I saw crazy rich asians and I liked some of it but it also felt kind of colorist and the magnitude of ostentatious wealth was borderline nauseating. awkwafina was incredibly annoying even if I didn't know about her antiblackness. loved the twist at the end tho and I was definitely like 👀 about the 'family doesn't say thank you' line
#staring at the changes cql made to the script going what does it mean what does it all MEAN#was wq saying thank you and im sorry at the end formalizing and distancing herself from wwx??#then why did wwx tell jl to always remember to say it - wasn't he encouraging jl to make sure people important to him#know that they're cherished??? man the novel is beyond me ig. but I feel like I understand cql#anyway now I know why ppl were glad that akwafina wasn't cast in eeaao besides the racism. she would have sucked#constance wu is gorgeous I loved her#gemma chan's marriage falling apart because her husband was insecure could of been interesting but it kind of fell flat#usually I love it when women stop feeling like they have to affirm their husbands masculinity but with this I felt like#s girlboss to be rich and not feel bad about it ig. also insecure men aren't 'real' men and I've always abhorred that as an insult#but my mom liked it so we had a fun time regardless#cor.txt

Crazy Rich Asians (2018)
While it would be nice for every story to be wholly new and completely unpredictable, there’s something satisfying about a film that uses genre tropes this well. Crazy Rich Asians is the best romantic comedy we’ve seen in a long time. It’s glamorous, romantic, gorgeous, hilarious, smart and expertly directed.
Economics professor Rachel Chu (Constance Wu) is travelling to Singapore with her boyfriend, Nick Young (Henry Golding) for his best friend Colin’s wedding. There, she learns that Nick's family is among the richest in the country. Dismissed by many because they don’t believe she will fit in, Rachel becomes determined to prove them wrong.
I watched Crazy Rich Asians on a double-bill with Monster-in-Law because of the two pictures’ similarities. Basically, they share a plot but the execution makes them so different it’s like they have nothing in common. You can probably guess the story’s beats but there’s a twist to them that makes Crazy Rich Asians so much more. When you see Nick and Rachel together, they’re perfect. She’s got a good head on her shoulders. He’s wealthy but isn't insensitive to the problems of the common person and doesn't flaunt his riches. The performers have excellent chemistry. They’re both beautiful people. The camera doesn’t shy away from showing you Henry Golding without a shirt on and Constance Wu appears in several glamorous outfits that make her look like a princess. You like them as individuals. You like them even better as a couple. There’s no reason for Nick's mother, Eleanor (Michelle Yeoh) to disapprove of them but she does. In her eyes, Rachel's upbringing means she will never fit in.
It’s not that Rachel grew up “poor” and that Nick didn’t. This film is deeper than that. Eleanor doesn’t approve because of the way Rachel was raised. Her parents were Chinese but she grew up in America. In Eleanor's eyes, Rachel could never understand the values the Young family hold so dearly. The opening scene shows Eleanor being discrimated against for being a foreigner. It generates sympathy for her. Seeing her judge Rachel later shows how much of a hypocrite she is.
You could dig deep into the film’s themes of old money vs. new money, of tradition and need to move away from them as well, the significance of the relationship between Astrid (Gemma Chan) and her husband, Michael (Pierre Png), or what it means to see a major theatrical release with an all-Asian cast, but ultimately, all of these are gravy. What you came for are some laughs and scenes of tenderness that will make your date want to hold your hand. That's what you get. The wedding Nick and Rachel attend is so beautiful and so glamorous. It radiates love so brightly it’ll bring tears to your eyes. It’s as romantic as attending a real-life wedding between two people you know are perfect for each other. You love seeing Nick and Rachel together. Seeing them having a great time with every luxury money can buy at their fingertips is rewarding.
There's so much going on with the cinematography, sets and costume designs you could watch the movie on mute and have a great time but then you’d be missing out on the comedy. Awkwafina (an actress who continues to impress with each film) delivers one big laugh after another. So does Ken Jeong - the funniest he’s been in years. Many of the side characters are quirky and memorable for their comedic values. The “serious” characterization is left to the main cast, with Eleanor coming off as particularly multi-faceted. She can afford to be. As in any fantasy, the leads have to be “perfect” to reinforce that anyone who doesn’t cheer for them is a villain.
Crazy Rich Asians is so enormously pleasing only those with a bone to pick against romantic comedies could dislike it. That said, I would agree with criticisms directed towards the conclusion. It’s a bit too long and does indulge a bit in some rom-com clichés. I'm mentioning this to show I'm not biased. The visuals, humor, drama and romance make Crazy Rich Asians a film you’ll be glad to return to over and over. It’s a terrific pick for date night. (August 7, 2020)

Crazy Rich Asians (2018)
Smoking – Disposable Face Melters (Lemonade Kush), regular cheap bud in Horu
Crazy how technology is so advanced now we can communicate all the away around the world with a single click.
I love the opening with all the colors swirling for how the word is being spread. Then how it connects to how the ladies in the church group when their phones go off.
This might be a shorter review. I love this movie and this strand is definitely has me zoning in in on the movie lol.
Needs a coffee refill ☕🤤
I would so be asking what bank he robbed to get us first class seats to another country. Like that’s so crazy.
Constance Wu is so the right person for this role. She plays Rachel so well, plus she’s gorgeous!
I so wish I could just go eat all of that street food. It looks so freaking good!
And my beyond favorite, Awkwafina! I love everything she is in 😍
How can I forget that Ken Jeong is in this! “There are starving children in America, you wanna be skinny like that?” 🤣
How funny that AWK mentions The Little Mermaid in this movie. Wonder if she already knew she was going to be in the new one at this point?
“Damn Rachel. He’s like the Asian Bachelor” ☠️🤭
Love that AWK has a ‘Walk of Shame’ change of clothes in her car 😂
Nico Santos, if you haven’t seen Super Store you really should. Similar character type as this movie. But fancier.
Damn Jimmy O. Yang basically killed a girl firing a massive rocket launcher looking thing. She stands behind it like a dumb ass and gets flung back and a sound like she hit metal. Good thing they are in international waters.
Had to have a lasagna snack! Roomie makes such good food 🤤
I love how almost all the songs in this movie are in Mandarin!
And of course, like any good RomCom a happy ending!
Toke on 😶🌫️
-RRR

Mulan but with Shang 🤔
LIVE ACTION MULAN PEEPS IT APPEARED IN THE INBOX
So let’s see what, oh what, can we do here?
I honestly love the idea of Ali Wong as Mulan. I know she’s normally played extremely comedic roles, but I can see her representing Mulan well. Not feminizing her at every opportunity, but showing the balance Mulan has as a character. Plus she’s a badass herself and I would love to see how she brings that to the character.
