@horsetailcurlers2 and i finally finished the magicians the other day and though i do think the show shouldve ended differently and really should have been different from like s4e12 onward, i think with the current ending it just doesnt make thematic sense for eliot and alice to be where they are

like somehow eliot has tied himself down to brakebills which admittedly the physical cottage is his safe space or whatever but on the whole feels like hes not doing what he should be doing in the grand scheme of his character, (in terms of like tethering himself to a place where he was never actually himself and tethering himself to anywhere in general but i digress) like he should be helping build new fillory!! him and margo and josh and fen should be together and i feel like that was just thrown away for alice's self discovery or whatever (like cmon weve seen what the healers in the magical world can do, youre telling me broken fingers trumps missing fingers in terms of spellcasting??) it would also help on his growth, showing that although fillory kindve sucks and he definitely does not want to run it, it is still his home now and making sure its okay?? well thats been his goal fo a while even without being high king (also him naming margo high king margo the creator would have been way more moving than fen doing it im sorry)

whereas alice herself would have shown major growth if she were to be with the library or at brakebills, showing that she finally understands the importance of not just hoarding knowledge but sharing it (if she were a professor at brakebills) or working towards sharing it (leading the library in a way that further goes with that view shes been working on getting for the past idk four seasons???)

it also would have furthered both of their connections to quentin, with alice working with brakebills and eliot in fillory, which were where both of their connections to him really flourished and grew and how they could stay connected to him despite it all

AN: I love the idea of Eliot having a twin sister, so while this is currently a one-off, I will probably dive head first into this new hyper-focus and do more stories about Eliora and Penny.

Eliora Waugh was the twin sister of the infamous Eliot. The two of them surviving the corn fields of their youth by sticking together and practicing magic without their father finding out. Brakebills had been their escape, the place they felt most like themselves, even if that sometimes felt empty and alone. Eliot had Margo, but Eliora hadn’t found her person yet… at least not until William ‘Penny’ Adiyodi arrived for his first year at the school. At first, he’d been his gruff and cynical self, but Eliora was hard to resist.

Penny had assumed she’d be just like her twin, but he’d been pleasantly surprised when he found her to be nearly opposite. As a traveler herself, she preferred to think things through rather than run into them headfirst. A mix of quiet strength, brilliant humor, and emotional complexity that had Penny falling head over heels quickly.

The two of them had been through hell and back together, and one stupid decision lost him everything he’d been fighting so hard to protect. Kady had asked him to steal a book on how to kill a god; only the section had been poisoned, and no one had thought to tell Eliora that her boyfriend had super cancer. She’d gone to Fillory to help Eliot and Margo and to keep Fen company- only to be met with a Faerie infestation. Penny had been pissed when he found out the Faerie Queen had threatened HIM to keep Eliora there, but she promised him that when this nightmare was over that she would go wherever he wanted, and they could live their lives together and leave this mess behind. It had been the only thing keeping them going and now…

Penny had witnessed the news of his death being spread among his ‘friends’ and wasn’t impressed. Not one person cried for him? Then it hit him: Eliora hadn’t been told yet. He’d spent a good amount of time watching her interact with her sister-in-law. His heart aching with the need to touch her; the way she spoke about him, her hope for their future… he thought it might be better if she didn’t find out, but of course, this wasn’t something Eliot would keep from her. He’d stepped out for a second, going to check on the nonsense back on earth, and when he’d come back, Eliora was being told. She’d been confused when the Fae Queen told her she needed to return to Earth but hadn’t questioned it. The excitement to see Penny again was nearly palpable, and if her love had been a ghost, he would’ve physically thrown Eliot through the wall to keep him from telling her.

“Eliot! Just who I wanted to see.”

“Ellie…”

“The Fae Queen is insisting I go back to earth! Can you believe it?! I can’t wait to see Penny.”

“Eliora.”

“I know he’s not your favorite person, but he makes me happy, and I love him… isn’t that enough, El?” He wanted to tell her it was. He wanted to lie, let her return home, let someone else tell her, but this was his twin sister. Stepping forward, he gently grabbed the tops of her arms and pressed his forehead to hers. Whatever this was, it made her incredibly nervous. “El?”

“Q sent us a rabbit.”

“Okay… and?”

“Penny…”

“Don’t fucking tell her Eliot! Not like this!” He was screaming at her twin, but neither of them could hear him, and now he wasn’t so interested in knowing how people reacted to the news. Her peace was why he’d told Kady not to tell her about the cancer. His friend reminded him that Eliora didn’t know, and he begged her not to say anything until they found a cure. “Do you have to be so fucking dramatic about every damn thing? Jesus! How are you two related, let alone twins?!”

“What about Penny?” She stepped back to see his eyes, not missing how he couldn’t look her in her own. “Eliot. What’s wrong with Penny?”

“He died, Cricket.” He hadn’t called her cricket in months, which was how she knew he wasn’t joking. “He broke into a part of the Neitherlands Library and was poisoned.”

“When?” she whispered, trying not to fall apart.

“Did he die? I'm not sure.”

“No. When did he break into the library?”

“I’m not sure.” Eliot was watching his sister closely, knowing they both tended to hold things close to their chest. “Cricket?”

“Thank you for telling me.”

“You gonna be ok?”

“No.”

She answered honestly, but Penny was a little surprised she wasn’t crying. Surely, the love of his life would shed a few tears for him, but then she started walking away, and he could see that Eliot was just as confused as he was.

“Damn it, Cricket… don’t hold this in,” he whispered behind her, knowing firsthand how things like this could destroy you.

Eliora’s reaction had deeply hurt Penny, but after seeing Benedict’s, he had to say something to her. It didn’t matter that she wouldn’t hear him; he NEEDED to let this out. “Ya know! I thought we really had some-”

He stopped midsentence at the sight of her curled up on the bed, crying so hard she was shaking. Fen was sitting beside her, stroking her hair and doing her best to comfort her, but the overwhelming pain of losing him made it impossible for her to calm down.

“He was supposed to wait for me.” She sobbed. “He swore he wouldn’t… have I been deluding myself? Did he love her more than he loved me?”

“What? No! Don’t think that, baby. It’s always been you.”

“I don’t see how anyone could love someone more than you,” Fen answered sweetly. Her affection for her sister-in-law went deep, having vented to her many times throughout her marriage to Eliot. When she returned from the Faerie realm, Eliora was the only one who could get through to her, the only one Fen trusted. “I may not have known him well, but I saw the way he loved you. It’s the way I wish your brother loved me.” Eliora looked up at her friend with hurt in her eyes, but Fen didn’t feel cheated; she felt lucky. “Penny worshiped you, Ellie.”

“I still do.” He whispered, sitting beside her and wishing he could hold her. “I’m so sorry, Ora… I never should’ve… I love you.”

“Thank you, Fen. I… can you give me a moment, please?”

“Of course. If you need anything.”

“I’ll let you know.” The dam only lasted until Fen shut the door, then the floodgates reopened, and her pain oozed out of her like a black sludge. Nothing could be seen in the physical realm but in the astral… Penny could physically see the heartbreak flowing: a thick, black river of her tears and anguish. “Damnit, Pen… you swore.”

He wanted to tell her everything. Explain what had happened and why it had been a ‘now or never’ kind of situation. He wanted to kiss her and promise they’d see one another again… “I’ll fix this.” He promised, lying beside her and wishing on every star that he’d one day get to hold her again.
