2 Days until Amnesty Week, Aug. 11-17, 2025

For Amnesty Week, Magicians Fanworks Extravaganza reopens all previous challenges (except Queliot Week, which will be a special recurring event in its own right each June). We welcome fanworks of all types celebrating The Magicians (Lev Grossman/SyFy). The event will recur once a year in this timeslot.

Our first Amnesty Week opens in just two days! If you wanted to participate in any of our prior challenges, or just party with us, it's a good time! Please join us from August 11-17, 2025, as we reopen all previous events.

As many or few things as you wish to create are welcome, as long as they fit the event guidelines. Warm Up has a length restriction, but Welcome Home! does not. Both events have themes, but one choice for Welcome Home! allows new additions to existing WIPs that don't fit any other theme.

Amnesty Week takes place on AO3 and Tumblr. To participate, you don’t need to sign up, but we do recommend filling out a submission form for Amnesty Week to let us know you made something (please consult the guidelines, but here's the link for quick access: https://forms.gle/gyKUA9WrxtqYa3Wz7).

We have AO3 subcollections for each challenge, and we'll reblog your work here and gather it in our recap posts. We'll also add your work to the masterposts for the original events!

As always, new works and additions to existing WIPs are welcome, as are all types of fanworks (fic, art, edits, vids, cosplay, crafting, podfic, fanmixes, pinboards, moodboards, and more). If you wish to submit individual chapters of the same work as separate entries, that's totally valid! They could be for the same theme, or different ones.

In a nutshell (please see original guidelines for more info):

Micro fanwork event. Fic to about 1,000 words (drabbles, poems, flash); smaller pieces of art; shorter vids/edits, mini-fanmixes; a cosplay moment. Note: we’re a little flexible, but the upward word limit stops at 1,500 words. However: entries can present this in separate <1.5k chapters as needed.

Themes: Vibes that are warm, cozy, related to winter [event took place in December], being hot (in any sense of that word), warming up or preparing for a big event, just starting out in something like magic, etc.

Pick one of the following themes. Theme must make at least a cameo appearance but doesn’t need to be the main thrust; interpretation of the theme is up to the creator.

Available themes:

Overall event theme: Welcome Home

Week 1 theme: Home—What constitutes “home” to the characters? What do they think of “home,” good or bad?

Week 2 theme: “It’s been a long time”—It could be a long time since characters saw each other, or a long time engaged on a task like the mosaic. Special focus on celebrating The Magicians 3x05, “A Life in the Day”

Week 3 theme: Seasonal/holiday: Any! Doesn’t have to be an official celebration/mention of the holiday/season; feel free to provide “vibes” or “ambience” for the readers to enjoy in connection with that holiday/season (haunted house for Halloween; romance for Valentine’s Day, etc.). If the season or holiday is not specifically referenced in the content, please let us know which one it is.

Week 4 theme: Magical creature—A being from the show or books, or from mythology/folklore, or one you make up.

Week 5 theme: Returning after absence (or returning to being themselves).

Amnesty Week 2025

We will open for entries on Tumblr and AO3 at 12:01 AM (Eastern) on Aug. 11 and close at 11:59 PM (Eastern) on Aug. 17.

We'll post recaps a few days after the event closes. These will highlight everything created for Amnesty Week, as well as join the works to the original events by theme.

To participate, follow the instructions below so that we can find your work, reblog it, and add it to the recap lists.

If it's an AO3 share, position your cursor at the very end of the post, hit enter to start a new line, and start typing @magiciansfanworksextravaganza. While you are typing, a box with our icon should pop up. Click on that suggestion to link to our page. If you don't see the box, it won't link. Make sure you're typing in Rich Text rather than HTML unless you know the code to mention someone.

To post a new work, you can visit our AO3 collection and click "Post to Collection." Or, to add your existing WIP, click "Edit," then under "Associations," "Post to Collections/Challenges," type either "MFEWarmUp" or "MFEWelcomeHome" and hit enter, then click "Post."

Please note: If you are adding your work via the Edit panel in the fic, rather than posting a new work to the collection from the actual collection page, when you type in the challenge name, AO3 is not going to offer it as an automatic selection. Nevertheless, as long as you type in the collection name and hit enter, AO3 will add your work.

The first thing Quentin noticed when he woke up was that his room smelled like damp soot and not like the crackling fire that should have still been keeping his small room warm. - Cobblestone (I decided to go with just the first line of Chapter 1 for longer works, because otherwise almost this entire list would just be Cobblestone.)

Quentin was up with the sun. - Empty Nest

Once upon a time, for that’s how these things usually start, there was a beautiful young woman who wanted to see the world. - Straw for Gold (I debated leaving this one off the list, because it's from my old HP days, and I don't actually hold with that at all anymore. But I am still proud of ((some of)) my writing from those days, so ultimately, the writing is still there.)

Soft music, melancholy and lilting, fills the air, punctuated by the clicking of polished dress shoes. - Dancing in the Dark (Bonus for those who don't count HP, which, really, fair.)

So I've learned two things from doing this. The first is, I am terrible at tagging people, in large part because I don't even know who among my friends and acquaintances is still writing. So if you see this, please assume you are tagged and play. It's a wild free for all game of tag and everyone is now it!

Secondly, I am quickly learning that my SECOND (sometimes third) lines are where I seem to pack my punch. My first lines are dull. I need to work on this, because it should definitely come in the first lines, not the follow up.

I've changed this to: First paragraphs. But I highlighted the first line.

1. Eliot held Quentin tight on one side and clasped Bambi’s hand on the other, all of them sitting on their luggage, every member of their circle of friends touching. He felt—tense. It wasn’t just everything that might go wrong with this super-dangerous mission. He may have gotten a little paranoid about leaving Muntjac for too long, either—she was their flying home, and it wasn’t so easy to board or debark. That ship had saved his life and Margo’s several times over; he felt really attached to her.

A lot of shorty sentences in this lot (other than Kate and her crisis lmao but that's just cause of her vibes) which is very fun and interesting to me, and I think influenced by the fact that a lot of them are more poetic in nature tbh.
