thinking about how two of the most significant nights for jason post resurrection were spent in the rain thinking of bruce (who was never going to come save him).

jason crawling out of his grave and being found by two people, repeating just one word over and over again; Bruce.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
disguised as clayface disguised as himself, jason fights bruce in hopes to see him filled with regret and mourning. when it is clear to him that bruce has moved on, jason screams in the rain, the caption; The father had lost a son, and now the son had lost the father.

Prompt 138
Danny squints up at the blurry form cradling him, brain trying to catch up with his situation. He can feel the pulse of his siblings’ cores nearby, gently pulsing contentedly despite the chaos of his last memories. His limbs feel too small and pudgy, too-small fingers gripping onto something as his vision started to clear.
There was a man, holding him? Cradling his too-small form like he was an infant- was he an infant? He was pretty sure he wasn’t supposed to be, he had been older but now he wasn’t. He squinted up at the stranger, green eyes meeting green. Huh. They kind of looked like he could be their dad or something.

I think that because a lot of people don't read the original '80s comics this ends up getting lost in comic retcons, but a very important characteristic of Robin!Jason, that has been changed to better fit the narrative that he's a villain, is that Jason had unwavering and complete trust in Bruce and in the Batman mythos.
In the original comics he constantly looks to Bruce for guidance, orders, or generally Bruce's opinions. Jason does not, when he is Robin, at any point doubt Bruce's ability to save people or Bruce's kindness, and that is what makes under the Red Hood so tragic, because Jason never once even considered the possibility that Bruce didn't love him or wouldn't be there for him, and then Bruce proved him wrong. The reason why Jason was so heartbroken at the thought of there being a new Robin and at Joker still being alive is that there wasn't a single sliver of doubt in his heart when he died that Bruce was going to avenge him.
Ps: I know Bruce loves Jason very much. Jason, in UTRH, does not know that.

i haven't mentioned this before but one tommy kinard family lore idea i'm really attached to is his mother passing away during childbirth, while giving birth to him. just something something about him and buck both growing up haunted by this feeling of a life lost in exchange for theirs where tommy is aware of it his entire life, where his father slaps him in the face with the fact every chance he gets, in contrast to buck's ignorance and the sense of hollowness he feels in the pit of his stomach. something something about the buckley parents' grief translating to neglect and blindness when it comes to buck vs the kinard patriarch's grief becoming words that cut a bit too close to tommy's skin and pressure and unrealistic expectations that make him feel like he's gonna choke. something something about buck feeling unsettled all his life, lost about who is because of daniel's passing and maddie's abandonment and his parents' neglect of it all vs tommy knowing exactly who - what - he is but not being able to look it in the eye because it would be the one thing to make him even more worthless in his father's eyes than his existence costing them his mother's life.

The Batman fandom infantilizing a near 30 years old white man taking in a child, saying he was a brother more than a father as if he wasn't a full grown adult taking in a child he could have birthed, but parentifying a brown young adult taking in his brother pre-teen for less than a year, saying he was a father more than a brother (only a year is barely enough but ok), or saying he was more a father to his other brothers than Bruce, when he met them when he was 18 and 21 is making me uncomfortable, ngl.
Like, Bruce is a "kid" when he became Dick's guardian when he canonically was over 25 (he started being Batman at 25), and a brother to him when he raised him for 10 years (and Dick probably has not many memories from before Bruce now), but Dick is a "father" to Damian he only had as his charge for less than a year, half of which they were fighting each others??? Make it make sense???

My thoughts about Jason are just like I think they try to cash in on the dead kid thing a lot without providing much substance for it (1 reason I think utrh as a movie pulled it off is because it does give us not only a happy Jason but a smiling and happy Bruce) because in many (not all) comics flashbacks robin Jason is being a bit bitchy or difficult and it’s almost never about Bruce liking him as a person. So that combined with the adoption being a retcon dick brings in through confrontation adds up to this impression that Jason is like. A lump. An uncomfortable obligation and a regret.
And there *is* imo a lot of father son stuff to mine in Jason and Bruce’s relationship but a lot of it is pre crisis and is Dc ever gonna make that one hug canon again? No. And then all of this on top of how Jason robin personality wise was a lot like dick AND there’s how Bruce adopted Jason because he had no parents and needed a father and what Bruce wanted was a chance to do it over with dick with the foresight of how much they would mean to each other. So when you don’t account for pre-crisis there’s the impression that Bruce made a promise to be his father before they even really knew each other- and that is a big regret. And Jason as his son is an obligation. Based off of how he felt about Dick. And then I go insane.
