You donā€™t understand, when I was at my worst with my depression, and every time I looked up at the night sky and grew scared of how small we are, how alone we might be, how short our time is, how I couldnā€™t comprehend infinity, how everything will end eventually, how everything I see way out there is long gone, I would panic. I would break down. The stars themselves scared me. But one day doctor who was put on Netflix and a comment on a deviant post reminded me of a deal I made with another user. If I watch doctor who theyā€™ll watch the time travel show I thought was cool. I watched it on a whim, Iā€™m not sure Iā€™d even encountered it much on tumblr yet. But it made me feel less small. I began to actually look at the night sky without abject terror. I thought about how if you looked at it more like, idk, a learning adventure? When you heard new things about it, it wasnā€™t as scary. Something that could inspire writers to create such adventures and have normal people characters tag alongā€¦ I got less scared. When everything started being galaxy print I thought it was pretty and not horrifying. Itā€™s long been a trendy pattern of the last decade or so, perhaps a bit less, but I still see cool looking art inspired by images from space telescopes that were made to have different colors for invisible wavelengths so that humans could seeā€¦ idk. It makes me happy. Itā€™s like Iā€™m less scared, and now I donā€™t even feel like I need there to be life on other planets for me to stop feeling alone, because there is so much life on this one! Even if I was the only human on earth, I still wouldnā€™t be alone just from being on this life filled planet. And Iā€™m not the only human.
Thatā€™s not an experience Iā€™ve had from many stories, it was one of those things that you encounter at just the right time for your view of the world to be changed for the better. Something that lodges itself inside of you and makes you better than you were before. Iā€™ll always remember it fondly because of that. I know there is a lot I never watched and maybe one day Iā€™ll catch up, but the fact is that what I DID see was enough to change me as a person. To make my existential dread just a little bit less all encompassing and inspire more curiosity in me.

some venting: on parent fandom acceptance and the danny phantom tag
Honestly, the worst thing that certain Danny Phantom fans have done on this site to other fans is say that dp x dc is its own fandom. It's not. There's no such thing as a "crossover fandom" unique unto itself. You can say that people are too into this crossover or too into this au or whatever, but people who are fans of DC and Danny Phantom are into Danny Phantom and DC. That's just. What it is. Both properties are cool and combining them adds more characters and settings to play with together. All lore leads back to one or both parent fandoms, because those are the source material.
"Well the DC crossovers are so differentā€”" Please. There have been Danny Phantom and Teen Titans crossovers since Danny Phantom was airing. I have read crossovers with House, NCIS, Supernatural, and probably anything else ffn had to bother with. One of my favorite works is a Gravity Falls fancomic that I still hope will update one day. No one cared how it was crossover then. In fact, I would say that we were one of the most crossed-over properties I knew of at the time that wasn't a SuperWhoLock-type popular show. DC crossovers are not new, they're just popular now.
"Well, it's got its own lore! >:(" Oh, like the vivisection aus? The Full Ghost aus? The corpse aus? The Danny-is-a-portal aus?? Tell me more about how new it is for an au to have its own unique lore. Love to hear it. Definitely it's the same for every author with no variation. There's for sure no unique takes from fans at every step of the way.
"Well, there's so MUCH of it." Tell me more about how other people having fun in their own way is your problem. Go ahead. Tell me more about how other people doing their own thing is personally horrible to you. It's really terrible when people do things you don't want to engage with, isn't it. It has to be separate from your fun. There is definitely no place where they blend; it has to be segregated altogether.
"But they're doing it in MY tag!" Oh, the Danny Phantom tag? The one with Danny in it? Where he's a main character? In the art and fic where he features??
The result is exactly as you'd expect; people who would be interested in joining the Danny Phantom community and making art and fic long-term because they like the characters and the show are getting sidelined because they're failing to like the show in the 'right way'. People who might love to join in and participate in community events and discussion and bring new ideas and aus to the table are being told that they like something completely different than the show in a way that, you know, somehow the original and extremely malleable fandom isn't??
I've been following multiple Danny Phantom blogs (or their author blogs that used to post dp fic) on and off on different accounts since 2015. I used to read Danny Phantom fanfic on ffn on my ipod touch during lunch or on my laptop once I made it home from school years before I even made a tumblr. I used to look forward to Dannymay and Ectober and I think I was even on tumblr the year that Narwhals started the Dannypocalypse?? (I for sure only saw the fallout though. I think I was busy that day)
I don't even open the Danny Phantom tag anymore. I still follow the people I follow...minus the people who've talked crap about fans who like Danny Phantom wrong, apparently, and I hope that good art comes my way without the constant underlying message that we're a scourge on our own fandom, I guess.
Congrats. There are no Danny Phantom fans who find the show through this form of crossover content. You've convinced them there's no point. They have their own tag, their own headcanons, their own fics, and their own culture. Are you happy now? Are you proud to be the fandom that doesn't want new fans? Is it nice, that people won't want to see your art and fics now, despite being hungry for new content? Did it help? Are you better for it? Did you maintain that canon purity you craved??
