in like a one person gets one, who would dicks soulmate (platonic or not idk) be? i’ve asked this to several ppl and the answers are usually wally, donna, or jason though i’ve seen some ppl say slade, roy, and bruce.
Anon your ask has literally been haunting me at night. I thought I knew the answer but then you hit me with a Donna!! But between Bruce and Donna, I can't decide so I'll just present a case for both.
Bruce
Bruce and Dick are soulmates on a cosmological scale. The DC universe ordained them to always find each other because they're quite literally a fated pair.
Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight Issue #23
Bruce: The only regret is that I'm out there alone. It felt good having someone at my back, being part of a team...but no sense wasting time wishing for something I'll never have.
Dick: He's cool, dad...d'you think we'll ever see him when we play Gotham?
The universe literally brings them together no matter the circumstances.
Convergence Issue #4
"The bond between you and Bruce Wayne echoes in every reality."
I don't think there's any stronger evidence for Dick and Bruce being soulmates than this.
But if that's still not enough I have more-
The Multiversity: Guidebook
In Bruce's world he lost Dick and in Dick's world he lost Bruce, but still in the end they somehow find each other. In every universe that has Batman, if someone is his partner it's always Dick.
In the medieval ages world-
Batman: Dark Knight of the Round Table Issue #1
The world of "A Christmas Carol" with Ebenezer Scrooge -
Batman: Noël
In a world where Bruce is a doctor at Arkham -
The Batman of Arkham
Dick is always there as his second.
Here's another interesting but depressing fact: In worlds where Dick Grayson has died as Robin, Bruce Wayne has never taken in another Robin.
This is because on top of the fact that Dick and Bruce as fated to meet, Dick means the entire world for Bruce. Like sometimes Bruce will come across a case with a child involved and the first thing he'll think about is Dick.
Batman: City of Madness Issue #2
Bruce's mind and life is literally consumed by Dick Grayson on a cosmologically spiritual level.
Donna
Donna is Dick's soulmate on a twin-sister spiritual level. Dick and Bruce are two halves of a whole, yin and yang. Dick and Donna though are one person. Their relationship is like taking paint and mixing it together to get something new. Like in those comics where two people look at each other and there's a "zing!" and suddenly it's an instant connection. That's them.
Titans (2016) Special 1
additionally:
Titans (2016) Special 1
New Titans (1988) Issue #89
Dick and Donna have no secrets. They're like a jigsaw puzzle, their pieces fall right into place.
He's always there for her-
The New Teen Titans (1980) Issue #38
They're so special and integral to each other that when an evil witch erases Donna from everyone's memories, there is only one focal point for her. One focal person for her throughout the years. Even though he doesn't remember her, Dick literally goes back in time with his future daughter Mar'i to help Donna, his soul-sister-
The Titans (1999) Issue #25
In every. single. moment of Donna's past Dick appears again and again to comfort her and be her pillar from Robin to civies to Nightwing. In the "Who is Donna Troy" Arc, as the story goes from the origins of Donna to the present, it becomes very clear that Dick is her centerpoint.
They're the definition of soulmates.
She knows him better than anyone else and he knows her. She even had him walk her Donna the aisle for her wedding. He was given that honor because of who they are to each other.
Tales of the Teen Titans Issue #42
I...
just-
Tales of the Teen Titans Issue #50
to love like that...
They're made for each other.

ULTIMATE SUPERGIRL READING GUIDE
since i've been asked a few times in the past for various reading guides for kara, i thought i'd compile them all into one post for the sake of convenience!
this guide has reading orders for supergirl comics in PRE-CRISIS (1959-1985), POST-CRISIS (2004-2011), NEW 52 (2011-2016), REBIRTH (2016-2021), and INFINITE FRONTIER (2021-present).

Why did Red Robin fail as an alias that Tim was transitioned into? Did it ‘fail’?
I don't have any special insight on this one, but I can give you a bunch of reasons that made it unpopular.
The main one however? It's heavily associated with n52 Tim, and people don't like n52 Tim.
