Biology, grade 7+, organelles and cell structure

Do Now:

Read the poem and answer the following questions, alone or with a partner.

What, if any, factual error(s) can you find in the poem?

If the mitochondria is the cellular equivalent of the biblical Eve, then which organelle would be the biblical Adam? Why?

Answers below the cut

Centrioles produce the microtubules that are like the puppet strings or highway system of the cell. They are unrelated to cell walls. Additionally, in case any students wish to nitpick, mitochondria is the plural of mitochondrion, and while they are typically used interchangeably, the last stanza treats the word like a singular entity instead of a plural.

Nucleus is the generally correct answer. However, a better answer would be the nucleoid, which is the prokaryotic equivalent to the nucleus. Since Eve was created from Adam's rib (or penis bone, as argued by some scholars), it's logical that the Adam organelle would also be prokaryotic, and therefore predate the first nucleus.

the centrioles rebuilt the walls whenever they grew weak and eve was known and loved by all as something quite unique:

(yeah, yeah - you try and use this line in a poem)

(gah. this paragraph killed the syllable counts. i was challented to fit the phrase "powerhouse of the cell" into it, and mitochondria had to fit somewhere. both of which were gonna be doozies. decided to put them back to back and break the scheme at the end.

Almost every "this thing I learned in grade school is useless in my everyday life" claim can be answered by the fact that grade school is meant to give you a general education, not a specialized one. It's supposed to teach you a little bit about everything so that you can get a sense about what you might be interested in. A future doctor won't know they're interested in medicine if they don't learn anything about biology in grade school. A future writer won't know they're interested in writing if they don't learn anything about literature in grade school. A future civic worker won't know they're interested in civics if they don't learn anything about history or government in grade school. So of course you'll end up looking back and thinking that some things you learned are useless.... because grade school isn't about you individually. It's about everyone, it's supposed to ensure everyone has a chance to explore their interests and have a solid foundation for their futures.

tbh an important part of my take on the 'don't be like Sentinel' question is that hours earlier D16 had very decidedly assumed leadership of the High Guard, after which any attempt at resolving his very understandable personal trauma via murder was also, on a wider affects-everyone/your-new-power-means-something scale, inherently going to count as a military coup.

So Naberius is the Shade of Life. Okay. Wow.

I've been obsessing over that "Heart of Naberius" mention since I learned that Naberius is also Cerberus in Ars Goetia (Wriothesley mention yippee 🥳). I kept thinking I was kind of reaching, maybe the devs just liked the name and didn't bother with the double meaning, but the oddities piled up:

Meropide is a "a nation within a nation with minimal interference from the divine" (Pantalone's words, from Cashflow Supervision); the biggest supplier of clockwork meka; underground (or underwater, same difference); a gathering place of "exiles"; and thematically/philosophically embodies the concept of rebirth. The similarities to Khaenri'ah had to be deliberate...right? Or does any underground society in Teyvat evolve to Khaenri'ah references the same way animals evolves into crabs 🤔😂

Darkgold Wolfbite. The self-corrosion. Is Wriothesley is a rifthound?!?! If you squint his burst kinda makes a weird spatial rift... okay even that is too far for me. Lol. But where there are rifthound references, there is Gold. Rhinedottir. THE woman of the hour.

A cryo wolf guy. Okay Andrius "Wolf of the North" reference.

But seriously even the Wingalet is related to Mondstadt. Or at least the Mondstadt weapon series the Widsith. (Which was apparently also referenced in a veryyy obscure hidden dialogue in the quest?)

AND THEN. This!!!!! It makes so much sense in hindsight. I keep thinking of Meropide and Cerberus/Naberius separately. I forgot about Egeria!!! Miss who was specifically crafted by the Shade of Life to replace the Heart of the Primordial Sea (aka the Hydro Dragon). Who then went on to create Meropide, specifically to watch over the Primordial Sea. Of course it makes sense that Meropide's symbol directly references Naberius!

I still don't think Wriothesley himself has much to do with most of this, except in the sense that he is literally fated for Meropide. This makes me sad to think about, but everything about this guy was shaped from the ground up to be the Warden, maybe even specifically to be the Warden during the Flood. So since he's a walking Meropide reference, which through Egeria is a Naberius reference... he just kind of inadvertently becomes a walking Naberius reference by proxy? Maybe it's over-complicated but I just feel like there's probably other stuff we can compare with his backstory and with Meropide itself to figure out what's the deal with Naberius and the Shades. Genshin likes to do this thing where they tell the same story over and over, just in different forms, to drive the cyclical narrative theme going on home. It wouldn't be too farfetched.

Now as a Neuviwrio shipper. OH BOY. As above so below right??? 😭😭😭 I specifically have this obsession with them, the way they always seem to be directly contrasting each other only oops! It turns out they're the same thing, only slightly different. You'd think they'd be at odds about their interpretation of Justice, only it seems like they get along well and Neuvillette specifically considers him trustworthy. You'd think the Palais and the Fortress would have some political tension, only the Palais is actually the Fortress's best business partner. You'd think Neuvillette, the Hydro Sovereign, would have nothing thematically similar to Wriothesley (mortal, Duke of the underworld)... except, as it turns out, both of their themes strongly reference Life!!

Endless and infinite waves of vibration lap upon the shores of our bodies. We float in a sea of frequencies as fish in those waters, and we are rarely if ever conscious of the fact. Instead we assemble a world by transforming those frequencies into a vision that exists in the uniqueness of our mind's eye only, and then we believe with great insistence that what we see is real, and deserving the stamp of "truth," without pausing to consider the alternative realities held equally dear by our fellow fish. How to pierce the veil and see what actually is, as opposed to the creations of our minds? I'm not even remotely sure to be honest! The mechanics of "seeing" guarantee that "how I see it" must be different than how another does. So perhaps "reality" is more of a composite to be assembled with the help of the whole school of us~ Or perhaps it is an alternative altogether different from anything a shared vision might come up with, given our capacity to witness it with our senses is ultimately inadequate. Either option is cause for humility. Just thinking out loud here!
