Summary: When Reed accidentally gets involved in something his friend died for the reader (his girlfriend) comes home to a very scary situation. Later they each help each other through forms of grief.
Authors Note: There will be a lot of time skips and it mostly follows Reed’s story line in the show with just a few minor (very minor) changes to it. This will be part of a future Reed series, for now though please just enjoy this part as a little sneak peek to the future series.
Reed’s Pov:
“Did you talk to Mac like you wanted to, babe?” Y/n, my girlfriend, asks as I talk with her on the phone while walking up to our campus dorm room building.
“Yeah, I did. Told him everything I knew,” I answer her and she sighs, making me imagine her frowning.
“Reed, baby. Are you sure you should be getting involved with this?” she queries in worry as I open the door to the building.
“I’ll be fine, babe. It’s for Brian. You know he’d do the same for us,” I beg her to understand and she sighs.
“I just don’t want you getting hurt,” she tells me in a sad tone and I stop walking up the stairs for a moment.
“Babe. Mac won’t let me get hurt. I’ll be okay,” I calmly inform her in hopes of calming her anxiety.
“How’d you even get into the lab, isn’t it hard to get into?” she asks and I smirk as I start walking up the flight of stairs again.
“I told them I was family and they let me in,” I inform her and she giggles.
“And they let you in?” she parrots in disbelief and I smile even more as I let out a chuckle.
“That they did,” I reply to her in a smug tone and she laughs as I imagine her shaking her head in disbelief.
“That’s crazy. It’s the top forensics building in New York and they just let you in if you say you’re family? Shouldn’t their security be a little better than that?” she asks in an amused tone that makes me chuckle and shake my head.
“You would think that, wouldn’t you?” I ask and we both laugh.
“Now I’m second guessing my future line of work…” she jokes and I shake my head.
“Awe, don’t do that, sweetheart. It’s all you’ve wanted growing up. I’m sure not much actually happens where they need hard core security there anyway,” I comfort to the best of my ability and she laughs.
“Oh. Okay… I guess I won’t drop out of class,” she jokes and I chuckle, shaking my head at our playfulness.
“Anyways… When will you be home?” I ask her and she hums.
“I’ll be home in about a half hour, tops, honey. I promise,” she swears to me and I smile, shaking my head as I continue my walk up the stairs to our dorm room.
“It’s okay, babe. I know work is demanding sometimes. We’ve talked about this. All I care about is that you come home safe,” I inform her and she giggles, making me smile.
“Ok. Well, I’ll see you in half an hour babe. I love you,” she tells me and my grin grows as I unlock the front door.
“I love you too, sweetheart,” I respond and before I know it, she’s hanging up.
I chuckle, shaking my head as I pocket my phone and finish unlocking the door before going into our room. I walk in and pull my bag over my head as I close the door, but I’m immediately in defense mode as the room feels off. I look over at my computer and find a sticky note stuck to it.
At first I’m relieved, thinking y/n had just left me a cute note like she always does, but when I get closer it’s clear my laptop screen has been broken and as I read the note my stomach drops: keep your story quiet.
I walk up a little closer as fear now courses through me and next thing I know, I feel a presence behind me. I quickly turn to look at what it is, but as soon as I do I’m punched, making me fall back to the floor. The person keeps kicking and punching me, but I can’t make out who it is because they wear a solid white mask.
I try my hardest to fight back, but after a few hits to the head everything becomes blurry so I try to curl into myself and hide away. The person keeps kicking and I keep trying to move away, but to no avail. Soon before I know it, the person stops and I look up at them as black spots slowly fill my vision. The last thing I see is the person leaving the dorm room before finally my eyes close.
Reader’s Pov:
I smile as I walk up to our dorm room building, glad that my manager let me go home earlier than I was supposed to. I tiredly but happily drag myself up the stairs to surprise my boyfriend. Once I get closer, my smile falls as I see the door is cracked open. I immediately start to worry, seeing as Reed never leaves it open and I carefully push it the rest of the way open.
“Reed,” I gasp out when I see him crumpled up on the floor.
“Reed. Baby?” I call him again as I drop my bag aside before getting down onto my knees next to him.
I shake him and he doesn’t respond so I turn him over. I gasp as I see his face clearly beaten and bruised up. Immediately I stand back up and at first I feel a little dizzy, but I push it off to walk over to the desk. Quickly I search for the card I know Reed has. It takes a few minutes, but I find it and hold it up. I quickly dial the number and it rings for a few minutes.
“Hello? How can I help you?” A voice asks through the phone and I pause.
“Hello?” The voice asks again and I blink.
“H-h-hi, is this Mac Taylor?” I stutter out into the phone and he pauses for a moment.
“Yes. This is he. May I ask who you are?” he asks and I look over at Reed.
“I’m Reed’s girlfriend. He, uhh… said this morning that if anything happened to call you,” I quickly explain in a panicked tone.
“Is Reed okay? Are you?” he asks me and I pause as I look down at Reed, now getting choked up.
“I’m okay. I came home to our door open and him on the floor,” I explain as I hold my tears back so he can understand me.
“Okay, listen to me. I’ll be there as quickly as I can and I’ll bring some others with me. Is he unconscious?” he asks me and I hold back another sob.
“He is. I tried calling out to him and even shaking him, yet no response,” I inform him as I bite my lip, staring down at Reed with tears constantly welling up in my eyes.
“Ok. Just stay with him. Me and a couple officers will be there in a few minutes, okay?” he calmly tells me and I continue to stare at Reed, not responding.
“Can you do that?” Mac asks me again and I quickly straighten my back.
“Y…yeah. Please get here quickly,” I reply as I now get onto the floor next to Reed.
“Of course. I’ll be there as soon as I can,” he quickly promises before we both hang up.
I sit against the side of our bed and lightly pick Reed’s head up to lay it in my lap. I hug his head close before leaving a light kiss on his forehead as I finally let the tears fall.
“Reed. Come on, baby,” I gently coo to him in hopes he’ll start to stir awake.
“Come on Reed. Please open your eyes for me,” I gently plead with him as I rub his hair back from his forehead.
I sit with him for a few more minutes before suddenly he lets out a low groan. I perk up and gently shush him as I continue to rub his hair back.
“It’s okay, baby. I’m here. You’re okay,” I coo softly to him as he slowly comes to.
It takes him a bit, but finally he fully comes to and when his eyes are fully open, he starts to squirm in my arms. He freaks out for a minute, but calms when I hold his head so he can see it’s only me.
“Shh. It’s only me, babe. You’re okay… you’re safe. I’m right here,” I calmly murmur to him as I rock us back and forth lightly.
“No. You can’t be here. Th- they might come back…” he fights me again and I shake my head.
“No one is coming back, Reed. You're okay and I’m okay. Mac’s on his way,” I inform him as I continue to play with his hair and he immediately calms again.
“I’m sorry you came home to me like this, babe,” he groans out and I shake my head.
“It’s okay, honey. I’m with you through anything, you know that,” I promise him and he smiles sadly up at me.
“Reed,” a voice calls out, making me look up to see a man standing at our door.
“Hi, Mac,” Reed replies with a sheepish smile.
“He’s in here, guys,” Mac calls down the hall before walking into the room.
“Hi. I’m Mac,” introduces himself to me and I smile lightly at him.
“I’m y/n. It’s nice to meet you. I’ve heard so much about you from Reed,” I explain and Mac smiles.
“It’s nice to meet you too, although I wish it was over lunch or breakfast instead of this,” Mac comments and Reed laughs lightly.
“Yeah, that’s my fault,” Reed comments with a sheepish smile that also seems to be full of pain.
“Do you wanna get up?” I ask Reed and he gives me a light nod.
“Ok. Come on,” I nod back before standing by myself and getting ready to help him up.
I help him until he stands with Mac helping from Reed’s other side. Once he’s standing, he staggers ever so slightly and I hold onto him tighter before he moves to sit on the bed. One of the paramedics that came with Mac walks over. Once Reed sits, the dizzy feeling starts to creep up again and now I stagger a bit.
“Whoa. Babe, sit,” Reed tells me as he holds onto my hand.
“Hold that thought,” I reply before rushing to the bathroom on the other side of our room.
“Babe?” Reed questions as he gets up and rushes in after me.
I drop down onto my knees in front of the toilet and my stomach releases the dinner I had before work. Reed quickly rushes to hold my hair back and rubs my back soothingly. It takes a few minutes, but soon I finish and sit back against Reed.
“Babe. Are you doing okay?” he asks me with a furrowed brow.
“I’m fine, honey. I think I’m just in shock mode. You know me. Let’s go back out,” I tell him as I wipe at my lips before standing and cupping some water into my mouth.
“Are you sure?” he asks me and I nod.
“Let’s go,” I reply before pulling him back out to the bed.
“Babe. Sit,” Reed commands as he pulls me down next to him.
“Okay. Let’s take a look at the injuries,” the paramedic comments as he pulls out a few things from his bag.
The paramedic quickly looks him over, checking his eyes and has him follow the light. Then he checks Reed’s ribs for any that may be broken. Soon the paramedic packs his stuff back up and stands.
“Okay, son. I think you are okay. Nothing major, just a few bruises, a concussion, and a few broken ribs. All should heal within the next month,” the paramedic informs Reed who nods and sniffles.
“Make sure to put something cold on that forehead bruise and maybe that eye,” the paramedic finishes off before nodding to Mac.
“Wait…” Reed calls out before the paramedic can leave.
“Yes?” The paramedic questions as he turns back to Reed.
“Can you please look over my girlfriend? She’s been having throw up episodes and dizzy spells,” Reed explains and I quickly try to hide the widening of my eyes by looking towards the fridge.
“Reed, baby. I’m okay. I told you it’s just the shock, it’ll wear off. Really, I’m fine,” I tell him before turning around with a soda.
“Are you sure, ma’am? I don’t mind giving you a look,” the paramedic butts in and I fight the huff I want to let out.
“Oh. Thank you, sir, but really, I’m fine,” I deflect and the paramedic seems to get the clue.
“Ok. Have a good rest of your night then,” the paramedic bids his goodbye, leaving before Reed can say anything.
“Here, babe, put this on your face,” I tell Reed as I hand him a can and he gives me a look of disbelief.
“What?” I ask when he doesn’t take the can.
“You should have gotten checked out,” he tells me and I sigh, shaking my head.
“Reed. How many times do I have to tell you? I’m okay. A little shaken from finding you unconscious on the floor? Hell yeah. Other than that, I’m fine. I have a doctor's appointment set up tomorrow, remember?” I tell him and he sighs, shaking his head.
“I just want you to be okay,” he whispers out and I smile softly as I sit down next to him.
“And I am. So let’s get you in the same boat, okay?” I ask him as I reach forward and squeeze his hand.
“Okay…” he agrees softly before pulling me into his side.
“Here, baby. Put this on your face,” I almost command as I put the soda into his other hand and he chuckles.
“Okay. Okay,” he agrees as he wraps his fingers around it and pulls the can up to his face.
“Are you two sure you're alright?” Mac asks and we both look up at him.
“Yeah. I think we are,” Reed tells him before putting the soda back on his face.
“Reed. I want you and this beautiful girl of yours to stay at your parents’ house tonight,” Mac tells him, pointing at him.
“Yeah. I’m keeping y/n safe,” Reed comments as he takes the can from his face and stands.
“This is my first Geraldo, you know. Beat up for a story. Making my girlfriend have a freak out when she just wanted to come home and sleep,” he explains as he looks at himself in the mirror next to our bed. He rubs at his face before I stand just a bit to smack his hand away from his face.
“What’s this about?” Mac asks him as he leans over the desk and uses tweezers to take the note off the broken screen.
“I have no idea. You know, I’m not even writing on the Kings and shadows. My piece is about students paying other students to take their exams for them,” Reed explains as he sits back down next to me and I cuddle into his side when he puts his arm around me.
“Brian Miller know this?” Mac asks as he closes up the yellow envelope he holds.
“I told him as soon as he told me what he was writing about,” Reed replies with a head nod and Mac pauses as he looks at our floor.
He soon moves and bends down to it. He uses the tweezers to pick up what looks like a crumb of some kind and lifts it up to his face.
“Let me see the bottom of both your shoes,” Mac tells us and Reed nods.
“Yeah… ow,” Reed winces as he lifts his leg and I rub his chest lightly before lifting my own.
“See, Brian and I, we were pretty competitive,” Reed explains and I scoff.
“Pretty, baby you were more than competitive, admit it. You know I’m right,” I jump in and Reed looks at me before laughing.
“I mean, she’s got a point… anyway, like I told him I wouldn’t mention him in my piece if he quit,” Reed goes on with his explanation again, wincing as he switches legs for Mac to look at.
“But he said he’d already agreed to take two more exams. Then he was out,” Reed ends his explanation as now both his feet are down again.
Mac looks over my first foot real quick, then I switch to the other and he looks at that one too before letting me put them back down.
“Eddie Williams and Thomas Brighton were Brian’s last two clients,” Mac starts and Reed puts his head down, letting out a low ‘Yeah,’ as he does.
“But only one of them had reason to want both stories killed,” Mac ominously comments as he stands up and puts the envelope in his pocket.
After Mac and the rest of the CSIs left our apartment, we quickly packed our bags before heading to Reed’s parents’ house. Now we lay on his childhood bed together and Reed rubs my back lightly.
“I’m thinking of going to Brian’s funeral…” he comments out loud and I move my head so I can look at him, letting my chin rest on his chest.
“If you want to go, baby, we’ll go. When is it?” I inform him and he smiles softly at me.
“How did I get so lucky?” he asks me as he rubs my arm ever so lightly and I smile.
“I think I’m the lucky one,” I inform him and he smiles again, shaking his head in disbelief.
“How about we’re both lucky?” he asks in a cheeky tone and I grin, giggling.
“Agreed. Now, when’s Brian’s funeral?” I ask him and he pauses.
“Tomorrow afternoon…” he admits, almost like it’s a bad thing.
“Why do you say that like it’s bad, babe?” I ask him and he shrugs.
“I mean… you have your appointment tomorrow, right?” he asks me and I perk up, sitting up fast.
“Babe? What’s wrong?” he asks me with confusion and worry written all over his face.
“I have something for you. I was going to give it to you tonight, but then everything happened,” I quickly explain as I dig around in my bag for the small gift I have for him and his face relaxes.
“Babe, you didn’t have to,” he denies, shaking his head as I finally pull the small gift bag out of my bag.
“Oh, but I did. Open it. I think you’ll be plenty surprised. I know I was,” I tell him as I sit on the bed with my legs curled up behind me and bite my lip.
He starts to open it and soon before I know it, he’s pulling the little onesie out. He pauses to read it before looking up at me. I smile a shy, worried smile as he looks at me in awe.
“Babe, is this real?” he asks and I giggle, nodding as tears well up in my eyes.
“I had the same reaction. I know we said we’d wait till after marriage, but I know you’re the only one for me and I’ve known that since 4th Grade,” I ramble as I play with a loose string on his blanket.
“Babe-” he starts, but I quickly cut him off.
“That’s what the appointment tomorrow is for. First scan…” I trail off before I let out a gasp as he uses his finger to guide my face up to look at him.
“Honey, I’m not mad. I’m elated, like you said I’ve seen us together since forever,” he tells me softly as he rubs my cheek ever so slightly and the tears start to fall.
“I love you Reed, so, so much,” I inform him softly as his eyes fill with tears too and he wipes at one that falls down my cheek.
“I love you too, so, so much pretty girl, always,” he replies, rubbing my cheek and I grin.
He sets the onsie and its bag aside before turning back to me. He pulls me back into the hug and kisses my forehead before slowly laying both of us back down onto the bed. He lightly rubs my arm that lays across his stomach along with my lower back. We lay there for a few minutes, both grinning ear to ear as he now rubs light circles on my stomach, making me laugh every few minutes when it tickles a little. Soon he leaves another kiss on my forehead as he moves back to just rubbing my arm.
“I was also thinking of asking Mac where mom was buried,” he mumbles out, breaking the serene silence as I draw shapes against his covered stomach.
“If you want to, honey. I think it’d be nice to know,” I agree with him and he sighs.
“It’s just… I wanted you to meet her just as bad as I did myself. It might… be the only way for me to introduce you and myself to her,” he explains and I shake my head.
“Reed, baby. That’s very sweet, but you don’t have to explain to me. I get it, I know you,” I softly tell him as I lay my chin on his chest to look at him again.
“And I’d love to meet her, although I’m very sure she’s looking down on you and watching over you,” I tell him softly as I reach up and caress his face.
He leans into it before kissing my palm and a tear falls from his eye. I quickly catch it and wipe it away. He shakes his head and I smile softly at him.
“What?” I ask him as he just stares at me like I hung the stars just for him.
“I think she sent me you, knowing I’d need you. So she sent your stubborn little self my way…” he tells me softly and I huff.
“I wasn’t that stubborn…” I fight back with a roll of my eyes.
“Oh yes, you were. Still are. I remember your little first grade self marching up next to me and little Hero Mckinley telling him he should laugh at someone who clearly needs help and pushing him,” he jokes with a smirk and I roll my eyes.
“Well he was making fun of you! I wasn’t just going to stand by and let my best friend get made fun of. Plus, he’s the one that egged me on,” I grunt as I cross my arms and Reed chuckles.
“And who the hell names their kid Hero then teaches him to be an absolute asshat? Like that’s just stupid. Heroes are supposed to be the one saving the day, not the villain. I mean it’s literally in the name,” I complain and Reed laughs, making me slap his shoulder.
“I mean, I can’t say I don’t agree with you, baby. He was the absolute worst,” he adds with a dramatic eye roll before shaking his head and I sigh.
“Really, he didn’t wanna be pushed, he shouldn't have been bullying you and other kids, let alone tell me to fight someone my own size,” I add on and Reed laughs again.
“Really, he shouldn’t have. You’ve always been good at taking down people half your size…” he agrees though his laughter and I shake my head.
“Damn right you are, baby. He should have known not to mess with you,” I tell him and he grins as his laugh dies off.
“See I told you, she must have sent you my way. Must have known that little me would be a sissy pants,” he jokes, wiggling his eyebrows and I sigh.
“Reed, you weren’t a sissy pants. You were an only child and you were seven years old,” I deadpan and he chuckles.
“So were you!” he fights back and I shake my head.
“Yeah… but I had two brothers… who still like to kick my butt when they see me. I literally had to learn to fight back,” I humorlessly tell him with a raised eyebrow and he pauses.
“Yeah, I guess that changes things a bit…” he comments and he chuckles when I smack him again.
“Ya think?!” I playfully ask him as if he’s stupid only making him laugh again.
“I really do think mom sent me you though,” he seriously informs me when he’s done laughing.
“Well, maybe she knew we were made for each other, then. I know myself that we are,” I tell him and he smiles.
“I love you, you know that?” he asks me and I smile softly.
“Yes, I know that, and I also happen to know that I love you just as much,” I reply to him and he smiles before stretching his neck just a little bit to kiss my nose.
I giggle and scrunch up my nose, but kiss him back when he kisses my lips next. He then lays back and I cuddle in a little closer.
“Sleep honey, sleep, we’ve had a very long day,” he informs me and I nod sleepily against his chest.
“Very, very long indeed. You sleep too, Reed,” I tell him in the most stern tone I can manage though my sleepiness and he chuckles.
“I promise, baby. I will,” he replies and it makes me grin before my eyes slowly close as sleep soon takes over.
I hold onto Reed’s arm as we walk out of the church behind the family and the pallbearers. He stops at the top of the stairs and puts his hands in his pockets as he lightly kicks the ground with the tip of his shoe. I squeeze his arm and he takes his opposite hand out of his pocket. He grabs my arm lightly and squeezes it back as I lean against him. I nuzzle into his side and turns to me, giving my forehead a kiss before leaning his cheek against of my head as I close my eyes.
I open my eyes again and see he’s tearing up again as he watches them put the coffin in the hearse. I rub his arms for a few minutes before he gives a small nod of his head.
“Mac’s over there,” he comments and I look up at where he nodded.
“You wanna go talk to him?” I ask and he nods solemnly.
Reed takes his hand out of his pocket and reaches down to mine, gripping it softly as we walk down the steps.
“Hey, Mac,” Reed greets his somewhat surrogate dad as we come to a stop.
Mac spares a look over at the casket as the pallbearers push it the rest of the way into the hearse. Reed chokes up again as he too watches and I start to choke up as well. I rub my cheek lightly against his shoulder while holding his hand a little closer for comfort. He pulls his hand away from mine so he can put his arm around my shoulder. I nuzzle into his neck as I try to hide my face and he squeezes my shoulder.
“I wanted you kids to know that we’re going to make an arrest,” Mac informs us and Reed lets out a long sigh.
“Good. I’m glad,” Reed comments, squeezing my side lightly as he lets more tears flow.
“Maybe I should have just turned Brian in for cheating, you know?” Reed adds on as he starts to cry even more and I squeeze his side with the arm I have wrapped around his stomach.
“He would have been kicked out of the university, but he never would have been in that hedge maze,” Reed finishes his thought with even more tears running down his face and I kiss his cheek lightly.
“You’re taking a lot of responsibility, Reed,” Mac comments and Reed shakes his head.
“It’s ‘cause I feel bad… I feel I shoulda stopped him. I feel like I shoulda done something, but…” Reed trails off as he looks down for a moment and I hug him a little tighter.
“I’m gonna miss him,” Reed comments and I finally let out a broken sob.
“Goodness, Reed. I’m gonna miss him too,” I add and Reed hugs me closer as I cry into his shoulder.
“I know, babe. I’m so sorry,” Reed tells me as he rubs my lower back and I shake my head.
“Don’t you dare say that. It’s not you who should be sorry. It’s whoever killed Brian who needs to be sorry,” I sternly tell him, hoping it’ll change the way he’s thinking.
“I’d listen to your girlfriend. She speaks the truth,” Mac tells Reed and he lazily points at me.
“She always does… look, we gotta go,” Reed tells him. “We’re gonna head over to the cemetery before y/n’s doctor's appointment,” Reed informs him and he nods solemnly.
“Reed, if there’s anything I can do for you two…” Mac sympathetically promises us, Reed looks at me for a moment and I nod at him. He looks down for a second, thinking it over before looking up.
“I’d like to know where my mom’s buried,” Reed finally asks and Mac looks away, sighing for a moment.
“She wasn’t…” Mac somberly states and Reed sighs before turning to me to lean his forehead against me.
“Her body was never found. No trace at all…” Mac explains in a tone of melancholy before pausing.
“But they’re…” he tries to continue, but stops to sigh. “We’re still looking,” he finishes, looking away as his own grief hits him.
Reed sighs before letting go of me and taking a few steps forward. He reaches out and pulls Mac into a hug. It takes Mac a second before he hugs back and squeezes him a bit with both hands. Reed sniffles as he and Mac hold each other in the hug for a few minutes before hesitantly parting. Reed steps back and puts his arm back around my waist, pulling me into his side.
“Thanks for everything,” Reed gives Mac his appreciation and Mac nods.
“Ok. Then we gotta get going. Ready, babe?” Reed comments as he turns to me and I raise an eyebrow at him.
“Oh! Can we, ahh, do lunch or breakfast tomorrow?” Reed asks and Mac smiles softly.
“Yeah. Of course. Just text me the time and place,” Mac agrees with a smile and Reed nods happily.
“Ok then, we’ll see you tomorrow, Mac,” Reed promises with a smile and Mac nods.
“See you tomorrow, kids,” Mac replies and Reed gives him one last nod before starting to walk away.
After leaving Mac we quickly head to the subway and get on. We ride it all the way to the street my doctor’s office is on before getting off.
“Are you excited, babe?” I ask Reed, who squeezes my hand.
“Of course I am. What kind of question is that?” he jokingly asks and I playfully roll my eyes.
“Oh of course, I’m so sorry,” I reply with a grin as he opens the door and holds it open for me.
“Let’s go see our baby,” he tells me with his own grin as I walk through the door.
The end…

