okay, since Ranni is a capital H capital F High Fantasy Princess, the dramatic proposal scavenger hunt she sends the Tarnished on is *probably* Carian tradition, especially since the item description for the Discarded Palace Key says it "opens a treasure chest passed down to Carian Princesses."
Which actually just makes it funnier that to give her the ring, the Tarnished has to go through: the family dog, Ranni's senile mother, the traps Ranni has left to GUARD her senile mother, the godforsaken lake of rot ON FOOT, an enormous, creepy, human faced magic scorpion from space, and her pet dragon.
While her dad just had to go to confession and pay some indulgences to marry her mother.

I'm not gonna post my full write-up, but this was a really enlightening listen and clocks in at about 20 minutes if you want to give it a whirl. Here are a few of my favourite tidbits from Albert Kim and Jabbar Raisani's commentary on the official trailer.
Tumblr media
They try to visit lots of locations because Avatar is a road show and they want to show the expansiveness of the world
Kim loved the eco message of the original and wants to convey it in the adaption as well
Raisani says Appa is a core member of the team who they wanted to bring to life as much as any of the humans
Tumblr media
"Katara is the character who really recognises Aang for who he is, and that is a symbol of hope. And the return of the Avatar for her means that hope has returned to a world that essentially has lost hope for the last hundred years. She's the first one to see that, and over the course of the season, we're gonna see that message of hope spread throughout the world."
The juxtaposition of Katara's POV and Sokka's POV and their clashing opinions is an important dynamic especially in the beginning of the season and informs who they are as brother and sister and their journey coming together to support Aang.
Tumblr media
They chose to choreograph and shoot the first Agni Kai, which they describe as the defining moment of Zuko's life, because you understand a lot more of Zuko's character when you see it in real life.
The Agni Kai goes to the core of Zuko's story. "What did his father really want? Does he want him to succeed and find the Avatar and come back? Is he using him against his sister? What is really required of him or desired of him by his father, and then is he going to do that or is he going to do what he thinks is right?"
Tumblr media
Momo is a digital creature. They use a puppet so the actors know what they're doing.
It was important to them that Sokka not just be the butt of the joke but have his own humour
"Despite the burden that all these characters are facing and the fact that the fate of the world rests in their hands, they are just kids, y'know? Aang's a goofy twelve-year-old and Katara and Sokka aren't much older and we wanted to make sure that we conveyed that, because that's a really important part of not just the characters but of the story. And if they are gonna be these harbingers of hope, as we said, they needed to express that through their kind of childlike sense of optimism."
Tumblr media
Commander Zhao is one of the main villains of the first season and primary antagonist for our heroes. Ken Leung brought humanity and ambition to the character. We see his ego swell over the course of the season as he gets more and more power and comes closer and closer to capturing the Avatar.
Tumblr media
Suki will talk about how when you're not a bender, you have to be better than the benders. The Kyoshi Warriors have refined their combat to the point that they can more than hold their own against firebenders.
Sokka and Suki will have a "beautiful journey" in finding commonality in not being benders and what it means within this world.
Tumblr media
While Kyoshi can exist in the real world, Omashu can only exist in fantasy, so they built it from scratch. Kim and Raisani would have conversations about the colour of the rooftops and mechanics of the delivery system. They want Omashu to be a city that even new audiences will look at and think, "Wow, that somewhere I want to go to. That's a place I want to visit."
They tried to do practical wherever possible. They'd start with actors and everything around them, build out as far as they possibly can, then extend from there. For the shot of Aang flying over Omashu they started with actors on rigs, filmed on green screen, then did a full digital shot.
They call the sequence, "The Joy of Flight." Like the animated series, they have scenes that are just fun. Aang and Teo could fly from Point A to Point B but they want to make things engaging and fun to watch.
Tumblr media
All actors doing bending had to go through extensive training before shooting. The core cast did a six week bootcamp where they had to learn all four bending techniques.
Utkarsh Ambudar (King Bumi) was eager to do everything himself. While they did use stunt performers for parts, he was always down to do another take despite being exhausted.
Tumblr media
The Avatar State is the ultimate power, to be treated seriously, so they don't have Aang going into it as much as the original first season so it felt special and communicated that Aang could only access it in specific circumstances. They've tweaked the rules for when and how he can access Avatar State.
"There are certain things we are going to modify, going to change, and hopefully fans will see that it's all for the good of the story as a whole and in dimension-alizing the story and bringing it from one medium to the other."

Hey guys. Time to partake in fandom discussion. I’ve seen a lot of discussion (and honestly, mainly bashing) around Vallamir and how The Hex fans interpret him and I have some thoughts about it.
I am more than willing to accept that Vallamir was written to be misogynistic (dare I say even a bit creepy) if we can also accept this aspect of him was poorly written in canon.
Let’s look under the cut to see what I mean.
The narrative I see is that Vallamir is constantly being a misogynistic prick, and even preying on Chandrelle, on purpose. That he’s deliberately being Gross instead of just gross. That he is meant to represent how women are objectified in fandom spaces with him being the person who only sees female characters as sexy lamps to lust after.
Various lines of dialogue are cited as being his creepy factor on display; let’s take a look at all of the examples I’ve seen used against him and a fourth bonus one to try and fully understand the picture
-“XOXO, Vallamir”: The throwaway blurb on the Tome of Vallamir. People interpret this as flirting to Chandrelle’s dismay, but I’ve seen plenty of people use this in non-romantic contexts, much less forced ones. It’s a common signature. I’m sure Vallamir just thought the funniest juxtaposition was writing an entire evil spell book and then signing it off with “hugs snd kisses”
-“You can’t say you didn’t enjoy my company”, this one has the most weight as a creepy line. Creeps use this rhetoric all the time, always on about “hey! Nuh uh! You actually DID like me!”. Vallamir could be using this in that deliberate context. He could also be saying that it’s a slap to the face to have their business relationship go to Hell. He could be saying it to try and get the last laugh in a shitty situation. Him being a dick rather than a prick. Perhaps even his vain attitude shining as he’s once again trapped without escape, this time doomed to be alone since it’s a tube and not someone else’s head. He shouldn’t have said that regardless, but the line is more grey than black and white
-“Looks like we’re going to be roommates”: Mid-tier joke. It’s a mid joke. Any nonchalant character who is about to be trapped with someone else in any context of entrapment is going to make a corny “oo we’re roommates!” line.
-The bonus is his excitement over Chandrelle using the tome. I can give grace and say that “heh, you actually used it” can be read in some “fuckboy” “heh, you actually called me back 😏” allegory. However, it can also just be seen as poorly worded excitement over Chandrelle making their alliance official.
Vallamir- in these discussions- is deliberately being a sexist pig. And yet all of these lines- merely three and an item description out of all of his dialogue- aren’t completely black and white. What seems to happen is that Vallamir talks out of his ass. He’s a prick who doesn’t think about the double meaning to his words, and ends up saying things that can be taken the wrong way, and he’s not one to care enough about being socially acceptable.
Chandrelle dislikes him from the start NOT because of any objectification he’s doing, but because he constantly cuts EVERYONE off, farts all over the place, and is overall a gross jerk. He’s not a Gross jerk. And if the intention WAS to make him a Gross jerk, more should’ve been done to make this clear.
You can imagine him saying all of these lines to a male protagonist. If Lazarus was in Chandrelle’s position, nothing except Val’s signature greeting would be changed (“hey girl” to “hey boy”). He’d still say they’re going to be roommates. He’d still say “Oh so you actually used it!”. He’d still make a comment about Laz missing his company. He’d still even put the XOXO! If his hollow lines can apply entirely to a male character (and, dare I say, be taken as “Oh he’s flirting with Laz! 😳😏” to straight up “toxic Yaoi” between the two and lead to shipping. People already do this to them in these circles where I see discussions about this happen.) then there’s nothing uniquely sexist about it, it just has more unfortunately wording when paired up with a female character. Vallamir needs to learn to keep his mouth shut, but he’s not deliberately being Gross.
I’m not saying he needs to look into the camera and say “I don’t see women as equals, and also I want Chandrelle carnally”, but there are ways to make this subtext more pronounced, add more dialogue that is deliberately, unabashedly sexist. Have Chandrelle express specific annoyance towards the XOXO comment. Have him make a pass at Chandrelle during their one-on-one talking sessions instead of leaving it at “Hey girl”. Have him make a comment about “finally having some alone time” either during the first one-on-one talk or when he’s about to be put in her head. You can still imply this factor of him without saying the quiet part out loud and without having, honestly, nothingburger lines to showcase it
Just to make a further comment about the subtext; the notion that Vallamir was flirting with Chandrelle (and that they were even romantically involved if you interpret it that far) was completely overlooked and ignored for years in favor of headcanoning Val as gay and hooking up with Irving behind the scenes, based entirely on the “Say hi to Vallamir for me” line. Which, in context, has no queer undertones. It’s Irving playing mind games with Chandrelle and further threatening her since he couldn’t beat sense into her. This also ignores the blatant fact that Irving also harshly punishes Val for the SOL incident by putting him in Chandrelle’s head, a fate that isn’t good for either party. But hey. Who am I to judge Yaoi.
TL;DR: Fandom extremism towards this topic (insisting that Vallamir is a creep and that if you don’t read the text this way, you’re illiterate and foul) needs to have extremism in the text to match, and nothing in the Hex is up to snuff with this Intentional Creep!Vallamir image. If the fandom is still debating this, then clearly it isn’t black and white, and I think that how poorly this possible subtext was implemented into the story needs to be acknowledged by the side who bashes others for their writing and reading. Basically everyone-both sides! Though mainly the bashers- ends up rewriting this possible creep factor anyways, so I honestly don’t understand why it’s such a point of contention.
TL;DR 2: All Vallamir did was fart, say one- maybe even two- things that are harder to see as not creepy in some fashion whether he as a character intended it or not, have a consistent theme of being trapped, and was chill asf (a jerk) snd y’all hated him. He did all that shit but he wasn’t being a misogynist on purpose. DONT free my man!

