If your WIP became a TV show, what would the theme song be like? Instrumental? A repurposed pop song? A specially-written song with lyrics that explain the premise? A five-second musical sting over the show logo?
#adventures in writing#if lily between worlds can count as a wip#then it would have a lightly dreamy yet upbeat pop song by a female singer#with thematically appropriate lyrics about learning who you are and finding your place in the world#as far as retellings go#both the tattercoats and goose girl retellings could have dreamy and faintly celtic instrumentals#over a series of pastoral and fairy tale images

Daily instrument — Cláirseach
The cláirseach or Irish harp is the traditional harp of medieval Scotland and Ireland. The cláirseach has a large soundbox, a curved neck, an out curved fore pillar, 30–50 heavy brass strings, tuned diatonically, and is plucked by fingernails. The cláirseach survived through the 11th–17th century, but then disappeared. In 1820 a modern version of the instrument was created. It was more lightweight, used gut strings, and could be played chromatically.

More Bajoran Headcanons
Archery and charioteering are traditional Bajoran sports associated with women
The preferred animal for chariot racing is the fabor, an animal with green horns. The lopp requires a specialized harness due to their neck spines, and verdanises are generally considered to have too delicate a constitution to pull most chariots (though they are ridden in races by single riders). Fabor also tend to be more fierce than both, making handling them during a race a greater act of skill.
Pre-Interplanetary travel Bajoran architecture had round foundations that gradually faded out of use for many, except in particularly windy locales where they ate still standard
Fasting is believed by some to have a magical/spiritual power, in that fasting against or in favor of an individual can curse or bless/sanctify them, respectively. Folkloric tales abound of a person refusing to eat in grief, and causing whoever aggreived them to fall ill, face misfortunes, or die.
The purpose of the death chant, and reason for it's lack resulting in a ghost, is that not performing grief would be considered a curse stating in its silence that the person did not live well, and is not worthy to enter the Temple.
Bajoran meditation, while not done solely for this purpose, is also said to potentially have magical/spiritual power. In stories it is portrayed that sufficient concentration generates heat, with heroes meditating in snow or icy waters and making them melt, warm, or even boil.
#Bajor#Ds9#Bajoran worldbuilding#Star Trek world building#The alternative title for this is 'paying homage to Nana Visitor being inspired by the idea of celtic warrior women' while portraying Kira#The archery thing isn't direct; it's based on the fact that the instrument we see a Vedek use for the call to prayer at one point is a#Small harp#AFAIK Celts used chariots more for moving around and you sometimes got javelins and slings but not archers

Do you enjoy research? Which fic of yours required the most research?
Hello! thanks for asking :)
(This is question #18).
Do you enjoy research?
It depends on the topic to be honest, but yes, I enjoy going down a weirdly specific rabbit hole sometimes, it's fun! None of the fics I've written required a massive amount of research, to be honest, I do this for fun and as long as it sounds superficially plausible, I'm satisfied.
Which fic of yours required the most research?
I think, ironically, it was the only modern AU story I've written, which is set in modern Brighton. I've been there before so that part was okay, but some things I looked up for this story were:
how long would it take to drive from Brighton to Glastonbury?
what does the M3 look like?
what's the name of a hospital in Glastonbury?
...and other such things (basically, I used Google Maps a lot).
Given that Merlin lived through 15 centuries, I also looked up some random historical events/facts. For example, I was looking for the name of a bottle of "nice" wine that someone might plausibly be able to acquire in 19th century France for a throwaway line, and discovered this bit of trivia:
In the book “Autour de La Lune” (“Around the Moon”) written by Jules Vernes in 1870, three men took a journey to the Moon and they celebrated their achievement with a bottle of Nuits-Saint-Georges. (x)
Apparently the Apollo 15 crew carried this wine into space, and that's also where the St. George moon crater gets its name from. (x)
I found this amusing, which is why Merlin returned from Calais "with a bottle of Nuits-Saint-Georges under his arm".
For another, canon-era story (WIP) I've watched quite a few HEMA swordfighting videos and read articles about fencing (mainly to get some ideas about the vocabulary) -- but to be honest 90% of what I've "researched" won't be referenced at all (nobody cares about the technical terms), and that's been the case with other fics. It's mainly just to get "the flavour" right.
📬 FANFIC WRITING ASKS
#also in the same modern au fic: merlin mentions a plane that “couldn't get 80 feet off the ground without crashing down”#-> the first plane involved in a fatal crash started nose-diving about 75 feet (23 m) in the air. interesting fact there for ya.#nobody cares about these things I just find it funny to sneak them in#writing a 500 words ficlet? sure. let me just google ancient celtic musical instruments first#and think about whether I should use the word “lyre” or “crouth” or “crowd” for half an hour. yes this *is* essential.#ask game#asks
