Damian Wayne: The Romantic

ever since damian's inception, he's always had a soft spot for romance, true love, and happy families. in particular, he always wanted his mother and father to make amends and come together to form a happy home, a cohesive unit.

let's talk about it!

as you can see, we get the first inkling of his inclination towards romance with this moment. yes, i know... talia's character was ruined the very moment morrison touched her. it's not as if she wasn't a romantic herself, though.

seriously, how romantic is that? absolute poetry.

it only makes sense, then, that damian ended up the way he did. let's explore that a bit more, shall we?

you'll notice that in his earliest appearances, damian's speech patterns were much more... casual. they weren't yet elevated to the levels of a spoiled prince. his message remains, though. if his grandfather loved this woman, why didn't he simply give her a happily ever after? spoken like a true romantic, damian...

in this case, of course, damian is referring to familial love - but it still speaks to his heart. it's a sort of... "love will conquer all" mentality, and it drives him. it's embedded into his character already, and this is only the resurrection of ra's al ghul arc.

...there is more evidence of damian being a sucker for romance in battle for the cowl, but we can all agree to just skip over that, yeah? let's move on to his run as robin.

damian isn't very subtle, but he also isn't very open about wanting romance for *himself.* he obviously does want it for himself - but he's not going to just up and admit it. hence the "what's it to you?"

damian oh-so enjoys the affectionate attention of women. again, he puts up an attitude about it, but it's all to disguise his inner enjoyment of it all.

when faced with an enemy attempting to seduce him, damian is very much *against* being taken advantage of. unlike the woman playfully calling him adorable, this is an actual threat. not only that, but note his exact words - "won't -- feel that way -- yet --"

this is not how he wants it to go. he doesn't want to feel unsafe, in the arms of a dangerous predator. when it does happen - which he expects it to, someday - it won't be anything like this. the only other way for it to be, though... is soft. warm. romantic. most of all, he wants to pursue it when he's *ready* for it. he'll express himself in the little ways, such as asking if katana is single, but he won't make any big moves. he's just a kid, but he's also just not that kind of person.

he's wise enough about romance to understand that he's just not ready for this *yet.*

this is another instance of familial love rather than romantic love, however... it is also another instance of damian wearing his heart on his sleeve. he just wants to be loved for who he is, it's another piece of his very, very loving mentality. he is a sensitive soul, deep down.

stephanie calls damian out for looking at her chest - of course, he denies it. (he can't have stephanie thinking he's some lecher.) naturally, he denies it by insulting her. that's just about how it usually goes for these two.

at this point, damian has gotten good at using a good bit of teasing to repress his crushes. there's a real air of jealousy in how much he *emphasized* the word "boyfriend."

even dick and barbara seem to agree that robin and batgirl of today mirror the robin and batgirl of yesterday. (if you'll recall, dick absolutely had a huge crush on barbara. it's kind of the whole reason they became a thing after a while.) dick already knows about damian's interest in older women... and given his own interest in older women, i doubt he cares that much - as long as it's just an unrequited crush from damian. (i'm sure dick wouldn't be okay with it if stephanie accepted the affections of an underage boy, even if that boy is damian.)

as you can see, the teasing continues for a while.

damian once again can't behave himself around stephanie, but this time, he's even more forwardly mocking her appearance. well, mostly just her chest, but still. i fear that he knows older women are out of the question, so the best he can do is tease them. it's not as if that sort of flirting isn't being modeled for him on the daily by every vigilante in gotham. he was so much more pure of heart before he met the bats...

at this time, this might've been the *first* time that damian has ever actually given a... compliment? to tim. it's definitely the first time he's congratulated him. what can he say? he loves a little romance, even when it comes to the person he hates most. it probably helps that the engagement isn't to a woman he has a crush on himself.

as was the case with stephanie, with kara, damian also resorts to teasing - it's a bit less obvious if he truly has a crush on her, but if dick is on his case about it... he's usually right, that's all.