Until There Was You - 2/7 | westallen fanfiction
Westallen secret santa gift
For: @dickandcr
From: @backtothestart02
Rating: T - for some language and suggestive material
Christmas note: I hope you enjoy! Have an amazing holiday season!
Chapter 2 -
It was a few days of newly renewed hesitant bliss before Iris found the courage to not avoid Linda at work anymore. She came early to work actually, like she knew Linda liked to do, and even brought her the newest Christmas flavor from a nearby Starbucks as a peace offering. She didn’t even take off her coat, just went straight to Linda’s desk and waited for her to glance up at her.
She spoke before she looked.
“Don’t tell me. You got back together.”
“Cinnamon coated whipped cream on top of the newest peppermint latte. From yours truly.”
Linda flicked up her gaze to the Iris’ hopeful eyes and reluctantly took the beverage from her.
“Bribes will not work.” She took a sip. “Mmm. Even tasty ones.”
Iris grabbed a chair and sat across from her.
“I’m sorry, Lin, but I was afraid what you were gonna think…and say.”
“Warranted.”
“I didn’t expect you to jump for joy, but-”
“Good, because I’m seething. Iris, honestly, how could you? After everythi-”
“He quit his job.”
Her eyes bulged, but she shook it off.
“That’s not an improvement. He needs income. What, did he expect you’d move in with him and carry the weight?”
“No…he has a new job now. Starts today.”
Linda’s brows furrowed.
“I don’t understand.”
“This one has a more flexible schedule. No nights, weekends, holidays, even a longer lunch break and vacation time.”
Linda nibbled on her bottom lip.
“He’s been looking for a job like this for weeks apparently. I don’t know, Lin, it feels like he’s really trying.”
Linda sighed.
“It does appear that way.”
“All I ask is that you give him a chance.”
“No. I ran out of chances like five chances ago.”
Iris groaned and face palmed herself.
“But,” Linda continued. “I will try to tolerate his existence and be happy for you if he’s being serious about changing.”
“He is, I think.”
“I don’t have to like him though, right?”
Iris gave a weak smile.
“That’s asking too much of me, honey. Sorry, I can’t do it.”
“Alright,” Iris said. “I can accept that.”
“And next time?”
“Yeah?”
“Less cinnamon. I feel like I’m gonna choke on it.”
Iris laughed.
“Noted.”
Linda reached for her hand as Iris stood up, intending to retreat to her desk.
“Don’t put days between us again, yeah?”
Iris smiled softly.
“Also noted.”
…
He hadn’t seen Patty in what – nine months? Yeah, that felt accurate. He cringed at that. He hoped she would be happy to see him. The fact that he wasn’t sure told him that this was the right way to go.
He’d been reluctant to see his mother’s – and it turned out, father’s – line of reasoning, but they were right. He did love Patty, and he wanted her in his life. The only way to keep moving forward was to make a grand gesture. And boy, if this wasn’t the biggest grand gesture he’d ever imagined for himself.
So, he took a flight up to New York City, a cab out to the precinct on the south side of town, and made a quick detour for a flower shop before setting inside and asking for direction to find a certain CSI that he was intent on surprising.
He was directed to the second floor and a lab at the end of the long hall. The person who’d directed him said there should be no one else up there. All the other CSIs went out to lunch, but ‘Miss Spivot’, as she was referred to on the job, liked her solitude.
He took a deep breath when he reached the end of the hall, ducked his head inside to see if she was indeed inside and then knocked lightly on the metal doorframe.
“Come in.”
He smirked. She hadn’t even looked up. So, he knocked again, this time a little harder.
“I said-” She spun around, sounding mildly annoyed, but that was until she saw the smiling face looking at her from the hall. “Barry?!”
He power-walked over to her and presented her with the array of flowers he’d picked out from the shop.
“These are for you.”
Her mouth hanging open, she dropped the pen she’d been holding onto and jumped into his arms, kissing him soundly.
“God, I’ve missed kissing you,” she murmured.
“You surprised?”
She pulled back, brushing some of his hair out of his eyes.
“Always. I can’t believe you’re here!”
“If you can’t believe that, you won’t believe what I have to say next either.”
Her eyes widened.
“I’m listening.”
“I’m staying.”
“For the holidays?” Her first thought.
He tugged her closer.
“For good.”
“What?” she asked, tears welling up. “You mean it? You’re coming to stay? For me.”
“I’m serious about us, Patty. I want us to take that next step.”
She kissed him again.
“I love you.”
He beamed, the words washing over him in joyful waves.
“I love you, too.”
…
It was less chaotic and confusing than Barry had expected it to be, yet it was still somewhat difficult finding his cousin’s dorm room on the NYU campus. After about half an hour of wandering about, he stumbled onto an information desk and explained his situation. The young woman was helpful enough and directed him to a building across the courtyard and the room number that Jesse Wells inhabited.
Two knocks had a frazzled, petite brunette looking at him with a curling rolls in her hair and a dumbfounded smile on her face.
“Barry?”
“Am I interrupting something?” he asked, grinning wide.
She lunged across the doorway and hugged him tightly. He lifted her up slightly and smiled into the curlers bopping about in her short hair.
“What are you doing here?” she asked.
“Are you busy? I have a proposition for you.”
“I’m all ears,” she said, practically bouncing up onto her toes.
He chuckled.
“You sure? Because your hair implies…otherwise. You got a hot date, or-?”
She rolled her eyes.
“No. I have a presentation this evening for my night class. Professor said we have to look super professional, so I thought I’d curl my hair for the occasion. Now tell me what you want before I have to squeeze it out of you!”
“Alright. I’m moving.”
“Moving.” Her eyes widened. “To where?”
“Where do you think, Jess? Here. To New York City!”
“Oh, my God!” she gasped, hugging him tightly again. “For real? Like, for real, for real? I thought you were weirdly attached to your parents.”
He looked mildly annoyed at that observation.
“Sorry,” she said, obviously not sorry.
He cleared his throat.
“Mom gave me a little pushing to show me what was important, and let’s just say…I realized if I want this relationship with Patty to stay intact…”
“Oh, my God!” she declared again. “You’re going to propose! And you told me first, aww.”
He laughed.
“You want to help me pick out the ring?”
“Want to? I demand you let me.”
He shook his head, smiling.
“Okay, okay, let’s get going then.” He tugged on her arm.
“Hold your horses, Mr. Allen. Let me get these curlers out of my hair so I look somewhat presentable at Tiffany’s.”
“Tiffany’s?” he asked, brows furrowed.
She looked at him in disbelief.
“You’re in New York, and you’re proposing.” She laid her hand on his shoulder. “It has to be Tiffany’s.”

