hi!! you're right, I am under the alterhuman/nonhuman umbrella!! specifically I'm not really any animal, I am a psychological therian which means my nonhumanity is linked to the way that my brain works. I am some kind of creature, if you search "alien" on my art blog (@beastwhimsy) you'll find what I am!! being this thing makes me very happy, and it is not detrimental to my mental health in any way. <- I've talked to my therapist about this and he's fascinated by it and supports the fact that I'm nonhuman!!

ever since I was a little kid I've been acting differently to the other kids because it made me happier- I would walk along fences like a cat, I'd consistently and constantly imagine myself with wings every day, and the alien species I invented back then to encapsulate my experiences actually stayed with me until the present day!! I have a theory that my nonhuman experiences link to my neurodivergent experiences, as I was outcast from social groups because I acted strangely, and I didn't feel like I was the same as my peers. today, my default sense of self is as some kind of creature, my spacial awareness matches the limbs and features of this creature more than it does my actual human form, and it makes me happier to visualise myself as this creature!! there are many, many ways to be alterhuman- for some its spiritual, others it is psychological, for some it is a coping mechanism for something and some do it for fun or because they feel happier as an alterhuman.

some common experiences for therians/nonhumans include phantom limbs (the experience of having spacial awareness of limbs and features corresponding to an animal/creature) and mental shifts (feeling as though your mindset has shifted away from human thought and feeling processes to become more animalistic, e.g. for a dog therian they would become much more focussed on smells as a way to experience the world around them, and they may think less in words and more in images and feelings. these states are usually temporary and not harmful or hindering, though they can be annoying).

you have a higher chance of being nonhuman if you are neurodivergent or have experienced dehumanisation throughout your life, but anyone can fall under the alterhuman umbrella regardless of your childhood or your neurological makeup!!

last thing, it isn't always but it can be tied into your gender!! for example, I use it/that as well as he/him because it feels more in line with how I perceive myself and it makes me happy. it is a reclamation of dehumanising terms in a sense.

I have, depending on how you count flickers, 8 identitype. And a couple hearthomes tied to the ‘types.

1 kintype, 1 hearttype, 1 kardiatype, 1 collectively linked vaguetype, 1 para-linked hearttype, 1 vagueflicker, 2 archetrope (1 paratrope, basically paratype + archetrope).

Awakening When

The “when” of awakening is always a weird one. I had always on some level know myself to be nonhuman identifying. But I learn the word dragon before 10 years old, learned what sort of dragon I am roughly a near decade after, and then have more discovery for new forms as a shapeshifter. My “awakening” of the kintype self is gradual. For my other identities, they all happened during my years within the alterhuman community, so within the recent 5 or so years.

The Sources

For myself, I’m not found within known media, or myth or folklore.

My hearttype is from fiction, as well as me and my headmate’s collective vaguetype. My flicker and the paratrope as well.

My kardiatype, that’s a tough one. The perception of realness lies within individuals. And to me, that was very real, in a way. I guess spiritually metaphysical folklore would fit.

My linked hearttype is from myth, more commonly tied to symbolic heraldry.

My other archetrope is also arguable, potentially historical, but it is a role.

Enjoyment of Alterhumanity

I very much enjoyed all the experience and exploration I had with my various identitype. It made life interesting, and contemplating existence is but a natural course of being. To put simply, I enjoy being a alterhuman.

Origin Theory

I don’t usually bother with identifying what or how or where my identitype came from. Nearly, if not all, of them are tied to one another, which also influenced their origin in a way. What do you say about a paratype that seem solely psychological, when it was based off of a metaphysical ‘type? All of my identitype are spiritual, psychological, metaphysical, and whatever other origin theory people use, there’s probably some paralell for me to draw as well.

Belief and Faith

This is yet another tricky one. I think on some level I’m a bit agnostic, but also I do believe in a lot of stuff. I’m brought up with buddhism, and some other folklore and beliefs that may have influence from taoism and shintoism. I believe in alternative universe amd multiversal world, and I do believe in magic and ghosts. I do not know if my belief has any bearing on my identities.

Queering the Queerness

I’m nonbinary solarian maverique.

