After having five kids in eight years, going back to school to get a master’s degree in food studies, and founding Haven’s Kitchen (a multi-vertical culinary business—cooking school, café, and event space plus  a line of all-natural refrigerated sauces), you could say she knows how to get shit done. And while hearing her life story will no doubt leave you questioning any personal narrative that’s been stunting your own professional growth, her realistic advice is equally as refreshing. “I’ve sort of leaned into my 48-year-old female self, and I think that we approach things just a little differently… as opposed to, you know, I’ve got a dream, and I’m going for a $10 million valuation,” she tells Hillary Kerr in this week’s episode of Second Life. Growing up as an only child in New York, Cayne craved a togetherness that seemed to be lacking. By the age of eight, she discovered the power cooking had in creating a sense of community, and by the time she had her first child at 22, cooking was part of the gig she found comfort and familiarity in. Looking around at her friends, however, she couldn’t necessarily say the same. She realized how much “fear and loathing around the kitchen” there seemed to be, and so Cayne took it upon herself to demystify cooking, teaching classes from her home. “I taught all the way through having one and then two and then five kids,” she says. Though she wasn't comfortable charging for the classes (imposter syndrome, is it you?), through hosting them, Cayne gained an understanding of the roadblocks that made cooking intimidating for so many—knowledge that would prove invaluable in her career to come. At 38, with her youngest off to nursery school, Cayne decided to enroll in NYU's Food Studies program. She was ready to get rid of an old idea she had of herself—that she wasn't a professional go-getter. During her first semester, she was advised to get an internship, "which I just sort of guffawed at," she admits, but found an open position as the head of the education station at the Union Square Green Market, giving school tours about farming practices, agriculture, and sustainability. By the time she received her master’s degree, Cayne had created a professional mission to change the way people feel about cooking, and she set out to find a space where she could bring the home cooking classes and sustainability education she had been teaching at the Green Market together under one roof. When she found a carriage house two blocks from the farmers market, her vision immediately expanded as she pictured a café in front, classes in the back, and a bar on the second floor. “I figured if there was ever a time to invest in myself, this was it,” she says. And so, in 2012, the first iteration of Haven’s Kitchen was born. After tinkering with the business model—adjusting the number of cooking classes offered, rethinking the retail assortment in the café, and realizing the immense potential as an event space—Haven’s Kitchen has become a well-oiled machine. Since opening their doors in 2012, the team has taught over 10,000 classes, planned over 300 unique weddings, and hosted over one million guests and students. Still, in 2018, Cayne went back to the mission of changing the way people feel about cooking, and felt she could do more to fulfill it, “and that's why we started, you know, the CPG part,” she says casually. Cayne laughs when she uses jargony words like “scalable,” but scale was what she needed if she was going to continue working toward her lofty mission. With a focus group of cooking students to consult every night, she came to the hypothesis that by creating high-quality, all-natural condiments—think peppery romesco and bright chimichurri—she could provide more home cooks with a sense of excitement and confidence in the kitchen. To test the idea, she brought her initial assortment of sauces to New York’s Fancy Food Show. Within the hour, the Whole Foods and Fresh Direct buyer were at her table asking about case count and distribution. Today, Haven’s Kitchen Sauces are in close to 1000 retailers. Feel free to disagree with me (which I don't think you will), but Elsa Hosk is one of the most stylish models of our time. So when I spotted a style Q&A on her Instagram Stories last week, I admittedly watched it several times. There were lots of gems to take in (and don't worry—she saved it in her highlights), but the one that caught my eye was her response when someone asked what her favorite color to dress in was. Due to the current demand for comfy-yet-cute clothes for staying at home, I predict this adorable embroidered sweater—which our own Allyson Payer owns—will become a cult-favorite in no time. Honeydew Intimates is a top-rated lingerie brand at Nordstrom. This is its newest bra design, and I can tell that it's going to be a best-seller. The fabric is ultra-soft, the straps are comfortable, and the lilac color is very on-trend. When it gets too hot for sweatpants, these pastel $26 shorts are the next best thing. With many people staying home more than ever, the demand for comfy loungewear has certainly increased. This satiny top is as comfortable as your favorite T-shirt, but 10 times chicer. This new thong by Natori is bound to become just as popular as the brand's Natori's Feathers Underwire Contour Bra, which takes the title of Nordstrom's most-reviewed bra and is a consistent best-seller. As the only multi-brand retailer to carry Kim Kardashian West's brand Skims, Nordstrom is at an advantage to attract her many, many fans with the brand's new arrivals. I've tested out this bralette and can confirm that it's ultra-comfortable and barely noticeable after wearing it all day long. Leave it to Kim Kardashian West to convince ladies that we need a pair of boxers. As the weather warms up, these will be the perfect thing to wear to bed and around the house. Gold chain necklaces are a trend that has major staying power, and you can't go wrong with a chic $25 interpretation. These old-school sneakers are seeing quite the resurgence lately, with everyone from Rosie Huntington-Whiteley to fashion editors wearing them nonstop. Fact: Staud knows how to make a mean It bag. This latest addition is sure to become Instagram famous in no time. Ask