Going to be honest, I don't think they ever explored nor tried to frame anything to their friendship falling out.
The most they reference to Cedric and Roland being friends in their adulthood is Sofia encouraging Cedric to spend time with Roland.
"It'll be like two friends spending a whole afternoon together."
"I bet my dad would love to have a friend to see the exhibit with." "And I shall try to be that friend."
Quotes like that are promoting the idea that Cedric could win back Roland's trust with Sofia reminding him that they used to be friends and still could.
But they don't work out at first.
It's pretty rough to see Roland during the episode. He isn't completely justified in treating Cedric so harshly, but it's not like he doesn't have his reasons. It's like you said about Roland not having forgiven him yet. But those sparks of hope when they were at the exhibit and Cedric tried winning him back showed there was still something in Roland that still appreciated Cedric. A soft side to him that he can't bring himself to display once he assumes Cedric is behind stealing Grimhilde's crown.
At best, he gives a chance to his advances, and at worst, he gets furious at what seems to be Cedric attempting to steal the crown.
In a way, Roland has become just as harsh as Goodwyn and Cordelia. This all traces back to Cedric's trauma and how he believed getting back at the people who hurt him would make him happy when what he really needed was to be treated kinder. He needed the respect and trust of his family and peers, and by being blindsighted by revenge, he lost someone who would've been more understanding had he not caused him to lose faith.
This is all to say if there's anyone to blame for getting in the way of repairing their relationship, it's Wormwood.
Out of anything that made Roland mistrust Cedric the most, it was believing Cedric to be behind stealing the crown.
It was Wormwood wanting to continue serving evil that led him to betray Cedric's wishes to become good.
That led to Roland doubting that Cedric had changed.
That led to "the crown is mind!" Scene.
I'm sorry, but it really annoys me how the episode 'In Cedric We Trust' acted like Cedric and Roland were always super close and that it was Cedric's betrayal/attempt to take over the kingdom that destroyed their childhood friendship.
It makes the from-out-of-nowhere reveal (in 'In Cedric We Trust') that they were super close as kids all the more random and clumsy.
Like, the childhood "Incident" that permanently destroyed Cedric's reputation and relationships (including with Roland)- which was already revealed in 'Through the Looking-Back Glass', and came out before 'In Cedric We Trust'- was a separate matter from Cedric's betrayal. Roland always held Cedric in disdain because of his total lack of trust in his competence in magic (but he still trusted his actual loyalty), but Cedric's betrayal also destroyed Roland's trust in his loyalty, only further ruining the bond they once shared (and their working relationship before Cedric's betrayal) instead of being the cause of it like 'In Cedric We Trust' seemed to imply.
In fact, if Cedric's freezing of the royal family and attempt to seize the throne hadn't still weighed so heavily on Roland's mind- if Cedric had never committed treason in the first place- then Roland likely would have reacted much more to the shocking revelation in 'The Looking-Back Glass' that the Incident was never Cedric's fault and that his reputation/relationships were unfairly destroyed for no reason. Roland would have felt much more remorseful. But he couldn't bring himself to acknowledge that he was wrong about Cedric being a bungler all those years, much less apologize, because his lack of trust in him for his treason was still too great and made him stubborn... despite what he already knew about how hurt and angry Cedric always felt about his treatment at everybody's hands ever since childhood, when Cedric revealed to Roland why he tried seizing the throne after the guards seized him in 'Day of the Sorcerers'; at Sofia and even Miranda's reasoning, he even actually agreed/acknowledged that Cedric couldn't have had it easy and that maybe they should treat him better.
I hc that after Roland's trust in Cedric was restored at the end of 'In Cedric We Trust' and their friendship began to be mended, Roland's faith in his magic was also fully restored (as indicated when he asked Cedric if he had a spell to fix the damaged landscape, then praised him on a job well done), and that shortly after that episode Roland actually apologized for his part in Cedric's lifelong pain. Like, that's when the realization and remorse for all he went through hit him.
Anyway, it was handled sloppily. But that was par for the course for the writing in most of season 4.