I’m demipan, unsure the romance or sexual composition. I have inclination towards enbian, and I guess I’m diamoric.

I say I’m ambiamorous.

I don’t know most of my identitype’s gender or attraction type, though it seem like my kardiatype is somewhat masculine-neutral in a nonhuman way. My fictohearttype, I align with the idea of them being genderfluid, even if canon says man. Besides my archetrope, which is also masc-aligned but human way, the rest are vague nonhuman, if there even is gender involve for them. I don’t really bother feeling out the attraction.

The Shifting

I experience many type of shifts, most often phantom shift. I’ve had mental—berserk shift, dream shift. Donno if I have had envisage or sensory shift, and I think I have had astral shift, but that is so confusing.

Alterhumanity Slice-Of-Life

On the daily, I am a near perma-shifted dragon. I don’t really know what it’s like to not live as I am, because I grew up with my draconity as a very constant thing, sometimes my family have inside joke about me being a dragon. Usually I’m even more creature-like when interacting with my partner, and occasionally have a hard time not growling or make creature noises outside. There is certain thrill with acceleration in a vehicle, especially with the windows down, or while being stealthy. Ocean draws me in, and despite occasional nightmare and potential added exhaustion, I always loved having lucid dreams. Not sure if that’s tied to my alterhumanity or not.

I donno, it’s hard to clearly see what is attributed from my alterhumanity, and what isn’t. Is my love of birds a paratype feeling? Is my penchant for stealth game due to my archetrope? I mean, my love for orange everything is definitely kinity related.

No idea. Many of my identitype operate outside this society or this reality. Even the human hearttype, I have no idea of their internal clock.

The Knowledge of Self, A Chronology

Since I can remember, I’ve always been a dragon. So roughly 3 decades.

For knowing about my kardiatype, I’d say roughly for 16 some years.

As for the rest, roughly within the 5-6 years.

Otherborn, a Discourse

Because of my kardiatype, I’m really uncertain if I may be born with my draconity and later realized, or not born with my draconity but had enlightened to the fact, aka awakened to my draconity. That’s a silly debate and only a source of insanity.

The rest of other identitype I’m not sure about. There has been seeds for some of them before I have the terms provided by the alterhuman community, but it’s hard to tell. I know I said the “awakening” to be recent, but I count the “naming the feelings” to be a sort of awakening. In actuality, regarding ninja, hearttype, which in turn is tied to the paratype feeling of kitsune, all these I’m uncertain if they had been there before I’m aware of them this life.

Dietary Preferences

I believe my love for seafood, especially raw fish/sashimi, is due to my kardiatype. My love for the Japanese cuisine could partly be attributed to the kardiatype, potentially my hearttype, and where my archetrope came from.

Friendship is Magic

I have alterhuman friends that later become irl friends. But majority of them are online. Tis the unfortunate thing.

Home is Where the Heart Belongs

As a dream dragon, my natural territory is the place between the awake and unconcious mind.

My kardiatype came from the ocean, and I felt drawn to the ocean because of that. So did possibly my hearttype. The two are also tied to the land of the rising sun.

Our vaguetype belongs to the star and cosmos.

My para-heartlink and paratrope feels more your typical “mystical creature in the woods” vibe, so perhaps that is their natural habitat.

When folks talk about “being a animal”, you have to assume they are talking about animality, because otherwise, human is also by definition, an animal.

But I’m a bit spiteful (or a lot) towards these sort of question that can be unintentionally exclusionary.

Simply, I am not, and a couple of my identitype are not, some are. My hearttype is. My kardiatype isn’t. My para-heartlink is, kind of. My paratrope isn’t, my archetrope is. Our vaguetype isn’t. Really not sure how to categorize my vague-flicker.

Tumblr showed me a post where somebeing on tiktok was saying alterhumanism was inherently ableist because they personally didn't realise they were plural due to signs of plurality being marked as alterhuman experience and we 'appropriate plural terms' (but then it refreshed and I lost it forever, so here's my own post).

And I'm sorry but I just find the idea of alterhumanism being inherently ableist (in particular because it somehow encroaches on plurality) really laughable.