I sent this to Ems too (yes I legit did a copy paste 😂) cause I love how both your brains work but 🧅s on SKZ and feminine coded undergarments, if they were to wear them. Like we know Chan would wear black panties, but would they be basic cotton? Who like to keep it simple and functional most days, who wears the pretty ones every day and why is it Felix, do they have special pairs for special things, who just likes wearing them and who gets turned on by wearing them.
Bonus questions that you can ignore if this is too long: since we’re assuming they all do it for the above, MTL to actually wear them. Oh, and what happens when their SO finds out.
me and ems discussed male skz wearing fem coded underwear btw im not sure if u wanted fem skz but we ran with it. i’ll just talk abt them in age order then say who i think would do it the most <3
chan: chan would be the type to wear basic black cotton panties. he’d like the way they hugged his length just right and it would turn him on so bad to see his precum leak through the fabric!! he’d send you pictures of it too, pulling his trousers down to show you that he’s naughty enough to wear them to the studio with a “So embarrassing… heh”
minho: oh he’s wearing a red lacy pair just to wind you up. he’d make sure you can just see the waistband over his joggers when he’s practicing, or he’d ‘stretch’ with his arms above his head so you can see the colour against his milky skin. he’s a menace. let him fuck you with them pulled just under his balls and he’ll never let you forget it, all “my little cat likes me in these, hm?”
changbin: omg so me and ems discussed the type of panties with like… cross detailing on the back. that’s SO changbin!! something pretty that hugs his perky ass just right and accentuates the shape of it? yeah. smack his ass and watch it jiggle and he’ll whine for you. he’s veryyy into body worship in my mind so
hyunjin: strikes me as a satin or silk pair kinda guy. like a pair of white satin panties with little frills on the edges, so delicate against his skin… that’s very hyune coded to me. let him sprawl those long legs apart with some white thigh highs on too and he’s yours
jisung: g-string. like straight up filthy g-string and he’ll have a plug stuffed in his hole too for you to find. i’m telling you he’s diagnosed filthy like he will wear a cute little bralette over those sexy tits for you too, let you call him whatever you want. tell him he’s a bad little princess and he’ll whine so pretty for you.
felix: soft pink lace panties!! soft pink lace panties with his leaking cockhead justttt coming out of the waistband and just as pink as his underwear. definitely the matching set type of guy too!! wants to be pampered when he’s like this, treat his balls like precious jewels in the pretty fabric 🩷
seungmin: i struggle to see seungmin doing this BUT then i thought of him in some form of lingerie like a basque or corset or something and… yeah. i think seungmin would get off on fucking you dumb while he’s dressed like a whore, the juxtaposition of it would send him WILDDD
jeongin: i think he’s most likely to do it in such a joking, teasing way. like definitely some satin because he likes the way it feels over his balls, but he WILL make fun of you for enjoying it too.
the members i think that are most likely to do this are changbin, hyunjin, felix, jisung. our subby boys <3

Right side of the bed
🎂: ROTTMNT
🧁: Donnie
🍫: Mikey , Leo Ft. Raph
Summary: Donnie is in a very good mood and has a minor case of the giggles for some reason . Mikey and Leo decide to figure it out and maybe improve it even more..
A/N: I love the idea of tickling someone because they’re in a good mood almost as much as I love cheer up tickles and that’s saying something.
Right side of the bed
“Good morning, D!” Mikey cheered while making breakfast as Donnie walked in.
“Morning Angelo!” He replies , equally chipper.
‘……wait just a second! Donnie’s never this cheery in the mornings??!’
“Oo! Something smells good! What’s on the menu today?”
Okay, this was really weird. Mikey’s brain stutters for a moment.
“Oh! It’s pancakes! With chocolate chips!” He informs once his mind catches up.
“Fun! I bet they’ll be delicious, like always!” Donnie giggles .
….Donnie giggled. What the hecking heck?
Mikey kinda just stares in shock at Donnie’s smiling face.
Donnie giggles again. “Hello~ is anybody home?” And waves his hand in front of the others eyes.
“Oh, uh, yeah.” Mikey finished making breakfast as Leo and Raph come downstairs.
“I smell chocolate chip pancakes!” Raph calls as he sits down.
“I hope we’re not to choco-late to get some!” Leo cracks a joke with a silly smirk .
Raph groans, Mikey grins, but Donnie giggles.
“Pfft. That was silly.”
Leo gasps(maybe a little dramatic but that’s in character)
“did you just laugh? At one of my jokes? Who are you and what have you done to my brother?”
“Heheh, I’m an eeviilll imposter ~,” Donnie starts with a fake ghost voice , “No but seriously, Nardo, it’s just me.”
“Okay, this is really weird , what is up with you?”
Donnie laughs again. “Guess I woke up on the right side of the bed? I’m just kinda feeling life today Leon, don’t sweat it.”
“Moving on!” Mikey exclaims from the kitchen “Breakfast is ready!”
As the brothers eat, Leo makes more jokes, capitalizing on the fact that his brother was so giggly. He loved making people laugh.
After a joke that landed particularly well, Donnie just full on burst into belly laughter.
“Hahaha! Nardohoho! I’m trying to eat!” He half complains as he clutched his sides and wipes a small tear from his eye.
“Hey! It’s not my fault that I’m so funny.”
“Heh. Dork.”
At that sentiment, Leo does a fake offended gasp, in another form of comedy.
It works. Donnie just laughs harder.
“Oh, you should see your face! Ahahah!”
After breakfast, Leo decides he’s gonna make Donnie laugh in a different way. He tells the others(minus Donnie) and Mirky agrees to help. Raph says he’ll just watch, they don’t want to overwhelm the soft shell.
So, when Donnie comes back(he had been getting a drink) the two of them pounce.
“Whahat are you twoho doihing, huhuh?” Donnie laughs out as he’s tackled by them.
“We’re making you laugh!” Mikey pips up, before lightly poking at Donnie’s sides.
“Pffthehe! Youhou whehere alreheheady Dohinhihng thahat youhou gohoofbahalls!”
Donnie wouldn’t admit it, but it felt kinda nice. It was improving his already happy feelings.
He was glowing with joy, only bright smiles here!
“Yeah, but we wanted to do it better, Mister giggles~.” Leo teases as he joins in the attack.
Donnie didn’t say anything, he was just full of laughter!
“Looks like someone got a one-way ticket to giggle city~” Leo coos.
Donnie didn’t even respond. Normally he wouldve replied with snark or a simple “shut!” But this time, he just basked in the feeling.
“Are you having fun~” Mikey sings
“Mmmahayhahaps!” He quietly says through his laughter.
All three brothers internally ‘awwed’ at that.
Donnie was indeed, having fun. He didn’t even protest because he was already in a good mood before. Now he just felt amazing .
His smile seemed to glow, his eyes were shut tight as giggle after giggle fell out of his mouth.
The others all watched in awe at Donnie’s generally happy juxtaposition.
Leo continued to make jokes while tickling his twin, increasing the amount of laughter pouring from him even more.
It was a great situation! Everyone was having a good time!
When the two attackers stopped, they let Donnie catch his breath and got him a glass of water.
After he recovered, Donnie just smiled and laughed a little at his own thought before reciting it aloud,
“Now I really feel like I woke up on the right side of the bed.”

Hi! Do you think RWBY as a story is inconsistent in tone? It is a criticism I keep seeing around? But what exactly means to have tonal inconsistency? Can you give me an example?
Nope.
I'm actually surprised to read this. Maybe because I'm on the outskirts of the fandom, but I really would not have put "tonal inconsistency" in like, a top 10 list of things I thought people might label a flaw of RWBY's. It had honestly never occurred to me.
I'd actually call RWBY extremely tonally consistent, which is hard to maintain over 9 volumes and counting.
I'm curious if these posts elaborated at all about how or what makes it feel tonally inconsistent--are there examples? Because I can't think of one. Since I don't know, I'm going to have to speculate.
Is it about fairy tale stories dealing with death? Because every fairy tale deals with death; that's kind of the central core of the vast majority of fairy tales.
Is it because this volume certainly contained RWBY's darkest episode ever? Because it did, but the descent to the underworld and meeting with the goddess is a part of the heroine's journey. Stories always get darker before they get better. Plus, I don't see how anyone could think that the volume wouldn't get very dark considering we just tackled genocide and the sunshine character died.
Tumblr media
I also think that Volume 9 has been extremely clear since the first teaser way back in 2021 that it would deal with Ruby's mental health. The opening line is "you should never have been born." Ruby then has a literal panic attack. She faints in horror when she's told about her friend dying.
That's just episode 1.
I guess people might be thrown by the juxtaposition of simplified life, which is the essence of the Ever After, with a complex topic like mental health? But I actually think that's quite brilliant. When you're extremely mentally unwell, which I have been before, things do seem to paradoxically become simpler even as the complexity overwhelms you. Things can seem black and white. Good and bad. And you? You're bad.
Idk, no one's experience is exactly the same, but to me it rang honest. It's fine if others felt differently.
Was it about mixing humor and dark topics? But like most stories do that. I mean, going back to damn Shakespeare, at likes 45% of each of his tragedies are dick jokes. The Bard loved a dick joke. It did not even have to be a good dick joke for the Bard to love it and include it in literature to be read by billions. I mean, I'm slightly hyperbolizing about the percentages, but you literally have Hamlet lamenting about going insane and contemplating suicide in one of the most haunting soliloquies in the English language (Act 3 scene 1's "To Be or Not To Be..." ) and then making numerous dick jokes in the very next scene (Act 3 scene 2). Even when it's all gone to the grave (heh) in Act 5, Hamlet takes time to hold up a jester's skull and joke about "alas, poor Yorick."
Like, yes, there are jarring ways to incorporate humor with tragedy. I don't think RWBY is doing that, though. The last episode had some genuinely heartwarming moments of realization (the paper pleasers) and tension, and then we had Cat!Neo still being a complete cat and lolling about like "Oh HEY GUYS." (The cat is hilarious, and they've always been like this.)
The entirety of Volume 9 has dealt with grief. Even the fight with the Red Prince is the prince throwing a tantrum mingled with grief.
Idk, stories do generally progress. They go from good to bad to good to bad to worse to how is this even worser to okay there's some hope to catharsis. If you can't connect the dots and see the progression, that's tonal inconsistency. If you can, and you absolutely can with RWBY not just in Volume 9 but the entire show as a whole, then... it's not tonally inconsistent.
The theme of identity has been present from the beginning of the show. Ruby looking at a grave and hence dealing with grief is one of the founding images of the entire series. To fully explore death, characters generally have to potentially end up there at some point. That Ruby would wonder whether or not she should have been born is obvious from the first minute of this season. Her spiral has gotten worse and worse, but if you paid attention, you could see it happening.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Again, the show began as a boarding school story with some pretty dark themes (abusive relationships, parental abandonment, parental death). That the darker stuff becomes explored more fully is pretty par for the course. Even like, again, Harry Potter gets progressively more dark. So do the Avengers movies. It's like, normal.
Idk, to me saying RWBY is tonally inconsistent for any of these reasons sounds like saying, I don't know, Othello is tonally inconsistent because the first scene has Othello and Desdemona standing up against bigotry for their love and their marriage is not annulled; therefore the play should end in the defeat of racism and love conquering all. Things change. The seeds of what will happen, the ugliness of racism and the limits of love and reality of misogyny are all present even in that opening scene, and unfortunately they consume the characters.
When I think tonal inconsistency, I think of, I don't know, the ending of Tokyo Ghoul, which thematically contradicted the entire 200+ chapters and 1.5 mangas leading up to it. Things that were framed as negative were suddenly framed as positive. I also think of BNHA, which, while I do think maintains its optimistic/hopeful superhero tone, does sometimes switch the framing and tone around certain characters (Hawks, Endeavor).
So yeah. RWBY has flaws for sure, but I just don't think this is one of them.

