The most recent episode of Interview with a Vampire let's us see Lestat's side of the story and see how it compares to Louis' accounting of their relationship. As a result, it reaffirms just how unreliable of a narrator Louis is, but it also further illuminates elements of his character that the director and writers have been playing with since the beginning of the show.
There's this part in the episode where Lestat turns to Louis and apologizes and it's framed with Lestat turned to Louis on one side and Claudia on his other side. They're the angel and devil on Louis' shoulders, but who is the angel and who is the devil? And as my friend said, Armand and Daniel are placed into that same dynamic with Louis later on. We are being asked to decide who to trust, who's telling the truth, who's the good guy, but the fact of unreliability robs us of that decision.
This whole story is about Louis, he's the protagonist, though not the narrator, and he is constantly being pulled in two directions, no matter when or where he is in his story. He's a mind split in two, divided by nature and circumstance. He's vampire and human, owner and owned, father and child, angel and devil. He's both telling the story and being told the story. His history is a story he tells himself, and as we've seen, sometimes that story is not whole.
Louis is the angel who saved Claudia from the fire but he's also the devil who sentenced her to an life of endless torment, the adult trapped in the body of a child. He's the angel who rescued Lestat from his grief and also the devil who abandoned him, who couldn't love him, could only kill and leave him.
He's pulled in two directions, internally and externally at all times and so it's no wonder that he feels the need to confess, first to the priest, then Daniel, and then Daniel again.
He's desperate to be heard, a Black man with power in Jim Crow America who's controlled by his position as someone with a seat at the table but one who will never be considered equal. He doesn't belong to the Black community or the white community, he can't. He acts as a go-between, a bridge, one who is pushed and pulled until he can't take it anymore. He's a fledgling child to an undead father, he's a young queer man discovering his sexual identity with an infinitely experienced partner. He's confessing because he wants to be absolved, that human part of him that was raised Catholic, that child who believed, he wants to be saved. He wants to be seen.
Louis wants to attain a forever life that is morally pure, but he can't. He's been soiled by sin, by "the devil," as he calls Lestat, and he can never be clean again. Deep down, I think he knows this, but he can't stop trying to repent. He tries to self-flagellate by staying with Lestat and then tries to repent by killing him, but can't actually follow through. He follows Claudia to Europe to try and assuage his guilt. He sets himself on fire, attempts to burn himself at the stake, to purify his body, rid himself of the dark gift.
Louis is a man endlessly trying to account for the pain he has caused and he ultimately fails, over and over again, because he can't get rid of what he is. A monster. He's an endlessly hungry monster. He's hungry for love, for respect, for power, for forgiveness, for death. He's a hole that can never be filled. He can never truly acquire any of those things because he will always be punishing himself for wanting and needing them in the first place. He will never truly believe he deserves them and as a result, can't accept them if they are ever offered. He can never be absolved for he has damned himself by accepting the dark gift and thus has tainted himself past the point of saving.

