"Eliot."
Painted for the @magiciansfanworksextravaganza challenge Welcome Home!, Week 2, "It's been a long time," with special emphasis on the Mosaic.
Tumblr media
Quentin at the Mosaic, in the moment when he realizes Eliot's dead. They spent the longest amount of time together there is: a lifetime. A heartbreaking moment that speaks deeply to their love for one another (so many kinds throughout their lives: as husbands, fathers, lovers, best friends, fellow questers and kings, family) and to just how much they gave to this quest, and each other (everything).

"I'll tell you where I'll put this."
Painted for the @magiciansfanworksextravaganza challenge Welcome Home!, Week 2, "It's been a long time," with special emphasis on the Mosaic.
Tumblr media
I'm focusing exclusively on the Mosaic this week! I love everything about Queliot at the Mosaic so much, and this moment of Eliot teasing Quentin is just so iconic, capturing so much at the heart of their dynamic. They truly are the only ones who could solve the puzzle, for so many reasons. It's a story not only of love but of courage, to commit their entire lives to this quest--and too each other. Amazing and beautiful. But the humor and affection between them are among my many, many favorite things.
Sometimes things look funny when you make a larger picture small. This painting looks much better full-size. To see this watercolor painting with greater resolution/sharpness (if you have the chance to view it on a computer or laptop, you'll get more detail), visit Chapter 4 of Mosaic Haiku on AO3:

Tumblr media
Welcome Home! We're so happy you could join us for Week 1 of our Magicians fanworks challenge. Here's a recap of what's been posted in our first week!
WEEK 1: Jan. 27-Feb. 2, Home—What constitutes “home” to the characters? What do they think of “home,” good or bad? (Creators may choose the overall event theme, Welcome Home, anytime during the event.)
We had 19 entries from 7 creators. Fanwork types included 9 artworks, 9 fic, and 1 poetry chapter. Of these, 18 followed the Week 1 theme; 1 followed the overall event theme, and is so marked. The pieces are amazing and beautiful and we're so grateful to have them!
Due to Tumblr link restrictions, the title links to the creator's preference of Tumblr/AO3, with the other one listed after. Creators are tagged to their Tumblr profile. We'll name their AO3 handle, with a link to their profile if needed; if their work already has an AO3 link, please use that to find their profile.

Eliot tucks in Quentin and Teddy (Watercolor edition)
Painted for the @magiciansfanworksextravaganza challenge Welcome Home!, Week 1, "Home."
Tumblr media
The sweetness of this moment goes straight to my heart. To me, and to them as well, this is the essence of "home." Eliot cares for Quentin and Teddy so lovingly, even when they don't know it. Especially when they need it most, after losing Arielle. This loving family is truly "the beauty of all life."

The Once and Future Kings of Fillory are back!
Created Chapter 2 of "The Once and Future Kings of Fillory" for the @magiciansfanworksextravaganza challenge Welcome Home!, Week 1, "Home."
Tumblr media
This fic started out almost two years ago in response to the prompt "The Cottage at the Mosaic" for Magicians Settings Week (my beloved)! At long last, the 2nd chapter has arrived!
The Once and Future Kings of Fillory - Chapter 2 - EliotQueliot - The Magicians (TV) [Archive of Our Own]
Summary:
Eliot and Quentin have made a life here for 35 years. The Mosaic cottage is home—the place where Teddy will return, looking for them; a space they've made their own, as cozy as can be; the stable spot where they've loved each other all this time—and they still haven't solved that damned puzzle. Do they really want to entertain members of the royal council who hope to lure them back to their lives as lieges, as an alternative to youthful Pickwick rule? In a word? Not.
The Once and Future Kings of Fillory (6981 words) by EliotQueliot Chapters: 2/6 Fandom: The Magicians (TV) Rating: Mature Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings Relationships: Quentin Coldwater/Eliot Waugh Characters: Quentin Coldwater, Eliot Waugh Additional Tags: Episode: s03e05 A Life in the Day, Mosaic, Mosaic Timeline (The Magicians: A Life in the Day), Kings & Queens, The Cottage at the Mosaic, queliot Summary: Eliot and Quentin can't get away from their royal responsibilities that easily. Even at the Mosaic. In which Q and El are silver foxes (the human kind). Oh, and Eliot is a swordsman, and Quentin is ripped from building an extension on the cottage. Teddy is grown and off on a quest of his own, and all Quentin and Eliot want to do is have a nice quiet life as retired kings solving a puzzle and drinking tea in their own cottage using the nice china, with the newest High Queen of Fillory. Is that too much to ask? Apparently, it is, because Whitespire keeps knocking on their door. Goddamn it.

