as much as it pains me to change my blog theme, the season of BBC Merlin approaches and I am but a prisoner to my autism. I'll probably change it back to l&co when the season of the gay magic is done but I must follow the brain worms

My November writing goal is to finish part 2 of Arson and Other Fires. (In other news because I just realized I forgot to say this here: I finished part 1 of AaoF. It's around 30k). Unfortunately I also... don't have that good of an idea of how long part 2 will be? So that's a fun extra challenge

week one of novel writing wrapup ദ്ദി ˉ͈̀꒳ˉ͈́ )✧
sigh …… my detailed outline’s firm decree that the sweetwater portion of the story should be finished before 15k……. the problem is actually that i’m having way too much fun; it should be disheartening that the previous 2 flop drafts had both at Least managed to get the party on the road by this point (though in the very first one they were still at liena’s palace!), but the reason we’re still there now is just because I keep getting struck by new events that I need to have happen there lol. i think it’ll be relatively easy to trim after the fact (and the current misadventure with the castle lord might need to be removed entirely or just relocated to the shrine, we will see how I feel tomorrow) anyways, i just need to get all of my thoughts out for this section of the plot and i have so many of them suddenly lol
anyways we should be on the road to the way-station by the end of tomorrow, which is the portion of story I’ve least been looking forward to (also the worst part of my outline because I still can’t decide when I want the hierai body retrieval situation to be resolved …), basically the goal is to move through it as quickly as possible and not linger on anything except the inn bedroom scene. we’ve spent long enough in sweetwater already setting up what io and hi are trying to achieve & I really really want to get to the landship / the part where rhea arc actually starts moving … as always the only solution is to write More And Faster

Day 10: Reached 23,380 words! Writing was like pulling teeth today, but I managed words on the page, so good enough. I'll regret staying up so late tomorrow, but that's tomorrow :)

NaNoWriMo 2022: Day 18
My concentration has been crap today- I’m on my period, I’m still getting over a cold and my bipolar is being a little bit of a bitch (so mild hypomania I think).
I started doing some of my school work (finally!) and I got a little bit of writing done today. I’m posting early so I can go to bed early tonight. Sleep is supposed to help in most cases. UGH.
Also told one of my irl friends that I’m a lesbian and I don’t know how she took it so there’s that too. Who’s nervous??? (me because I think I should have waited to tell her :/)
November 18 word count: 2,365 words
NaNoWriMo 2022 Total To Date: 58,773 words
Excerpt:
We turned back to Miss Sarah Holburn who was trying her best not to cry; she had been our governess since we were six and eight years old; that was seven years now. She tried to stand up to Mama’s stubbornness and she lost out. But she already knew that she wouldn’t be paying for the price of a neglected education; Rosie and I would. We’d be ignorant, rude, unrefined, prideful, vain and all the worst qualities imaginable. We would, in short, become our worst selves. It hurt Miss Holburn that Mama was choosing this path for us. She thought it would be better if we were pretty little fools or in my case, just a plain fool.
“I have watched you both grow up and I’m proud of you girls. I know you both have your faults, but you’re both very spirited girls. Don’t ever give that up; certainly not for anyone else. Women need to be strong to survive in this world. You need to have some fight in you. And you can be both feminine and strong willed. Strength is a trait that even the most ladylike can properly possess.” She looked to Rosie as she said this. But then she looked to me with the same smile- “There isn’t one right way to be a woman either. You can be a masculine woman and that can become you more than trying to force yourself to be something you’re not. It may not be typical but it’s not wrong, just different. And different can be a powerful, beautiful thing.”
Rosie stood up straighter to hear these words; I felt compelled to too. Rosie was not usually a crier but she started up again. She ran forward and threw her arms around Miss Holburn. My vision grew blurry looking at them; oh, I suppose that Rosie’s tears and Miss Holburn’s words inspired this in me. No other woman ever told me that I was fine like this. They usually didn’t know what to do with me and that was on the nicer end of the reactions I’ve received.
Someone once told Mama that she ought not bring me to parties with her because I’d give other girls bad ideas but she slapped that woman across the face and screamed at her. Papa and I had to pull her off the other woman. It didn’t help that she had too much to drink that night. She kept tearfully apologizing to me in the carriage ride home. She kept bumping into Papa’s arm as the road was uneven. He looked out the window and seemed quietly amused by the stars passing us by. Rosie was sleeping curled up to my side, snoring a little lightly.
She danced herself dizzy because she was one of the prettiest girls there easily. We hadn’t debuted yet but the soldiers did not care. Rosie danced with everyone who asked. And a girl who thought I was a boy asked me to go around the floor with her. I didn’t deny her request, hoping that maybe she wouldn’t realize I was also a girl. I was afraid of how she’d react if she knew. We went around a few numbers; it was so much fun, I forgot to stop. She kept going with me.
“You’re the best looking boy here.” She said and kissed my cheek when no one was looking. “Thanks for all those turns. I was trying to avoid someone else. Don’t worry, honey, I don’t like him at all.” She pressed her calling card into my hand.
“Maybe if you come to the next dance, you’ll save a turn for me?” She smiled and I felt a flutter of butterflies wings in my chest. Before I could promise the lovely lady anything, my sister came out of nowhere and seemed intent on coming up to me.
“Matilda! There you are.” Rosie bowled into me without realizing what she had done.
I looked to the beautiful girl who danced with me, in frantic agony; so much hope flew up through me. She only sweetly smiled and winked. She knew? And she still danced with me, flirted with and kissed me? I was stunned momentarily and didn’t hear Rosie talking at me; instead I watched that girl walking away into the crowd. She knew I was another girl; she purposely approached me and asked me to dance. Perhaps, I didn’t have to be a spinster after all. I didn’t yet know how I’d use what I learned; there are other women who like women. I’m not the only girl in the world like this.