I saw a supernatural x danny phantom art piece today that kicked ass. It's from an artist I really, really like, who makes a lot of great stuff. I've bought their merch before and was excited all the way through their creative journey. No one tried to jump on them for crossover posting in the Danny Phantom space, using lore that's unique to that crossover.
But it's not about the crossover itself, is it.

You are aware that Ace and Sabo are brothers. That ship is incest. It would be best if you took it down because of how problematic that is
Warning, this turned into a rant
They are adopted/sworn brothers, so the ship is not technically incest.
If that ship bothers you, several One Piece ships should bother you in between adopted brothers or sworn brothers, but I have seen zero complaints. This includes Buggy/Shanks, those two were raised as brothers as far as we know, and Marco/Ace, who became sworn brothers. Remember, Ace joined The Whitebeard Pirates, AKA the Sons of Whitebeard. They all are sworn brothers. So let's please be coherent in your hypocrisy
Isn't this Tumblr? I can't be that old because I remember the heyday of Superwholock. The two most popular Supernatural ships were Destiel and WinCest. Remember, they were so popular that the Supernatural show even addressed this in its meta episodes. What the hell happened? And I remember the Ouran High School Host Club speech where the twins said the whole appeal behind them is when you have two attractive guys who struggle between their attraction and their friendship. Plus, because they're twins, it makes their relationship taboo so even more intriguing. So they were hyper-aware of what they were doing with their whole queerbating/twincest thing, and Tumblr ate that crap up.
It's one of those things where it's fiction, so it's not real, so it's okay because no actual person is being harmed by whatever problematic content is portrayed in whatever fictional media. I personally have zero problems with the most problematic content. But that doesn't include all problematic content. I do have lines when it comes to child characters and lollies. That's why there are rules on my blog. But I can also separate fantasy from reality, and if you can't, you probably need to talk to someone about that because that's a problem.
Again, seriously, what the hell happened to the fandom culture on Tumblr? Why are the moral purity police everywhere? I joined fandoms and Tumblr to escape the oppressive Bible thumpers that I grew up around. Why am I now encountering more oppressive moral policing online from fandom idiots than I do from the Church Karens in real life? I live in the conservative Bible Belt. Those Church Karens are everywhere and in everyone's business
Sorry for my rant. I am tired, and I'm still trying to figure out what the hell happened. I've been on Tumblr on and off since 2010, and I feel like I hardly recognize this community anymore. Now, I have been made aware of the anti-shippers/ anti-fandom movement, and I know it's not just a minor thing because this is something I have found multiple academic research papers on. I'll link a good one. But I pray it's something else cuz these are just kids who don't know better at the moment. I hope one day they will realize this behavior is the equivalent of the Boomers blaming all of the Gen Z and Millennial behaviors. They don't like on violent video games. Again, sorry for the rant

Long time listener, new caller...:) I have read your posts since the Plant days. I've always wondered why you fell down this rabbit hole. Now how... why?
Iā€™ve always liked William and Harry. Started following the BRF more closely in November 2010 because of William and Kateā€™s engagement. Came to really like Kate and I saw bits of myself in her.
Probably what I liked the most about Kate in those days was her sense of style and dress. In a world that was consumed with presenting and dressing young women for the male gaze, here was someone that dressed for herself and wore the kind of clothes that I liked to wear. Iā€™ve always said that if it werenā€™t for Kate making modesty cool again - eg sleeves, higher necklines, longer hemlines, long trousers, and blazers - then I wouldnā€™t have had anything to wear in my 20s.
So then the more I paid attention to the royal family, the more I started to hear and see rumors and gossip about them. That ended up being more fascinating than the ā€œKate wore those shtupid wedges that The Queen hates!ā€ articles. I started diving into the rumors - where did they come from? Who started them? Why did they start them? How did they start them? - which led me down into the world of PR and media relations.
Then Harry met Meghan and the PR around William, Harry, and Kate exploded. The rumors and gossip proliferated in ways I hadnā€™t expected or seen before. Then Harry and Meghan got engaged, I got a lot of icks, lurked in the DM comments section, discovered the ā€œthree blind miceā€ tumblrs (Skippy, Felix, and JD), checked it out, and I was home.
(I had tumblr long before then - Iā€™ve been a tumblr since the platform launched because it was the creative fandom artsy side of the internet (predating Superwholock) and that was the kind of stuff I was into.)
Found Soap, Plant, Empress, Sassy and a few other tumblrs through Skippy that were much more my speed. Been here ever since. Kept tracking and following all the rumors and gossip for fun.
