Eliot's tie
OK, so I needed an art reference, a wardrobe change for Q that I haven't seen on screen. I went looking for Eliot's tie.
And I drew it...wide end on Eliot's left.
I'm now getting dressed for a function tonight (had a bad night, don't ask). And I'm putting on my tie. Resting position, the wide end is on my right.
Of course, Eliot ties his ties left-handed...how did I ever forget...

The Fires We See
AO3
It was strange to look into the face of a dragon and still think he was lovely, digging visually down through scales to find the essence of Quentin hiding in the shape of the brow and those puppy eyes. Eliot knew he was a hopeless case when it came to Quentin Coldwater, but he never realized how hopeless until he realized he could wax poetic about his scales.
To be fair to Eliot's inner poet, up close, he looked like an opal and he could change color. Sequestered within the cave and the dimly lit rock formation and his melancholy, he was a bit obsidian. In the light, though, he looked like magic fire. Or maybe gay fire, something like that. Either way, if not for a lot of ethical issues, mainly consent of the best friend issue, he would absolutely try to steal a scale and put it in a ring of his own.
Eliot rubbed his forehead, trying not to sigh again since Quentin seemed to take every sigh as a declaration that having a dragon for company was the worst thing possible. It was, actually, but only because they were on a ticking clock where the timer going off would mean Q snapped and lost his humanity, thus devouring cities and their inhabitants.
Ember was the actual worst. He had a thing for turning people into animals, magical or otherwise. They still didn't know if they found all the rats. It was like that witch-rat from Buffy; they were just going to be running around in little rat cages till someone figured out the right spell.
Quentin didn't have that luxury. He had a cave, some furniture he was too big for, and blankets he was warm enough not to need even in the weird cold front that came after Ember turned to little golden sparkles (and also a body they buried).
"So...'The cure comes not with a shout, but in the stillness.' Meaning it's methodical, quiet, and we... have to be quiet... I guess. Maybe a silencing spell..." He was making guesses, "'Not in the flames we see, but the fires we don't.' Other kinds of flame? Invisible fire? Julia knows a spell for that, I think."
Quentin turned his head, fixing Eliot with a forlorn look with that big eye. These are matters of a dragon heart. Quentin never had a shortage of heart. Which meant it would be an easy target for any Fillorian's with spears.
Not going to happen. Not while Eliot Waugh, and everyone else, were on the job. Ember could try, but they wouldn't let him have this parting shot.
Talk of a dragon heart in anything regarding a spell was bad too. Dragon heart this and dragon heart that in a spell ingredient list didn't sound out of character for Fillory.
That big dragon's body shifted uncomfortably. He knew what Q was thinking. They already got the crew together on a moonless night to cast every enchantment they could dig up. Then they did it again for every stage the moon had been so far with no result. They tried it old school, like the books probably written by boring straight men suggested, and cast every spell naked by torchlight. They chanted, for pity's sake!
Perhaps rightfully, Quentin did not believe they would save him. He was trapped inside that body, barely able to form the most basic words with his newly forked tongue. No one blamed him for harboring some doubts. Q didn't believe, but Eliot had to.
Finger under that sharp jawline, Eliot turned Quentin's long neck enough that he could look into both eyes, and Q let him do it, "I need you to listen," the scales glided along his palms as he cradled a massive maw between his hands, "It's going to be okay. I'm not leaving this cave until we show that curse who its daddy is."
Quentin's nostrils flared in a cute little huff, but he very carefully did not breathe a hint of fire.
"We've got this." Nothing changed in those sad eyes, so Eliot pressed harder, "I've got you, baby boy. Do you understand me? I'm going to fix this, whatever it takes. Even if I need to fly to the moon!"
One of those clawed fingers traced letters into the rock like a chisel. Icarus
"You did not." Eliot drew back and shook his finger at the pointed, opinionated snout, "Don't you mythology me, sir! Oh no!"
Quentin's slit-pupil eyes rolled.
"I said the moon, not the sun. I know the story. You can't trick me that easily, my good sir."
That big claw tapped on the name again anyway to continue his point.
"I'm going to fix it, come hell or high water."
Quentin shook his head in the negative, pulling away from Eliot's hands, which only made him get up so he could follow that big head, grabbing him by the fangs to keep him there.
"You are not giving up on me! Do you hear me, Quentin Coldwater?"
The nictitating membrane moved over his eyes even before he shut them; that was definitely still weird. Even so, the message that Quentin felt vulnerable, overwhelmed, and afraid was there. He could not speak, but that didn't mean Eliot couldn't hear. Few things hurt the way watching someone he loved suffer did. He ached to set things right, an ache that traveled down into the core of him.
Eliot let go of his fangs, feeling a tug of guilt for pushing him. He never wanted to hurt Q. Everything was just... a lot. For all of them. The last person to blame for it was Quentin. Running his blunt nails along those scales, he attempted to offer soothing chin scratches. It worked on cats.
"Nothing is going to happen to you," which was made less impressive as a statement when there was already a curse. Eliot set his forehead along Quentin's snout, "I won't let you go, Q. I won't ever let you go."
For just a second, he could swear he heard Quentin's voice, You might not have a choice.