john price is a man incredibly high up in the chain of command of your company. he does a little walking tour of the buildings during crew appreciation weeks. helps humble down his image and he gets to have some meaningful conversations. sometimes even gets to meet particularly wonderful people.
he spots you, the sole person whose eyes are glued to their computer screen, in a sea of employees who are gawking at him. can hear the steady typing from your mechanical keyboard, your eyes flittering across the screen. he pauses a little too long, prompting laswell to repeat herself to the group before they move along.
but he makes sure not to be too far away, keeping you in his peripheral. notices how you don't even bother to spare a look in his direction. even when talking to team members that would place john directly in your sight, your eyes only focus on them. not him.
you were damn good at your job. the color-coded whiteboard behind you, filled with deadlines and application information, confirms it. funny too, if the little bouts of laughter that escape your team's cluster are anything to go by. he wonders what pitch your voice carries, just out of reach for it to bless his ears. wonders what it'd take for you to look and grant him a smile.
he doesn't have to wait long. your mouth splits into a bright smile and for a second john wonders if you're glowing. but the smile's not for him. it's directed at a coworker, who, for john's sake, is anything but quiet. he can hear just how thick he lays the praise for a job well done.
john watches the transformation that takes place as his words land. your soft easy-going smile widening, pushing your cheeks further up. you immediately perk up, back straightening, shoulders pushed back, and leaning forward in the direction of your coworker.
oh. oh.
john can feel something warm beginning to pool at the bottom of his stomach. he cracks a knuckle before shoving his fists into his pockets, lest he does something that lands him in HR.
he'll keep this tidbit with him for the next time he sees you. just so he can let you know how much of a good job you're doing.
maybe even get a reward.

very self-indulgent thoughts today about 141 x reader who isn’t just white, who like your hair (because my dumbass gave myself a chemical haircut with bleaching). something all other partners have if not disliked, been annoyed by the amount of hair care you devoted your time to.
gaz has female relatives, he knows not to just touch your hair or interrupt your schedule for it, but he loves to watch you, perched on the edge of your tub. he’ll help you do your hair if you ask, but sometimes just the closeness of watching you is all he needs. he’ll happily let you help him take care of his hair, even.
johnny does not have an once of control — johnny touches your hair all the fucking time and sometimes you have to swat his hands away. he can’t help it, he just loves the way it feels between his fingers and the way he can smell your conditioner, the soft edges of your scent. he has the most dexterous fingers, though, practically begs to help you because he knows he can help. just let him help, hen. (but if you give him an inch, he'll take a mile and you will never have a moment of peace.)
simon takes it as an honor that you let him sit with you, it took a while for that possibility to pop up and he's not losing out on more time with you. he’ll braid your hair for you, he’s around to help you if you need it. when you’re sleeping, he’ll twine his fingers in your hair — but has 5000% gotten a strand stuck in an unknown split nail, and yanked it, and woken you up. man learned to file the edges of his nail very quickly.
price keeps everything in stock for you. low on a product? no you’re not, he restocked when he went to the shop for lighter fluid. he’ll help you make a whole evening of doing your hair, a nice relaxing time. he only touches your hair when you tell him it’s okay unless you’ve already okayed it for a night because he respects you.
there’s more that could be said but my brain is mush