Then the pandemic hit. I needed a new lockdown project because the movies were closed and I couldnā€™t go anywhere. I decided to take all my scribbles and links on BRF rumors and gossip, put them all in a spreadsheet and start tracking if they were true or not and track where they came from to see how they got ā€œintoā€ royal-watching. The side of tumblr I was on started talking more openly about PR, rumors, and gossip and after sending in a bunch of anons to other blogs about rumor tracking, realized there was a lot of interest in that kind of stuff so here I am. And because the root of most gossip, including rumors and theories/conspiracy theories, involves PR, the analytical side kind of fit in neatly with that.
The rumors and gossip have died down - itā€™s not as frenzied as it used to be back in the 2016-2018 era so itā€™s a much quieter and not-as-frequently updated spreadsheet now as it was in the past. Ive still got the spreadsheet but because there isnā€™t a lot of chaos in the BRF anymore, there isnā€™t as much gossip and rumors, and the gossip and rumors there are, they tend to spread from the astrology/tarot side of the fandom. Thereā€™s absolutely nothing wrong with that at all!
One final observation: Iā€™ve noticed in the rumor/gossip tracking world is that thereā€™s a lot of projection lately - so itā€™s more theories than rumors. I think itā€™s reflective of the current state of the BRF; the people who were once more freely speculating about the BRF or more freely trying to use gossip or public pressure to force particular decisions or actions from the BRF no longer have access to that kind of insider information to be as effective (or as punishing, perhaps) with their gossip and rumors.
I call my spreadsheet ā€œMythbustersā€ and it has 1,874 entries - so almost 1,900 rumors or pieces of gossip. 861 of them have been resolved; most are busted as false just with the passage of time.

In light of all the bitching about the upcoming patch, I was so happy to hear youā€™re also notā€¦ mad at Larian, I guess? I was wondering if Iā€™m missing something, because for all its bugs, the game is fine the way it is, to me. More than fine, itā€™s a great game, the first that really means something to me since Dishonored. Idk, Iā€™m literally over here just vibing, glad Iā€™m not alone in that šŸ˜Œ
I noticed there's been a trend in recent years, I think started by those media that truly DID become horribly disappointing as it went on (last season of GOT, for example), and people started just... like
There is a phase most media get where they are the Best Ever, they Can Do No Wrong. And then one day that phase ends, and suddenly, that media Can Do No Right. Everything is a mistake, everything is wrong, everything is an attempt to cater to one group of fans (who are, of course, the wrong group to cater to) and/or an attempt to spite one group of fans. I think that in this day and age, people sometimes don't understand the difference between consuming media critically, I.E., using critical thinking to understand the themes, plot, and characters, and consuming media critically, I.E. criticizing everything the creators say and do.
So instead of looking for simple explanations, I.E., "different trainings and specialties mean that the division of labor at Larian has a team that works on new animations, but that team is not the same team responsible for bug fixes, so getting new animations from the former isn't why the latter hasn't repaired Polearm Master or Shield Bash or Raphael and Mol's scene yet" they instead assume "Larian only cares about Astarion and Halsin* and are catering to their fans again at the expense of literally everything else"
*The idea that Halsin fans are receiving any kind of special treatment is laughable, but that is very much the accusation being made- i want to see their reaction when they open up patch 6 and see that their fave has new kiss animations too tbh. As for the new scenes datamined for Halsin, those are all in response to complaints made by people who HATE Halsin, not complaints by his fans. A platonic confession scene? A version of the post-breaking the curse scene that doesn't involve flirting? The only two that were made for Halsin fans were fixing his post-Drow dialogue and the ability to go with him at the end, and the latter hasn't been fully implemented yet (you can get a flag saying you chose him, but you don't get to tell him and have him respond yet). But I have seriously digressed.
IDK, it just seems like we're in the phase of fandoms where, since the initial joy of discovering what the game has to offer has worn off, people are getting their dopamine from getting angry instead, and that means making a game of who can have the best hot takes, who or what is the most problematic and deserving of shunning, what have the creators done to fuck over us poor fans, etc.
There are many legitimate criticisms to be made against Larian, I want to be clear here- their treatment of Wyll's character has been horrific, and the interactions between Durge and Astarion should have been given for ALL characters. It is appalling that they have let Minthara's romance be bugged to the point that some people can only trigger it by modding the game because the flags are bugged and that they have allowed Halsin's voice lines to be bugged SINCE LAUNCH causing many to think they don't exist. All of these things deserve to be criticized. But ascribing malice to things like having separate work teams on the game, or the pile-on people started over that "we fixed it so a glitch can't cause Gale to leave your party" patch... Yeah.
It's never a good sign when a fandom starts to collectively chase the high that comes from being The Angriest. It doesn't seem to be as prevalent on here as on Twitter, thankfully (ironically, speaking as someone who was on this site since before Superwholock, the most toxic parts of Tumblr moved to Twitter after the porn ban, and now it's mostly rational people on here) but we are rapidly sliding towards the "do you people even like this game or do you like the version of it you created in your head?" phase of fandom that everyone dreads.