Quentin holding Teddy
Made this drawing for the @magiciansfanworksextravaganza challenge Welcome Home!, Week 1, "Home."
Tumblr media
Quentin is a great dad. He and Teddy are just so loving together. Seeing them fills my heart with warmth. Everything about the Mosaic family feels like home to me. I love the fact that Q named Teddy after his dad. In a lot of ways we get to see the loving relationship Q and Ted shared, through the beautiful way Q interacts with Ted's grandson.
It's also during the early family scenes when we really get to see the questing cottage painted and decorated, showing how they do think of this as their home. My headcanon that El had a lot to do with this; which just adds to the feeling I have whenever I see any members of this family, that they are always, always all in each other's minds and hearts...building a home together.

Eliot holds Quentin after she's gone
For the @magiciansfanworksextravaganza challenge Welcome Home!, Week 1, "Home." This is a heartbreaking moment but also very touching. The core truth it holds for me is that in the wake of losing so much, Quentin still finds home in Eliot's arms. They've always been home to each other, and made a home together in many ways and many places, but this...is the heart of it all.

Week One (Home) - First Entry
@magiciansfanworksextravaganza
My first (and quite sad honestly) entry for the first week of the MFEWelcomeHome Event! Fic link under the cut.
The Ghosts of Wisteria House and Old-Road (7506 words) by violetsarefuckingpurple Chapters: 1/1 Fandom: The Magicians (TV) Rating: Not Rated Warnings: Graphic Depictions Of Violence, Major Character Death Relationships: Quentin Coldwater/Eliot Waugh Characters: Quentin Coldwater, Eliot Waugh, Alice Quinn (The Magicians), others mentioned - Character Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Ghosts, Screenplay/Script Format, Non-Linear Narrative, Homophobia, Eliot's Dad and Grandma make abusive cameos, Fluff and Angst, There is more sweetness than these warnings are implying I think, But this is very melancholic overall so definitely only read if you are in the mood for that, And there is graphic violence so heed that warning too, Amnesia, Sharing a Bed, Ambiguous/Open Ending, Major Character Death is referring to the fact that El and Q start off the script as ghosts, And also that they relive dying a bunch of times Summary: Eliot - a ghost haunting an old, wisteria covered house - and Quentin - a ghost who wanders the winding, woodland road the house sits on - spend their respective afterlives in a dream-logic limbo broken up only by the occasional time they spend together. A romance exploring what ghost-hood would be like: to be a human consciousness unmoored from human reality. Meanwhile, Alice writes a book and mourns her brother. (I wrote this for a class and the names were originally supposed to just be placeholders so there is some oocness throughout. It fit the "Home" theme too well for me to not post it though, so I tried to edit and wrangle the characters back a bit, and I hope you enjoy nonetheless.)

