Today was good! I’m a little overwhelmed!
3:30 am posting because I’m feeling slightly wound thanks to today being a whole day, but it wasn’t a bad day?
Short version: bunch of appointments, thankfully all online, but after last week being stress central this was tolerable. I got my MMJ eval and it was quick and easy and if anything I over prepared because I’m so used to not being believed and having to back myself up with data. (Which I have to gather and keep for myself because medicine is apparently just a free for all where no one communicates with each other through the online app they have specifically so they can all access data about me from each other! Neat!)
Anyway that was a major relief and I was ready to cry because they said that this should work really well with the conditions and symptoms I have. I’ll probably write something up on the process later (because I would’ve liked a plain English walkthrough of what to expect but that’s ok) but I got my card from the state, which is all digital now, so welcome to the future, I guess.
We headed out to a pretty well reviewed and priced medical dispensary in the area and had a long info session on what would work best for me and landed on some low dose (for now) capsules and gummies. Then we got fried chicken because I’d had enough for one day and went home to see if it would work.
I took a capsule, ate my chicken, and waited. They did advise taking it with a fatty food (could’ve been peanut butter or avocado or anything really; we just got chicken for its uh, health…improving….properties….yeah that sounds right) It took like a solid hour and change to notice anything, and the effects were pretty minor.
I kept trying to explain what was happening to Delade but it was a very subtle thing and hard to get across. Basically the calmest I’ve felt in ages (bonus) and like a slight tiredness, like when you’re tired at the end of the day but not exhausted or like drugged tired if you take something to get to sleep and it hits hard. Just a nice soft calm feeling.
I got brave and tried adding in an extra half a gummy (watermelon flavor!) and that hit much more quickly and mostly just added to the soft feeling. Trying to put it in better words, it was like the different between laying directly on the hard floor, or laying on a puffy blanket on the floor. You can still feel the floor, but it’s much more comfortable than otherwise. I didn’t really feel particularly loopy other than finding a few things funnier than they probably actually were. I think I would compare it in drowsiness more to like…if you’ve been given an opioid after surgery or dental work or something, it’s kind of more like that than feeling just knocked right out. I always felt like these kinds of things gave me a sort of “cozy,” safe feeling while still being conscious enough to do some light things, and this was similar. Everybody’s different though so I might be a weirdo.
So yeah, it does work! I wasn’t expecting like a 100% change in pain levels, and this will definitely take some fine tuning to get right, but there was a difference for sure. I had the makings of a nasty headache after being stressed out all afternoon, which didn’t seem affected much by anything I took so that’s interesting. If I hadn’t had the headache I probably would have attempted some comic work but staring directly into a screen felt like a bad idea. In any case the sharp edges of the pain in the rest of my body got filed way down and I’m pretty amazed overall.
I know this can work now! So I can try again tomorrow! Hopefully with less stress headache so I can get a better gauge on how it actually feels! And hopefully try to draw.
So now I just have to figure out how not to feel weird about this talking to various doctors. Some recommended it, some I can imagine being less positive, but I think the anxiety about being judged is mostly in my head.
Anyway! It was a good experience overall, both the process for getting the card and actually trying the drug itself. If it’s something you’ve been looking into and have questions I can try and answer based on my (admittedly brief) experience so far. I only know how things work in NY, but being pretty anxious I get how it can feel more enormous to figure out when you don’t know the whole scope of a thing or what it’s like to actually do.
This entire thing makes me cackle btw because in fifth grade I won some DARE essay contest in school and I think got some kind of gift card I spent on art supplies, and a hat with the DARE lion mascot thing on it, which I think I still have and should probably start wearing for maximum dumbassery.

What happens when... I develop a new food allergy?
Whether this is your first food allergy, or the most recent in a long list, it can still be a rough adjustment and overwhelming amount of change.  But as someone who has gone through this more than twenty times, I promise you it’s not the end of the world.
The majority of this post is related to severe, anaphylactic food allergies, but I’m of course always going to advocate for being careful, and some of this will apply to milder allergies too.  This advice also works if you were just diagnosed with celiac disease, or another condition that makes you sensitive to cross contamination.  I’m going to let your doctor handle the medical side of this, but I’m hoping this post will cover all the other things you need to know!
I made some pretty thorough lists of things to check, replace, or clean to make sure you’re safe from allergens- I’ll put those at the end of this post.  It is a lot- recruit a non-allergic friend to help if you can!
But before I get into the lists, here are some other things I’ve learned about getting a new food allergy.
-Update your doctors, including your dentist.  And also update any emergency info you have around, like your medical ID in your phone.
-Research other names for your allergen and what it might be found in.  Food labelling can be very sneaky, which is Not Cool, but you get really good at reading ingredient labels once you know what to look for.  I would stay away from googling too many other allergy related things though, it’s an easy way to get into a panic.
-Talk to the people you live with.  Hopefully they’re good about it, but they might take a while to understand, or might even be angry and resistant, which honestly is beyond me.  If this is your situation, I am so so sorry.  You deserve to feel safe in your own home, no matter what.  If you can set some ground rules and get people on board even a little bit, that will help, and hopefully everyone will come around eventually.
-You should also talk to your partner, or anyone you might be kissing (or who might be kissing you, even on the cheek.  Hi grandma.)  Their foods, medications, reusable water bottles, and toothbrush are all possible ways you could get sick.  So even if they haven’t eaten allergens in hours, it could still be on their toothbrush and that can be enough to cause a reaction.  This research article (Maloney JM, et al. Peanut allergen exposure through saliva: assessment and interventions to reduce exposure. J Allergy Clin Immunol 2006; 118: 719-724.) found that waiting at least an hour and having something allergen free to eat was the best way to de-poison-ify for someone you want to kiss.  I’ve also heard from other allergists that 3-4 hours is the right number.  So I would ask your allergist what they recommend for you.
(note:  I would like to keep this blog safe and friendly for spoonies of all ages, but if you are in need of more information about dating and allergies, feel free to message me and I’ll send you some links!)
-One thing that surprised me with some of my food allergies was the cravings.  Sometimes I never want to even hear the word “pineapple” again, but especially if it was something like eggs that are more a hidden ingredient, I struggled with cravings for foods I couldn’t have anymore, like French toast.  And I’m not even someone who likes food that much!  So I’m here to tell you that the cravings are normal, and will subside in a few weeks.  It also helps to just not be around things you can’t eat for a bit.  And to look for replacement recipes for your favorites- there’s so much out there, it’s really impressive.
-The other common (emotional) reaction is anxiety.  Anaphylactic food allergies can be life threatening, of course you’re scared!  It is 100% normal to be worried and afraid and anxious and terrified, especially after an allergic reaction.  That response happens to help keep you safe!  But it’s also exhausting, and can get out of control.  My best advice here is to follow the concrete steps you need to be safe, and then tell yourself that you’ve done everything you can, you know what you’re doing, and even if something goes wrong, you know you are prepared.  You can be prepared and careful AND not have to be scared all the time.  There is zero shame in seeing a therapist about this too, they can really help.  (My advice here is borrowed from my lovely therapist!)
And here are the lists I mentioned earlier!  I hope this helps you feel safer and more prepared.  Severe food allergies are a big change, but you got this!
Things to replace:
-Toothbrush (and maybe toothpaste too)
-Any food that is still safe but might be cross contaminated (like flour, sugar, spices, things that go on toast… basically any open containers)
-Kitchen sponges and rags and anything else that gets used to hand wash dishes
-Chapstick and lipstick
-Stim toys that go in your mouth
-Cast iron kitchen equipment
-Cutting boards
-Reeds (if you play a reed instrument)
-Ice cubes, if you have a tray in your freezer that people reach into
Things to clean:
-Kitchen itself, including all appliances and countertops
-Anywhere else food is kept or eaten (such as pantry, dining room, couch, in your purse, desk, locker)
-All cooking supplies (plates, pans, silverware, crockpot, basically everything)
-Potholders and oven mitts
-Pillowcases
-Dish towels
-Doorknobs
-Handles
-Light switches
-Remotes
-Cloth napkins
-Reusable water bottles
-Kitchen drawers that might have gotten crumbs or residue in them
-Retainer or mouthguard
-Lunchbox
-Toys and fidgets
-Purse/backpack
-Writing utensils
-Car steering wheel, controls, and handles (especially if you’re the driver)
-Inhaler, spacer, nebulizer, CPAP mask, and other related equipment
-Oral thermometer
-Face masks
-Phone, computer keyboards, touch screens
-Hand or wrist braces
-Video game controllers
-Any musical instruments you play, but especially if it’s a wind instrument.  Plus the case, and any cleaning equipment.
-Whatever your toothbrush is stored in
Things to check the labels on:
-All your food (what you have at home, and anything new you buy)
-Toothpaste
-Floss
-Shampoo and other hair products
-Hand soap and dish soap
-Deodorant
-Makeup and chapstick
-Medications
-Lotions
-Sunblock
-Pet food (if their food turns out to contain your new allergen, you might want to clean or replace their toys as well.  And a bath for the pet themselves!)
If I missed anything on my lists, please feel free to add on in the replies!  If you need someone to talk to or have questions, you’re welcome to message me.  And I promise this gets easier 💙

