Sex Education (Final season)
TV Shows/Dramas watched in 2023
Sex Education (Final season, 2023, UK)
Creator: Laurie Nunn
Directors: Dominic Leclerc, Michelle Savill & Alyssa McClelland
Mini-review:
Wow, it feels kinda weird knowing that we won't be seeing these characters again. This final season wasn't perfect, but it wrapped everything in a way that felt absolutely satisfying for me. Yes, I know some fans are very angry about certain things, but I dunno, it all felt completely true to the characters, something that is always key for a finale. If anything, my biggest complaint is that the show clearly struggles when it comes to handling and connecting so many characters and storylines. That already happened during the previous season, but I think the show's team had an even harder time with this one, because they needed to provide some form of closure for everybody. Anyway, I expected it to happen, so I got over it pretty quickly. I want to end this review by reminding everyone of how groundbreaking this show is. It basically set new standards when it comes to inclusivity and representation in mainstream television. Although it only premiered four years ago, its impact on the industry has already been incredible and undeniable. So, yeah, this was a flawed but satisfying final season, and Sex Education will be deeply missed.

Millie Lies Low Review- A Movie That Deals With An Ailment A Lot of People Can Relate Too
There have been a handful or maybe more films where a character has a good life or has the potential for a good life when things start to unravel for them. That’s the case with Millie Lies Low. A New Zealand film just came out here in the States. More often than not it’s a man going through these types of situations. In this movie, it’s a young Kiwi woman who has these issues. Millie (Ana…

In the age when Savile Row was synonymous with men’s style, an innovative Italian, Gaetano Savini, put his country on the map, forever reinventing menswear. From the first men’s fashion show at Florence’s Palazzo Pitti in 1952 to his craftsmanship influences still evident in today’s styles, Savini was truly a creator on the cutting edge. His legacy as the visionary and designer extraordinaire behind the Brioni luxury brand is celebrated in this spectacular illustrated edition. Highlighting examples of Savini’s innovative cuts, bold colors, and the psychedelic patterns that led the Peacock Revolution of the 1960s, The Man Who Was Brioni includes sketches and newspaper articles illustrating how the man became the legend. Replete with letters, photographs, and personal anecdotes from Savini’s daughter and Brioni heir, this volume details the brand’s far-reaching influence, and how it came to be known as “the Dior of menswear.”

Persuasion
Adaptions from 1971, 1995, 2007, 2022
The sixth of Jane Austen’s novels, first published in 1817, posthumously, has had many adaptions over the years. The ones pictures above are detailed below:

Persuasion (2022 Film)
While made for Netflix, this film was first released in US theaters The film departs from the original novel in some points (a lot in tone)
Written by Ronald Bass & Alice Victoria Winslow, directed by Carrie Cracknell
Starring Dakota Johnson as Anne Elliot, Cosmo Jarvis as Capt. Frederick Wentworth, Henry Golding as Mr. William Elliot, Mia McKenna-Bruce as Mary Musgrove (née Elliot), Richard E. Grant as Sir Walter Elliot, Nikki Amuka-Bird as Lady Russell, Agni Scott as Mrs. Sophia Croft, among others
*****
I’m not big on Persuasion but I prefer the 2007 version myself. Then 1995. I also like 2022, but it feels different.

Little Black Classics Box Set, pt 1
Not "fanfic", but… I came across the "Little Black Classics Box Set" published by Penguin Random House recently, and the list of books looked great! $140 for 80 books is also fantastic, even when they're mostly novellas. A lot of it looked like stuff I wanted to read.
It was also all mostly in the public domain, too. So I figured that I could just find most of it on gutenberg or another archive, legally and for free!
Below the cut is the list of books in the collection, as well as where to find them online:
A Cup of Sake Beneath the Cherry Trees by Kenko - Excerpt from "Tsurezuregusa" (Essays in Idleness). Original Japanese English translation (labelled "The Miscellany of a Japanese Priest: Being a Translation of Tsure-Zure Gusa")
A Hippo Banquet by Mary Kingsley - Excerpt from "Travels in West Africa"
A Modest Proposal by Jonathan Swift - Gutenberg
A Pair of Silk Stockings by Kate Chopin - Excerpt from "The Awakening"

"Millie Lies Low"
A complex film about humiliation, shame, and the very human desire to cover up our mistakes.
Shame and the desire to project an image of something you’re not is at the heart of “Millie Lies Low,” a sad but fully relatable film from director and co-writer Michelle Savill. It’s a small-scale story that confronts psychologically dark themes with compassion and honesty, even if it’s uncomfortable for the viewer to watch as the likeable protagonist continues to dig a deeper hole for herself…

