"A season that brought the best out of the best" Motorsport Magazine, February 2025 Issue, by Mark Hughes
We've seen plenty of demonstrations of Max Verstappen brilliance on his way to a fourth straight title this season. But has he become a yet-greater driver in '24? Yes. But not because of what he's done in the car; that's always been remarkable. Rather, in a challenging combination of circumstances where it would have been very easy for the whole team to have come undone, he has been the glue. He couldn't have been that if his power was not underwritten by the enormity of his talent. It was on display this season just as always – the virtuosity of dancing through the Interlagos rain, the steely focus of keeping a closely chasing McLaren from getting within DRS reach for 30 laps in Qatar, the technical perfection of Suzuka, the defensive masterclass of Imola, etc. But the circumstances he found himself in this season brought out a leader. At 27 years old he's no longer only the dazzling hurricane of speed and ambition. No longer only someone so driven, drilled and practiced that he’s virtually unbeatable in an equal car. No longer only someone of which his friend and Formula 1 driver coach Atze Kerkhof says is as good as he is, "because of a brilliant natural talent and millions of hours of training. He’s only got better. The rough edges have gone and now he’s like a machine. You cannot beat him." No, Max Verstappen is more even than all that now. A driver in their tenth F1 season doesn't get faster. They can possibly access their best stuff more consistently. But he's been doing that almost perfectly for seven seasons now, a remarkable achievement in itself. So where has he got better? Circumstances have demanded an extra dimension from him – and he's delivered it. But in a way which has not buried him, which still allows him his easy delineation between racing and home, keeping his mind perfectly uncluttered to focus on performance.
He prepared like never before for the new season, as team boss Christian Horner revealed at Suzuka in April. "He changed trainer over the winter. He's fit and lean. You can hear how much spare capacity he has in the car. He wants to know not just who's behind him, but who is behind them as well and what times are they doing. He's become very astute at managing the tyre. The way he managed to extend the tyre life here [at the Japanese Grand Prix] was so impressive."
But that's just a detail, a polishing-up. The leadership dimension came from the circumstances of Red Bull's season. Specifically the strains arising from the controversy surrounding the Horner internal investigation in the early season. Then the car's mid-season competitive decline.
The serenity in the cockpit at the start of 2024, as Verstappen continued from where he'd left off in his dominant '23 campaign, was very much in contrast to how things were in the team as the Horner controversy about the employee complaint against him played out and Max's father Jos got involved, opposing the team boss, campaigning for him to be ousted.
The way Max dealt with the powerplay, which also involved Helmut Marko, the man who had almost single-handedly brought him to F1, was illuminating. He did not align himself with Jos, stayed on good terms with him but went his own way. He did state his unambiguously firm support of Marko – "If he goes, then so do I" – so sending an implicit message to Horner not to overplay his hand.
But then he helped bring calm equilibrium back, just continued with the competitive imperative and remained civilised with everyone, Horner included.
"What I know is that this team doesn’t give up," said Verstappen after clinching the title in Las Vegas. "There are a lot of very confident people and I really enjoy working with them. I know there was a lot of pressure on them. When you come out of a season like last year where we broke every record and then start to struggle to understand what is going wrong, it's important to remain calm as you try to fix it. Every person in the team has their own emotions which you have to deal with. It's also people-management – because everyone acts in different ways to good results or bad results. But that's something I enjoy as well. Because we all have our own character but we all have to work together to the same end goal and I'm proud of how we stuck together through those races where we were a bit lost."
As Jos was saying that Horner remaining would tear the team apart, Max was ensuring that it wouldn't. Probably this didn't come as much of a surprise to his mother, Sophie Kumpen, the former top-class karter who provided much of his genetic make-up. "Max will always want to solve things first by talking," she explained in a Dutch TV interview. "He is a sensitive person. He gets the fierce racing side from Jos. The gentle side from me. But make no mistake, eh. Under the helmet he is a tiger."
Given Max's childhood and the tempestuous marriage surrounding his early home life before his parents split, it's not much of a stretch to imagine where that diplomatic impulse might come from. It's something so at odds with his racing image, someone who is so uncompromising in his desire to win, he's even prepared to cross the line. As he phrased it in one of his own documentaries, "Sometimes you even have to be a dick to win."
The combination of that sociable, easy-going, even tempered guy outside the car (the Sophie side) and the uncompromising competitive monster in it (the Jos side) is a big part of his strength. But specifically, it has been front and centre in how brilliantly well he kept everything so cohesive in the '24 campaign when it had many ingredients which could have decimated it.