I made the mistake of rewatching Sherlock because I never did finish it back in the day (I was -clenches fist- seething over the queerbaiting and rage quit after not fully watching episode 1 of s4) and I'm here to make my side hyperfixation (what year is this??? Who am I???) Tumblr's problem. The more I sit with s4, the less I like it šŸ˜‚ There were pieces and elements I liked, but overall, it left a bad taste in my mouth. Forgive me if any or all if these points have been talked to death, I missed all the discourse and I'm hella late, but I need to flail and send my thoughts into the void because what even WAS that season? I can't believe I avoided it for years, got drawn in by a couple of tiktoks making fun (affectionately) of superwholock Era and That Scene about the fucking phone charger port, binged all of it, only to be left with..... that. Not nearly as disappointing or rage inducing as spn's ending but by God, did it leave a hole in me. So please ignore my rambling thoughts as I slap them down here for my own sanity.
ā€¢ First and foremost, what - and I can't stress this enough - the fuck was UP with the assassination of John's entire character???? What was that??? Why????
ā€¢ Related to that point - I can appreciate the angst point and potential it provides, as I'm reading many, many fics, but AYO WHY didn't anyone rip John an entire new one for that beat down he did on Sherlock????? Hello???? 911?????
ā€¢ Tell me why everything felt so stilted and borderline icy. Like I get the high emotions and shit, but after a certain point... šŸ˜ was there a falling out between Benedict and Martin that I'm not aware of? Did they just try to ungay everything so hard and were so pissed at the audience picking up everything THAT THEY PUT???? into this show and their interactions that they just hit the brakes hard enough to make everything feel weird???
ā€¢ A lot of it felt weird. Off kilter a little. Forced in some places, toned down in others (and toned down where it shouldn't have been), a nod to ships but weirdly/hatefully??? Idk if that makes sense. Like the whole Sherlock and Molly phone call (I do not mean any hate to this ship, I really hope it doesn't come off this way. Not my cup of tea but you are valid). Why was Molly so upset BEFORE the call? Did I miss something? Also I don't personally think or feel she'd still have those feelings for him??? I??? I am bamboozled.
ā€¢ to that whole point, Eurus was.... Hmm. Mmmm. She was. Something. (Confused derogatory)
ā€¢ I like Mary as a character. I also hated her. (Definitely biased by my shipper trash ass self for johnlock, I'm sorry). Wtf were those messages, please. Edit: AND ANOTHER THING. John's reaction to Sherlock's death - awful, gut wrenching, beautiful, my heart breaks with and for him, utterly devasting. John's reaction to Mary's death - had me sitting there likešŸ§ā€ā™€ļø(it was weird. so weird. awkward. w h y. (we know why, but also the acting choices were Something TM, in both cases! for different reasons!) i'm sorry i just can't get past my anger and put off-ness with mary, fun as she could be)
ā€¢ why did mycroft and John switch roles šŸ˜ pls. The last episode was just. So Much. The lackluster responses from John, to John, to Sherlock, between them, like.... hello???? Who are these people?? Help me. Moriarty saved me for a brief shining moment tho, God bless.
There's more I could spew, but that's what's sitting right at the top of my head. I guess all this just to say, if a show runner/writer really just fucking hates the audience they got (instead of the one they wanted), they probably shouldn't have fucking become a show runner/writer in the first place. Either hand it to someone who can actually handle it and listens, or fuck off. I will never understand when shows and plots and characters gets kamikaze'd because of a show runner being pissy and egotistical. Like ????? Grow up. Learn from Bryan Fuller and Hannibal or something.
Sorry for all the rambling, bless anyone who reads this and makes sense of it šŸ˜‚

Hello! :] I saw your post recently regarding the pervasive feeling of shame in newer fans re: Danganronpa, and it really resonated. I wanted to offer my two cents as a fandom old/armchair fandom archeologist that's hopefully a little heartening:
I remember back in 2012/2013 when Danganronpa was beloved, during the height of the SomethingAwful TL days. It was a genuinely fun time to be into things, especially as people were getting excited for an EN release, something that I do think the fandom deserves a little credit in making happen. I was there for the UDG release, DR3 anime, and the lead-up to v3's release, and unfortunately, I think the fact that all three of those entries were in some ways polarizing effectively memory-holed a lot of people into believing Danganronpa was never "good" to begin with, which makes it a lot easier to pick out its flaws and give it a bit of a weird reputation now.
(As a tangent, but some more context that might help: Danganronpa also got really big on my neck of the woods in Tumblr during one of the big Homestuck hiatuses. Back in the day there was a lot of fandom crossover, which I don't really think is the case nowadays, but I think for people that were either in both fandoms and had negative experiences, or people outside who disliked either/or, they've been inextricably linked together as part of a particular "time" in Tumblr/internet history that isn't remembered fondly. So, I have a theory that a lot of secondhand Danganronpa disdain comes from misplaced disdain for the other Big Thing at the time.