The Accident
When making the best of a bad situation, a witch arrives to give an unexpected option, requiring a bit of self-reflection before the protagonist can make a decision. Trans vibes.
CW: major injury, body transformation, medical coercion, gender dysphoria, depersonalization, deadname mention, anxiety, derealization, eye contact, medical situations, consensual dehumanization, misgendering
The truck came out of nowhere. Metal buckled and squealed, glass shattered and sprayed, and plastic strained and tore.
There were no memories after that, for a while. When consciousness finally returned, everything was fuzzy; there was some sort of room with medical equipment and an attendeant.
The attendant realized the patient was awake and went to fetch the doctor.
Strolling in with a digital tablet, the doctor looked over the hospital bed and remarked, "It's great to see you finally awake."
She continued, "If you're feeling up to it, I can catch you up on what's been going on since the accident."
Accident? Oh… something about a truck and broken glass… The patient sat up a bit, or at least attempted to, and stammered, "Y-yeah, uh, go ahead." The room was less fuzzy now, but everything felt like a dream… maybe it was?
The doctor looked the patient up and down somberly before continuing, "Okay, this is a lot, so we'll go slow and I'll come back by again in case you have more questions later. Not to be a medical cliche, but there's good news and bad news. The bad news is, some of your body was damaged in the accident. The good news is, you're alive and in a world where we can replace pretty much any part of the body. It also may be possible to fix everything with surgery and extensive therapy, but the process would be long."
The dream had become even more unreal than it seemed before. Vision seemed to narrow, going dim around the edges. The patient's ears were ringing, and thinking was becoming more cloudy than it was upon first awakening.
The doctor continued explaining, "There's more bad news, though. Your insurance isn't great. So if you want to opt for replacement, it's probably only going to cover basic replacement parts, but we do have a patient advocate team that can help you try to secure a zero-interest medical loan that may enable you to have better replacement parts to give you a more normal body."
A growing sense of shock and horror crept across the patient's mind. Looking down revealed abdominal damage and tubes leading to a number of machines. The lower limbs also showed signs of major injury and had hardware mounted around them. No wonder the earlier attempt to sit up in bed failed.
The doctor tapped a few buttons on her tablet then looked up again and spoke, "My name is Dr. Corsi, but you can call me Jasmine. I'm going to have the patient advocate come by and help you figure out how to make the best of an unfortunate situation. Please don't hesitate to have someone fetch me if you have medical questions about any of your options."
Jasmine left and was soon replaced by a smiling, eager fellow with some brochures who introduced himself as Mike, with a last name that sounded like Attenboro or Aldanburo. Thoroughly overwhelmed, the patient muttered, "Could you just leave the info about my options, my head is hurting terribly and I can't focus." Mike departed, and the patient fell asleep.
* * *
"Hey, how are you feeling today?" chirped Mike, now on his fifth visit. "Have you made a decision?"
With an eyeroll, the patient answered, "Look, I just don't want to be in more debt. I know I won't have much functionality with the basic parts, but I'm not sure I'm going to be able to go back to work regardless of what option I take. So how would I ever pay off that nightmare of a loan? And I am just not interested in placing all my hope in natural healing fixing everything slowly,"
Casting his eyes down, Mike spoke more softly, "Yeah, I mean, I am trying to give you the best option here that gets you back to normal quickly, but if it's unaffordable then it would be unethical to saddle you with the debt. But… I think I know someone who can help, it's just… it's a little unconventional. And there may be some other things you'd have to be ready to sacrifice, but it wouldn't be your finances."
The patient's eyes grew wide.
Mike looked nervous, "Look, let me make a phone call. And let me look into something else more official, too. Because I really think the cybernetically controlled legs and fully synthetic organs are your best bet."
Mike left the room for a few minutes before returning with a phone. He offered it to the patient, saying, "I have someone you may want to speak to."
The strange voice on the other end of the line was strong and charming as it greeted the patient, "Hello sweetheart! The one who has been speaking to you about your options thought you might want an introduction with its owner. Rather unconventional choice for it to make, but part of the agreement is that it has full autonomy at its job. So, tell me, little one, what is your name?"
The patient began, "Hi, my name is Josep---" but was interrupted at the beginning of the 'f' sound.
Amused, the strong voice on the phone jumped in, "Hold it. Is that your real name, or the one on your birth certificate?"
The patient felt clammy and a little nauseated, unable to respond.
The voice on the phone continued, "Let's try that again. What name would you like to be called?"
The patient paused for a minute and managed to say, "Call me Jo---uh, Joanna."
The voice on the other end of the line sounded pleased, responding, "Ah, I thought so. Joanna it is, then. Joanna, if you want to be out of that hospital quickly and can't afford the cybernetically-enhanced and fully-synthetic parts, I may have an option for you. But I'm not going to discuss it over the phone. Would you like to meet me? I'll come to you. And only say yes if you're interested. If you're not, tell me no, and I will take you at your word and leave you alone."
Joanna was puzzled. She didn't have a lot of experience with people taking her word seriously, and hardly ever had anyone really wanted to know what she wanted to be called, always assuming her legal name and gender were the right ones to use.
In fact, Joanna was more than puzzled; she was overwhelmed to the point where the room started spinning. She took a deep breath and replied, "Yes, but maybe tomorrow," before handing the phone back to Mike. Joanna blurted out, "Mike, I need some privacy for now," before closing her eyes and trying to calm down.
* * *
Mike showed up the next day with a tall, mystically dressed figure, who immediately seemed to recognize Joanna.
The figure spoke in that charming voice again, "Joanna, my name is Isabel and my pronouns are they/them. For now, that's how you'll refer to me."
Isabel leaned in and asked, "How are you doing today, little one?", looking at Joanna square in the eyes, causing Joanna to squirm and look down.
Isabel stood back up straight and frowned a little, remarking, "I see I've made you uncomfortable. Let me say this: I don't expect you to make or maintain eye contact if you don't want to. I have many ways in which I can communicate; it may take some time to find the right ones to use with you."
This confused Joanna twice over. She was used to people not only expecting her to return eye contact constantly but also for people being unwilling to accomodate what she thought of as her quirks. She was also very surprised to see anybody notice that it was the intense eye contact that bothered her; most people ascribed the wrong reasons to her reactions.
Joanna replied, "Mostly, I think I want to get out of here. It's nice to meet you in person, though I'm not sure what it is you can do for me or why we had to meet in person." Joanna was not a fan of in-person conversations, as the other party would often expect her to interpret their body language.
Isabel smiled at Joanna. "Little one, because I want to show you something that I can't show you over the phone. I don't do things without a reason."
Joanna had become more annoyed and raised her voice, "Oh yeah? Well why do you keep calling me little one?"
Isabel maintainer their calm demeanor. "I have a knack for guessing what people want, but it's only a guess. If I'm wrong, don't hesitate to let me know. If you would like me to stop calling you little one, then say so --- or write it on a note if it's hard to say it out loud."
Joanna shifted from being annoyed to being tense and nervous. "Actually… it's okay. I can't understand why, but it's comforting to hear."
Isabel smiled again. "I'm grateful to hear that. My intuition was correct again, but please inform me if it becomes clear that my intuition is wrong in the future. It's not always right. Can you do that?"
Joanna was wondering what the point of all this was, but answered, "Okay, I guess I can. So what was it that you needed to show me in person?"
Isabel's eyes sparkled a bit as they simply said, "This," and waved their fingers at Mike. The air swirled around Mike for a moment then cleared.
At first, Joanna saw nothing unusual. Then she noticed one of Mike's elbows was not a normal human elbow; it looked more like ball and socket joints crafted from a composite, and his forearm was covered in runes. The upper half of Mike's face also seemed to now covered in runes, with parts of his eyes, nose, and forehead carved with whorled lines.
Mike spoke up, "There were a few injuries, to one arm and parts of the face, and there just weren't good, affordable options at the time. Isabel helped… and fixed some problems with a deviated septum, as well," gesturing at his nose, which had seemed to become shifted to one side.
Isabel clarified, "I can make small changes, or build off of existing medical work. My magic can't work any wild miracles, but it can help. What you're seeing now is how it appears without my enchantments, more or less."
Joanna's mind was racing. Not only could this offer a solution for her current quandary, but… Joanna started speaking, "Isabel? What other kind of small changes can you make? Because I… have had some things I've wanted changed for a while, just little things that…" before trailing off. Her mind started spinning and she felt her cheeks redden.
Isabel eyed her curiously. "What things do you want changed? My intuition is giving me an idea, but I am going to need you to be specific."
Joanna gulped. Her mouth and throat had gone completely dry. "I have… I've wanted to find a gender clinic, and… I mean I've looked into… I don't know how to find a doctor that can help with…" She couldn't seem to bring herself to complete her thoughts aloud.
Isabel said, "That's enough to clarify. If you are wanting to feminize your body shape or change what's in your pants, that falls under the realm of what I can do. In fact, I didn't always look how I look now, so I know quite a bit about this. Why do you think I got into the study of magic?"
Smirking, Isabel continued, "What I ask from those who seek my help is, effectively, to do my bidding. I am not going to ask for anything impossible, and I won't overly burden anyone. But it brings me great pleasure for others to carry out the tasks I give them."
They wiggled their fingers at Mike again, commenting, "I don't want to keep it standing around with eyesight missing in one eye or with reduced range of elbow motion for no good reason; I have little interest in cruelty. But I wanted to show you how it looked both with and without my enchantments so you'd understand." After another shimmer in the air around Mike, he had returned to his normal form. Wait… normal? Joanna wondered which one was actually his normal form, or whether she needed to stop thinking about what was normal and find a different way to think about all this.
Joanna, head swimming, managed to say, "Okay… so, I---I am not even sure what to say right now. I guess what I want to know is, what are these tasks? What is your bidding? Why do you keep calling him an it? That seems… dehumanizing, doesn't it?"
Isabel smiled sweetly. "Little one, most of these tasks are fairly mundane; helping me around the house, helping me with my magic. Some of these tasks do get a little spicier; a witch like me draws upon the intense power of erotic energy for some of my magic, as well as other important powers of friendship and love. In fact, I'm only interested in doing this kind of magic on those who are fully willing. As for your other question, I will let it answer on its own."
Mike spoke up, "This one is not really human. It is a combination of human flesh and medical technology and magic. It has moved beyond humanness."
Joanna, thoroughly confused, responded, "Okay sure but why are you talking so funny? It's like you stopped saying 'I' as soon as Isabel showed up."
Mike responded, "This one has embraced its new sense of self and its new role in service to its witch, as well as in service to others through patient advocacy work. It has decided to exist as a helpful animated doll, though not quite like the clockwork kind that needs winding. It chooses to function as one of the larger collective of dolls that serve this witch. Hence, it is 'this one' when it references itself, at least outside of work or in front of its witch."
This was just too much for Joanna, who had often not been treated as an equal by her peers, for having unusual interests and struggling to fit in socially. "I need you both to leave. Now. And I'm surprised nobody from my medical team has come in this room this whole time that we've been talking!"
Isabel placed a folded card on the table next to the hospital bed. "Joanna, I am happy to leave. I have written my number on this card, but it sounds like maybe you'd be better off exploring medical-only options for your injuries as well as seeking out a gender clinic. I do hope you find peace… little one." And with that, they stepped out of the room, leaving only Mike.
"Before I go," started Mike, "I did have an update on your financial situation. I was able to secure one of the limited number of medical grants available. They're normally reserved for people with no insurance, but I asked if they could make an exception. So if you want the cybernetic and fully-synthetic option, you won't end up in terrible debt."
Joanna was left alone as Mike walked out of the room as well. Her mind was racing, and she kept leaping wildly from thinking of being humiliated for much of her life for being different, to being controlled and manipulated by past abusers, to her current situation, to the display of magic she had seen Isabel demonstrate with Mike. It was far too much for her to take in. She was intimidated by what Isabel seemed capable of, but fascinated by an image that kept appearing in her mind: a doll-like figure that resembled her but with more curves, scampering around doing chores and flashing flirtatious smiles.
As her mind jumped back to replaying scenes of past hurt, she closed her eyes. Her exhausted brain started drifting away from reality, and luckily into sleep.
* * *
Joanna woke with a start. She had woken from a strange dream where she her body had been transformed into a body that she'd been much happier with than the one she'd had all her life, the one which was now in a hospital bed and in need of repair.
In the dream, she had felt free.
In the dream, she had felt like she was finally herself.
In the dream, she was beautiful and strong.
And in the dream, she was carrying out assorted household labor for a tall figure who didn't force her to make eye contact when she didn't want to, who didn't call her homophobic slurs for being different…
In her mind, she replayed the scene from when Mike and Isabel were in the room. Mike had come by at some point and left information about the grant on the bedside table with a note that read, "There's a list of resources for the other thing you mentioned available, if you want that too," very likely referencing a list of gender clinics.
Her ruminating was interrupted by Dr. Corsi.
"Hello, Jos---" started the doctor, but Joanna jumped in before the name could be completed.
"Hi, Jasmine. Mike brought me some news about a grant."
"Yes," responded the doctor, "he managed to get an exception to our policy for you. So the insurance is not going to be the problem that it seemed to be at first."
Joanna's heart was racing in her chest. She glanced nervously at Isabel's card, also sitting on the bedside table. "Doctor, I think… I think I'd prefer if the hospital kept the grant to be used for uninsured patients. My insurance covers some basic replacement parts. I know they won't be as nice-looking or as functional, but…" She could hardly believe what was saying right now. Something in her heart was telling her that she was doing the right thing, even though it didn't make sense to the logical part of her mind.
"Are you sure?" Jasmine looked at her quizzically. "That's very noble of you, but, if I were you, I'd take the chance to get the best option that I can."
"Doctor, I actually totally understand what you mean about the best option. I know it's a little hard to explain but… I think just the basic stuff is going to suit me just fine."
"Well, I'm glad you made a decision anyway. You're stabilized from the accident and need to move ahead with surgery so we can free up this bed. I'll send our surgical consult tech around to go through all the paperwork with you."
As Dr. Corsi left the room, Jasmine's heart continued its frantic pounding. It suddenly dawned on her what she had just done: she had put herself on a path where she'd only regain full functionality if she enlisted some magical aid or spent a long time doing physical therapy. She didn't think she had the patience for the latter, though.
Or had she really committed to that? She could always tell the surgical consult tech that she had changed her mind again and wanted to take the grant, right?
Two hours later, after the paperwork had been filled out, she had not changed her mind.
She dialed the witch's number.
* * *
"Hello, my name is Isabel, I'm here to pick up a patient, number 57-12576."
The receptionist replied, "Ah, yes, he's coming out of the recovery room right now. Go back through the double doors and he'll be in room five."
Isabel winced. To them, hearing Joanna misgendered was like nails on a chalkboard. But, as far as Isabel knew, Joanna had not informed the hospital of her real pronouns, and Isabel was not about to out her without her permission.
Isabel made their way into the patient room on the surgery wing. "Isa… Isabel…" muttered a very sleepy Joanna.
"Ah, little one, it is so wonderful to hear your voice!" Isabel beamed.
"Can you… are you going to help… Can you help me make these ugly robot legs dance? I've always wanted to dance… Oh, and my stomach… I don't want to have the dietary, um, restrictions of these bottom-of-the-line organs… And I want to look in the mirror and see my real self, and…" Joanna trailed off as her eyes filled with tears.
"Sweetheart. One thing at a time. First, no part of you is ugly. But we can make you curvier and adjust your appearance with magic, which may help you find your own beauty that has been hidden from you. I promise that I can make you dance. In fact, I love it when my dolls ask me to dance! I can enchant your belly, and we will feast together on all sorts of meals that I will teach you how to prepare. You won't have to worry about dietary restrictions, and I will keep your favorite foods on stock so that you can treat yourself when you want to."
Joanna's confusion was a mixture of surprise and anesthesia that was still wearing off. "Wouldn't the treats be just… just as rewards?"
"Oh, no, little one. I don't mete out food based on your behavior---unless, of course," they chuckled, "that kind of thing is fun and consensual for you. No, I've found that giving dolls plenty of access to delicious treats helps them learn better self-care. My intuition is telling me that you might appreciate some lessons in self-care…"
Joanna's eyes continued to leak their salty fluid. "I am not always so good with taking care of myself. Are you a harsh teacher? I am anxious…"
Isabel took Joanna's hand into their own. "Little one, I am a very direct and efficient teacher, but I try not to be harsh. I suspect you've already been harsh enough on yourself in this life. No, I am here to help you flourish as yourself, in exchange for your help around the house and… maybe sometimes in the bedroom."
Joanna's eyes dried, but her cheeks turned bright red. She had no idea what to say. She shied away from most discussions of sexuality due to being painfully manipulated in the past. She could only relate to this kind of subject in the context of her old life, which was a life she did not want to return to or think about right now.
Isabel squeezed her hand gently. "Nothing before you're ready for it, though. We can wait to talk about that. Maybe after your curves start coming in? I've been preparing the runes for that spell since our first conversation. In the meantime, there will be plenty of other tasks of mine that you'll be tending to… as soon as they let me take you home, that is," said Isabel, a sparkle appearing in her eye as she mentioned taking Joanna home.
Smiling, Joanna looked into their eyes for as long as she could before the eye contact started hurting, then looked down at her hand in theirs.
Joanna's voice was warm and eager with possibility as she said, "This one can't wait."

