The American College of Peds is pretty much like a “Crisis Pregnancy Center,” where they actively deceive people into believing that they offer abortions, but in reality they are an anti-abortion, Christian nationalist, hate group. The American College of Peds is running the same okie doke with their fake name (which closely resembles the name of a more respected association, American Academy of Pediatricians) and their proclamations about the LGBTQ community.

Edit: Elon Musk was not “fooled” by this. He’s a racist, crackpot conspiracy theorist who uses his platform to elevate the views of other racists and bigots. This is intentional on his part.

Unfortunately what has me concerned is the common labeling of various queer identities, especially trans, as mental illness. And the fact that it's not only still legal in many parts of country, but some states actually bar municipalities from banning it.

No I don't think that conversion therapy is gonna be mandated.

But I am concerned that this admin could facilitate a resurgence in the practice and that municipalities in red states could suffer the same rollback of their bans.

I think RFK Jr's idea of labor camps for mentally ill people is absolutely absurd but not because I think it's impossible to do, just that around 14% of adults in the US are on antidepressants and that isn't including all the other medications that creep was talking about AND that those statistics are pre-covid and antidepressant use has skyrocketed in the last four years.

The thing that made this possible in history, specifically the early eugenics movement of Nazi Germany when children were targeted, was how often being mentally ill meant being locked up in asylums and other institutions, where people were easily accessed and gathered by the government. That isn't the reality for most mentally ill people now.

I do think we need to be paying VERY close attention to in-patient hospitals and the like, even more than we should already be, because those patients will be the first targets of anything RFK and his ilk try.

Scotland - Ban Conversion Therapy Consultation

Scotland is currently consulting the public on banning conversion therapy. Unfortunately, it is not going well. The consultation has been brigaded by transphobes and it needs a lot submissions in support.

The Equality Network, who we did the Hollow Knight fundraiser for, has put together a guide on how to fill in the consultation form.

There is nothing in the consultation which limits the scope of who can submit their thoughts.

Please consider filling this in and help push to end conversion therapy in Scotland.

"Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear banned the use of “conversion therapy” on minors in Kentucky on Wednesday, calling his executive order a necessary step to protect children from a widely discredited practice that tries to change a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity through counseling.

The governor used his executive powers after Republicans who control the state legislature repeatedly blocked efforts to enact a state law banning the practice. Beshear said he would no longer wait for others to “do what’s right.”

“My faith teaches me that all children are children of God,” Beshear said during the signing ceremony at the Kentucky Capitol. “And where practices are endangering and even harming those children, we must act. The practice of so-called ‘conversion therapy’ hurts our children.”

It was the latest action in a national debate over conversion therapy and the rights of LGBTQ+ children and their families.

The Kentucky event stirred many emotions. Activists for mental health and LGBTQ+ rights cheered the governor, but as he prepared to sign the ban, someone nearby shouted, “This is a denial of affirmation therapy!” Supporters drowned out the protest.

Among those in attendance was Zach Meiners, a 34-year-old filmmaker who said he wants young people to be spared the anguish and harm he endured during four years of therapy as a teenager, which caused him “anxiety and depression in ways that I’m still unraveling.”

“I can speak firsthand to how devastating it can be to someone’s mental health,” Meiners said in an interview. “And I consider myself very lucky to be a survivor.” ...

Nearly half the states and the District of Columbia prohibit conversion therapy on minors, Beshear’s office said. In Kentucky, 21% of LGBTQ young people reported being threatened with or subjected to conversion therapy, according to the Trevor Project, a suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for LGBTQ+ young people."

Note: That last paragraph puts in perspective for me just how far we've come, even amongst all the hate. Fifteen years ago, not a single state banned conversion therapy for minors. Ten years ago, only two states banned conversion therapy. As of this law, 24 states now ban conversion therapy for minors, plus DC, with another three having some restrictions on the process.

I remember how amazed and relieved I was, when my state (California) became the second state ever to ban conversion therapy for minor in 2012. Now those protections apply to almost half of the states, and probably well over half the US population (I'm too tired to do the math but blue states tend to have significantly more people.)

They can't close the barn doors on this. It's too late. We're already out the door, and our rights are breaking out alongside us more and more every year.

I'm listening to an episode of the Cults to Conciousness podcast about gay erasure in Amish & Mennonite communities and one interesting thing one of the guests (a bi woman) brought up is that sometimes conversion therapy doesn't look like overt violence and attempts of sexuality conversion (although it does happen), because especially queer people in the social role of girl/woman in such communities will often simply not have their queerness acknowledged at all. The conversion therapy for this guest was when her father walked behind her and corrected her so she'd walk like a "proper lady", it was corrective rape and it was forced marriage, something she just barely escaped. Sometimes the conversion therapy is covert, like your community pushing you into marriage and having children so you'll be too busy to think about your sexuality, gender, freedom and self-actualization. It's not what we think of when we hear the term conversion therapy, but it's still violent, oppressive and has the same end goal.

One of the things that deeply hurt her was when a sociologist, an outsider, wrote about her community and declared that there were "no gay people" because there were not allowed to be any. It made her feel so unseen and even more like she shouldn't exist.

I can definitely see the parallels between that and how trans people have been treated historically and how trans stories are still often erased.

To believe that there are/were no LGBTQIA+ people in certain communities and time periods is to believe that conversion therapy, in any of its forms, works (which it does not).

Vanessa: There were days I thought I couldn’t keep going on like that, but then I heard your voicemail, and it... scared me. It made me angry. It broke my heart, but most importantly, it woke me up. I finally found the strength to escape my father and live my own truth. It cost me everything—my family disowned me. I relinquished my fortune, but in return, I’m free. Nancy: It should have because I did call you, Vanessa.