(Heads up going in - I will be using cover dates for all of this, because working with cover dates over publication dates is simpler for me)
Tim used 'Red Robin' as a name between August 2009 and July 2018. This splits up as follows with the major titles he was appearing in:-
2 years, 3 months (August 2009 - October 2011) in Batman Reborn pre-Flashpoint as Red Robin (Red Robin vol 1):
5 years, 1 month (November 2011 - November 2016) in n52 as Red Robin (Teen Titans vol 4 & 5, Batman Eternal, Batman & Robin Eternal):
2 years (August 2016 - July 2018) in Rebirth as Red Robin (Detective Comics):
I wanted to put the photos up to help clarify the differences between each of these versions.
Yes, there's overlap between the last two, because Teen Titans vol 5 finished several months after the start of Tynion's Detective Comics run. The two characters are essentially separate - switching over to Rebirth was a messy process that took several months depending on the title
The majority of appearances of 'Red Robin' as a character are of n52 'Tim Drake', who doesn't have the same backstory, parents or history as Robin as the characters either side of him. He's the one that most long term fans of the character would rather not talk about or think about.
Tynion's Detective Comics run between 2016 to 2018 was about taking the characters therein back to their pre-Flashpoint characterisation, as much as possible. And you can tell from the costume, Tim was 'Red Robin' in name only. He was wearing a Robin costume that simply happened to have an extra R on the crest. He looked like a Robin, acted like a Robin, was doing Robinlike work for Batman, and when Young Justice 2019 started he got a costume update that dropped the extra R from the top and he's been using Robin again ever since (less the attempt at using 'Drake' as a code name in 2020).
So why did it fail? Here's a bunch of reasons:
People don't like the cowl design on Tim: even Marcus To, the artist best associated with Tim as Red Robin before Flashpoint, perpetually draws Tim with the cowl down and often with part of the costume off for commissions and artwork.
People don't like the new 52 version of Tim.
Red Robin was a costume that Tim put on back in 2009 as a punishment to himself while was was doing 'unRobinlike' things looking for Bruce, and once that circumstance was over, there wasn't that much time during Reborn to really cement it as Tim's adult persona due to the universe getting cut off and rebooted.
New 52 Tim was largely not associated with the rest of the Bats for various editorial reasons, making him an outsider that's unusual compared to the rest of his characterisation since 1989.
To show the difference for Tynion's 'Tec run and convince all the fans that new 52 Tim was gone, they decided to make a very clear visual distinction between the characters. That visual distinction essentially was making Tim into a Robin again.
If you're looking at character storyline for Tim Drake, son of Jack and Janet, the story arc effectively goes: Batman Reborn, Convergence, Detective Comics, Young Justice 2019. Which is a story of Tim transferring himself back OUT of the Red Robin costume as he healed and no longer needed it as a temporary measure, and regaining his memories and history.
I mean, why would DC want to use Red Robin for Tim? It's got the difficulty that Jason has taken over effective ownership of the colour red for identification in the family purposes. It's associated with times of grief in Tim's life (because Tim explicitly wears red for loss: for Kon and for Bruce) and with storylines they've excised from his history. It's explicitly a form of self-flagellation.
It could have been Tim's Nightwing, but it's effectively ended up Tim's Grayson period. Something that happened and is referenced, but there are good reasons not to return to.

On the 4th of January, Year One, a 25 year-old Bruce Wayne returns to Gotham after 12 years abroad on 4th January, months before his first outing as Batman (Batman: Year One #1). Unless his birthday is between Jan 1-4, Bruce turns 26 the year Batman is born.
Dick Grayson- 1st Day of Spring, 7 Years Before Batman
Dick Grayson's origin story is appears in the tail end of Batman: Dark Victory, which takes place in the 4th and 5th years of Batman's career.
In its sequel, Robin: Year One, Dick begins attending Bristol Middle School. And in Batman & Robin (2009) #13, Dick, as Batman, tells the Joker he had already figured him out at 12 but The Joker doesn't appear in Robin: Year One. So, Dick is probably 11 when he becomes Robin, in Year Five (Dark Victory). Dick is 19 years younger than Bruce.