Li Shang - I really went back and forth between a couple actors for him. I list the other actor below the line because I told y’all I would. Obviously! BUT one actor I thought could really portray Shang’s emotional conflict, his determination to prove himself, and would definitely look good in a version of “I’ll Make a Man Out of You” was actually.... Alex Landi! (Plus, we know he’s a disney fan XD)
Next up, we got Mulan’s friends!
Yao - Randall Park. (Look, I love when he plays grumpy goofballs, okay? I LOVE IT. And I think that would be awesome.)
Ling - Harry Shum Jr!!! Is he great at playing hot guys? Sure. But I adore when he plays the awkward guy. Him as Ling would just be...God, I’d love that so much.
Chien-Po....I might catch hate for this just because I couldn’t find a bigger guy to play Chien-Po. But honestly, appearance doesn’t matter quite so much as how they portray the character. I couldn’t find a gif on here to add to it, but the actor’s name is Ki Hong Li!! Chien-Po is a sweetheart and awkward and like the definition of loveable. I definitely think he could do the character right.
Chi-Fu...gotta say, only one person came to mind for him!! And that is Ken Jeong! With how obnoxious Chi-Fu is to Shang? How much of a kiss ass he is to the emperor? We all know Ken would nail it. I mean, is there anyone better?
I know it’s a minor character, but I also want to cast Mulan’s mother. I think we should bring back our ORIGINAL AMAZING MULAN!! Ming-Na Wen is so amazingly brilliant and gorgeous and stunning in every aspect. Even as a small character, I’d love to see her make a return for this movie.
That being said, I’d also like to cast Mulan’s dad as another familiar face/voice from the original movie. BD Wong would be super cool for it.
I’m not going to cast Mushu and I’m not going to approach it as a musical because I know how much that aspect of the cartoon really bothered the Chinese audience. That being said, I hope you guys enjoy these picks!!
Honorable Mentions below the line!!!
Constance Wu was my second choice for Mulan, actually! She’s relatively unknown (mostly having been in TV movies and shows). She’s good at portraying women who have a difficult life, have had to make difficult choices - and I think her as Mulan would be interesting. Though also definitely different from Ali’s potrayal.
I did have a second choice for Shang, actually!! And that was Simu Liu. He’s going to be Shang-Chi for Marvel, so I can’t wait to see how that goes. BUT Shang shows all those secret “fuck am I gay” undertones, he’s trying to prove himself to his father - I really thought he was a close second. But not quite there yet.
Ling actually had a second option for me too!!! I know him mostly from the Good Place, but I know he’s good at playing loveable idiots. I’m just worried he’d lean too much into the “idiot” part of that and Ling is so much more. Still - gotta give it to Manny Jacinto!

Alright, so like a fool I watched most of the Oscars livestream and I know a lot of people are going to be real disappointed. I know I am. This was a very strong year for women in film, especially in directing. Women rarely get nominated in this category and every year this stings but 2019 was incredible and I want to tell you about some mainstream films whose directors didn’t get the recognition they should have:
Booksmart (Directed: Olivia Wilde)
It’s hard to believe that this is Wilde’s first movie. Now, I’m not saying that no one’s ever made a good coming of age comedy before but I’ve never seen one like this. Both leads are fantastic and have amazing chemistry together. It’s funny, it’s sweet, and it feels incredibly human.
Captain Marvel (Directed: Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck)
Marvel movies typically don’t get nominated and I’m not someone who normally gets upset by that. The Academy doesn’t like superhero movies. But this screenplay was perfect and while you can certainly tell who directed what sections, it is clear that Boden’s work was exceptional. I only know one woman plus or minus a bit from 30 who wasn’t moved by this movie (and I nearly fist fought her in the AGO but that’s another story).
The Farewell (Directed: Lulu Wang)
If there is any film that I am most upset about being snubbed, it’s this one. Awkwafina deserved a Best Actress nomination as well as Zhao Shuzhen in a supporting role. It’s such a poignant story and at times it’s simply hilarious. It gets both the immigrant experience, the Millennial experience, and what it means to be a woman living outside of familial expectations. It’s the best film I saw last year, hands down. And I watch a lot of movies.
Hustlers (Directed: Lorene Scafaria)
I saw this movie I think the week it came out and I’ve thought about it maybe every other day since. It played for well over a month at my Cineplex for a very good reason. Because no one can take their eyes off Jennifer Lopez. Her smoking on a rooftop wearing barely nothing under a fur coat and offering Constance Wu to snuggle with her has ruined my life. Scafaria portrays a very complicated portrait where the criminals aren’t heroes exactly but their motivations very understandable. And Wu and Lopez’s dynamic, their both mentor-mentee and unresolved sexual tension just like *chef’s kiss*
Late Night (Directed: Nisha Ganatra)
Now, this movie had it’s faults certainly. However, it’s a good story and Emma Thompson does some incredible things here. Ganatra’s work is subtle and in ways is a very traditionally made film, but it’s so well made that I think it’s very worthy of recognition.
Little Women (Directed: Greta Gerwig)
I did sincerely think that if any woman was going to be nominated, it would be Gerwig. Little Women is a very well loved story and this is not by any means the first or last adaptation of this novel. And I definitely won’t discount the fact that this has been nominated for Best Picture. However, Gerwig’s vision is something very, very special and it’s such a personal movie that for her to not be nominated for her directorial work is a real shame. The meta nature of the film, merging Alcott’s story with Jo’s, may have turned some people off but for me it brought a nuisance to a novel that I’ve loved for most of my life. Both Actress nominations are well deserved, both for their performances and for the hell Gerwig put her actresses through on set. But this movie was so shaped by Gerwig it feels wrong for her to be snubbed so.
Queen & Slim (Directed: Melina Matsoukas)
The Academy wasn’t ready for this movie. No one was ready for this movie. Lena Waithe’s screenplay and Matsoukas’ direction are not subtle. It has a message about police brutality that is meant to slap you in the face and you know from the very beginning that this story is not going to end well. But oh how gorgeous this movie is. Every shot is beautiful. Every line is golden. And Kaluuya gives the best performance of his life so far.
Please feel free to add on. I obviously didn’t see everything and I want to hear about the female directors whose work you’ve enjoyed this year!

A Year in Review: The 25 Best Films of 2019
This list may seem a few months late from the rest of the media, but I consider the movie season to stretch 14 months, from the start of the Sundance Film Festival in January through the end of the Oscars ceremony in February. This year's movie season was shortened as the 92nd Academy Awards were held about three weeks earlier than usual, commencing on Feb. 9. Of course, South Korean director Bong Jon-ho's "Parasite" took home the Best Picture prize making history as the Academy's first-ever non-English language film to take home the top award.