C2E69 - The Kings Cage - rewatch reaction
The episode that should have been NiceTM, and was not.
Whyyyy are the subtitles so fucked for this episode? They’re covering Travis’s face! I’m guessing it’s because of the PC icons that showed up. Wait, is this the first time that this has happened??? *checks previous episode again* Oh man, I’m so used to seeing this that 1) I didn’t notice when it wasn’t there and 2) I didn’t realize that this was the first time they showed up! I don’t remember this fucking up the subtitles before or in other episodes….maybe this was first time issues?
I am super distracted by Matt not noticing Sam’s shirt.
Funnily enough, this entire scene matches what the one dnd playtest is talking about with warlocks. Sometimes they are the only one calling for a short rest and you have this disparity in what the players want to do.
It is now July 4th, I last touched this a full fucking month ago. I have watched ~30 minutes of the latest Candela Obscura, but am struggling to get into it (a sad reality of me and CR one shots and mini-series.) SO LET’S GET BACK TO THE DRAMA!!
...I’m only 17 minutes in….*starts over from the beginning*
Oh geez I forgot that this was episode 69. They went into this with teasing hype for months about ‘lul 69’ and then they got this heart wrench of an episode.
Sam and Laura play the “I have Not(t)” bit really well. There’s just a touch in Jester’s tone which is inserting a comma in there ‘I have, Nott’, but it’s a clever bit of attempted deception as well, even though it fails.
I’d forgotten that Nott claimed the flask defined her as a person. T.T Once the campaign is over, it’s easy to remember the goblin alcoholism as mostly jokes, but there were some really deep and painful moments. I don’t personally know anyone who struggles with addiction, so I know there are aspects of this emotionally that I don’t relate to, but there these small moments are incredibly well done. Sam talked about how he discussed Scanlan’s attempts at addiction with Brian, I don’t recall if he also went to him for Nott?
The juxtaposition of Jester very seriously expressing her worries to Nott about how when Nott is drunk, she’s less cautious and will run straight at things without looking for traps, versus everyone else loosing their shit when she says ‘or trigger them’. I’ll have to try to pay attention, but I think even after this RP, Nott still doesn’t become someone super careful about looking for traps. We, of course, know her big moments in the future (happy fun ball time!), but I’m unsure if Sam/Nott is more on top of it.
I really do love the push/pull relationship that Nott/Veth has with her family and her love of adventure. In hindsight, I feel like Sam managed to hold the balance of it very well and very realistically. For most of the PCs, I feel like the epilogues give me enough to have a very good idea of their lives going forwards, even if only for a while. Veth is the one I’m curious about the most though, how does she continue to balance her love of adventure with her family? The dynamics have certainly changed from how they were pre-campaign, and that helps a lot, but I wonder if sometimes she may instigate small things for the Nein to go on, or if she insists she get invited along to someone else’s trip (maybe one of the trips to Aeor?). Or does she find herself content with the chaos of the summer camp in addition to her homely life?
LOL Sam and Laura pushing for Caleb to have a chin that matches Liam, and Liam at every instance making it clear with official art that Caleb absolutely does NOT have a cleft chin.
Does the whip ever actually get used in combat? I know it gets given to Fjord when he loses his power…. TELL ME, CRITROLESTATS. Actually transcript search might be better for this, I don’t think critrolestats says what weapon is used. I think it’s only used in the Obann fight here, and then with the purple worm by Fjord, and then by no one else ever again. XD It gets mentioned in another episode or two as a possibility to use (catching someone who might fall), but I don’t think it does?
WE NEED MORE CALEB AND YASHA MOMENTS!!! Him suggesting she be in the middle of the group, her not being sure, him saying that protection is not a bad thing, her saying it could be and then almost asking him permission to be on the front, him making it clear he’s not telling her what to do. Seriously, this pairing has SUCH a good dynamic and it only gets better from here, but we have so little interaction. :( I will forever grump and mourn and exclaim that we need more Liam and Ashley scenes. We were robbed of Pike and Vax moments in C1, robbed on Caleb and Yasha moments in C2, and I could ALWAYS use more than we currently have in C3.
LOL at the matching nat 1s for trying to determine what the sigil is. Very very glad that Caleb had fortune’s favor and could re-roll. The sometimes frustrating aspect of dnd is some PCs failing at stuff they should 100% be able to do. I’m reminded of the Hand’s heart scene where Liam kept failing checks for Caleb where everyone else was succeeding, despite the fact that it was arcana related.
...Torog? Moradin? Sehanine? What’s with all these 5e names, Matt? I’d thought you’d thoroughly switched to unique epithets by now. You’re even using with with the Allhammer and Moonweaver!
Why do they immediately assume devil upon red skin, yellow eyes, two horns? They’re all gasping before he gets to the wings, but couldn’t he just have been a tiefling with the description?
Did we ever find out what Obann thought he was actually getting from the Angel of Irons? We know they opened abyssal rifts, and that they were trying to free Tharizdun (without knowing that’s what they were doing). So like, is it just an image of an angel saying ‘free me by doing this, oh and also tear the planes apart to let demons in?’ ..demons? devils? This is the hardest part of 5e for me, dammit. Demons. Demons from the abyss. But Obann’s a devil. Aaagh as much as I enjoy the angel of irons subplot, it’s also I think the sketchiest plot in all of CR with no clear understanding of goals or what or why.
...Is this the first “making my way”??? *checks transcripts* Oh, it’s not – the first was in episode 60. BUT I think this is the first time since then, so here’s where it becomes a running gag?
Huh, not letting Fjord get off his eldritch blasts that triggered the whole initiative.
“what do a devil and a tree have in common? Intelligence” …..not gonna lie, I don’t get the joke at ALL. Tasha’s Hideous Laughter would fail just because I’m so confused. I’m ASSUMING that it’s just calling Obann dumb….if so I feel like it would be better if the object were ‘rock’ or ‘brick’, based off of ‘dumb as a rock’ or ‘dumb as a brick’.
I’ve seen some people say that Matt picked up the trick of stating a DC ahead of time from Brennan, but here he just stated that Beau needed at 25 DC acrobatics to do a flurry of blows on Obann (she fails with a 22), so it’s something that he has done beforehand. I think it’s just not something that he prefers to do much.
Only two rounds to free the Laughing Hand? Well, I guess it’s something that Matt really needed to have happen so that makes sense. I think I would have liked three or four rounds to give the PCs more time to do shit, but that’s just personal preference.
Oooo!!! I forgot that over the break he replaced the sarcophagus mini with a broken open sarcophagus! Fun!
Counterspell a Shield! Not quite a counterspell a counterspell, but still sexy.
Ashley interrupting to inform Matt that because of her Ring of Protection, Yasha’s saving throw was actually 3 instead of 2. I LOVE HER.
I really love the moments where something truly horrible starts happening to the PCs (Yasha being turned against them, being an unwilling creature for Fjord’s thunderstep) and while the PCs are NOT happy about it, the players are stoked and excited! It’s a fun juxtaposition of the true fun of ‘what’s going on’ in the game especially when compared with the more settled RP moments where the players are in full PC mode and their personal enthusiasm is sometimes hidden by the RP. Fjord is furious with Yasha for betraying them, but here Travis is wiggling and singing “this is getting interesting!”
I’m not going to research it, and a comments check didn’t help, but I wonder how many PC rolls the Bless-that-should-have-dropped actually helped. Quick check of the livetweets for critrolestats, maybe Yasha’s saving throw against the Hand’s laughter, and the rest are Beau attacks. However, Beau had advantage on many of them, rolled consistently high, and I think actually forgot the bless a number of times? So honestly? I think even if bless had dropped correctly, things still would have played out the way they did. Oh wait...Fjord’s last hit for the HDYWTDT was because of bless. (very sad the the critrolestats livetweets did not include Ashley correcting for Yasha’s 2 to 3 for the wisdom save XD)
MIGHTY NEIN ONE SHOT ANNOUNCED AS FIRST LIVE SHOW SINCE THE PANDEMIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (though I’m seeing some people saying they’ll be level 20, but can’t find any actual statement saying what level they’ll be?? Hoping before I post this that someone will let me know)
Beau using Stillness of Mind to end fear, UGH SO GOOD. Seriously, with the new UAs and everything for the new dnd I keep hearing about how bad monks are, but I haven’t ever experienced it because Beau is so GOOD (and I haven’t played with a monk yet. Someone had done a monk/cleric multiclass, but that game ended while we were still in level 2 due to some session 0 miscommunications)
Lesser Restoration not being able to cure fear, but Greater Restoration does just seems weird to me. Like, Lesser can cure blind, deaf, paralyze, or poison. While Greater…..wait. Greater doesn’t cure frightened either! It only reduces exhaustion, ends charmed or petrified, undoes a curse, undoes an ability score reduction, undoes an effect that reduces hit point max. Fear is none of those. So, neither of the restorations RAW end fear??? Well, I guess that’s the reason for Calm Emotions.
NOTT GIVES YASHA A FLOWER FROM HER HAIR I’m having my heart being crushed by things I didn’t remember! And Jester knew that Yasha was controlled, she tried to Charm her back but it didn’t work! All I really remembered from the Nein was Jester being very sad and Fjord and Beau being very angry, I didn’t remember that others knew she didn’t have a choice!
Oh FUUUUUCK I never realized that when Fjord is brought down by Yasha, only to come back with Relentless Endurance, when he asks her “why” he asks her in his true voice. MY HEAAAART.
I know everyone mentions it, but Ashley’s exaggerated sad-face when Taliesin starts to count her then skips her for Bless, then Matt winking at her and her grin. Even when they have such heavy emotional episodes like this combat turned to be, signs like that are some of the clearest that they’re all still having a blast.
Obviously didn’t say much for the combat itself, I think my only ‘analysis’ of it is that it’s one of the higher stakes combats in C2, easily matching the level of some C1 fights. Even a good chunk into C3, C1 is still the reigning champion for most intense combats. While I don’t all into the hivemind that shouts that Matt takes it easy on them, I do think there are times when Matt is taking it HARDER on them, and this certainly was one of those combats. I really do enjoy the combats where they are fighting an intelligent and evil enemy who is fully intent on destroying them. You get such great tactics and some real creativity in those moments that you don’t get as strongly on a standard 6v1/7v1 creature combat.
Ending the episode with the side by side of Matt and Ashley as Matt gently narrates the confusion in Yasha, the uncertainty of if she is being controlled or doing this on her own, it’s beautiful, heartbreaking, and perfect. (aside from the fact that because of the table layout, they end up facing away from each other during the close ups XD Who knows, maybe that makes it more jarring to go with Yasha’s mindset?)

2022 Wrap up (4 Top 5)
Hello and happy holidays! Over the last few weeks I have been pouring over lists of the top albums, songs and movies of 2022, thrilled to see what the world (or at least high budget magazines) are saying about these past twelve months. This year has felt a little more ‘normal’ (not really sure what that word means anymore, or if it even should exist) than the past two and as a result we have received a lot of exciting art.
If I love anything, its making lists. I love keeping track of what media I have consumed, things I need to buy, people I have been romantic with (zodiac signs included), and ranking my various ‘best of’s’.  Below you will find 4 lists of my Top 5 of 2022; TV shows, movies, albums and songs. Each selection is deserving of its own several page deep-dive, but I limited myself to a one-sentence review of each as I know attention spans are quite fleeting these days (my own included). Please enjoy and share your own thoughts!
TV Shows:
HOT D, Season 1
Game of Thrones with a bigger budget, advanced technology and more feminism.
2. Rings of Power, Season 1
Like HOT D, Lord of the Rings but with more than just white men, and a $1M/minute budget (yes, you read that right).
3. Our Flag Means Death, Season 1
Taika Waititi’s new project about gay pirates—do I need to say anything more?
4. Derry Girls, Season 3
Martin Scorsese likes this show, so if my endorsement isn’t enough for you his should be.
5. The Summer I Turned Pretty, Season 1
I feel like most of my life is trying to get back to being a teenage girl and this show really did that for me.
Movies:
Bones and All, Luca Guadagnino
A coming of age cannibal love story that makes you scream, jump, plug your ears, cover your eyes, laugh and cry—what more could you want?
2. Aftersun, Charlotte Wells
Beautiful imagery, incapacitatingly sad plot (my favorite juxtaposition).
3. X, Ti West
A love letter to horror film, chock full of references that made me feel like all my years spent on horror amounted to something.
4. Bodies, Bodies, Bodies, Halina Rejin
I love blood, I love girls, I love a whodunit, I love jokes—this is my dream film, also Pete Davidson is in it.
5. Tar, Todd Field
This movie is making fun of high-brow art which is funny because this movie is loved by people who love high-brow art.
Albums:
Preacher’s Daughter, Ethel Cain
A 75-minute concept album tackling love, abuse, lots of God, sex and being cannibalized with memorizing vocals, quite the feat for a debut LP.
2. Being Funny in a Foreign Language, The 1975
From dick jokes and a pop song about incel mass shootings to devastating breakup anthems, this album makes you experience most emotions.
3. Renaissance, Beyoncé
This album proves that Beyoncé can literally do anything well; a disco-club-banger-no-skips album invocative of the 70s but that absolutely hits in 2022? No problem. (sorry, this is technically two sentences)
4. Motomami, ROSALIA
Being A Bad Bitch in a Foreign Language: I have no idea what she’s saying but the emotion she conveys through her voice and the flawlessly produced beats transcend language.
5. Caprisongs, FKA Twigs
Another club-banger of an album which deals with being both hot and sad at the same time, relatable.
Songs:
Part of the Band, The 1975
There is so much to say about this song but the ‘Vaccinista, tote bag chic baristas’ line changed my life and I haven’t been the same since.
2. Killer, FKA Twigs
She called this ‘a song for baddies with a tear in their eyes’ and I cannot say anything better.
3. Anti-Hero, Taylor Swift
Famous for being vulnerable, Taylor reaches a new level of honesty with this song, expressing the very unrelatable difficulties that come along with being Taylor Swift in an extremely relatable way.
4. Hard Times, Ethel Cain
A song about a horrific topic, sung in the most ethereal way with stunning guitar accompaniment— once again, we love juxtaposition on this blog.
5. Weird Goodbyes, The National Ft. Bon Iver
The saddest lyrics you will ever hear, overlayed with a sick 808 beat.

