clues to in the next volume.

I also appreciated that the cases seemed to become more complicated and tangled as the series continued. Suspects and victims were not mutually exclusive, What seemed simple at first glance would be revealed to be a cover-up and the characters would pursue the loose strings and uncover what really happened.

Adaptations

Also there is a live action adaptation of the series called Justice in the Dark which is sadly caught up in legal issues. The first 8 episodes were aired and you can most likely find somewhere to watch them online just beware of malware when you search. The adaptation was actually the reason why I started reading the novels! I highly enjoyed the episodes that were released and while there are some differences between it and the source material it was honestly pretty minimal. I really liked the actors portrayals in particular that of Fei Du, Luo Wenzhou, and Tao Ran (even if the characters names were changed slightly).

(I believe there is also an audio drama and there was talk of a donghua in the works but I have not experienced either of them at this time.)

I'm not fully sure if this falls under trigger warnings but I'm going to put it here anyway. There's a few times where FD acts cheekily towards LWZ and LWZ alludes to 'punishing' FD with sex. I believe both characters are aware that this is meant as a form of teasing and play between them and if FD did not consent LWZ would not continue. They both know if FD teases LWZ to this extent that he's egging LWZ on purposefully and is consenting (sometimes this is an attempt to distract LWZ from asking FD questions that FD does not want to answer). Ultimately we know that LWZ wouldn't harm FD but I felt it was worth a mention.

This series also unfortunately falls into the trope of one male character always tops and the other always bottoms -- to the extent that when the bottom complains or suggests switching roles the top acts offended or like he doesn't hear the other. It's like some bullshit pride thing that pops up from time to time in gay media that the bottom is less masculine because he's on the receiving end. Personally I think LWZ would thoroughly enjoy any type of act with FD as long as FD was doing it with him. And that's not to say a person can't have preferences-- I just get frustrated when the tops act insulted at the mere thought or implication of being the one on the receiving end.

I've said it before, that Luo Binghe is somewhat of a baby's first introduction to a particular archetype of danmei love interest. In SVSSS MXTX is very careful with hinting at or touching upon unhinged things Luo Binghe could have done, without crossing any lines with the exception of the Maigu Ridge scene, though even then he had an out by not being in control of his actions due to the Xin Mo sword. Now that I've finished Jiang Chao Ge And The Spirit Weapon, I can say again that Shui Qian Cheng doesn't have such restraint.

The ML Zhi Xuan does pull a Luo Binghe, but in this case there is no Xin Mo or evil flower (2ha) that compels his actions, instead it's just the culmination of his flaws and insecurities that was established all throughout the story. And I do find it fascinating. SQC has such a preoccupation with writing her couples to be as fraught as they are even in a relatively less dog blood work like Jiang Chao Ge, as opposed to presenting a united front like in most danmei. The MC defeats his (kind of literal) inner demons by himself.

And yet that still doesn't cancel out the past 120 chapters of the mostly traditional romantic development. Like it's the opposite of a redemption arc. It's like the author injecting one final burst of Toxic Yaoi before we wrap up. And the fact that Zhi Xuan doesn't really face any consequences is fascinating. Am I unsatisfied? Ehh a little bit, like the fallout could have been fleshed out more but ultimately I'm fine with the ending. I've certainly read worse from this author in that department (cough, Wu Chang Jie).

Another side note, I once saw someone here describing Bingqiu as "unintentional grooming". Jiang Chao Ge while not being serious about it does do quite a bit of shota baiting, and does feature a side character actively expressing wanting to groom a 14 year old (wanting to wait until he's grown before he makes any major moves).

I'm loving the dry humor this novel has. Every shixiong and shidi and even the shizhun generation of Feng Huan sect is so unique. Plot-wise, I can't guess at all what's gonna happen next and each mystery is more interesting than the last. Also every time Fu Lan acts like an obedient little wife taking care of his husband-to-be Qi Yin (pretty sure Qi Yin is the wife here but I'm loving the role reversal lol), my heart is moved! They're so cute together.

Jun You Ji Fou (君有疾否) appreciation/audio drama songs translation post

A while ago someone reblogged a post I wrote on the danmei novel Jun You Ji Fou and asked if I like the novel and could talk more about it, but I was too busy to reply and I think they’ve deleted the reblog, which makes me sad :/ But anyway I do like the novel, it’s an engaging and emotional read. I like how the main characters Chu Mingyun and Su Shiyu, while both being ambitious politicians at the top of their game with a cold, ruthless, and calculating side, are really such hopeless romantics at heart. Su Shiyu loves Chu Mingyun silently and hopelessly without expecting anything in return, and Chu Mingyun thought that if only Su Shiyu had truly loved him, politics be damned and nothing else would really matter.

Jun You Ji Fou has a really good audio drama adaptation, and fans like to joke about the audio drama being a musical because there’re a lot of beautiful songs and soundtracks in it. I’ve translated two below, please enjoy:

Newest Danmei Titles Licensed for EN from Haitang

Not sure if everyone heard the news yet but there is a new publisher Haitang in the US — they're the US branch of their chinese branch Cherry Apple, and Cherry Apple has been around for more than 5 years and licensed and printed plenty of simplfied CN danmei novels. Cherry Apple JUST announced its closure after they've cleared all the printing of their current on-hand licenses and they're known for their amazing covers.

So while Haitang (US) hasn't announced a PO, they've definitely got the expertise in the printing side of things. Everyone's pretty excited for their covers, because Cherry Apple had it down pat like no one else did.

The translators they've announced for their officially announced releases have been fan translating pretty long, and judging from their follow list some of the translators you currently know may also be on the roster.

With more and more modern danmei getting licensed, while it's not guaranteed, I hope this will mark a shift in fandom to not just talk about ancient historical novels as what defines the genre. Like I get it, but the way fandom understands danmei as being a handful of novels by a few authors in the same 3 genres or so, do people honestly not find it limiting. Well I do. I find it limiting.

Things are getting licensed fast enough that keeping a list like this up-to-date is basically impossible, but I saw someone asking in the tags so I figured I'd try. All titles are danmei unless otherwise noted (very little baihe is licensed so far). These titles are in various stages of publication, from "entire series released" to "license literally announced less than a week ago." As far as I know, all Seven Seas titles are available world-wide, through major distributors and libraries, and in e-book and print formats. Seven Seas translation quality varies but the editing is general strong and the editions are sturdy and nice. Note that Seven Seas isn't without controversy, especially for treating their contractors poorly resulting in them unionizing. Some people have also been unhappy with the fidelity of their translations compared to the original Chinese (I've been satisfied personally but ymmv).

Rosmei licenses are Singapore distribution rights only. There is a list of international partners organizing group orders here. I've personally placed my orders through Yiggybean, as discussed in reply to this ask. Most of these titles are only being released as print editions, tho titles that weren't originally on JJWXC (of which there are several here) WILL have e-book editions. My first book from Rosmei arrived, and I found the translation and editing to be very strong. I can't speak to how accurate it may be to the Chinese original, but it read smoothly and had very few errors. Overall, though they've made some mistakes, they've been communicative and responsive.
