As promised, Miranda gave you the antidote to her poison. However in doing so, she also hooked you up to an I.V. to keep you lethargic and weak. You quickly lost track of the days and struggled to keep your eyes open. Every time you slept more memories of your past filtered into your mind.

The sickness claimed your father first. His heart had always been fragile, and the strain of the illness was too much for him to bear. You can still see the way his chest heaved, the labored breaths that grew weaker until they finally stopped.

Then it was your youngest sister, Dahlia. You were outside tending to the animals when you heard her cough—a violent, gut-wrenching sound that sent you running. By the time you reached her, she was hunched over, her tiny body shaking as she hacked up a thick, black sludge. You held her, rubbing her back, trying to comfort her, but the sight of it filled you with dread.

She died eleven days later. 

Next was your brother, Beaux—the second-born and the only boy. He did everything he could to hide his symptoms, always putting on a brave face. He hid it so well that when your mother went to wake him for breakfast one morning, she found her son already gone, lying peacefully in his bed. Though the grief crushed you, there was a small comfort in knowing that his death had been quiet, perhaps painless.

Your mother died next. Though you suspect she died from grief rather than the illness. By the time the sickness took hold, she had already surrendered to it. She barely fought—just faded away, like a candle burning itself out.

You wish you could say you were surprised when your second-youngest sister, Clara came up to you with blackened handkerchief. The sight of it twisted your gut, but deep down, you'd been expecting it—dreading it. The look in her eyes, a mix of fear and resignation, mirrored your own.

“Not you, too,” you whispered, voice cracking as you knelt beside her, brushing the hair from her clammy forehead. She didn’t answer, just leaned into your touch, her small body trembling with the weight of her sickness.

Clara held on longer than Dahlia, longer than any of them. You think she was trying to hang on for your sake, but eventually, the outcome was the same. When she finally slipped away, it was as though the last thread tethering you to any sense of normalcy had snapped. The house became a hollow shell, filled with silence and loss.

You were almost relieved when the coughing started. The thick, black sludge came up with every breath, greeting you like an old friend—a grim sign that your time was finally coming. The burning in your throat, the weight in your chest, all of it felt like a promise. Soon, you thought. Soon, you’d see them again. Your father, your mother, Dahlia, Beaux, and Clara—all of them waiting for you, and for the first time in weeks, the gnawing emptiness inside you began to ease.

You welcomed the sickness, didn’t fight it like the others had. In some twisted way, it felt like the answer to your grief. The world had become a colder, emptier place without them, and this disease—the thing that had stolen everything from you—was now offering to take you, too. Maybe it was a mercy. Maybe it was fate.

Surely fate wouldn’t be so cruel?

SHADOWS PAUSE AT THE WINDOW

“Glory, he’s burning up!” Darry pulled his hand back from his brother’s forehead like it was on fire. Ace knew she should do something. Call for help— check his pulse— anything other than just stand there and gawk. But she couldn't move. It was like her brain was no longer connected to her body and she was frozen in place. All she could think about was that he couldn’t join their friends. Ace never prayed once in her life. But in that moment, what ran through her head on repeat was "please, God, not him, too." Takes place right after “Little Brother” (aka Dally’s death). Ponyboy collapses and is rushed to the hospital. The rest of the gang is left trying to wrap their heads around the fact they just lost two of their family members in one foul swoop.

“You’ll leave,” Ace admitted, weakly. Only two words and yet they were sitting in the darkest crevices of her brain. Admitting the truth was hard. It made her fears real. And she felt vulnerable by it. Vulnerability only ever got her hurt. But she felt like she had no other option with Marcia.

“No, I won’t-”

“Yes, you will,” Ace interrupted. “You’ll see how fucked everything really is and decide you want nothin’ to do with it and- and I wouldn’t even blame you. I’m a mess, Marcia.” She was trying so hard to keep the tears at bay. They were there, begging to be expressed. But she was holding her breath— suffocating— afraid to let it out. That was the last inch of control she had. “I’m a fuckin’ mess.”

Warm hands encompassed her own to control the jitters they had and stop the way she’d begun to tear the skin around her nails apart. She focused on the feeling, how soft Marcia’s skin felt compared to her own. There were no calluses on her knuckles. She had a fresh manicure that was smooth to the touch.