Further fallout from the early season controversy came as Adrian Newey announced his departure from the team, just prior to Miami in May. Max admitted it was a blow, but still he stayed focused. Because there was much to focus on – this was not going to be the breeze the early races had suggested it was going to be. There was a nagging trait in the car, one which had started to become apparent in last year's towards the end of the season: as they applied more aero load to it, so it was becoming more imbalanced. The front end wasn’t keeping up and it was becoming ever trickier to get the car into its sweet-spot window with set-up.
When McLaren made its breakthrough update in Miami, Red Bull's limitation was exposed. It was no longer superior, merely competitive. Then, as McLaren further developed its aero elasticity to give it a great front end at low speeds without compromising its balance at higher speeds, it began pulling clear of Red Bull. The middle part of Verstappen’s season – Silverstone to Monza – was all about wrestling with the competitive consequences of that as Mercedes surged into form too.
It was at this point that Verstappen began visiting the factory at every possible opportunity, maximising his simulator time, working with the engineers in trying to find a solution to the car's limitations. "His workload has been phenomenal this year," says an admiring Horner. But without surprise, for as he’s also said in the past, "The more pressure you put on, the better he delivers… his mental resilience is the strongest I've ever seen."
Only at Hungary did the strain that the competitive struggle was putting on the relationship become apparent. There, he was having an untypically scrappy race trying to overcome the car’s limitations on a day when both McLaren and Mercedes were faster. His race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase (aka ‘GP’) is a tough but calm character, gives as good as he gets and in that sense is perfect for Max. There’d already been a terse exchange between them about Max giving a place back to Lando Norris after having passed off-track. When GP admonished him for not bringing in his new tyres sympathetically, it triggered the sullen kid who hates to be beaten and he responded with (the more-severe expletives removed), “No mate, don’t give me that bullshit now. You guys gave me this strategy, OK? I’m trying to rescue what’s left.” The strategy was perfectly good for the limitations of the car and was predicated on having newer tyres in the last stint, even though that involved getting undercut initially.
It was the low-point of his season – the breaking point after he’d carried the load for so long. It’s where the competitive fierceness conflicted with the leadership role, and it took a sit-down with Horner and Lambiase before the following race to realign that. They were in the car with him, they emphasised. He wasn’t alone, even if it feels like that in the cockpit sometimes. They felt his pain. He took it on board, as always completely straightforward in his communication. He likes to feel he can call the team out when it’s not delivering just as they can call him out when he’s wrong. This was one of the latter times. But there’s never any lingering resentment. “He’s emotional,” says Horner. “Partly that’s where the performance comes from. He’s incredibly strong-willed. He’s a thoroughbred and can be very sharp when emotions are running high. He doesn’t hold back.”
As that sit-down coincided with Monza, with the car at its absolute nadir, we were witnessing how close the whole thing was to falling down. Had the relationship not been repaired and the car’s shortfalls continued not to be understood, it’s easy to imagine a scenario where the partnership broke down irretrievably. But actually not only did they rally around Max and give him the reassurance he needed to get out of that negative place the Budapest weekend took him to, but Monza then shone a big light on the cause of the car’s woes. Which they could set about addressing. Together, they emerged from the crisis.
As they did that, we saw a classic bit of Verstappen hard-headedness in Austin and particularly Mexico against his title challenger Norris. The niggle between them had started in Austria back in June, when they’d punctured each other’s tyres as Verstappen fended off Norris’s attacks in a way which stretched the sporting regulations. It was like that again in Austin and Mexico and in the latter event his move at Turn 7, with no attempt to make the corner so as to ensure Norris went behind once more, was outrageous. It brought to mind his quote about what you had to be sometimes. That’s where he draws his lines; it’s about prevailing and about how extreme he’s willing to be. No one is ever going to pass him around the outside, he says. Something that was drilled into him as a kid in karting by Jos.
If there is turbulence in the aftermath he’ll not acknowledge it. In fact he seemed mystified about why Norris was so upset afterwards in Austria, that delineation for him between on-track and off rarely so well illustrated. Criticism for the incidents by the media did seem to sting him, though. “He’s more sensitive than you think,” Horner says. “Inevitably he’s aware of the criticism and some of it, I think, is very unfounded. He’s a driver that drives aggressively; he’s an attacking driver. But so was Senna, so was Schumacher, so was Hamilton, and they all came under the same kind of spotlight at various times in their careers.”