Important for later, Dick becomes Nightwing, aged 19 (Nightwing: Year One and Batman #116) in Year Thirteen.
Jason Todd- August 16th, 2 Years Before Batman
According to his death certificate, Jason Todd was 15 years and 8 months old when he died on the 27th of April (Batman Files). His birthday is August 16th (Detective Comics #790). At this time, Dick Grayson was 21, having left the Robin mantle 2 years earlier; at 19 (Batman #436). Jason is around 5 years younger than Dick. He was hence Robin for less than 2 years, from when he was 13 going on 14 in Year Thirteen up to 27th April, Year Fifteen.
Stephanie Brown- 2 Years Before Batman
Steph is 15 when she debuts as Spoiler (Secret Origin 80-Page Giant). At the same time as her debut comic, Deathstroke (1991) Annual 1 has Dick saying he, one of the oldest Titans, is no older than 21 (the age he was when Jason died). Dick is 6 years older than Steph. So Steph debuts in Year Fifteen; the same year Jason dies and Tim becomes Robin.
Steph becomes Batgirl right before her freshman year of university, aged 18, going on 19 (Batgirl 2009 #1). This is in Year Nineteen. Which means that Preboot ends in Batman: Year Twenty as Steph has not yet entered sophomore year. Convergence takes place after of course.
Barbara Gordon- 8-9 Years Before Batman
Batgirl (2000) #45 shows that Babs was already Batgirl at 18. As an adult, Babs is 5'11" and yet she did not meet the minimum height requirements for the GCPD or FBI during Batgirl: Year One. She must have become Batgirl before she stopped growing, and so was at most 16 during Batgirl: Year One. She also says that she is older than Dick in Batgirl: Year One but they must be close enough in age for them to go to prom together (Detective Comics #871). My theory is that Babs didn't go to her own prom because she skipped grades and was or felt too young so her high school prom was actually when she went with Dick to his. Babs is somewhere between 1-2 years older than Dick.
There's more evidence for this. Dick is already a Teen Titan during Batgirl: Year One and in New Titans #89 said that he knew Donna Troy since they were both 13. So Babs likely became Batgirl between Year Seven and Year Eight, when she was 15-16 and Dick was 13-14. Also, Dick and Babs have a picnic as friends 12 years before The Black Mirror, in Year Twenty, so these ages are pretty perfect.
Important for later, Babs is shot by the Joker just before Jason is killed and becomes Oracle before Tim becomes Robin. This is in Year Fifteen; she is roughly 22 here given that Dick is 20-21 at the time. No panels just math :P
Cassandra Cain-Wayne- January 26th, 2 Years Before Batman
Cassandra Cain debuts in No Man's Land aged 17 (Batgirl 2000 #1) and turns 18 on the 26th of January the following year, though she only learns this after it has passed (Batgirl 2000 #33). Later that year, Bruce brings her to Jason's grave on the 16th of August, the day he would have turned 18 (Detective Comics #790). She is 7 months older than Jason.
Helena Bertinelli- 8 Years Before Batman
Helena Bertinelli was 8 when her family was murdered and the events of Huntress: Cry for Blood takes place 15 years after, following directly after No-Man's Land. Huntress is hence 23 following No-Man's Land. Cass turns 18 soon after No-Man's land, so Helena is around 5 years older than Cass.
But, Cass is born in January and Helena could be born later in the year. Helena Bertinelli is 21 years-old during Huntress: Year One; when she becomes the Huntress. She soon moves back to Gotham after Carvinal in Venice (late Jan-early Feb), and encounters Barbara Gordon as Batgirl. Babs is at most 22 here so Babs is close to 1 year older than Helena and Helena is slightly older than Dick. Huntress debuts at the tail end of Year Fourteen.
Damian Wayne- Batman: Year Nine
Dick and Stephanie call Damian a 10 year old in Batman and Robin #2 and Batgirl #17. One takes place before Steph starts uni (since Damian appears in Batgirl 2009 #1) and the other takes place during Steph's second semester of freshman year (Batgirl #13). So Damian is 9 years younger than Stephanie. He first appears aged 9 at the start of Year Nineteen and becomes Robin later that year, aged 10.