Petals of Winter - Chapter 4

Chapter 3

Chapter 4
**Sorry for the one day delay**
Still looking for evidence, Mac and Stella decided to check out Lieutenant Riesen’s apartment. The sup of the building met the team at her door, “Riesen was a good tenant, she always paid in advance before she left on a mission. Quiet and kept to herself.” He said as she searched through his keys for the one that would unlock the door.
“When was the last time you saw the Lieutenant?” Mac asked, as he set down his case and placed his hand on his gun.
“Uh, I think it was two nights ago.” He answered, “Yeah, yeah, it was two nights ago, when she got back from deployment.” He added as he unlocked the door.
Both Mac and Stella pulled their guns and pushed the sup behind them as they slowly entered the apartment. They checked each room calling out when they found nothing. They met in the middle of the living room, “The place is clear, Mac. I don’t even see any signs of a struggle.” Stella stated.
“Alright, we process the apartment. There has to be something here that will point to her killer.” Mac said as he started back towards the door to get his kit. He stopped and looked at the sup, “Did she have a boyfriend or was with anyone the last time you saw her?”
The sup thought for a second, “Erm, there was this guy that used to come around when she was here. I never did catch his name though, she did say he was with the FBI or something like that.”
“Can you give a description?” Mac asked.
“Oh yeah! Sure, I can.” The sup answered. “Like for a sketch?”
Mac dug out his cellphone, “I’ll get one of the detectives here to take you down to the station to give the description.”
“Mac!” Stella called from the apartment, “You’re going to want to see this.”
Mac nodded to one of the uniformed officers that just walked off the elevator, “Take this man down to the station and have him give a description of the man he saw the Lieutenant with to Flack.”
“Yes, sir.” The uniformed officer replied to Mac and gestured the sup to follow him.
One the sup had left with the uniformed officer, Mac turned around picked up his kit and went into the apartment. He walked up to Stella who was holding a photo, shining her flashlight at it. “Mac, I found this on the bed.” She said handed it to him.
Mac took the photo and looked at it. It was a picture of you and Fornell walking out of an Italian restaurant. It was obvious to both the forensic detectives that you were in a relationship with Fornell. Stella looked up at Mac, “Did you know she had a boyfriend?” She asked.
Mac nodded, “Tobias Fornell, with the FBI.”
“Mac, what the hell is her picture doing in our vic’s apartment?” Stella asked, her brow knitted together. “And look at this on the back of the photo.”
Mac’s brow knitted together and as he flipped the photo over and read the writing on the back. ‘The petals are brown, the leaves shredded into blades.’

The flight into Washington was thankfully a smooth flight, and was rather quiet. You took this time to work on the preliminary profile report that Mac wanted before you left. You already knew who they would be after, however all the evidence of the suspect pointed to a dead man. So, you still had to build the profile, however your work for the New York Crime Lab going to have to wait.
It was two o’clock in the morning by the time the plan was landing in Ronald Reagan airport. You didn’t any sleep on the plane, sleep was something you would do once your feet were back on the ground and LaKlare was in prison.
Soon as the plane was taxiing down the runway, you turned your cellphone off airplane mode. The first thing you noticed was that you had a voicemail and a text message from Mac. All the text message read was, ‘Call me ASAP.’ Knowing him, the voicemail would also be from him.
Signing into your voicemail, you listened to the message. “Y/N, it’s Mac. We need to talk. Call me as soon as you get this.”
You were too tired for this, you thought. Even though he was your boss, and your close friend it was easiest just to let him sit in the dark. The less he knew about what was happening, the safe he would be. You didn’t want to drag him and his team into a mess that had to do with you. This was something from your past that you had to deal with, and the only people you were willing to drag into it was those that were involved when it initially happened.
Once the plane was sitting at the terminal and they gave the go ahead to leave the plane, you reached about over and grabbed your backpack. With your backpack over your shoulder and the laptop bag in hand you made your way off the plane into the gate. As you were walking down the ramp you felt your cellphone vibrate in your pocket.
Pulling it out, you looked down at the call display, it was Mac again. Hitting the silent button, you made your way down the ramp, and into the main area of the airport. It didn’t take you long to spot the lineup of taxi cabs that were waiting for would be fairs. Climbing into the back of one of the cabs you looked at the driver. “Where too miss?” The driver asked.
“Washington Navy Yard, please.” You answered.
The driver frowned, “At this hour?”
“Yes.”
“No problem ma’am.”

Imagine the alternate universe where instead of being a desert dwelling cannibal mutant, Lizard is a successful medical examiner mutant working for the CSI in New York (idk they’re both played by Robert Joy ¯\_(ツ)_/¯)
YES! Sorry it took so long, but this is great! I never knew he was in there, but this is a fun idea.

2. I Climbed The Tree To See The World (When The Gusts Came Around To Blow Me Down, I Held On As Tightly As You Held On To Me) - darcy centric | darcy/steve - The path to self-discovery, including becoming Coulson's assistant-slash-liaison-slash-bff, Captain America's lady love, and rating fourth on the SHIELD BAMF scale, was like the yellow brick road; it was chaos and confusion around every bend. | Kudos: 3973

Do you respond to comments? Why or why not? not all of them. i do try to keep up on them, especially on longer stories when there's been significant wait times in between chapters, or when a reader is asking a question or is unclear on something. and especially when someone writes a really indepth comment/review, i like to respond to those and talk about motivations and character growth.
What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending? I've written a number of fics that either had suicide or major character death, so i'm not sure if one outranks the other in terms of most angsty... hmm... i remember "be still and know that I'm with you (be still and know that I am here)" and "light a match, burn the world to ash (I will watch it die, and hold your hand as I fly)" both got some pretty intense reactions when they were posted. And "It's Your Song That Sets Me Free (I Sing It While I Feel I Can't Go On)" was basically just angst from beginning to end. buuuuut, i think i'll say "so you think you can tell (heaven from hell" was, only because there's a build up of everything going so right, only to pivot at the end, so it feels very bittersweet.
Do you write crossovers? If so what’s the craziest one you’ve written? i loooooove crossovers. i find writing in the marvel fandom makes things quite easy, but also smallville. as long as i can find a common thread, i enjoy finding a way to overlap two shows. i'll say the hardest one to write was "ruby red slippers (unavailable in her size)." I'm not sure why, but i found writing each personality together just felt strange. i liked the idea behind the story, but i definitely remember feeling like i was really forcing myself to keep going, like something just didn't fit right.
Have you ever received hate on a fic? oh, definitely. you cannot please everyone, it's impossible. for the most part, hate comes and i either argue back, take the criticism for what it's worth, or just ignore it when it's baseless. i think the hate that bothered me the most was a homophobic PM someone sent me re: "you know I will adore you ('til eternity)," on FFnet. i actually went and searched it up. they've since blocked me so i can't read our whole thread back and forth. but i did put part of it on tumblr so i could rant on it a bit, so you can see that here.
Do you write smut? If so what kind? ha. yes. depending on the story, it can be really detailed or really flowery. it depends on the ship, the plot, and how graphic i feel like being. i've definitely become more comfortable over the years with my writing. that said, i think everybody likes something different. i once had a reviewer tell me a sex scene was too much, just too intense. it was a stefan/caroline story and to be fair, that entire oneshot was just them fucking, lol, but it is what it is. to each their own.
Have you ever had a fic stolen? Multiple times.
Have you ever had a fic translated? Yes! for the record, i am always happy to have my stories translated and shared. i just like having a link sent to me and to be credited.
What’s your all time favorite ship? i have a list of OTPs, because interests change and as shows come and go, my love for a ship can be shelved for a while before it pops back up at random. currently, i can't get enough of buck/eddie from 9-1-1. and, historically, chloe/oliver (smallville) and felicity/oliver (arrow) have been two of my top OTPs. but i think i'd have to go with bonnie/damon. they had all the potential and the show dropped the ball by not exploring it. at the same time, that's kind of a blessing, because i don't trust those writers to properly explore what they had without eventually destroying it for the likes of de/ena. it means a treasure trove for writing where it could have gone and all the what if's.
What’s a WIP that you want to finish, but don’t think you ever will? the intention is always to finish. but given how i feel about allison mack and how that impacts my feelings re: chloe sullivan, pretty much anything with her as a main character is not something i see myself returning to.
What are your writing strengths? What are your writing weaknesses? i'm putting these together because my strength is my weakness. i love to write. when i get an idea, i go all in and i will skip eating and sleeping to just write write write. but i also eventually hit a wall and i get so many ideas that i hyperfocus on one until the steam is gone and then i hyperfocus on the next one to maintain that need to keep writing, accidentally leaving the last story in the dust for entirely too long. i also have clinical depression that comes and goes, which hasn't been super great mixed with covid and isolation, so more often recently, i find myself overly exhausted and despite wanting to write, can rarely get motivated to do so. so, pre-covid, wrote so much i left entirely too many stories dangling. during covid, i've just been reading and struggling to get myself focused enough to do what i love.
What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic? i appreciate the authenticity when possible, but i've recently been reading more about how native speakers of other languages feel when a) their language is butchered by google translate, or b) it's just not genuine in terms of how bilingual speakers act or speak.
What was the first fandom you’ve written for? it was smallville, but i remember adopting it out to someone else because i wasn't going to finish it. so if you look at my ffnet, the first fandom i wrote for appears to be x-men: the movie, but i remember writing a chloe/oliver story prior to that.
What’s your favorite fic that you’ve written? i have a lot. i mean, on ffnet, i have 576 stories, many of which were transferred over to ao3, with a lot of oneshots and drabbles getting joined together into collections. so there's a ton to pick from that span a 14-ish year timeline.
"you know I will adore you ('til eternity)" and "let me break (the walls that surround me)" hold a special place in my heart.
honestly, each story is important in its own way. there are bits and pieces of each that i love. every time i write something new it feels like my favorite. my best. and then a new idea comes along. there are scenes i've written that i loved more than the whole of what they became. lines that stand out that are almost too good to be a part of the larger picture.
one of my all time favorite passages i've written was bonnie's thoughts on damon and herself in 'if you love me (let me go)":
He is far from perfect. He is a novel of red, corrective ink. He is frayed pages and torn binding. His life, his choices, his mistakes leave lasting effects on everyone he meets.
She is a lifeboat with a hole in it. An anchor that drowns in the sea while everyone else remains steady above. She is both the calm and the storm, and while she screams that she will not be tamed, she cries. Bittersweet tears that go unnoticed and uncared about.
there are other stories, other pieces of dialogue, that i've been proud of. that make me laugh when i re-read them. that make me cry. and i love them. there are others that make me wilt and cringe and regret. it's a process. love and pride and growth, all bound together.
Tagging: @absentlyabbie, @anonymous033, and anyone else who'd like to fill this all out, haha

If they ever did ANOTHEr spin off like CSI did which I’m not saying I do or don’t want bc a lot of spin offs can be overkill BUT if they did where would you want to see it be set?
It would be funny to be set in New York City considering the main characters in lone star left New York. Imagine if it was about the station Owen and tk came from then everything realy would be super connected