It was the criticism he received after his incidents with Norris in Austin and Mexico which particularly bugged him. He perceived them as attacks from countrymen of Norris rather than as attacks against professional fouls. He knows he’s the best out there and if there’s some nudging over the specified lines of regulation on track involved in overcoming the competitive limitations of the car, then he probably feels justified. That, for some, puts him in the same bracket as Michael Schumacher as someone whose achievements have an asterisk against them. But he’s not racing for their approval.
He’s not even racing for achievements. As he says about more titles, “I’m already very proud to win four. Winning one or seven is the same thing. You’re just repeating. It’s nice to repeat but it means the same thing. The first one is what you are chasing, is the whole reason you are there. You’ve done it. After that, it’s just nice and doesn’t really mean as much. What’s been beautiful is that each of the four titles have had different emotions. This one has been the best as we’ve not had the fastest car. But the first one will always mean the most.”
That indifference to the statistics of achievement means he won’t be trapped into chasing numbers that only mean anything to outsiders. But there’ll be a conflict between his love of racing and his stated yearning not to be racing long before he reaches 40 (which is what Lewis Hamilton used to say too!). That conflict will surely play a crucial part in what he decides to do with the rest of his life. He’s never known any other life, of course, as the boy brought up in the circus.
As a driver he’s one of the all-time greats, a more formidable all-rounder even than Fernando Alonso, faster, more extreme. But similar. Alonso is the nearest driver in overall traits. But even the great Alonso bows down to the level Max has attained. The number of times Max has not maximised his car since joining Red Bull in 2016 can be counted on the fingers of one hand. Is he the outright fastest over a lap? Often he is, yes. But this is a misunderstood concept. A driver can only get to the ceiling of his ability if the car’s traits, the way it is balanced, allow him to. There are many reasons why it won’t be, especially in this era of thermally sensitive tyres.
But let’s assume every driver on the grid was magically given a fully competitive car, each perfectly balanced to match the outer edge of their specific style, in how each driver was wired up physiologically. Would Max be the fastest in qualifying? Possibly not. If it wasn’t him, you’d be looking for Charles Leclerc, possibly Lewis Hamilton at the height of his powers. But in the grind of a race and the even grittier grind of a season, would Verstappen in those circumstances prevail? Almost certainly he would, yes.
There’s no weakness. Schumacher had weaknesses, Senna too. Alain Prost was as rounded as Max but not as quick. Before then, we are heavily into the dangerous era – the years which killed Gilles Villeneuve or Jochen Rindt or Jim Clark and mortally wounded Stirling Moss, drivers who, like Senna, could conjure things that left their contemporaries shaking their heads in wonder. None of the current stars, Max included, quite have that. But Max can maximise every situation with unerring consistency like Fangio, like Clark, like Stewart. And if the peaks of his raw speed are not quite as miraculous as some of the past, he runs close to that almost all of the time, probably more than anyone before.
He’ll be missed when he’s gone, when the rewards no longer offset the energy draining irritations.

Phew... I'm pretty much done with college now. I'm excited to start my teacher training! Hopefully I can be a great role model and make every student feel welcome in my science classes. If I can even encourage a few students with open minds and diverse thoughts to get into STEM, maybe the future of the US and the world won't be so bleak. Looks like I've got an email from the high school I'm set to teach in, and they wanna have a meeting with me soon... something about the school's values?
You arrive at the principal's office a few minutes early, your polo shirt neatly tucked into your khakis. You have to look good for your first day after all, especially when you have a meeting with the head honcho himself. Your shirt is a little big on you, but you don't exactly have much muscle. You were too busy studying nerdy subjects like chemistry, calculus, and physics to make it to the gym or do any sort of sports. Not that it was your scene anyway. You give two quick knocks on the door.
"Enter," his deep booming voice calls out from within.
You quickly enter the room, sitting down in the chair across the desk from Principal Reece. With his muscles bulging out of his dress shirt and commanding presence, he's exactly the type of man you'd never be in a million years. You remember him saying in the interview this is his first school year here too, and he has a vision for how his school should be run.
"I know we discussed a bit about your teaching philosophy in your interview, but I just wanted to make sure we're on the same page about a few things. This school has a certain atmosphere we'd like to keep.
You hesitantly nod and give a verbal approval. You really need this job, and surely it can't be that bad, right?
"First, I want to reiterate that this is a private Christian school. That means everything we teach is through the lens of the Bible. I'm sure that's okay with you."