Now that the Oscars have officially wrapped up, and the 2020 movie season is revving up (to a weak start), I feel comfortable with sharing my favorite 25 films of 2019. From box office hits to smaller gems, below is a breakdown of the top films that debuted last year.
25. “The Beach Bum,” directed by Harmony Korine
24. “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” directed by Marielle Heller
23. “Toy Story 4,” directed Josh Cooley
22. “Alita: Battle Angel,” directed by Robert Rodriguez
21. “The Lighthouse,” directed by Robert Eggers
20. “A Long Day’s Journey into Night,” directed by Bi Gan
19. “Doctor Sleep,” directed by Mike Flanagan
18. “6 Underground,” directed by Michael Bay
17. “Uncut Gems,” directed by Josh Safdie and Benny Safdie
16. “The Nightingale,” directed by Jennifer Kent
15. “Hustlers,” directed by Lorene Scafaria
Lorene Scafaria's "Hustlers" might be the most fun film of 2019, composed of brilliant shots and serving as a spotlight to showcase Jennifer Lopez's talents. Mostly set during the 2008 recession, the film is a condemnation of late stage capitalism while following a group of strippers, played by Lopez as well as Constance Wu, Keke Palmer, Lili Reinhart and more, who drug wealthy men and steal from them — until their crimes catch up with them.
14. “The Farewell,” directed by Lulu Wang
An impressive debut feature from Lulu Wang, "The Farewell" is a special kind of family tale, featuring a breakout performance from comedian Awkwafina. Rooted from Wang's true story (which was first turned into an episode of "This American Life"), "The Farewell" is unlike any kind of family drama you've seen; a deeply personal, sad but ultimately uplifting film about the things we choose to tell (and not tell) those closest to us.
13. "Asako I & II," directed by Ryusuke Hamaguchi
Following up his six-hour film "Happy Hour," Japanese filmmaker Ryusuke Hamaguchi's "Asako I & II" clocks in at just two hours but still manages to pack in a number of the same themes. Here, a young woman named Asako (Erika Karata) briefly falls in love with a handsome boy named Baku (Masahiro Higashide) in her hometown in rural Japan before he suddenly vanishes. After moving to Tokyo a few years later, Asako spots Baku — but he tells her his name is Ryohei (also played by Higashide). From there, a relationship blooms and unravels. Similar to "Happy Hour," Hamaguchi's effortless ability to draw an emotional response from the ebbs and flows of deep, personal relationships (between friends, family, lovers) is unparalleled.
12. "Climax," directed by Gasper Noé
Gasper Noé is often hit-or-miss with most movie audiences. His films are always provocative and his latest feature "Climax" is no exception. Set in the 90s, a French dance troupe rehearses a routine ("Climax" opens with the single best scene of 2019) before celebrating for the night with some snacks and sangria — which someone has spiked with LSD. The rest of the film plays out like a perverse whodunnit while the group, led by Sofia Boutella, tries to figure out what's going on before losing their minds and allowing deep secrets ruin their lives.
11. "The Irishman," directed by Martin Scorsese
Martin Scorsese's long-awaited return to the gangster flick resulted in a three-and-a-half-hour epic. "The Irishman," which reunites Marty with Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci, also stars Al Pacino (the first time the actor appeared in a film by the acclaimed director), as Jimmy Hoffa. The film is Scorsese's most meditative work outside his films about religion. There is as much subtext to the film as there is text, making "The Irishman" a dazzling feat of filmmaking and storytelling, featuring outstanding performances from its three leads.
10. "Gloria Bell," directed by Sebastián Lelio
Since his 2017 breakout film "A Fantastic Woman," Sebastián Lelio's career has been quite quiet. Nevertheless, the English-language remake of his own Chilean-Spanish film "Gloria," re-titled "Gloria Bell," is a stunning piece of filmmaking. Starring Julianne Moore as the titular character, the film follows the middle age single woman through the ups and downs of her dating and family life. It's an unassumingly beautiful film that is gorgeous and features one of Moore's best performances to date.
09. "Her Smell," directed by Alex Ross Perry
Alex Ross Perry's career has dramatically shifted since working with Elisabeth Moss on the 2015 thriller "Queen of Earth." Instead of making quirky New York City centric love stories (a la Noah Baumbach and Woody Allen before him), Perry once again teams up with Moss for "Her Smell." Structured like a five-act play, the film follows Becky Something (Moss), the leader of an all-girl punk group. In what is Moss's best performance to date, Becky is an addict and downright evil at times as she manipulates those around her. It's a dizzying feat of filmmaking that puts Moss to the test.
08. "Ad Astra," directed by James Gray
Brad Pitt won the Oscar for his performance in "Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood," but "Ad Astra" was his best performance in 2019. Following up his 2016 masterpiece "The Lost City of Z," director James Gray continues on his path of making ambitious epics, moving from the Amazon to the depths of our solar system. Here Pitt's Roy McBride is on a mission to find his father (Tommy Lee Jones), who is literally lost in space. Roy has to confront his issues with his father as he battles moon pirates, rabid baboons and his inner demons. "Ad Astra" is not only an impressive film for Grey, but Pitt's turn as the sad spaceman is nuanced and shows how much range the Hollywood icon actually has.
07. "Honeyland," directed by Ljubomir Stefanov and Tamara Kotevska
"Honeyland" made Oscars history when it became the first film to be nominated in both Best International Feature Film and Best Documentary Feature — and for good reason. Clocking in at just 85 minutes, Ljubomir Stefanov and Tamara Kotevska's stunningly beautiful film follows Hatidže Muratova, a beekeeper living in a remote village in North Macedonia. But "Honeyland" is so much more than that; it's a universal story about our delicate ecosystem, fickle Mother Nature, taking care of our family and having bad neighbors. In what may seem like a specific tale turns out to be incredibly relatable, with Stefanov and Kotevska achieving some of the best nonfiction filmmaking in years.
06. "Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood," directed by Quentin Tarantino
Quentin Tarantino's penultimate film "Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood" is a love letter to Tinseltown. Here, he honors the summer of 1969 as the film industry is thriving with newcomers like Sharon Tate (Margot Robbie) and aging stars like Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio in his best performance ever). Rick is a TV villain and his stunt double Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt) is along for the ride. "OUATIH" is more of a hangout movie than something one would expect from QT; it's more in line with the sophistication of "Jackie Brown" than the over-the-top cartoon violence found in "Django Unchained." Like Martin Scorsese's "The Irishman," "OUATIH" is a contemplative and meditative look at aging, youth culture and America through the prism that is Tarantino.