JEAN DUJARDIN, ICON OF IMPERMANENCE
by Réginald-Jérôme de Mans
There’s a fantastic new podcast Kill James Bond! providing a critical eye on the tired old cliché and media it inspired, from the Ennio Morricone-scored, Neil Connery-starring Operation Kid Brother to apparent #wifeguy Michel Hazanavicius’ revisionist French takes on the Bond also-ran OSS 117. Something clicked hearing the hosts discuss the joy the hero of the latter, Jean Dujardin’s entitled, thoughtless Hubert Bonisseur de la Bath, takes in simple moments and simple experiences. Joys typically filled with double entendres, like having his biscuit buttered or getting oiled up, as well as those that provided novel thrills for a 1950s character, such as taking an airplane… or, for a dandy, getting a chance to wear his new alpaca tuxedo.
Anyone reading this has probably secretly had similar moments, moments that you can’t share with a partner, of finding the perfect occasion, the perfect excuse for being able to display a fanciful indulgence. And, along with other fanciful details of old 1950s and 1960s spy movies like rear-projected driving scenes and blue-filtered day-for-nights, the makers of OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies brought back the old tradition of having the hero’s suits made by a reputable tailor. Sean Connery and Patrick McGoohan had Savile Row tailor Anthony Sinclair, Cary Grant had a slew of Internet bores attempting to decipher a maker’s label in North by Northwest, and Dujardin’s spy had Jo Kergoat, renowned Paris tailor and protégé of none other than André Bardot, a founding member of the Groupe des Cinq of French custom tailors, the circle of prestigious 1950s tailors who shaped what French tailoring is today.
What is today? As tailored by Kergoat (who made 47 suits for the movie), Dujardin is a perfect French parody of Sean Connery, immaculately dressed in elegant detail – far better, for instance, than Daniel Craig ever has been as James Bond. Dujardin has reprised the role twice, once in 2009’s OSS 117: Lost in Rio, and now in OSS 117: Red Alert in Black Africa, which is slated to come out around the same time as the oft-delayed Bond film No Time to Die. In the meantime, during the long uncertainty of the pandemic, Jo Kergoat, who has previously raved that “everything’s going to hell and soon there won’t be a single real tailor in Paris," has helped fulfill his own prophecy and hung up his shears, at 91.
Hazanavicius and Dujardin have worked on other projects together, including the prominently Oscar-ed The Artist. Another period piece, it also featured the unusual attention to detail of French bespoke crafted clothing for Dujardin, this time from the custom tailor and shirtmaker at Lanvin, the oldest continuously existing French fashion house. Such a step was coherent with Dujardin’s role, a silent film star confronted with the new age of Hollywood talkies, in an age where studio systems practically required stars to maintain the same care in their off-camera appearance as in their highly orchestrated films. Not only was Lanvin one of Paris’ oldest couture houses, but with its men’s custom business founded in 1926 (in magnificent Art Deco premises decorated by Armand-Albert Rateau), it was one of the old guard of established French tailors, mostly forgotten names like Cristiani, Larsen, Knize and Creed (yes, the overhyped perfumers of today were once custom tailors to none other than the Shah of Iran, among others). An old guard against whom Bardot’s Groupe des Cinq had rebelled around the time that the action in the first OSS 117 movie takes place, because those five tailors (Socrate, Waltener, Camps, Bardot and di Nota) had wanted to show more progressive designs, back when prestigious custom tailors could set fashion because they dressed men of fashion, rather than being the isolated, crumbling redoubts they are today. And Lanvin itself lost its own such redoubt, after just under a century as one of the best, tailor and shirtmaker in the world, in the last year after the actual people responsible for such craft fled to the relative safety of Francesco Smalto… a tailoring house founded, ironically, by one of the alumni of the Groupe des Cinq.
It cannot be too coincidental that those two absurdly well-dressed, well-tailored roles make Dujardin confront periods of uncertain transition: his silent matinee idol facing the advent of films with sound and a whole new style of acting, and OSS 117, he who acts out all of the things 007 elides, like the need to carefully remove his custom suit jacket, shoes and cufflinks before jumping into bed with the femme fatale du jour, faced with the disintegration of colonial empires, of the illusion of France as a great power. In a way, Hubert Bonisseur de la Bath is Eurocentrism himself, forced to encounter other cultures as they shrug off imperialism (in the case of his first film, through the Suez crisis that destroyed British and French pretenses of power), as all of the absolutes that composed his worldview break down. So indeed the tailors and shirtmakers that made him. One can no longer take the joys of an alpaca tuxedo for granted, no matter how elegant one momentarily looked in it.