At first you're confused. You swore this was a public school when you applied. But the more you thought about it, the less sense that made. Why would you want to teach anywhere you couldn't spread the word of God? Your religion is extremely important to you. Your parents enrolled you in private school as soon as you were old enough for school and you thank them every day for it now. You think everyone should have the opportunity to go to a school like this one.
Principal Reece barely acknowledges your reply before continuing. "We also want all of our teachers to coach a sport or lead an after school club. Looking back at my notes from your interview, it looks like you want to coach football?"
You remember them mentioning that in your interview, but you swore you had put down D&D club. But why would you have said that? You weren't some type of nerd! Sure you have a bachelor's degree in science, but you're a jock through and through. You were the quarterback all throughout high school and college, leading your team to countless victories. All that gym training stuck with you and you've continued to go every morning. The muscles bulging out of your polo show what hard work can do to a man. You couldn't wait to share your passion with the next generation.
"We also have a strict dress code for faculty. Good to see you got that email."
You take a look down at your outfit, confirming you meet the standards. A crisp white dress shirt, sleeves rolled up to show off your arms. A red striped tie around your neck, going down to your belt buckle as is standard. Dark blue dress pants and brown dress shoes complete the look. It feels good to dress formally. You wanted to talk with Principal Reece about implementing a similar dress code for the students as well.
"Most importantly, this school teaches conservative values. We have no desire to cave to the woke mob and indoctrinate children and demand our instructors feel the same way."
You earnestly agree. That's why you decided to teach history. America is the greatest country ever created and the kids deserve to know that! Too much of science has been taken over by liberal propaganda anyway. Those snowflakes say to "trust the science" but you know better than that. You have a no nonsense policy for that woke crap in your classroom. You run your classroom like a tight ship. It's either the Right way or the wrong way, and you don't have patience for the wrong way.
Principal Reece gives you a smile that seems more like a smirk, but you're probably just imagining things. Great to see we're on the same page. I'll let you go to your classroom now. I have a few more one on one meetings before classes start.
You head off to your classroom and sit at your desk, going over your lesson plans for the day. After the Pledge of Allegiance (which you'll proudly lead the class in reciting), attendance, the syllabus you're going to start off the year with the Revolutionary War. You hear the first bell ring and hear the students starting to shuffle in.
It's the start of another school year, and you have work to do.

sharp skates and flimsy dates: prologue.
In which James Wilson becomes a figure skater.
Tumblr media
James Wilson discovered his passion for ice skating when one of his ex-wives took him to a temporary skating rink during the holiday season. Growing up Jewish, there had been no reason for him to indulge in Christian traditions or the cozy markets that came with it. He could appreciate the winter traditions that came with German Christmas markets like hot chocolate stands and glasses of eggnog served to keep the visitors warm, but that was about all he'd indulged in before Bonnie made him go on a festive winter date. He'd be lying if he said he didn't enjoy the Christmas shoppers and saying he didn't fall in love with ice skating the second Bonnie forced him onto a rink would be perjurious. Even after Wilson fumbled the bag with her, he continued to visit Christmas markets for the skating rinks and eventually moved onto a permanent rink, driving out to Trenton once a week and engaging in the off-ice training his coach suggested almost daily. It really wasn't meant to become such a big part of his life - when he first paid to enter the indoor skating rink he knows by heart now, he was just hoping to forget about his patients and watch some kids fall on their asses. Sure, there were plenty of children crying to their caregivers about the cold ice and their sore hands, but Wilson's attention kept drifting back to the pair of figure skaters practicing a graceful routine like it meant nothing to them. They looked gracious and romantic and like they could kiss each other any second now but wouldn't, instead dancing away from each other before leaping together again. The man holding his partner up like she weighed less than any average toddler took notice of his staring and must've thought he was after his girlfriend because they took off not long after and looked at him like he was a creep. It stunned Wilson, making him laugh all by himself and maybe he actually did look more like a deranged man than a successful oncologist at that moment but then again, he couldn't really get himself to care. Instead, he replayed the pair's routine in his head, probably looking like a fool as he retraced their steps. The routine looked a little less simple as he tried to copy it, looking like a stiff block of ice on ice. He went about it with a determined look on his face, only threatening to fall twice which, if you looked at the kids he was avoiding as he danced, was an accomplishment. By the time he was finished and somewhat satisfied with the outcome of his blatant copying, his legs were aching and he was too tired to even make his attempt at cooking dinner. He checked out the healthy fast food place just five minutes away from the skating rink, figuring a little more health couldn't do any harm - he was already forty-one and couldn't deny the way his body was changing. He ordered a breakfast bowl without even looking at the ingredients, the irony of buying a breakfast-centered item on a random Wednesday evening not being lost on him. And so the weekly tradition of skating for hours on end and purchasing a fucking breakfast bowl at 8 p.m. started for Wilson.