(batman and robin v1 #18, written by paul cornell)

this gives a bit more insight into why damian now chooses to repress his romantic side (and instead resorts to teasing those he has a crush on). of course, he knew his own parents' relationship was complicated... but nothing quite like this. he's had to bare witness to just how fake his father's affections can be towards other women, and he aches at the mere thought of becoming anything like that. he'd rather not date at all then *pretend* to like someone.

he'd much rather pretend *not* to like someone to protect everyone involved from the chaos that their own feelings may bring. he knows it all too well now, what indulging in your emotions can do to people. but his loving heart never left him. he tried hardening it, that's all... but if he truly didn't care about romance anymore, he wouldn't see such an issue with bruce's playboy ways. he's an advocate of true love - not whatever the hell that is.

...i hope that helped to illuminate the ways in which damian explores romance and affection (in many forms)! after ingratiating himself to gotham city, damian found himself repressing his crushes more and more, likely due to the environment surrounding him. the other vigilantes all tangle themselves into knots, and it seems that damian would personally rather avoid coming to terms with his own affections, especially when he knows they'll lead absolutely nowhere. as much as he likes to pretend that he's older than he really is, he's not an idiot. he knows what he isn't ready for, even if he really wants it someday. even if the concept of true love pervades his very mindset. it's something he really, really wants... for his parents, and for himself... someday. when he feels ready for it - ready to accept that it may cause trouble, just as it did for his parents, and for the countless villains he faces on a day-to-day basis. he'll overcome it all when he's ready.

The thing about comics canon is that sometimes the level of complexity is off the charts.

Take Barbara and Jim Gordon’s relationship.

Babs is Jim’s daughter. That’s a truth in all continuities.

But her birth parents?

Are they Jim Gordon and Thelma/Barbara Gordon (Silver Age, Who's Who: The Definitive Directory of the DC Universe #2), where her biological brother is Tony Gordon? (Pre-crisis can’t decide on what Barbara’s mother’s name is and how many times Jim’s been married)

Are they Roger Gordon and Thelma Gordon (post-Crisis, Secret Origins v2 #20), where Jim and Barbara Eileen adopted Babs after her parents died in a car crash and her cousin and adoptive brother is James Gordon Jnr?

Are they Jim Gordon and Thelma Gordon (post-Crisis, Gotham Knights #6), where Jim had an affair with his sister-in-law that may have resulted in the pregnancy that led to Barbara, and her half-brother is James Gordon Jnr?

Are they Jim Gordon and Barbara Eileen Gordon (new 52, Batgirl v4 #5) where her biological brother is James Gordon Jnr?

Because each of these graduations changes things. Tony is Babs’ older brother. James Jnr is her younger brother.

James Jnr’s psychopathy has an additional twist to it if Barbara joined the family as a pre-teen, where he’s already acting out and being creepy, as does Barbara Eileen leaving with James Jnr. She’s legitimately terrified for her life about her new sibling and nobody is listening.

Whereas if James Jnr is her biological brother and they grew up together, Barbara’s been watching him his entire life, and seen his slide and so spent her childhood questioning herself on how bad he’s become makes even more sense, because that’s her little brother. But also she found him torturing animals, she can never be sure if the action he just took was meant to hurt or to help, etc etc.

And each permutation of this story brings a different edge to Babs’ childhood and backstory. But simultaneously there’s a central truth – the person Barbara calls Dad is Jim Gordon, and that aspect of their relationship on page has never, ever changed.