05. "Midsommar," directed by Ari Aster
Following up his horror masterpiece "Hereditary" just one year later, Ari Aster returned with the daylight gonzo vacation nightmare "Midsommar." Like with "Hereditary" and its star Toni Collette, Ari gets a stunning performance out of rising star Florence Pugh, who plays Dani. She just suffered a major tragedy and is decides to go on a trip to a remote village in Sweden with her aloof boyfriend (Jack Reynor) and his college pals. The trip, of course, is worse than anyone could have imagined and plays out in complete sunlight, making Aster's daytime nightmare incredibly upsetting and one of the most vibrant horror films ever made.
04. "Pain and Glory," directed by Pedro Almodóvar
Spanish auteur Pedro Almodóvar returned last year with "Pain and Glory," unlike any movie he's made in his nearly 40-year career. It's a deeply personal film and one of his most quiet and contemplative. It also reunites the filmmaker with Antonio Banderas — in his best role ever — who starred in Almodóvar's earlier films and his 2011 horror film "The Skin I Live in." Despite it being far removed from Almodóvar's oeuvre, it still fits in snugly with his work, resulting in a beautiful and self-reflexive film about age, lost love and the past.
03. "Little Women," directed by Greta Gerwig
On paper, remaking "Little Women" in 2019 might have seemed like a fool's errand. But Greta Gerwig's take on the classic story, and her follow up to her breakthrough film "Lady Bird," gave a new purpose to Louisa May Alcott's centuries old story about the March sisters living in Concord, Mass. During the Civil War. Here, Gerwig assembles the hottest cast of 2019 (Saoirse Ronan, Timothée Chalamet, Florence Pugh, Emma Watson, Laura Dern, Eliza Scanlen, Bob Odenkirk, Louis Garrel, Chris Cooper and Meryl Streep), enlists Alexander Displat for the score and Yorick Le Saux to carry out luscious cinematography. But it's Gerwig's breakdown of the story and her daring changes to the novel that make her rendition of "Little Women" vital and beautiful. She manages to retain the Alcott's tone and vibrance while bringing something wholly original to a story we've seen time and time again, proving Gerwig is a master storyteller.
02. "Parasite," directed by Bong Joon-ho
Bong Joon-ho's "Parasite" took the world by storm. A true tour de force, the South Korean film started hot out of the gate, winning the Palme d'Or award at the Cannes Film Festival, blazing its way to win Best Picture at the Oscars earlier this month. And rightfully so — "Parasite" is a relatable tale about class struggle unlike any other film in its genre. Joon-ho, who has other masterpieces under his belt ("Mother," "Memories of Murder"), is in total control of his film; a true craftsman and storyteller, who knows how to build tension, introduce bits of comedy and create compelling characters. The film is complex yet fully understandable; a truly accomplished piece of filmmaking that will become a gateway for world cinema.
01. "Marriage Story," directed by Noah Baumbach
Noah Baumbach's "Marriage Story" is his most sophisticated and considered film to date. Following a couple (Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson) going through a divorce, Baumbach crafts a personal story with a raw script that is executed by astonishing performances from its two leads and its wonderful supporting cast (Laura Dern, Alan Alda, Ray Liotta, Merritt Wever). For so many films about finding love, there are few that are directly about the end of a relationship or divorce and Baumbach's intimate tale is a dazzling feat of not only writing, but acting and understanding of how all the moving pieces of a movie can coalesce into a breathtaking piece of art.

Oscars 2019 - Best Dressed
The 91st Academy Awards cerermony was held yesterday in Los Angeles and the red carpet awards have some very stylish winners! Let’s take a look at the best dressed of the event and the glam teams behind them.
(photo: Popsugar)
Charlize Theron in Christian Dior Couture
My jaw drop literally on the floor when I saw that gracious lady in her new brunette hair. She seriously needs to keep this look. She looked divine in the baby blue costum-made gown by Dior. Except her new hair look and the gorgeous dress, I loved the bright red lip which gave a modern twist in her total look. Makeup by Kate Lee, hair by Adir Abergel, styled by Leslie Fremar.
(photo: LA DailyNews)
Glenn Close in Carolina Herrera
I wanna be like her when I reach 71. She was a golden statue all by herself in that golden costum-made Carolina Herrera gown with a magestic loooong cape.
(photo: WWD)
Constance Wu in Atelier Versace
The Crazy Rich Asians actress wore the most eye-catching colored gown. This marigold yellow gave her her own princess moment on the red carpet and she seemed to enjoy it. Makeup by Molly Greenwald, hair by Derek Yuen, styled by Micaela Erlanger.
(photo: CelebsFirst)
Brie Larson in Celine
The 2016 Academy Awarded actress dared to go ultra glamorous and out of her comfort zone after a while. From the open back to the high slit of her dress, she oozed Hollywood glamour. Her soft waves styled bob was also marvel-ous! Makeup by Nina Park, hair by Bryce Scarlett, styled by Samantha McMillen.

Lucy Boynton in Rodarte & Rami Malek in YSL
The best dressed couple of the night kept things simple - in Rami’s case - but with an essence of a fairytale - in Lucy’s case. Lucy was elegant in her off-shoulder custom made Rodarte gown and a gorgeous styled bob, with which I’ve fallen in love! Makeup by Jo Baker, hair by Jenny Cho, styled by Leith Clark.
The best actor Oscar winner was very polished as well in his YSL by Anthony Vaccarello suit. Grooming by Marissa Machado, styled by Ilaria Urbinati.

Amy Poehler in Alberta Ferretti Limited Edition
I love a woman in a suit. And when she does it as good as Amy did last night, I am speechless. Perhaps, I missed a little color, but she wore the total black outfit amazingly that I don’t think about it anymore. Makeup by Kayleen McAdams, hair by Kylee Heath, styled by Karla Welch.

DEVYN XAVIER-LEHNSHERR, our COURTNEY EATON fc is looking for a BIRTH MOTHER connection who looks like PLAYER’S CHOICE who is 45+YEARS OLD. you CAN contact prior to applying at queenofillusionsx. (Devyn’s birth mom is a closeted mutant who was scared of having a child in case they grew to be one. When Dev was born with lilac eyes, there was no mistaking what she was, so her parents gave her up. Now she is at Paragon to make amends, but it is the one topic she gets angry at so she won’t be happy.)