Mosaic Haiku, Chapter 16
Tumblr media
This chapter of Mosaic Haiku is dedicated to exploring the theme "Home" for Week 1 of the 2025 Welcome Home! Magicians fanworks event of @magiciansfanworksextravaganza
Everything about the Mosaic screams "home" to me. Even beyond the Mosaic, Queliot itself is for me all about Eliot and Quentin finding home in one another…and especially building a home together, during their Mosaic lives. Their own definition of what—and whom—home meant changed as the years passed, most markedly—and consciously—in their early years, but certainly continuing to expand, as their grandchildren took a large place in their hearts. But beyond all else, ultimately, their home is one another. (A sentiment echoed in Lev's books.)
--------Mosaic Haiku Intro--------------
Welcome! I'm writing a series of haiku about the Mosaic! Disclaimer, I don't own any of these images (they're from the TV series adapted from Lev Grossman's series, The Magicians, which aired on SyFy). I'm just writing about them, ekphrastic style (seeing the image is an important reference when reading the poem, so I wanted to group them together). To read more about the project, the form, my author's notes (including a few more haiku), and to eventually see the paintings and drawings I'm making of these scenes (often with greater visibility/lighting or other small changes), please visit the page for this chapter at AO3 (link below). Note: I'm slowly making the art, so please stay tuned for that as each piece is done! Either way, I hope you'll enjoy these reflections on the best episode of TV (The Magicians, Season 3, Episode 5, “A Life in the Day”) and my favorite ship, Quentin Coldwater/Eliot Waugh!
Mosaic Haiku (with Art) - Chapter 16 - EliotQueliot - The Magicians (TV) [Archive of Our Own]
(Please also find some cool images for "A Life in the Day" at Getty and SyFy.)
Any haiku without a name above it means it's from both their points of view. (I've only marked "Both" on one set due to it following Quentin's POV with no picture break.)Asterisks between verses mean that these are actually separate poems designed to accompany the same picture, from the same viewpoint, unless a change is marked. Viewpoint changes (sometimes for the same picture) are indicated with the character's name in bold.
Mosaic Haiku, Chapter 16
Tumblr media
Quentin
They don’t see me. One small moment, two pleated parents absorbed in our child
Tumblr media
Years only matter for the memories we share: closer every day Every wrinkle maps patterns of you I love: don’t erase a lifeline We started so young. Hope, despair: would we succeed, go home? Or want to? Harmony, two hearts as one, tile board the right place to lie back and love Our life’s work, worth each tile: we lock together, our pattern complete Our lives work: full, good, our best. We belong. Mark me down for a lifetime. The older we get, the lighter our hearts: fear not, we get to keep this.
Tumblr media
Quentin The beauty of all life: sunrise, Eliot’s soft kiss, a child named Teddy * * * Teddy learns his tiles: serious family business. He's the secret sauce. Creative hands, curious mind, child's wonder: he sees things truly. He'll solve it for sure: if an answer exists, it's coming from my kid. Teddy's why we're here: magic is a world with him: our home, joy in life.
Tumblr media
Eliot Here’s my Teddy break. Deep into our quest, I have everything I need In the maze of my life, how did I find my way here? Magic square marked home.
Tumblr media
Eliot Simply joyous love: My darling son, you make me Belong, know I’m home.
Tumblr media
Quentin We’re on vacation from technology: like Brakebills, without the stress. Magic land, promise and hope. Surely two smart guys can solve a puzzle. Simple life’s not bad: worries? I focus on tiles. Best part: I have you.
Tumblr media
Clock. We got so old. Spellbound with you, I failed to hear the ticking * * * Solve the tiles, go “home.” Lose it all: Teddy, grandkids, lives built together. Our great purpose haunts us now. Our lives before: dread. Don’t make us leave home. * * * Clock. We got so old. Spellbound with you, I failed to hear the ticking
Tumblr media
Quentin Don’t sleep without me I’ll never drift off alone Hold me one more time * * * [Upon giving Eliot his flask] Wait for me. Don’t move on. To brave the Underworld tedium—take this. * * * What’s home without you? Our love’s the key. Bitter trade: this tile is fool’s gold.
Tumblr media
Eliot It didn’t work. It’s not whisking me home. Unless… These tiles are comfy. Quentin You stretch out on tiles, arms spread wide, craving comfort giving me ideas
Tumblr media
Quentin More frustrating than endless Rubik’s Cube tile game: will El make a move? Eliot Best view in the house. Sure, Q. I’ll draw the picture, stash it in my heart.
---------------------
Tumblr media
First and last year? Home’s a distant memory. You’re my priority now.
Tumblr media
(About Eliot)
El’s soft, wondering— Doors opening: could he be mine? Let this be the night
Tumblr media
(About Quentin)
See it in his eyes: Q smiles with purpose: Drink up, Be brave, kiss your man. * * * (Both) Tried so hard. Our art’s No good? Beauty’s here. We decide: Choose a love that lasts. * * * “Art’s long. Life is short.” Ours, reversed: daily patterns, Long, beautiful lives.
---------------------
Tumblr media
No one’s leaving. Let’s Make this home for all: love Settling in—not settling.

