Sex Education (Final season)
Tumblr media
TV Shows/Dramas watched in 2023
Sex Education (Final season, 2023, UK)
Creator: Laurie Nunn
Directors: Dominic Leclerc, Michelle Savill & Alyssa McClelland
Mini-review:
Wow, it feels kinda weird knowing that we won't be seeing these characters again. This final season wasn't perfect, but it wrapped everything in a way that felt absolutely satisfying for me. Yes, I know some fans are very angry about certain things, but I dunno, it all felt completely true to the characters, something that is always key for a finale. If anything, my biggest complaint is that the show clearly struggles when it comes to handling and connecting so many characters and storylines. That already happened during the previous season, but I think the show's team had an even harder time with this one, because they needed to provide some form of closure for everybody. Anyway, I expected it to happen, so I got over it pretty quickly. I want to end this review by reminding everyone of how groundbreaking this show is. It basically set new standards when it comes to inclusivity and representation in mainstream television. Although it only premiered four years ago, its impact on the industry has already been incredible and undeniable. So, yeah, this was a flawed but satisfying final season, and Sex Education will be deeply missed.

Yakuza, Oxbow, & Sybris Live Show Review: 2/25, Thalia Hall, Chicago
Tumblr media
Yakuza's Jerome Marshall & Bruce Lamont
BY JORDAN MAINZER
For two Chicago bands, Sunday night was all about reflection. First and foremost, local metal legends Yakuza were there to celebrate 25 years of existence. They first caught the eyes and ears of listeners with their independently released debut album Amount to Nothing before signing to a label for 2002's Way of the Dead, an album that truly introduced them as a hard rock band with elements of avant-garde and jazz. On Yakuza records, folks like Ken Vandermark and Fred Lonberg-Holm would rub elbows with members of Mastodon; founding member Bruce Lamont, the lead singer and saxophonist/clarinetist, was the tying thread between the musical worlds. Yakuza steadily released records for the next 10 years before taking a decade-long break, while Lamont would stay active, playing saxophone, participating in bands like Bloodiest and Corrections House, and tending bar at Empty Bottle. Finally, last year, Yakuza picked up where they left off with Sutra (Svart), a record that again dipped its toes into seemingly disparate genres--thrash, prog, free jazz--and managed to churn out a cohesive stew.

Sunday night, the Sutra songs sounded among the best, standing tall with Yakuza's back catalog. Set opener "Capricorn Rising" gradually built into a chug, Lamont alternating between sax flourishes and a chanted vocal. Matt McClelland's brawny guitar carried "Burn Before Reading". In general, the rhythm section--bassist Jerome Marshall and drummer James Staffel--provided steadily swirling noise to contrast the unpredictability of McClelland's riffs and Lamont's incantations. Perhaps the most moving moment of the night was when Lamont, visibly choked up, dedicated a song to the late Mars Williams, a fellow Chicago area journeyman saxophonist who passed away late last year.

Sybris' Shaun Podgurski and Angela Mullenhour
Speaking of decades of inactivity, how about Sybris? The local stalwarts, who have released only two records, 2005's self-titled LP and 2008's Into the Trees, played their first Chicago show in 10 years last summer and are now gearing up to release their long-shelved third album Gold on Hold (Absolutely Kosher), recorded in 2011. It's very easy to play "what if?" with the four-piece, as their unique mix of epic, feelings-heavy indie rock and nervy rhythms could have seen them further soar among beloved sounds and bands of the 2010s: the early 2010s emo revival, the late 2010s post-punk revival, Screaming Females, and Hop Along, to name a few. On Sunday, they primed the passionate crowd with clear old favorites, like the jagged "Hurt Hawk", country-tinged burner "Burnout Babies", slow love song "Blame It On The Baseball", and the thunderous "Something About A Darkhorse Or Whatever". As if to whet our appetites for what's to come, they ended their set with two Gold on Hold tracks: the unreleased "Dance" and driving album opener "Watermelon". For music fans all over the globe, Gold on Hold should be one of the more anticipated upcoming releases of the remaining year.