That would be calling his parents ugly too because he takes the same physical traits as them. This is a joke post, but people tend to forget how much people respect his father Goodwyn and wouldn't call his son ugly because Cedric is seemingly "an extension of him that shares similar features except for being able to do magic as great as him". For being the best sorcerer the kingdom has ever had, of course they wouldn't insult Goodwyn's son's appearance. That's the man who saved the king 9 and a half times, no way they calling Cedric ugly.
But they would put down his son for not being as great as him. People want the next generation to be as great as the last, if not better. The societal pressure for Cedric to be as great as Goodwyn was too great for him to accomplish, making people hate him even more for his shortcomings.
It's even worse when Goodwyn could've defended his son and tried to raise him up to be as great as him, but he had a similar mentality that warped into him believing he was never going to be ready for the responsibilities of the family wand, merely accepting that he would always have to correct Cedric from his lack of faith in him.
That's what Goodwyn has going: he doesn't believe in Cedric. Sure, believing is only part of the process, and so him focusing his efforts to make Cedric improve without being confident in his abilities set Cedric up for failure from the very start.
Also, ugliness is commonly associated with evilness and immorality, as inaccurate as it really is. However, people were focused on him being incapable rather than being evil. Sure, the incident would've painted him in a bad light, but I believe the narrative shifted to him not being good at magic, which would've explained how even when Cedric apologizes for said incident, people hold his mistakes higher for it being caused by his carelessness and inability to do magic rather than a moral failing.
Point is, people just see Cedric as bad at magic rather than bad as a person, therefore never calling him ugly.
@shychick-52 @bettathanyou
they call cedric a bungler a disgrace and a disappointment because they cannot call him ugly pass it on

never in my entire life will i recover from the fact that this is not ed coaching stede on how to be a better pirate captain, this is ed trying to help stede feel more like a pirate captain.
ed has full faith in stede’s captaining abilities. one of his favorite things about stede is that his leadership style is something completely different, something that inspires loyalty out of love and compassion instead of from fear and awe. ed has zero criticisms about stede’s capabilities as a pirate captain.
but stede is saying he doesn’t feel like he’s the captain. and ed’s strategy to help stede feel more like a captain is to get stede to boss him around in a commanding voice.
and then, after sowing the seeds of his own sexual torment, ed says he wants to TAKE IT SLOW????
eddie. babygirl. my beloved. why are you doing this to yourself.

Cedric's redemption arc is just that: an arc. It does not happen immediately. Him caring for Sofia is something that develops over time. Even after Cedric's Apprentice, he still goes on to try taking Sofia's amulet as well as try other means of taking over the kingdom. For all intents and purposes, Cedric is still a flawed individual throughout the series, and to ignore that by saying he was always good is a disservice to his complex character.

i wanna rant about mouthwashing haters for a second
the most common gripe with the game that i see is that it lacks a level of depth, and that it refuses to go beyond surface level exploration of the things its about, which just isn’t true
i know “media literacy” has become a buzz word that people just throw around a lot now, but this is a perfect example of it, and the lack there of
the dead pixel representing how overlooking one thing can ruin the whole, the mouthwash representing unchecked corruption, curly’s maiming is literally irony in its textbook definition (i keep seeing people complaining that it sucks because they “made im disabled as a punishment” but no! that literally is NOT what happened)
maybe im looking too deep into everything, but this game is just so good and i cant stand when people refuse to look deeper into it and then complain
if you look at everything from a baseline standpoint, of course everything you consume will be subpar

Cap: I never got to ask him how he got the scar on his face...
Julian: Grenade, probably.
Cap: *annoyed* And what makes you the authority?
Julian: *shrugs* Must have been a pretty common injury. Africa, you said? My uncle Toni came home with a scar like that. Mom always said he was so self conscious about it that he never got married. Didn't have the heart to tell her that her brother was perfectly happy living with his "male best friend"...
Cap: Did you say "uncle Toni"?
Julian: I know, I know. But it's not your chap.
Cap: Oh. Right.
Julian: Yeah, his name was Anthony Havers.
Cap: THAT IS MY CHAP, JULIAN!
Julian: Oh. Why did I think your man's last name was Cartwright?
Cap: BECAUSE YOU WEREN'T LISTENING TO MY STORY PROPERLY!!!
Julian: That's fair.
Cap: I WILL STRANGLE YOU, SIR!
Julian: What, for knowing your crush? I can get Alison to get some of my family photos for you to look at, you know.
Cap: YOU ABSOLUTE- I would appreciate that.
Kitty: Does that mean Julian and the Captain are related?
Thomas: Only by marriage.