2 Days until WELCOME HOME!
Magicians Fanworks Event, Jan. 27-Mar. 9, 2025
Tumblr media
Welcome Home!
We can’t wait to enjoy your work! Our Welcome Home! challenge starts in 2 DAYS! Posting takes place throughout Jan. 27-Mar. 9, 2025 (Eastern time zone) following the guidelines below.
From Jan. 27-Mar. 9, 2025, Eastern time, we’re welcoming fanworks of all types celebrating The Magicians (Lev Grossman/SyFy). This low-key challenge focuses on a series of weekly themes, along with an overall event theme. Throughout, both new works and additions to WIPs are welcome. Plus, existing WIPs that don’t match any of our themes are welcomed with open arms in Week 6!
This challenge takes place on AO3 and Tumblr. To participate, you don’t need to sign up (though we do have instructions for posting so that we can share your work). All types of fanworks are welcome! Yes, yes, yes to fic, art, edits, vids, cosplay, crafting, podfic, fanmixes, pinboards, moodboards, and more! You may create as many or as few things as you want. You can even send us multiple chapters of the same work as separate entries—either for different themes, or the same theme!
The overall theme for the entire event is Welcome Home! If you would like to create something for the overall theme, these are welcome anytime while the event is open.
In addition, here are the weekly themes. If you miss your week, you’ve got a second chance during Week 6, our Free Space/Catch-Up week! Want to continue an existing WIP but it doesn’t match any of our themes? Send it during Week 6!
Please let us know which theme you chose, and make sure your work either:
1. Fits the overall event theme (send anytime Jan. 27-Mar. 9), or:
2. Fits a specific week’s theme (send during that week, or in Week 6)
Exception: New additions to existing WIPs that don’t match a theme are welcome in Week 6.
Special note: As long as one of the themes makes at least a cameo appearance in your piece, it doesn't need to be the main thrust. Further, what qualifies for the theme is defined by you. (If you're not sure we'll get it, we love hints!)
WEEK 1: Jan. 27-Feb. 2, Home—What constitutes “home” to the characters? What do they think of “home,” good or bad?
WEEK 2: Feb. 3-9, "It's been a long time"—It could be a long time since characters saw each other, or a long time engaged on a task like the mosaic. Special note: The 7th anniversary of The Magicians 3x05, “A Life in the Day,” is Feb. 7. We’d love to see Mosaic Fic.
WEEK 3: Feb. 10-16, Seasonal/holiday—Whether or not it’s the current season/holiday right now (any are welcome). This could include “vibes” or “ambience” for the readers to enjoy in connection with a particular holiday (haunted house for Halloween; romance for Valentine’s Day—which falls this week). If the season or holiday is not specifically referenced in the content, please let us know which one it is.
WEEK 4: Feb. 17-23, Magical creature—A being from the show or books, or from mythology/folklore, or one you make up.
WEEK 5: Feb. 24-Mar. 2, Returning after absence (or returning to being themselves).
WEEK 6: Mar. 3-9, Free space/catch-up week! If you are writing for the theme of a prior week, please let us know which one. If you’re adding to an existing WIP that doesn’t match any theme, it belongs here—let us know you’re taking part in Welcome back to WIPs!
Remember—any works for the general “Welcome Home” theme may be sent any time the event is open, from Jan. 27-Mar. 9. However, please let us know if you are following the overall event theme rather than that week’s theme.
The last day for challenge entries on Tumblr and/or AO3 will be March 9 at 11:59 PM Eastern. Because we’ve got a catchup week, there won’t be an extension for this challenge. The collection will be closed the moment the calendar switches to March 10.
We'll post a recap at the end of each week. Following the event, we'll also post a list grouped by theme, uniting any Week 6 catchup posts with their group.
To participate, post to AO3 and/or Tumblr during Jan. 27-Mar. 9 (Eastern time), following the instructions below so that we can find your work, reblog it, and add it to the masterlist.