DINAH PRYDE, our KIERSEY CLEMONS fc is, looking for a OLDER BROTHER (FULL OR HALF, CAN ALSO BE ADOPTED !! ) connection who looks like UTP (MUST BE AT LEAST HALF BLACK IF A SIBLING VIA KITTY OR FULL SIBLING) who is 24+ you DON’T have to contact prior to applying. ( not to be a cliche heaux but uh give me an overprotective older brother who dinah adores pls )
EMMA FROST, our KATIE CASSIDY fc is looking for her TRIPLETS WITH SCOTT SUMMERS / TWO BIOLOGICAL, ONE ADOPTIVE connection who look like DAYA, LIZA KOSHY, SAFIYA NYGAARD, SEBASTIAN DE SOUZA, HARRIS J, ANY HALF-INDIAN FC IF BIOLOGICAL / RHENZY FELIZ, HAYLEY LAW, ARIELA BARER, ANY FC OF COLOR IF ADOPTIVE who are 16-19 YEARS OLD, 22 OR 24+ YEARS OLD. you DON’T have to contact prior to applying. ( did u know that in an alternate universe scott & emma had five beautiful lil babies? bc they did. and with a tweak. that is what this wc is for. the frost-summers triplets would have prob had a psychic hive mind to rival the cuckoos if an attack hadn’t sent emma into early labour, resulting in one of them not surviving. the decision to adopt a baby in need of a loving home and complete the otherwise ruined trio? not an easy one to make, lets be real, but it was MADE, and the three have been raised as siblings from minute one. emma loves her babies. pls. give them to her. ) ( rohen frost-summers & open for two more ( bio ) )
ETIENNE BEAUBIER-JINADU, our ARIA SHAHGHASEMI fc is looking for a SIBLING connection who looks like NIKOHL BOOSHERI, TALA ASHE, YARA SHAHIDI, REECE KING, HAILEE STEINFELD, LALISA MANOBAN, MANNY MONTANA / PART IRANIAN IF BIO who is ANY AGE you DON’T have to contact prior to applying. ( the siblings were born in canada - their parents were good people but did the wrong things that got the siblings taken away from their parents. the two were together for awhile in foster care but were eventually separated into two different homes. etienne was eventually adopted into a loving family but it’s up to you what happened to the other sibling after they got separated! they were raised together. took care of each other. for awhile, all they knew was each other. they’re both mutants and their powers kind of reflect thanatos + hypnos, where tye is hypnos and the sibling has death-related powers like thanatos. the sibling can be half, full, adopted, fostered - whatever works. his url is svmnium if you wanna discuss things further! )
FABIAN TODD, our BOB MORLEY fc is looking for a BIO SIBLINGS ( 3 ) connection who looks like LIZA SOBERNO, JAMES REID, PARIS BERELC, KELSEY MERRITT, NICOLE ANDERSON, ASHLEY ARGOTA / ANY RELEVANT FC who is 18-25 you DON’T have to contact prior to applying. ( so they’re kids of mario falcone + his wife, though fabian doesn’t know it and doesn’t know they’re siblings because fabian was left in an alley not long after they’re birth. they probably won’t know that fabian is their sibling unless they became part of the crime amd mob part of their family,,, which would be really cool imo. )
NADIA KYLE, our ANA DE ARMAS fc is looking for a HALF SIBLING / CHILD OF TED GRANT & QUEEN HIPPOLYTA connection who looks like BLAKE JENNER, CASSADEE POPE, ODETTE ANNABLE / ANY HALF CUBAN, HALF WHITE FC who is YOUNGER or OLDER THAN 30. you DON’T have to contact prior to applying. ( correct me if i’m wrong, but a child of ted “wildcat” grant and queen hippolyta of the amazons is… pretty hot, and i’d love to see them around the place ! this one is fun, because nadia has SUCH an appreciation for strong women as someone who was surrounded by them her whole life, and while this doesn’t mean she’s directly connected to wonderfam, it does mean she likes to think that she is, and probably cites herself as being “five percent wonder woman”. i’d like to think that while her relationship with thomas is more on the strained side - as he remembers her as her true self better than this version she’s become - there’s a chance she’s made more of an effort, here, out of sheer respect for their mother, and as such… means they could be MUCH closer, which is a dynamic that i’m here for. )
NADIA KYLE, our ANA DE ARMAS fc is looking for an OLDER HALF SIBLING / THOMAS BRONSON connection who looks like ANY FC AT LEAST HALF CUBAN who is 35+. you DON’T have to contact prior to applying. ( where thomas really followed in ted’s footsteps… nadia really tried to become her mother, version 2, and that - i think - makes for a pretty interesting sibling dynamic. one is textbook good. the other… morally grey, at the best of times. i’m sure there’s love shared, but nadia didn’t really grow up around many males, either - especially not a lot who were older than her and related to her, so i imagine that she’s spent a great deal of time trying to outdo him. who’s to say she has? her relationship with thomas is probably about as strained as a sibling relationship she has could be, and i’m… so into it. )
NADIA KYLE, our ANA DE ARMAS fc is looking for her MOTHER / SELINA KYLE who looks like MELISSA FUMERO, JOANNA GARCIA / ANY CUBAN FC who is OLD ENOUGH. you DON’T have to contact prior to applying. ( it may be a little cliche, all considered - but there’s a reason that nadia has become the person that she is today, and that reason… is selina. the love she has for her mother, and the idolization that she’s always felt towards her, is unmatched. nadia’s upbringing was unique in that it wasn’t just isolated to selina & ted. rather, it was a combined effort of selina, ted, holly, eiko - and everyone had a huge role, but no one really ever outshone her mother. she’s always wanted to emulate her, because in nadia’s eyes, there’s no one better - and while she’s made mistakes in coming down this road, and while she’s done things that even selina probably can’t be proud of… it’s all been in hopes of both… being half the woman that her mother is, and being someone that selina is proud of. )
NAOMI DANE-SUMMERS, our NAOMI SCOTT fc is looking for a TWIN connection who looks like AVAN JOGIA, ALIA BHATT, GERALDINE VISWANATHAN, JESSSE RATH, KELLY GALE, SEBASTIAN DE SOUZA, LIZA KOSHY / ANY FACE CLAIM, who is 23 YEARS OLD. you DON’T have to contact prior to applying. ( these two have always been close and taken care of each other. naomi’s about 30 minutes older than this twin, she was born on dec 31st and they were born on january 1st. think wanda & pietro as kids. they really just understood each other and have been attached at the hip since they could remember. naomi’s very introverted so it would be nice if the twin was more of an extrovert - but personality and everything is up to you! only requirement is that if they have a mutant hair color that it’s not green - so pink, purple, blue, white, etc - all very cool! )
NAOMI DANE-SUMMERS, our NAOMI SCOTT fc is looking for a YOUNGER SIBLING connection who looks like HARRIS J, ALIA BHATT, KELLY GALE, GERALDINE VISWANATHAN, DAYA, CHARLI XCX / ANY FACE CLAIM who is 16-22. you DON’T have to contact prior to applying. ( naomi has never been the best older sister, but she does try. it’s possible for them to not be close and be kind of awkward around each other since maybe they don’t know how to be around each other? but naomi loves her baby sibling, despite being bad at showing it. only requirement is that if they have a mutant hair color that it’s not green - so pink, purple, blue, white, etc - all very cool! )
NAOMI DANE-SUMMERS, our NAOMI SCOTT fc is looking for a OLDER HALF SIBLING ( VIA LORNA & MARCOS ) connection who looks like EIZA GONZALEZ, KARLA SOUZA, SEAN TEALE, CHLOE BRIDGES, DAVID LAMBERT, ASHTON MOIO, TYLER POSEY, PETER GADIOT, MICHAEL TREVINO / ANY FACE CLAIM who is 26+. you DON’T have to contact prior to applying. ( naomi is quite close with marcos diaz so i definitely imagine these two having a sort of close-ish relationship. they’re not full siblings but that part has never been important in their family - they’ve always been siblings. only requirement is that if they have a mutant hair color that it’s not green - so pink, purple, blue, white, etc - all very cool! )
ROSARIO HILL, our MELISSA BARRERA fc, is looking for a YOUNGER HALF SIBLINGS / ADOPTED SIBLINGS ( 1 to 2 ) connection who looks like DIEGO TINOCO, TRINITY ANNE, EDEN ESTRADA, SOFIA REYES, CIERRA RAMRIEZ, ISSA LISH, DANNA PAOLA, ARIELA BARER, MANPREET MABRA, LAURA HARRIER, TRISTIN MAYS, LULU ANTARISKA, KEKE PALMER, TAZZY PHE, TINA TAMASHIRO, TOMMY MARTINEZ, MARLON LANGELAND / AT LEAST HALF MEXICAN IF BIO, ANY FACE IF ADOPTED who is UNDER 25 you DON’T have to contact prior to applying.