There's a bookstore called Red Balloon Bookshop that my mom would take me to when I was a kid, and it's at that bookstore that I remember pulling the first The Dark Is Rising book off the shelf. I also remember that the book was higher than eye level, so it was one of those moments where you had to wait until it was actually in your hands before you could thoroughly consider it as your next read. I was enamored pretty quickly; there's a scene, maybe, that involves some understated juxtaposition between a still winter scene, dark and murky, and Will's sister braiding her hair or something, and I still find it striking, that proximity of magic and the mundane. For me, Will was the one with staying power; he was steady, a little boring as the main vessel for action, but he occasionally flashed a smile or cracked a joke that made him passable as human. That was so weird to me, this kid pretending to be a kid, and I was obsessed. His bond with Bran evoked something similar; that moment where Will could sense something he knew none of the others could, "except one," felt anomalous and privileged, except maybe Cooper was simply saying he wasn't so alone anymore.
Reading The Dark is Rising was, as it turns out, a personal prerequisite for reading The Raven Cycle, because part of the reason why I was intrigued, aside from being inundated by fancast posts on Tumblr, was learning that Stiefvater obviously read the series, then pulled that thread into another universe. I still don't have any physical copies of the books, but I've been living with a Gangsey-cut groove in my brain for the past nine years, which is basically a long-term relationship, and relationships require traditions. So first, happy birthday, Adam Parrish. Second, I did end up finishing The Dreamer Trilogy. Has it fundamentally changed anything I felt about the previous series? Not really. Am I glad I read it? Come on, of course. I feel like it's clear the series was written under duress. Things that are designed to withstand certain loads should also be designed to fail at a certain point; the idea is to make failure predictable, then build in redundancies. The convergence of loose threads -- and the pace at which that happens -- seems to be that point of failure for many writers. But I don't think Stiefvater did too badly, even if a few mysteries remain.
A short list of coincidences that delighted me while reading: The Lynch family migrating north coincided with our move north; we lived right off the Dulles Toll Road and now we're frequenting family in the Boston suburbs. It's almost like half the country lives along the Eastern Seaboard or something. I already mentioned Great Falls, Georgetown, but we also went sailing last summer; the Venn diagram of Declan Lynch's date spots and our date spots is a circle. Rajiv Surendra's video on John Singer Sargent popped up on my YouTube feed soon after finishing Greywaren. I'm getting married this summer, in an art museum. I would love, actually, to read The Dark is Rising, The Raven Cycle, and The Dreamer Trilogy in tandem, just to see what that's like. Like, I know it was never really about Welsh kings, but still, why the Welsh kings?

Doctor Who, but Chronologically 12
It’s now 1814, the last of the London Frost Fairs, and a miracle has happened, friends - the first Capaldi episode has aired in which he isn’t an utter cunt. Not just that - he is actively enjoyable, the episode is good and fun, and for the first time it’s possible to see why his wonderful and charming companion wants to spend time with him. Incredible. Never thought I’d see the like.
And he’s great! Witty and clever and charming in a slightly grumpy way. This is the most respectful I think I’ve seen any version of this character, actually - they step out into 1814 London and Bill, as Martha did before her, asks if it’s safe for her to be out, given that she’s black. Unlike Tennant or even Whittaker, he does gravely acknowledge the point, and doesn’t try to dismiss it - and then he takes her down to the Fair to see London 1814 in all its true multicultural glory. “History’s a whitewash,” he sniffs, and then it’s on with the episode. Beautiful. Fantastic. Loved it.
AND HE’S HAVING FUN. He’s actually bloody enjoying himself. Moreover, he’s actually joking with his companion. He and Bill banter their way around the Frost Fair for a good ten minutes, even when things start to get serious, and even after they still joke with each other. It’s her first trip to the past, even though we have seen her further back than this in the Fascist Episode, and he teases her that her friend Pete stepped on a butterfly and now doesn’t exist. It’s glorious. He finds out that something is wrong in the area, and he doesn’t need to be told to go and fucking do something - he just does it. Well; Bill does yell at him, but actually it’s a bit extraneous, and more to do with her temper.
Speaking of, there is a SPECTACULAR scene where he knocks out a racist in Bill’s honour. Fucking incredible.
Uh, this has become an episode review I’m sorry I just loved this episode and it was so nice to get to actually enjoy a Capaldi episode for once T_T okay okay I’ll stop
SO
What new things have we learned?
Well, quite a lot! He describes himself as Bill’s teacher at one point, which is interesting, because that does not seem to have been his role with anyone before - was Clara a teacher? I think she was, last time we saw her. And then, at the important part of the episode, he asks Bill to make a decision about the giant fish monster trapped in the Thames. When she asks why it has to be up to her, he says she’s in charge. “I serve at the pleasure of the human race,” he grins, which is a fucking revelation coming from Mister “I told you to run and that’s all the help you get” but OKAY THEN. And then at the end of the episode as they return to the present, he calls her Boss. It’s a very fun juxtaposition, but how is he her teacher in any way???
And then, he seems to have an office. Somehow. Somewhere. Nardole is back.
“Here’s your tea,” Nardole says. “I mixed it with a bit of coffee for flavour,” a line that made me laugh until I wheezed.
Nardole is still calling him sir(????), and is unaccountably angry with him for making the trip with Bill, because apparently he swore an Oath, which... I think we knew about? Is that the Vault? Maybe. The Doctor uses a new con trick he learned at the Frost Fair to trick Nardole into ‘letting’ him fly off in the TARDIS whenever. Nardole finishes by going down to the Vault doors, which are very impressive, and yelling at Missy to stop knocking on them. I mean... we don’t see her. Oddly, the show is trying to play it as though we don’t know what’s inside, but LOL we know it’s her. Odd directorial choice. It’s almost like you should never watch this show in this viewing order.
AND THEN Nardole says that he was “reassembled” wtf???
Oh, final shout out to Bill, a shameless lesbian, for falling in love with the TARDIS. Me too, Bill. Me too.
Anyway: let’s check the list!
“She” (an unknown person) is returning (perhaps River returned as Missy. Maybe Me?)
There is something on Donna’s back
An entire planet, Pyrovilia, just… disappeared, somehow. (Maybe because the TARDIS is exploding??? Saturnine was also lost, and that WAS because of the TARDIS exploding. The lion man’s planet was also lost but he was a bit of a knob about it if I’m honest.)
Amy is maybe dead (she’s not)
The Doctor has been cubed (he’s out, but how?)
River is possibly blown up  (unless she’s Missy)
The TARDIS has blown up  (It’s fine now)
The universe appears to have ended  (the universe is back again)
The Doctor has employed(?) Nardole (NEW INFO: Nardole was “reassembled???”)
There’s a vault in the TARDIS and it contains Missy but we don’t know why (NEW INFO: sometimes she knocks for the bants)
What has happened to all these companions and where are the new ones coming from?
There’s an immortal Viking girl now. Her name is Me and she’s now looking after the people the Doctor abandons
Who/what is the Half-Faced Man that the Doctor talked about?
Why, when the Doctor saw the ship’s computer set to the Promised Land, did he say “Oh not again”?
What’s With The Silence?
Why was Rory entirely unconcerned by the entire world suddenly going silent when that is Not Normal and should have been, at the very least, extremely disconcerting?
What did the Doctor do to Queen Lizzie One?
Who is Captain Jack Harkness?
Why is Amy seeing a one-eyed woman in a vanishing window?
What’s with the Doctor’s future involving getting shot by an astronaut?
Is Amy pregnant and why is it inconclusive?
Who is Sarah-Jane Smith?
How is the Doctor Bill’s teacher and why/where does he have an office?