Strongly suggested—for your sake and ours! (for both AO3 and Tumblr)
To make sure we have the best chance of seeing and reblogging your work, and to help out your hardworking mods, please do submit this form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSe-mG_6FlK4Kx4ZTVhp960mo4NJyCtXEXGtH7Lds-QTDP0mJA/viewform
It will also be very helpful to us in getting your entries included properly on our masterlist!
Our team of mods are on the lookout for your entries. We do sleep occasionally. But if a day goes by and your post hasn't been reblogged, we may not have seen it. Make sure you fill out this form before getting in touch.
When posting on Tumblr
Please both tag us: @magiciansfanworksextravaganza And also please put the following two # tags among your first five tags: #MFEWelcomeHome #magiciansfanworksextravaganza
If you are sending separate entries from the same work (additional chapters, art, etc.) please make a separate Tumblr post for each individual entry, with a link to the specific chapter if you published on AO3. (More AO3 guidelines below.)
Please tell us which Week and Theme this is for (either the overall event theme, or one of the weekly themes). If you’re posting in Week 6, let us know if this is for a previous week’s theme, the overall theme, or is part of Welcome back to WIPs! (for continuations to existing WIPs that don’t match any theme—Week 6 only).
Before you post: Take a look at your mention for us. Is it a live link? Can you click @magiciansfanworksextravaganza and get to our page? If not, try editing your post. If it's an AO3 share, position your cursor at the very end of the post, hit enter to start a new line, and start typing @magiciansfanworksextravaganza. While you are typing, a box with our icon should pop up. Click on that suggestion to link to our page. If you don't see the box, it won't link. Make sure you're typing in Rich Text rather than HTML unless you know the code to mention someone.
When posting on AO3
Please add your work to our Welcome Home! AO3 Subcollection:
If this is a multi-chaptered work (either an existing WIP or a new work that will continue in further chapters), please include information in the Notes both at the start of the work and at the head of the relevant chapter about which chapter is part of this challenge.
Please also tell us which Week and Theme this is for (either the overall event theme, or one of the weekly themes). If you’re posting in Week 6, let us know if this is for a previous week’s theme, the overall theme, or is part of Welcome back to WIPs! (for continuations to existing WIPs that don’t match any theme—Week 6 only).
To post a new work, you can visit our AO3 collection and click "Post to Collection." To add your existing WIP, click "Edit," then under "Associations," "Post to Collections/Challenges," type "MFEWelcomeHome" and hit enter, then click "Post."
Please note: If you are adding your work via the Edit panel rather than posting to the collection from the actual collection page, when you type in the challenge name, AO3 is not going to offer it as an automatic selection. Nevertheless, as long as you type in MFEWelcomeHome and hit enter, AO3 will add your work to our collection.
Additional Useful Things
Welcome Home! on our blog
On the themed blog side of Magicians Fanworks Extravaganza, on the right side under Navigation, there's a direct link that takes you to the Welcome Home! instructions. Further down on the right side, you'll see Projects. Each challenge has its own box, with the icon for each challenge and a "Project Link." The Welcome Home! link will serve up everything we’re posting with the #mfewelcomehome tag. That includes everything we’re reblogging, as well as the challenge guidelines.
Welcome Home! AO3 Subcollection
Enjoy the works as they’re going up on AO3! (Remember, some creators, especially artists, may only post to Tumblr, so visit our home page, too.)
MFE Discord Server
https://discord.gg/NcBDD63uFg
Not a requirement! Good for brainstorming & chatting with fellow TM fanworks creators.
Have fun! The Welcome Home! challenge will go live and the AO3 collection will open as we enter January 27, 2025, Eastern time (i.e., as we cross midnight).