This also overlapped with the tail end of the big SuperWhoLock era to my memory, which is usually much more focused on which discussing Tumblr history. Which is a shame, because I feel like this particular transitional era of Tumblr "fandom" history has been underdiscussed because of it!
None of this is excusing some of the things I've seen said about DR fans and the ways people have been iced out for liking it, but I find trying to understand the factors at play always helps my mind figure out how to process these things.)
However: time moves on. This isn't permanent. Having gone back and re-experienced the whole series some 5+ years removed, I was able to find joy in parts of the series that, while I was in the thick of a shift in fandom attitude, didn't appreciate as much as I think I should have. I didn't absolutely love everything, but I had so much fun, it almost felt like I was experiencing things again for the first time.
I want to believe the same thing will happen as we get some time removed, as people get nostalgic for things and get older and understand that you can love something flawed, criticize it, and not feel shame for it. I always welcome fresh faces discovering something for the first time, but I think that some day, a lot of older fans can come back and embrace it as well. Sometimes you need time and life and a few extra years on you. I'm living proof of it! :P
Of course, this is just one person's perspective from one slice of the fandom. But I remain hopeful. There really is nothing else quite like Danganronpa for me, warts and all. You don't have to post this publicly or anything if you don't want to, but I wanted to offer a little hope to go with your thoughts. :') and I hope you have a great day!
Oh man, I really really appreciate this message. I am really interested in the perspective of fans who have been here for so long, and I always feel a little out of my depth talking about old (read: 2018 and before) DR fandom because despite seeing a Lot of it in my blog-diving, I still wasn't there. It's genuinely wonderful to hear that it was beloved like that, even if only fully for the first two installments.
I HAVE noticed a weird amount of homestuck/dr crossover in my searches, so that totally makes sense! Hell, my first exposure to DR on tumblr was a homestuck blog I followed back in 2017/2018ish (for the artstyle, I haven't read homestuck) that also posted a lot about Kazuichi. That's super cool!
While I feel like today, there is at least a little bit of fondness (even if it is a little ironic) for superwholock days, I see very little talk of homestuck. And when I do, it is usually with the same flavour of "Wow that fandom was so crazy" as old-DR.
I think there is usually this reactionary retrospective on site-wide popular fandoms to some degree after they start to wane in size. I saw it when I was in the TMA fandom. That thing was a monster, and over all I felt more stressed there than I ever feel now with DR. And after it ended, and really even During those last few episodes, you could feel a level of distaste for the piece of media growing. Although it never really reached critical mass like DR.
Maybe its even more apparent with something like Steven Universe- when it was actively coming out there was so much disdain for it (from some people) and for the fandom. I was there, on the sidelines, but I saw it all and it wasn't fun. But after its finale and a couple years of silence, people now seem to have come around and realized, whoa, so much about all that discourse was way overblown. I feel like a couple years ago there could still have been this sense of "cringe" posting about steven universe, while today its a lot more neutral.
Of course, it's kind of weird to compare DR and SU, and the nature of outside of fandom perspectives on them is not the same. The level of disdain for people posting SU never reached the point of DR either. But if it's anything to go by, I feel like there is hope eventually for people to stop having an immediate knee-jerk reaction to it. To look back and realize, "hey, that was actually pretty good," or "I didn't really appreciate this the first time." Or even just "It's fine actually to have nuanced take on this piece of media I don't like that concludes with them still liking it." I feel like we already got a mini-version of that in 2020, but since that's when I joined I can't speak too much on it.
Small tangent aside, I really appreciate this. I also hope people can come back around to it, or at least appreciate that it made them or other people happy at the time c:

I am SO close to completing the superwholock circle. And so incredibly late yes
To further explain myself I joined tumblr for sherlock in like 2016, and a new world was discovered. I new about the other two shows in the triangular fandom reign of those days, but only superficially, I didnt really now much about them other than their titile, main charcters and a very foggy idea of what they were about. I never developed an interest, sherlock was a full time job at the time, remember season 4 was about to come out, the theories were wild.
Then, like yeeears later, came the pandemic, and I, much like everyone else, had too much free time on my hands, and spent quite some of it here. So I new the last season of supernatural was airing, and I randomly decided to watch it, without any context whatosever, just straight to season 15 because why not. We all now what happened, and there it went the next few years of my life being fixated on this old show, and the continuous drama was just that good.
Some time early this year, when i was finishing my months non stop The x files first watch, yes all through its 11 seasons and 2 movies, I needed something to fill that gap (and distract me a little bit from whatever those last txfs seasons was), so I put that show people here were talking so much about, Good Omens, without much expectation. And well, well, well, guess what happened. Anyways, thats how I came upon two amazing british actors, and let me tell you, yall fans were right.