Countdown to Day Zero
by Jay S. Jacobs January 18, 2008
With the ongoing conflict in the Middle East there have been rumblings that eventually the United States may have to reinstate the military draft. The film Day Zero takes this one step further – imagining what will happen after this occurs.
Day Zero focuses in on three New York-area friends who receive their draft notices. They have thirty days to get their lives in order before being shipped off to war.
George Rifkin (Chris Klein of American Pie) is a well-off lawyer whose thriving career and terminally ill wife (Ginnifer Goodwin) have him desperate to pull any strings to get out of the obligation.
James Dixon – played by Jon Bernthal, late of the sitcom The Class – is sort of the protector of the group. Though on a lower economic scale – he is working as a cabbie – he is the strongest and possibly most principled of the friends. Dixon actually believes that the cause is just; however he finds he does have something to lose when right before he is supposed to leave he falls for a pretty local schoolteacher (Elisabeth Moss of The West Wing.).
Aaron Feller (Elijah Wood of Lord of the Rings) is the most sensitive of the group, a neurotic writer who had a popular first book but seems unable to follow it up. Once his draft notice comes in, Aaron snaps, diving into a world of sex-for-sale, alcohol, drugs, tattoos and skinheads.
Bernthal has been making his way into the mainstream of show biz in the decade he has been working in TV and film. He has been in movies like World Trade Center and Tony ‘N’ Tina’s Wedding and has appeared in TV series such as CSI: Miami, Law and Order: SVU, How I Met Your Mother, Boston Legal and Without A Trace. In 2006-2007 he was a breakout character in the extremely hyped but ultimately short-lived sitcom The Class.
A few days before Day Zero was released to theaters; Bernthal was nice enough to give us a call to discuss the film.
Day Zero has a very controversial subject matter. What was it about the script that appealed to you? The character. I read the script and this was something I felt that I had to do. As soon as I put the script down, I was on a mission. I was writing letters to the producer and to the writer begging for an audition. You know, the way the state of affairs is in Hollywood in this day and age – guys like me don’t really get to play lead roles in movies… when you’re starting out like I am. I just knew that I had to play this part. I really wasn’t going to take no for an answer. I pretty much did everything but kick down their doors and force my way into the thing. (chuckles) As soon as I put the script down I knew I had to do it.
Between this film and World Trade Center you have been in two very dramatic films which revolve around Middle East terror and how it impacts us in the US. Now I know I’m stretching here a bit, but I saw in your bio that you were born and raised in Washington DC. Yes, I was.
Was your family in government? Did growing up in the environment of the city make this kind of political films more intriguing to you? You know, I don’t know. Somebody else just asked me a question sort of like that. Whether I feel like I’m more connected with 9/11 because I made these movies… or something like that. I think that what happened on 9/11 was the defining moment for this generation. I feel like all Americans are extremely connected with that. It’s a visceral gut connection that we have. It’s in all of our blood. It’s changed all of our lives. The answer to your question is that neither of my parents is in politics. But I knew many people whose parents were. A lot of my friends have since gone on into politics. So, yeah, I have a political conscience and I care deeply about it. I don’t necessarily know that growing up in DC made that happen.
Do you think the draft could ever really be reinstated? If it were, do you think you could go if called to duty? You know, I would love to say that I would. It’s the type of question that you can’t really answer until you’re in the situation. There are countries in the world [where] all people have to do military service. I think there is something extremely positive about that. This country affords us unbelievable opportunities. I’ve gotten so much out of this country. People in other countries wouldn’t believe the comfort and the opportunities that we have. I think giving back is really important. Politically, if there was a draft – if the military responsibility and burden was one that was shared by all – I think that we would be a lot more careful and a lot less quick to jump into things.
Dixon was sort of supposed to be the character who voiced the pro-war side of the debate. With the unpopularity of the war effort now was that a hard side to take? You know, no, I don’t think so, because I never really saw Dixon as a pro-war guy. He’s a New Yorker. Like I said before – 9/11 had an enormous effect on him. But, I think he’s a pro-America guy. He’s a patriot. People often mistake being a patriot for being a hawk. I think they are completely different. He feels a duty to his country. Like I said before, this country has afforded him a great opportunity. He cares deeply about his responsibility to his country, as he cares deeply about his responsibility to his friendships. When asked, he feels like he has to go. Being drafted is not an invitation. It’s an order. That’s where it lies, because so many times in his life until then, he has been called on to do things and he’s answered that call. It affects him so deeply that his friends sort of want to back out of it. It’s just something that sort of existed in their friendship when they were young.
Dixon was sort of the protector for the group. The three guys were probably never very similar and over the years they became more and more different. Why do you think that they stuck together? Well, I think like a lot of good friends that have known each other from [when they were] kids, your friendships are really solidified when you’re young. I’d like to think in this group, Dixon, in a way, was the glue. Dixon and these guys became friends very early on. They all went to a magnet school. The whole idea of Stuyvesant [High School – in New York City] is that it brings people from all sorts of socioeconomic and class differences, just based on the fact that if you are talented enough and a good enough student, you can go study there. Their friendships were made at an early enough stage and it is Dixon’s fierce loyalty to these guys that got him into trouble. When he went and fought Rifkin’s fight for him, they sent him off to a juvenile detention center. Yes, they started to go their different directions, but I feel like because Dixon made the sacrifice that he did, these guys also have a fierce loyalty to him. They’ve obviously gone out in different directions and career paths, but this connection was solidified when they were young and it’s something that can’t be broken. I love the fact that this external circumstance of being drafted solidifies them once again – puts them all in the proverbial same boat. Now they have to deal with it. It’s been something that they’ve been dealing with since they were young.
Although Aaron’s list obviously was a little disturbed [the Elijah Wood character makes a list of ten experiences he wants to have before going to war – i.e. see a peep show, get a tattoo, visit a prostitute], if you had thirty days of freedom left what things would you want to do? Hmm… That’s a good question. I guess I’d like to be around my family. Play a lot of basketball. Hang out with my dog. Be in the ocean. Man, I don’t know. I don’t know. That’s a really good question. I would want to enjoy myself and say everything that I could possibly say – to as many people who I love as I could.
I interviewed Elijah a couple of years ago and in real life he seems nice and basically harmless. Was it surprising to see the places he went with his character in the later scenes? Oh man, I was so excited to see it. Elijah is… you’re right; he’s such an extremely nice person. He’s such a professional. It’s just a dream to have him on set. When we were in New York one day, we were filming and a guy comes up to him – Elijah wasn’t facing the guy – and the guy kind of slaps Elijah in the back and asks for cigarette. He didn’t realize who he was. I immediately went to defend him, just because he’s a small guy and that’s no way to walk up to somebody. I sort of got in the guy’s face. Once the guy realized it was Elijah he’s like, ‘”Oh, man, Elijah…” Elijah hugged him and all that. I was like, man, this guy is so freaking nice! He’s such a nice guy. But, people get it confused. He’s an extremely talented actor. He’s wonderful at what he does. He’s so nice and so professional and so gracious… [but] I think there is no limit to the places that he can go. I really believe in him as an actor.
You just mentioned filming in New York. There was one scene you did with Chris Klein which appeared to be done during an actual anti-war rally. Yeah, it sure was.
What that like to be an actor in the midst of a real life event? Oh, man, that was magic. It was completely unplanned. It just happened to be near the location that we were shooting in. We just went guerrilla-style and just started taking all the equipment into the subways, trying to get in front of the march, set up our shots. We tried to get as much footage as we could in that march. It was such an unbelievable thing to be able to play off of. That energy was just amazing. It was weird, because that scene with the three of us the day before we were supposed to go – it never really made sense in rehearsals. We never really knew what that scene was about. But then when it was about us watching this protest it made complete sense. It’s just one of those movie-making magic events that really had resonance for all of us.
Despite the fact that your character was the one who believed that the cause was just and that it was his responsibility to go, even you were given a reason to question his service – meeting a woman. Why do you think it was important that he suddenly have something to lose at home? I think he has been showing this undying loyalty to people his whole life. It’s what I was talking about earlier with his friends. He feels the same way with his country. That being said, I’m not sure he’s ever felt what it feels like to have that unwavering, undying loyalty back to him. He falls in love with this woman. Not only does he fall in love with her, she’s a good woman. She shows him the kind of loyalty he’s been showing his friends his whole life. Even though he’s kept [his draft status] a secret from her, she says to him, “I love you and I’ll wait for you.” That’s something that just touched him in a way that he hadn’t been touched before. That was important because it put him in a… you know, the one thing about Dixon is he has piece of mind, because he lives by a code. Everything makes sense to him. He knows exactly how he’s going to react to any situation. He runs it through the priorities and the code with which he lives by and then makes a decision. This just totally fucked everything up. This made everything go haywire. He had to really make a decision, because his heart was being pulled in two ways. He had to figure it out. It’s really an incredible circumstance for [screenwriter] Rob [Malkani] to have come up with. It’s wonderful. It’s one of the key obstacles, the key dilemmas of the movie.
It was interesting to me that despite the fact that your character was the only one who was certain that he was right to be going to war; he never told his new girlfriend – or even to a lesser extent the little girl in the building who has a crush on him. Why do you feel he did that? Do you think this was a little cruel on his part? Yeah, I think that the scene with Lizzie Moss, where he finally does tell her, it’s the first time Dixon’s ever found himself in a situation where he didn’t know what to do next. He’s just sort of wavering in the wind. I think he’s averse to all weakness. To waver to him is to be completely weak. He was at a place of complete vulnerability and weakness in front of her. He screwed up. He knew he had screwed up. Look, it happened because he had met this wonderful girl and – you know there’s a lot in the movie that didn’t make it into the final cut, obviously. There was a whole storyline with her brother. Her brother had just been drafted, as well. It comes up in one of their first dates. It sort of puts him up against the wall. He doesn’t know whether to tell her or not. You go through that journey with him, whether he’s going to say it or not. That doesn’t come out in the movie. That’s why I love that movie so much. He fucked up. He screwed up. He should have said something and he didn’t.
I’m a big fan of Elisabeth Moss as well. I have to admit during all of your romantic scenes, I kept half-expecting the Secret Service to break in and take you somewhere so President Bartlett could give you a stern lecture. (Moss had played the President's daughter Zoey for several years on The West Wing.) (He laughs heartily.)
Seriously, what was she like to work with? A dream, man. A dream. I fell in love with her. Our first rehearsal I was in love. I was too big of a coward to send her flowers the next day, but I fell in love with her, man. I couldn’t wait to see her everyday on the set. She’s the best.
Last year you were a cast member of The Class – which was one of the big buzz shows of the season. How did you get the role and what was that like to work on? It was great. I loved everybody I worked with. The writers were great. I didn’t think I had a chance in hell of being in that show. It’s not the kind of acting that I normally do. The process of getting a network show, you go through a crazy long process of all sorts of auditions. So, I think one of the reasons I got it was because I thought there was no way I would get it. It took all the pressure off myself. (laughs) I totally didn’t feel like I fit in that world at all.
Well, like you said, you haven’t done all that much comedy. Do you find comedy harder than drama? No. I mean, look, I studied acting for stage. I studied in Russia for a few years. I have my MFA [Masters of Fine Arts] in acting here for stage. I feel like I’m pretty comfortable with whatever comes my way. The characters that that I’m super drawn to, the things that really excite me, are the heavy dramatic, really masculine roles.

This is what happens when worlds collide and I get a new headcanon on top of all the others I have. Just a little self indulgent piece.
This story comes to you from the depths of my imagination and these two imps that insisted on me to stick them together in the same air space.
Headcanon happened in an unexpected way. Even though Blue Bloods and CSI are not even in the same universe, it made sense for Nick and Frank to meet, seeing as I had this idea of Nick moving to NYC and starting to work at the New York Crime Lab under Mac Taylor, I imagined him meeting Frank and off the imps went (all of them).
Hope y'all will enjoy this and the impish boys that hopefully will make another appearance in another occasion.
Thanks @thethistlegirl for all the help you provided so this impish adventure could happen.