“Listen to me, Ace. I love the cool, tough-as-nails-chick who’ll get in the face of a guy twice her size because they pickin’ on her friend— the girl who handed me a switch blade and started giving me tips on stabbin’ people.” Ace gave a small laugh and tried to pull her hands away to wipe the sweat from her palms on her clothing. But Marcia wouldn’t let her. She only brought Ace’s hands in closer and to her chest. Ace could feel Marcia’s heart beating steadily.

“But I don’t expect you to be her all the time. This world ain’t fair and there’s only so much one person can take. Even Wonder Woman has her breaking point.”

Hey so uh how does one actually go about watching dsmp lore??? I tried watching it in full once from a big ass yt playlist that was meant to have all the important stuff but it was loads of giant long vods that I don't have the attention span for with tiny amounts of relevent lore and I didn't make it very far. I'm assuming ur not supposed to watch it like a show, right??? Like you don't have to watch literally everything that happened???? I could probably just cherrypick some important+interesting plot points and watch them in a vague order????? How do you people do this

Ah yes, DSMP lore, the forever discussion. I'll be honest, it's not easy to get into the DSMP lore because you have a bunch of different POVs that cover a bunch of different plot lines and events, and at least some of this is lost media (streams were not always archived so there are big chunks of people's POVs missing).

I agree that trying to watch ALL of it (all POVs, all storylines) is not a good approach. What is a good approach might be subjective, but here's my personal advice for the best way to experience the DSMP canon as a latecomer:

1 - Pick a specific POV and start with that

A lot easier than trying to watch all in one go or even cherry-picking 'important events' is to pick one specific person's POV and try to watch all of that. You can use a CC whose style you mash with. Personally, I would highly recommend Techno's POV not because I'm biased (though I am) but because he's one of the few CC who has a convenient playlist with all his streams, so you get a complete experience. He also was reasonably involved in a lot of 'bigger' events without streaming daily to the point it gets overwhelming to backwatch his POV. The downside of his POV is you'll miss the pre-Pogtopia stuff, but you can use his POV as a starting point to decide what other CC you'd want to see their POVs of, or watch more POVs of a specific event AFTER you've experienced it within the canon timeline. I do not recommend watching them in a vague order to start out though, I do feel you'd significantly lose the impact of the story.

2 - Yes, you have to watch the giant long vods (kinda)

Yes, the dsmp has a lot of random long 'filler' vods in between big events, but that filler often does build characters and makes you attached to them, so I don't really think skipping them completely and only watching compilations of big events is really going to give you a good experience. People also drop surprise background info in the vods sometimes, there's roleplay beyond just the Big Events (tm). At the very least, you should skim the large vods or maybe play them in the background while doing something else. If you pick a CC you really like, their long vods won't feel like a chore (again, Techno is great for this since he's so entertaining imo).

3 - But also you don't HAVE to watch the long vods (or anything)

On the other hand, the upside of the multiple POV thing is that you don't really like, have to experience everybody's POV. It's okay (and part of the true dsmp experience) to miss out on stuff. I never got into Kinoko Kingdom, I never got into Karl's whole time travel thing, I know very little about Puffy or Ponk or even Eret. You can just stick to your chosen POV and even if that's all you ever invest in, you got yourself a lovely little story to follow. Do not feel the pressure of needing to partake in EVERY plot line or character because I don't think there are many dsmp fans wo have done that and had a good time lol.

4 - You can get your lore from other sources

If you do want to know more about specific events, characters, dynamics, etc and don't want to watch a million POVs, there's really no shame in getting your lore from other sources. Fanart, fanfic, animatics, the wiki, transcripts or lore analysis fans wrote, etc. My only advice is to stay mindful that fans are biased and in the dsmp fandom specifically some people get really fanon-y with their interpretations, so keep that in the back of your mind. Try to take everything with a grain of salt or not just listen to the stans of one character, because they might be misrepresenting canon lol.

I'm not a big fan of a lot of the compilation videos that try to condense the entire dsmp because they often seem super biased to one character and you lose all the charm of the multi-pov approach, hence why I don't advise them as, like, the 'main' or 'first' way to get into dsmp. BUT if you already watched your chosen blorbo's POV and you just want to get some more bite-sized content on one specific event or character, some compilation videos can be nice. Just, again, be aware that you're losing at least SOME context and seeing a very condensed version.

