So - I have some minor thoughts...
Yes, Aziraphale was acting selflessly to an extent, but they also laid down the line that they thought Crowley being a demon is a defect of Crowley - why *wouldn't* Crowley want to cast off hell and work in heaven??
Crowley has also been clear that they chose inevitably to 'leave heaven' because they asked QUESTIONS OF GOD, which was enough to get them kicked out. Just QUESTIONS. Crowley didn't want to leave in the first place, but everything they do showcases that Crowley wants to change things, understand things - and that means questioning why.
In a magical world where Crowley went with Aziraphale, Crowley would have probably asked questions again and gotten kicked out.
The reason why I think this whole thing is heartbreaking is Aziraphale lays in on the table that being a demon is lesser, that INCLUDES CROWLEY, and Aziraphale thinks that Crowley would love to go back, when Crowley doesn't want to. Crowley doesn't think of themselves as lesser - and it is nearly impossible to be with a partner who thinks that an essential part of your character is a flaw which must be fixed... when asking questions should never be a crime.
Aziraphale didn't choose heaven, he chose humanity. he chose making a difference. he chose trying to fix a fucked up system that does harm by its mere existence. he chose taking the ticking clock hanging over their heads and smashing it to pieces.
and he didn't choose that over Crowley, he chose it over his own happiness, over being near the one person who truly knows him and loves him.
and he did it alone even though that was the last thing he wanted.

I saw this post by @ivankaramazov07
and as a result wrote the following poem from the POV of an Aziraphale who repeatedly tries to confess his feelings but causes pain instead.
Tumblr media
I must explain what you are to me so I fret and I stall and I try, but the words stick in my throat  and I cough out slights.
Every attempt like eating hot coals. Crying “holy holy holy” as passion burns another scar in my mouth and  beats another bruise on your heart.
Fermented vows meant to intoxicate instead rot into vile poisons. Lips dripping venom claret turning gentle kisses to festering bites.
But your supernal love is a honey tonic which I drink down in greedy gulps  that soothe and slake and heal. And I am given another chance.
But my scalpel tongue lost its precision. It has learned to be jagged and cruel and your eyes fluster and enfeeble me and I clumsily cut us both once more.
You absolve my sins again and again, anointing me with medicinal affection as I tear my garment in worry and adorn myself in strictest penitence.
But each stroke becomes a strike until  we both collapse exhausted and exsanguinated by my inadequacy. But as long as you wait I will strive.
And if I never do succeed, cutting us both to ribbons in the endeavor, I pray only that my eyes close first; never to see our world without you.
Buried in a shroud of your mercy.
Read more of my work here. This poem is also available on AO3.

I will make a longer post about this at some point but: if your theories about why Aziraphale has done bad and abusive things and has been having fun in la la land while ignoring all the horrors around him don’t include the fact that Crowley never told him how he’d been treated in Heaven, Crowley never told him he was at risk of being erased from the Book of Life, Crowley never told him what had he saw in Heaven’s Confidential Files, etc.
I simply won’t take you seriously.