Poison Ivy's one of those characters where all her fans love totally different versions of her from totally different comics for totally different reasons and they will all fight each other if you bring it up. For the record the comics I would call quintessential reading for her are Batgirl V4 Annual 2 and Gotham City Sirens. Just to give some context for what I mean when I say I'm a fan of Poison Ivy.

basic answer but probably Robin: son of batman

it introduced my favourite damian friends/found family, it shows a talia that cares for her kid, the story is fun n cute

my only complaint is how short it is and how little it impacts his comic runs after it but that was out of everyone's control but.

but a couple issues featuring damian that i also really like:

state of comics reading:

last major marker: forever evil

read the follow up issues in justice league, and though i did actually enjoy them, i'm deciding not to get entangled in yet another run that opens up a whole new area of the universe yet

finished up Teen Titans v4, since the ending is all basically contiguous from forever evil

finished up birds of prey

hit a bunch of little bat appearances, including a number of super/bat teamups. i know the snipers are lining up at the mere suggestion jason might be angry, but there really is something to the #angerissues n52 team up of him and kara.

two issues of batgirl that come after forever evil

(since TTv4 mostly involved traveling to the future and they just got back at the end, I'm not sure any of them even know about the end of forever evil. Which means so far Babs is the only one I've seen react to Dick's "death", and I'm very curious to find out how much or little it will be addressed in other books!)

will be continuing batman (which is now emerging from zero year), detective comics, batman & robin, and (unfortunately) rh*to and batgirl. And starting grayson, TTv5, and gotham academy. Plus closing out the ending of superboy...

but first! gotta start batman eternal. Which is weekly, so i'll be reading a whole lot of it in a relatively short time.

At some point, I guess I'll pause to do future's end? far as I can tell, that one isn't actually incorporated in continuity but is one of those "potential future" storylines, so no idea if i'll read it roughly when it came out or way off.

(also after batman eternal is batman and robin eternal. and i KNOW that one of these runs is widely hated and considered to be awful, but for the life of me i can NEVER remember which one. And don't tell me!!! I am weirdly excited at the prospect of going into the run truly not knowing how good/bad it's going to be.)

Hi! What comics/issues have Dick as Batman with Dami as his Robin?

Heya!

Ok so Bruce dies in Final Crisis and Dick assumes the mantle in Battle for the Cowl which kinda sucks but also has some good moments

We see the start of the Dick/Dami partnerships in New 52 Batman and Robin starting with Batman: Reborn, Batman vs Robin and Batman and Robin must Die I believe its called. These are Morrison penned showing the progression of the relationship. I say the stories are eh but the development of the Dick/Dami partnership is great man. We also see bits of Dick and Dami in other people's stories during this time like Red Robin or Batgirl v4 (Steph's run).

Then B comes back but Dick is still kinda serving of Batman, notable examples include: Gates of Gotham, Streets of Gotham, Black Mirror also is a famous example of Dick Batman sans Damian.

DC Rebirth ; avis pas critique

Avant de commencer il y a quelque chose d’important à clarifier ; je ne suis pas, en ce moment, dans une phase “Pro-Marvel”. En terme de comics, je n’ai rien lu de concret depuis la fin de Secret Wars en kiosque (j’ai depuis lu les Amazing Spider-man V4 et Miss Marvel). En terme de films, il faut remonter jusqu’à Civil War pour retrouver mon dernier gros kiff Marvel au cinéma même si j’ai beaucoup aimé Dr.Strange. A la fin de Secret Wars, je m’étais fait la promesse de profiter de cette “fin” de Marvel pour donner une chance à DC Comics. Ca tombait bien, on parlait alors beaucoup de Rebirth, le nouvel gros event DC, un relaunch aux airs de reboot. PAR-FAIT. Après une année à attendre, fébrilement, que l’event arrive en France, c’est chose faite. Et Urban Comics ne faisant pas les choses à moitié, ils ont sorti ce gros “Omnibus” qui regroupe tous les #1 de DC Rebirth. Même si je sais que l’objet divise parmi les fans, moi, ça m’arrangeait, voulant un avant-goût de tout ce qui se fait en ce moment chez DC ; artistiquement et scénaristiquement (ce mot n’existe toujours pas et j’en suis toujours frustré).

A la fin de la lecture, j’ai du mal à cacher ma déception. Pas tant sur l’objet dont je ne regrette pas un seul instant l’achat, mais plus sur ma prise de contact avec l’univers DC. Petite revue du “pourquoi” de cette déception. Ce n’est pas une critique de l’ouvrage pour autant, je laisse ça aux connaisseurs.