So, now im watching all of david tennantā€™s work in chronological order (and michael sheenā€™s, but his I havent found an organized made list with links like the ones I found of dt) and Iā€™m a few short years away in his career from doctor who.
Rip me I would have loved 2014 tumblr.

I don't think that anti-fandom can really be blamed on kids being "cringe" and having an AU or OCs or ship that's far-fetched. I think it's due to a popularity treadmill. Things start getting pointed out as media ages, it may not have aged well, and instead of taking it into consideration they just blow the whole thing off and treat is as evil. This site is not good at nuance. Don't blame it on people having fun, blame it on the people who can't take "it's complex" (btw not trying to be rude!)
I think you misunderstood me. I dont care about people having fun, ive been vocally anti cringe culture for a long time now. I think everyone should do whatever they want forever. I think there is a certain group of individuals however who ignore a lot of the source material and then get angry that... its the source material.
Thats why i used marvel as an example in the tags. It was the biggest fandom on tumblr and arguably the wider internet when superwholock ran its course, and yet ive seen the same people who ran marvel blogs claim its the worst thing ever made and that anybody who likes it has terrible taste, as if they didnt... used to run with the URL stevelovesbucky or something. They become cold and mean and cyberbullies over something as inconsequential as blockbuster movies and you end up not with the critique they claim to be doing but just cyberbullying over other people liking the same thing they used to like. Except they didnt really like MARVEL, its more that they liked what their IDEA of marvel was. And theres nothing wrong with fanworks and fics, ive been in fandom all my life and I participate actively in those things too, its that they never actually liked whatever the source was, just the other people who did.
Theres a lot more examples I can think of that fit the same metric. Voltron, Steven Universe, Hamilton, hell I once saw someone get driven out of the Fallout fandom because they wrote a fic where their OC was a legion slave. Meanwhile, roman-style slavery has been a major theme in the Fallout universe since day 1! Thats a perfect example of what I'm saying: someone engaged in the actual source material, but it wasn't approved of by the folks who only liked Fallout aesthetically and not genuinely, because they were bullied and driven out for exploring problematic themes through the safe medium of fiction in the game series ABOUT exploring problemic themes through the safe medium of fiction
I dont have any issue whatsoever with people making fics and art and AUs and fanwork. My issue is with people who act like that fanwork is devoid of a source, and don't actually like the source at the end of the day, take the fanon as gospel, and then end up crucifying the source material and everyone who engages in it genuinely

despite being on tumblr at the height of superwholock and watching the other 2 shows, Iā€™ve never seen any Sherlock to this day
so I can confidently report the things I learned secondhand like 10 years ago:
Johnlock is definitely real despite John being married and Sherlock not being interested in anyone really. too concerned with being Smart and being mad at the hot priest guy from fleabag
those gifs of him swiping away manifestations of his thoughts are real somehow and not just that meme of a lady looking at equations
thereā€™s a secret good episode that somehow explains everything. this episode doesnā€™t exist
corollary to this one: itā€™s bad on purpose. to. make you think? for no discernible purpose?
he fakes his own death and they never explain how he managed to survive a fall off a building???
Sherlock deduced that someone was an alcoholic bc they didnā€™t put their phone charger in on the first try every time???? that is genuinely the funniest thing Iā€™ve ever heard. I didnā€™t see any jokes about it until relatively recently and that blew my fucking mind. thatā€™s WRITING.
there were only like 10 fucking episodes of the whole thing and it took just as many years to make. how
do not correct me <3
also seriously, what was the deal with johnlock. not to be like ā€˜my queerbait was betterā€™ but really, what was the hook with them? where is the spice? why did that ship have this website in a chokehold? I need to know

Meet the Mods!!
Here are your two mods for the 2024 Hoziernatural Event!
RAUKO
Rauko observed the Supernatural fandom from the Doctor Who and Sherlock sides of Superwholock for years before finally breaking down and watching the show in 2016 and beginning toĀ writeĀ andĀ drawĀ for it in 2018. Now, theyā€™re fully integrated, thereā€™s no escape, and theyā€™re not even mad about it.
Theyā€™ve been known to listen to Hozier on repeat while writing/painting and probably will not rest until they have a chapter, whole fic, or art inspired by every song in Hozierā€™s arsenal.Ā Here(Calthazar)Ā are(Destiel) a(Mary/Rowena) few(Destiel)Ā examples(Wincest).

SAM
Sam loves two things: gay angels and a good story. She's very happy that in the Supernatural fandom she can combine those two things together, which is why she's stuck around for so many years. Her gateway ship into the fandom was Destiel, but now she also loves a variety of rarepairs, especially if they're femslash. On Tuesdays, you can find her writing and/or banging her head against the keyboard, and on every other day you can find her reading a good book/fanfic while snuggling her cat.