The belief in beings born human in body/appearance but with nonhuman forms, souls or connections is told throughout myth.

Therianthropy, otherkinism and even 'linking and heartedness has been experienced, though not always named as such, for literal decades. Not to mention how diverse the origins and experiences are.

Alterhumanism and it's various terms (in the most part) certainly preceded plurality community terms reaching popular enough spheres to be appropriated.

It's even extremely common to see plurals with alterhuman identities co-existing with being plural.

I generally only see those who identify as plural and alterhuman use the term 'fictive'. The alterhuman specific term is fictomere. If beings incorrectly use it because of ignorance or hiding alterhumanism that's not the same as the whole community appropriating the term.

I've never seen 'switching ' be used at all for feeling ones identity more strongly if it's not always present, and 'shifting' comes from 'shapeshifting' which is not a plural term.

And it's been argued to death about how experiencing the sensation of a limb which isn't there is by definition a phantom limb sensation. There's nothing else to call it. It's not unique to one condition or experience.

I'm very sorry that this being was led on the wrong path of self discovery and I'm sorry to all whose lives were actually made worse by or had their self actualisation stunted by being somehow led to believe they were alterhuman when they weren't.

But the existence of those who were wrong doesn't mean we're all wrong or all actually systems or otherwise mentally ill and 'incorrectly coping' or whatever nonsense.

Saying this large community, filled with many identities and origins for those identities, is appropriating and ableist based on this argument makes as much sense as terfs accusing all trans men of being self-hating women who just need help with their internalised misogyny just because they (the terf) went on a gender journey which finished on square one.

Do not feel guilty for your identity. We've been here for decades. We have our own terms and labels. If others can't accept what they can't understand and have to moralise their hatred by finding something 'problematic' about us, that's on them. Love you all~

1. I'm honestly not sure, i relate to both.

2. i dabbled in the Therian community several years ago, but i quickly lost interest. i didn't relate to anyone and it felt like they were just playing at it. I've somewhat recently learned the term "kin for fun" and i suspect i stumbled into 1 of those areas of the internet by accident.

I've just been doing my own thing with it in the meantime. i was brought back to the general community by Tumblr, actually. i follow a blog that's unrelated to this and they reblogged the comic that's floating around about species dysphoria. it really struck something in me and i fell down a rabbit hole of nonhuman/alterhuman blogs. made me want to give it a try again.

3. uuuuuhhhhh... gear... i have a tail that a friend bought me. real fur fox tail. i probably should throw it out, tho. it's been in a mold-infested area for years now.

I'd honestly prefer to just make a yarn tail as close to my colors as possible. i found some yarn that's similar, but I'm chronically broke af and can't afford it. I'm not sure if it would even look how i want it to.

i did have a collar in highschool, but it was for cats, lol. it was pink with a little pink bell i took off. it looked horrendous because i attacked it with a sharpie, so it was all splotchy and bleh. I'm not a fan of pink or how narrow it was, but it's what i had. that was actually before i heard about Therians, much less alterhumans.

i have my eyes set on this suuuuuuper cheap black collar (like... $2) that I'll probably get at some point. add a dog tag to it that i can unclip and wear subtly when I'm out and about.

4. I've been like this for as long as i can remember. as far as the term, I've known about it for like... 2 months or so at this point? i identify more closely with nonhuman, tho. it just clicked with me when i first heard it. i consider "alterhuman" a more secondary term for myself.

5. i like watching and reading things with werewolves. the easiest way to get me to try something is to tell me there's werewolves, lmao. i really like jerky and things i can tear apart with my teeth.

I'm a quadrupedal werewolf, so i started doing quads when i was fairly young. i had no idea it was something already around, i just mimicked wolves. i had to stop for a while, tho, it was too stressful on my wrists. i picked it up again recently, just doing walks when i go to get something and such.

i tend to be fairly subtle with what i show to others, but i am absolutely living for some of the suggestions I've seen recently. I'd love to try some sometime

6. yes, holy shit. my teeth are such an important aspect to me and i had so many issues with brushing my teeth growing up (I've since figured out a work-around!) so i just... all the cavities. which means that every time they fix a tooth i have an entirely new distaste for how my mouth feels T^T they don't seem to care how it's shaped, just that there isn't a cavity anymore. my teeth are probably my largest source of (nonhuman) dysphoria.

lately, tho, I've been having some with my legs. they're far too long. I'm a quadruped, dag nabbit! how am i supposed to walk like this??? but it's not so bad unless I'm in a shift-y mood, since I'm also "human" shaped at times.

teeth are always, tho... always. it's so frustrating. those are my main 2, sometimes other things pop up and i view my trans-ness and alterhumanity as being fairly close/similar/linked, so they tend to blend together.