Thursday, the day after first trying out the new rink, he was a sore mess. His muscles ached and he could already hear House poking fun at it, telling him he walked just like him now, which is why Wilson made it his goal to avoid him that day. Obviously, it was futile - it always is. House finds him at the worst moments and he's supposed to believe it isn't on purpose? There's no way the man doesn't know what he's up to whenever he practically breaks into the office Wilson works at. He was having a one-sided conversation about some new patient whose symptoms were basically all in her head and whenever the oncologist tried to chime in with some input, the other doctor simply waved it away. He stood up to fetch some documents about the patients he was seeing later that day, relieved to find it wasn't a busy day. Mentally thanking his past self for that, he returned to see his friend staring. There it was, he's seen it and he was grinning like a fucking idiot. 'What on earth happened to you, Wilson,' House asked, amusement etched on his face. 'Nothing nearly as bad as getting shot by a patient,' he replied, scoffing as he made his way back to the desk. House glared at Wilson and for a second he thought he'd stunned the man when he said: 'Oh come on, that was one time. Won't you let it go? At least I've never looked like I got fatal backshots. Seriously, who did you jump?' Wilson had to stop himself from laughing as he rubbed his temples - House was the mean one, not him. 'Right, how could anyone forget? You just had a near-fatal headshot but sure, you've never looked this bad before.' House didn't look pleased as he motioned for the other man to continue. 'And,' he prompted, looking at Wilson like he was expecting one wild story. 'And nothing,' Wilson said, clearly annoyed. 'I didn't hook up with anyone, it's the middle of the week and I'm far too busy,' he groaned, hoping his friend would take the hint and leave him to deal with the mountain of paperwork that was waiting for him. In classic House fashion, however, he didn't pay any mind to the oncologist's schedule, instead poking fun at him and spitting out theories until he got paged and needed to 'save lives again,' said with an exaggerated eye-roll.
Wilson was sure House wouldn't let it go, but at least he'd managed to get through the day without having to admit he found a new hobby. He might as well tell his friend he'd decided to try out ballet - it'd make him a laughing stock regardless and despite the love he held for House after all these years, he didn't feel like subjecting himself to any more bullying than necessary. He enjoyed the company more than he enjoyed the sarcastic remarks and humiliation that came with being House's friend, and he'd rather not give him any more information to poke fun at. James Wilson had realized he wanted to take ice skating seriously, and Gregory House didn't have to know a thing about it. That's how it was, and that's how it would stay. No amount of guilt or manipulation could change Wilson's mind on this. Six more days, and then he'd get to feel the cold air on his cheeks again as he attempted to do the tricks he'd seen everybody do on TV. He was already looking forward to getting to skate again, even after just having done it for the first time in an actual rink, and he'd be looking forward to skating again every day for the rest of his life.

My dad is a "Porn Addiction Coach". He called himself a counsellor for a while but I guess he found out he can't legally call himself that.
The man has zero training in mental health of any kind. He's a pastor, but he didn't even go to seminary. He has a business degree. That's. It. He hasn't ever even been to an actual, science-based therapist before. Some of the other people he's cited have "degrees" from a Christian "university" that was shut down for fraud for lying and telling their students that they definitely had pending accreditation. These are the people who have spent decades pushing the idea of porn addiction.
Which leaves us with a real catch-22. If porn addiction is fake, he's a vulture making money off of giving people bad and false mental health advice, making them feel like an addict (something that our society treats with a lot of shame) and therefore making the shame-based problem way, way worse. But even if porn addiction is a real thing...he wouldn't be fucking qualified to treat it.
But treating it has never been the point. It's been to reclassify porn away from being a form of artistic expression that has all these pesky protections through stuff like free speech laws, towards it being treated like a narcotic that can be prohibited "for our own good." The people with compulsive behavioural issues have never and will never be the point, which is why the discourse surrounding this topic--even among the left, who know for a damn fact how much of a racist tire fire the war on drugs was and the danger of dehumanizing addicted people--always treats people with "porn addiction" with open disdain.