Renee Montoya- 7th September, 19 Years Before Batman
In 52 #14, published in 2006, we see Renee's passport and date of birth: 9/7/1970. It is the 14th week of the year so she would be 35 going on 36. 52 takes place in Year Eighteen, the calendar year Damian turns 9, so Renee is 27 years older than Damian.
She debuts as the second Question in 52 #48 the same year, aged 36.
Kate Kane- 14 Years Before Batman
Kate Kane is 32 at the time of Batwoman: Elegy, in Year Nineteen, since she was in the same class at West Point as the real-life activist Dan Choi, which means that she was part of the US Military Academy Class of 2003. Damian is 10 at the time so Kate is 22 years older than Damian.
Tim Drake-Wayne- Batman: Year One
Tim's age is THE weird one because DC are hellbent on keeping him at 17. It's too much for my brain, like how is he still 17 in Red Robin?? Let's say he seems to be only a year younger than Stephanie Brown a la Secret Origins 80-Page Giant or that he was bitten by a strange vampire bat during the One Year Later time skip. Your pick.
Fun fact: Dick permanently becomes Batman at 25 (in Year Nineteen), which is possibly the same age Bruce was when he became Batman.

I’ve been thinking about kory so how much of her willingness to kill to achieve complete victory do you think can be ascribed to Tamaran’s culture vs her experiences with slavery and regret over not stopping her sister?
I’m not sure if the question makes sense so feel free to go idk and delete the ask lol
I’m not sure I’m qualified to answer questions about Starfire… I’ve really only read her in different Titans titles, and I’ve not kept up with if there are new versions of her backstory, other than the original (raised in a culture where they let emotions rule and then being enslaved for several years).
That being said, if you look at the Convergence NTT book, I read that as that her years in enslavement is the most important factor. On the other hand, that's an out-of-continuity book and there might very well be other books out there that tell another story.🤷🏼♀️
If anyone who sees this happens to know more on the subject, please feel free to add your thoughts!

a random sampling of the Doom Patrol of the Tangent Comics through the decades
The Nineties- Doom Patrol #1
hailing from the not too far off future of October 1st, 2030 (which would have been slightly more far off in 1997 when it was published), a group comprising of Doctor Dee Dey, her metahuman daughter Lourdes, their android companion Rampage, and the woman now known as Star Sapphire, who was a 60s celebrity now known in the year 2030 as Star Sapphire due to a cryogenics accident, travelled back to the present day in order to attempt to change history as they knew it and prevent the apocalypse. Her warnings falling on deaf ears, Dr Dey came to be known as "Doomsday", and their group the "Doom Patrol"
The Aughts- Superman's Reign #3
The Superman's Reign series recapped how, in the pages of Nightwing: Night Force #1, the Doom Patrol had been captured by Nightwing and used in an experiment that turned them into the being known as the Ultrahumanite. The Ultrahumanite was eventually freed from its prison near the end of the twelve issue crossover by The Superman, as he needed its power to fight against the Justice League of the main DCU, tho he, and the Ultrahumanite, were ultimately defeated.
The Teens- Convergence: The New Teen Titans #1, & #2
During the events of Convergence, Doom Patrol were among those scooped up by Brainiac to participate in his twisted city games. They were pitted against the New Teen Titans, and had many difficulties and mishaps before both teams ultimately came to an accord and agreed not to fight. It is unknown what happened to them after that, but as the Titans were returned to their proper space & time, one hopes that Doom Patrol were as well.
The Twenties- nada, so far
We've not seen Doom Patrol thus far this decade. Maybe they'll pop up in Green Lantern Dark, or maybe they'll put in an appearance somewhere else. Only time will tell.

The New Teen Titans (1984) Issue #39
The deep emotional understanding.
The New Teen Titans (1984) Issue #10
What will it takes for moments like these again? Why is DC pushing so hard against this? I mean, I know why but seriously?

JLA/Titans Issue #2
The utter love and joy that's radiating from her face at seeing Dick- you can just feel it through the screen.
Justice League (2018) Issue #54
Kori will always kill anyone who hurts Dick and Dick will always love Kori.
