I've been living with a neighbourhood ghoul for a few months now. The food he prepares is very tasty, especially the meat dishes, which are better than in a casual restaurant. My life is full of happiness, and I jog home every day because I can't wait for his ‘welcome home’ and home-cooked meals. It is a lie that not so long ago I was lonely, bored and even frustrated by the sounds of my next door' lives. Now I don't have time to think about such trivial things and can concentrate only on the happiness in front of me. Come to think of it, I don't think I've even felt any sign of my next doors' recently, let alone the sounds of their lives. Ifugao Trip

 Magandang araw po!

　6/11にIfugaoの伝統舞踊を見に行ったことについては書きましたが、現地で2泊して周辺の観光もしてきたので、それについて書こうと思います^^

　伝統舞踊のパフォーマンスを見るために訪れたGotad Ad Festivalは、それらの出し物がある体育館の周辺に、飲食の屋台や、Ifugao州の各地域による屋外展示のコーナーもありました。

↑Asipulo Municipality（市）の展示の様子。中では、地元でとれた野菜や、伝統舞踊でも用いられていたRice Wineが販売されていました。

　現地のガイドさんのお友達の家に泊まらせてもらえることになり、隣町のKianganまでトライシケルで１時間くらいかけて向かいました。

　ガイドさんがマーケットで鶏をまるまる一羽買ってきて、家の外でさばいて煮込んだものをごちそうしてくれました。生きた鶏を食べられる状態にする過程を初めて目の当たりにし、目を背けたいような衝撃的な場面もありました。Ifugaoの先祖代々の伝統で、お祝い事などの際にはまるまる一羽の鶏をみんなで食べることがあり、生き物へのリスペクトをもってさばくとのことで、他者の命をいただくということについて考えさせられるいい経験になりました。肉とそのだしが染みたスー���をお米と一緒にいただき、とてもおいしかったです！次の日の朝まで大切に頂きました。

↑次の日の朝。稲作が盛んなIfugaoらしく、家の周りには田んぼが広がっていました！周辺を散策して気持ちのいい朝でした🌤

↑この日はKianganを案内してもらいました。これはAmbuwayaという湖。

　次はKiangan Shrineに行きました。Kianganは、第二次世界大戦で第１４方面軍司令官だった山下奉文大将が投降した町であり、Kiangan Shrineの敷地内には、山下大将に関する博物館と、Ifugaoの先住民族の文化について知ることができる博物館があり、写真は撮れませんでしたが、どちらも見学しました。

　イフガオ博物館には、主にイフガオの地域ごとに異なる織物についての展示が多くありました。地域ごとに模様も違えば織り方も異なっており、織物に使う糸を綿花から作るところを少しだけ体験しましたが難しかったです^^;;

　この後夕方５時のバンに乗ってバギオに帰る予定だったのですが、トライシケルやバスを乗り継いで、バギオへのバンのターミナルがあるバナウェについたのは５時半、バンは既に出発してしまっており、頼みの綱だった高速バスもなぜかスケジュールを変更しており今日はもうないとのこと、、、。

　しかしガイドさんの別のお友達が家に泊めてくれるとのことですぐに向かうことになったのですが、お家はAsipuloというイフガオの中でもバナウェからはかなり離れた地域にあり、今来た道をまたKianganまで戻ってからトライシケルに乗っていくとのこと、、（笑）

　Kianganまでとんぼ返りし、そこからまたトライシケルで１時間くらいかけてAsipuloに辿り着き、お家に１泊させていただきました。お友達とそのご両親がいらっしゃったのですが、皆本当にやさしく、次の日の朝も、またおいでね！といって送り出してくれました。

　かなりの波乱万丈旅でしたが、思わぬハプニングと出会いにより、IfugaoのMunicipalityを４つも訪れることができ、終わってみればとてもいい経験でした（笑）

Ifugao Trip

 Hello!

 I mentioned in the last article that I’ve been to Ifugao to see the traditional dance on June 11th. I stayed there 2 days and went around there so I’m going to talk about that!

 Gotad Ad Festival has not only dance performances but also street food or exhibitions outside.

 Each exhibition expresses their own character of their municipalities. I entered that of Asipulo. They were selling some vegetables and rice wine from there.

