Broke (2016): BBC Sherlock is a phenomenal piece of media and anything that seems like a flaw just hasn't been fully explored yet

Woke (2020): BBC Sherlock is an incredibly flawed series run by an egotistical writer, it never deserved the hype and is actively bad on so many fronts (especially representation)

Bespoke (2024): BBC Sherlock is flawed and bogged down by increasingly poor writing, which many fans refused to see while it was airing, leading to hugely misplaced expectations (particularly for the final series), AND it has the seeds of some compelling characterizations and portrayals, some genuinely solid performances, and touches--albeit imperfectly--on complexities that are still being discussed today (particularly as it relates to the relationship between Sherlock and John). The huge cultural impact of the show has created a massive pendulum effect in its public perception, leading to most people today remembering a caricature of the show (whether positive or negative) rather than appreciating its nuanced merits and failings...that being said Season 4 sucked

An End at the Hands of One's Own Creation

My art for a scene from "Monsters", a Sephiroth-centred character study/fanfic I wrote in 2023 (link!).

“Just a moment, dear boy,” Hojo drawled, coughing up blood as he spoke. “Surely, Sephiroth, you are not blind to this truth.”  

Sephiroth stepped so close that there was no more space between them. He looked down at the crumpled, old scientist, refusing to kneel to his level. The crackle of flames was the only sound to be heard, overwhelming heat contrasting so strikingly against Sephiroth’s cold, frigid gaze.  

“Were it not for P-Project Jenova– for Project S. For Lucrecia, Gast, Shinra and I... you would not exist. Were your foetus left untampered, what makes you you simply would not be. Your power, your strength, your intelligence, your appearance, even your name. Your extraordinary nature, all your greatness– it is because of me. The only way you can exist is as a scientific experiment. Never forget that, my boy.”  

Sephiroth did not move. He was still as a statue, remaining outwardly calm in the face of Hojo’s words. The moment seemed to last an eternity, the sound of crackling fire mixing with the scientist’s feeble, wheezing chuckles. The room felt colder than the most isolated regions of the northern continent. And the angel of destruction bore a frightening expression, one of darkness and impending doom.  

“Better a monster than to be one of you.”

So I watched A Silent Voice with some but minor knowledge of the story going in. And right at the beginning when Shoko's bullying started I had the nagging worry that while Ishida would be redeemed they'd leave Ueno and Kawai as one-dimensional bullies. Painting the girls as the "real villains" while the male protagonist got to have depth. Anyway I just finished the movie and I would like to formally apologize to Oima Yoshitoki and Yoshida Reiko I should never have doubted you.

Helena kissing and sleeping with Innie!Mark in 2x04 is in fact sexual assault and not sweet or romantic or whatever, by the way. Yes, Innie!Mark is in love with Helly, and I do ship them! But that is not Helly, that is Helena. She is sleeping with Innie!Mark under false pretenses. That's literally the definition of rape by deception (“the perpetrator deceives the victim into participating in a sexual act to which they would otherwise not have consented, had they not been deceived.” Mark would not have slept with Helena if he knew who she was).

Even if Mark does catch feelings for Helena later in s2, he did not feel that way about her in 2x04—he felt that way about Helly, and Helena knew that and took advantage of it.

And sure, yes, to a degree, Helly and Helena are the same person. But like...they're also not. They are, and they are not—that is the point the show repeatedly makes. Ex: Helly's rebellious nature is an inversion of Helena's entitlement, and a stronger manifestation of Helena's own rebellious nature (unconfirmed that she has one, but likely). But also, Helena lives for Lumon, while Helly wants to burn it to the ground. The same, but different. The same person, but also not. There is a reason reintegration is such a painful process mentally.

Different enough, certainly, that Innie!Mark sleeping with one is not the same as him sleeping with the other...especially when he doesn't even know that this is Helena and not Helly. If Mark decides that it is the same to him, then fine, but he hasn’t decided that. As things stand, he slept with Helena believing she was Helly, and that is not romantic.

Unsure if this is an unpopular opinion but I think Viktor’s writing in Arcane s2 is just all over the place