CSI: Rogers and Barnes- The Serious Cereal Serial Killer
Ch 6- Shots In The Dark Co-Written with @icanfeelastormbrewing
Episode Summary: Katie and Bucky head to the 99 to dig out some old case files that might help them on the case. Steve comes back to work, but he shouldn’t be there really, coz like he was banged up pretty bad. They go to a bar and there’s a fancy fireman called Johnny knocking around with the Nine-Nine crew. Steeby doesn’t like him…and it all kinda goes a bit wrong.
Episode Warnings: Bad Language words.
Episode Pairings: Steve Rogers x OFC Katie Stark (Yeah, it’s nice and friendly now…)
Song for Episode: New Rules by Dua Lipa
A/N: This entire series contains dark humour (CSI + Brooklyn 99=CSI Steeb) Avengers and Stark Spangled Banner Easter Eggs and jokes. You don’t need to have read the SSB series to understand or enjoy this, but we’ve used the Universe to spin this off from so somethings might puzzle a few of you if you ain’t, but feel free to ask. Also, our knowledge of American Policing and Brooklyn is limited, so bear with us if we slip up, but at the end of the day this is a fiction so we’ll claim any mistakes as creative license!!
Enter the NINE-NINE! We’ve used a lot of quotes from the series, that we know are not in their original settings but just indulge us because dammnit, it made us laugh!!
As always we live for re-blogs and comments
CSI Rogers and Barnes Master List
Main Masterlist
“And the wanderer returns!” Jake Peralta greeted Katie warmly as he stepped out of the elevator to greet her at the front desk of the 99 Precinct Building. “Good to see you Jake!” She beamed, giving him a hug before she stepped back “This is Sergeant James Barnes, or Bucky.” “Pleased to meet you.” Bucky said, grasping his hand. “So how’s DC treating you?” Jake asked as they stepped into the elevator. “Not bad.” Katie shrugged “The work is good but, well it’s not home ya know?” Bucky shot her a side glance, that was the first time he had heard her admit that she missed Brooklyn, and he had a feeling that her reconciliation with Steve had something to do with it. “Well you know what they say?” Peralta smiled “You can take the girl outta Brooklyn” “And then bring her back” Bucky quipped, earning him a dig in his ribs. The elevator door opened and they stepped out into the open plan office and Bucky winced at the cacophony of noise that hit his ears. Katie grinned and hugged a smaller, short haired man before she moved on to an Auburn haired woman, and then smiled and fist bumped a taller, darker haired lady. “Hey Diaz.”
“Stark.” The woman’s face flickered into a grin as she pulled Katie into a hug “good to see you”
“Wait a minute. Are we hugging?” Katie pulled back “Have we ever done this before?”
“No,” Diaz replied “And if you tell anyone, I’ll slit your throat.”
Katie laughed. “Does Terry get a hug?” Bucky looked up to see an absolute unit of a man strolling towards them. The man was dressed in a normal shirt, with a tie and suspenders but Bucky couldn’t help but stare because, well, he was fucking huge. He was even bigger than Steve and that was saying something. “Oh Terry gets a hug!” Katie laughed, stepping forward again. “Good, coz Terry missed Katie…” “Does he always refer to himself in the 3rd person? Bucky turned to the shorter man. “Oh yes.” He nodded “I’m Boyle by the way” “Bucky.” He said, shaking his hand.
“So…” Jake turned to them “All the boxes and case notes are ready in the archive rooms down stairs. I would have brought them to you but my cars in the shop so I rode in on Rosa’s motorcycle. I guess you could say I’m a gear head now.” he nodded, clearly pleased with himself. “He held on to me so tight it was like a two-mile Heimlich.” Diaz shot back, where she was lounging in her chair, phone sandwiched between her ear and her shoulder “No I won’t hold…”
“Those things have no walls on them!” Jake hissed as he walked to his desk “Let me just grab my breakfast and we’ll head down…” “Are those gummy bears wrapped in a fruit roll-up?” Bucky looked at him in horror as he picked up the film wrapped item.
“Breakfast burrito, but yeah” Peralta shrugged as they headed to the elevator.
“I pity your dentist.” Bucky shook his head.
“Joke’s on you. I don’t have a dentist.” Jake shot back as they all headed towards the elevator.
“Not so fast…” a deep voice said, and Bucky spun round to see the 99’s commanding officer, Captain Holt striding across the floor. “I believe Sergeant Stark has one more person she needs to say hi to.”
Katie narrowed her eyes playfully “Why? Is Cheddar here?”
“Who’s Cheddar?” Bucky asked.
“Holt’s corgi.” Peralta supplied
Holt’s face twitched, into what Bucky supposed you could call a smile, maybe, as the man stuck his arm out and formally shook Katie’s hand.
“Good to see you again. Congratulations on the promotion.” Holt said “I knew you’d get your break eventually.” “Thank you sir.” she smiled.
He nodded at her and then turned to look out over the office. “Ok 99, I just had an email. Our monthly crime statistics are due. I want paperwork on all your closed cases by tomorrow. Scully, you can just write ‘I didn’t close any’ on a piece of paper.”
Bucky looked around to see two, rather large (and by large he meant fat) men sat at desks, both eating some form of wrap. One of them, the one with the strange hair cut that made him look like he had a lego doll head looked up.
“What? I’m confused…” he said slowly.
“Huh.” Holt raised an eyebrow “From your expression, I would have guessed constipated. Or chilly.”
Bucky heard Katie snigger besides him as a nasaly voice from the Auburn haired woman cut across the office.
“Hey, Craptain, you ready to get curb stomped?” “What?” Jeffords’ eyes shot up.
“At chess.” Gina looked at him.
“We have a weekly match. I’m teaching Gina to play. And she, in turn, is teaching me to trash talk.” Holt said, waving his hand in explanation before he turned to Gina “The hospital called. Your test results came back positive. You’re a stage five dumbass.”
Katie looked at Peralta before the pair of them burst out laughing as Gina stood there, nodding, like a proud sensei.
“Oh! You have come so far.”
Bucky simply stood there, mouth hanging open. What the fuck had Stark dragged him into. He dug her in the ribs with his elbow and as she turned to look at him, he shook his head “This…this is…” “The Nine-Nine.” Katie said, fondly “And you spent 5 years here?” Bucky looked at her in disbelief.
“Actually it was just over 6.” Katie said “I moved to the 101 a year after dad died when the opportunity came up to train as a Profiler. I do miss them all though, and their little quirks…which reminds me…Hey” She turned to Jeffords who was now sat at his desk. “Still writing Fan Fiction Terry?” “Fan Fiction…” Bucky dead panned.
“Well, shows and films leave Terry wanting more.” Sergeant Jeffords shrugged “I’m just filling in the gaps.”
Just when he didn’t think shit could get any weirder… Bucky blinked.
“So what grabbed your imagination this time?” Katie continued
“He’s actually writing an original piece.” Boyle smiled.
Terry grinned “Yeah, about a group of super heroes, who save New York from aliens…”
“Let me guess…” Bucky grumbled and they turned to face him “They all dress in lycra and have capes?”
“Not all of them.” Terry looked at him. “Only one has a cape and only one dresses in Lycra, the others are in leather apart from one who is a kind of beast when he gets angry and the other has a flying, metal suit and…”
“Why can’t anyone make super heroes normal people who wear normal clothes?” Bucky shook his head.
“They don’t sit on their couches in their superhero outfits.” Terry looked at him, frowning “They’re normal on their downtime…”
“What is it with you and superhero costumes?” Katie looked at him.
Bucky shrugged “It’s just all, oh I dunno, ostentatious…” “Says the man who owns a rhinestone encrusted denim jacket, yeah, I heard…Steve told me about it ages ago.”
Bucky smirked and shrugged “It’s from the 90s, it was the fashion when we were a kid.” “Hmmm.” Katie pondered, before she looked back at Terry “You’ll have to email me a copy when it’s done.” “Will do, Terry always likes feedback.” “And Katie likes to read, speaking of which…” she patted Buck’s chest with the back of her hand “We need to get digging into those files, Buck.”
He agreed and Katie turned to Peralta. “Lead the way…not that I don’t know where it is but…”
She was cut off by a loud squeal and she spun to see a dark haired uniformed woman, hair pulled back into a ponytail. Bucky just caught the name “Santiago” on her tag before Katie wrapped her in a hug.
“Oh my God!” Santiago smiled, “I knew you were back in town but…”
“I know I should have called…and I’m sorry Amy but, we got a lot to get through so I need to get to it. But, Romanoff suggested a night out. You too Diaz?”
“Drinks sound good” Diaz nodded.
“The Compound? This weekend?” Katie asked “Sure I can wrangle us the VIP treatment seeing as the owner is practically my sister in law.” ““I am sooo up for that!” Santiago grinned “There’s nothing better after a long shift than going to The Compound It’s like Cheers, where everybody knows your name”
Diaz looked at her “A place where everybody knows your name is hell. You’re describing hell.”
******
The doors of the elevator opened and Katie emerged from it followed by Bucky who was carrying a box with the files they had brought from the 99. Thankfully, out of the three boxes Peralta had provided on Rumlow’s case, they had been able to reduce the files with meaningful information to only one.
“Is Stevie’s office open, Wanda? Need to pop these files somewhere safe.” Katie said once they were close enough to the reception desk counter.
Bucky saw Wanda’s eyebrows squeeze together in a wrinkle and her mouth twist with annoyance at Katie’s use of Steve’s pet name. He could tell she was pissed. And to be honest, he was also surprised at the new situation. How Stark had gone from hating the Captain’s guts and going haywire at him calling her sweetheart, to easily referring to him as Stevie, and in public none the less, was something that he couldn’t quite grasp. But then again the dynamic between those two was unique, which was the polite way of putting it.
“Yeah, it’s open. He’s in there.” she answered trying to conceal her animosity.
“What?” Katie shrieked and Wanda shrugged. She turned to Bucky “Can you believe that?”
Bucky just shook his head and muttered “Punk” as both headed for the Captain’s office. They were about to barge in when the door suddenly opened. Steve, who was carrying a cardboard cup holder with two coffee cups, had to raise his right hand above his head to avoid scalding both detectives with the hot liquid.
“Whoooa, easy there!” his voice faltered at the end as his ribs complained at the sudden movement.
“What the fuck, Steve!” Katie shouted “You should be resting at home, you’re still healing.”
“She’s right, punk.” Bucky added as he made his way past Steve to leave the box on the desk. “What? You don’t think we can handle this without you?”
“That’s … that’s not…” he said turning and glaring at Bucky but stopped when he saw an amused expression on Bucky’s face “Enjoying yourself?” he asked and Bucky nodded and laughed.
Steve sighed and turned to Katie who was still at the door arm crossed and he smiled softly, his bruised face lighting up as he spoke.
“I’m ok, sweetheart. Just have to remember not to move like I’m a cheerleader.”
“Now, that’s an image I don’t want imprinted in my brain.” Bucky mused leaning on Steve desk as he prepared for the storm to unravel.
“What’s in the box?” Steve asked.
“Files from the 99.” Bucky said as he watched Katie who was still observing Steve with narrowed eyes.
“Well don’t leave them there, take them into the incident room.” Steve said, “It’s safe enough, we can lock it and-“
At that point Bucky saw Katie’s eyes flicker like a light bulb, the way they did when her brain was trying to spot the missing link and she interrupted him.
“Wait! How did you get here? You can’t have possibly driven yourself.” she said tilting her head, staring at him like he was the suspect of a petty theft. “Oh, you didn’t ride the bike, did you? Steven, tell me you didn’t ride that old, dusty piece of junk!” she carried on ranting.
“What bike?” Bucky inquired now curious while taking a packet of gummy bears Peralta had given him out of his jacket pocket.
“An old bike my father had. Tony doesn’t like bikes so he passed it on to Steve.” Katie explained “It’s a rattletrap…”
“It’s not a rattletrap.” Steve protested “And it’s unique, the handlebars are made from Vibranium. You should show more respect for Howard’s legacy.” he said pointing at her like she was a little brat.
“Whatever.” she said rolling her eyes. “Are you going to tell me how you got here?”
“Sam drove me. He called to tell me he had news on Ross report, he said he was in the area so I made him pick me up.”
Bucky saw Katie’s stance relax a bit with Steve’s explanation but suddenly her eyes darted to him, and he would be lying if he said he wasn’t a bit scared.
“Who did you say you had breakfast with before we went to the 99?” she asked Bucky with a sly glance.
“I didn’t say.” Bucky said, putting a bunch of gummy bears in his mouth before he diverted the conversation to Steve again.
“You shouldn’t be here, Steve. You’re convalescing”
Steve sighed, lowered his head for some seconds, a demeanour Bucky could read like the back of his hand. Steve felt tired and lost, he needed to go back to his natural element.
"Look” he said raising his head again, the hand that wasn’t holding the drinks dropped to his hip and he looked at Bucky “I’m tired of being at home doing nothing but watching TV and thinking. I can’t even go for my morning run or go to the gym to blow some steam against a punching bag. I know I should be more relaxed now than ever, but I’m not. Doing nothing is driving me crazy. Surely being in the station can’t be that physically demanding?”
Bucky felt a pang of guilt at his friend’s word. Steve was right. Bucky knew that Steve, for as long as he could remember, had always wanted to do what was right. Even if sometimes that meant a bunch of dumbass decisions. The Captain wasn’t one for sitting back and doing nothing. He even had bags under his eyes and Katie must have noticed too since she asked him
“Trouble sleeping?”
Steve turned to look at her with a huge smile on his face and a sparkle of something in his eyes, Bucky could tell from the way he was standing.
“You could say that.” he replied.
Katie returned the smile and they both simply stood looking at one another for what seemed like way more time than should be acceptable. Bucky suddenly felt like he was a fly on the wall, so trying not to step on the moment, he grabbed the box of files and made to leave the office.
“I will be in my desk if you…” he said when he walked past Katie but she wasn’t noticing him, she was still locked in eye contact with Steve.
“Whatever.” he mumbled and headed for his desk “I feel like I’m invisible. I’m turning into Steve when he was a skinny punk.”
“Now, you’re talking to yourself Barnes.” Natasha said walking from the kitchen followed by Sam, Clint and Wanda.
“Who are you, Regina George and her clique?” Bucky bit back while he dropped the box onto his desk and took off his jacket.
Steve chose that point to walk out into the office
“Sam, Barnes and Stark are back.” the Captain spoke striding towards Bucky’s desk, signalling the man over from where he was perched on the edge of Natasha’s desk. Katie headed to her own, and dropped her purse down, slinging her jacket over her chair. “Can you fill us on the new details about Ross’ PM report?”
“Can I go fetch a coffee first?” Katie pleaded as Sam stood up. “It’ll be real quick, promise.”
“Oh, shit, here” Steve said quietly handing her one of the take out coffee cups he had brought from his office and completely forgotten about “I got you your regular on the way. Your round tomorrow.”
In all honesty Steve had been a little nervous buying that coffee. It had been something they had always done, buying each other a drink on the way in, alternating on days. But since she had returned and they hadn’t been on good terms it had clearly fallen by the wayside. Since the air had cleared yesterday he’d decided to chance it and see how it was received but he needn’t have worried. Katie positively beamed at him before she blurted out “God, I love you.”
Steve felt his neck growing warm as all eyes turned to them and he saw Katie’s own cheeks flush and she sipped from the cup trying to hide her embarrassment “Suri’s Vanilla Lattes are the best.” she said in an over the top, dramatic voice “Oh, how I have missed them!”
"You’re welcome, I think.” Steve said, now full on blushing as he rubbing the back of his neck.
Bucky tried to divert the attention from the pair of dorks before Wanda choked on her own bile and Natasha or Clint made a snarky comment.
“I’m waiting. What, you didn’t bring one for me?” he asked and from the corner of his eye he saw Natasha shaking her head at him disapprovingly. He glanced at Steve who was now flushing even more and that was when he realized he had made it worse by drawing even more attention to the fact that Steve had, in effect, displayed favouritism, whether he meant to or not.
“You want in Barnes you can buy the next round then.” Katie quipped and he glanced at her as she perched on the edge of her desk.
“Fair enough…” he shrugged, and then his attention was taken by Sam who was looking at something on his desk with curiosity.
“You like cats?” Sam asked taking Dot and examining her.
“It’s not a cat. It’s a goat and it’s called Dot.” Bucky said with annoyance. How the fuck could anyone mistake a goat for a cat?
Steve groaned and urged Sam to start with the report details so they could move on with the investigation.
“What? Dude has a cat on his desk and you don’t want to know why?” Sam asked Steve. "Looks like a cat.“ he shrugged now looking at Bucky.
"I think it looks like a llama.” Katie quipped and Clint’s laugh could be heard all through the floor.
Steve groaned again rubbing his forehead but before he could make one of his famous pep talks, Sam interrupted him.
“All right, before Steve McQueen here’s head blows up…the hair we got on Ross’ trousers?” he offered, opening the folder he was carrying and examining the report.
“Yeah?” Steve asked.
“Funny enough, its goat.” the doctor explained.
Everyone went silent, looking at each other, before Katie let out a laugh and turned to Bucky.
“Maybe we should ask Dot if she knew Ross.”
“Fuck off Stark.” Bucky rolled his eyes, grinning.
“Oooh, maybe she did it…” Katie continued “I mean, do you know her whereabouts that night?”
“You’re hilarious.” Bucky deadpanned, shaking his head.
“Ok. Anything else?” Steve asked Sam, cutting across the pair of them.
“Nope. That’s all I’ve got so far. Got you a copy of the updated report.” he said handing the folder to Steve.
“Thanks, Sam” he said and the Doctor just nodded and patted Dot’s head with his index finger before heading away.
“Romanoff, Barton, start working on a link between Ross and …” Steve paused for a moment trying to sound as professional as possible “…a goat.“
Katie choked slightly and then coughed as Bucky looked at her, before they both started to snigger slightly. Steve rolled his eyes at the pair of them. They were like school kids.
"Right away, Cap.” Natasha nodded.
“It would be my genuine pleasure, Cap.” Clint added, nodding to his computer “Searching for goat farms as we speak. God I’d like to have a farm someday.”
“Buck, you and Katie start with those files. I’ve got a tele-conference with Fury to give him an update so I’ll join you as soon as I can.”
Bucky gave him a salute as he turned and started making his way towards his office.
“Stevie, I got your…” Wanda called out for him before he went away but she was cut off by Steve’s fiery look.
“It’s Steve, Wanda.” he said sternly.
“Yes. Sorry Steve” she said gulping “I just wanted to give you your mail.”
“Thanks.” Steve said, slightly less curtly but still with a slight edge to his voice as he took the items from her.
Bucky saw her walk as fast as she could towards the restroom and he shared a quick significant glance with Steve who just shook his head and turned towards his office. He then looked at Katie who simply stood and picked up the box from his desk as she headed towards the Incident Room. Finally he looked in Natasha’s direction who nodded at him as if confirming they were on the same page-Rogers and Stark were back on full speaking and, so it seemed, full flirting terms.
***** “So as Jake and I explained before the victim was a woman called Sara Klein.” Katie spoke as Bucky spread the papers across the large table. “She was walking home from a bar when she was dragged into an alley and raped.”
“And you think the perp was…this Rumlow guy?” Bucky asked, looking down at a mug shot of a man with dark hair and dark eyes. “Who was a Uniform in the 99?”
“Yeah.” Katie said
“So what made you suspect him?”
“When we took Klein to the Rape Centre for her forensic examination he was there, don’t ask me what for. When she came back from the examination room she heard him talking and literally stated shaking and became hysterical.” Katie paused for a moment “We got her back to the station, calmed her down and that was when she said she recognised his voice…”
At that point Steve walked into the room and they both looked at him, and he gestured for them to continue.
“Peralta and I went to speak to Captain Holt, you know, given the sensitivity of it. He told us to bring Rumlow in for questioning and that he would speak to Fury. Obviously he denied it, said she must have been mistaken bla bla bla but Peralta and I didn’t believe a word of it, I know he did it.”
She trailed off and Bucky looked at Steve who gently laid a hand on her shoulder “He knows.” he looked at her as her head snapped up and her eyes locked onto his “I told him what Rumlow did to you, I’m sorry but I was trying to explain the Sitwell situation and…” For a moment Steve feared she was going to blow up at him but she didn’t. Instead she sighed and shrugged “It’s not exactly a secret anyway…” she wiped at her eyes and Steve gently rubbed her back before she jumped off the desk and walked to the wall, looking at the various bits of notes and evidence.
“Long and short of it, Bucky, is that we had no forensics of any sort to link Rumlow to the rape, no DNA left behind, nothing that wasn’t circumstantial…and then up pops Sitwell to provide an alibi that we didn’t believe for a second. But before we had chance to discredit it, Sara turned up and said she wanted to withdraw her allegation. Said that she’d confided in someone, we never did find out who, and they’d given her all these statistics on how many rape cases actually ended in a conviction and that was it, she didn’t want to put herself through it. Nothing we said or did could convince her otherwise.”
“So Rumlow basically carried on like nothing had happened…” Bucky said, leaning back in his chair. “Well his reputation was in tatters, mud sticks…” Katie said, turning to look at him “He pretty much became a social pariah around the force. And then when he assaulted me he was kicked out, well, told to resign…”
Bucky stayed silent as Steve gently reached over to look at the paper work on the desk.
“So has anything turned up in any of this that can link Ross to Sitwell?” he asked, glancing up at them both.
“Not so far.” Bucky shook his head “But we haven’t even scratched the surface.”
“Well until we have anything concrete to go on it’s as good a train of thought as any.” Steve said. “Maybe it’s worth digging into Sitwell’s background a little more. Schools, Universities, dodgy handshake clubs, that kind of stuff, see if we can link him to Ross that way.”
“Say we do make a link…” Bucky said, leaning back in his chair, eyeing Katie “Gut feeling Stark, is this connected to the Rumlow case?”
“I dunno.” she shrugged “But one thing’s for sure, something stinks about all of this. And I don’t believe in co-incidences.”