 One of my guide's friends invited us to stay at her home and we went to her home in Kiangan municipality. It took about 1 hour to go there from Lagawe by tricycle.

 My guide bought a live chicken from the market and cooked it for us. I was surprised because it was my first time to see cooking a live chicken.I heard that in ancient times, they also cooked chicken at a feast in Ifugao. They cook chicken with a lot of respect to their lives. Although at first I was surprised, it was a good experience for me to think about taking the other’s life for our meal. We had chicken that night and the next morning, it was so delicious!

 Next morning, I walked around there and saw rice fields. I felt very good to breathe in the fresh air in Kiangan!

 My guide’s friends took me to some places in Kiangan. I saw Ambuwayan Lake.

 After that we went to Kiangan shrine. Kiangan is a place that General Yamashita had given in to in WW2. There is a museum that explains and exhibits pictures about what he did there. There is also an Ifugao museum that has textiles of each municipality in Ifugao. I had experienced how to make stitches from cotton. 

 I was planning to go back to Baguio by ban leaving Banaue at 5PM. However we got to Banaue at 5:30 and every way that I can go back has left. Then the other friend of my guide invited us to stay at her home. But her home is located in Asipulo municipality, so we went there by bus and tricycle and it took about 2 hours!

 We arrived and my guide’s friend and her parents welcomed us. They are so kind to tell me “Balik ka!”(Come back again). I saw a beautiful sunrise in the early morning, before I left.

 I had some accidents but there was a good meeting with my new friends in Ifugao. In addition, I could visit 4 municipalities in only 2 days!! I hope  I can visit rice terraces next time:)

Sumerian Mythology - The earliest deities of ancient Mesopotamia (67)

The Lament for Sumer and Ur – Poem 4: Mourning Nanna and the restoration of Ur

Enlil then answered his son Nanna (Suen, Sin): "The judgment uttered by the assembly cannot be reversed. The word of An and Enlil knows no overturning. Ur was indeed given kingship but it was not given an eternal reign. From time immemorial, since the Land was founded, until people multiplied, who has ever seen a reign of kingship that would take precedence for ever? The reign of its kingship had been long indeed but had to exhaust itself. O my Nanna, do not exert yourself in vain, abandon your city."

Nanna who loves his city left his city. Nanna took an unfamiliar path away from his beloved Ur. In order to go as an exile from her city to foreign territory, Ningal quickly clothed herself and left the city.

Laments sounded all along its city wall. Daily there was slaughter before it. Large axes were sharpened in front of Ur. The spears, the arms of battle, were prepared. The large bows, throw-sticks and shields gathered together to strike. The barbed arrows covered its outer side like a raining cloud. The people of Ur, who had once stood up to the enemy, but had no strength to take up arms, and who had not died of starvation or from weapons, were forced to follow suit.

…The statues that were in the shrine were cut down. The cook, the dream interpreter, and the seal keeper did not perform the ceremonies properly. They stood by submissively and were carried off by the foreigners. The priests of the holy uzga shrine and the sacred lustrations, the linen-clad priests, forsook the divine plans and sacred divine powers, they went off to a foreign city.

In his grief Nanna went down on his knee in front of Enlil, the father who begot him: "O father who begot me, how long will the enemy eye be cast upon my account? O Father Enlil who begot me,  the fate that you have decreed cannot be explained, as for my hairstyle of lordship and the diadem with which I was crowned." …… he put on a garment of mourning.

Enlil then provided a favourable response to his son Suen Nanna: "My son, the city built for you in joy and prosperity was given to you as your reign. Destroying the city, overthrowing its great wall and battlements: all this too is part of that reign. …… the black, black days of the reign that has been your lot. As for dwelling in your home, …… indeed Ur shall be rebuilt in splendour, the people shall bow down to you. There is to be bounty at its base, there is to be grain. There is to be splendour at its top, the sun shall rejoice there. Let an abundance of grain embrace its table. May Ur, the city whose fate was pronounced by An, be restored for you." Having pronounced his blessing, Enlil raised his head toward the heavens: "May the land, south and highland, be organised for Nanna. May the roads of the mountains be set in order for Suen. Like a cloud hugging the earth, they shall submit to him. By order of An and Enlil it shall be conferred."