Note
Hey there! I’ve seen you mention in your tags on several posts that you’re dealing with endo and I wanted to say I’m sorry I know how difficult that is not only to live with but to get anybody to take seriously (both in your personal life and in medical settings)
I’m not sure what stage of trying to get decent treatment you’re in atm, but I’d like to suggest trying a Facebook group called Nancy’s Nook (I had to make a Facebook to try it cause I’m never on there but it was really worth it) there is tons of info on there and all of it has sources, links to articles and papers a lot of which are written by the foremost doctors in endo treatment. It just really helped me a lot, and obviously everyone’s situation is different but information is power so I just wanted to let you know incase that might be helpful for you too
There’s so much misinformation about endo, even in the medical community, I had two surgeries that made my pain worse because my dr at the time was using ablation techniques instead of excision (burning instead of cutting out endo, the burning doesn’t get all of it and in my case it left a LOT of inflammation without removing the problem). Nancy’s Nook helped me learn how to tell if a dr knows what they’re talking about, there are lists of drs that have good reviews and practice excision and prescribe meds in a helpful way, etc. Again, idk if you need more info or if you have a dr you’re happy with! But I just wanted to spread the info incase it helped because I know it can be overwhelming❤️
Also if you ever need to talk or just vent or whatever I’m here, endo sucks and I hope your pain eases soon!
i’ve been real low on spoons lately, sorry for not replying right away (to this and a host of other asks), but. yeah i don’t really have the words to say how grateful i am for this? like 70% of my frustration and anger and depression around my own endo is born of the fact that my experience isn’t an outlier, that the majority of people with endometriosis (and god knows how many other problems associated with the uterine reproductive system) are treated like shit by the medical community, that no one knows anything because people don’t care to research it. That there’s been ten times as much research done on erectile dysfunction as there’s been on endometriosis.
So - it’s frustrating that i’m not alone, because I’m scared and angry on behalf of all the people who don’t have access to the kind of resources i’ve been using (research skills, medical insurance, dog-with-a-bone determination and deliberately honed language skills to make people listen). And to have - to have a stranger reach out and give me support, information, advice and places to go to find more of the same -
it means a lot to me. not just because it’s super helpful info for me personally (which, good god, it is; looking into the difference between cautery and excision is something that would never have occurred to me) but because it - it means we aren’t alone.
it’s easy to think that just because the official structures are built to exclude us, we don’t have anywhere to turn to. it’s easy to feel really devastatingly hopeless when you’re faced with this kind of institutional gaslighting and neglect and apathy.
it’s easy to forget that we can and have and do build our own structures. that there are places to turn. that people... that people care. that, because there are so many people like me, there are spaces for people like me. that someone will help.
thank you. i guess that’s all i’m really trying to say. thank you.