Kingsman: The Secret Service's Timeline Doesn't Make Sense- Part 2
And here we go folks, the payoff of my insanity. The culmination of spending over 3 hours watching the same few scenes over and over again.
By the way, I really only started going down this rabbit hole because I needed a general idea of the months the movie takes place in. Not the hours. Not even the days. Just the months... But then I guess something snapped and I went crazy.
Aaaaaanyway...
It's V-Day, BAE-BEE!
Day 3 (Dawn of The Final Day)- Sunday, June 22nd 2014
Here we have my most solid proof that this all goes down within the same. Weekend.
The Church scene.
South Glade Mission Church is an expy of Westboro Baptist Church, so we can assume that the sermon takes place on a Baptist church's schedule. 10:00 am, which thanks to time zones is 3:00 pm in England.
When the audience sees Eggsy watching Harry's feed, he's still wearing the same clothes so... He apparently just hung around Harry's house from the time of the argument at 7:00 pm to 3:00 pm the next day? Whatever floats his boat, personally I would have GTFO myself. Did he even sleep? I don't think he did, or we're not supposed to think he did because Eggsy looks tired.
Harry sits through at least a portion of the sermon before the, "Catholic whore." speech. We'll say it took about 15 minutes for him to confirm Valentine wasn't at the church and decide that he just couldn't stand to hear anymore of the sermon. That puts us at around 10:15 am EST when the infamous Church scene goes down.
By 10:30 am EST, or 3:30 pm UTC, Harry is shot in the head. Prompting Eggsy, who had been watching the whole thing, to go to the tailor shop and inform Arthur.
Here's more proof that I put way too much thought into this, like you needed any at this point. I know that in the best traffic, it would take a little under 15 minutes to get from Harry's house in Stanhope Mews S, South Kensington, to Savile Row where Kingsman Tailor shop is.
Then you get the whole scene where Arthur tries to kill Eggsy but is tricked into killing himself. We'll say it's another 15 minutes for simplicity's sake. And right as Eggsy is cutting the chip out of his neck, Arthur's phone starts the 6 hour countdown to V-Day and provides coordinates to his bunker. The coordinates apparently actually lead to a field in Russia while the bunker is clearly in some mountains, by the way. And if you're keeping track, that puts V-Day at starting at 10:00 pm in England.
Eggsy and Merlin arrive at the bunker when the countdown is at just under an hour.
Despite their best efforts and Valentines, V-Day starts at about the time it was scheduled for.
And we finally arrive at how I know the movie's timeline is very wrong. Because it's supposed to be 10:00 pm in London, that is the only way for everything that's come before this to have had time to take place.
But when we see it start in England, and more specifically we see Michelle Unwin trying to kill her daughter, it's still. Clearly. Daylight outside.
In Conclusion
And there we have it. The entire thing from start to finish. If anyone wants, I could even provide time codes for all of my proof.
So I've apparently put more thought into the timeline of events than the director did. Not sure how I feel about that. at any rate, Eggsy had one hell of a weekend. What a wild fucking ride.
Also, how the heck did Eggsy have the energy to bum Princess Tilde after all of this? If he didn't sleep between the argument and the Church scene like I suspect, then he's been up since about 9:00 am on Saturday to 10:00 pm Sunday night. That's 37 hours.
I mean, I've stayed up that long before, but at that point I'm basically a zombie. And I've never killed my boss and had to fight my way through a bunker during that time.
Addrenaline must be one hell of a drug.
#kingsman#kingsman the secret service#eggsy unwin#harry hart#i did this all for hartwin#hartwin#if any fic writers want the full timeline I've figured out let me know

Staged over a four-day shoot in a rented Union City, NJ theater, the production starred Tony Award®-winning actor Shuler Hensley (Oklahoma) as The Creature and featured Broadway veterans Ivan Rutherford (Les Miserables) as Victor Frankenstein and Rita Harvey (Phantom of the Opera) as Elizabeth. The production was a hybrid of a film and a live show. Shot cinematically out-of-sequence with multiple cameras and without an audience, the show was nonetheless filmed on a single stage with traditional theatrical lighting.