Thus the youth Suen Nanna could enter again into the E-kiš-nu-ĝal.  In Ur Ningal  could enter again into her E-kiš-nu-ĝal.

シュメール神話～古代メソポタミア最古の神々(67)

シュメールとウルの滅亡哀歌〜第4歌：服喪するナンナ神とウルの復権

エンリル神は息子のナンナ神（スエン、シン）に答えた：「アンとエンリルの言葉は、覆すことができない。ウルは確かに王権を与えられたが、永遠の支配権を与えられたわけではない。太古の昔、国ができてから、人々が増えるまでの間、永遠に優先される王権の統治を見た人はいるだろうか？その王権の統治は実に長かったが、それを使い果たさなければならなかった。ナンナよ、無駄な努力をせず、その都市を捨てよ」

自分の都市を愛するナンナ神は、その都市を離れた。ナンナは愛するウルから離れて、慣れない道を歩んだ。ニンガル女神は、自分の都市から異国の地へ亡命者として行くために、すぐに服を着てその都市を出た。

ウルの市壁周辺では嘆き声が響いた。毎日のように殺戮が行われ、大きな斧が振り回され、戦いの武器である槍（やり）が準備された。大弓、投石器、盾が集まって攻撃をして、雲霞（うんか）のごとく弓矢が張り巡らされた。かつては敵に立ち向かったウルの人々も、武器をとる力もなく、餓えや武器によって死ななかった人々も後追いをするしかなかった。

...神殿にあった像は破壊され、料理人、夢占い師、玉璽保管役は、儀式を行えなかった。彼らは従順に傍観し、異邦人に連れ去られた。神聖なウズガ神殿の神官と神聖な除霊師、リネンを着た神官は、神の計画と神聖な神の力を見捨てて、異国の都市に行ってしまった。

悲しみに暮れたナンナ神は、自分を生んだ父エンリル神の前でひざまづいた：「私を生んだ父よ、いつまで私のせいで敵の目が向けられるのか。私を生んだ父エンリルよ、あなたが定めた運命は、私の貴族の髪型や冠をかぶった髪飾りを見ても、説明がつきません」...... 彼は喪服を着た。

次にエンリル神は、息子のスエン・ナンナ神に好意的な回答をした。「我が息子よ、そなたの喜びと繁栄のうちに建設された都市は、そなたの統治のために与えられたものだ���都市を破壊し、その長大な壁や城壁を破壊することも、すべてはその統治の一部である。...... 統治の黒い、黒い日々があなたに与えられた。そなたが自分の家に戻ることについては、...... 確かにウルは華麗に再建され、人々はそなたにひれ伏すだろう。その土台には恵みがあり、穀物があるはずだ。その頂には輝きがあり、太陽はそこで祝賀するだろう。豊かな穀物でその食卓を包み込ませよう。アン神に運命を宣告された都市、そなたのウルが回復するように」

祝福の言葉を述べた後、エンリルは天に向かって頭を上げた。「南と高地の国がスエン・ナンナ神のために統制されますように。スエン・ナンナ神のために、山道が整えられます��うに。雲が大地を包み込むように、人々は彼に服従するだろう。アン神とエンリル神の定めにより、それは授与されるであろう」

こうして青年スエン・ナンナ神はエキシュヌガルに戻ることができた。  ウルではニンガル女神も再びエキシュヌガルに入ることができた。

Valencia trip part3 eat paella

Of course people say “eat paella “ if you go Spain. So do I! In Japan we hardly find good paella and if we do it’s looking pretty much truistic version of paella.

Paella was born by farmer’s and farm laborers food. So what I could imagine is not like pretty and colorful, lots of ingredients meal. In Bangladesh and Japan, we are both of the countries famous for rice making. That’s why I can imagine what people eat there. Good example is in Bangladesh we have ‘biriyani’ it’s ‘Indian paella’ I would say it. Taste are more clearly spicy and meaty, rice are fluffy perfectly cooked. Which is in Spanish rice called ‘arroz’ that’s derived from Arabic. Also the meaning is ‘leftover’ So I think biriyani and paella is a similar isn’t wrong.