Just The Numbers
Total cases: 191,127 (+15,123)
Total deaths: 7,807 (+786)
Mortality rate: 4.08%
WHO numbers look a little wonky today because the timing changed on when things are reported/collected. They should be back to normal tomorrow!

Europe: 74,760 cases (+10,911), 3,352 deaths (+604)
SE Asia: 538 cases (+30), 9 deaths (+1)
Eastern Mediterranean: 18,060 cases (+1552), 1,010deaths (+140)
Americans: 4,979 cases (+2,243), 68 deaths (+18)
Africa: 233 cases (+42), 4 deaths (+0)

Montenegro (2)

International/General News
Eurovision is canceled. Lovers of sparkles and cheesy ballads weep in the streets.
I’m blasting ABBA in mourning and encourage you to join me
Many places are closing liquor stores, bars, and restaurants. This is very concerning for people who are dependent on alcohol as they are at high risk for withdrawal. Public health measures to mitigate this are necessary
The US-Canada border is now closed. Holy shit. Essential business is still allowed but still. Holy shit.
Cuba is working with China to test interferon-alpha as a potential therapy for the virus. Watch this space for further news.
I’m less optimistic about this one than the favipiravir I mentioned yesterday because interferons are a way less directed therapy but the trials will tell the story!
Vaccine trials continue in Seattle, United States. Authorities of the state of Washington are asking for healthy volunteers to join the trial.
Antibody trials are underway in the Netherlands.
The United States has a major shortage of testing supplies, still.
US immigration enforcement are a bunch of bastards. Still.
Italy has promoted a bunch of senior medical students to start practicing in the outpatient setting so more seasoned doctors can work in the hospitals.
As a senior medical student, this frightens me personally.
Virology Corner
Today’s question is: Why 6 feet of separation? How does that help? How is COVID-19 spread?
Let’s start with how COVID-19 is spread. It’s a respiratory virus, so it is spread by respiratory droplets, aka the garbage you breathe/cough/sneeze out.
A good hard sneeze won’t launch your eyeballs out, but it will launch nasty shit up to 6 feet away from you at a shocking speed. (This is why you should Dracula when you sneeze.)
6 feet is a great rule of thumb to keep people out of each other’s sneeze radius, so they can’t get in contact with each other’s respiratory droplets.
Regional News (if you want somewhere added just let me know. Don’t be shy!! I highly recommend you just skip to your area if you don’t wanna be overwhelmed.)

