Have You Read This Web Novel?

At eighteen years old, Lin Qingyu was married as part of a Chong Xi into the Nan’an Hou Mansion, becoming the ill Lu Wancheng’s male wife. On the eve of their wedding, Young Master Hou lay lazily on the bed and said, “Beauty, to be honest, I really don’t want to engage in domestic struggles. I just want to drift along, eat and wait to die. I want to be a Salted Fish.” A year later, Young Master Hou became gravely ill. He took Lin Qingyu’s hand and sighed, “Wife, I’m going to die, but I think I can continue to transmigrate. In order for you to properly recognize me in the future, let us set a secret code.” After the death of Young Master Hou, Lin Qingyu was prepared to stay a widow all his life. Lin Qingyu would rather die than remarry. Unexpectedly, after only 1/2 a year, …xoxo… actually came to propose marriage & said “If odd, change; if even, remain the same?” LQ: “…I will marry you.” After two years … Lin Qingyu knew that although his husband was a bag of lazybones, no one was his equal (Summary reduced to avoid spoiler) - Novel Updates

[Review]三嫁咸鱼Thrice married to a salted fish
Title: 三嫁咸鱼 Thrice married to a salted fish
Author: 比卡比
Length: 119 chapters + 28 extras
Tag: Historical, politics, arranged marriage, palace drama, transmigration
Summary (taken from NU):
At eighteen years old, Lin Qingyu was married as part of a Chong Xi into the Nan’an Hou Mansion, becoming the ill Lu Wancheng’s male wife.
On the eve of their wedding, Young Master Hou lay lazily on the bed and said, “Beauty, to be honest, I really don’t want to engage in domestic struggles. I just want to drift along, eat and wait to die. I want to be a Salted Fish.”
A year later, Young Master Hou became gravely ill. He took Lin Qingyu’s hand and sighed, “Wife, I’m going to die, but I think I can continue to transmigrate. In order for you to properly recognize me in the future, let us set a secret code.”
After the death of Young Master Hou, Lin Qingyu was prepared to stay a widow all his life. Lin Qingyu would rather die than remarry.
Unexpectedly, after only 1/2 a year, …xoxo… actually came to propose marriage & said “If odd, change; if even, remain the same?” LQ: “…I will marry you.”
After two years …
Lin Qingyu knew that although his husband was a bag of lazybones, no one was his equal.
Novel | Novel[translated] | Audio drama
Comments **contain spoiler**
Lin Qingyu aspired to be a doctor, but was forced into an arranged marriage with a sickly young master under the Imperial Decree. However, their marriage was short-lived. After the young master died, he married a General, who seemed suspiciously familiar. The marriage didn’t last long either as the General died in war. Finally, he married the young Emperor who was said to have lost his soul since young. As it turns out, all these people shared the same soul of Jiang Xing, who had transmigrated into the novel’s various characters.
This is such a refreshing take on the whole transmigration trope. Usually the MC (i.e., generally the shou) is the transmigrator, but now we have the ML (i.e., the gong) being the one transmigrating. Not only that, Jiang Xing transmigrated between several characters in the same universe, which is uncommon in transmigration novels. Together with Lin Qingyu, the main couple had to carefully orchestrate their re-marriages, given that it was frowned upon for a ‘widow’ to marry another man so soon after their husband’s death. I love the sprinkle of angst in between each death and the hurdles that Jiang Xing has to overcome to win back his ‘wife’ while acting out the roles of different characters (despite being a lazy ‘salted fish’).
Another thing I find refreshing is the morally grey characterization of the main couple. Lin Qingyu is known for his ruthlessness in taking revenge on people who have wronged him - even those who looked at him slightly perversely. Jiang Xing is absolutely in love with this side of Lin Qingyu and encourages the other in doing all sorts of bad things. I find myself enjoying the lengths that the both of them would go to to dispose of antagonists who challenge their relationship. That being said, I find that the other characters tend to be a bit bland in terms of their personalities, as they are mainly used as chess pieces in the main couple’s schemes.
Plot-wise there are a bit of twists and turns, which is expected of an Imperial drama-based novel. I respect how authors writing this genre can work with so many subplots and eventually tie the characters together.
Now while I mention that this is a transmigration novel, I would say that the transmigration aspect is rather sidelined by all the politics. In fact, Lin Qingyu seems to readily accept that he is simply a side character in a novel and that his original plot involves him dying in the palace. So I would suggest mainly reading this for the politics and drama, rather than focusing on the mechanics of the transmigration.

Songs stuck in my head (2023 Q3)

(^ω^)the music we got for Spring/Summer 2023 audiodrama season has been amazing

相思续续入梦来/"Thoughts and memories entering my dreams" by 远皓ZIL
[三嫁咸鱼/Thrice Married to Salted Fish , Season 1]
The music and lyrics of this song perfectly balances the blend of humor and heart in this story. The verse starts off kind of cheeky, but the emotions mount as we build towards the chorus. That line about Lin Qingyu donning his wedding robes again -- a scene that made me weep while reading the novel -- is like a punch to the gut. Thankfully the song and the story ends on a happy note.

山月随舟/"The world that follows" by 大C
[残疾战神嫁我为妾后/After the Disabled God of War Became My Concubine]
This is supposed to be about a maimed war hero biding his time to take revenge on the unscrupulous enemy prince he is forced to marry, but thankfully the real story is better represented by this sweet ballad. Despite the trials and chaos of the main characters' circumstances, they find a kindred spirit in each other and a promise to build a peaceful life together after the war is over.