“Me neither doll face.” Bucky mumbled, dodging the whiteboard pen she sent flying his way.
******
Three hours and a couple of sandwiches later Bucky and Katie had decided to call it a day. They had gone through Rumlow’s case again and needed a home cooked dinner and a good night’s sleep before they started digging on Sitwell’s school records the following day.
“Ok. My brain is fried. I’m heading home and praying for Tony not being there yet. Wish me luck.”
Bucky smiled at Katie over the screen of his computer. He saw her stand up from her chair and cross her fingers in the air before walking to the restroom. He was saving the documents on his computer and turning it off when he heard Steve.
“Anything significant?”
“Nope.” Bucky said leaning back on his chair and stretching his arms above his head. “Enough for today. And you too, Steve. Finish that coffee you’re drinking and I’ll drive us home.”
Steve nodded and turned around when he heard Katie’s voice from behind him.
“You shouldn’t even be here. Go home and rest, Stevie.” she said casually.
Bucky raised an eyebrow at Steve who rolled his eyes, but he turned to Katie when she let out a little squeal and saw her waving her phone in the air.
“Nat, Wanda come here! Got a message from Diaz!” she said excitedly “GIRL’S NIGHT OUT FRIDAY. How does that sound? She says Amy and Gina are coming too.”
“I’m in” Natasha said grinning at Bucky and turning to Wanda, who had also gathered around Katie’s desk, for confirmation.
“I don’t think I can… I’m sorry.” Wanda hesitated before adding “My cat is sick.”
“Your cat?” Nat asked her with sly eyes.
“Whatever…” Katie rolled her eyes and leant over her desk to switch off her computer “I’m only asking because I’m not petty enough to leave one person out” she muttered only for Bucky to hear.
“Leave it.” Bucky whispered back as he saw Wanda frown and open her mouth to retort to Katie’s initial eye roll and he gave Steve a warning look.
“Wanda.” Steve stepped in “Come to my office. There are some reports I want you to file before you go.” and he started walking away as she followed obediently.
“Ok. I’ll text Diaz saying we’re in Nat. Dinner and The Compound?” Katie asked while grabbing her jacket and purse.
“Perfect. And I’ll convince the little witch.” Nat nodded.
Katie just pursed her lips and nodded before waving everyone goodbye and walking away.
“Ok. All hands on deck. Clint come here!” Nat said her eyes shining with the excitement of plotting. “Barnes. Engage phase 2. We’re going out and we’ll be at the Compound after dinner, I’ll confirm our ETA as we go. You two bring Rogers and I’ll make sure Stark is a little bit intoxicated by then.” she said winking at Bucky.
“I’ll call Peralta, if Santiago is gonna be there, he’ll be up for it. See who else he can drag in.” Clint offered.
“Ok Buck, I’m ready. We can go now” Steve said and looked at them sensing he had stepped into something “Am I interrupting something here?”
“Nah. Nat was telling us the girls’ plans for Friday.” Bucky brushed him off.
“Oh, so you’re finally going out?” Steve smirked at Nat who rolled her eyes at his dig that it had taken her so long to organise something with Katie “But, you do know you and Stark are on call this weekend as Barton and Barnes have done the last two?”
“That we did.” Clint quipped
“It’s ok boss. We’ll behave.” Nat drawled as she spotted Wanda had returned to the reception desk. “Gotta go do something. See ya fellas.”
Steve sighed and shook his head at Bucky “Lets go, Buck. Bye Barton.”
******
“You’re a pain in the ass. No, you’re worse than a pain in the ass, you know that?” Bucky said while closing the car door after getting into the left back seat of Sam’s grey Mercedes Class C.
“What’s the deal?” Sam asked looking at Steve who was now fastening the seat belt of the passenger seat. Perks of being the Captain and still on recovery.
“He’s been grumpy all day. He didn’t want to come.” Bucky explained.
“I told you, I’m on duty this weekend.” Steve said turning his head to look at Bucky as Sam pulled away from the curb in front of Steve’s block.
And he was being truthful, he was the senior officer on call. It had been Holt’s turn last week, but as Bucky pointed out the chances of getting called in were low. Katie was the on duty Sergeant supported by Natasha and God forbid either of them would admit they couldn’t handle any possible situation and had to call their superior in.
“You have more chances of getting laid tonight than being called in tomorrow.” Clint deadpanned from the right back seat.
Steve groaned which made Sam chuckle and give a significant look to the men at the back through the rear-view mirror.
“Where are we going?” Steve asked trying to change the subject.
“We’re picking up Thor” Sam explained.
“And then?” Bucky asked “I’m hungry.”
“Yeah, what’s new? You’re always hungry.” Steve snorted.
“Tell me about it.” Clint scoffed. “I spent all day with him yesterday visiting goat farms upstate. Dude ate a donut dorito hot dog pizza all rolled up like a burrito! Can you believe it?” Clint asked leaning forward to speak to Steve and Sam.
“Hey, I was just optimizing my time.” Bucky shrugged and the three men shook their heads.
“We could stop at Grimaldi’s to have pizza and beers, feed the bastard. Then we’ll drop into the Compound.” Sam suggested.
Both Bucky and Sam nodded in agreement with the plan. Steve groaned again. He was worried about the case being in a deadlock. After two days of digging, they had nothing solid on Sitwell’s connection to Ross yet. Last thing he needed, if he was being honest, was taking care of a bunch of drunk friends and, what was more, he wasn’t gonna drive any of them home, it was Sam’s car after all, he had called designated driver. But then it dawned on him, they were going to the Compound and the girls would be there, wouldn’t they? Suddenly his spirits were lifted and a soft smile crossed his face. But he was snapped from his thoughts again by Bucky.
“Look, I know you’re pissed. You’re still sore from the accident, I get it.” Bucky started to scold him but was interrupted by Sam.
“We’re here. Can someone text him?” Sam announced pulling in a spot in front of Thor’s building.
“Got it.” Clint offered pulling out his phone.
He unclasped the car belt and moved closer to Bucky so as to leave space for Thor in the backseat while fiddling with his phone. Bucky stirred in his seat feeling suddenly trapped.
“Can you move your seat up?” he asked Sam
“No” Sam said without even flinching a muscle on his face.
“Asshole.” Bucky muttered.
He looked at Steve who seemed to be lost in his thoughts and then he turned to look at Clint who kept on texting on his phone.
“Ok. Peralta says he’s meeting us at the Compound. He’s having dinner with some video games buddies now but he’ll meet us later.” Clint informed the rest.
“Will Tony be there?” Steve asked suddenly.
“Of course he will” Clint snorted. “He clocks in day in and day out.”
“Yeah, Pepper has him wrapped around her finger.” Sam added nodding.
“Women.” Bucky sighed looking at his Captain who was looking at the front stoic as ever.
“Greetings, morons!”
Thor’s voice reverberated in the cabin of the car as he sat in the only free seat and closed the door grinning. Everyone greeted him back and Sam started the car again.
“Why are you carrying an umbrella?” Clint asked Thor “It isn’t even cloudy.”
“Oh! It’s my lucky charm.” he said happily. “My lucky umbrella, my father gave it to me when I was a kid.”
“This is the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard.” Steve mused from the front seat.
“And a mistake. I mean are you gonna be attached to your lucky charm all night?” Sam asked, hands on the steering wheel.
“I make grave mistakes all the time, everything seems to work out in the end.” Thor shrugged and tapped Steve on the shoulder. “Captain, what are you doing here? I thought you were still recovering from your car crash. You should be sitting at home in your bathrobe, eating grapes.“
"Yeah, or plums.” Bucky added. “Don’t encourage him. He is enough grumpy as it is.”
“Yeah, not helping blondie.” Clint quipped.
“You’re so petty and tiny.” Thor scoffed.
They continued picking on one another for the rest of the journey and the time they spent at the pizza restaurant. Two hours later the five of them were at the main entrance to the Compound, one of the most popular clubs in Brooklyn in the last few years. The club was run by Pepper, Tony’s fiancé, so they were greeted warmly by Happy, the doorman, who let them in immediately after a short informal chat.
“Welcome, Gentlemen” Pepper greeted the group who had now approached the bar where she was chatting idly with Tony. “What a sight for sore eyes, Steve!” she added now kissing Steve on the cheek.
“Yeah, what brings you here Capsicle? Last time I checked you were in a hospital bed looking like shit.” Tony asked Steve.
“Yeah, Katie told us about it.” Pepper interjected signalling between her and Tony. “How are you now? Are you ok? Is there anything I can bring you?”
“I’m fine Pepper, honestly thank you, just a few cuts and bruises. And a glass of water would be great, thanks.”
“Water coming right up.” said Pepper gesturing for the barman to come and take their orders.
“Water, Rogers?” Tony mocked him. “Beers for all for starters. That’s on me and I’m buying a bottle of the best champagne we have so meet me in our private booth when you’re done.”
The group cheered happily at Tony’s offer and sat on the bar stools waiting for their drinks.
A pretty blonde waitress placed a glass of water and a beer bottle on the bar in front of Steve and winked at him, who obliviously took a painkiller from the blister and swallowed it with a bit of water. He didn’t want to take it but the constant bickering of his friends and the loud music and dim lights of the club were making his head pound.
He was sipping from his beer bottle when someone slapped his back causing him to wince at the pain.
“Hey, Rogers. Nice to see you man!” Peralta greeted.
“Hey, Jake. How you doin’?” Steve greeted back with a sincere smile while Peralta nodded and fist bumped Clint.
“Did you come alone?” Clint asked him.
“Yeah, but meeting a friend at some point tonight. He’s working until later.” Peralta answered as he shook hands with Bucky and Sam. “Barnes, good to see you again. Wilson?”
“Hey man.” Sam nodded, and Peralta looked beyond him towards Thor who was scanning the dance floor while moving his head and feet to the beat of the music.
“Oh, you brought Point Break.” Peralta quipped, turning to Clint.
“Yeah, you can’t get rid of him easily, especially if we’re talking about revels.” Clint commented.
“Revels?” Peralta asked frowning.
“A Party, that’s what he calls it.” Sam offered.
“Wow, and I thought Holt had a weird vocabulary.” Peralta muttered.
A little while later Thor had disappeared onto the dance floor and the rest were already on their second beer while chatting animatedly. Steve was beginning to regret having mixed alcohol and meds. Feeling a bit lightheaded, he was seriously considering calling a cab and going home when he heard Peralta whistle through his teeth and Bucky let out a breathy curse.
“Damned.”
“What?” he asked turning around to ask what was going on. They were both looking at the back of the Compound, towards the booths and that was when he noticed what had taken their attention. Katie was stood side on to them, talking to Tony. She was dressed in a dark blue short jumpsuit that sported a large white flowered pattern and a plunge neck line that dipped almost to her navel. Her shoes were high heeled black sandals with a silvery cuff round the ankle and as she turned to say something to Natasha, Steve saw that the back of the jumpsuit was bare bar where the fabric crossed across to each shoulder from the opposite hip.
God she looked gorgeous, scratch that, she looked more than gorgeous.
“Fuck!” Steve cursed when he noticed his beer had been dribbling down his front. He took a pair of cocktail napkins and tried to dry his shirt while Bucky, Peralta and Sam cackled at him. He groaned and continued wiping as Bucky put one arm over his shoulder.
“Keep it cool, man. It’s not like you don’t know what’s under those clothes.” he said in a low voice, winking at Steve.
“Shut up, Bucky.” Steve snapped but had to do as told as the girls were approaching the bar.
“Hey fellas.” Natasha drawled, “You coming over to join us?”
“Once Rogers has dried off, yeah.” Clint said.
Diaz looked at him, frowning. “Dried off.” “Yeah someone nudged me and I spilt…” he said, gesturing to the front of his shirt.
Katie shrugged “Can’t see anything, your shirt’s black.”
“It’s nice.” Wanda nodded, looking at Steve. He took a deep breath, thinking back to what Bucky had said and merely smiled at the woman politely. Behind Wanda he saw Diaz and Natasha exchange a smirk. Katie, however, was focussed on something else.
“Is that the one I bought you for your birthday last year?” Katie asked, reaching out to gently run her hand over the collar, and Steve nodded and didn’t miss the scowl on Wanda’s face. Totally oblivious to the daggers she was being given, Katie grinned “Wanda’s right, it looks good.”
He smiled at her and then turned politely to Wanda who had said something to him, and Bucky watched as Katie’s eyes lingered on them both for a little longer her eyebrow raised, almost in amusement at the other woman’s attempts to flirt with Steve fell flat.
“You want Stevie to go into cardiac arrest or something?” Buck leaned over to talk into her ear and she turned to look at him “The man is drugged and on alcohol and then you come along looking like that.”
“Fuck off Bucky.” Katie bit back “I wore this because it makes me feel good, you asshole, not for anyone else. And it’s not like I knew you were coming. Why are you guys even here anyway?”
“Boys’ night out” Bucky shrugged.
Katie raised an eyebrow at him “Yeah, of all the places you could pick to go you just…”
At that she stopped and her head cocked to one sided as she caught the first beats of a song playing.
“Oh, God!” she squealed. Bucky was just about to ask her what was going on but he was too late, she leaned towards Steve and gently grabbed his hand, turning his attention away from Wanda as she curled her hand round his.
“Stevie, listen.”
A big mischievous grin crossed Steve’s face when he heard the song and next thing he knew he was being dragged by Katie to the dance floor. Leaving Wanda slack jawed with frustration.
“What the fuck? Is he dancing?” Bucky asked Clint and Nat who were stood at the bar next to him, unable to keep his eyes from Katie and Steve dancing and laughing like crazy to I’ll be there for you by The Rembrandts.
“Yeah, they always dance to this, it’s like their song.” Clint answered before sipping from his beer bottle.
“Give him a minute, he will do his Joey.” Natasha told Bucky while keeping an eye on Wanda who had just sidled back into the booth and was now pouting and stabbing the bar with her cocktail umbrella. At that Steve launched into some kind of odd dance move, which he still manage to make look quite graceful “Oh, yep. There we go.”
“Unbelievable” Bucky mused shaking his head, happy to see his bestie cut loose. “She really brings out that kid from Brooklyn, doesn’t she?”
“You could say that.” Nat said with a side smile while Clint nodded in agreement. They all watched as one of Steve’s arms curled round Katie’s waist, his large hand splaying on her back as they continued to dance around to the upbeat music, Katie’s head tipped back in laughter and a huge grin spread across Steve’s face.
At that point Bucky heard Wanda snort and strut down the club to the restrooms bumping into people on her way.
“Ah leave her.” Natasha said with a sigh, draining her glass.
“So Rogers has two women fighting over him…” Peralta leaned back “Lucky bastard.” “He’s eyes for no one but Stark.” Bucky said, shrugging “So wouldn’t really call it a fight.” “Well, to be honest, I wouldn’t really want to get in a fight with Stark anyway…” Peralta nodded. “Damned she can be vicious.”
***** A few hours later they were all sat together in Tony’s private booth drinking champagne, except for Katie who had finished her drink and had gone dancing with Rosa and Gina, and Steve who had gone to the restroom.
"This bottle is empty.” Thor said shaking the bottle in the air.
“I’ll go fetch another one.” Tony said standing up ceremoniously.
“I don’t want that bubbly shit. Anyone in for some tequila shots?” Thor asked as he also stood up and went to the bar without waiting for an answer.
“Oh…my…God!” Natasha suddenly slurred nudging Clint who was beside her.
"This is better than we expected” Clint whispered, grinning.
“What? What’s happening” Bucky asked.
He looked at Natasha who didn’t answer but he followed her gaze only to spot a tall handsome brunette chatting with Peralta and Santiago.
“What is he doing here?” Nat hissed to Clint
“Don’t know. Must be the buddy Peralta said he was meeting.“ Clint answered Nat.
"Who is he?” Bucky frowned.
“Storm” Wanda, who was nibbling a piece of lime, explained to Bucky “He’s a fireman and has the hots for Stark” she practically purred.
“Well, this is awkward.” Sam deadpanned.
“You know what? I’m gonna help Thor with the shots.” Wanda said to the group.
“Ok. I’m lost” Bucky said once Wanda was out of earshot.
“Phase 2, Barnes” Natasha’s eyes glinted “The plan was getting them drunk and leave them alone, wasn’t it? But, this is brilliant!” she clapped excitedly. “Steve’s gonna see him here, get all jealous and protective…”
“Ok, but someone needs to keep flash fire dude away from Stark until Captain Slow can make his move…” Sam warned looking as Steve was coming back from the restroom and was approaching the bar.
"Uh oh, too late” Bucky said moving his head towards Wanda who was talking to Johnny Storm and pointing at Katie’s direction before she gestured to their booth.
“Fuck.” Clint hissed.
“Should have seen that coming.” Natasha groaned.
“Can’t blame her, Witchy is only playing the cards she has left.” Clint chuckled.
“All right, Steve coming at your 9. Everybody play it cool. Let’s see how this unfolds.” Sam muttered.
It was only seconds after Steve had sat in the booth with another beer in his hands that Thor came carrying a tray with shots and a bottle of tequila, followed by Wanda and Johnny.
“Here, let me help you.” Wanda offered Thor.
“I told you I can handle this” he said placing the tray on the table “Fortunately, I am mighty.” he said casually tossing the bottle in the air and catching it expertly.
Bucky saw as Natasha gave a filthy look to Wanda who was now sitting between her and Steve.
“What? Wanda whispered.
"You know what.” Natasha muttered at her.
Steve’s eyes flickered up to the dark haired man and he did a double take. That was the Flash Fireman, the friend of Peralta’s that Katie had been talking to at the Christmas Party. He took a deep breath and felt his shoulders stiffen slightly as he looked around, spotting that Katie, Diaz and Gina were making their way over. He took a deep breath and his nostrils flared as Johnny blatantly looked Katie up and down as she made her way over.
“S’Up Fire Boy?” Diaz asked him “No kittens to rescue from a tree?”
“Off duty…” Johnny grinned “And stop pretending you’re not happy to see me Diaz.” “Yeah, that’s her happy face, just for clarity.” Gina nodded, folding her arms “Her angry face…well, no one who’s seen it has lived to tell the tale.”
There were a few chuckles from the table until Thor roared out that it was time for shots. Katie slid into the booth on the spare seat next to Johnny as Bucky and Steve both stood up to grab extra stools for Diaz and Gina. Once they were all seated Thor passed the shots around and Steve hastily slammed his down as he watched Katie leaning slightly into Johnny, the pair of them chatting. As Steve watched he held out his arm of his jacket and Katie smiled, reaching out to gently stroke it.
“You like it?” he asked looking at her “It’s a new material made by my sister, she’s an engineer.” he said sliding an arm around Katie’s shoulder “It keeps the hot stuff hot and the cool stuff cool.”
“Yeah, can’t have your brain overheating, can we?” Steve jabbed at him, rolling his eyes.
Bucky chuckled at Steve’s comment and Katie tried to hide her smile sipping from her glass.
“I’m not wearing a hat.” Johnny frowned earning a withering look from Steve and Katie choked on her Martini. At that point there was no hiding the grin spreading across her face and Bucky saw her glance at Steve, probably to share another one of those knowing, inside smiles, but her expression slipped. He looked over to see Wanda laugh at Steve’s joke and hold onto his left arm. And the Captain made no move to shrug her off. Instead, he turned into her, his arm moving only to drape round the back of the bench they were on.
Uh Oh.
“Are you ok, princess?” Bucky’s attention flicked back to Johnny who was looking at Katie. “Wanna dance?” he asked with his playful signature smile.
“Yeah, why not?” She said, shooting another glare at Steve. She stood up and flash fired dude slipped his arm round her, hand gripping at her hip as he steered her into the middle of the dancefloor
“I’m dancing too.” Natasha said standing up “And you’re all coming with me. This is a girl’s night after all…”she added dragging Wanda up out of the seat before she turned around and mouthed do something at Bucky.
Bucky looked at Clint and Sam for support, he wasn’t sure what it was that Natasha expected him to do. The situation was disastrous enough as it was.
The pretty blond waitress from the bar came to collect the tray and empty bottles scattered over the table and gave Steve an intense look.
"Want another drink or anything else, handsome? A dance maybe?”
“No thanks” Steve groaned. He stood up and simply said “Excuse me” before walking towards the bar.
“What’s wrong with him?” she asked Bucky and Sam who were looking at her sympathetically.
“Don’t take it personally. He’s in love.” Bucky shrugged.
“Oh, so is he taken?” she asked apologetically.
“Not exactly…” Sam tried to explain.
“What? Is she blind or something?” the waitress said wiping the table with a rag.
“Something like that.” Clint scoffed.
Bucky sat back and tried to come up with a way to redirect the situation. Jealous and drunk Steve was not a good combination but now it was pointless trying to fix the disaster as he saw Steve perched on a stool by the bar, another beer in hand, looking at the dance floor like a wolf.
And then, it was almost like it was happening in slow motion. Wanda, who had slunk off the dancefloor made her way over to Steve where she draped herself, shamelessly over him. And before Bucky could even move to warn Steve, as he could see what was happening a mile off, she’d slipped her arms round his neck and pulled him down to kiss her.
Bucky let out a groan and he turned to the dancefloor to see Natasha stood there, hand over her mouth and she turned to look at him. He waved his hand over his throat furiously, in an attempt to get Natasha to sort it out but it was too late. Bucky’s eyes flickered to Katie whose attention was fully on Steve and her face fell.
“You left Wanda unleashed!” Bucky practically yelled, exaggerating his words so Natasha could see what he was saying, as he pointed in the direction of Steve and Wanda at the bar.
“Abort phase two. This is a disaster.” Clint groaned. Meanwhile, Thor laughed loudly and clapped.
“Matchmakers of the year, ladies and gentlemen!” he said.
“Where you even here?” Clint asked visibly annoyed.
In all fairness to Steve, he hadn’t been expecting Wanda to make a move like that. It took a while for his drunken brain to catch up with what was going on, but when he finally did he gently caught Wanda on the hips and pushed her away.
“Wanda…” he shook his head “I’m sorry, you’re a great girl and everything but…”
He stood up and looked around, and then he felt his heart sink. Katie and the Fancy Fireman were heading for the exit, hand in hand. Bucky was also watching the two of them leave, and his attention turned to Steve and the utter look of devastation the Captain wore.
Fuck.