France: last updated 3/17 at 3 pm

French regions have more hyphens than my last name
I’ve left these names in their French language forms, if it would be helpful to translate (e.g. Bretagne to Brittany, Corse to Corsica) I can do that, just let me know.
Affected overseas territories include: Guadeloupe (27), Saint-Barthélémy (3), Saint-Martin (3), Guyane (11), Martinique (19), Mayotte (3), La Réunion (12)
I’ve split out France vs overseas territories for both readability and geographic sense. More granular data will happen over the next few days as I get a handle on the situation there.
Don’t get me started on neocolonialism. We’d be here all day and then there wouldn’t be a newsletter.

Sorry Mom, I’m sad about Eurovision being canceled. You can find a different song you don’t hate.
Sing the first verse and chorus to follow CDC handwashing guidelines! Use soap and water with bad 70s-esque dancing for maximum efficacy and embarrassment of anyone stuck at home/work with you.

About this newsletter I’m Emily, I’m a 4th year med student w/ a degree in molecular biology. I started this because I’m an infectious disease and epidemiology nerd and also all my friends have questions & anxiety. Hi internet! The archive/proper website is located at coronaextranewsletter.wordpress.com. All this info is sourced from regional & national public health organizations, plus the WHO. It’s as up to date as humanly possible. I’ve been beaming information about this outbreak directly into my brain 24/7 but I still miss stuff. Please let me know if I miss something! Most public health departments stop updating their information around 4-5 PM local time on weekdays. That means that the earliest this will come out is around 6 PM Pacific time on weekdays going forward. On weekends things update more sporadically and earlier, so who knows what I’ll do then, but I’ll do my best. The excellent title is courtesy of @marywhal and the Wordpress site is courtesy of @molly0xFFF and @goblintinkerer, thank you all!

Sunday, March 15 COVID-19 updates: TL;DR this is worse than we thought, people without symptoms can be carriers and infect others, and millions of people’s lives are at risk, but that also means that every act of hygiene + social isolation is both more important and more powerful in flattening the curve and saving lives.
Each source dated; because this situation is changing so quickly, I tried to use sources only from the last few days. (Somewhat, but not entirely, U.S.-centric as I live + am tapped into organizing networks here.)
Tumblr media
[id: CNN article headline, March 14: Infected people without symptoms might be driving the spread of coronavirus more than we realized.]
“Several experts interviewed by CNN said while it's unclear exactly what percentage of the transmission in the outbreak is fueled by people who are obviously sick versus those who have no symptoms or very mild symptoms, it's become clear that transmission by people who are asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic is responsible for more transmission than previously thought.
"We now know that asymptomatic transmission likely [plays] an important role in spreading this virus," said Michael Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota.
Osterholm added that it's "absolutely clear" that asymptomatic infection "surely can fuel a pandemic like this in a way that's going to make it very difficult to control."
+ “Coronavirus is most contagious before and during the first week of symptoms”
In other words, instead of thinking in terms of avoiding getting sick, we need to think in terms of avoiding getting others sick. There’s a real and ever-increasing chance that, without necessarily knowing it, you could be a carrier.
Tumblr media
[id: NPR article headline, March 13: Flattening A Pandemic’s Curve: Why Staying Home Now Can Save Lives. Image is of a chart with Number of Cases on the vertical axis and Time Since First Case on the horizontal axis. There’s a straight dotted line labelled Health Care System Capacity running horizontally through the chart. An orange curve labelled Without Protective Measures rises steeply at the beginning of the time axis, showing the number of cases bursting over the Health Care System Capacity line, while a blue curve marked With Protective Measures is spread out over time and and is less steep, staying under the Health Care System Capacity line.]
“As the coronavirus continues to spread in the U.S., more and more businesses are sending employees off to work from home. Public schools are closing, universities are holding classes online, major events are getting canceled, and cultural institutions are shutting their doors. Even Disney World and Disneyland are set to close. The disruption of daily life for many Americans is real and significant — but so are the potential life-saving benefits.
“It's all part of an effort to do what epidemiologists call flattening the curve of the pandemic. The idea is to increase social distancing in order to slow the spread of the virus, so that you don't get a huge spike in the number of people getting sick all at once. If that were to happen, there wouldn't be enough hospital beds or mechanical ventilators for everyone who needs them, and the U.S. hospital system would be overwhelmed. That's already happening in Italy.”
Flattening the curve with hygiene and social distancing isn’t just about the coronavirus. An intensive-care bed is an intensive-care bed, and as people catching a new virus that no one is immune to overwhelm the capacity of the healthcare system, more people are going to die more from all causes--heart attacks, tuberculosis, HIV, the flu, pregnancy complications, injuries from car crashes—because the system won’t have intensive-care capacity for them. Flattening the curve is about keeping coronavirus cases under the dotted line of what the healthcare system--and the rest of our infrastructure--can handle.
Tumblr media
[id: Tweet by Don Moynihan @donmoyn (verified), Mar 15: Real-time evidence of flattening the curve. Lodi had the first Covid-19 case in Italy, and implemented a shutdown on Feb 23. Bergamo waited until March 8. Look at the difference. Incredible research by @drjenndowd, @melindacmills & co-authors. Image is a graph of daily total number of positive cases over time in the two cities, with Bergamo’s rising extremely steeply (approaching 1,000 on March 7 and 2,500 on March 13) and Lodi’s leveling off (approaching 1,000 on March 7 but at barely over 1,000 on March 13). Link in tweet. end id.]
Tumblr media
[id: Tweet by cuddly but deadly! @HikeoftheMenrys, Mar 12: I keep thinking about South Korea’s Patient 31. South Korea was effectively managing the epidemic, and then one person – Patient 31 – infected over 1,000 people over the course of a few days, and caused a national pandemic in that country. Link to article in tweet. end id.]
People are currently using #ShutItDown to encourage U.S. event/bar/restaurant closures, and #StayTheFHome to encourage social distancing.