From left to right: Oxbow's Dan Adams, Eugene Robinson, Greg Davis, & Niko Wenner
In between the two Windy City phoenixes? None other than San Francisco experimentalists Oxbow, who used the most of their 40-minute set, not limiting the sensory experiences and media to just music. Indeed, for five-plus minutes, they played a short film, whose images, sound-tracked by a droning instrumental, repeatedly cut to black, as if they were pulsating. All this time, they were burning incense. When guitarist/keyboardist Niko Wenner, bassist Dan Adams, and drummer Greg Davis finally entered the stage, they launched into the pseudo funk of Thin Black Duke highlight "A Gentleman's Gentleman". Eventually, vocalist Eugene Robinson sauntered on and did what he does: screech and wail devastating lyrics, his voice raw as hell, and expressively dance and convulse. Similar to Yakuza, Oxbow's most recent songs, from last year's Love's Holiday (Ipecac), sounded the most fresh and urgent: "The Night the Room Started Burning", "Icy White & Crystalline", and "Lovely Murk". The album version of the last one features Kristin Hayter, who Robinson made sure to mention was not there but is playing Thalia Hall in a couple months. Nonetheless, Wenner admirably filled in, emulating her soulful vocal turn. And the band took time to remember another experimental genius and collaborator who passed last year, Peter Brötzmann, but made sure to take advantage of Lamont's saxophone prowess, having him fill in on tempo-changing freak-out "Cat and Mouse". (Though "Cat and Mouse" was released on their sophomore album King of the Jews, their live version with Brötzmann has become well known.) While the three bands who played on Sunday might have constituted an odd group on paper, all share one of the preeminent qualities of good performers: unbridled passion.

Ween Return to New York City for Two Shows at Terminal 5 This Weekend
We can glean from their history that the band Ween was founded by teens Gene and Dean Ween around 19 … 84. Real names Aaron Freeman and Mickey Melchiondo, respectively, the two met in middle school and began making home recordings together, harnessing all the energy that comes with being weird teenagers on drugs and creating some truly out-there jams. According to the group’s own lore, they were “sprouted from the demon-god Boognish,” a caricature you may recognize from Ween’s logo that demanded they form an alt-rock band together. “Start liking them now [for one day] you will get down on your filthy knees and crawl to the altar that is Ween,” said Henry Rollins at a 1990 show in Trenton, N.J. This advice was prescient. In the decades since, Ween’s music has become its own little bizarro universe, compiling a massive discography that spans genres, decades and subject material, unified only by its hard to define Ween-esque quirkiness that’s been a part of the band from the beginning. They’ve attracted a cult following that would love to live in this Ween universe. The late great SpongeBob SquarePants creator Stephen Hillenburg cites their album The Mollusk (stream it here) as a huge inspiration for his show, with Ween returning the love years later by recording the song “Loop de Loop,” featured in the episode about how to tie your shoes. No Ween, perhaps no SpongeBob, and it’s grim to imagine such a mundane world without either. By 2011, Ween appeared to have broken up for good, with Freeman announcing he was retiring as Gene Ween and Melchiondo stating that this news was a total surprise to him. Freeman later revealed that Ween was put on hiatus in his efforts to stay clean after battling past addiction issues.
Luckily for their rabid fans, the band reunited in 2015 for a series of sold-out shows in Colorado. And now, Ween return to Terminal 5 this weekend for a pair of shows—Friday and Saturday (which is already sold out)—and an opportunity to, in the words of Henry Rollins: “Crawl to the altar that is Ween.” —Dan Rickershauser | @D4nRicks

Faktor Lingkungan
"The people you habitually associate with called your reference group determine as much as 95 percent of your success or failure in life".
- David C McClelland
Of couse, it has a hug e consequences.
The dream in your heart may be bigger than the environment in which you find yourself. Sometimes you have to get out of that environment to see that dream fulfilled.