Allison McQueen sits alone at a table by the window at the library downtown, a criminal justice textbook in front of her. The words blur on the page before her eyes. She pauses to run her hands down her face and then picks up a pen, twirling it in her fingers. A half-written page in her notebook stares up at her.
“An eye for an eye, as the Code says.”
“Huh?”
She glances up abruptly to find a blond boy about her age looking down at her, a lopsided smirk on his face. “Your textbook.” He nods at it. “You must be studying criminal law.”
“Oh! Right.” She flushes. “I’m actually studying to be a crime scene investigator. I always found the work fascinating.”
“Hm.” A thoughtful look crosses his handsome features. “Crime scene investigation, eh? How...unusual. You do know it’s nothing like what you see on the telly, right?”
“Of course. My professors remind us time and time again that it’s never like what you see on the telly. Probably because too many people go into that field because they hope to be the next Horatio Caine or Mac Taylor.”
She is referring to her two favorite detectives on the American television programs CSI: Miami and CSI: New York.
“What about you?” the boy asks. “Who do you aspire to be?”
“Me?” she asks. “No one. Not in pop culture, anyway. I just aspire to be a crime scene investigator that people can rely on and do my job as expected.”
“Good answer.” The boy grins. “May I?”
He nods at the empty seat across from her, and she nods.
“I’m Dylan.” He extends his hand. “I work here as an intern, so I’ve noticed you coming in here a lot.”
“I’m Allison.” She shakes his outstretched hand. “I’ve seen you walking around the shelves a lot. Are you looking into librarianship?”
Dylan shrugs. “Maybe. I’ve considered it, although I prefer to be more hands-on with shelving books than talking to people. I might just stick with being a page.”
Silence follows. Allison’s pen scratches some more notes down. Dylan speaks again.
“So...you want to get out of here?” he asks.
“Erm...is that allowed?” She’s uncertain. “You have work, right?”
“Actually, I was just going to go get some food. You’re welcome to join. I could use the company. I get an hour, tops. Come with. You look like you’ve been working up a storm in here.”
She seems grateful for the relief. “Believe it or not, I have been,” she says, rubbing her tired eyes. “I feel like the whole day has escaped me. Is it evening already?”
“Yup.” Dylan is all too eager to leave. “Come on, future CSI. Let’s go find you some scenes to investigate.”
Dylan’s car is parked in one of the front spots in the library lot. He clicks the remote on his keys and opens his passenger door for Allison. She hides a blush and grins.
“Such a gentleman. Where are we headed, good sir?”
Dylan chuckles. “Well, my dear lady, there is a cafe just a few miles up that I like to frequent. Their tea and sandwich special is simply to die for. Guaranteed fresh daily, or you can slap my arse.”
Allison giggles at the comedic accent he puts on, and the two of them share a laugh and pleasant conversation the whole drive up.
“Honestly, Allison, I do appreciate you accompanying me,” Dylan says in all seriousness again. “I’ve been coming down here by myself so many times that I’ve very nearly forgotten the joy and importance of company, preferably by the female sort.”
“What, you’ve never taken your girlfriend anywhere?” Allison is surprised that such a handsome chap would not be taken.
“Nah; we broke it off,” he replies indifferently. “Didn’t work out, she and I. She broke up with me because she thought I was too work-centered. Didn’t know how to let loose. It lasted three weeks.”
Three weeks. A girlfriend, for three weeks. Allison’s heart pours out for this lonely young man.
“I’m sorry, Dylan.” Her voice is almost a whisper. “I can’t imagine being in a relationship for only three weeks. Sounds like she was missing out on something wonderful.”
“Eh, I’m used to it, at this point.” He shrugs. “Girls never really had it for me. I must be a stroke of bad luck or something, but I appreciate your kindness.”
He suddenly slows down and pulls off the side of the road, turning off the engine.
“Wait. Why are we stopped?” Allison looks puzzled. “I thought we were going to get something to eat. Are we close?”
“Not really.” Dylan sounds as if he didn’t hear her. “Dylan? What’s going on?”
“Engine trouble,” Dylan grumbles, before he turns in the seat to face her. “You know, you have gorgeous eyes.”
“Er...thanks?” Uncertainty starts to grip Allison. “So do you.”
Dylan leans closer. The smile on his face looks almost menacing.
“Dylan, what are you doing?” Allison begins to move away. He is way too close for her liking. Was he going to kiss her? “What are you scared of, baby?” he asks in a soft voice. “I’m not gonna hurt you. I thought we’d have a bit of an adventure before we went out to eat. Just you and me.”
“An adventure?” Allison’s voice is weak. She has a bad feeling about this situation.
“An adventure,” Dylan repeats. “Just you and me. You’ll love it. I promise. It’ll be a new experience for both of us.”
He unbuckles his seatbelt and moves towards her, looming. She backs away until she can’t back away any more. Her backside presses against the passenger door.
“Kiss me,” Dylan urges. “Why are you backing away from me? I just want a kiss.”
There it goes.
“I...” Allison tries to speak, but is lost for words.
Dylan grips her shoulders, hard, and presses his mouth against hers, lingering for as long as he will allow it. She raises her hands in protest, attempting to push him off, but he doesn’t budge. Neither of them notice the dark car that has pulled up behind them or heard the crunching of footsteps on the ground until there’s a harsh pounding at the driver side door.
“Hey! Open up!” A voice barks from outside.
“What the bloody hell?” Dylan jerks up from his intimate position against Allison and glares daggers.
A fist raps on the car window. Someone is outside, and whoever it is does not sound happy.
“Open up and step out of the vehicle with your hands on your head!”
Allison has heard this being said enough times to realize what’s happening. The person rapping on the window is a COP.
Oh, thank goodness! she thinks. If Dylan continued this behavior, I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to fight him off! It was as if the cop, whoever he was, showed up right when she needed him.
“Bloody hell! The fuzz???” He turns his dagger glare on Allison, still cowering against the door. “What did you do, eh? What the bloody hell did you do? Did you call the fuzz on me? Huh? DID YOU CALL THE COPS ON ME???”
“No!” Allison’s response is a squeak. She’s terrified of who this man has become. One second he was handsome and charming, and now he is a monster, unrecognizable.
Jekyll, meet Hyde.
“Sir! I will not ask you again!” The cop is still present. “Open up and step outside of the vehicle! I want your hands where I can see them!”
“F’ck you!” Dylan flips the unseen cop the bird. “Can’t you see I’m in the middle of something here?”
There’s silence, and then the cop raps on the window again, this time with something other than his knuckles.
“Oh my God. He’s got a gun!” Allison realizes that the object being tapped against the window is a pistol. “You’d better open the door, Dylan! This guy is not playing games!”
“You think I’m gonna open the door because of some damn gun?” Snapping. “Guns don’t scare me, baby. And you don’t have to be scared of me. I’ll protect you from all the big bad boys out there. This is our time to be alone together.”
Flipping the bird at the cop outside again, he starts to lean in over Allison a second time...before his door is flung open and he is dragged out roughly by his shirt.
“Hey, whoa!” he yells. “What the hell are y—?” He doesn’t get to finish before he is thrown to the ground and forces on to his stomach.
Allison can only hear the cop’s voice as she slowly comes out of her hunched-over position. He is clearly angry, all his anger directed at Dylan.
“When I give you an order, you bloody well follow it!” he is shouting. “If you put your hands on that lady again, I will have your arse under lock and key faster than lightning!” Scuffling. Dylan sounds like he’s moaning. “Do not catch me seeing you doing what you were doing ever again, do you hear me? Do you hear me??” Inaudible. “Now get out of here and don’t come back!”
“What about my car?” Challenging.
“Your car will be towed back to your residence when I allow it.” Counterattack. “I will not see you put your hands on a woman again, do you understand? Now go!”
More moaning. Unsteady footsteps. Silence. Then a shadow passes over the open driver’s door. Allison draws her knees up to her chest, heart hammering, her body frozen in fear.
“Are you alright, miss?” An unfamiliar face appears inside the doorway. Young. Strikingly dashing.
Allison only stares, refusing to move.
“It’s all right.” A soft, gentle British accent. “I won’t hurt you. I’m here to help.” He reaches into his shirt and flashes a badge hanging around his neck. “I’m an investigator. I was in the area when I saw your car. Are you hurt?” He holds out his hand to her and gives her a very charming smile, and she nearly melts under it. “It’s all right. Your boyfriend won’t harm you again.”
Allison slowly crawls forward and takes his hand, allowing him to help her out of the car. “Dylan’s not my boyfriend,” she says in a low voice. “He was starting his break at work and invited me to dinner. We were on our way to a cafe he mentioned before he pulled over and got all weird with me.” She looks up at him and seems to notice him for the first time.
Damn, she mutters in her mind. You are CUTE!
“You’re a cop?” she asks coolly, not wanting her feelings to get in the way. “You have a badge...and a pistol.” She notices that the pistol is now holstered at his right hip. “I’m a private investigator, actually,” he answers. “I get called in on special cases to help clients find what they’re looking for. My agency is just a few miles down the road from here. I was in the area on a case when I saw your car pulled over, and judging by what I could make out in the rear window, there was definitely a struggle going on. Are you hurt?”
He is genuinely concerned. His handsome face distorts into a frown as he looks her over, checking for injuries.
“I’m fine. I’m just shaken,” she answers. “I wasn’t expecting Dylan to snap like that. It was like a wire had gone bonkers inside of him or something. I’m really thankful you showed up when you did; I don’t think I would’ve been able to fight him off. I froze up.” She looks around, not knowing any of her surroundings. “I’m sorry. I know you probably have a case to get back to, investigator...er, what was your name?”
“I believe I didn’t give it yet. That’s on me. It’s Sinclaire. Detective Ernest Sinclaire, Private Investigator. I work at the Ledford Park Detective Agency as the only lone private eye. And the case can wait. A lovely lady such as yourself who has just been pushed to trauma is way more important to me at the moment, miss...?”
“McQueen. Allison. McQueen. It’s nice to officially meet the investigator who became my knight in shining police armor. Can you tell me, Detective Sinclaire, where I am? I really don’t know this part of town and I would like to go home. I’ve been studying at the library literally all day.”
“Studying?” Sinclaire looks intrigued. “May I ask what you are studying, Miss McQueen?”
“Criminal justice,” Allison replies. “I, er...” She suddenly looks embarrassed about admitting her field of study to an actual law enforcement officer. “I want to be a crime scene investigator.”
“A CSI?” The detective’s eyes sparkle. “Well, I can definitely teach you a thing or two about that. As a matter of fact, I’ve been on the lookout for an assistant to work with me at my agency, and so far none of them have met the qualifications. I can give you my information if it interests you, although I know we just met. Where do you live? I’ll drive you home and we can talk some more.”
An assistant. Detective Ernest Sinclaire, whom Allison knew next to nothing about, just said he was looking for an assistant. At Ledford Park Detective Agency, whatever and wherever that was. Still, though...
“Miss McQueen?” Allison jumps out of her thoughts to find Sinclaire’s piercing blue eyes trained on her. “I asked you where you lived. I want to drive you home. You shouldn’t be out here alone. Did I lose you there?”
“Sorry,” she says. “I was just thinking about your job offer. I actually live at Edgewater Estates. I’m not sure if you...”
“I know where that is,” Sinclaire assures her. “Shall we, then? As for the job, you don’t have to decide just yet. We’ve only just met. I’ll give you my business card and we can go from there. I’ve been trying to find an assistant for a long time now.”

