today’s song is .. The Mollusk - Ween, from the 1997 album ‘The Mollusk’ ! :D
you know when you wish a song had a 10 minute long extended version? yea. this is that song for me.
the mollusk is an airy and wondrous song (yes wondrous) about a boy who finds a mollusk on a beach and is encapsulated by the wonder of it. mollusks are basically shellfish - they have soft unsegmented bodies underneath hard shells - so think snails, clams, oysters, etc. when i think of a mollusk, i think of an ammonite in particular.
i’ve been thinking a lot about spirals lately and how they connect us to the world around us. they’re a natural pattern that so many elements of nature easily follow: spiral galaxies, waves, a curled fist, the way an insect curls into itself, the foetus position, the way growing plants curl their way around anything they can find to keep balance, and of course, the extinct mollusk, the ammonite.
as this lyric puts it: “let’s be forever, let forever be free”
the mollusk is forever and we are ever changing and nature pervades and persists time and time again