If you want to partake in any kind of lore analysis or discussion for the love of god make sure you got your canon facts straight bc I'm so sick of people bringing fanon/heacanons into actual lore posts- -gets shot-

5 - Just find somebody who is mentally ill /j

In the same vein as 'it's okay to get your lore from other sources', other sources can be 'a random dude on tumblr'. There's a ton of people who are still very passionate about specific characters/lore from the dsmp or the dsmp as a whole, and who probably are more than willing to talk about their favs and lay out the lore for you. I know I certainly need only minimal encouragement to yap about c!Techno and his lore and his relationships for HOURS, and I'm knowledgeable about canon dsmp lore in general, so even if it's not about c!Techno I don't mind answering questions. Curious about a specific character/event/lore thing? Just ask somebody. It's free, it's quick, it's going to make a mentally ill person's day /hj

Again with this one I do advise keeping in mind that some people are biased and might confuse fanon with canon (I'm reasonably good at not doing that, I'd say, but I am a little biased towards c!Techno to some degree probably), and I'd only advise doing it after you've already watched your chosen POV at least for a little while and only use it to get extra info or other perspectives. Unless you wanna ask somebody to lay out like, THE ENTIRE LORE of the server which seems kinda silly. But I bet you'd still find somebody who is willing to do that (sombody is me).

Opinion on the comments in some of the the @ao3topshipsbracket polls: a wildly popular ship is not the same as one that had an actual impact on fandom history. Most popular ships have little to no impact outside their own fandom. Which isn’t to say that ships can’t have impact on their own fandom history, just that they don’t have much impact on general fandom history as a whole.

I understand that the polls aren’t actually measuring fandom history but this got me thinking about what has actually and I think these are the ones:

Spirk - origin of slash fandom shipping and laid the groundwork for fandom/shipping in general

MSR - responsible for the term ‘shipping’ and was the driving force behind the beginning of fandom/shipping on the internet and the creation of fanfiction.net

BTVS - (unfortunately) gave rise to the idea of being ‘anti’ something and ship wars

Harry Potter - most affected fandom on livejournal by the censorship which led to the creation of ao3

Thoughts? I couldn’t think of another fandom/ship that has huge impacts outside of their own fandom.

Strikethrough made people more eager for AO3, but the original inspiration was a for-profit fic archive made by venture capitalists.

The X-Files' big archive was Gossamer. Was MSR really influential in the creation of FFN? I don't remember that.

What ships have a big impact really depends on era and how you're looking at things. K/S and MSR are the obvious ones from long after the fact, yes.

Starsky/Hutch was what really split Media Fandom from literary SF fandom. Star Trek started the split, but it was people getting into a buddy cop show that made it clear that fanfic zine types weren't just about science fiction anymore, not even "mass media" SF in place of book SF.

Bodie/Doyle was the moment people stopped being media fans and started being Slash Fandom specifically. The US fandom had barely even seen the show: they were there for the slash zines.

Jim/Blair fandom gave us sentinel/guide AUs. The Sentinel as a canon sure as fuck didn't.

Ranma fandom set the pattern for every dumb "which girl will he end up with?" fight in anime fandom forever after.

IDK if we can blame 1x2 as opposed to Gundam Wing fandom for inspiring people to many other incomprehensible math equation ships in every anime fandom with dumb number names.

Popslash popped a bunch of prudes' RPF cherries, then LOTRiPS did, then J2 did, then hockey did, then BTS did.

Free! and then Yuri on Ice started the long slide from anime fandoms mostly refusing to leave FFN to newer anime fandoms being on AO3. YOI also lured a lot of people into anime for the first time.

Wangxian got a bunch of "Ewww, no anime ever! Western fandoms 5eva!" people into Asian fandoms at long last. (Whether this was a good thing is a matter of opinion. Hahaha.)

A favorite of mine, it’s adorable and delves into Hilson:

Worried about a series of strange symptoms he's experiencing, Wilson anxiously approaches House for a diagnosis. House delightedly diagnoses Wilson with 'being in a serious relationship'.

It’s so cute, it had me smiling the whole time at these silly goofs. The cherry on top is the wonderful description of Wilson, I think they absolutely nailed it. If you want a canon description of Wilson’s body type this fic has you covered!

As for other fics I don’t really have any others that are as good as this one, most mention it in passing but this one highlights it wonderfully.