[id: Tweet by Andy Slavitt @ASlavitt (verified), Mar 15: COVID-19 March 15Prep update: Every day brings vital new developments and I talked to leading epidemiologists, public health experts about what is happening & coming & what we should be doing. I learned a bunch. 1/ end id.]
Full Twitter thread here—lots of good info, including on the phenomenon of people taking preparation less seriously in a few weeks if the virus takes longer to hit our communities, and an endorsement of #StayHome/#StayTheFHome
Tumblr media
[id: Tweet by Amanda Mull @amandamull (verified), Mar 12: i think the impulse for many people is to look at things closing down or events cancelling right now as a sign of doom, but for the most part i think it's cause for optimism—someone in charge of something is taking this seriously, and doing what they can to limit interactions. end id.]
BONUS ROUND: RESOURCES AND STUFF YOU CAN DO TO HELP OTHERS/RESOURCES TO USE IF YOU NEED ‘EM
- Donate to COVID-19 funds, and to the individual fundraisers of people trying to make it through the pandemic.
- Check in with your friends; offer emotional support if you have the capacity to; offer financial help if you have the capacity to. Can you offer to PayPal/Venmo your friends $5, or $20, or the equivalent of their daily or weekly pay so they can take time off? (If it feels awkward, I’ve found a simple acknowledgement “I hope this doesn’t feel awkward, but” can do wonders to allow awkward-feeling conversations to actually happen! I had the capacity to make one of these offers (hint: not the pricey one) to a friend, and he was not remotely offended.)
(And conversely, don’t be hesitant to ask for or accept others’ support! Text/call your friends if you need to talk to someone! In a time of physical isolation, we’ll get through this by staying emotionally connected.)
- Help others find accurate info. Struggling to talk to the older and/or Fox News-watching folks in your life? Buzzfeed has got ya covered.
- There’s organizing by medical schools and other groups to look out for of elderly, isolated and vulnerable people in many communities; check for (or begin) efforts in your own.
- In the U.S. (and UK and other countries, though again I’m only tapped into things here so this part is U.S.-centric, I’m sorry), there is a large population of people who can’t use hygiene or social distancing: people in immigration detention or incarcerated in jails and prisons.
Many people in ICE detention are already sick from medical neglect and hunger strikes, and many people in prisons and jails (which often overlap with ICE detention--there are county jails and other facilities being used as immigration detention centers in every state in the U.S.--are over the age of 60 and are disabled or have serious mental and physical health issues.
Coronavirus inevitable in prison-like US immigration centers, doctors say
Coronavirus: call to release UK immigration centre detainees
Explainer: Prisons And Jails Are Particularly Vulnerable to COVID-19 Outbreaks
Now is a very good time to donate to bail funds, and to look for and support (or begin) national efforts and grassroots efforts in your community to release people from prisons, jails, and immigration detention. “Iran temporarily released 54,000 people from prison in the wake of this global pandemic. The United States must also consider releasing as many people as possible, among other measures, including decreasing the numbers of people being sent into jails and prisons in the first place.” (Slate)
More asks, actions and links to efforts/mutual aid re: incarceration and the pandemic
The Justice Collaborative has a page and the beginnings of a tracker sheet of efforts to help incarcerated people and other vulnerable populations.
Tumblr media
[id: Tweet by Kimberly Corban @Kimberly_Corban (verified), Mar 12: All joking aside, for those who are worried about quarantining during #COVID19 in a home where they do not feel safe, live help is available from the National Domestic Violence Hotline 24/7/365 at @ndvh by chat or by calling their hotline at 1-800-799-7233. end id.]
Tumblr media
[id: Tweet by Joanne Starer @JoanneStarer, Mar 9: If you're not plugged into disability twitter, you may not realize that the hoarding of hand sanitizer, wipes, masks is keeping many immunosuppressed people from getting supplies they need. If you have extras, check in with your community to see if anyone could use them. end id.]
Tumblr media
[id: Tweet by Clint Smith @ClintSmithIII (verified), Mar 9: A reminder that if public schools shut down, millions of children will lose their access to some of the only meals they receive each day. Food banks will become more important, and I've learned the best way to help is not to donate your spare canned goods, it's to donate money. end id.]