Honestly that’s a good point that if “porn addiction” is real then why are the “therapists” for it so often so unqualified?
And yeah like, it’s very interesting how “porn addiction treatment” doesn’t resemble harm reduction strategies addictions that are proven to be better than this type of stuff.

Transformative Faith: Certified Christian Coaching for Change and Purpose
Meaning and purpose become more important during rapid change and changing landscapes. Faith is increasingly used to comfort and guide people during uncertainty. A powerful tool for holistic personal and professional development, certified Christian coaching promotes Christian values. Faith exploration, personal growth, life transitions, and faith in action are all part of this transformative experience. Certified Christian coach combines coaching principles with Christian beliefs to offer a unique and powerful path to spiritual and personal fulfilment in tough times.
The Faith Foundation:
The first and most important step in Christian coaching is to have faith. Devout Christian coaches can draw inspiration from various passages in the Bible to help them stay motivated. This foundation impacts both the manner in which they handle client interactions and the coaching style they employ. Coaching founded on religious beliefs emphasizes the importance of values, integrity, and a profound connection to a higher purpose.
A Christian coach exemplifies love, compassion, and service to their family and community. It will be possible to establish a relationship of spiritual coaching once this foundation has been established. The fact that these coaches are oriented towards Christ enables them to provide services that are not only holistic but also transformative.

Biscuits with the Bisexuals (plus Trent)
Day five of the Advent calendar! Using this list. Day 5: Holiday Baking. Fandom: Ted Lasso - Pairing: TedTrent & RoyJamie .7k[Ao3]
“It’s real nice for you to let us use your kitchen, Roy.”
Jamie heard Roy grunt as he led their guests into the kitchen. Ted Lasso’s smiling face appeared through the entryway, his wide American eyes staring unashamedly around Roy’s house. Trent Crimm followed with only fractionally less obvious curiosity.
“He’s letting you use his kitchen, darling,” Trent told Ted, pulling himself onto a barstool at the island. “I’m here to look pretty and heckle.”
“Oh, mint, me too!” Jamie said, hopping up next to him. “I usually sit on the counter, though.”
“Keep your arse off my counters,” Roy glared but Jamie just grinned back, sunnily. He huffed a breath, hiding his own smile (but Jamie still saw it. He always saw it.) before turning back to Ted. “And I’m not letting you use my kitchen, I’m putting you to work.”
Ted nodded, affably. “Well point the way and I’ll make like Riri, Roy-Roy.”
“No,” Roy said.
Jamie rolled his eyes, turning to Trent. “He’s just grumpy because he was left out of his family text thread on who was bringing what to the family biscuit exchange.”
“Biscuits aren’t even a Hanukkah tradition!” Roy shouted. “Fucking Christians, ruining everything.”
“He has to blame the Christians because it was Phoebe’s idea but he can’t ever blame Phoebe for anything.”
“The Christians got to her! She’s an impressionable child! Not her fault.”
Jamie gestured at Roy as if to say ‘see?’. Trent snorted.
“Well if you don’t wanna do cookies why are you so steamed you weren’t in the group chat?”
Roy grunted, turning away from them to bring out the stand mixer.
“He’s mad because it was only women in the group chat.” Jamie told them. “HIs sister Ruth was the one who told him about it, all confused because she doesn’t cook or nothing. Roy then made a big stink about gender essentialism and how he should have been given the option to contribute, even if he thinks a biscuit exchange is dumb.”
“It is dumb,” Roy grumbled, pulling our various measuring bowls.
“I know, babe,” Jamie told him, giving him a sympathetic put he couldn’t see. Trent snickered into his hand.
“Well, hey, Roy, that’s great! Standing up for gender equality.” Ted said, grinning. “You’re like that tall fella from High School Musical who wants to bake and play basketball. You won’t stick to this status quo.”
Jamie snorted. “Except Roy can’t bake. He’s dead good at cooking and that but he can’t make a biscuit for love or honey.”
“It’s love or money you twat.”
“Oi, is that any way to speak to your honey?”
Roy growled. Jamie winked at him.
“Well, Roy, I am happy to lend my expertise,” Ted chimed in. “Might be fun to coach on you something I actually know something about. Switch it up.”
Roy snorted but his mouth tilted into an almost smile which cheered everyone up.
Jamie leaned over the island. “Get us some tea, Roy?”
“Get it yourself,” Roy said but started the kettle himself anyway.
