[Deeep breath. Clasps his hands together. Okay, control the nerd-out. Don't hold it in, don't go all out. Nerd-between. Be reasonable.] Right. So, have you heard of the Canadian Power Metal Band UNLEASH THE ARCHERS?

Super talented, but we aren't getting into that right now! We're getting into the - the duology concept albums of Apex and Abyss!! Apex is about a man of legend known only as Immortal. He's been cursed with the ability to win any battle no matter the odds, immeasurable power, and the inability to die. In any other hero story, that would be a blessing, yeah? He's an ancient warrior who can't die! But here's the catch... NO free will. None. He is a tool. Most of his life is spent in trapped stone, merged with the walls of a mountain cave. The only time he's awake is when he's summoned. He is puppeted to do as they demand and will immediately go back to sleep, alone in his mountain, the moment his quest is done. Apex opens with him awakening over a thousand years since his time! He immediately knows this is a bad summoning, like the fate of the world is at stake, but he tells himself there's no good or evil because it's not like he has a say in it, right? So he goes. He follows his Shadow Guide to the lair of The Matriarch. She needs him to gather her 4 sons she can murder them on the altar when the planets align in a blood cannibal sacrifice to gain untold power! You know... as you do. So he's off. I could go on about the sons, too, but the point is: First three? Absolutely awful. Take after their mother. Power-hungry and cruel. The fourth...? He's just a dad. Not a warlord, not a tyrant. He's a family man who's broken away from his dreadful family and is the only one brave enough to face his fate. He would rather spend his final moments comforting his son than pleading for his life, and to top it off, he treats Immortal like a person. It's the first time we see anyone treat him as anything other than a force of nature. And then... it ends. He has to bring the first friend he's ever made - and the three jerk-sons - to be killed. He does his job and is sent to be alone in his mountain for god knows how long. She promised to free him once she had the power, but she lied. She doesn't care, and he mentions that this isn't the first time he's been through this. Miserable ending. I was genuinely in a bad mood for days. I mean, I know it's all a story, but... but it felt very, erm... W-Well, anyways! The next album! He's summoned again, this time by the son of the youngest son! He's spent his WHOLE life swearing vengeance on Immortal, planning to summon him just to get revenge for taking his father away, but through his journey to find the summoning ritual, he's found out about the curse and he just... he just wants to help him. To free him. Oh, and also to defeat the Matriarch, who has conquered the entire GALAXY and enslaved all of humanity between albums. He wants to break the curse and defeat the Matriarch together as friends. He has an honest-to-God friend. They sing a song about it! And! And there's a song right after, and Matriarch tries to remind him that he's only a tool! She's all "Think you know this weapon in your hand? You are a fool; I am his only command." But the new friend sticks by him and- And there's a race through space, evil zombies, a sky-splitting and ground-rending battle between the equally-matched Immortal and Matriarch because her ritual made her unkillable, too. There's heartbreak! And action! And space stuff! And- And the last song of it all, Afterlife? Cry like a baby. Won't even lie. If you can follow this man's story through all of this, and hear him sing about having hope for his own future and excitement at having choices for once in his bloody life - if you can hear that and NOT tear up, you are heartless. It has a classical music part that sounds right out of Lord of the Rings, for chrisesake! He never has to be trapped in his mountain or follow an order ever, ever again! Two hours of albums honestly have as much weight to them as a full book series. BEST ALBUM(s) OF THE PAST DECADE!!!

shout out to my second oldest sister for changing her mind last second on where to spend Christmas 🙃 — everyone was gathering at my place which was fun, my oldest sister even joked at the lack of chairs stating that whomever sits first gets dibs and the rest of us have to eat in the floor 🤣🤣 oh well — as much as it bothered us, we didn't make a big deal about it for the sake of the WHOLE FAMILY and we made the most of it!!