Gender variance and it's link with neurodivergency

Okay Tumblr, let's talk gender (I know, your favorite topic) my preface on why this topic matters to me is: I'm autistic ( diagnosed moderate to severe autism) I'm nonbinary trans ( in a way that most non-autistic people don't understand and actually look down on)  and I went to college for gender study ( Mostly for intersex studies but a lot of my research was around non-binary and trans identities) I will be using the term autism as pants when I have experience with however when ADHD is part of the study I will use ND which stands for neurodivergent and yes this is going to be about xenogenders and neopronouns.

autism can affect gender the same way autism can affect literally every part of an identity. a big thing about having autism is the fact that it completely can change how you view personhood and time and object permanence and gender and literally all types of socially constructed ideas. let me also say hear that just because Society creates and enforces an idea does it mean that it doesn't exist to all people it just me that there is no nature law saying that it's real and the “rules” for these ideas can change and delete and create as time and Society evolves and changes.  gender is one of those constructs.

Now I'll take it by you reading this you know what transgender people are  (if you don't understand what a trans person is send me an ask and I'll type you up a pretty little essay lmao,  or Google it but that's a scary thought sense literally any Source or website can come up on Google including biased websites so be careful I guess LOL) anyway to be super basic trans people are anyone who doesn't identify as the gender they were assigned at Birth (yes that includes non-binary people I could do a whole nother essay about that shit how y'all keep spreading trying to separate non-binary people from the trans umbrella)  some people don't like to use the label and that is totally fine by the way.

now autistic people to view the world in a way differently than allistic (neurotypical) ppl do.  we don't take everything people teach us at 100% fact and we tend to question everything and demand proof and evidence for things before we can set it as a fact in our brains. This leads to why a lot of autistic people are atheist (although a lot of religions and this is not bashing on religious people at all I am actually a Jewish convert)  this questioning leads to a lot of social constructs being ignored or not understood At All by a lot of autistic people and personally I think that's a good thing.  allistics take everything their parents and teachers and schools teach them as fact until someone else says something and then they pick which ones to believe. autistic people study and research and learn about a topic before forming an opinion and while this may lead to them studying and believing very biased material and spitting it out as fact it can also lead them to try and Discover it is real by themselves.

because of this autistic people are more question their gender or not fall in a binary way at all as the concept of gender makes no sense to a lot of us. “ if gender is a construct then autistic people who are less aware of social norms are less likely to develop a typical gender identity”

no really look: “ children and teens with autism spectrum disorder ASD or Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder ADHD  are much more likely to express a wish to be the opposite sex compared with their typical developing peers” That was posted in 2014. we have been saying this stuff forever but no one wants to listen. the thing is gender variance (being not cisgender or at least questioning it)  has always been closely hand-in-hand with autistic and ADHD people I'm even the doctor who did that study understood right away that it all made sense the whole time: “ Dr. Strang said they were initially surprised to find an overrepresentation of gender variance among children with ADHD. However, they later realized that prior studies have shown increased levels of disruptive behavior and other behavioral problems among young people with gender variance”  SEE YOURE NOT WEIRD YOURE JUST YOU AND YOURE NOT ALONE IN THIS!!