真情错给/ "True love given in error" by 匀子, 漆柚
[泾渭无间/Clear and Muddy Loss of Love, Season 1]
This heartbreaking duet is attempting the impossible: to capture the emotional devastation of this epic novel in just a few minutes. "Love/ falls into a drop of tear, there is no one to blame, but me who has given my true love in error." A heartfelt love has crumbled into the cruelest betrayal, but instead of anger, there is just sadness, longing, and helplessness.

随月/"Follow the moon" by 海疼er
[游龙随月/You Long Sui Yue (both seasons) ]
I love this song so much that every time I hear it I instantly forgive the parts of the audiodrama that I enjoyed less. The lyrics tell a story of meeting and getting to know someone with whom you can share the rest of your journeys and your life. It sounds like a theme song for a wuxia drama, the song that should be playing while they ride off onto their next adventure together.

直到黎明/"Until Dawn" by 文森
[诟病/Morbid Attachment]
I'm still torn between feeling like this song is a bit too raw and under-produced, or breathtakingly intimate with its focus on the main vocals. It's written for a lost lover whose name is hidden in the lyrics and melody, a lover who doesn't know or believe in this, even though a part of him desperately wants to. This song is filled with the regret and yearning that comes out of such a relationship, vulnerable but hopeful.

心眼 (主役版) /"Eye of the mind" (cast version) by 陈张太康, 文森
[心眼/Eye of the Mind, Season 2]
This duet featuring two of my favorite voice actors is basically fulfilling one of my CV fandom dreams. Their voices work so well together! The calm, modern sound of the song perfectly sets the mood for the journeys of (relatively) ordinary people who manage to have some incredible drama.

三嫁咸鱼 (San Jia Xian Yu / Thrice Married to Salted Fish) Audio Drama S2 Theme Song: Three Wishes 《三愿》 Sanyuan - Lyrics (English Translation)
Posted in celebration of Lin Qingyu's birthday (11th day of the 3rd lunar month)! English translation of Three Wishes 《三愿》 Sanyuan, the lyrics of the insert song from 三嫁咸鱼 (San Jia Xian Yu / Thrice Married to Salted Fish), the audio drama on Miss Evan based on the novel of the same name by 比卡比 Bi Ka Bi.
Chinese/Pinyin/English lyrics available under the cut.
(Credits: 广播剧 《三嫁咸鱼》 第二季 by 边江工作室 on Miss Evan FM. It is accessible via the hyperlink for the audio track above. I own nothing but the translation of the lyrics and the translation notes.)

Who will walk with me, Sharing the same thoughts even thousands of Li [1] apart, (As if) in the same boat amidst the winds and the rains? Always gazing coldly upon the people who busy themselves over their numerous mortal obsessions.

Since he’s the person who knows me best, He sees through my feelings and thoughts, and thus knows my natural apathy. I’ve never been one to believe in fate, instead letting karma take its course, But it’s because I’ve been moved by him that my fateful ending has been quietly rewritten.

How do we live freely throughout our days? The red thread of fate secretly ties itself to us. We raise a toast, promising to reunite without wasting a moment more.
[chorus]

I wish for us to be like swallows on the beam—inseparable all the years round. As snowflakes descend in the gap between our worlds, I convey my feelings as I send you off. Like love and desire in life and death, (You are) as transient as a passing cloud etched into (my) bones, Dissipating as the sun sets, only to re-emerge as the sun rises again [2]; In the yard, the peach blossoms have bloomed.

Even if the days and the months fly by like arrows, Sending us on our way along the cycle of our mortal lifetimes, I will go with you, be it to ascend the high heavens or to chase the ends of the earth wielding swords. -----------------------------♪♪♪------------------------------
Translation notes:
[1] 1 Li = 0.5km = 0.311 miles.
[2] I’ve presumed that these lines are in Qingyu’s perspective, with a possible Buddhist basis in describing Jiang Xing (i.e., all versions of him) as ‘love and desire in life and death’, since desires (e.g., for one’s lover) are thought to be transient mortal needs. This is expounded further in the next line: ‘You are as transient as a passing cloud etched into (my) bones’. The ‘passing cloud’ bit was inferred from 云烟 (cloud smoke), which could be used to metaphorically mean ‘transient entity’ (as smoke disappears rapidly). It was inferred on the basis of the SJXY plot where JX always visits for a short time in each of his instantiations/lifetimes, yet leaves the deepest impression on Qingyu (as if to ‘etch’ himself ‘into his bones’).
[3] This line seems to be a play on a famous idiom 士为知己者死,女为悦己者容, translated as “true gentlemen sacrifice their lives for his confidants, just like how women beautify themselves to please their love”. In the song, it’s subverted as 士为知己容 “true gentlemen beautify themselves for their love”, which then makes sense in view of the next sentence, “we’ll never grow weary of (looking at) each other”. Perhaps this could be a somewhat humorous way of saying “we will delight each other with our presence” (metaphorized from “we will beautify ourselves for each other”).
[4] This translation involves subjective interpretation and liberties taken in terms of wording. Criticisms/alternative readings welcome anytime! Thank you for reading. <3

Jiang Xing drops the radishes he was peeling and runs out into the yard. There is a man lying face-down on the bank of the pond, with his trunk and legs submerged in the water: and from where Jiang Xing stands, he cannot be certain that the man is breathing.