OKAY BUT DO I KILL ONE OF THEM OFF OR DO ALL THE GOOD CHAR -
I could kill off secondary characters. My core four might not need to die. This could work.

I know most people on here don't like to go to the gym because you're all gay nerds. I like to go to the gym. For the purpose of understanding this post please try to imagine that you, too, enjoy going to the gym so that you can empathize with my point here.
Anyway, so imagine you are going to the gym. You're pumped about the concept of getting some muscle on you. Plus, the gym has this "lift weights every day!" challenge with a feasible plan to slowly and safely increase the amount of weight you can lift by the end of the month. Cool!
So anyway you go there, and you're having a good time. But then you notice something. Some people are coming in with these guys in shirts that say LIFT FOR HIRE. You're curious, and you notice over time that some people are actually paying these guys to come in and do the lifting challenge for them.
"Huh," you say to your mega hot, muscled gym buddy. "That's so weird. What's in it for the people paying these guys?"
"Dunno," says your friend, mid bicep curl.
"Um, actually!" says the gym owner. "Some people are disabled, so the only way they can lift weights it to pay LIFT FOR HIRE, inc."
"But wait," you say. "They still aren't lifting the weights though? Paying someone else to lift for you doesn't mean you've lifted the weights."
The gym owner gasps. "How could you SAY that?"
"Because... it's true?" you say. "Uh, if you pay guys to lift your weights, that's probably really good for the guys you are paying. But it's not going to develop your ability to lift at all. Your muscles aren't going to grow, you're just going to lose money and get no results."
"That's ABLEIST," they say. "How DARE you! Some people are LITERALLY paralyzed, did you think of that?"
"Well, yeah, some people are, and that means definitionally they can't lift weights," you explain. "And paying someone else doesn't change that. Maybe if they wanted to like, move something in their house it would make total sense to hire these guys! But if you hire them to do your workout you get nothing, because the purpose of a workout is personal development. I'm not morally condemning people who do it, but it seems like a waste of money when this event is, again, about improving one's personal abilities."
"This is absolutely DISGUSTING, CLASSIST rhetoric!" the gym owner roars, and then turns to one of the LIFT FOR HIRE guys, "Pay no attention this disgusting person, dear sponsor, we support your business and we totally want you to keep funding our gym!"
"Sponsor?" says your hot muscled friend who was way too busy actually doing their workout and getting gains to engage in dumb discourse. "Oh, now it makes sense."
"Shut up, you don't understand our love!" says the gym owner, before sloppily making out with a LIFT FOR HIRE guy in front of you.
Anyway, that's what learning about the whole AI nanowrimo controversy was like for me.