“So what are you baking biscuits for, Coach?” Jamie asked, crossing his arms on the counter.
“Well, Rebecca has praised me a bit too much in front of the rest of Nelson Road “ Ted winced. “So I’m making a super batch so everyone can get some. Little too much for my tiny kitchen.”
Jamie hummed. “Roy, can I try some of Coach’s biscuits?”
“No.”
Jamie whined. “Just one! While he’s here! If everyone’s gonna be talking about how lush they are, I wanna know how lush they are. Even if I can’t have more than one.”
“We can make him do squats to work it off,” Trent reasoned.
Roy snorted. “You know nothing about nutrition or fitness plans for athletes, Crimm. He’d do cardio, not muscle training.”
“Jumping jacks, then.” Trent shrugged. “I’m not picky.”
“You’re a freak, Crimm,” Roy told him, but he didn’t sound unhappy about it.
Ted and Jamie laughed.
“Well let’s get bakin’, Clay Aiken!’
“Perfect appropriate queer reference, Ted,”
“Thanks, sweetheart,”
“You’re insufferable.” Roy told them.
“So are we, though!” Jamie responded cheerfully.
“Do you think the oven’s preheated enough for me to put my head in?” Roy asked.
“Are you a biscuit?” Trent asked.
“More of a tart,” Jamie responded.
“No, Jamie, you’re the Tartt.”
“This was a mistake.” Roy said.
They made 12 dozen biscuits.

The formation of Team Star Breaker and how it might tie in with Chris's backstory.
We all know that the members of Team Star Breaker were selected by Dr. Ziggurat due to their compatibility with the arrangement system. What is interesting is that the team wasn’t fully formed when Ziggurat recruited Zeo around the time the qualifiers for the Japanese team were ending. The doctor was already the manager or coach of the team, and it already had a name at the time.
As a result, we could simply assume that Ziggurat had the authority to choose whoever he saw fit to be part of the team. And according to Ryo in episode 94, that’s essentially what happened.
However, Metal Fury seems to deliver new informations. Chris's backstory reveals that he once participated in what seems to be a tournament for qualification in the U.S. team. While it’s not 100% certain, Chris is a common diminutive for Christian or Christopher, which are common Western names. Judging by Wales’s interaction at the restaurant in episode 67, it is safe to assume that the European qualification tournaments were individual-based as opposed to the one Chris participated in with his team. Finally, Chris’s outfit is reminiscent of cowboys, who are often associated with the U.S. in popular culture, so he could be from there.
The tournament we see in the flashback requires participants to be in a team of three, which is quite different from those we saw in Metal Masters. The qualifier tournament in Japan was divided into two parts: the first, where bladers had to acquire the most points, and the second, where the four best would fight for the positions. The second qualifier tournament takes place in Savannah. It also consists of two parts: three battle royals that will decide three bladers who receive a bracelet. They will then have to defend it for 24 hours.
You may have noticed that these two competitions prioritize individual bladers first to create a team of the strongest bladers rather than simply selecting the strongest team. This approach seems odd and counterproductive if you aim to win the championship because, even if you have a strong team, it could be uneven, like the old Team Dungeon or even Team Wild Fang. As a result, even if your team consists of two powerful bladers, you could face a team of three stronger opponents, leading to defeat.
However, there is one advantage to this particular format. It works well if you want certain people on the team, or more specifically, if you want to ensure that the team you manage includes all the kids you’ve trained/experimented on. What I am suggesting here is that the team format ensured that the members Ziggurat selected from HD Academy would become the U.S. representatives because, in his eyes, they were the strongest team possible. Supporting this is the existence of mighty American bladers like (possibly) Chris. He was already strong at the time and had Phantom Orion, which was a powerful bey even without the star fragment. So, there was a real threat to Ziggurat's protégés. Ziggurat is prudent, methodical, and has blind faith in his invention, so it would make sense that he believed he had created the strongest team, one that would benefit the most from the tournament format. He could have also easily influenced the officials to structure the qualification tournament in this way. Not to mention, he already held the coach position before the team was chosen, and he very well could have bribed the appropriate people. After all, he paid the Garcias and wasn’t afraid to toy with Toby’s life to keep Zeo obedient, so what’s a few bribes?
If this theory is true, it would give new context to Chris's backstory. Because of this tournament, his friends thought he was too strong and turned their backs on him, leading Chris to become the cold-hearted and greedy mercenary blader we meet in Metal Fury. This would be particularly ironic, as he would have ended up working for the very people who indirectly caused this to happen to him.

