Chapter 2.5 - Happenstance

“My kingdom for a way less boring secret cult,” Alice mutters.

“What?” Miko frowns but keeps her voice low enough not to echo.

The Secret Society members haven’t done much of anything besides huddle in small groups and talk. Alice and Miko have been sitting on pins and needles for over an hour.

“I know you think I’m crazy and don’t have a plan,” Alice starts.

“I hate to break it to you,” Miko replies, “But you don’t. You think if you get straight As and a distinguished mark on your final project, it will be enough to get you over the hump. But the review panel awards that to projects that offer ‘groundbreaking editorial commentary through art.’”

“I know! You don’t think I know that?”

“No, I don’t think you do,” she hisses. “I love you, Alice, you’re my best friend. But you have no idea how any of this will turn out. You are betting your entire degree on an exhibition about a bunch of undergrads in costume. Students who pull off distinguished marks work on their projects for years, not months.”

“I know!”

“Then why are you doing this?” she prods. “You could delay graduation; take the time you need to actually get your GPA up.”

Just the thought of hanging around an extra semester sends Alice’s pulse racing. She bites down on her lip so hard she tastes blood. “I can’t.”

“Oh, Alice...”

“If I don’t do it, then Jeffery’s right: I am stupid, and I was lucky that he was willing to take care of me because I obviously can’t do it myself.” The words shame her so much she wants to curl up in a ball. Alice shakes her head to clear it. “I don’t mean that. I’m just…I don’t mean that.”

Miko climbs to her feet and scowls as she offers a hand. “That man hit you.”

“I know what he did. I was there. And I don’t want to go back.” She takes the hand, letting Miko pull her to her feet.

“Good. And your weirdos are starting to do something more than talk, so let’s get this party started.”

Alice strips off her sweatshirt and stuffs it into her backpack so she can move freely. Then, out comes her camera.

Click. She snaps pictures as the sims in robes begin to twirl, their bodies curving and sensuous, almost—

—ecstatic.

Click. A low hum builds as the robed figures speed up, their bodies bending and snapping in unnatural ways.

Was it some kind of yoga? Alice started taking classes during rehab in hopes it would help her calm down, but she never learned any shit like this. She pauses to check the battery on her camera.

“We have to go,” Miko croaks.

“What do you mean?” Alice looks up, but what she sees doesn’t make any sense. Those sims can’t be floating. And where is that light coming from? Was it always there?

“Alice! Seriously! We gotta move!” Miko tugs at her arm, jolting her back to reality.

Right, the correct thing to do when the weird cult you’re stalking starts chasing you is run.

#IM SORRY. ITS JUST. IM SO. HHHHHRGN #its fine. its good. its entertaining to say the least #but from a writing perspective......#im not an anti i am the worlds biggest helluva boss enjoyer the hellaverse is SO SPECIAL TO ME #but.. the more i see about hazbin s1......#how in over four years was this what you came up with. how is the pacing this insane. how is this character treatment ok.... PLEASE #my sorta toxic trait is that as someone obsessed with media analysis; narrative devices; and story structure -#as well as just. someone who is an aspiring showrunner/creator working on my own huge projects -#is that every time i come across a movie or show that i think is done in a really lacking way. all i can think about is how i would #have done it instead #(this happens in a non-critical way too tbf if i really enjoy a book or game i'll be like they should let me make a based on film)#but hazbin. hazbin. all i have right now is 'i could fix her' in my head #I WOULD TREAT THESE CHARACTERS RIGHT I WOULD GIVE THEM THE NARRATIVE THEY DESERVE #there is. so much potential here. how is the execution so lacking #mine #good ideas!!!! good moments!!!!!!!! well basically like raise your hand if you’ve ever been blocked by a close mutual you though you were actually friends with and not just fandom-mates because you expressed an emotion they didn’t like because apparently they only want to interact with people who watch the same media as them and when you didn’t anymore they stopped talking to you and the media you DID have in common they gave up on once they found something more popular and seeing as that thing happened to be your favorite thing you graciously let them have because you believed you were friends and they would treat it with care and love but they didn’t and it made you feel like they didn’t respect you or like you or think of you as a person but rather as a faceless entity who sometimes could make Posts about tv shows you have in common. despite the fact they know what your face looks like because they’ve seen it because you’ve gotten together on zoom and watched movies together like friends do but that doesn’t mean anything i guess if you try to delicately have a conversation about how you feel because they just immediately dismiss you and start talking to you like you’re coworkers in a polite email chain because you said you didn’t like their tv show. which was a fact they already knew but didn’t take seriously because they were apparently never viewing you as a person! or has that only happened to me.

Aziraphale and Crowley were wrong in their choices.

Aziraphale thinks he needs to choose Heaven so he can “make things right.” just like when he talked to Metatron in season 1 instead of running away with Crowley.

Crowley thinks they should ignore all the problems and run away together just like he did in season 1.

these decisions are both wrong. but they’re both too stubborn to think any other way. at least for now.

#i finished binging the she-ra show #and it was fine? this is what people are so angry about?#i think catra's redemption was well setup and made sense #and while i still like the catra adora romance i wish there was like... more of it #here are some gripes i have tho #1) glimmer's decision at the end of s4 feels like it has no consequences #like for starters i'm annoyed that the issue ended being incredibly black or white and it zapped out the nuance of the respective decisions #but she's like alright i was completely wrong and after bow forgives her it's like... ok surely more people would have Opinions about this?#but no they don't. missed opportunity #but the problem in shows like these (idk if it's different outside western animation) is that there's no budget to deal with--#--cities and kingdoms having people. which makes them feel like shells that have little substance beyond being a narrative device #and yes everything in a show/piece of media IS a narrative device but you know. you gotta hide that. that's the beauty of media #but like... there's a universe where glimmer's subjects saw the consequences of her actions and rose against her. that woulda been fun!#2) adora's conflict in the finale of ohhh i have to Fulfill my Destiny(TM) comes so out of nowhere. esp when she had been against the--#--whole destiny angle for the previous four seasons. suddenly she's burdened with it and it's clear that it's a way to isolate adora #but it's SO sloppily done and there's no buildup to it #and 3) woulda like if they did more with the first ones. there's a lot of potential there and maybe a more natural way of isolate adora #like have her have this crisis of 'there's no one here who can fully understand me' and i thought that was what they'd do with the--#--cat creature they introduce in S5? but just ends up being catra's magic animal sidekick #idk there was a lot there to investigate. bow's dad could've been a good resource to make that happen too #uhhh that's it mostly?#at the end of the day this kind of western animated shows feel so pandering to kids. very formulaic and simple #tho i do respect that the show followed through the worst outcome in almost every occasion #(that's why catra compells me.... talk about a character who makes the worst decision at every point. she's just like me fr fr)#but yeah it was cute #i also like how bisexual the show felt at all times (except the ending where they were like ok monogamy is the goal but eh)#cute show. fun characters. easy 7/10 #catradora good #not great but eh #no show can give me compelling couples to obsess over (except for skam españa i guess)

I may have gone all out and done exactly that :)