ok i haven't made a person post in 5000 years but im losing my mind thinking about this and i can't contain it and i haven't seen anyone else talking about it
in the most recent episode when Armand and Louis are talking in Louis's apartment and Louis gets frustrated about only being able to make fire when he's angry, Armand tells him "I try and find the vulnerability within the object" and like that's just it, isn't it? that's his whole fucking character right there in one kind of throw away line.
And if you take that and apply it to his observation from earlier in the season, "that boy we met in San Francisco, he's still in there and we can find him" like!!!!! it's the same fucking picture your honor
All Armand does is look for the vulnerability and exploit it. He's had the thoughts of changing the coven but he could never say them himself so he lets Lestat come in and do it. "You brought him there so he could destroy it." Armand never gets his hands dirty, he just finds the vulnerability and exploits it by letting something else do the dirty work for him whether it be Lestat or Louis or fire. When the coven goes on the hunt he finds this party full of wealthy people living in luxury while the majority of the country is in post war poverty and he uses that to justify them being killed but also exploits the sentiments of the coven, knowing they'll do the work for him. He doesn't even go inside, barely even glances as they destroy the place.
But ALSO in this scene, he and Louis smoke their cigarettes outside and they both use lighters to light them. Armand isn't showing his full hand yet, he's drawn to Louis but doesn't fully trust him. He doesn't show him that until later, when he's more sure Louis feels the same about him. I think there's another scene then when Louis uses a lighter but Armand doesn't.
Then later we see that scene with Louis struggling with the candle and he says the thing about only being able to do it when he's angry, and then we only see him do it when he's angry. There he's angry because Lestat is invading again, but also angry that he's still being pressured about the coven. When he sets his pictures on fire he's angry about the rejection from the art dealer and then angry at Claudia.
Then there's the final scene on the bench in the rain. He's just allowed Lestat to disappear as Armand approaches, after telling Lestat he's going to break things off with Armand. Maybe it's a lie just for Lestat but I think there's at least some truth to it, some part of him that's going to, but then Armand starts confiding in him, and he realizes he has him completely.
"I used to be real good at running things" followed immediately by "I'm a little wet" he doesn't even ask Armand to put up the umbrella Armand just does it because he told Louis about his past and now Louis has found his vulnerable point and knows how to use it. So then he hands Armand a cigarette and Armand tells him he wants him and Louis calls him Arun and Armans calls him Maitre. He knows it's over now, he's not angry he's in complete and total control so he lights Armand's cigarette first and then his own, and then throws his lighter away.
THAT is the moment so far, to me, where Louis comes into his own as a vampire. Here's this 500 year old master manipulator and Louis has him wrapped around his finger. Find the vulnerability within the fucking object. God.

I am seeing so many people saying that the cast of IWTV needs an award after episode 7 of season 2. It comes on at 9 tonight and if it's that good, I might end up going to the craft store and putting something together, because the acting has ben stellar so far, so if it gets better, then wow.

Tell us what’s in Elijah’s closet? What’s his style? How does he dress? Does he mend his clothes on his own? Does he ever leave town to buy new clothes or does he only get what’s available to him? Does he have pieces that are decades old? Does Claudia bring him clothes when she comes over?
@nezumivc103221
So, Elijah’s “style” is somewhat eclectic, he doesn’t really have a defined look. A lot of his clothes are what you might call workwear — they are comfortable, functional, everyday things that he wears around his home.
Tumblr media
A lot of it is to deal with battling the elements around the coast; naturally some of it has a bit of marine flair due to his profession. Think about corduroy, thick wool knitwear, rough jeans, work boots or wellingtons, a waxed windbreaker. Nothing really slim-fitted, as he needs to move around.
His way of dressing is also kind of old-fashioned, but it’s not out of place considering his appearance, and for the small fishing village he lives in. He’s not oblivious either, he notes what other people wear, whether in person, on the TV, etc, and he uses that as a general guide as well to keep track of what is truly out of fashion — just as most people do without thinking.
Tumblr media
If he is leaving the lighthouse, he will put a little more effort in, try to make himself look smart. He’ll wear a simple shirt under a jumper or cardigan, switch out his boots for nicer shoes, and so on.
He’s also influenced by the clothes he liked to wear in the past, and yes, many of his clothes are old, especially things like coats, but he takes as good care of them as he can. He doesn’t repair them himself, but there is a seamstress down in the village whom he will visit. Usually she’s dealing with baby clothes or bridesmaid dresses, so she enjoys it when he comes by with some odd request.
Eli doesn’t buy clothes often at all — and in fact, the process and idea of going out for that purpose slightly intimidates him. These days most of his clothes are thrifted from such tiny little charity shops that don’t even have a changing room to try them on. Honestly, he kind of prefers it that way. Because of this, his clothes remain outdated, sometimes he looks a bit like he fell out of the 80s or 90s.
Claudia occasionally brings Eli clothing from her travels, but it’s not a habit. She likes the Italian style. They are often finely made, and she will say that they suit him, but he honestly feels uncomfortable in them. She will ask him to try them on to show her, and usually he will find little reason not to oblige, simply because they were a gift. Still, more often than not they will stay hidden in some drawer somewhere gathering mothballs. Out of sight, out of mind.

An in-progress pic of another craft project. This one’s been sitting on the side for ages— dolls for the family D&D campaign I’m DMing. There’s one more not pictured, as I’m waiting for that uncle to get back to me about what sort of clothes he wants his character to be wearing. . .