The Art Of Redemption - Timeline
Okay, so this isn't a timeline strictly for The Art of Redemption. It's more like a timeline for characters that appear in that story as well as in We Are Sugar Valentine, since the two are more than tangentially connected.
We Are Sugar Valentine is taking place in present day (2022-2024) and The Art of Redemption takes place in 2011-2012.
I noticed that several people may have been confused because I tend to jump around a lot between stories and also with random vignettes. It's all perfectly clear in my head, but since nobody else is living in my head, I thought a timeline of important events for all the major characters would help everyone make sense of it.

Today's translation #334
Yuri!!! on ICE DVD #6, Characters' profiles
Jean Jacques Leroy
A 19-years-old, who has already reached the position of a top skater and this season advanced to the Grand Prix Final with zero loses. His jumps, including quad lutz, are both high and good quality - there is nothing to criticize in them, and there is nothing lacking in his technique - his powerful skating and transitions, in which he often use hydroblading, a technique that he is particularly good at. In the Final, he recovered from the last position after the short program, and managed to land a quad loop, even though he had a step out. Is this ability to turn anything into profit, what makes him the self-proclaimed "King"?
He's a devote Christian, who loves his family and his country. In the past he changed coaches often, and that could have something to do with him being very self-assured, but now he is coached by his parents, that are ex-ice dancers. His younger siblings also compete in juniors - the Leroys are a family of figure skaters.
Otabek Altin
When he was still in juniors, he didn't stand out much as a competitor, but since last season, he has rapidly started to gain more strength and that resulted in him getting a bronze medal at Worlds. He isn't a skater particularly blessed with flexibility and good style, but by pursuing his own way of fighting, he developed his manly, sincere and sturdy style that can't be copied by anyone else - the exact opposite to softness and glamour. His triple axel is also highly praised for its height, width and flow.
Starting from Kazakhstan, where figure skating isn't particularly popular, with a goal to reach the World level, he trained in various countries looking for better conditions and coaches, but this year, he returned to his home country. He doesn't speak much, but his words and actions are always very simple "YES" or "NO". His hobby are bikes and DJ-ing.
[Notes: Since I happen to translate from DVDs' booklets rn, and the recent "controversy" (which is completely based on nothing but misinterpretation spread by anti-MAPPA part of the Eng fandom) happened...
It seems that not many of those people, who accuse Otsuka CEO of lying - because clearly MAPPA made so much money, since the DVDs were selling so well - ever owned those DVDs. MAPPA's name just isn't anywhere on them...
Tumblr media
The state of the fandom makes me genuinely sad, as somebody who loves this show really, really a lot, but people pretending they know the anime industry better than an anime studio's CEO is still a peak dark comedy... 💀

Urban Fantasy DND/Fabula Ultima
Trying to build a divine urban fantasy for a DND/Fabula Ultima campaign is hard. I guess just building a campaign idea or a session is hard. Especially for myself since ideas just seem to come and go as they please. I'm more and more leaning to making this another New York Urban Fantasy but I was trying really hard to make it a Los Angeles Urban Fantasy. But I guess it'll depend on the players what map to choose really?
For instance, if we were to do a Los Angeles Urban Fantasy Campaign, inserting Greco-Roman Mythology into the Mundane should work to some degree but making them the focal point Pantheon would feel kind of out of place. Especially for being, if I recall properly, a spanish colony. What would make more sense is if the roman catholic christian mythos was stronger so there'd be more apocalyptic angels and the like so less American Gods or Percy Jackson and more Good Omens and Lucifer. And American Gods feel is more what I'm shooting for. Some New York Urban Fantasy Ideas that came out tonight
The Underworld New York Metro
The local punk goblin gang that graffities the walls underneath the abandoned train station, only to be chased by a Metro Minotaur service worker who regularly patrols the Underworld Metro to ensure no one gets lost or be swallowed by the Teeth of the Tracks, Nidhogg.
The Teeth of the Tracks is a slithering draconic wyrm that camouflages itself as an out of service train car that only opens itself for the most unsuspecting passenger.
The slack-jawed teenage gnolls and trolls, vaping at the edge of the tracks to look cool.
An infernal train coach, attended by the enigmatic train driver, Charon, that leads those who have the correct change to the very depths of the Underworld Metro and towards the Gates of Hell.
The E(lf)-boy influencer making thirst traps in his Dragonborn daddy’s dungeon, stirrups and all.