Day 23: 45,681. Broke 45,000! Under 5,000 words to go :) I'm slowing down this week - I'm telling myself it's to save some writing for the write-ins I hope to attend, but it's also nice to get to bed before 2am sometimes!

Hey so why the fuck is NaNoWriMo's AI policy page talking like the challenge is about writing a book that you then go on to publish and not a challenge where writers throw caution and their sanity to the wind in the interest of getting a first draft out within 30 days?? Do people usually edit their NaNoWriMo novels while writing them? Do they send them off to friends or paid editors while writing for feedback and grammar/spelling checks? Do they immediately take what they wrote and start pitching it to publishing houses as soon as the clock hits midnight on December 1st??
I've never completed NaNoWriMo but I was always under the assumption that this is a fun challenge mostly for amature/indie writers that's about just finishing a draft of your story at all, it's not about trying to get a book completely finished and published within 30 days?? I mean just WRITING a first draft in that time is impressive, but pulling off also getting it all the way to store shelves in a month?? That's not just absurd it's fucking impossible. No one is doing that.
Like under classism they are saying not everyone can afford an editor...but who the fuck is sending any part of their novel off to an editor or reviewers mid write?? And for ableism, arguing that not everyone can "see" the issues in their writing...it's not about that?? Like Shannon Hale said, your first draft is shoveling sand into a bucket so later you can build castles, if you're worried about fixing errors mid-write you're never going to finish anything. Plus NaNo has never had requirements that your story be polished or edited or whatever, it's just about word count. And focusing on the indie writer scene and publishers??? Again, that's not the goal of this challenge???? You're just supposed to finish your first draft, everything else comes after. Even writers who do plan on trying to get their novels published are probably not sending their FIRST DRAFT that they wrote while sleep deprived over the course of 30 days to editors and agents?? Arguing that some people need AI to make a publishable, edited, polished novel is missing that the point of NaNoWriMo was never about writing something perfect the first try, it's about shoveling sand into buckets so LATER you can build castles. Or idk just shoveling sand into a bucket for the fun of it.
Like am I insane?? None of these arguments hold up for loads of reasons but specifically because if you are doing NaNoWriMo you do not need an editor or reviewers because your first draft is just supposed to exist, adding on the burden of taking that novel from first draft to polished and publishable while also just trying to finish it at all in 30 days is a fever dream, not an achievable aspiration. You don't have time to do that AND write. Hell, most writers in general will tell you to never edit as you go!! Where is this assumption that anyone is doing this to make money coming from?????
(And like, if you do want to go on to look for feedback/editing and try to publish your story and you feel like you need AI for that, you're wrong, but you can do that AFTER the event, that isn't something you need to do while it's happening. While it's happening all you need to do is write. The few times I tried NaNoWriMo I didn't even fix spelling errors as I wrote, I just wrote because all that mattered was the word count. I could worry about the rest later.)
I mean, I know that apparently the team got gutted and replaced which is probably why this shift happened, it's well documented that AI fanatics cannot conceptualize someone making art simply for the joy of creating rather than producing something they can sell for money, they legit see the process as secondary to the goal of getting rich which makes them incompatible with almost all artistic communities, because artists do what they do for the love of the process, not just to have a sellable final piece, but like christ alive I have never seen such a disconnect between what the people running a community think everyone is there for and the wants and needs of the actual people in that community.
Writers don't want AI to write our stories!! Take it from someone who grew up dirt poor and is disabled in a way that makes writing extremely difficult(dyslexia, adhd, hEDS, chronic migraines, fibromyalgia, ect.) I do not want AI to write any story for me. I want to write it. Beating a dead horse here but you are not defending poor or disabled people, you're using us as a meat shield so you can pretend your plagiarism and pollution machine is totally the future~ and take it from me, we're FUCKING sick of it.
From what I remember NaNoWriMo was never about making money for the people who took part, it was about sharing the joy of writing with other writers while tackling a huge challenge. This shift is bullshit for a lot of reasons but it's absolutely bullshit for misunderstanding what the hell drew people to the challenge in the first place.