1) Déjà, si je sais que la quasi-totalité (disons à 98%) des héros Marvel sont des repompes de DC, y a pas à dire, les originaux ne me plaisent pas, ne me parlent pas. Superman ? Jamais aimé, super-homme ne craignant rien qui porte le slip par-dessus, nan, ça prend pas. Batman (et je rassemble ici toute la clique, de BatGirl à Red Hood en passant par Nightwing) ? Le bougre est le héros d’excellents jeu vidéo et films, pourtant, je n’aime pas le délire mais on verra ça plus bas. Wonder Woman ? C’est l’une des icônes que j’attendais le plus alors on en reparlera plus bas. The Flash ? M’ouais. Si la série de CW avait commencé à me faire aimer le personnage, le récit Rebirth m’a refroidi. Les Titans ? Ca peut aller (mais qu’on vire ce groopie de Green Arrow). Les Teen Titans ? Gros LoL. Green Arrow ? “ENOOOOOOOOOOOORME BLAGUE”. Constantine ? Hasard des choses, j’ai lu son aventure en même temps que je regarde la saison 1 de la série TV. Ce n’est clairement pas mon personnage favori mais je le préfère à Dr.Strange par exemple. Hal Jordan ? “GNEUH GNEUH Je peux créer n’importe quoi mais je choisis des trucs militaires parce que je suis un soldat”. En vrai par contre, j’ai beaucoup aimé le début de son nouvel arc. Ses remplaçants, Jessica Cruz et Simon Baz, ont été la meilleure surprise de l’ouvrage. Pour le reste… Disons que je n’ai pas envie de tirer sur l’ambulance. Aquaman, Lex Luthor en tant que nouveau Superman, Deathstroke, Blue Beetle, Supergirl… puis la Suicide Squad quoi… “Okay on va envoyer une équipe suicide capable du pire comme du meilleure. Donc on va choisir un mec avec un boomerang, une groopie, un excellent tireur d’élite et un gentil colonel.”.

Je m’attarde pas sur mes raisons de pourquoi “Gros Lol” aux Teen Titans ou mon “mi-figue mi-raison” de The Flash, ça serait trop long. Mais voilà mon ressentis par rapport à ces héros DC dont aucun ne me fait rêver. C’est pas un reproche ; juste un constat. Malheureusement pour DC, les personnages et leur rapports sont la première chose que je recherche dans une œuvre de fiction, plus que le scénario.

2) Le scénario d’ailleurs. Je ne vais que parler ici du récit Rebirth, la manière dont il est amené et comment je l’ai perçu en tant que nouveau lecteur, ainsi que celui de Wonder Woman.

J’ai fais l’effort, pour la lecture, d’accepter de ne pas tout comprendre pendant certaines pages (Marvel est très bon pour habituer à cela). Et je n’ai pas été déçu. Alors non, je n’ai pas tout compris. Mais en gros, je comprends bien que la continuité New 52 causé par le FlashPoint a été altéré plus que de raison par une force inconnue, même si l’indice finale donne une bonne idée sur ce qui attend les héros lors de cette quête. Après, les subtilités concernant Wally “The Flash” West m’ont un peu échappé mais quand je vois que certaines remontent à Crisis On Infinite Earth (ou bien est-ce Infinite Crisis ?), je n’insiste pas. Je suis un peu plus dubitatif sur le fait de ramener tout ça à Batman mais c’est un point à part de mon avis. Après, tout n’est pas parfait dans la narration : Wally dit que la Speed Force l’aspire très fort mais tékaté, il a quand même le temps de voir beaucoup de monde avant que cela soit définitif. Par contre, carton rouge à Urban Comics (Une fois n’est pas coutume), d’avoir traduit la continuité “New 52″ en France par “Renaissance”. Je sais que ce choix a beaucoup été critiqué et je comprends maintenant pourquoi. Mais passons.