WINONA FALCONE, our SHAY MITCHELL fc is looking for a OLDER SIBLING connection who looks like UTP / ANY HALF FILIPINO FC who is 27+ YEARS OLD. you DON’T have to contact prior to applying. ( the oldest falcone ! mwahaha. so it’s this whole big thing that WINONA IS THE HEIR, but she wasn’t always. she has an older sibling who was disinherited from the family & cast out. a big ole family disgrace that none of them like to talk about. the reason behind this is up to you ! but it can range from being a MUTANT to a DEGENERATE to being SOFT to whatever. sofia is a pretty uptight gal. )

Crazy. Rich. Asians.
Is everything its title claims to be. I'm broke af so I think owning a two story home is rich, but after seeing this movie I now know what it means to be CRAZY RICH. Also it was so funny, and if we're being specific Awkwafina was the standout when it came to comedy. And as for being a rom com, this movie ran as far as possible from being deemed cheesy. Like you genuinely cared and rooted for the characters, and you truly wonder what will be the final outcome when all the cards are dealt, or in this case mahjong tiles. Another standout was the gorgeous Gemma Chan who isn't even the main character but delivers such a compelling arch that for a sec you question if she is (everyone in the theater clapped for her, whilst I screamed). But the most important part of a rom com is believing the love of the leads and Henry Golding and Constance Wu bring it home. Constance holds it down as such a relatable lead, who gets lost in this world of riches. The movie deals with how far one is willing to go for love without straying from themselves, it deals with identity, power, tradition and duty. In fact the story was quite touching. And the I love how all the women are fully idealized people and are at the center of this film. Because within the first scene it is made pretty clear that it is women who run Singapore and this film. Also every shot of the movie was gold with respect to Jon M. Chu, like I'm not kidding each shot was as rich as the Asians in it. In the end I cried, I screamed, I clapped, I cheered, I gasped, I laughed. So I'm not even gonna tell you to watch it because Asians deserve representation on the big screen (because like duh), watch it because it's fucking GOOD!!!
P.S If my wedding entrance doesn't replicate or top the amount of extra I witnessed in this film, I will not be getting married.

Tonight, the Golden Globes kicks off the 2019 red carpet season. So many of 2018’s biggest stars stepped out to represent their work and for many it was their first time. Soft colors seemed to be popular throughout the night and were among my favorites!
Kiki Layne
The If Beale Street Could Talk star made her red carpet debut in a custom blush pink Dior Haute Couture gown. The tulle, off-the-shoulder dress featured a corset type top which I absolutely adored. | Photo Source: Getty Images via Zimbio |
Regina King
Regina King accepted the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for her role in If Beale Street Could Talk. And she did it in absolute style. She wore a strapless, rose pink gown by Alberta Ferreti and shined in sequins. | Photo Source: Getty Images via Zimbio |
Taraji P. Henson
Is there a time where Taraji doesn’t slay the red carpet? She rocked the red carpet in a low-cut, emerald green Vera Wang gown. The cinched belt showed off her figure, the jewels sparkled, and the hair and make-up was as fierce as she was. | Photo Source: Getty Images via Zimbio |
Emma Stone
Emma is forever a favorite. Nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Favourite, she stepped out in a soft pink Louis Vuitton gown. The dress featured some elaborate embroidery and as always, she looked like a classic Hollywood actress. | Photo Source: Getty Images via Zimbio |
Constance Wu
This was such a big night for the Crazy Rich Asians star and Best Actress Nominee. As the first Asian actress to be nominated in the category after 50+ years, she stepped out looking gorgeous in a nude Vera Wang dress. She was one of the many stars who rocked tulle and I loved the little hint of color with the orange belt.| Photo Source: Getty Images via Zimbio |
Gemma Chan
In 2018, Gemma Chan became one of my new favorite fashion icons. She stepped out in a blue Maison Valentino Couture dress. She exuded grace and elegance just like her Crazy Rich Asians character, Astrid Leung. Her look was my favorite of the night.| Photo Source: Getty Images via Zimbio |
Kristen Bell
The Good Place star looked like a classic Hollywood star in a low-cut, blush pink dress by Zuhair Murad. Her and her husband, Dax Shepard, served some looks together. But my absolute favorite was just watching Kristen get ready through her IG. She’s such a relatable nerd.| Photo Source: Getty Images via Zimbio |
Kaley Cuoco
The Big Bang Theory star strolled the red carpet with her husband, Karl Cook. The cobalt blue and white dress by Monique L’Huillier also featured pockets which is woman’s absolute dream when it comes to formal wear.| Photo Source: Getty Images via Zimbio |
Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga looked like she was channeling Cinderella in a baby blue gown by Valentino. The train appeared to be at least 4-ft long, so she definitely had to have a lot of assistance down the red carpet. Joined by her A Star Is Born co-star Bradley Cooper, she presented the first award of the night.| Photo Source: Getty Images via Zimbio |
Danai Gurira
This dress was absolute fire – literally. The custom Rodarte gown was inspired by Zimbabwe’s national flower, the Flame Lily. She joined her Black Panther cast mates as they celebrated their Best Motion Picture nomination.| Photo Source: Getty Images via Zimbio |
Best Dressed Men
Justin Hartley is known for his role on This Is Us, but i’m over here admiring the former Green Arrow in a black and white Brunello Cucinelli suit.