Moments from the Misha, Darius Zoom:
Darius: I WILL SAY THE FIRST THING ONE WANTS TO DO IN A ZOOM TO ESTABLISH DOMINANCE IS WHEN THE BACKGROUND CONTEST.
__________
MISHA: WE BOTH MOVED TO L.A. IN -- DARIUS: 99.
MISHA: DECEMBER OF 98, RIGHT BEFORE NEW YEAR'S. WE MOVED INTO THE SAME LITTLE, YOUR AUNT'S FRIEND'S HOUSE ON THE VENICE CANALS. YOUR WIFE WAS PREGNANT WITH YOUR FIRST CHILD AT THAT POINT AND MY WIFE AND I DID NOT KNOW IT AND WE WERE LIKE WHY ARE THEY SLEEPING ALL DAY, WHAT IS WRONG WITH THEM?
DARIUS: THERE WAS A GAS LEAK ALSO IN THE HOUSE. SO WE WERE ALL SLEEPING ALL DAY.
MISHA: THAT'S TRUE.
___________
MISHA: THERE WAS A TIME WHEN WE WERE YOUNGER WHEN I DON'T KNOW THAT I THERE WAS A TIME WHEN WE WERE YOUNGER WHEN I DON'T KNOW THAT I WOULD HAVE GENUINELY CELEBRATED YOUR SUCCESSES, BUT THERE WAS A TIME FOR YOU STARTED MAKING THE MOVIE "LOOT" THAT WAS YOUR FIRST BIG SUCCESSFUL PROJECT. I THINK IN THE PROCESS OF MAKING THAT I REMEMBER FEELING OVERWHELMED WITH SUPPORT AND JOY FOR YOU. I JUST WANTED YOU TO SEE THIS CREATIVE VISION THROUGH AND NOTHING WOULD HAVE MADE ME HAPPIER THAN IT TO BE SUCCESSFUL.
_____________
DARIUS: I DON'T THINK I WOULD BE EVEN REMOTELY THE SAME PERSON HAD WE NOT BEEN FRIENDS...
_____________
DARIUS: AND WE BOTH AUDITIONED FOR IT AND AS FATE WOULD HAVE IT, YOU ENDED UP IN THE LEAD ROLE OF THAT PLAY AND WITH ALL SINCERITY YOU DID AN INCREDIBLE JOB, LIKE IT WAS ONE OF THOSE MAGICAL, I THINK YOU WOULD AGREE, ONE OF THOSE MAGICAL SCHOOL PLAYS THAT JUST IS INCREDIBLY MEMORABLE. I STILL REMEMBER IT, JUST SITTING THERE AND ENJOYING IT AND WATCHING YOU KIND OF YOUR BEST. IN I REMEMBER THEN FEELING REALLY PROUD OF YOU. I REMEMBER SITTING AND WATCHING YOU ACT AND FEELING LIKE THIS IS WHAT THIS GUY IS HERE TO DO. BECAUSE YOU WERE ON STAGE AND IT WAS SO UNDENIABLE.
_____________
DARIUS: I FEEL LIKE WE HAVE HAD A PRETTY CLEAR CHANNEL OF SUPPORT FOR EACH OTHER ALL ALONG. AND I WILL SAY, HAD IT NOT BEEN FOR YOUR SUPPORT ALL THOSE YEARS MAKING SOUND OF METAL, I DON'T KNOW THAT I COULD'VE MADE IT. THAT'S HOW IMPORTANT IT WAS, THOSE WERE HARD YEARS COME ALONG, YOU KNOW, 10 YEARS OF FAITH IN A PROCESS THAT HAD NO PROOF OF CONCEPT. SO, YOU KNOW, I NEEDED THAT SUPPORT AND YOU WERE THERE MANY, MANY, MANY TIMES OVER. I REALLY HATE TO BE SINCERE WITH YOU, I FEEL LIKE IT FEELS WRONG BUT THAT IS THE TRUTH.
____________
DARIUS: ...BECAUSE HE AND I BOTH CAME FROM SO LITTLE. I DON'T THINK WE WERE THAT AFRAID TO HAVE LITTLE. I DON'T THINK WE WERE AFRAID TO SCRAPE THE BOTTOM AND KEEP SCRAPING THE BOTTOM AND SCRAPING THE BOTTOM A LITTLE MORE.
MISHA: I HAVE HAD AN INTERESTING RELATIONSHIP WITH THAT SCARCITY DYNAMIC BECAUSE ON THE ONE THING, WHAT YOU ARE SAYING IS TRUE AND I ALWAYS IN MY HEART OF HEARTS KNOWN I WOULD BE OK WITH NOTHING, I WOULD BE OK LIVING IN A TENT IF I NEEDED TO. AND THAT KNOWLEDGE PROVIDES A PRETTY BIG SAFETY NET, BECAUSE YOU NEVER WALK AROUND FEELING LIKE I NEED THIS MONEY. I KNOW I'M GOING TO BE OK.
AT THE SAME TIME, COMING FROM POVERTY, I THINK THE ALLURE OF MONEY HAS BEEN MAYBE MORE POWERFUL THAN IT WOULD HAVE BEEN FOR ME OTHERWISE. IF I HAD ALWAYS HAD MONEY, I MIGHT NOT HAVE BEEN SO DRAWN INTO MAKING MONEY WHEN THAT OPPORTUNITY FINALLY CAME IN MY LIFE. AND I MAY HAVE MADE CHOICES THAT DIDN'T THAT WEREN'T QUITE SO DRIVEN BY MAKING MONEY, IF THAT MAKES SENSE. AS I'M GETTING OLDER, I AM ABLE TO FORMULATE THESE THOUGHTS AND RECALIBRATE TO AN EXTENT. BUT THERE WAS A TIME WHEN I WAS MAKING MONEY JUST FOR THE SAKE OF MAKING MONEY WHEN IT WASN'T REALLY ABOUT ANYTHING CREATIVE OR BIGGER THAN THAT, AND I THINK THAT WAS A LITTLE BIT ALSO RELATED TO HAVING COME FROM POVERTY.
DARIUS: THAT IS INTERESTING, I DON'T THINK YOU'VE EVER REALLY VOICED THAT TO ME, THAT SCARCITY MODEL YOU HAD WORKING THAT WAY. THAT MAKES SENSE ACTUALLY, AND I THINK PEOPLE KNOW THIS ABOUT YOU, BUT IT WA SA LEVEL OF POVERTY THAT WAS THREATENING. IT WASN'T LIKE WE WERE KIND OF POOR OR YOU ARE SOMEWHERE IN THE MIDDLE CLASS SPECTRUM, YOU WERE IN A SERIOUS, SERIOUS LANDSCAPE OF POVERTY.
_______________
MISHA: IT'S FUNNY, FROM THE VANTAGE POINT OF CHILDHOOD, YOU TO ME IT LOOKED JUST AWASH IN MONEY. YOUR FAMILY WAS FUCKING LOADED. AND I REMEMBER YOUR DAD, ONCE EVERY THREE MONTHS OR SO WE WOULD ALL GO OUT TO PANDA EAST, WHICH IS BASICALLY THE CHEAPEST CHINESE RESTAURANT IN TOWN COME UP BUT TO ME IT WAS LIKE CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT WE ARE JUST GOING OUT AND ORDERING WHATEVER WE WANT AT THIS RESTAURANT? IT SEEMED SO OPULENT TO ME. IT'S REALLY AMAZING.
______________
MISHA: I REMEMBER DRIVING UP TO PUTNEY RIGHT AFTER I GOT MY DRIVERS LICENSE, I WAS 16 AND A HALF OR 17 AND DRIVING UP ON A SCHOOL NIGHT AT 3:00 IN THE MORNING JUST TO CHECK ON YOU, BECAUSE I KNEW YOU WERE KIND OF ON THE EDGE AT THAT POINT. YOU COULD HAVE EASILY NOT SURVIVED HIGH SCHOOL AND A COUPLE OF YEARS AFTER THAT. YOU WERE REALLY ON THE EDGE.
DARIUS: IT'S TRUE.
MISHA: YOU WOULD GO FOR DAYS WITHOUT SLEEPING, YOU WERE A PSYCHOLOGICAL MESS AT THAT POINT AND I DO REMEMBER GOING UP THERE AND WORRYING ABOUT YOU AND CHECKING ON YOU.
_______________
DARIUS: I DON'T KNOW ABOUT YOU, BUT I HAVE FOUND THAT I HAVE NOT NEEDED YOU LESS AS I GOT OLDER.
_______________
DARIUS: YEAH, SO, HERE IS THE THING ABOUT THE OSCARS. I HAVEN'T REALLY TALKED ABOUT THIS AT ALL. BUT THE OSCARS COINCIDED WITH - AS YOU KNOW, MISHA, COINCIDED WITH A REALLY CRAZY TIME FOR ME BECAUSE MY BEST HAVE A VERY SICK CHILD.
- BECAUSE I HAVE A VERY SICK CHILD. SO AROUND THE TIME OF THE TIME OF THE OSCARS, LEADING UP TO THE OSCARS IS MAYBE ONE OF THE DARKEST, MOST DIFFICULT TIMES OF MY LIFE DEFINITIVELY. AND YOU KNOW I HAVE HAD SOME DARK TIMES.
SO, SO OFTEN WE LOOK AT THESE THINGS AND IT LOOKS LIKE ONE THING. AND WE NEVER KNOW THE SUBPLOT THAT LIVES BEHIND IT, AND WE NEVER KNOW WHAT HAPPENS BEYOND THE IMAGE OF PERFECTNESS AND SUCCESS.
MISHA: I THINK THAT IS EXACERBATED IN THIS MOMENT IN OUR SOCIETY BECAUSE SOCIAL MEDIA, EVERYONE IS ALWAYS SHOWCASING THE MOST PERFECT VERSION OF THEIR WIVES AND FAMILIES.
AND OF COURSE, YOU WERE GOING THROUGH THE JUXTAPOSITION OF THAT PARTICULAR MOMENT IN YOUR LIFE, AND YOU ARE STILL GOING THROUGH THE HARD CHAPTER, APPARENT SUFFERING THROUGH A SICK CHILD AND WHAT YOUR CHILD IS GOING THROUGH IS JUST SO HARD AND SO HEARTBREAKING. AND TO HAVE THAT MOMENT THAT YOU HAVE BEEN WORKING TOWARD YOUR WHOLE LIFE, YOU JUST REACHED THE APEX OF YOUR CAREER, YOU MAY NEVER AGAIN BE AT THE OSCARS, AND ANYONE WHO EVER THINKS THEY ARE GOING TO WIND UP AT THE OSCARS IS DELUSIONAL, IT JUST DOESN'T WIND UP AT THE OSCARS IS DELUSIONAL, IT JUST DOESN'T HAPPEN. AND YET YOU HAVE FOUND YOURSELF THERE AT THIS INCREDIBLE TRIUMPHANT UNLIKELY MOMENT.
DARIUS: I DID ALWAYS KNOW I WOULD BE THERE BUT GO ON.
MISHA: AT THE SAME TIME YOU ARE SUFFERING THROUGH THE MOST EXHAUSTING AND MOST EMOTIONALLY DRAINING THING IMAGINABLE, AND IT WAS ALMOST LIKE A KIND OF CRUEL JOKE FROM THE UNIVERSE, IT SEEMED.
DARIUS: IT WAS THE CRUELEST DICHOTOMY. AND I THINK WHAT WAS IMPORTANT FOR ME AT THAT TIME IS I WAS NAVIGATING A LOT, PRESS, THE OSCARS, I WAS DIRECTING SOMETHING ELSE OF THE TIME, RUNNING BACK AND FORTH AT THE HOSPITAL, SLEEPING ON A HOSPITAL COT, DOING ALL THE STUFF, THAT I NEEDED SOMETHING NEAR ME THAT I UNDERSTOOD, YOU KNOW?
I NEEDED SOMEONE NEAR ME THAT I FELT GROUNDING RIGHT THEN. AND THAT WAS ACTUALLY THE TRUTH OF IT, IS LIKE, YOU ARE THE PERSON ON THE FACE OF THE -- FACE OF THE EARTH THAT I COULD CALL ON AT THAT MOMENT AND I NEEDED IT.
____________
These are some of the moments from the zoom. It was quite emotional as you can tell from the little bit of transcript I'm posting. You can tell how close these two are and how much they have been there for each other over the years, how well they know each other. They have one of those rare life long friendships.
I do wanna say this and I'm not saying it to be rude or anything but I remember there was a cameo that Misha did and he said he was helping a friend with a sick child and the person who bought the cameo got mad cuz their question wasn't answered and they said cruel things about Misha. Well, shame on you.
We may not have had this information at the time but you never assume when someone mentions a sick kid and don't mention how bad it is, it could be nothing or it could be something major like with Darius' kid. Misha could have not done the cameo at all but he did when he had his best friend and his best friends kid on his mind and was worried about. Shame on anyone who said mean things from that cameo. Misha always does the best he can for all of us.
Anyway, I hope we get to see more from these two in the future. They are both amazingly talented individuals.