Tumblr: @wanderingcas
AO3: quiettewandering
Those of you who were around last year may notice we're a mod short this time around. Sadly @petrichoravellichor had too much going on irl to be able to go through the whole event with us (though she did help a lot in the planning/re-design last month), and she will be sorely missed this round šŸ„ŗšŸ„ŗ
We can't wait til sign-ups open to see what new folks (and hopefully some old ones) join us this year!

Thoughts Iā€™m having as I/We prepare for OFMD S2 inspired by Conā€™s quote in Vanity Fair saying ā€˜it ā€œdoesnā€™t follow the expected routeā€
What is the expected route?! (/gen and /j)
As someone whose watched WWDITS from Season 1 and decided to come back to tumblr after the S3 finale (a time when the first in-show hints of Nandermo happened in what I consider the shows best 2 ep season-opener outside I think this S5 2 ep opener), I have personally learned itā€™s best to expect nothing from these shows.
And I donā€™t mean that negatively, I mean as much as I love fanart, fanfiction, meta and fan theories, when I get too into or invested in the plot lines created in our online space I tend to find the actual show a bit duller(?) less concerned with consistent plot lines and character arcs. (Or maybe just less obsessed than we are as the audience vs them as the creator). [[An example for myself was being upset at a lack of any development in S4 from choosing to ship Guillermo and Nadjia of to London at the end of S3, & reading some really fabulous theories of what that would have looked like from other viewers/fans in the year between.]]
I think the main reason for that - to me - is because these shows - OFMD, Good Omens, WWDITS, even Ted Lasso - at the end of the day are comedies. And the meta and ways we analyze and breakdown and hope for what the next season(s) will be are written with so much more drama and seriousness (which I love) than the show actually ever presented itself to have. (Or may have the budget and time for tbh)
[again this is mostly my reading of WWDITS over the years to help me prepare for whatever happens with OFMD this Fall]
Granted I was not into ā€˜online fandom worldā€™ when SPN or Sherlock were airing (I was a Marvel&Steven Universe teenager) so idk what experiencing SUPERWHOLOCK was like ā€˜liveā€™/in real time w/ years between seasons. But those were also dramas doing different things (and being less gay) than OURFLAGMEANSGOODOMENSINTHESHADOWS (what a mouth full) so *shrug*
Idk that this ramble has a point, I just had thoughts about making sure to temper my expectations both for myself and for the sake of not ā€œchastising the creatorsā€ ala Good Omens* when OFMD S2 starts airing.
I know most of us are just EXTREMELY grateful that another season of this show is real & probably will be happy with ~almost~ anything they decided to do.
*im very aware the folks who didnā€™t like GOS2 (the ending in particular) & are actively rude about it are a minority btw Iā€™m just using it as an example of expectation vs reality

Fanfic Etiquette Sunday
Oh man okay, let's rock and roll y'all.
So my friend got... well, this ask, and answered it honestly.
tl;dr the question: Just say you don't want unsolicited criticism, you're asking for it if you post in a public forum tl;dr the answer: lol that's not how this works tl;dr the replies: Your viewpoint is toxic and you need a thicker skin and to grow up and just accept it, you're driving readers away
Okay. Okay. Let's start with
"just say you don't want unsolicited criticism, you're asking for it if you post in an open forum"-
No, posting in an open forum does not automatically mean I want criticism. This isn't a Creative Writing class, it's the Internet, where we share things with each other because we want to, not because we have to. Do you also criticize every meme? Every cute animal pictures? Do I need to start putting a disclaimer on my shitposts that I don't want feedback on whether or not they're cracky enough?
Fanfiction. Is. A. Hobby. People aren't out here sharing their work for free just to hear about all the ways you don't like it. If I think something I've written needs criticism, I'm going to ask the people close to me, who I trust to be honest with their opinions, how I can fix it. I am not going to trust randomusername69420 who thinks I've written the entire story wrong and presents their own version of it and says I should write that instead. And yes, I've gotten that before. I've had readers "challenge" me to write something I have no interest in. News flash, y'all aren't my writing teachers. I'm here to write, not to be graded on my work.
If you're someone who likes unsolicited crit? Cool, go crazy, you do you, boo. But I promise there are more creators out there who don't want it than those who do. Especially first time writers who are still trying to find their style. It's demoralizing. Which leads into the next point:
"You need a thicker skin"
I personally am made of stone. I actively participated in the Tumblr Superwholock saga. I've been to k**l myself for daring to enjoy something someone else doesn't. There's (almost) nothing you can say that would actively piss me off or offend me.
However. Being made of stone doesn't mean I can't recognize and acknowledge when someone is being rude. And you know what? It's valid for people to be upset when they work hard on something only to hear: "Well, here are eight things you could have done better."
I've been told before that I've "missed opportunities" in my stories. To me, that's vaguely annoying at best. I wrote the story I wanted to write. There's no such thing as "missed opportunities" - that's an idea you can take and write it.