It is very hard to understand deeply how Spanish region are culturally different from non Spanish who just came to this country like ‘me’. But step by step learning Spanish culture I will.

So actually paella is Valenciana local cuisine. A little bit southern of Valencia there’s a ‘Albufera lake‘ and ‘El Palmar village’. In the history paella was developed around here. They are making rice and catching fishies. There are freshwater fish there

日本語でもちょろっと書こうと思います。

もともと表現力はあるって言われますが説明上手とは言われないので良くわからないと思いますが、あくまでも記録として。

バレンシアと日本語で検索すると一番上にオレンジが出てきます。

それぐらい日本でバレンシアと言えばオレンジなんだなぁと思いました。

しかし世界的に同じように有名で、バレンシアと言えばパエリアです。

私は今回パエリア発祥の地と言われているアルブフェラ湖とエル・パルマール村に行きました。(私のブログは旅ブログではなくて食や文化の紹介です。行き方などは省略してあります。)

アルブフェラ湖は自然公園内にある大きな湖でイベリア半島で最大の自然湖です。近年は魚の養殖場も作られリズと言うボラ科の淡水魚が漁れます。そのすぐ隣にあるのはエル・パルマール村で2017年度のgoogle調べでは人口は700人ほどです。しかし、ここはパエリアのレストランが30軒近く並び、週末にはスペインや世界中から人が押し寄せ大混雑する場所です。特に日曜日に家族や大切な友人たちとパエリアを囲んで昼食をとる習慣のあるバレンシアでは日曜日のお昼のレストランは特に混み合います。

ここでは伝統的な調理法でバレンシアオレンジの薪を燃料にしてパエリアを作るレストランがあり、これも伝統に沿った素晴らしい文化だと思いました。さらに調理のポイントはお米は洗わずにそのまま投入。理由は洗わない事で栄養素を失うのを守るためらしいです。日本の米炊きでもお寿司屋さんなどは米の洗い過ぎを防ぎ、若干水が白いままでも大丈夫だと聞きました。これはお米のタンパク質が逃げるのを守るためという事で同じ理由かもしれませんね。

日本のパエリアといえば海の幸のイメージ。

しかし、このエル・パルマール村で生まれたパエリアは私たちの見ていたものとは違います。

特に名前付けされているバレンシアパエリアの具材は山の幸。これも細かく具材が決まっているそうで、ウサギ、鶏肉、モロッコインゲン、白インゲン豆、さらにアンティーク、ローズマリー、カタツムリなんかが一般的です。

これも米農家で生まれた米料理らしく、この地域で手に入るもので作られたのでしょう。

バレンシア市内などでは海に面している街らしくもちろんシーフードパエリアありますが、これもまた日本のものとは全然違い素材重視のシンプルなパエリア。

魚介は出汁などが味の決め手になりますが、お肉の方は旨味が凝縮された複雑で素朴な味わいが特徴です。

スペイン語でお米を"arroz"と言いますが元々の由来はアラビア語だそうです。アラビア語でこの意味は"leftover(残り物)" バレンシア語ではパエリアの鍋を意味するフライパンだそうです。

なんだが言葉からもその本来の素朴さを感じられます。

スペインでも今は全土でパエリアを味わうことができると思いますが、多くは観光用で言わば日本で見るのと同じ感じです。でも今回バレンシアでパエリアを食べてその素朴さと大勢で食べてる人々の姿を見てこの料理に人びとの繋がりを感じました。

最後に私がパエリアを食べたお店です。どこもとてもおいしかった！どこもお昼メインなので時間帯や予約など確認することをおすすめします。

I have dreams, big and small. Big ones take longer to come true. I know that well. On the other hand, looks like some small ones are coming true recently, one after another.