Animation Analysis: Centaurworld
Tumblr media
When I first saw the trailers, I initially wrote off Centaurworld as a mindless, stupid kid’s show. You know the sort. The kind that talks down to its audience and treats them like they’re braindead morons. Like Teen Titans Go. The entertainment equivalent of dangling keys in front of your baby to distract them. But I’m surprised to find I enjoyed... aspects of it. Wammawink and Horse had a great foil dynamic and their duets were often really compelling character explorations. I also found myself laughing at Glendale and her kleptomania bit a lot. Glendale was easily the funniest character by a wide margin, followed by Wammawink and Horse. The final villain of the Nowhere King and his backstory was also quite engaging. He felt like a tragic mix of Beast and the Little Mermaid, loving his Beauty from afar, and changing to be with her. I found all of these elements to work and be compelling. The music was also really good, having an almost disney-level quality in some of them. The show was also clearly written as a musical, as like a normal musical, there would often be reprised versions, or repetition of instrumentals from one song in another, which makes it less of a show with songs, and more of an animated musical where the music strings together quite nicely. However, there were other aspects that bogged the show down as a whole. I won’t knock the tone, since that’s going to be more subjective, but if you asked me what the actual theme of the story was, the only one I can really point to is Horse changing and having to learn to love and accept who she’s become, and also kinda sorta reads like an allegory for being trans or coming out as gay? You’re noticeably different, but hope not to lose the people you knew before you made that switch. Other than that, the only other theme I really came away with was maybe the juxtaposition of cutesy silly cartoons next to dramatic serious ones, trying to prove that even a silly cutesy cartoon can get dark and complex. But this is sort of where the show falls flat a bit to me, at least. It may have these ideas or themes like togetherness or acceptance, but doesn’t really explore these ideas thoroughly enough to make it clear that’s the moral we’re supposed to take away from the story. Yes, connections and family is certainly important, but why they’re important is never explored. Not in any way that doesn’t come off as comedic. The scene where Durpleton meets Chet certainly does a decent job at demonstrating found family, but it’s immediately undercut by the comedy of Wammawink arriving on a helicopter and Zulius appearing out of nowhere. That’s my other issue with the show. The characters are rather static. Aside from Horse and maybe Wammawink, nobody really changes by the end of the story. Durpleton has an arc about becoming a father, but it comes off more like Stabby developed Stockholm Syndrome, especially because his sudden change into a weird chibi baby form is never explained. Glendale is still a Klepto, Wammawink is still an overbearing hyperprotective guardian, Zulius is completely disregarded as a joke because we never see his backstory and he just... makes up with Sublime effortlessly, to the point where it basically becomes a non-issue. The only character I felt shows some growth is Ched, expect it’s not so much that he grows, as much as we learn his origins. And once we learn his origins, he keeps acting like an obnoxious tool, which fails to redeem his shitty personality. He’s not a Tsundere, he’s just an obnoxious bully who negs Horse at every opportunity. Some of the ending is also slightly contrived. The purple-haired lady (I think she has a name but I swear they NEVER say it in the show, they just call her ‘my lady’ or ‘princess’.) just knows to stab her husband, even though we’re not really sure how much she knows about who he is. We sure did have time for a dumb fandom/con plotline but not time to flesh out and actually explore her relationship with the general. Because we literally never see any part of their actual marriage. If you’re just looking at the flashbacks in sequential order, we see her marry the general, her lead the elk out of the dungeon through the sewers, and then the three of them together in the rift. That is literally all we see of that phase of her life. There is no indication of how she felt, or how she came to learn what was going on. We don’t get to see that change of mind, that ‘aha’ moment, which causes the Last Lullaby to feel weak. It lacks the weight it should have because we barely know who she is as a character. She’s in 4 episodes, and most of her screen time she just kind of... exists. We don’t really know how she feels or what she wants. And that’s sort of where Centaurworld falls flat. It spends so much time being whacky and colorful it forgets to really develop its characters. Which is why I have to sadly put Zulius into the box of bad queer representation. He’s just a joke character. He’s comedic relief. He’s just a bad gay stereotype with no deeper nuance or deeper character. He’s a surface-level cliché, and that’s so disappointing for a show that seems to want to present itself as progressive and open-minded. But being a gay stereotype is 99.9% of his character. Season 2 is also rather aimless until the finale movie. There’s this subplot of Horse needing a win, and to feel like her decision to stay was the right choice, but the main plot surrounding this subplot are kind of boring. The Horse thing is great and makes terrific sense for her character, but the episodes that facilitate this arc are rather uninteresting. Glendale helps a bunch of arctic centaurs with their anxiety, but I can’t really say this feels like any sort of conclusion to an arc. There was never this fixation on Glendale being hyper fragile to the point that she broke under any kind of pressure and would never be the type to lead or inspire others. She had running gags of anxiety and nervous break downs, but they don’t feel resolved by this episode. It just sort of comes off as a weird joke that Glendale has actually managed to turn a bad situation around to her benefit. At the end of the day, Centaurworld was... interesting. I’d be willing to give it a B- if only because there are plenty of shows more boring, soulless, and lacking any form of identity than this one. But character arcs stall out, and some side characters who feel like they should be explored end up sidelined. I would have bumped the show up to a B if it had committed to the major character death. But no, stupid kid show logic dictates we must treat a death scene with the utmost seriousness and then immediately undercut it by going “just kidding”. It’s to the point now when a character acts like they’re dying, I’m just looking at my watch wondering how long they’re going to milk this before playing an Uno Reverse on the whole thing. Centaurworld is honestly a mixed bag. It has good music and the main character is interesting, as well as the villain. But it’s also kinda rushed, and filled with side characters who are either stagnant or underdeveloped, leaving it as a decent and memorable show, but held back by lack of depth and focus on further details. I’m satisfied with giving it a B-. It’s above average. But, I doubt I’ll rewatch it more than once or twice in the future. Kinda like She-Ra. It was fine, but I’m probably not going to go out of my way to rewatch it again and again now that I know how it ends. Would I recommend it to others? Maybe, but they’d have to be people that I know would appreciate the show’s tone and aesthetic.