My favorite moments are always how endearingly she carries him and how softly he touches her.
The Flash (1987) Issue #81
Pre-crisis I actually think they married officially even though the wedding got interrupted because originally Wally refers to Dick as Kori's husband and I remember a scene where people were protesting Dick getting married to an alien. I believe DC rewrote their stories to never having been married later on.
The Flash (1987) Issue #81
"Koriand'r--Starfire--is a solarpowered alien princess who can blow a hole in the side of a battleship."
Dick: "I love that in a woman."
After Dick and Wally rescue Kori:

History of the Hypercube and How it Saved Jon Kent From a Volcano
Superman (2016)
#8 & 9
After a vivid dream, Jon Kent constructs a device that when completed assimilates Kryptonian knowledge and reconfigures itself into a cube.
Krypto attacks the cube and it warps Clark, Jon, Krypto, and itself to Dinosaur Island. It is a place outside of time where they find countless extinct species and Captain Storm, a Golden Age war comic character from Our Fighting Forces that ran from 1954-1978.
They spend the next issue finding the cube so they can return home. Captain Storm sacrifices himself so the Kryptonians get home safely.
Superman Reborn
Mr. Mxyzptlk warps reality around the Kent family causing the timelines of Post-Crisis Superman and The New 52 Superman to merge into one.
The next few issues of Action Comics would explain how this all works and moves Jon Kent’s birth to Earth-0, but later in Infinite Frontier #0 The Spectre, God’s Hand of Vengence, would reinforce Jon’s original origins from the Convergence Earth and hint that this teen may become like a tyrant.
Special #1
The final issue of the run sees Clark use the cube to open another portal to Dinosuar Island to rescue Captain Storm.
They assume the cube itself came from Manchester Black as he had technology that was controlling the beasts of the island and on monsters he used to attack Hamilton County.
Adventures of the Super Sons
In the final two issues, Jon and Damian are trapped inside the cube by the main villain of the series, Rex Luthor. Inside is a white void, not dissimilar to how The Source has been protrayed. The Source is more or less DC’s in-universe mythos of the paper its stories are printed upon. Earth 2 Society and Dark Crisis Young Justice are some examples of The Source being manipulated.
The Hypercube itself manifests in the place and explains to Jon and Damian that it has existed in one form or another since the dawn of time in the DC Universe. Finally unable to stand being used as a prop for someone else’s story, it began to move and create under its own command.
Cube admits it created the galaxy the villains of the series came from, and it seems to imply it has knowledge of all things that have happened and will happen as well as that they are in a comic book but spares the boys of that burden.
Cube takes The Puppeteer, a villain killed earlier in the series, and brings him into itself with Jon and Damian alive as if nothing had happened to him. The boys use his technology to break out of the cube. It seems the only limitation to Cube’s phenomenal cosmic power is his box-shaped lamp.
The Flash #797
Apparently, moments after defeating Rex Luthor, Jon and Damian find themselves in the future on another Earth to help Jai and Irie West and Maxine Baker beat some multiversal baddies.
I assume Cube was attempting to save the boys from the events of Teen Titans 2018, Superman 2018, and beyond into what was going to be 5G by skipping them past it. The boys return to their proper time, however.
Action Comics #1054
In chapter 4 of "Lois & Clark 2," Jon is badly burnt by a flame. This story takes place between the handoff from Jurgens, Tomasi and Gleason to Bendis in Superman and Action Comics. This is somewhat of a discrepancy if this Jon is intended to be the same Jon who survives in a volcano for 5 whole years.
Injustice #1
The Joker nukes Metropolis killing Lois Lane and her unborn child.
Cube takes this child from the currently unknown Earth-49 and recreates the abandoned Superman: Reborn composite timeline for this version of Jon and Lois to live and grow.
The Man of Steel 2018
Jor-El picks up Jon and Lois for a little space road trip.