What You Need To Know
Sjogren’s is an autoimmune disease that can cause a wide variety of symptoms and result in a wide spectrum of severity. It has an overwhelming fondness for women, affecting eight times as many women as men. The average age of diagnosis for women is the early 50s; the average age for men is the late ‘50s, but Sjogren’s can occur at any age. The portion of the general population who have Sjogren’s syndrome is not known; studies vary widely in their findings, from a fraction of 1% to 7% of the elderly population. Better research on prevalence is needed, as is a standardized set of diagnostic criteria. It’s important to note that elderly folks have Sjogren’s 7-8 times as often as do people in their twenties. Sjogren’s can leave patients bedridden, but many patients are very active with only bothersome dryness of their eyes and/or mouth that doesn’t affect their lives significantly. 84% of Sjogren’s syndrome patients are women. One-third of us (including me) have small fiber nerve damage that causes complications in their autonomic body functions. Some I’ve spoken to have damage to organ valves, some even die of the resultant heart or kidney disease. The folks whom I’ve met who bother to talk to other patients online are often very ill, and have become desperate to learn more about their complicated conditions. Please don’t visit a support group and assume you’re going to be just as bad off as the folks online. We are home and online because we’re too sick to do much else. Many complain that their family doctors are ill-informed or that they aren’t giving them enough information. The recent influx of studies on Sjogren’s syndrome and our related conditions make keeping up with the current literature a must for the doctors who care for us. All About Moisture and the Lack of It People with the disorder experience Sjogren’s in various ways. Some are barely inconvenienced, some lives are altered drastically by the profound fatigue that is a major hallmark of the disease (we’ll be talking a lot about fatigue later on). Some of us are in constant pain due to small and large fiber nerve damage, others suffer sporadically with gland inflammation. Some Sjogren’s patients are merely bothered by dry eyes and take a prescription that keeps that issue in check. They may always be able to manage their illness with little difficulty. These people may live and die with barely a hitch in the course of their lives. Others must use artificial tears regularly throughout the day and suck on hard candies or chew gum to keep their mouths moist. There are prescription pharmaceutical remedies for both these issues when over-the-counter remedies are no longer enough. Women with Sjogren’s can experience vaginal dryness that makes it too painful to have male/female sexual intercourse. Pain during intercourse is often described. A lack of ability to perspire can interfere with body temperature regulation. Some of us produce so little saliva that we are unable to keep our teeth from rotting out of our heads no matter how diligently we brush, rinse and floss. Many middle-aged folks in my Facebook support groups already have dentures or tooth implants. Some of us lose their voices due to lack of mouth moisture to lubricate their throats. Singers with Sjogren’s syndrome often notice a raspiness due to laryngeal tissue damage from drying out. Some singers have to give up singing altogether. A few SS patients even completely lose their ability to speak due to throat tissue damage. Wide Spectrum of Central Nervous System Complications As of this post, some small studies suggest that about 30% of Sjogren’s patients have small-fiber nerve disease as found by skin punch biopsy. There is some speculation that small-fiber damage can progress to large-fiber nerve damage; a small, but significant percentage of patients show damage to myelinated large-fiber nerves. Small-fiber nerve damage is common in SS; this kind of nerve regulates the function of autonomic systems; damage to these nerves leads to a wide variety of dysfunction to body processes that occur without our conscious effort. This condition is called dysautonomia. We don’t have to think about each breath, or each heartbeat for them to keep going, or about pushing our blood or food through our digestive tracts or accessing oxygen or glucose or the uptake of trace minerals. It’s worth noting that recent studies show that up to 62% of fibromyalgia patients actually have small-fiber neuropathy to blame for their muscle pain and spasms. Dysautonomia is a health problem caused by our central nervous system’s inability to properly carry out our autonomic functions, which is everything our bodies do unconsciously, that is, without our consciously directed effort. Some autonomic functions include: 1.  Breathing 2.  Sleeping 3.  Digestion 4.  Heartbeat 5.  Hormone release 6.  Body temperature regulation 7.  Sweating 8.  Balance 9.  Sensory feedback 10. Storing memories - that memory loss is an autonomic function is speculative on my part. Emerging research has us closer than ever to a solid understanding of the memory storage process and the physical existence of engrams, the place where our long-term memories are thought to be. Many Sjogren’s patients report memory and cognitive issues (often called “brain fog” by patients). Many patients report losing jobs because of not being able to keep a train of thought or get enough done in a timely manner. Indeed, this was my chief complaint. I could have kept on with school, I could have withstood the muscle pain, dizziness and fatigue if only I was able to think like I used to. But, no, all of me was tired straight through, especially my brain. Even now, I try to do all intellectually challenging things in the morning when I am sharpest. Many Sjogren’s patients also have dysautonomia. We can’t always depend on a regular heartbeat, the ability to swallow smoothly, to be able to sleep well, to properly digest our food, or even to regulate our body temperature. Heatstroke is always a possibility in hot weather and can come on suddenly after even a short exposure to hot, humid conditions. Dysautonomia is related to small-fiber neuropathy, but it’s not clear exactly how.   Even taking a shower can be challenging if we try to shower in the warm temperatures we used before we got sick. One woman in my Facebook support group reports that her doctor advised that she not even go outside when the temperature (in Fahrenheit) and humidity together add up to 150 or more. I have heard over and over people say that just the effort of taking a shower tires them out so much that they have to go back to bed. I have been there many times! Talking to Your Doctor If you’re really lucky, you have a GP who is familiar with Sjogren’s syndrome. Unfortunately, there is so much new info coming into medicine, our family doctors may not familiar with recent research on the disease and may still think it’s a rare condition or a condition that only affects salivary and lacrimal glands. For this reason, we may need for our rheumatologists to behave as the doctor who coordinates our various medical specialty needs. Please encourage your rheumatologists and family doctors to become more familiar with this condition as it is still under-diagnosed. Ask whether they would appreciate being updated by you; offer to bring in new research papers. You may not be able to bring in the full studies due to paywalls, but you can bring in the abstract; it will give your doctor enough info to look up the full study if s/he has an account with his university library, Medline or Pub Med, etc. Spreading awareness is important: Early detection can lead to disease-modifying treatment. That is, there are drugs that can prevent further damage in Sjogren’s patients who tolerate it. There is research going on right now that may result in a vaccine for us in just a few years. I encourage everyone to join The Sjogren’s Foundation (www.Sjogrens.org) to receive ongoing updates on the state of our condition. Patients are best-served when they are being looked after by a good rheumatologist. A good rheumy will know that your Sjogren’s can cause widespread pain from nerve damage as well as deep fatigue. Check the rheumatology staff of your local teaching hospital if you’re having a hard time finding a knowledgable doctor. I’ve found good specialists by seeing who, locally, was publishing research on my condition. I realize that not everyone lives near teaching hospitals, but it can be worth the trek to the nearest big city if you’re only seeing your rheumatologist every 6 months or so, as most of us do once all the diagnostic interaction between you and your doctor’s office is done. Unless a physician has a particular interest in Sjogren’s syndrome, they may not even be aware that it is as widespread as it is now known to be. Recently thought to be a rare disease, Sjogren’s is now thought to occur in 3-5% of the population. That makes it one of the most common autoimmune diseases, only lagging after rheumatoid arthritis. Even less-understood is the complication of small-fiber neuropathy (SFN). Approximately 30% of Sjogren’s patients suffer with it. Patients report that even their neurologists aren’t up on the fact that SFN can cause pain and spasms as this is relatively new information that they didn’t get in medical school. Have a detailed conversation with your general physician about the many aspects of Sjogren’s syndrome and make sure that the two of you are a good fit. Small-fiber neuropathy is painful and can be debillitating; it can impede all physical function because of the wide-spread muscle and connective tissue pain it can cause. SFN is a factor in the disruption in autonomic dysfunction that can lead to serious complications. It’s worth knowing that up to 1/3 of us have SS-A and SS-B negative blood tests. Remember, absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. You are welcome to tell us about your journey to diagnosis or your dissatisfaction with not getting a prompt one. Was it hard for you to get a diagnosis? Please tell us your experience! a) Hi rosy, I’m really struggling and I look up to you so I wonder if you can give me some advice. I struggle greatly to make decisions. Even the simplest one will have me just frozen for some time. So now, as I try to decide between 2 careers, I am really struggling. I can see myself doing both. One I like more but it makes a lot less money than the other. I have been paralyzed with fear and indecision and inability to commit and move forward. I’m stuck, wasting time (it’s been months and I
B) and I haven’t learned any new info bc I know almost everything i can at this point. My poor parents are so stressed out. Even knowing that I’m hurting them and myself by wasting time, I am so scared I cannot choose one and move forward. Fears about not enough money with option1 and fear that I won’t be as stimulated/interested with the other. Option1 is public interest lawyer and 2 is primary care doctor. Whats also hard is my family wants 2. I care about serving communities in need.
C) I guess what’s also hard is that ppl in my culture tend to become doctors. There is not much representation in the other field I’m considering. I also have GAD, which is why I’m so scared to choose. Taking risks and going against the grain/what ppl want is a big struggle. I’m clearly not a brave person. But I really look up to you and any advice you have would be greatly appreciated.
Taking your time to make big decisions doesn’t hurt anybody. Impatience is not harm. And if you’re NOW deciding between lawyer and doctor, it sounds like you’re at the beginning of your journey, because those are highly specialized careers and not on the same path.
When you are overwhelmed with a decision, it’s a good idea to take a step back and take the fear out of it. Make a list of pros and cons for each choice. You can include your fear and feelings about the choices on the list, but accept that those are part of the process and not wrong. You don’t need to be afraid of MAKING the choice. Take the feelings into consideration. HAVING feelings shouldn’t cause the anxiety.
I will admit, however, that you should probably consider your GAD when making your choice. Because you want to have a career that your personality, talents, strengths and weaknesses fit. A medical doctor and public interest lawyer both seem to be high stress fields with people’s lives in your hands. You have to consider YOURSELF and your needs when choosing a career if you want to be happy and successful. At least, that’s what I’ve found.
Also. You have limited your choices in two broad fields whose commonality is helping people, but in very different ways. But when you pursue those careers, you are not actually choosing your specialty right at the beginning. It sounds to me that your main goal is to help people, while your parents want the status and money of the one choice. I never really considered there being much difference in wealth between doctor and lawyer. Both fields make more or less money depending upon clients/specialty/field. And both have status. Also, if you want to help people, there are LOTS of ways doctors can choose working with the poor or underserved communities.
You’re also trying to decide on a career based on the end point. What it will be like to have arrived in that career, not on what it is like TO BE in that career. Which do you like better? Science or Law? They are pretty different. How do you feel around sick people or people in pain? Do you like to argue and debate? I’ve heard a lot of lawyers complain about being lawyers because it is apparently often very monotonous and dry. If your parents want you to be a doctor but you have no calling to be a doctor, I’m not sure how good a doctor you would be. I could never. I mean, you could get a PhD in whatever field you want which might be more to your tastes, but I’m not sure that’s what your parents want.
I would say picking between doctor or lawyer definitely sets you on a particular path that makes it harder and harder to go the other direction the farther you get on it, but that’s because they both take a great deal of education and training. But within each career, there are a broad variety of paths to take that could satisfy you more than you think. And some that won’t fit your individual needs. Maybe you’d be better as a research doctor. Or maybe the key for you really is to help people who need help, and instead of a public interest lawyer, you become a doctor in a free clinic in a poor area without good medical care. Or maybe as a lawyer, your desire to serve the public leads to a career making big changes, why it could even lead to politics. You could be president!
Okay, i mean that’s unlikely, but it’s more likely if you choose public interest lawyer. I know a lawyer who moved to New Orleans and has been working to free convicts on death row. He’s got a house and a family and makes a decent living although I’m sure he’s not rich.
I think you’re stressing yourself out thinking that if you make this one choice, you will never again have choices in your life. But that’s not true. Even if you can’t back up and choose doctor over lawyer (or vice versa) you still have multiple choices even within those fields. And you are also not doomed to forever abide by your current choices. There are plenty of doctors and lawyers who switched careers and used their knowledge in different ways that are more satisfying to them.
Life is a journey. And there are more than two stops on the journey. You have millions of ways to adjust any choices that you make now. You’re still figuring it out and that’s okay. So don’t stress out so much. This is a big choice, but it is not the end of your choices, And if you start out in premed and don’t like it, you can switch to pre law. Or do law with a minor in biology. Or premed with a minor in poli sci. Here’s a secret. There are actually jobs that use both law and medicine and knowing both actually makes you more marketable for future jobs. Me? I don’t know what they are. But if you start your studies, you will have the opportunity to discover them. Also, if you do a major in one and a minor in the other, if you DO decide to switch, you’ll still have some credits. You won’t be starting from zero.
Relax. Your choice is not as desperate as you think it is. Life is long. Law and Medicine are both vast fields. You have options. Your parent should probably chilll a bit.