Richard Madden won Best Performance by an Actor in a Drama series. And my heart melted for Rob Stark/Prince Charming in his Dior suit.
Michael B. Jordan rocked a custom Burberry suit and he never fails in a suit.r23s v
Timothee Chalamet was an absolute cutie in Louis Vuitton. He rocked that bedazzled harness!
Manny Jacinto had to be included in my list because his character on The Good Place is a homie and he cleans up very well in a suit.
Who were your faves of the night?
xoxo,
Adele

Below-freezing temperatures and bulky outerwear can make winter a challenging time, sartorially speaking, but come January, the gloves are off—both literally and figuratively—when Hollywood’s jet-set touches down in sunny Los Angeles for award season. Thanks to a blockbuster year in film, music, and television, the 2019 red carpets are an opportunity to make a major statement. Here, we’ve shown an early spotlight on 23 actors and musicians guaranteed to land spots on the 2019 awards season’s best-dressed lists. Let’s start with a red carpet renaissance woman: Lady Gaga is going to have an epic award season. We can’t wait to see what she wears to the Golden Globes, the Oscars, and the Grammys when she wins big for basically everything A Star Is Born is nominated for; her style evolution has been a true Hollywood glow-up! A close second and perennial team Who What Wear fave, Emma Stone is bound to inspire your next black-tie event look when she hits the red carpets in 2019. Think she’ll take any notes from her character, Abigail Masham, in The Favorite and go full baroque, or keep it completely contemporary with the latest from Louis Vuitton? Speaking of The Favourite , Joe Alwyn , aka Baron Masham, aka the first earl of Leicester in Mary Queen of Scots , is guaranteed to have a memorable awards season (especially if Taylor Swift is on his arm). The 27-year-old British actor had a banner year with four movies premiering in 2018, and undoubtedly cribbed a few style notes from several of Hollywood’s leading ladies—we have a feeling his star status is about to skyrocket. Of course, award season wouldn’t be a must-watch moment if not for a little healthy competition. Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie , two of 2018’s best dressed and co-stars/rivals in Mary Queen of Scots , are absolutely going to slay—sartorially speaking. Spoiler alert: There’s a clear winner in the film (and, um, history), but we’d be absolutely thrilled if the top red carpet ranking featured a tie between these two sensational style stars. While we’re revisiting history, let us remember the ground-breaking, earth-shaking, and red carpet–rousing movie of the year, Black Panther . Boasting an all-star lineup and memorable world premiere in which the cast paid homage to African royalty, we hope this stylish crew—especially Chadwick Boseman, Lupita Nyong’o, Michael B. Jordan, Leticia Wright, Danai Gurira, Daniel Kaluuya, and Angela Bassett —continues its winning streak throughout award season. Wakanda forever! Crazy Rich Asians , one of the most over-the-top and enjoyable fashion films of the year, was a feast for the eyes both on screen and at the red carpet premiere. Constance Wu , the movie’s leading lady, worked with celeb stylist and Who What Wear contributor Micaela Erlanger for the press tour last summer, creating gorgeous looks for a range of appearances. We love how they play with fashion together and can’t wait to see which designer is selected for the Globes in January. Fashion’s latest It boy, Timothée Chalamet , had an incredible 2017 with Oscar-nominated films Lady Bird and Call Me by Your Name , and this year, he added Golden Globe nominee to his list of accolades. Not only does the Beautiful Boy star embrace bold colors and prints, but he’s also reportedly self-styled. We’re impressed! If you haven’t already heard of Kiki Layne , don’t worry—you will soon. Her breakout film, If Beale Street Could Talk , an adaptation of James Baldwin’s 1974 novel by Oscar-winning director Barry Jenkins, has already been nominated for several Golden Globes ahead of its premiere. Kiki has a major year ahead of her with at least two other projects in the can, and we’re excited for her red carpet debut with Regina King, her fellow Beale Street star and Golden Globe nominee. Rounding out our list of film favorites is a newcomer, Elsie Fisher . At just 15, she has captured hearts as the cringe-worthy (in the best way!) ingenue of Bo Burnham’s directorial debut, Eighth Grade , which premiered over the summer. Elsie has already made an impression at smaller red carpet events, and she recently spoke to Vanity Fair about her affinity for suits, remarking, “I feel like suits are very me… I look poppin’ in ’em!” We couldn’t agree more. As far as red carpet style goes, we find musicians tend to be a bit more daring than actors, which is why we’re especially excited for the 2019 Grammys. One woman who never ceases to surprise us with her style chops is Cardi B, who is up for album of the year for Invasion of Privacy . Whether Cardi goes full-on glam, breaks a piece out of Versace’s archives, or debuts her upcoming collab with Fashion Nova, we know she’ll dress to impress—red bottoms, guaranteed. It’s no surprise that with the rise of the rosé wave in pop music came the return of cowboy boots . At the center of this ethereal yet empowering moment is singer Kacey Musgraves . The “Velvet Elvis” singer has already racked up several Country Music Awards but was recently nominated for album of the year for Golden Hour , transcending the confines of her genre, and presenting an opportunity to show off her unique mix of vintage-meets–high-fashion style at next year’s Grammys. We’ve had our eyes on Dua Lipa ever since she explained “New Rules” to us in 2017, and we were thrilled by her two Grammy nominations this year. Up for best new artist and best dance recording, this edgy British singer and street style star will undoubtedly make a major red carpet splash throughout 2019. Is there anything Tessa Thompson can’t do? In addition to her appearance in Janelle Monae’s much-buzzed-about “Pynk” music video, the Creed and Westworld star is a style chameleon who’s bound to thrive during award season—even if she’s just there to support her friends and castmates, the similarly suave Michael B. Jordan and Thandie Newton. Let’s talk about Lili Reinhart for a minute: Not only has she captured hearts as Betty (and Dark Betty!) on Riverdale for the past three seasons, but she’s also become a media darling, sharing insights into acting , acne , and of course, all things Archie. Notably, we love her brand-new campaign photos for the Mighty Company x Ilaria Urbanati celestial-inspired charity collection—hey, if anyone can pull of stars and stripes on a red carpet, it’s Lili. See you at the Emmys? If you haven’t already caught up on Atlanta , consider this an official mandate. You’ll probably recognize Zazie Beetz as Vanessa Keefer, Donald Glover’s character’s ex-girlfriend. Or maybe you remember her from Deadpool 2 as Domino, a mutant whose superpower is luck. Either way, Zazzie is definitely one to watch this red carpet season, especially since she’s being styled by Jason Bolden, whose other clients include Yara Shahidi and Sasha Lane. Be sure to look for her at this year’s Golden Globes supporting Donald, and hopefully again on the Emmys red carpet next fall. Finally, we’ve got the one and only Busy Philipps. Unless you’ve completely opted out of pop culture and social media this year, Philipps has been on your mind—or more accurately, on your phone! A forever fave from early aughts teen dramas Dawson’s Creek and Freaks and Geeks , Philipps has BLOWN UP in 2018 thanks to her hilarious commentary, candor, and colorful style which is broadcast via her Instagram, recently released memoir, This Will Only Hurt a Little , and new E! show, Busy Tonight . Working with stylist Karla Welch (who also counts Tracee Ellis Ross and Sarah Paulson as clients), you know Busy’s bound to bust a move, whether on the red carpet, in her nightgown, or at a tiny trampoline class. Think I missed any potential red carpet style stars of 2019? Hit me up on Twitter or Instagram at @Drewblahblah and we’ll put them on Who What Wear’s radar before the New Year. Up Next: From the Oscars to the Golden Globes, Cannes to the British Fashion Awards here’s where you’ll find the most glorious red carpet looks .