Superman 2018
Everything Jon explains to his father about his experience happened to him, however the Jon that returned to Earth-0 is truly the Jon from Earth-49 the alternate timeline from "Superman Reborn" with most of the memories of Earth-0 Rebirth Jon in place including those up to Cube’s wormhole the black hole. The amount of time Jon was out with Jor-El as described by in Superman #8 is now a completely useless measurement of time. Jon and Jor-El may truly have only been in space for three weeks by the Earth-0 clock before encountering the wormhole.
Jor-El tracked the only Jon Kent in the known multiverse through time and space to Earth-3 in the universe and hypertime he now found himself where Cube placed him five years in the past. Earth-0 Jon would fall through Cube’s time and space wormhole to a world that was currently uncharted but known to exist, Earth-49 the world of Injustice.
Having scanned all possible futures, Cube opens a portal for Rebirth Jon to escape through. This is why Jor-El thinks that Jon ran from him before they fell through the black hole. A version of him did, just not the one he ended up with.
Superman: Son of Kal-El
Jon is shown on a world that does not conform with the reader’s knowledge of past events in multiple flashbacks. His birth in the Fortress of Solitude is similar to the events in Action Comics #978 but not the same. Dick is wearing his New 52 outfit at a time when he should be presumed dead and acting as a secret agent or back in blue. Jon claims he was able to fly at age 9 when the bare minimum amount of reading comprehension would tell you he couldn’t fly until he was 10. Jon remembers his grandparents farm house after its destruction in a way the audience has never seen before. Not only were his grandparents not alive when that book was published, but these panels are reminiscent of the New 52 Superboy’s origin story.
Pa Kent would later describe the events of Superman 2016 #1. This is notable because it seems to again reinforce that this world was not changed during Superman Reborn and that Jonathan Samuel Kent was not the one to reiterate these events.
Superman & Robin Special
As Jon and Damian remind the reader of Superman 2016 #8&9 and Adventures of the Super Sons, Cube demonstrates its power once again by opening a door through space for an alien that ages years in minutes and through time for a platoon of Nazi soldiers.
This serves a double purpose to show the reader what is in store for these two. Damian is no longer destined to become like Hitler. Teen Jon will find his double and return with him to where they came from. Teen Jon has a younger double lost out there somewhere.
Adventures of Superman Jon Kent
Jon states it is easy for him to see when someone is from another universe by looking closely at their molecules.
Val-Zod states that time moves at a constant rate. Jumping from one multiverse to another alone would not throw the traveler through time as well. More importantly, Val-Zod then states that in the whole multiverse, there are many Jon Kents that are children and only two that are old enough to be able to assist with their mission.
Ultraman recognizes Jon confirming the volcano imprisonment did happen.
Injustice Clark makes a double-take at Jon and claims he has his mother’s eyes, implying that this Jon is his own biological son.
This mini should see the Earth-0 Jon perhaps around age 12 at most appear on this Earth.
In the final issue of the mini, Jon states that he has practiced sneaking up on Damian for years while holding the Lasso of Truth, yet for this would be a stretch to be fact. Jon met Damian at 10 and left Earth at 11 making their friendship truthfully less than a year in length before Jon became much older.

some countdown reread thoughts
btw heres the reading order for jason purposes--asterisk denoting cameo or single-panel appearances: countdown 51-48, teen titans 03 47, amazons attack #2*, countdown 47*, countdown 46-43, the all-new atom 13*, countdown 42-39, the all-new atom 14, countdown 38*, countdown 37-34, the all-new atom 15, countdown 33, countdown presents the search for ray palmer: wildstorm, countdown 32-30, countdown presents the search for ray palmer: crime society, countdown 29-26, countdown presents: lord havok and the extremists #1*, countdown presents the search for ray palmer: red rain, countdown 24, countdown presents the search for ray palmer: gotham by gaslight, lord havok and the extremists #2, countdown 21, countdown presents the search for ray palmer: red son, countdown 20-19, countdown presents the search for ray palmer: superwoman/batwoman, countdown 18-4, then the final issue of countdown.
for simplicity's sake its still readable if you do just want to start at countdown 51 and down to 1--is in fact probably more readable this way--but if you're reading countdown at all the search for ray palmer issues are definitely worth your time; otherwise the only one i consider vital is tt #47. i would also recommend robin 1993 #178 where tim calls donna to ask about red robin suit after that bc it helps tie up that thread a little (albeit not well).