Alright, If We’re Gonna Play with Az’s Bonus Chapter, Let’s PLAY with Az’s Bonus Chapter (Pt. 1)
I’m going to do a close reading of this bonus chapter, because this whole thing is stressing me out and I want to write out what I think I know what I definitely know and what I’m worried about. Here. We. Go.
I’m not going to directly quote supporting info in this post, but I will be using a LOT of quotes in the next few weeks, so if anyone wants me to confirm a certain statement I’m making here just let me know and I’ll drop the receipts :)
Also this is super long but I had a lot of thoughts I’m excited about! My commentary is in bold italics!
The river house had finally fallen quiet after the raucous Winter Solstice party, the faelights dimming to cast little pools of gold amid the deep shadow here is an example of contrast between light and dark, which many have made salient points on regarding the counterbalance of Elain/Azriel and their relationship of the longest night of the year.
Amren, Mor, and Varian had finally gone to bed, but Azriel found himself lingering downstairs.
He knew he should get some sleep. He’d need it come dawn, for the snowball battle up at the cabin. Cassian had mentioned no less than six times tonight that he had a secret plan regarding his so-called impending victory. Az had let his brother boast. Especially since Azriel had been planning his own victory for a year now. Had been planning his own victory for a year now, and had one the past 199 years’ worth of fights.
Cassian wouldn’t know what was coming for him. And Az fully planned on capitalizing on the fact that Nesta likely wouldn’t let Cassian sleep much tonight.
Az snickered to himself, to the listening shadows around him. Note the differentiation between himself and the shadows around him - he snickers to them outside of himself, as they are not HIM, they are his companions.
Sleep, they seemed to whisper in his ear. Sleep.
I wish I could, he answered silently. But sleep so rarely found him these days. Again, engaging in a conversation with them. Though he does say that they SEEMED to whisper sleep, which is interesting. He seems to communicate with them beyond worded language, this is a case where he’s translating whatever that communication is into words.
Too many razor-sharp thoughts sliced him any time he grew still long enough for them to strike Yeah this guy needs some therapy for sure, love him but this feels very much like the state of avoidance that Nesta found herself in. Too many wants and needs left his skin overheated and pulling taut across his bones. so he slept only when his body gave out, and even then only for a few hours. This feels very much like an extreme, one that certainly didn’t exist all of the time with Mor (otherwise he’s truly not been sleeping for…ever). I have a very, very hard time believing he would have this reaction because of lust or a coveting kind of obsession.
Azriel surveyed the empty family room, presents and ribbons littering the furniture. Cassian and Nesta hadn’t reappeared downstairs, though that came as no surprise. He was elated for his brother, and yet...
Azriel couldn’t stop it. The envy in his chest. Of Cassian, and Rhys. This is almost exactly the sentiment expressed by Cassian in ACOFAS/ACOSF
He knew he’d be swallowed by it if he went up to his bedroom, so he’d remained down here by the dying light of the fire.
But even the silence weighed too heavily, and though the shadows kept him company, as they always had, as they always would, he found himself leaving the room. Entering the foyer. Entering the foyer for what? Entering in order to go to bed? Or was he drawn there, somehow knowing Elain would be there? I really don’t know the answer and I don’t have a preference as to whether or not they are mates, but it’s worth thinking about. Also important to note that the SHADOWS ARE NOT ENOUGH FOR AZRIEL. They are his friends, an important coping mechanism, but they are not the sum of who he is, nor do they even represent the part of himself that is most realized or fulfilled.
Soft steps padded from under the stair archway, and there she was.
The faelights gilded Elain’s unbound hair, making her glow like the sun at dawn. She halted, her breath catching in her throat. Again, imagery to highlight a contrast between the two of them, Elain as the sun at dawn. Note that it’s talking about dawn, not day. SJM has repeatedly used language about Summer, Dawn, Spring and such to describe Elain, which makes me wonder if her light is meant to transcend the courts - in the same way that the shadows are not the sum of Azriel, the sun (the Day, the Dawn, Spring, Summer etc.) is not the sum of Elain.
“I...” He watched her swallow. She clutched a small gift in her hands. “I was coming to leave this on your pile of presents. I forgot to give it to you earlier.” One thing I noticed on closer examination, she went downstairs to leave it in his pile, not to see him. I wonder if it hurts her to be around HIM as well. Elain has said several times in this book (either on the page or in second- or third-hand account) that she is committed to this court, and I wonder if that same commitment that had her going to the Hewn City is what also has prevented her from ending things with Lucien. It’s not in her nature to be disingenuous, and so she cannot fake certain feelings for him, but it IS in her nature to be selfless, and she probably understands what their mating bond means and how important Lucien’s alliance is. I wonder also if she is unsure as to Azriel’s feelings or if she knows somehow, as Azriel sort of implies she might below.
Lie. Well, the second part was a lie. He didn’t need his shadows to read her tone, the slight tightening of her face. She’d waited until everyone was asleep before venturing down, where she’d leave her gift amongst his other, opened presents, subtle and unnoticed. This is another instance in which Azriel sees her when no one else does, even when she’s not intending or someone to see her. Also, of course, important to note that he can read her without his shadows - a crutch that he uses in interactions with many other people.
Elain closed the distance, and her breathing quickened as she again paused, now a scant foot away. She extended the wrapped gift, her hand shaking. “Here.” Elain makes ALL the moves in this scene - she approaches him, she asks him to put the necklace on her, she leans in, she says yes etc. etc. I think Azriel is actually very respectful and restrained throughout this whole interaction.
Az tried not to look at his scarred fingers as they took the gift. Azriel is ashamed of his scars, and is ashamed of them with Feyre and Mor as well as Elain, this is an across-the-board part of his characterization. She hadn’t bought her mate a present. But she’d gotten Azriel one last year — a headache powder he kept on his nightstand at the House of Wind The headache powder: proof that Elain has been seeing him - specifically seeing him rub his temples. Not to use, but to look at. Which he’d done every night he’d slept there. Or attempted to sleep there.
Azriel unwrapped the box, glancing at the card that merely said, You might find these useful at the House these days, and then opened the lid. Elain is not a casual person, she can’t even handle it when Feyre (her sister) tries to talk to her and Nesta (her other sister) privately about High Fae menstruation. For every lack of flourish or formality that Elain gives Azriel, that is another measured degree of comfort she feels with him - she wouldn’t give an unsigned, familiar note to just anyone.
Two small, bean-shaped fabric blobs lay within. Elain murmured, “You put them in your ears, and they block any sound. With Nesta and Cassian living there with you...”
He chuckled, unable to suppress the impulse. “No wonder you didn’t want me to open it in front of everyone.”
Elain’s mouth twitched into a smile. “Nesta wouldn’t appreciate the joke.” Elain and Azriel have similar senses of humor. Not necessarily in content, but in the way it sort of crops up off-the-cuff and sometimes unnoticed. I like that Elain makes him laugh.
He offered a smile back. “I wasn’t sure if I should give you your present.”
He left the rest unspoken.  Because her mate was here, sleeping a level up. Because her mate had been in the family room and Azriel had needed to stay by the door the whole time because he couldn’t stand the sight of it, the scent of their mating bond, and needed to have the option of leaving if it became too much.
Elain’s large brown eyes flickered, well aware of all that. Just as he knew she was well aware of why Azriel so rarely came to family dinners these days. Alright so, this is really curious. Does this mean that they both seem to be aware of the other’s feelings AND aware that the other is aware of their feelings? I really do wonder if, in this case, Az is an unreliable narrator- maybe assuming more certainty of Elain than she actually has. Again, I don’t think he would have such a visceral reaction to Elain and Lucien being in the same room (and not even close to each other at all) if he was just infatuated or in lust with her
But tonight, here in the dark and quiet more juxtaposition, with no one to see... no one to see, except the two of them, who always see more than others and who always see each other more than anyone else He pulled the small velvet box from the shadows around him. Opened it for her.
Elain sucked in a soft breath that whispered over his skin. His shadows skittered back at the sound. They’d always been prone to vanish when she was around. If Azriel is aware of the fact that his shadows disappear around Elain, and is still almost certainly in love with Elain, I think we can gather that it’s a positive thing for his shadows to give them privacy- which- btw, is what I think they are doing. The shadows feel to Azriel, to me, the way that the HoW feels to Nesta. The HoW doesn’t dislike Cassian, but also doesn’t need to be as diligent with Nesta when he’s around, because the House trusts Cassian with her.
The golden necklace seemed ordinary — it’s chain unremarkable, the amulet tiny enough that it could be dismissed as an everyday charm. It was a small, flat rose fashioned of stained glass, designed so that when held to the light, the truth depth of the colors would become visible. A thing of secret, lovely beauty. So I don’t think he’s saying that Elain is a thing here. I think he’s saying that HIS FEELINGS for her are a thing of secret, lovely beauty. It’s been made pretty clear that Elain’s physical AND inner beauty are decidedly visible and prominent. She is, the opposite of secret- though she is often described as lovely. I think what’s more interesting here is the time dedicated to describing this gift and the time dedicated to describing Lucien’s gift of pearl earrings (more on that later, but spoiler-alert, that’s the extent of the description)
“It’s beautiful,” she whispered, lifting it from the box. The golden faelight shone through the little glass facets this word choice is notable because it’s an indication of layers and depth and different sides, setting the charm glowing with hues of red and pink and white. Azriel let his shadows he let them do it, again the way he interacts with his shadows does not make it seem like they ARE him. It would probably say “Azriel’s shadows whisked away the box” or “Azriel used his shadows to…” etc. whisk away the box as she said softly, “Put it on me?” Again, Elain is driving the action
His head went quiet. But he took the necklace, opening the clasp as she exposed her back sweeping her hair up in one hand to bare her long, creamy neck. That this situation is described in such slow, delicate detail evokes a sense of intimacy and gravity to the reader. Every tiny piece of this little bite of interaction means something to Azriel and probably to Elain.
He knew it was wrong, but there he was, sliding the necklace around her. Letting his scarred fingers touch her immaculate skin this word choice is admittedly a little strange, but the use of this and later of the word sacrilege is FAR from the first time SJM uses religiously-coded language to describe a romantic/sexual/intimate situation. In this very book, Cassian describes his sex with Nesta “as close to a religious experience” as he’d ever gotten - furthermore, there is often talk of the worship of bodies. More on this in another post! ALSO, of course he thinks about touching her in relation to himself. He is himself, for one thing, for another, one of the most reinforced aspects of Azriel’s character that has been made clear to us as readers is his belief that he is unworthy. This comes up not at all just with Elain, it comes up everywhere. It comes up when Azriel volunteers for the most dangerous assignments, it comes up with Mor A LOT, it comes up with Rhys and Cassian. I HAVE A LOT MORE TO SAY ABOUT AZRIEL SO I JUST NEED TO STOP TYPING RIGHT N. Letting them brush the side of her throat, savoring the velvet-soft texture. Elain shivered that’s hot and he took a damn long time fastening the clasp.
Azriel’s fingers lingered at her nape, atop the first knob of her spine SUCH precise language, so agonizing. Slowly, Elain pivoted into his touch. Until his palm lay flat against her neck.
It had never gone this far. They’d exchanged looks, the occasional brush of their fingers, but never this. Never blatant, unrestricted touching. Another important line in reiterating the fact that there are two people participating in this interaction and the broader relationship, with the use of ‘exchanged’ and ‘their.’ It could easily also say something like, “Azriel had never gone this far. She’d sometimes caught him looking at her and he her, and every so often he’d taken the risk of brushing his fingers against hers.” Elain’s agency in these interactions and this relationship is SO IMPORTANT! It is the difference between Az viewing Elain as a two-dimensional and unattainable figure and as a real person with wants and needs.
Wrong — it was so wrong. Azriel knows, just as well as Rhys, what is at stake in Elain’s relationship with Lucien. He also has reverence for the mating bond in the same way that many other fae and faeries do. Of course he thinks it’s wrong!
He didn’t care.
He needed to know what the skin of her neck tasted like. What those perfect lips tasted like. Her breasts. Her sex. He needed her coming on his tongue — There is literally so much talk in Feysand and Nessian of tasting and eating out. Both Rhys and Cassian make it very clear that they spent a lot of time thinking about what their partners would taste like and how they might go about finding out for sure.
Azriel’s cock strained behind his pants, aching so fiercely he could hardly think. He prayed she didn’t peer down. Prayed she didn’t understand the shift in his scent.
He had only allowed himself these thoughts in the dead of night. Because he knows it’s a fool’s hope. He never thinks about this as a viable path! Had only allowed his hand to fist his cock and think about her then, when even his shadows had gone to sleep again a recognition of the separation between him and his shadows. How that beautiful face might appear as he entered her, what sounds she’d make. See above: Nessian and Feysand are just as dirty and graphic (especially Nessian) and Rhys and Cassian are JUST AS WORSHIPFUL of their partners.
Elain bit her lower lip, and it took every ounce Azriel’s restraint to keep from putting his own teeth there.
“I should go,” Elain said, but made no move to leave. Again, they are BOTH cognizant, I think, of the risks and dynamics at play here.
“Yes,” he said, his thumb sweeping in long strokes along the side of her throat.
Her arousal drifted up to him, and his eyes nearly rolled back in his head at the sweet scent. He’d beg on his knees for a chance to taste it Rhys’s WHOLE THING is that he kneels before Feyre in reverence. But Azriel just stroked her neck again. SJM repeatedly uses the scent of arousal as a way to confirm sexual interest beyond a shadow of a doubt.
Elain shuddered, drifting closer. So close one deep breath would brush her breasts against his chest. She looked up at him, her face so trusting and hopeful and open that he knew she had no idea that he had done unspeakable things that sullied his hands far beyond their scars. I personally think this is Azriel being self-deprecating. I think that Elain is a seer, and probably has some idea of what Azriel does. Does this mean he puts her on a pedestal or that he views her as pure? It’s possible, but I think Azriel views most people whom he loves as pure compared to himself in one way or another— even Cassian. There is a line I’ll cite eventually where Rhys muses on the similarities between himself and Azriel, since Rhys is the only person Azriel allows to see the full scope of his rage. Ditto with the pedestal.
Such terrible things that it was a sacrilege same story as my point above on the word immaculate, but again I do totally admit that it’s a strange word. I just think that we have had so little of Azriel’s perspective that we can’t really say whether this is a perversion of his connection to Elain or if this is a regular sort of attitude for him for his fingers to touch her skin, tainting her with his presence.
But he could have this. This one moment, and maybe a taste, and that would be it. AND THAT WOULD BE IT. HE DOESN’T THINK IT WILL GO FURTHER!
“Yes,” Elain breathed, like she read the decision. You fucking go Elain get that ass Just this taste in the dead of the longest night of the year, where only the Mother interesting choice of words given Nesta’s association with the Mother and Nesta’s apparent tacit acceptance of Azriel’s feelings for Elain (more on that later) might witness them.
Azriel’s hand slid up her neck, burying in her thick hair. Tilting her face the way he wanted it. Elain’s mouth parted slightly, her eyes scanning his before flirting shut.
Offer and permission. OFFER AND PERMISSION. ELAIN WANTS THE SHADOWSINGER D!!!!!
He nearly groaned with relief and need as he lowered his head toward hers.
Azriel. And suddenly, the one time they both are comfortable with how they’re being seen (that Azriel is being seen by no one else BUT Elain, that Elain is finally being seen intimately, by someone, in the dark, namely, AZRIEL)
Rhys’s voice thundered through him, halting him mere inches from Elain’s sweet mouth.
Azriel. So if you were to ask me what the biggest sign of Elriel’s longevity in this chapter is, it is this: that they did not kiss. SJM built a very tightly worded and wound tension around this moment with her language, and.  the fact that it is not fulfilled is frustrating, right? We know that he touched the knob of her spine - we know that she shivered. For that level of intimacy not to end in a kiss, means something. Rhys could easily have interrupted them after their lips had already touched, and if this relationship were a device serving another, that’s what would have happened.
SJM knows that the tension is built and unfulfilled, and I think she also knows that this wouldn’t have been the right time for them to have their first kiss - which is what I think many readers have noticed in so many words. Where my thoughts differ is that I think SJM is walking a line between romantically coding the moment AND acknowledging that this moment is not ideal, and that it doesn’t deserve to be fulfilled satisfyingly, especially given Azriel’s self-loathing. MORE LATER :) Which should maybe be my catchphrase.
Also, them not kissing can’t just be about the fact that it’s a bonus chapter. You can’t make that argument about their not-kiss and then argue that the interaction with Gwyn is essential to the coming story. Which, I think it is significant, by the way, I’m just not sure how yet :P
Unrelenting command filled his name, and Azriel looked up. Rhysand stood atop the staircase. Glowering down at them.
My office. Now.
Rhys vanished, and Azriel was left standing before Elain, who still awaited his kiss. His stomach twisted as he pulled his hand away from her hair and stepped back. Forced himself to say, “This was a mistake.” UGH. The capital P Pain.
She opened her eyes, hurt and confusion warring there before she whispered, “I’m sorry.” See, this reaction makes me think that she is not as aware of his feelings as he thinks she is. That she later returns the necklace (or did she?) reinforces this. I think that if she was certain how he felt about her, she would be frustrated and maybe angry in the way that she has responded to Feyre’s comments about her mating bond with Lucien, not hurt and confused.
“You don’t — Don’t apologize,” he managed to say. “Never apologize. It’s I who should...”  He shook his head, unable to stand the bleakness he’d brought to her expression. “Goodnight.” But at least it definitely confirms her feelings to Azriel.