I hate it when people discount Aziraphale without understanding him as a character. Partly, it's more because people like to see bad guys doing good things. And if a demon saves children from death, it means more to them than if an angel did it, even if he lied to heaven and put himself in danger. Essentially: “he’s an angel, it’s in his nature to be kind, so what’s surprising?”
I'm not against Crowley. I like both characters, but I don't like how there are too many defenders of Crowley, while Aziraphale is constantly made into a villain. After the second season, they were generally credited with clear, disgusting images - a poor puppy suffering from unrequited love and a stupid angel who broke his heart. This superficiality is so annoying. As if only Crowley is feeling bad and only he is suffering, which means only he should be pitied.
My friend and I are currently watching a show where the bad guy who starts out doing terrible things becomes a sweetheart in the middle of the season 2. And I watch how she sheds tears from every good deed he does, as if she had completely forgotten what he did a couple of episodes ago. And I have to endure this with a mixture of misunderstanding and rejection: “Are you really serious?” There was literally a scene where a character consciously kills the main character's brother on purpose and then a couple minutes later says he's sorry. “See? He repents,” says a friend. As if that would change the fact that he killed a person (don't worry, the brother survived thanks to a lucky accident (killer doesn’t know it) but imagine if he actually killed him and then came to apologize). One good deed by a bad person always overshadows all other bad deeds, making him appear good.
Also, I think it's all about Tennant's popularity and his image as a demon. I have nothing against both, but often, if a bad character is played by a handsome sexy actor, the idol of millions and the owner of hearts, then he is loved more according to the standard. Just like in the series that my friend and I are watching now.
It’s annoying too how many people sometimes turn a blind eye to how “unkind” Crowley can be. Like, “you can forgive him everything because he once did a good deed.” I'm not saying Crowley is bad. No need to attack me with slippers. I'm talking about the tearful art that makes Crowley look broken and Aziraphale cold and cruel. I'm talking about hurt fanfiction, in which Crowley suffers more than me in the deepest depression (calm down already, seriously, I have enough suffering, give me a rainbow, fluff, romance and love). All these jokes about Aziraphale having to do an apology dance in the third season (despite this, I’m also looking forward to such a scene). Analysis on TikTok, where the angel is often called stupid and naive (the coffee theory just kills me, I fucking hate it).
Yes, I love memes. That's funny. Keep making jokes about the ineffable bureaucracy speed running their relationship in a year, while these idiots have gotten nowhere in 6,000 years. And about Nina and Maggie, the heads of the “Geordie Shore” program. About Metatwat, who got into the hands the Book of Life and he decided to shit us a disgusting fanfic. Carry on, I like it. But as long as these are jokes and not a hostile imposition.
There have already been so many quarrels about this. And all because people like one character more than another. And here we again return to the fact that we ourselves constantly separate them. We devalue one thing or another, and then hope for a happy ending.
This established clichéd system in the fandom is simply killing me. Therefore, I am grateful to every person who digs deeper than the sand sprinkled on top.

No communication. silly behavior. major character death (kinda). betrayal. intimate knowledge of another persons habits. angst. hurt no comfort. married life. they adopt a child and then promptly abandon him. catholic guilt. religious trauma. dancing. plenty of dates. confessions. confessions gone wrong. ducks. suicidal ideation. domestic life. i fucking CANT with them.

Y’all think Satan was watching during the Job bet and thought Crowley pretending to be an obstetrician so funny he remembered it 4500 years later? Like, the lords of hell were like, “who should we have deliver the Adversary?” And Satan was like, “I know just the demon for the job.”
#I think Crowley even has a bit of a reputation before he defects because he really must#serpent of eden#tasked to destroy everything Job owns#Job as in GODS FAVORITE#They either really love him or really hate him down there#I’m not inclined to automatically believe they love him just bc he’s said but his story is looking pretty good#if there was ever a major player in the game it’s this snake and he’s not even actually playing#he just gets dragged into these things or walks into opportunities honestly#“get up there and cause some trouble”#Crowley proceeds to commit the most iconic and remembered act in the biblical canon by introducing humans to knowledge#they don’t call it the original sin for nothing#literally tempts Adam and Eve into the first sin#hell should be kneeling before him honestly#or maybe throwing tomatoes bc he inadvertently caused all their paperwork#Satan is either impressed or thinks this little freak is the funniest thing ever#probably knows he’s in love with an Angel and doesn’t even care as long as it’s entertaining#I know I’m giving Satan too much credit but it’s funny#he didn’t count on Crowley trying to REPLACE him as a parent along with his angel partner#and then raise the WRONG CHILD#or maybe he did honestly#if you want everything to go to plan give it to your most competent guy#or the guy who will fuck it up so bad it cancels out and turns out how you wanted#Satan and God probably had on ongoing bet about how long it would take these two to notice that’s the wrong kid

i think its funny that in good omens some 11 year old swearing technically did more in stopping Armageddon successfully than the demon and angel main characters who spent the entire series trying to stop the end of the world. like girl, they didn't even get trialed for saving the earth, they got put on trial for being gay with each other really