couple questions to look up/theorize on: how long did this take, how many of the earths did they go to... after this Donna goes on to titans 2008, jason does his stint in robin (177, 182-183), then battle for the cowl (😮💨), but im not sure where kyle winds up so i should. Check that lol. i know at least at one point someone references two days passing but thats the only indication of time i actually rmr.
overall plot thread for "the challengers": the monitors identify duela dent as a universal aberration by the monitors and shes killed by the rogue monitor who later starts going by solomon; jason and donna investigate her death and run into the monitor jason starts calling bob, who tells them they need to find ray palmer to prevent the multiverse from 'sploding, or whatever; theyre on the run from monitors and various Baddies Of The Week as they do this bc jay donna and kyle are all considered threats to the sanctity of the multiverse or whatever; kyle shows up, saves donna, and joins the team; they find ray palmer, bob tries to kill him gasp shock horror betrayal; bob gets killed by solomon; the other plot threads in countdown converge around here (see next paragraph), and they're mostly just trying to get home with the threat of the next Crisis on the horizon; big fight; jason drops the red robin suit in a dumpster and catches the bus back to gotham with Harley and holly robinson (they landed, i believe, in metropolis, but i would have to double check that).
other plot threads: karate kid caught the most comic-book-y futuristic nanobot plague you can imagine, holly (and later harley) wind up in a gotham womens shelter run by amazons as a covert op situation masterminded by granny goodness who is masquerading as athena on themyscira, piper and trickster are... something to do with barts death im honestly not totally clear what their plot was supposed to be, and mary marvel grappling with gaining losing and regaining magic powers and uh rapidly oscillating in and out of being eeeevil. i think thats all.
so the plot itself is mostly coherent in the point A leading reasonably to point B sense all the way through; the major issue there is just like, 1) the infighting with the monitors being really poorly handled and the logic behind all that being so iffy as to almost be a plot hole and 2) the reasoning for jay and donna to decide to go along with and help bob the monitor in the first place being *extremely* flimsy.
the *character* thread that im struggling with in my mental retelling is how a little over halfway through people got randomly extra hostile to Jason--disproportionately so--and not even in a way where the thread was carried coherently from issue to issue. and on one hand the impact of "the challengers" on the multiverse was so wacky and comic book-y that i *could* do a copout and blame that (at least partially) but like i actually want to figure out where i think donna and jasons friendship can go from this and i *am* interested in the idea that donna was upset enough about jason shooting her as a fakeout to get the Bad Guys off their back that she rapidly changed her mind about him. like that does have a lot of potential. its just that the execution was all over the place.
i guess where im at is the same place i always wind up at with countdown or bftc which is just like. not having any one concrete idea in my head of what i think Really happened, just a fluid set of ideas that have potential to build off of depending on what im doing with any specific story concept. :/. o well lol

Pics:
1. Detailed & yet clear, Skartaris map.
2. Travis Morgan explains the Hollow Earth Theory - to friends & readers!
3. Mike Grell's cover artwork. Note Deimos rising out of the background!
4. The women in Travis's life - from his daughter to Tara, his wife, to his catty companion to the werewolf's lover!
5. Most photo-realistic shot of the Warlord, in his best costume of all time! But, the sword is a soul stealer that he destroyed awhile back!!
6 thru 8. Travis likes the life of a swashbuckler to that of a ruler. So, in that respect, he's different from Conan & King Kull. He's more like Solomon Kane, forever seeking a new 'crusade'...
1906: The Earth (is) Not Hollow.
Intro: DC's Warlord is an American comic book series about Travis Morgan adventuring in a Hollow Earth.
Plot: Travis was an Air Force pilot & Vietnam War vet who crash lands in the Inner World of Skartaris.
This is a land of advanced ancient tech, dinos, an eternal noon; plus, swords & sorcery!
In his fight to survive, he becomes involved with Shamballah's princess, befriends several shapeshifters (one turns into a cat; the other is a Russian werewolf!) & fights for the freedom of folk from tyranny!!