And learning how to fillet a huge fish -- like Japanese amberjack -- was one of them. :) 私には大小さまざまな夢があり、大きなものは当然、すぐには叶わない。一方小さな夢のほうは、どうもこのところ、次々と叶ってきてる様子で。 大きな魚－－ブリとか－－を捌けるようになりたい、というのも、その一つでした。

When I say a big fish, it’s THIS big (or bigger). My hometown is a small fishing village and Japanese amberjack is the main source of local fishermen’s income. Every year in early spring, when big schools of Japanese amberjack migrate to this area, the locals rush to the fishing port to buy good ones. The fish will be on their dinner table and sent to their families and relatives living far away. Usually it’s men’s job to fillet the huge fish. But in my neighborhood, some housewives can do it, too, and I’ve been wanting to be able to do it myself. Why? Well, my dad is a stockholder of the local fixed-net fishermen’s union (or something) and our family can buy their fish much cheaper than the market price. So it used to be our family tradition to buy one whole J. amberjack and have dad fillet it. But now he became too old for that and our family stopped buying a whole J. amberjack because 1) asking someone to fillet it for us is not easy, and 2) with my old parents eating less these days, buying a whole big fish is wasteful. It was such a shame not using our privilege. When I really wanted to taste J. amberjack, the only way was buying expensive, less fresh fillet at the store! Of course I wasn’t happy about that. Then I started thinking... ... What if I learn to fillet the fish myself? What if I find someone to teach me how to do that and to share the fish with? 大きな魚、と言えば最低このくらいのサイズのこと。 ウチの辺りでは、毎春のブリ漁が地域の収入の要。ブリのシーズンには、住民が港に駆け付けて、家で堪能するぶんと、離れて住む家族や親せきに送るぶんとをシッカリ確保します。 捌くのは普通男性の仕事だけど、この辺りではオバチャンでも出来る人がいます。そして、私も捌けるようになりたいとずっと思っていて。 というのも、ウチは父が地元の定置網の組合の株を持ってるので、まるごとのブリを流通価格より安く買える。なので、毎年1匹まるごとを買って、父が捌くのが恒例行事だったのでした。 が、歳のせいで父がもう捌けなくなり、加えて、今や両親の食が細く、まるまる1匹買っても食べきれないから、もう買うなということになり。それからは、どうしてもブリのシーズンに食べたくなったら、店で高い切り身を少量買うだけに。せっかく大量に安く買って、この土地ならではの贅沢を堪能できる特権があるのに、なんと悲しいこと..。 と、そのうち思いついたのが、 「誰かに捌き方を習って、私が自分で捌いたら？その教えてくれる人と、捌いたブリを半分こすれば、無駄にもならないのでは？」

... an outdoor BBQ at a friend’s place! 友達のお宅の庭で、ＢＢＱという段取り！

Anything tastes good when grilled over binchotan charcoal, but it’s especially so when the fish and vegetables are really fresh and locally caught/grown. 備長炭で焼けばなんでも美味しいけど、それが特に、地元で獲れたばかりの魚と畑からの野菜だとコレはもう... 💕💗

And these are the delicacy: halved heads and collars. They taste the best if grilled this way while they are very fresh (which means the fish fat is fresh). On the other hand, I like to wait like overnight before I eat the fillet as sashimi (sliced raw fish). The flesh of J. amberjack is rather tough when it is too fresh. I’d rather wait until it is softer and have more inosinic acid. 

Anyway, seasoned with salt made from Deep Seawater, they tasted heavenly.

備長炭でこんがり焼けた頭とカマ。 もぉこの美味さ！！この料理のためには、ゼッタイ獲れたてがいいですね。 魚の脂が古くならないうちに焼けばこその、臭みのない美味しい脂の香ばしさ！深層水の塩だけのシンプルな味付けが、ほんとうのうまみをひきたてて。もう夢中で骨に付いた身をほじってほじって、これがまた白いご飯に合うこと合うこと！ 忘れ���れない美味さでした。

Unexpected addition: seared largescale blackfish. 予定外に手に入ったグレでタタキも。

The BBQ was just great. It was definitely an unforgettable afternoon. 何もかも、楽しくて、美味しさに感動して、 ホントに忘れられないＢＢＱとなりました。

................. And, as I mentioned above, I waited overnight to make these sashimi and sushi. で、上でも言ったように、刺身と寿司は1晩寝かせた身で翌日に。

Almost every year, I enjoy J. amberjack, but it was very special this year because I prepared the food from scratch and the BBQ with my friends added such a special moment. How lucky I am!!!  :D :D