It’s Great Lakes Awareness Day!
Do you know a lot about the Great Lakes? Do you know nothing at all? Either way, I’m here to help!
I’ve updated my resources page (link here) to include some new books I’ve read and used for my capstone project. I’ve read each of these books, and I highly recommend you do too! (I’ve also put the list below for those on mobile)
Great Lakes Now also has a section to help educate students about the Great Lakes. While it’s written for grades 5-8, it’s great for anyone who wants to learn more about the Lakes!
I’ll stop here, otherwise this post would be pages long. I have a lot of information about the Great Lakes to share, so make sure to hit me up with any questions and to check back every few days for some more Great Lakes appreciation!
-olivia :)
For those on mobile, here’s the list of books:
The Late, Great Lakes: An Environmental History - William Ashworth (1987)
Permeable Border: The Great Lakes Basin as Transnational Region, 1650-1990 - John Bukowczyk, Nora Faires, David Smith, and Randy Widdis (2005)
The Death and Life of the Great Lakes - Dan Egan (2017)
The Third Coast: Sailors, Strippers, Fishermen, Folksingers, Long-Haired Ojibway Painters, and God-Save-the-Queen Monarchists of the Great Lakes - Ted McClelland (2008)
Water without Borders?: Canada, the United States, and Shared Waters - Emma S. Norman, Alice Cohen, and Karen Bakker (editors) (2013)

Modelo TRACE
Tumblr media

Ke-kepo-an saya termasuk tingkat akut.
“Pak, karyawan sini suka dikasih reward to?”
“Iya dek, sebagai bentuk apresiasi aja, kan mereka udah bekerja keras buat perusahaan ini. Kalo bukan kita ya siapa lagi?”
“Lah nanti rugi dong pak, kalo setiap karyawan dikasih reward?”
“Nggak lah, kan udah diperhitungkan dengan matang”
“Kalo nggak ada peningkatan gimana pak? Misal dapet kerugian gitu?”

Dan Robbins Dan Robbins recommended that Palmer's first paint-by-number pack be a unique painting rendered in the cubist style spearheaded by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. It later demonstrated that grown-up customers pulled in to the by-the-numbers idea abhorred unique organizations, favoring the story authenticity of Fishermen, Mt. Matterhorn, Latin Figures, and The Bullfighter.
youtube
Deals Scene Sales of paint-by-number packs took off on the West Coast in 1951. In this San Francisco scene, one assistant renews deals stock, while another exhibits the by-the-numbers method for a horde of inquisitive spectators.
English Consumer Brochure Branching out to business sectors in Canada, England, France, Germany, Italy, and Norway in the mid 1950s, Palmer Paint custom fitted paint-by-number subjects to national tastes. This flyer marketing Craft Master packs in England, for instance, includes Shakespeare's origin and Ann Hathaway's Included in her show at Team Gallery this fall were three models from another arrangement of works of art titled "Perfect Proportions" (2013), all consolidating arrangements of estimations, in inches. As sketchily painted words demonstrate, they are the outlines of arms, chest, midsection, thighs and calves—explicitly, however this isn't explained in the canvases, those of expert jocks.
The 7-by-12-foot diptych Phil "The Gift" and Jay "Cuts," for instance, highlights insights for the present contenders Phil Heath and Jay Cutler. In the left board, a section of numbers in blazing pink takes off up toward the right, the names of body parts they measure spreading out close by like a pennant. To one side is a hardened pool of squeamishly drab polymer medium; McClelland is inclined toward off-name employments of paint's parts. In this current diptych's restricting board, a rundown of numbers, in dark, drops down a chasm of marbled jade-green; above it is a bright blasted of little painted gold air pockets. For these works, McClelland has utilized representation cloth, its fine string and tight weave delivering a hard, smooth surface on which liquids will in general buoy and dry shades disperse; among alternate mediums in play are gesso, oil paint and charcoal.
Tumblr media
In Frank "The Chemist," what resembles a shower of coal dust shows up beneath a tumble of numbers, these the estimations of weight lifter Frank Zane.
A bunch of little, sporadic, dark rimmed circles that bring out projectile gaps are dispersed all over, tactfully evil. Increasingly benevolent are black out numerals apparently scratched into a puddle of polymer medium, an inspiration of finger painting that brings the expression "advanced work of art" to mind. Perusing plays on words into this work is, indeed, invited by McClelland, who recognizes that the "Perfect Proportions" arrangement establishes a type of figure drawing, with "figure" intended to be perused no less than two different ways. 1 She brings up that in working out rivalries—which include flexing appendages and striking stances, not lifting loads—hopefuls are made a decision by their agile advances starting with one position then onto the next, and, eminently, by their muscles' definition and structure, the last criteria additionally pertinent to conventional figure painting (which McClelland contemplated as an undergrad, at the University of Michigan).