Maintenant, je suis beaucoup plus dubitatif sur le reste des #1. Pour la grande majorité, je ne comprends pas bien le lien avec le retour de Wally et de ses révélations. Je le comprends même pas pour le plus grand des groupe : la Justice League. Wally West a touché : Batman (pas touché mais c’est tout comme), les Titans et Barry “The Flash” Allen. Mais du reste ? En quoi leur péripétie sont des #1 de ce relaunch quand ça n’a rien à voir avec ce qu’il se passe dans l’intrigue principal ? La Justice League affronte des aliens, la Suicide Squad fait… des trucs, Constantine retrouve ses vieux démons, Batman Beyond je comprends bof le lien aussi, etc.le comble étant que, admettons j’ai envie de continuer à suivre l’histoire de Rebirth dans sa globalité, je ne sais quelle revue prendre le mois prochain en kiosque.

Aparté maintenant sur Wonder Woman. Comme dit, je l’attendais au tournant. Les trailers pour le film me hype, et je me rends compte que Marvel n’a(vait) pas de femme dans sa sainte trinité (ne me parlez pas de Black Widow, please). Même si c’est corrigé depuis avec Captain Marvel ou Thor, selon le goût de chacun, DC fait ça depuis belle lurette. Et bah je suis… toujours pas décidé. Son récit porte sur la dualité entre son origine classique et celle de la New 52. A noter que je ne vois globalement pas trop le lien avec Rebirth mais passons. D’un côté je suis déçu car je ne vois pas le lien avec ce récit Rebirth que j’ai beaucoup aimé et de l’autre, j’ai aimé cette dualité et quête de vérité que s’apprête à vivre Wonder Woman. A suivre.

3) Sphère détesté chez Marvel, dont l’étendard est porté par les populaires Gardiens de la Galaxie, c’est quelque chose qui m’intéresse beaucoup chez DC : le côté galactique, dont l’étendard est ici porté, sauf erreur de ma part, par le Green Lantern Corps. 2 choses à traiter ici ; Hal Jordan et son histoire avec Sinestro, et les héritiers, Simon Baz et Jessica Cruz. Côté Hal Jordan, même si je n’aime toujours pas le héros, j’ai beaucoup aimé son histoire actuelle et les enjeux que porte sa lutte avec Sinestro. C’est juste dommage que le passé ne soit pas totalement bien expliqué dans ce #1 parce qu’il s’est apparemment passé BEAUCOUP de choses. Simon Baz et Jessica Cruz ; je n’ai pas au courant qu’Hal Jordan s’était trouvé des remplaçants (bon je n’étais au courant de rien, je me gardais la surprise pour Rebirth justement). Même si j’ai pas tout compris sur comment il peut y avoir 2 Green Lantern pour le secteur 2814 (j’ai tenté sans regarder : à un chiffre près, j’étais bon), les deux personnages sont intéressants et leur duo fonctionne bien. De plus, ils semblent être en charge des quêtes annexes des affaires d’Hal Joran et c’est un tout qui me plaît beaucoup.

4)Batman et sa clique… Je comprends, vite fait, le charisme de l’Homme Chauve-Souris. Mais comment il peut faire autant d’émules, ça, je ne comprends pas, ça, ça m’échappe.”Mais c’est justement ce qui le rend humain donc on s’identifie à lui blablablabla.”. Soit, je m’en moque, j’ai arrêté de mener ce combat depuis bien longtemps. Par contre, cet “Omnibus” Rebirth me confirme quelque chose qui m’agace beaucoup chez la DC : l’omniprésence de Batman. Que ça soit par lui-même (le mec passe d’un sourire joyeux à une profonde dépression), les espoirs que les autres lui portent (pourquoi Wally West est d’abord allé voir lui plutôt que Barry Allen ?), par sa Batcave qui ne veut plus rien dire (un dinosaure, un sablier, une carte, une penderie de costume ? Vraiment ?) ou ses acolytes passablement énervants (Nightwing, inutile, le Robin des Teen Titans qui a une tête à claque et Batgirl qui fait un peu trop frivole pour son rôle) : beaucoup de choses m’énervent chez la Batfamily. Reste Red Hood, intéressant quand il dit qu’il fait ce que Batman ne peut pas faire. Non puis emmener Batman sur un champ de bataille avec des aliens ; ça rime à quoi ? Le mec il balance des batarang puis quoi ?