any fashion girl about her favorite shoe brand, and By FAR is guaranteed to come up repeatedly. Ganni has a reputation for selling extremely well, and fashion girls clamor to buy new arrivals every season. I think this pistachio beauty will quickly become an It item because of its statement sleeves and on-trend pastel color. This is another pretty floral dress that looks like it could be by a luxury designer. (Brock Collection, anyone?) ASTR the Label is a highly rated brand at Nordstrom, and this new dress will certainly attract fans. I know a good deal when I see one, and this on-sale Topshop dress is definitely one. It has me dreaming of summer picnics. This already-popular Halogen dress has just been released in this new polka-dot colorway, and I think it will sell like hotcakes because of its easy-to-wear shape and modest silhouette that works for nearly every occasion under the sun. I think this jumpsuit can become a cult-favorite because it's a super-easy one-and-done outfit that's comfortable yet stylish. Plus, it already has Instagram fans like Tamara Mory, as seen above. Wit & Wisdom's jeggings have an impressive 600 reviews on Nordstrom's website, so it's only a matter of time before the brand's newest jeans climb up the rankings as well. Before we jump in, let me just mention that I’m an avid skinny-jean wearer. That said, I get that there are some of you out there that prefer other styles or are simply up for trying something new rather than those tried-and-true skinnies. Well, if that’s the case, what’s coming at you below will be of utmost interest. (P.S., If you still want skinny-jean outfit ideas, may I also direct you to this piece ?) Even though many of us aren’t wearing jeans right now (rather joggers and the like), I thought I’d round up some denim silhouettes that have the same sleek vibe as skinnies but aren’t standard blue or black skinny jeans. Choose wisely.Hair ties are kind of the unsung MVPs of our beauty routines right now, and call me high-maintenance, but my wardrobe of pony-securing scrunchies, binders, and bobbles is way more extensive than many might deem necessary. (I'm also that girl who has three different types of hair ties on my wrist at all times and an additional three thrown into my purse, gym bag, and bedside drawer.) At first, I purely attributed this to my obsession with ponytails. I have no patience for styling, I work out every day, and I also nervous-touch my hair, so it needs to be up and out of the way so I don't seriously annoy anyone in the same vicinity as me. But then, after consulting my fellow beauty editor Courtney Higgs, my mom (who has short, thin hair), my niece (who has long, extremely curly hair), and a few friends, I realized this is actually pretty normal behavior. Some hair ties are best suited for lounging, masking, and sleeping, while some are far more appropriate for that intense at-home HIIT workout or whatever extravagant updo you feel like experimenting with in front of your vanity. (Hopefully, we'll perfect said style in time for whenever it is we're allowed to frequent our favorite restaurants and other extracurriculars again.) Plus, one of the first questions hairstylists and colorists ask me is what kind of hair tie I use. Turns out the variety you pick can also have a major impact on the state of your strands. Since hair texture, hair length, and hair thickness needs to be taken into account, I created six different categories of "best hair ties" so Courtney and I could fill in the blanks with our favorites. As someone who's dabbled in bleach and extensions, I've had hair that's about half as thick and long as it is currently, and Courtney has also had her fair share of hair looks. (For instance, when I first met her, she had waist-length braids.) Curious to know which hair ties beauty editors deem "the best" for practically every kind of pulled-back strand scenario? Keep scrolling! Below, we're each sharing the six we love most. These spiral hair ties are my go-to for any pulled-back hairstyle. I love that they put way less tension on my strands, even when I wrap them super tightly. These stretchy ribbon hair ties are my favorite for working out. They’re not the best for ultra-thick or curly hair, but they’re wide and smooth so they don’t cause any damage by snagging or over-extending the hair. I usually wrap my hair with a silk scarf at night and don’t always secure my hair with a hair tie, but when I do, this is the only one I’ll use. My 4c hair is thick, but my individual strands are actually super fine and delicate, so I only like sleep in hair ties that are ultra-gentle and won’t cause any friction or breakage. I’ve been using these no-frills elastics for as long as I can remember. They’re stretchy and strong and can secure any hair texture into loose or tight ponytails. Once they’re in place, they’re not going anywhere. These bungee-hook hair ties are genius. You can use them to create several different degrees of tautness, and since they’re not bulky, you can easily hide them in your hair! This is my favorite scrunchie of all time. At first glance, it looks kind of wild, but it’s the perfect accessory for making a basic high bun look like I spent more than two minutes on it. I definitely need a “real” hair tie to keep my super-thick hair in place, but this fun scrunchie is the perfect finishing touch. Yes, they're boring, but these skinny ouchless hair ties from Goody are by far my most-used hair accessory. I've been told by pretty much every hairstylist that even though my texture is fine, I have a lot of hair. These keep everything in place but feel a little better on my hair than super-thick ties. Plus, they have the perfect amount of stretch for me, and I like that they have different color options. I love the blonde for some extra camouflage! I only wear ouchless hair ties, but sometimes they're not the best for keeping a ponytail in place during a strenuous workout. (Plus, they can stretch out.) These are specifically designed NOT to stretch out, last roughly three times longer than your average hair tie, have a strategic bead that prevents the tie from snapping (especially important during a workout), and, thanks to the bumpy shape, don't migrate down your strands. If