5% autistic people who did the study were trans or questioning. it was also equal between the Sexes fun fact. that may not seem like a lot till you realize that the national average is only .7% that's literally over 700% higher than the national average. That's so many! and that's just in America.

 in Holland there was a study in 2010 “ nearly 8% of the more than 200 Children and adolescents referred to a clinic for gender dysphoria also came up positive on a assessment for ASD” they weren't even testing for ADHD so the numbers could be even higher!

now I want to talk about a  certain section of the trans umbrella that a lot of autistic people fall under called the non-binary umbrella. non-binary means anything that isn't just male or just female. it is not one third gender and non-binary doesn't mean that you don't have a gender. just clearing that up since cis people keep spreading that. non-binary is an umbrella term for any of the infinite genders you could use or create. now this is where I'm going to lose a bunch of you and that's okay because you don't have to understand our brains or emotions To respect us as real people. not many allistics can understand how we see and think and relate to things and that's okay you don't have to understand everything but just reading about this could be so much closer to respecting us for Who We Are from you've ever been and that's better than being against us just for existing.

now you might have heard of my Mutual Lars who was harassed  by transmeds for using the term Autigender (I was going to link them but if it gets traction I don't want them to get any hate)  since a lot of people roll their eyes at that  and treated them disgustingly for using a term that 100% applied correctly.  Autigender  is described as " a neurogender which can only be understood in the context of being autistic or when one's autism greatly affects one's gender or how one experiences gender. Autigender is not autism as a gender, but rather is a gender that is so heavily influenced by autism that one's autism and one's experience of gender cannot be unlinked.” Now tell me that doesn't sound a lot like this entire essay I've been working on with full sources…..

xenogenders and neopronouns are a big argument point on whether or not people “believe” in non binary genders but a big part of those genders is that they originated from ND communities and are ways that we can try to describe what gender means us in a way that cis or even allistic trans people just can't comprehend or ever understand. Same with MOGAI genders or sexualities. A lot of these are created as a way to somehow describe an indescribable relationship with gender that is so personal you really cant explain it to anyone who isnt literally the same as you.

Even in studies done with trans autistic people a large amount of them dont even fall on a yes or no of having a gender at all and fall in some weird inbetween where you KINDA have a gender but its not a gender in the sense that others say it is but its also too much of a gender so say youre agender. And this is the kind of stuff that confuses allistic trans people and makes them think nonbinary genders are making stuff up for attention, which isnt true at all we just cant explain what it feels like to BE a trans autistic person to anyone who doesnt ALREADY know how it feels.

In this study out of the ppl questioned almost HALF of the autistic trans individuals had a “Sense of identity revolving around interests” meaning their gender and identity was more based off what they liked rather than boy or girl. That makes ppl with stuff like vampgender or pupgender make a lot more sense now doesnt it? We see that even in the study: “My sense of identity is fluid, just as my sense of gender is fluid […] The only constant identity that runs through my life as a thread is ‘dancer.’ This is more important to me than gender, name or any other identifying features… even more important than mother. I wouldn't admit that in the NT world as when I have, I have been corrected (after all Mother is supposed to be my primary identification, right?!) but I feel that I can admit that here. (Taylor)” and an agreement from another saying “Mine is Artist. Thank you, Taylor. (Jessie)” now dont you think if they grew up with terms like artistgender or dancergender they would just YOINK those up right away????

In fact “An absence of a sense of gender or being unsure of how their gender should “feel” was another common report” because as ive said before in this post AUTISTIC PEOPLE DONT SEE GENDER THE WAY ALLISTIC PEOPLE SEE IT. therefore we wont use the same terms or have the same identities nor could we explain it to anyone who doesnt already understand or question the same way! Participants even offered up quotes such as “As a child and even now, I don't ‘feel’ like a gender, I feel like myself and for the most part I am constantly trying to figure out what that means for me (Betty)” and also “I don't feel like a particular gender I'm not even sure what a gender should feel like (Helen)”

Now i know this isnt going to change everyones minds on this stuff but i can only hope that it at least helped people feel like theyre not broken and not alone in their feelings about this. You dont have to follow allistic rules. You dont have to stop searching inside for who you really wanna be. And you dont have to pick or choose terms forever because just as you grow and evolve so may your terms. Its okay to not know what or who you are and its okay to identify as nonhuman things or as your interests because what you love and what you do is a big part of who you are and shapes you everyday. Its not a bad thing! Just please everyone, treat ppl with respect and if you dont understand something that doesnt make it bad or wrong it just means its not for you. And thats okay.