Mon autre reproche majeur, mais je l’avais vu venir, est l’absence de Batwoman. C’est elle qui m’a fait mettre un pied dans l’univers DC après la saga de jeu vidéo Batman Arkham. C’est selon moi le personnage le plus intéressant de la Batfamily, et l’un des meilleurs de ce que je connais de DC. Je ne demande pas à ce qu’elle ait sa série dans ce relaunch, mais un signe, quelque chose pour nous faire comprendre que, ça n’aurait pas été de refus, surtout au lieu de perdre son temps avec Duke Thomas.

5) En vrac, remarquons que j’apprécie le fait que Superman ne soit plus aussi omniprésent. Avec Batman, ils formaient un tandem qui faisait trop d’ombre aux héros DC et qui me repoussaient. Même si Lex Luthor reprend le pseudonyme et qu’un autre Super-man est dans l’ombre, j’apprécie le fait que tout cela soit en retrait.

The Flash, son histoire ne m’intéresse que moyennement car j’ai l’impression que ça va encore tourner au meurtre de sa mère. J’espère me tromper, je m’y connais pas assez pour avoir un jugement définitif.

Putain habillez Supergirl ; vous l’avez déjà fait, refaites-le. J’avais une super image retraçant toutes les tenues de Supergirl depuis sa création, c’était édifiant. Je la mets dès que je la retrouve. 

Deathstroke en super-agent façon Venom Snake ; oui, bof, bien essayé mais ça m’a pas convaincu sur ce seul numéro.

J’aurais préféré ne jamais connaître “Blue Beetle”.

Pourquoi les Titans et Teen Titans ont chacun une espèce de meuf façon Scarlet Witch trop classe mais qui traînent avec des rigolos comme eux ?

Tout comme Batwoman, j’aurais aimé un signe de Zatana mais peut être est-elle morte à ce moment-là de l’histoire.

Pour faire une bonne histoire avec de la cybernétique, il ne suffit pas de balancer des mots technologiques au hasard. Reçu, Cyborg (et surtout les auteurs) ?

En conclusion, un mot rapide sur les graphismes. Là aussi je suis un peu déçu. Globalement, c’est beau, mais on m’avait vendu DC comme supérieur à Marvel à ce niveau. Hors, il n’en est rien. La majorité des pages sont de bonnes factures sans non plus être belles. Tout comme Marvel, il y a des pages qui m’ont fait hurler de rire tellement que c’était ridicule ; je retiens la plus part des apparitions de Wally West en The Flash (un roux en larme dans un costume que j’associe à un gamin, forcément, ça fait tâche) et l’illustration finale de la Justice League (un monstre de kitsch que même Marvel n’a jamais osé alors qu’ils ont Captain America quand même) où ils sont tous en mode “on est les héros de la Terre blablabla”. Puis globalement, et je rejoins mon premier point donc la boucle est bouclée, les héros ont un style désuet : Batman, Superman (que ça soit Lex Luthor ou Kent), Aquaman, Blue Bettle, un peu Wonder Woman. Dès lors, c’est dur de me plaire.

Je ne ferme pas complètement la porte à DC : je veux connaître la suite de Rebirth et je pense à suivre Green Lantern Corps et/ou Wonder Woman pendant un temps. Mais clairement, là où j’ai suivis Marvel pendant près de 2 ans, je pense que DC ne tiendra pas autant sur la longueur. Quelque part tant mieux : y a toujours Spawn et Witchblade qui m'attendent.