Yet, Travis avoided becoming the ruler of Skartaris, as he prefers life as an adventurer...
Homages to Edgar Rice Burroughs' Pellucidar & John Carter of Mars abound thruout the Warlord series.
But, it has the breadth to include some rarities.
In 1 story arc (#84), Travis becomes President of a dystopian future USA!
He even meets the Skartarian version of Death (#14) & escapes her scantily clad embrace - for now!!
During this adventure, Travis learns that he's the latest incarnation in a legacy of legendary heroes!
This relevation gives him the resolve to deny Death's 'allure!'
Given the chance to go home, Travis always chooses to remain in Skartaris.
And, when he has the opportunity to live in peace, Travis always passes it up. Mostly, because he's an adrenaline junkie...
It all sounds as being quite apart from the regular DC timeline. But, nothing could be further from the truth.
The Warlord has appeared thruout the DC Multiverse: in Crisis on Infinite Earths, Aquaman, Green Arrow, Teen Titans, Convergence, etc.
BTW, Travis has a sorceress daughter & a once young son - who's now heir to Shamballah's throne.
And, there's also multiple versions of Travis out in the alternate timelines of the DC Multiverse...
What we're still trying to figure out is if Shakira is more cat than human...
Criticism: There's a tradition, in comic books, of self-contained series that are a passion project for its creator.
Warlord is such a work.
Grell's series is a masterful blend of classic sword & sorcery themes, mixed up with the sci-fi tropes of Jules Verne & Edgar Rice Burroughs!
All the stories & art are excellent thruout Grell's run. The writer-artist's sheer joy in handling the characters is quite evident.
And, though it contains Hollow Earth & Land That Time Forgot tropes, this is a fully realized fantasy world.
The story unfolds slowly, like an illustrated novel. It's all wonderfully done - with special attention given to the beautiful, but, deadly ladies in his 'orbit.'
Weird Shit: Grell has admitted that his version of Green Arrow is actually the same character as his Warlord.
The reason for this is that Grell patterns his creations - as fantastic versions of himself!
Notes: There's been some minor changes made so that Skartaris can function within the larger DC Multiverse.
Otherwise, this Inner World would be affected by every event that occurred 'topside.'
Yet, Skartaris is too connected to exist solely by itself. I mean Apokalips once invaded it - looking for some mineral!!
Logically, it should be an alternate, magical plane - like Gemworld or the Land of the Nightshades...
Plot wise, this is made possible by the creation of the Paths Beyond in the 1st Shadowpact run.
This also fits in with the knowledge that time "flows differently" within Skartaris.
It's what allowed Tinder, Travis's son, to grow to adulthood & become heir to Shamballah.
There's some kind of accelerated time force involved here...
Output: Mike Grell created The Warlord for First Issue Special #8 in 1974.
Warlord became a series in 1976 & lasted 133 issues & 6 Annuals!
Grell wrote & drew the 1st 52 issues. Then, Sharon (his wife) wrote the title til issue #71 & Grell only drew the covers.
This was while Grell wrote Starslayer, Jon Sable, Freelance & other works.
(All being great work that you should find & read...)
Afterwards, The Warlord returned in various series in 1992, 2006 & 2009!
Sadly, the 2006 series was so bad - it got cancelled after 10 issues. This run is usually ignored in modern DC continuity.
Grell returned in 2009.
His new series revealed that Travis hasn't aged since he arrived during the 1970s!!
This 'timelessness' affects everything in Skartaris...
Like, Deimos keeps coming back for revenge. But, always in worst shape than before!
From having a scarred face to being a mere skull - on a golem's body!!
Also, Tara's death (in the 1992 series) was 'reversed.'
In the 2006 series, Travis got his Warlord title after leading a successful revolt of gladiator-slaves!
Skartaris was also retconned to be an alternate dimension, rather than being a 'normal' Hollow Earth.
And then, there's the 'original' Travis.
You know, the Warlord who led most of Skartaris's folks & animals in an exodus - to avoid dying at the final destruction of their world!!
They're still 'living' out there in the 'wild' - somewhere...