I tie my hair up with these pre-run, I don't have to re-tighten or shift my pony even once. I'm definitely team silk scrunchie for sleeping, but I prefer Slip's skinnier scrunchies to the thicker ones, which usually slide off my hair by morning. The smaller size keeps the bun at the top of my head in place, my style preserved, and never crease. Plus, they're pretty, and I'm usually wearing one around my wrist as well. I'm obsessed with these hair ties, and I happen to think they're one of the best options on the market for so many reasons. Even though they come in additional colors and thickness options, I like these "Any-Fit" ones which the brand touts as universal for most hair types. The hold is super dependable despite how soft and easy they are on fragile strands. I've never experienced any slipping, snagging, or creasing. These tiny, clear elastics are classic and pretty much the only thing I use for more complicated hair looks, braids, or any time I need my hair tie to not show. (Celebrity hairstylists also always have them in their kits.) Plus, they're grippy, don't snag, and have really great stick so your style doesn't move. I mean, do I even have to explain this one? Never have I ever seen a prettier scrunchie, and it's one of those beauty items (despite being an admittedly jaded editor) that truly make me feel happier the second I wear it. Lizzo is also a fan, so there's that. I have the gold iteration that's no longer available, but this silver one is the one Lizzo has worn on stage. "I do really love my extensive collection of Invisibobbles, but for whatever reason, they didn't make my list. (I guess l like how they look and they do a pretty good job of keeping my hair in place, but they're not my absolute "favorite" for any of the categories listed above.) That said, these are always in close proximity, and I find they're a good option for slower-paced workouts like barre, yoga, or Pilates." — Erin "These soft scrunchies from Kitsch are always on my vanity and for bedtime. It's either these or the ones I talked about above from Slip. These are a really great option if you find silk hair ties too slippery for your hair—even if you're just sleeping. Since they have some texture to them thanks to the pretty velvet and faux-suede material, they can grip on and stay in place a bit better if you're like me and toss and turn all night. Although it might not feel like it due to the circumstances surrounding coronavirus, summer and all the cute clothing that comes along with it is right around the corner. If you've been keeping up with any of my articles throughout this pandemic, you know that I am taking a stance of optimism and complete hopefulness as it relates to this crisis. That includes my continuation of all sartorial content, including what clothing I am considering buying for summer—whether I will be spending it at the beach or in my home. Since budgeting is definitely a priority for me at this time, I wanted to curate a list of summer basics that anyone can score on the cheap . The best thing about basics is that they are versatile pretty much by definition. So buying basics on the cheap means you really are getting the most for your money. Including tank tops starting at just $8 and stunning summer dresses you can wear with anything, the below assortment of summertime basics are truly the best and are honestly getting me excited for outdoor days ahead, whenever that may be. Summer without tank tops would be like winter without a coat. It just doesn't make sense. Luckily, since this will probably be one of your most-worn basic of the bunch, they are also the most affordable. Whether you're quickly stepping outside to run errands (whatever those may be right now) or need a pair of shoes to walk around your backyard in (let's hope our circumstances change soon), an affordable pair of slides that still look polished will be beneficial time and time again. If you ask me, the flowier the midi dress, the better. This way, no matter what the temperature, you won't be constricted by the garment on your back. This dress style also doubles as a great swimsuit coverup. Jean shorts are basically the leggings of summer… just not as comfortable (you get the idea). Hot summertime tip: Buy a black one-piece that you love and wear it not only as a swimsuit, but also as a bodysuit with all of your jeans, skirts, and more. From block heels to kitten, this shoe style will be another major go-to. If you're anything like me, you lose sunglasses left and right. This means buying cheap pairs is probably your best bet. As a remote editor who's been working from home since 2015, I have to admit that I've gotten pretty lazy with my WFH wardrobe (as in sweats and slippers on most days). Until now, that is. Once most of the country went under a stay-at-home order last month for the foreseeable future, everyone started talking about WFH style, Zoom calls became a thing, and I realized it was time to snap out of my house-wardrobe funk. Given the lack of celebrity street style these days, I've been very curious to see what they're wearing at home, and one of the celebs that I've found to excel at the whole stay-home-dressing thing is Emma Roberts . She has been documenting her looks daily on Instagram, and each one is even better than the last. So who better to give me some WFH wardrobe upgrade tips than her stylists, Brit Elkin Hines and Kara Smith? I asked the stylists everything from who makes the best house shoes to what to swap a full sweatsuit for in the summer. Feeling comfortable is most important when you’re at home, and not compromising style is the key.  The act of putting on an outfit in the morning when you WFH is important because it lifts your mood and makes you feel more motivated. Nothing is wrong with adding a little lip color either. How can I make some of my favorite "outside" clothes (like spring dresses and skirts) more "inside" appropriate? ​Making outside clothes inside appropriate is easy by switching up the shoes (opting for comfortable flats or slides) or swapping out the top/bottom for more at-home pieces. If you have a skirt or dress, style it with an oversize cozy sweater. If you have a cute top, style it with a pair of cashmere pants.