KHR - Chapter 1: The guy from Italy
Very first page and I already have questions that can only occur in retrospect.
Aside from laughing at the juxtaposition of a cutesy Reborn in this serious-looking setting :p, if I'm remembering right Tsuna's existence was supposed to be a secret? Am I mixing up fanon and canon? The two randos seem to know all about him and what Reborn taking a mission to Japan means. As though Tsuna is widely known and considered to be in the running for the position (without his knowledge of course). Interesting. Me mixing up fanon and canon? Retcon? Who knows :p Does it matter? Nope. Empathizing with Tsuna straight of the bat, 'lost because of him', yeah right, what a joke. There's no way that one player is that detrimental, especially if he's that disliked - they wouldn't put him in an important position. (granted the other team would totally aim for him, but that's on them lol) With the time Tsuna has at school and only a one-sided, distant crush to keep him afloat I don't blame him for skipping. 'If you keep skipping school...how do you expect to succeed in life?'  'I dunno…' Tsuna being relatable. Nana, in this economy school won't help him much lol - also bold talk from her, maybe Tsuna will marry rich like you? Tbh, her 'enjoy life' speech is cute - I like this early Nana, she seems more mischievous than the space-cadet we come to know her as later on - this one also seems to tease Tsuna more kindly...so far. Reborn just shows up, knocks Tsuna out (when he naturally freaks out at a strange child appearing in the room) and then assumedly talks to Nana whose child's just been beaten unconscious in front of her...and it goes...well? Nana…. Tsuna of course thinks he dreamed it up, who wouldn't. Treats the whole situation with natural disbelief. I don't blame Kyoko, hearing a toddler say he's in the mafia would be cute if it were an actual child. Reborn passing judgement on teen crushes really shows his age. All teen drama is probably so tiring to him. Omg, the slow motion panels and 'Reborn!' so dramatic and fun :D (interesting that he says it in english - but that's for the pun) Omg, I forgot the guy on the scooter and Tsuna falling through the trees...so when he asks Kyoko to be his girlfriend he's not only in his underwear, but he fell out of a tree, on top of Mochida and is covered in food, twigs, leaves and blood. Of course she ran away. I'm amazed she recognized him. Too bad they didn't keep 'sneezing out a bullet' throughout the manga, but understandable given the switch from comedy into more serious plot. (would have still been funny) How and why does Reborn have photos of Vongola Heirs' gruesome deaths? (the 'how' is probably Viper) 'The only one left is you' he says like a liar. 'Retired early' is that what they call it? Oof, poor Tsuna and Kyoko, this class is a true trial, peak school drama where people want to see a show. Tho it seems like it was Mochida who blabbed, Kyoko stayed mum? Their schoolmates sure are making a procession of it all, Kyoko looks super uncomfortable. 'God might forgive scum like you, but I Mochida will mot! I will punish you!' So dramatic. Some chuunibyou samurai fantasies there hm? Hm? Hana sure flipped a switch from 'boys have their own way of doing things' to 'pig' fast, granted he just called Kyoko a prize - shouted it publically at that - so understandable. This is the beginnings of our familiar harsh Hana. Kyoko has to be held back from attacking Mochida like a true Sasegawa. Wish she kept more of that fighting spirit later on, would have loved to see that AU (fanfic is there to save me!). Mochida has that superiority-inferiority complex - he's a Kendo captain, he shouldn't have to rig anything. The very fact that the competition is a kendo match on his turn with his team is already stacking the deck. How dramatic of him to over-plan lol, is he that threatened by Tusna? Tsuna escapes, of course. And, naturally, Reborn finds him to shoot him. Some of these panels make it seem like Tsuna is leaving his body behind Bleach style. Wow, Tsuna actually broke the shinai with his head and still head-butted Mochida - this is small potatoes in comparison to later arcs, but still, I'm loving it. Rips out his hair and roars '100 points!' (there's actually blood splatter in the panel) silence and then the school body is in stitches, Tsuna turns their expected show around. Really brings to mind 'Teenagers' by MCR 'they could care less as long as someone will bleed' XD Unfortunately for Mochida it took all of his hair to be worth one point. Lol Tusna, of course Kyoko thinks it was a joke - who wouldn't think you did it on a dare or for a bet or prank? With the way he looked he should be happy that's all she thought. Tsuna's grateful for Reborn's version of help for the first time and Reborn is smug...after that dramatic and cool close to a chapter we ofc need a a fun disaster ending so that's what we get because this is a comedy still <3

YALL CALLED THAT SHIT
i liked ms. jenn and ricky’s moment. i loved josh’s acting in this scene because it’s just so well done. like doesn’t seem like he’s acting at all and it translates so well in this scene. it was very heartfelt and such a mature moment for ricky. so reflective. i love ricky
second chances GAVE ME CHILLS the whole staging, the vocals, the core four. CHILLS. the acting from all of them for this song WAS INCREDIBLE. it was so simple but really made the scene. i’m also a sucker for songs structured like this. with like the rounds and the switching lyrics over top of each other. LOVE.
ok literally all of them booing when lily and antoine showed up sENT ME because me too THE FUCK. antoine saying “big red. you were also in it” mADE ME SNORT. ricky literally shooing them out made me laugh and lily’s whirling turn and ricky like startling back a bit made me laugh. i hate lily but her confession was literally me. like i like his big brown eyes and his big brown hair too you ain’t special bitch. antoine’s thumbs up was SO FUNNY. andrew was hilarious in this role.
also i didn’t love that they were like well fuck the menkies after that was a major plot point of the season but like also i get it. just being like MEH the stress isn’t worth it. EJ’S SPEECH HES LITERALLY VOICE BREAK JUST THE FUCKING GROWTH THAT HES HAD I LOVE HIM
jennzzarra flirting in front of the kids?? kinda cute ngl. also am i muted? SENT ME. also love that howie is just chilling there while they’re talking about dropping out. KOURT SAID LETS BURN THOSE RESULTS
benjamin being BOLD BOLD good for him
big star nini?? good for her!
ashlyn being like YIKES i’m sorry i didn’t realize you thought of ej that way and her being like hahah ok... wait WHAT? but i KNEW ash was going to progress that along somehow. like obvs ej and gina were sulking and ashlyn HAD to be the one to step in. she do be the #1 portwell warrior. thank you for your service ma’am
i will only allow ricky and lily to be a thing IF it’s a summer fling, if it means antoine gets to stay around and if it pushes rini back together and if none of that happens then wtf is even the point of pairing those two up. but we already know ricky is a sucker for misunderstood competitive women (minus nini)
GINA CHASING AFTER EJ!!! HIS FACE OF JUST OH GOD PLEASE LET ME BE HEARTBROKEN!! YOU GOT BAD INTEL!! THE CAN I... CAN YOU WHAT? CAN I KISS YOU with her little giddy laugh and her smile GIRL YOURE GLOWING and then ej’s swallow as he turns to fully look at her. WILL YOU BE MY FIRST KISS!!!! HIM JUST SLOWLY SMILING FROM EAR TO EAR AND DROPPING HIS BAG TO WALK TO HER AND THEN THEM RUNNING WHEN THEY GET CLOSER AND GINA’S LITTLE GIGGLING I CANNOT EVEN
i am so so SO HERE FOR SUMMER FLUFFY IN LOVE PORTWELL
overall am i a little sad it was so short? yes. do i understand the insane restrictions they were working under? yes. am i confident about a season 3? absolutely. i am HERE for a summer season.
anyways PORTWELL IS CANNON!!

"come on, nate, we should be good people … wouldnt it be nice to wake up in the morning and not feel like a fucking piece of shit?" so this is shiv, trying to make this decision to be a good person, bc she Knows she isnt, but of course she keeps being a bad person with nate, bc she already feels like a piece of shit and she already expects herself to keep going back to that and its who she decides she has to be. later on she'll shut down and feign ignorance to how deeply fucked up the company and her whole life is, but for now she can be open and honest and say "im a fucking piece of shit. i dont want to be, but i am."
"you tell yourself you're a good person but you're not a good person" reflects more on kendall than it does shiv i think, bc almost immediately after this he says "im the real you", which can be read as him saying "im the Actually good version of you", but he also knows this not to be true… etc etc. but it also totally Does reflect on shiv, because shes so wrapped up in making other people Think shes a good person, and making other people think she thinks shes a good person, but the honesty we saw with nate earlier shows that deep down she does know and conceptualize her standing within the world
"oh, look, shiv, do you think that stealing is what good people do? stealing? cheating at monopoly?" this is objectively silly and thats the point, how roman makes jokes out of how he actually feels to cover it up, ugh i dont have to go through all of this just look at the tvtropes page for the sad clown trope and you'll get the idea. in any case, shiv actually said, "i was only stealing so i could win", in this case saying "i did what i had to to win dads affection" and roman fired back with what he perceived to be a weak point, shivs morality. also roman feels like something was taken from him here, might have something to do with how he brings up what shiv did with gerri -- see romans issues with sexuality and further analysis of specifically the revocation of agency(? idrk if thats the word im looking for) in his sexuality. Or something
"greg, dont be an asshole, you dont have principles" is a comedic sort of juxtaposition; "dont be an asshole" and "you dont have principles" are, like, opposites, since not being an asshole implies having some principles. what tom is demanding here is a double standard and loyalty to a class which, for a long time, greg has not belonged to. essentially hes trying to make sure greg, known slimy bitch, wont betray him, aka work for toms gain, which in itself calls back to that theme of rich entitlement, that people in the upper class have a simultaneous philosophy of "make your own fucking pile" and work solely for ur own best interest, but expect those around you to serve you. thats where logan excels, he understands that everyone else has the same philosophy he does and distrusts them as a result
"i cleaned up your mess … and im a bad person?" again, this calls back to this idea of pure loyalty to the upper class. since the lower class isnt "real", being horrible to them and/or covering up that behavior is okay, justified even. but to be part of the upper class, it is Good to do whatever nasty stuff you have to do to beat someone else. being good, then, isnt about morality, its about power, maybe. logan has cleaned up kendalls mess, and hes supposedly a good person for it. but thats backwards, covering up the truth of someones death to blackmail ur son isnt (morally) good behavior. and that is, at this point, the language that kendall is speaking. logan isnt speaking the same language
"i dont know. im not a good person. … im bad" this is pretty obvious. kendalls been ruminating in the fact that hes a horrible person for the past 2 seasons and now he says it outright. something something black and white thinking
"do you want a deal with the devil?" literally anything i say about this interaction has already been said im moving on
"lifes not knights on a horseback. its a number on a piece of paper its a fight for the knife in the mud." see everything i said earlier about logan speaking the language of power, not morality. "lifes not knights on a horseback" is ofc about not saving people and making ur own pile etc. the iconography is particularly romantic (er, anti-romantic), which is interesting considering logans many weird fucked up relationships with various women. its also associated with medieval times, which. i dont know if that means anything, usually if succession is referencing history its about greek/roman history, but. yknow. "its a number on a piece of paper" references business ofc and with "its a fight for a knife in the mud" im gonna go out on a limb and say this is referencing boar on the floor? pigs are associated with mud, and boar in the floor was something about class struggle. Uh. ya
^^^ im saying so many words i dont know if any of them make sense. i should goooo do my homework Ya. then take a shower and continue my rewatch then go beddy bye