Warm Up Masterlist and Wrap-Up
We're so thrilled you've all joined us on this journey! From December 1 through our extension day December 8, 2024, twelve creators provided us with forty-three individual entries to Warm Up! This included thirteen artworks and thirty short written works of fic (and/or poetry, in two cases). They're all listed below for you to enjoy anytime.
The challenge focused on micro Magicians fanworks of all types, welcoming both new works and additions to existing WIPs. The “warm up” theme could include vibes that are warm, cozy, related to winter, being hot (in any sense of that word), warming up or preparing for a big event, just starting out in something like magic, and other creative takes. Read more about Warm Up.
To all creators: Thank you so much for sharing your talents with us! We're so delighted and honored! It's been such a joy seeing your work emerge and creating alongside you! (Please let us know if any corrections are needed to your information below.)
To all fans: We appreciate you so much! Your encouragement keeps us going! Please stop by and like/kudos and/or comment wherever you feel so moved!
And thank you so very much to our team of mods for making this event a reality with your knowledge, skills, hard work, kindness, and generosity of spirit! Our team includes: @eliotqueliot, @magicians4time, @museinabsentia, @state-of-being, and @unlifeira.
Our challenge took place on Tumblr and AO3. Some of the works (especially art) may appear only on Tumblr. Additionally, some creators may prefer you encounter their work first on a specific platform. So, due to Tumblr restrictions on the number of links in a post: If the work is on more than one platform, the title links to the creator's preference, with the alternate platform listed afterwards. Creators are tagged to their Tumblr profile. We'll name their AO3 handle as well, but if their work also has an AO3 link, please use that to find their profile.
Please also visit the AO3 Warm Up Subcollection, which includes twenty-three distinct titles (many of these individual works include multiple pieces created especially for Warm Up, with a note at the start of each work/relevant chapter letting you know what's included). This collection also preserves the guidelines of the challenge.
And now, without further ado...our very esteemed credits for our very first challenge!

Eliot and Quentin face the First Portal
Painted with watercolors for the Warm Up challenge of @magiciansfanworksextravaganza
Quentin and Eliot stand contemplating the ram's head grandfather clock, considering how to get the portal to work without magic. They're getting ready to step into the greatest adventure of their lives. Eliot holds the Illusion Key he obtained; Quentin has a pen, the quest book, and the notebook in which they'll record their mosaic patterns. Eliot shares his knowledge of Horomancy, while Quentin provides his understanding of the portal from the Fillory books. They stand on the brink, just one moment before "Go time," the start of a quest for which they've unknowingly been preparing themselves all their lives: because what solves the quest is the "you and me" of it all: who they are and what they know; and most of all, who they are together.
Please note, this is one of those paintings whose more subtle details really only come through on a larger screen (computer or laptop) and at better resolution--tiny details like the hint of Q almost being ready to smile. So please visit Chapter 4 of Mosaic Haiku on AO3 when you get a chance. Thanks!

"Oh, my god. Magic!"
Painted with watercolors for the Warm Up challenge of @magiciansfanworksextravaganza
This is the start of the Mosaic Quest for the Time Key. The moment where Eliot and Quentin discover that magic is alive is like all the lights being turned on!
I love this timeless moment where Eliot is drinking in magic--the first sign perhaps that there is something extra-special about this particular leg of the quest between them. Not only is this the beginning of their quest--one which they may have thought would be a little day jaunt and turned out to take a solid lifetime--but their instant response is to embrace one another with joy, practically dancing together as they hop around. This little moment has a big impact on the story and is a great symbol of their deep connection.
This painting appears as the final (ninth) illustrated scene in Chapter 4 of my ongoing project Mosaic Haiku, celebrating the mosaic lives and love of Eliot and Quentin. (I work in traditional media. The AO3 has greater resolution for my art, especially if you can view on a laptop or computer.)

"Hey. I, umm…" (Warming Up at the Mosaic)
Painted with watercolors for the Warm Up challenge of @magiciansfanworksextravaganza
This is the moment before Quentin kissed Eliot for the first time at the Mosaic--and their relationship really heated up for the first time while there, getting things started between them, and sweetly hinting at all they would be to each other. Their ease with one another, their deep connection and affection, shine through even before they're figured things out. They truly work--such a great pair, soulmates and best friends. So. Great warmth of the heart. Such heat between them. Warming up/starting out. And some fire to add to the ambiance.
This painting appears as the third illustrated scene in Chapter 4 of my ongoing project Mosaic Haiku, celebrating the mosaic lives and love of Eliot and Quentin. (I work in traditional media. The AO3 has greater resolution for my art, especially if you can view on a laptop or computer.)