I will be the first to admit that I am fascinated by Asian culture. I love the food; the bright colors in the clothing and art; the multitude of gorgeous clothing, such as saris and ao dai; the architecture and art; the history and mythology. If you lose me in a museum, I'm probably in the Asian Art section. If I had to pick a single continent to visit, it would be Asia; I've been to Hong Kong and Vietnam but I want to visit Japan and Cambodia and India and Indonesia and Jordan. And if I'm bored and searching the international section on Netflix, I go to the Asian movies first. I've never had a problem watching a subtitled movie, and I love seeing all these movies that aren't popular in America because they're not about martial arts. The popularity of Asian films in America could be changing though.
Crazy Rich Asians is based on a book, one I surprisingly haven't read yet, about a Chinese American woman who agrees to visit Singapore with her boyfriend, Nick Young, whose family is basically royalty. I was so excited to hear this book was being adapted, even if I hadn't read it yet, because I expected it to be gorgeous and have a great cast. Thankfully I was right on both points.
It was a visually stunning movie, both the setting and the cast. Constance Wu and Henry Golding were perfect and had incredible chemistry. Gemma Chan was so incredibly poised and gave me such old school, classic Hollywood, leading lady feels. Like seriously, she has the grace and poise to fit in with any classic Hollywood leading lady. As for the plot, some may call it predictable but it is a rom-com so is that really a surprise? Honestly, I was surprised that Rachel didn't pursue Nick. Family is very important in Asian culture, and it was a big part of the movie. Does Nick follow what his family wants or what he wants? I think Rachel made the right choice in turning down his first proposal. She had to weigh her heartbreak against his family, and the truth is not every relationship will end in a happily ever after. Eleanor begrudgingly changes her mind, of course, giving Nick and Rachel her blessing, but I think Rachel made the right choice in a difficult situation. This was honestly one of the cutest and best rom-coms I've seen in a long time.
I can't speak to the representation, and I can't understand what it means to have a movie with an all Asian cast, but I can be excited for those who have been waiting for this movie or just a movie that represents them. I really enjoyed the movie and I think the cast and crew did a great job. I hope this is only the first of many movies with a diverse cast and about something beyond martial arts. If you're a fan of the book, see the movie. If you're a fan of rom-coms, see the movie. Really, just go support the movie and everyone who was involved in making Crazy Rich Asians.

i enjoyed the crap out of Crazy Rich Asians!
re: representation, at first i had literally zero interest in the film ‘cause i was like, “lmfao what kind of Chinese mother’s wet dream, i don’t give a shit about the Singaporean upper crust.” and to some degree, i still mostly feel that way! it’s a high key “asian” fantasy, but like literally, it’s no different from the royalty fantasy of Princess Diaries or such. plus it’s literally a romcom, so i’m not mad.
but honestly i hung so tightly onto Rachel and her mother. no spoilers, but shiiiiiiit, i wish they had paced the film a little bit better (esp in the beginning) so i got more of the Heart that came from Rachel and her mother. that shit is so fucking important!!!!!!!!!!!! broke my heart too, that entire scene in the bedroom. Constance Wu did such an amazing job with just all her expressions there, how sad she looked for herself but also for her mother and i was literally in so much tears. like, that was the relatable immigrant-mother-and-daughter content i needed.
there’s this weird thing where since “Asian American” representation’s not been done in hollywood in aeons, and the film industries of Korea, Hong Kong, Japan, China, Taiwan etc. are p lit, that we (the “Asian Americans”) can look overseas for “representation.” Except it’s not really representation, is it? it’s not portraying the various experiences of Asians abroad, and even with some shared cultural background, why would a Korean drama “represent” Chinese people? so even as i’m getting tired of all the headlines telling me to watch Crazy Rich Asians for the representation (like sure, you can shove 50 East Asian actors into a single film, but why won’t anyone tell me if it’s actually a good film?), I’m reminding myself that seriously, the political aspect definitely matters.
it’s just overall a silly film with good chunks of feels thrown in! isn’t it so funny that any objectifying-type gazes in this film is aimed solely at the men? What interesting intersectional politics there: the Gaze that has been so thoroughly used by white male-dominated media to sexualize and objectify women (”Oriental” ones, of course) has been flipped on its head to sexualize East Asian men, who have been culturally feminized and emasculated and not allowed to be objects of (hetero)sexual desirability.
plus there’s so much cultural relatability. all the family drama that happens at the dinner table, the brutal criticism adults like to dole out while laughing, the endless list of siblings and cousins, the food and dumpling making
the narrative is so thoroughly female-led! like, Nick was ultimately the only guy that really mattered, and his narrative line was.... not....... very..... . . cohesive.... lfmao. but whatever! Rachel’s cool. Astrid’s fucking?!?!? gorgeous??? i loved the introduction scene and her intrigue. the actual execution of her plotline was more tell than show after that imo, but FUCK if it wasn’t satisfactory at the end. She’s an excellent actress too, holy shit. That scene in the car???? bb. bb. bb.
i love the chick getting married. what a delight the whole way through. just, such a breath of fresh air, and so fucking real lmfao. i love love love asian girls like her. just live your best life, lady.
Michelle Yeoh is a whole legend, and walked the balance between disapproving iron lady and doting vulnerable mother soooooooo well. she’s fucking real as fuck. you’re not meant to hate her, which is a brilliant decision. i loooove the mahjong scene, and how Constance Wu did hurt and vulnerability alongside battle and anger. THE AIRPLANE SCENE. UM. BINCH. BINCH!!! just so well done.
criticisms? pacing of Act I left much to be desired for me, but i do think the ending more than made up for it. Rachel was adorable and it’s sweet to watch her relationships with people develop, but I do think she came off as just kind of generic throughout the first half of the movie. (I liked when she was angry though. That was just real and adorable.)