(❁˘▽˘) thank you for reading xoxo
**************************
New Orleans
"Special Agent Dean Stavros" the man introduced himself to Elena and Nick
"The body?" Elena said.
"Right. Follow me. Bossy much?" Dean looked at Nick.
"Sugar deficiency. I hope you know some good beignet joint?" Nick replied.
Elena was going through her tablet already crossreferencing the files she had on local myths and legends. You drive" she said to Nick as she got in the SUV on the passenger side.
Strangely Nick didn't mind the way she would just be so forward with him in a way like they had been working together forever and it was the way they rolled.
"Have you crossed all the ts?" Nick asked as she put the tablet down looking out of the window.
"All of them were killed in sacred woods" Elena replied still gazing out of the window.
"Ritual killing?"
"I don't know yet. Anyway, remember the stuff you got about that Aztec Sun & Moon ritual Vicky Donovan wrote in her diary?!"
"The Supermoon eclipse?"
"Yeah-" Elena muttered pensively.
"Where are you going with this? Nick inquired.
"I've just read about a local legend of the Loogaroo vampire. The name is a blending Loup Garou and the Obayifo".
"I know. Obayifo- vampiric witch." Nick said.
"Oh, you really have been doing your homework" Elena was impressed.
"The month you were recuperating I used to catch up on all your docu on vampires"
"Right" she shot a I'm really impressed, "Loogaroo as a term conceals a cipher of the words Ura Ghul, or devourer of hearts, which echos the thing that Davina Claire's heart being cut out could have something to do with it"
"But what has sun and the moon myth got to do with it all then?"
"Oh, it's about- well, maybe raising the Loogaroo, sun and the moon eclipse is necessary to bring forth this creature -something to do with mixing the dark and the light magic. It's about traditions of Voudon, which are about the light and dark. A fusion of African and European magical practices This is all a stretch, but I am trying to prove that all those women drained of blood have a much darker connection. Oh, the Loogaroo has a werewolf aspect as well. There is another legend that says, In the other legend the Loogaroo is a sorcerer who makes a pact with the "devil" and thence is able to leave there body to feed as a vampire. In Voudon the Loogaroo is linked to the Loa Legba in his Kalfu aspect and in Santeria to Eshu both of whom are symbolized by the image of the devil. Some claim the Loogaroo is a name for a type of werewolf due to the wolfish aspect of the Zulo of this type of Strega but Strigoi have often taken such shapes as it is the "witch" shape of its locality."
"Now you gave us lots of food for thought" Nick said as he stopped the car as they had arrived at the morgue.
"Don't mention food. I am seriously hungry."
"You had that double burger before we left the hotel this morning" Nick remarked.
"I should have had two" Elena twitched with her lips, regretting not ordering another one to take.
Agent Stavros now came up to them thinking that he had never met a quirky type like Elena and Nick.
"Here we go" he said and kind of waved the hand to follow him.
Inside, Elena took over with examining the body of Davina Claire. Outside the room Dean answered some additional questions about the witch.
"This is New Orleans. Nearly one in five crimes have a shadow of witchcraft, voodoo attached to it" Dean said
"Yes, but she worked in a magic shop," Nick said,"which I suppose was just a shop selling trinkets and oinments and stupid potions"
"You think we don't take this stuff seriously? The girl's heart was torn out. Dark magic is powerful stuff- I know it" Dean said.
"You do?"
"Unfortunatelly. Anyway, our CSI team is really good. Why is she examining the body herself" Dean replied.
"Because she sees stuff noone does" Nick said.
"I heard so much about her, but I have never imagined her being so - " Dean paused as words escaped him.
"Different?" Nick tilted his head in interest.
"Yeah, different! Creepy Elena"
Dean’s phone rang and he excused himself for a moment.
Elena got out and said that they could go. She had all the info she needed.
"I have to go. I will see you tomorrow. And the place to smash yourself with sweet stuff Royale St. Mention my name and you will get the best beignets"-
"Right. See you tomorrow. Thanks." Elena said.
Dean hurried away and the two agents did the same.
On the way to the cafe Kol had suggested, Elena shared her findings with him.
"So, this is another vampire?" Nick asked.
"No, this was not a vampre bite. Werewolf."
"So, the Loogaroo?" Nick concluded.
"No. I don't know. It can't be. The other victims didn't have their hearts torn out"- Elena said looking out of the window.
"Are you all right?" Nick said worryingly.
"Yes, why?"
"This is the second time you have that absent-minded look swaying into whatever you see out there." Nick explained.
"I am fine. Just - loads of thoughts. Way too many and that is why I need sugar."
"There- Royale St" Nick said and soon parked up near the cafe.
"You know NOLA pretty well, ha?" Elena said as they got out of the car.
"Of course, you know I lived here as a teenager, till we moved to D.C. And Camille is from NOLA!”
"True. Slipped my mind about her." Elena said.
They entered the cafe and it was all about the beignets, the sweet potatoe pie. Even Nick had some and they talked about New Orleans, as they both were very fond of the place as it turned out.
"It was like an escape for my aunt Jenna and me. New York is amazing, but New Orleans was like entering another time and space" Elena said.
And there was this flicker in her eyes that opened a window into her soul.
"I see where you get your toughness from. Jenna doesn't take any hostages.” Nick said.
"She is great" Elena said and the tine of voice indicated that she didn't want to go further into discussing family.
Flashback
"You promise me that you will have Elena's back!" Jenna said to Nick that first night in the hospital as she found him standing on his own outside the hospital building.
"You have my world" Nick said.
"I want it in blood. Ok. Sorry. I get carried away. She is the only family I got left. And- she will be eatching yours, even more so, as she lost her partner"
"Now you are slipping away" Elena caught Nick lost in his thoughts.
"It's the weather here"
"What hotel have we got?" Elena asked.
"The Old 77"
"View on the Mississipi. Great. Luke really knows what to pick"
"I thought you didn't care about these things" Nick teased, curling a cute smile at her.
"I can sleep anywhere, but in a place like this a moment of something amazing, like the Mississipi." Elena said taking a bite of her sweet potatoe pie.
They stayed a little while longer and then went to the hotel.
New Orleans was a place that never sleeps, same as one other great city. And the night life was just about to start, and unlike Elena, Elijah would go out for drinks with his friends, although it was only Camille, Gia and Vincent.
And so he knocked at her door.
Elena opened it with a question mark in her eyes-"Something happened?"
"No. I was going out for a drink- wanna come?"
"Drink? Ahm, I was going to - go talk to Davina's cousin."
"Don't we have that scheduled for tomorrow after we scour the Magic Shop!?"
"We do." Elena stood there as if she was caught red-handed. Then she turned around and took her phone and hotel card. "One drink"
Nick then stopped for a second. By the expression of his face, she could tell that he was not happy. "You've just lied to my face. You were going to the Bayou on your own, weren't you? Weren't you??"
Elena stood in the hallway as condemned. It was true. And whatever she now said would not matter.
"I don't know what the fucking deal is with you but I am not a side thing- an assistant doing research-"
"No, you're not. But I can't risk you going with me"
"What are you talking about? You can't risk what exactly?"
"I can't risk you getting killed" Elena then said.
"Who got shot a while ago?!! It was you if I remember correctly." Nick looked at her puzzled.
"I can't let the same thing happen to you like it happened to Jackson."
"Why do you think anything will happen to me?" Nick looked at her wide-eyed.
"When I was shot that night- if you were with me they would have shot you too."
"Who is they, Elena?” Nick wanted answers.
She was in a check-mate position. She turned around and went to her room. Nick followed her in.
"It's about time you start speaking."
Elena sighed a little and then looked at him seriously, "The vampire that killed Lexi Branson."
"Yes-"
"I killed it,” Elena said,"I went to the woods and - I killed it."
"What? Are you saying - you killed IT?!"
Elena was silent for a second and exclaimed agitated "I killed IT!"
Nic's head was spinning and he didn't know whether he had just entered a bad dream.
"I killed IT. That is what I do" Elena said again.
Elijah turned around and left the room.
"Amaro!" Elena shouted following him out.
Elena stood still as she got out of the room looking right and then left, "Amaro!” She now ran down the hall, all in frenzy, but there was not a shadow of her partner to be seen.
"No, this can't be happening. Not again" she took her phone and pressed the speedial for Nick’s number. There was no answer. It went straight to voice mail. She left no message, but went into the crowd. Into the night.
Flashback
Years back
Elena and Dale Cooper got out of the car as they got near the woods, a few miles out of Twin Peaks.
"Smell the air"- Cooper said to the young Agent.
Elena did. The pine trees had a very potent smell to them. She knew this was yet another most unusual exercise in the supernatural.
"It is a beautiful day, isn't it?!" he said rethorically.
Elena could not disagree. The sun was shinning, the birds were singing a greeting to the spring. All was very enchanting, except for one thing, a girl wrapped up in plastic bag found in the woods two days previously.
Another car pulled up. Cooper greeted the Sheriff introducing him to Elena.
"This is a very good man, one of the best," Cooper said shaking the Sheriff's hand,"Harry, this is Agent Gilbert, Bureau's bright new star"
Elena shook the Sheriff's hand as well.
"Here we are again. Everything was peaceful for fifteen years" the Sheriff said.
"But, the case compared to Laura Palmer shows something completely different."
"There is so much more in these woods than evil ghosts,” Cooper said,"we will examine the body after we finish here. I hope the diner still serves good coffee?!"
"It does," the Sheriff confirmed,"you might like the new pie they are serving"
Cooper smiled a little and then they all went into the woods.
Elena came up to the house in the French Quarter she had been at a while ago.
The woman opened it and looked at Elena uttering, "Angel Heart?!"
Elena had no time for pleaseantries and walked right passed the woman. She stormed in the study, where a man in his fifties put a book on a shelf with his back still turned saying, "What can I do for you?"
"What have you done with my partner?" Elena shot sternly trying to steady herself.
The hybrid turned around facing her now,"Why would you assume that I have anything to do with your new partner?"
"Let's not continue with the bullshit. You think that I didn't see your shadows lurking about," Elena continued,"you would do anything to stop the investigation. So, just spill!"
"I have nothing to do with Davina Claire's demise. I honour my agreement with the Bureau. You know this city, shinning from the outside, rotten from the inside" Lucien said putting a little smirk on.
Elena laughed. And she stood there not budging. And the hybrid, part werewolf, part warlock, just glared at her. There was nothing he could do to her and vice versa. But Elena knew he would have information, but she also knew he would be intertwined in a huge web of deals to insure his survival in this city of magic.
"You know that always get to the truth, and I don't keep to the agreement, because I know what you are like' Elena said in a tone that sounded like an ominous promise.
"I know, Angel Heart" Lucien said with a grim face.
"Later" Elena stormed out of the room. She got what she came for. His glare stated that Nick was indeed taken.
"Damn, where are you, Amaro?" she muttered, her mind racing zillion times over trying to figure who would take her partner.
Flashback Twin Peaks , years ago
In the woods
"The evil resides in many forms," Cooper said to Elena,"you know it so very well. I don't have to tell you that. But I will still share with you my wisdom."
Elena couldn't wait to hear what he would come out with.
Cooper took a sip of the coffee from the thermos indulging in it for a second and then said, "Take it by the horns! And face it straight on!"
This was one of so many quirky things she kept in her head as golden rule.

And where was Nick?
Deep in the Bayou, in a cabin, away from the world, with a bite wound on his neck half conscious, not understanding what was going on.
He could hear voices as if they were coming from the distance, but two men were standing right next to him.
"Let's kill him now," one man said,"I don't care about what she said."
"Not until the ritual. No one will find him here" the other man said.
Nick tried to call out, but his head went fuzzy and now he closed his eyes, breathing heavy.