But a new writer hearing something like that? It could be absolutely devastating. Here are they are trying to share something the world, only to be told they could have done it better. That can absolutely kill creativity. Which leads into the next point...
you're driving readers away
And you're driving writers away. I know people who just straight up abandoned their stories because of unsolicited criticism. They don't want it, they didn't need it, and they shouldn't have to say "Hey maybe don't crap all over this thing I've spent days or weeks working on."
Imagine if you spent all day cooking a big family meal, and when everyone tried it all they said was, "Well the chicken was dry, the potatoes weren't mashed enough, the green beans were kind of limp and soggy." Did you ask for that criticism by presenting your meal to an open forum (the family table)? Should you have said, "Hey maybe be nice and don't insult every little thing you see wrong with this"? You're not a professional chef, you already know that, and so does your family. Are you going to cook for them again knowing that's their attitude toward you? Personally, I wouldn't. They can make their own damn meals if they're so good at it. I'll just keep cooking for me.
And finally...
"Your viewpoint is toxic."
No, it's setting boundaries. It's saying, "I put a lot of energy into this thing I've written (or maybe I wrote it in five minutes, who knows), and I kind of just want people to be nice to me because validation is cool." And validation is cool! Everybody needs it. Everybody thrives on it. There's nothing wrong with that. Imagine going through your entire life without anyone ever saying one good thing about you, just pointing out all the things you did wrong. Your chicken is too dry, your parallel parking is a bit crooked, your line art is shaky, you missed a spot when you were cleaning the kitchen counter, you missed an opportunity while writing your story. That's exhausting. Nobody wants to live like that. Maybe instead of assuming criticism is the default response, you should look at the person and go "I don't know their life, maybe they just need some kindness."
And if you really don't like something someone's written? Go write it yourself. Fanfiction is a free market, there's absolutely nothing stopping you from writing and sharing your own stories. You're not helping anything by offering criticism to someone who doesn't want it and could potentially be put off by it.

Weekly tag wednesday!
Thank you Sky @skylerwinchester for the tag!
which character from any media would you like to have as a father?
Aziraphale and Crowley from Good Omens. I can't pick one because even though they are currently divorced, we all know they are actually married. Can't have one and not the other.
if money, laws, time, and effort were no object, what animal would you want to have?
A herd of elephants. They think we are cute, I think they are cute. It would be a good time for everyone involved.
what is your Chinese takeout order?
Pork or tofu fried rice, chicken chow mein, and sesame chicken.
what's your favourite emoji? šŸ„¹
would you rather have a library, greenhouse, or home theater in your house?
Home theater. I consume so many movies and TV shows. I'd be in there every day.
what childhood tv show do you think of the most fondly?
Foster's home for imaginary friends
what was your tumblr like when you first joined?
The first time around, it was exclusively Superwholock. šŸ’€ Then I left for a few years, and when I came back, I started the one you see now, which hasn't changed.
what clothing style do you love but don't feel compelled to replicate yourself?
Hyper fem and hyper masc looks
if you were plopped into a fictional world, which one would you know the layout of the best?
Tbth, hogwarts would be number one. Fuck jkr, trans live matter. But my mom read me the HP books growing up. My love for fiction and writing came from this series. Second would be Hawkins from Stranger Things. Fuck Noah Schnapp. Free Palestine. But stranger things is what really brought me back to the fandom space and writing fan works. So. It's complicated I guess? Lol.
what is your favourite piece of art?
FUNGUS by Narcissistic Cookbook.
do you have a water bottle? what does it look like?
It's one of those tumblers that Starbucks has made really popular. It's iridescent blue and purple. Very me. Because if you couldn't tell, I have an obsession with purple.
what fanfic trope is a quiet fave?
Found family and "unusual" relationships, specifically QPRs and polycules. I love when authors understand that we are pack animals and push the boundaries of queerness. TLDR; Let the homies kiss.
do you carry a daily bag? what does it look like? what's the weirdest thing in it?
Nope, I'm a Pocket Person. The weirdest thing I carry is probably my knife? Or my lighter, but I feel like even that is pretty normal.
if you had to ship Mickey with another Gallagher, who would it be?
Had to? Probably Carl. I think 1. Carl is most likely of the brothers to be queer and 2. He'd vibe the best with Mickey imo. Early 30s Mickey and early 20s Carl keeping each other out of and getting each other into trouble.
what is a fanfic trope you didn't expect to like and then very much did?
No judgement, right? Lol. Mpreg in ABO fics. ONLY ABO fics, but there you go.
Do you think s11 Mickey can still carry s11 Ian?
Absolutely. I think he does it every once in a while just to prove it, to. Ian always humors him.
who got custody of the killing bat when they sold the house?
Sky had it right, Carl definitely got it.
I'm sorta on time, so I'll tag a few people. @spacerockwriting @energievie @jrooc @krystallouwho @callivich @juliakayyy @sweetbee78 @ian-galagher
And anyone else. If you see this and want to do it, tag! You're it! If not, here's some cake. šŸ°