The Best Way to Select the Most Effective Medical Spa For You
With numerous medical choices on the market, it might feel overwhelming once you select your Medical Spa or even Botox physician .
Security
First of all, security should be your number one driving force and outcomes ought to be a close moment. It's always great to check testimonials to give you a sense the way the company treats their clientele and you'll probably find some advice on their results. Yet, reviews can't provide you a great deal of information regarding security. It's very important that you find a doctor during or prior to your therapy. Medical health care treatments are medical processes and ought to be directly supervised by a doctor. At the State of Texas, it's the law a medical spa has to be possessed by a health care provider. This isn't well enforced and several break the legislation without much result. It's almost always a fantastic idea to keep your self protected in a physician's office.
Now let us discuss the largest reason you have to be at a physician's care. Your risk of big complication will probably be reduced. Additionally, in case of a drawback, a physician is easily offered. I am able to guarantee that an aesthetician won't probably understand how to take care of an embolized (obstructed ) artery in a timely manner. The diagnosis needs to be made fast and the remedy has to be left in moments. With no doctor's input, this could be a stretch. It's always good once the doctor is easily offered. Frequently policies and processes are set up at a physician's office which will safeguard you in case of a terrible outcome.
I'm really alert to the symptoms and signs of coronary occlusion, one of other investigations which will need to be produced fast. I believe it's fantastic if you may have a doctor do your own injections. Many physicians do great shots also, but just be sure the physician is near by.
Consultations
After picking out the dangerous possibilities, now is the time to pick the health spa that's the very best match for your requirements. Proceed to many consultations until you select unless you're wowed at the start. Everybody has a different notion about what aesthetic is appropriate and beautiful. Some like many Botox and dermal fillersothers enjoy a more natural appearance. Even though there's not any incorrect way, I'm really partial to natural appearing results. I'd rather your buddies not understand what you'd done. You look good... Have you been really resting more?" You ought to look a much better version of a younger version of the. That is my own opinion.
I won't ever judge somebody who would like to alter their face radically, BUT I will probably refer you to a different office which is thicker handed. I believe it's extremely important to net with your health care provider and have similar flavor on your own aesthetic. Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder and also our connection (or your prospective connection with your physician ) is really much simpler when we agree upon the desirable result. In case the staff appears overfilled or odd, you may want to reconsider.
The next point to test is that the technologies available for the remedies. Are the capsules the latest and cutting edge available on the marketplace. You may pay a bit more to get a greater performance laser, however you'll receive more bang for the dollar. I now possess the Cynosure Vectus for baldness and I have not enjoyed spending the excess cash on such baby after. The remedies are quicker, less painful, and also much more effective. This usually means you'll go back to my office to get more remedies. I take virtually every filler. If a physician actually invests in her organization, she'll invest in your skin and beauty. Additionally, not every single individual is most suitable for a single laser. It's excellent to have several alternatives to make a extremely customized skincare program.
Another Remarkable investment that I made in my clinic was
What exactly does this mean to youpersonally? Faster remedies, couples remedies, and much more scheduling choices. We can handle three regions simultaneously! This makes you outside the door back to life 3 times quicker. When deciding upon a Coolsculpting supplier, be certain the individual performing the treatment has attended to a Coolsculpting University and assess those testimonials!
Reviews
Although before I stated that testimonials can't provide you a great deal of information regarding security, I feel they're a fantastic sign of customers' adventures about a specific Med Spa Santa Barbara. It is unrealistic to expect a Spa to have a terrible critique, but the vast majority of reviews on Yelp, Facebook and Google ought to be quite positive. In spite of poor reviews, it is very good to see whether and how the Med Spa replied.

Note
I appreciate the tips and info! I will definitely look into this possibility, if I can get my doctors to believe it even exists. Looking at the elimination diet, though, I don’t think that’s an option for me. Partly because I’m autistic and have severe sensory processing disorder and the foods I love (including my big salads) are psychologically necessary and a key source of happiness in my life. Partly because I’m allergic to bananas, lactose intolerant, get terrible gas from beans and lentils so I have to limit how much I eat, live in a place where a large variety of foods is not available year-round (peeled pears? where am I going to find a single pear that’s remotely ripe and doesn’t cost an arm and a leg?) and don’t eat much meat (mostly because it’s too expensive and I’m very poor)... So I’d be reduced to, like, oatmeal and water.
I also don’t have bad reactions to the overwhelming majority of things on the “high” list on that site, only a few of them (in fact ibuprofen is apparently high in them and that’s the only medication that consistently *helps* with a lot of my symptoms), and many of the things that give me trouble are on the “low” or “negligible” parts of the lists, so maybe this isn’t the explanation for me after all. But there’s clearly something along these lines that’s messing me up because it’s not normal to be suffering the way I do all day every day!
I’m currently making a big list of every health issue, food issue, and medication issue I have. I’ve never just presented it all to a doctor at once because when I try to suggest multiple issues at once they immediately start treating me like a hypochondriac and refuse to look into anything, but maybe I’ll see if there’s a good way to present this stuff to a GP, maybe even bring a friend with me to an appointment so there’s someone to back me up... I’m just so very tired of feeling like crap all the time! But if the only solution is to stop eating salads, well... I guess I’d rather just suffer... 😬
Hello! :3 No worries if you can't/don't have the spoons/don't want to answer! But I figured I'd ask! Do you have any idea what's up with "have allergic reactions to certain things, except all of the blood work came back full-on negative to everything"? It's so baffling, and neither me nor the allergist have any idea why I have reactions if I'm not allergic, unless somehow the blood work was all wrong.
So, blood testing is not always as accurate as a skin scratch test, although it is safer as it avoids potentially triggering a bad allergic reaction. If you don’t experience a terrible reaction, you might want to ask for a skin scratch test.
I test negative on a lot of blood work when it comes to allergies, but the allergies show up on a skin scratch test with alarming alacrity.
But then I also react because the mast cells in my skin are hyperactive, which is also another reason for why allergens might not show up on a blood test. (If you suffer from dermatographia, that is an indication of mast cell hyperactivity in the skin.)
When they test for allergies they are testing for IgE-mediated allergic reactions. With any sort of mast cell instability, people with the condition often test negative for IgE reactions because that’s not the mechanism that causes the mast cells to destabilize. (There’s several other chemicals/hormones other than histamine in the body that can cause mast cells to destabilize, so I can’t really narrow down what causes the mast cell degranulation process because we don’t always know.)
Before the panic sets in, It’s possible to have mast cell instability without having full blown MCAS/D. It’s now thought that mast cell instability is the possible cause for IBS, which many people suffer from without developing anaphylactic reactions.
You don’t mention what the allergies are or what they affect, but using mast cell stabilizers might be of benefit to you, and it can look as simple as taking an h1 histamine blocker, such as Zyrtec with an h2 blocker like Pepcid once a day. If you are in the US, both are available otc, but you should of course discuss this with your doctor first before making any medication changes.
You may also want to look into oral allergy syndrome if your symptoms are only when you eat certain foods. With the crazy high pollen counts atm, many people are experiencing oral allergy syndrome for the first time. It’s basically a cross reaction to pollen and the body mistaking the food for that pollen. It’s why sometimes people with latex allergies react to eating bananas without having a true banana allergy—they’re in the same family and the body can’t always distinguish between that and ingesting the actual allergy.
Anyway, I hope that helps and you can get to the bottom of what is happening. Best of luck.
